HISTORIC NOTES Prehistoric settlements (Silacker and Kobaldbühel) confirm the presence of populations since the early Bronze Age (1500-1800 B.C.). Finds of Roman coins remind us that Romans stayed in our area. The origin of the name LANA is still unclear. In old documents we find a variety of names such as Leunon, Luonan and Lonan, Laevnan, Leunan. It was only in the eighteenth century that the name Lana came into use. In the early Middle Ages the township was under the rule of the Counts of Appiano who, after having been defeated by the Counts of Tyrol, had to yield their territory to Count Albert III of Tyrol. In 1850 the town, which up until that time had been divided into three independent communities, (Villa, Lana di Sopra and Lana) was united to form the large town of Lana. Foiana/Völlan was added in 1929. The reclamation of the marshy plains and the regulation of the course of the river Adige brought Lana a considerable increase in agriculture, affecting its entire economy. Today Lana is the main fruit-growing centre in South Tyrol. About 6000 wagon loads of apples are harvested each year (1 wagon = 10.000 kg). The following infrastructures created in the early years of this century made a decisive contribution to the town's economic development: 1903: 1906: 1950: 1912: 1913:

Building of the electric power station in the «Gorge» Building of the Lana-Merano road and lying of the Lana-Merano tram line The tram system was replaced by buses Inauguration of the Lana-Monte San Vigilio/Vigiljoch cableway which, with the Bolzano-Colle line, was one of the first in the world. Building of the Valsura bridge and inauguration of the LanaPostal/Burgstall tram line, connecting with the Bolzano-Merano railway line.
