Everybody has one or even more than one. A special place, where one can find tranquillity, like in a little chapel attached to an historical Aristocratic seat of which there are a number in Eppan. A magical viewpoint from where one can gaze at the entire Überetsch. Or else a special rocky outcrop from which one can jump into the cold Montiggler Lakes and thereby refresh one’s body and soul.

Our favourite place is as individual as we are ourselves. And Eppan on the Alto Adige wine route has many of these special locations and places of longing to offer. The list is headed by the bathing lakes situated in the wood, the Montiggler Lakes, followed by the widely popular Gleifchapel and the town hall square in St.Michael.

Whereas some prefer nature, not only to swim and relax, but also to go biking and hiking, others prefer a cultural pastime. And others again lean towards indulgence, especially towards wine and all its different facets. South Tyrol’s biggest wine growing area is the home of top wines and quite a few cellar masters have become worldwide renowned vintners.

However, in many businesses in Eppan the next generations have taken over – and they have their own views and ideas concerning their future and Eppan’s future as a holiday, culture and indulgence region. Someone who set off on his bike …

… and returned after 17 months and 20,000 kilometres: Time isn’t of essence for Matthias Schwarz but rather the road that he manages to cover with his mountain-bike. Like for example from Eppan to Saudi Arabia and back.

Bike-packing is cycling with light luggage. Whether 35 kilos can be considered light is up for discussion. What is more important is that the man from Eppan has the most necessary things with him for his tour: indispensable are a tent,

a sleeping-bag, clothes, toiletries, a gas cooker, cards, a diary and a mobile phone. Whereby the 31 year old only uses the latter for emergencies and certainly not for social media. On top of that his only companion: his mountain-bike.

the planned one but the actually cycled road. „Because the tour is allowed to evolve,“ says the mountain-biker. It doesn’t matter if the actual goal isn’t achieved. The original plan to cycle to Central Asia in fact turned into Saudi Arabia. „There is a goal, but it has simply changed“ he chuckles. And so from October 2022 he journeyed from Italy through 18 countries and 12 nations to Iran in time for his best friend‘s wedding. And then the idea cropped up to return home by bike, too, and so the bikepacker headed home from Saudi Arabia after visiting the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Detours and worries

The biggest challenges: rain and heat. The biggest worry: to get injured. „At the beginning it’s a big issue that nearly kills you, but the gradual approach makes it possible“ Schwarz explains. What drives and carries him: itchy feet, the desire to travel, the sense of freedom, the curiosity whether it’s actually possible? „A bit of everything.“ Time is not import-

ant. „The mountain in front of me is my aim not the speed at which I scale it“, he says. If the mountain is too high he goes to sleep half way up and tackles the rest the following day. Like this everything is possible. „And sometimes I choose detours - just because I prefer the route.“

Hospitality and sociability

With so much time alone it can happen that there is too much time to think. „ However, it’s a cool sensation to get on with oneself and one‘s thoughts. And very often they are limited to the most essential: Do I need a toilet? Am I hungry? Is it cold?“ Schwarz primarily slept in his tent somewhere in the bushes outside towns or villages. He is there to cycle not to sightsee. „Although … mosques are my favourite buildings. There is running water, a toilet, a place to rest“ says Schwarz impressed by the hospitality in the Muslim countries.

And yet people react very differently to a bike-packer.

„I’m actually not a loner, but I prefer to undertake such tours on my own“ says Schwarz. I can absorb more in that way. From the country, the people, the road. Because that’s what counts. Not necessarily

The road and the goal

There, where cycle trips are already known, like in Turkey or Georgia the tourist has to be the one to make contact. There where this phaenomena is just taking root, like in Oman and Saudi Arabia „ you nearly need to shield yourself in order to have your peace.“

Travel and social commitment

Back at home the prospect of a working life „run by others“ in a new job throws up certain concerns as ultimately „for one and a half years I was my own boss.“

However, as a street-worker Schwarz can act out his social self. And occasionally fill up his travel fund, because despite sponsors it needs quite a few savings for such ventures.

Was that the end of bike-packing?

„Can I tick this off my list or am I hooked? I already asked myself these questions on my trip.“ says Schwarz. The answer remains open, however, he already has a few ideas…

„You can cycle in so many different ways that actually there’s something for everyone,“ Matthias Schwarz says. A bike can be used for a short tour, a long detour or even for half a world trip.

Cycling, but properly!

It’s not only important to know the basics when checking your bike but also to know the basic rules of behaviour:

◌ Be considerate of pedestrians (Signal your arrival in good time and reduce your speed)

Sudtiroler Schlutzer

Ingredients (4 servings)

dough:

150 g rye flour

100 g wheat flour

1 egg

50-60 ml luke warm water

1 tbsp oil salt

Filling:

150 g spinach, cooked (ca. 300 g fresh spinach)

50 g onions

1/2 garlic

1 tbsp butter

100 g cream cheese or ricotta

1 tbsp parmesan cheese, grated

1 tbsp chives

1 pinch of nutmeg pepper from a pepper mill salt

Additional ingredients: parmesan, grated brown butter chives, cut, for decoration at the end

Method

[ ca. 1,5 hours ]

Making the dough

Mix the different flour types, place in garland form on a pastry board and salt. Whisk the egg with the luke warm water and the oil, pour into the middle of the flour garland and need it into a smooth dough from the inside to the outside. Let the dough rest for 30 minutes.

Folding

Wet the edge of the dough with water and fold the dough sheets lengthwise on top of each other. Immediately press the interspaces and edges with your fingers.

Bringing into shape

Now the Schlutzkrapfen receive their typical half-moon shape. This is done with a serrated pastry wheel or a dough cutter (diameter 7-10 cm). The rest of the dough is re-kneaded and reprocessed.

Driving out

Keep driving the dough out thinner and thinner through the pasta machine until you have nice long pasta sheets. Make sure you have enough flour so the rollers of the machine don’t stick. Work the dough as quickly as possible so it doesn’t dry out.

Laying out

Lay the thin pasta sheets on a floured surface and carefully smooth them out.

Mixing the filling

Chop the spinach finely, steam the onions and the garlic in butter, add the spinach and let it cool. Add the cream cheese, parmesan and chives and season with nutmeg, salt and pepper and mix well.

Rolling out

Cut finger thick slices from the dough and roll them out softly with a rolling pin on a floured surface. Then put them through the pasta machine and drive them out quite thickly.

Filling

Place the filling with a small spoon into the middle of the dough sheets. Leave a finger’s width between the singular spinach heaps.

Proper storing

Lay the finished Schlutzkrapfen onto a floured surface so they don’t stick to the base before cooking. The Schlutzkrapfen can also be frozen in this way.

Serving

Carefully place the Schlutzkrapfen onto a plate or dish, sprinkle with grated or shaved parmesan cheese and douse with brown butter. At your pleasure garnish with chives. Serve them hot.

Enjoy your meal!

Cooking

Fill a pot ¾ full with water, salt the water and bring it to boil. Carefully place the Schlutzkrapfen into the water. After 3-5 minutes of cooking time ( the Schlutzkrapfen will rise to the surface) take them out with a ladle and let them drip.

Two hearts beat in Silvia Dellagiacoma’s chest and in her Atelier Internodiciotto. The first one beats to the rhythm of uncountable hand-guided stitches. In her very own technique the fashion designer crafts refined embroideries on selected clothes items. „After 10 years working for Valentino I searched for my own niche and found it in hand embroidery, “ says Silvia describing the rebirth of an old craftsmanship. In fact such creations of art cannot be produced industrially. Furthermore it‘s not only about the use of different coloured threads, but of numerous glass pearls and sequins, which characterise the singularity and uniqueness of the embroideries.

„ Normally one knows this from the Haute Couture, but here you can find it on a smaller scale affordable for everyone“ she exclaims with a glance at the decorated t-shirts, jumpers, hats, key rings and broaches. Also bespoke creations are possible, like for example an embroidered wedding dress, a traditional scarf or an elegant work waistcoat.

All this is now created in the new Atelier in the centre of St.Michael. Here each piece is produced individually and anyone can watch. But Internodiciotto is also a boutique. The fashion designer cares about pieces of clothing from natural or recycled materials from chosen companies. In between you can find earrings from Alice Sembenati from Rome or favouritepairsbydani and the room scents by Teatro Fragranze Uniche. And what always floats in the air is a special appreciation for raw materials and handiwork and a lot of emotion.

A chandelier decorated with delicate roses not only graces the booklet of the vintagerie „The lady with the hat“ but also illuminates the road with a warm light in the evenings. Exactly where the opening of a wrought-iron door leads into a world of beautiful things.

The world of Petra Heschgl. „ I am a hunter and collector“, says the lady with the hat.

As she loves and wears hats it is her nickname, identifying feature and trade name all in one. And therefore the hats made by South Tyrol’s star hat maker Reinhard Plank have a special value. They join ranks with a collection of „treasures that would normally probably be lost“.

Heschgl buys scented candles from niche companies such as Coreterno or Frederica Tessadri Candele, jewellery from Officine Lamour and high –quality paperware from Grafiche Tassotti. Her passion for note books is unmistakable. With a view at the porcelain butter dishes Heschgl asks with a socio-critical tone: „ We take the butter out of the fridge a couple of times a day, so why can the container not be pretty? Especially as butter tastes much better on glass or porcelain“. The supply ranges from a pencil for 3,80 Euro to a French washing bowl with jug for 500 Euro.

At first glance one immediately notices the earrings in shiny colours. Handmade with vegan leather they inevitably steal the show from the suitcase in which they are hanging. But only until Maria Puff Gius, with her stylish grey short hair, steps out from behind her sewing table. The Atelier ringfinger in the centre of St.Pauls is an extension of herself. For 17 years the Design artisan has been designing, sewing, glueing, sawing, drilling or soldering her unique objects. Her daughter Alexandra supports her by sewing and decorating. So a treasure chest of rings, earrings and necklaces, from jewellery to bags and rucksacks to scarves and hats opens itself – everything at a „fair price“. Because everything that is handmade needs time and a good design needs an artisanal background. What all the products have in common is certain lightness – no fabric, no ribbon, no glass, no metal should weigh down the wearer.

With nature as her teacher Maria’s ideas wander from her head straight to her hands, she doesn’t need big templates. Hence bags are produced from patterns projected onto linen fabric, summer hats made of bast on an airy fabric, winter hats out of alphorn loden cloth. „The rucksack with the dot is our main distinctive feature“, says Maria. The robust fabrics for the rucksacks are used for sun awnings or tarpaulins. Upcycling is a big topic. Yet also many things are repaired or optimised, for example in the form of earrings that don’t fall out or inherited jewellery that needs to be changed. „Oh yes, and we need to remake the earrings made of patterned fabric“ says Maria and reaches for a cup of coffee, which her customers value nearly as much as the lightness of her words and creations.

You can find cups and plates, glass bells and candle sticks, picture frames and mirrors as well as antique dolls with handmade outfits and porcelain crockery for doll‘s houses.

The sense of wellbeing of an orangery paired with an escape into a different age through objects with a history make the vintagerie in St.Pauls a place where you can let your soul wander. The vintagerie in St.Pauls exudes the complacency of an orangery paired with the feeling of being kidnapped by objects with a history into a different age – a place to relax.

And every treasure that finds a new owner leaves the shop with a suitable paper bag.

A glance at the window display of the Glass Atelier SIBIArt in St. Michael shows how diverse the material glass can be. There are glasses and bottles painted with a snappy slogan, wall paintings and even a chess set made of glass. „It’s transparent, hard and at the same time fragile „ says Sibylle Pederiva, who is fascinated by the raw material on which she artistically paints. What she most appreciates is „the freedom when designing the objects“. And therefore she prefers to create personal bespoke pieces like for example the very popular birth pictures.

„I put on the name, birth date, birth place and star sign“, the glass painter from Eppan reveals about her favourite pieces. She uses both flat and hollow glass. Sybille paints the glass and then burns it in the furnace. The best ideas for personal gifts for special occasions such as birthdays, weddings, company anniversaries or even souvenirs often arise by talking to her customers.

We attach great importance to natural high quality fashion, which is produced in the surrounding area and which finds its place in our shop with good knowledge and conscience.

Outside the Lido there are a few sun loungers and from there you can see the entire Montiggler Lake.

I particularly enjoy visiting the town hall square in Eppan. I’m originally from Eppan but I have been living in Bolzano for a long time now. There is a special atmosphere in the country and I enjoy this especially in the village centre.

Fresh from the fieldswhat a taste!

Fruit and vegetables from the supermarket often have a long way until they are sold and eaten. However, this isn’t necessary. Eppan’s farm shops and stalls offer freshly harvested alternatives.

From 4.30 am on there is a lot of hustle and bustle. „We harvest every day, it couldn’t be any fresher“, says Simon Brugger from the Überetscher Bauernloden. This is in fact a charming vending trailer situated at the beginning of the Überetsch directly on the main road. Every day from 9am to 7pm you can find mainly self-cultivated fruit and vegetables. Farmer Daniel Zanetti is responsible for this. In the meadows and fields in Montiggl and St.Pauls plums, apricots, various peaches, apples, grapes and nuts are grown but also early and late lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, courgettes, radishes and whatever else grows seasonally.

From the beginning of April until the beginning of November there is always a great range of 0-kilometre products. „You can taste this and the people value it,“ says Brugger who is responsible for the sale. They have been active for 5 years now and customers have become regular customers and guests have become regular guest customers. Sheep graze around the trailer. „So we save on mowing. And hens run around and their free range eggs are of course directly sold“ Brugger reveals. Although the initial 8 hours per day have turned into 14 hours he values his job „ because it isn’t a monotonous day job.“ And after work there is no rest but the fruit and vegetables need to be preserved and made into juices because the farm stall also sells homemade juices and jams.

Tastiness from the market stall

Probably nowhere the customer is closer to freshly harvested fruit and vegetables than at the Parthhof in St.Pauls. Twice a week the farm gate is opened and the market stall is set up in the inner yard - always on Wednesdays and Saturdays (from 8 until 12)

What can you get there? „Everything that we grow ourselves,“ says Paul Zuchristian, who started this kind of market directly on the farm with his wife Uschi seven years ago. „The taste and the freshness make the difference“ the farmer is convinced.

30 different types of vegetables grow on one acre of land. From spinach and chard to cabbage and turnips, celery and potatoes to leek and onions. In addition there are the orchards with apples and pears, apricots, peaches and plums. „And we harvest 5 different types of cherries so that there are always cherries available from the beginning of June until the beginning of July“ the enthusiastic farmer recounts. The assortment is rounded off with blueberries and eggs from the farm hens.

It is blue and round, ripe and healthy: the talk is of the blueberry. In 2019 farmer Christoph Kofler dedicated half an acre of land to growing the American cultivated blueberry on his Egarterhof farm in Missian. „ From the beginning of June until the end of July we sell the blueberry directly from the farm three times a week (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays from 5.30 pm – 6pm)“, says the farmer who owns and runs orchards and vineyards.

His interest for blueberries came from a former employer. Today the berries ripen on a field in Unterrain and are picked there daily by diligent hands. „Each single berry, and only when it is ripe enough, is picked by hand“, says Kofler talking about the labour-intensive production.

Nevertheless a decent amount is picked because the blueberries are mainly sold from one kilo to 5 kilos packed in cardboard boxes. His wife Lisa and „senior boss“ Hildegard lend a helping hand. „Some customers buy a whole stock for the freezer and sprinkle a few berries on their daily breakfast muesli. Others eat them freshly on the spot. That’s when they taste best,“ the farmer is convinced.

Goodness straight from the farm

Anna Sparer calls her two small but fine alcoves with homemade farm products from the manor Grustdorf in the centre of St.Michael „product corner“. There you can find everything that is seasonal from the garden and the fields. For example jams and herbal salts, grapes, apples and unfiltered apple juice, depending on the harvest time also apricots, cherries, plums, pickled vegetables and eggs from the sometimes 70 farm chickens. „Whatever is going at the moment“ says the farmer’s wife who also lets interested tourists that are staying in her two holiday apartments enjoy some of the products, according to Roter Hahn style.

Secluded form the street, because a farm wall surrounds the historical noble manor. Only once you step inside the gate can you see the stables, tool sheds and the big garden with mixed orchard. Sparer has prepared the internal product corner for the house guests at the entrance to the old wine cellar. For passers-by there is a little wooden hut outside on the St.-Anna road with products to take out and a money box to pay.

They are young, ambitious and represent the new generation of winemakers. Although all three are dedicated to producing wine, their working environment couldn’t be more different. A glimpse at a job between quality awareness, pressure to succeed and own ideas.

Gasser started working in the business in 2017 and – due to career prospects – has remained. In this period he was allowed to learn and do a lot. Now, as Terzer’s successor, his has to manage big wines and a big brand. „It’s certain that I will continue to work ‚true to St.Michael-Eppan‘ “ says the man from Bolzano.

WINEMAKING AS A CRAFT

As cellar master Gasser in future will have to manage the entire dynamics, always be there where there is a problem.

SUCCESSOR TO A LUMINARY

A good departure. Wine growing legend Hans Terzer has been concerned about this his entire life. Now that his retirement from the Winery St. Michael-Eppan is getting nearer the question is undoubtedly asked who will follow in his footsteps. One thing is sure: Hans Terzer will hand over the helm of his life’s work to Jakob Gasser, a young, ambitious oenologist. This comprises an annual production of 2.5 million bottles with numerous awards for the wines and the business (Italy’s cooperative winery 2024). Big footsteps for a 29 year old, who is fully aware of his responsibility „but pressure spurs me on“.

90% of the time his mentor and himself are on the same wave length. It’s only little things over which they disagree, because the collaboration is shaped by mutual respect. „It’s very exciting to work with Hans who practically has an answer to every question“ says Gasser. Neverthelesss, it’s the job of the young ones to question old concepts: Only because something has been done in a specific way for 20 years doesn’t mean that it has to stay like that forever.“

„There is a quality awareness from every winery worker up to the cellar master“, Gasser reveals as their secret to success – and „Quality is the standard and from there it only goes upwards.“ This also applies to the premium wines St.Valentin. Gasser sees his playing field in the Appius and The Wine Collection: „It’s just as demanding to produce 7,000 bottles of an excellent Appius as a constantly high-quality St.Valentin wine“, he knows. However, this doesn’t worry him. „Winemaking is essentially a craft“ says Gasser. Something that he was allowed to learn and is still learning from one of the greats.

„I also did my apprenticeship there“, says Andreas Wolkan. The 32 year old worked 12 years in the laboratory of the Winery St.Michael and wasn’t only entrusted with the analyses but also included in the composition of the wines or the processes in the cellar. Thereby he was able to gain „a good all-round view“ and in September 2023 he started making wine himself – namely in the newly founded Winery Romen.

„As a young person one looks for challenges. It’s nice to see the whole path from the grape to the bottle and to be a part of it“, says the man from Eppan. Nevertheless he works in a team and consults with the others.

THE THIRD OPINION

„We define big decisions, the stylistics of wine, together“ the cellar master says and discusses accordingly with the Romen family. He specifies a certain path, but also listens to a second and third opinion. The vineyard consists of 6 acres of ground. Thereby the production of 30,000 bottles lies in Wolkan’s hands.

The seven existing wines are joined in 2024 under Wolkan by a Merlot Riserva and a Chardonnay Riserva. „The locations have the potential to produce something special, something exceptional,“ Wolkan is convinced. In a small business it is far easier to focus on the peculiarities of the single locations. To get the best out of them is his incentive.

NO PREDETERMINED PATHS

What he likes about working in a manageable and especially new winery is the independence, the possibility to operate without predetermined paths or expectations due to a certain image. „I feel completely free and can organise my own work. The results are what matters.“ he says. And with regard to the awards in the wine sector Wolkan honestly admits:

„It’s definitely an aim to reach a high number of points“. That is the gratification for all the hard work. With the bottling of Wolkan’s „first harvest“ this spring the first steps have been taken.

A CHARITY WINE TO GET STARTED

Philipp Zubalsing had a media-effective start into his new job. The 38 year old has been cellar master in the Winery St.Pauls since July 2023, a co-operative of 200 members and 185 acres of ground. The creation of „Lumina“, a charity wine for „Südtirol hilft“, was his first personal achievement. With the public presentation of the wine the man from Missian also moved into the public limelight. „New roles and tasks came my way“, Zublasing reflects. Challenges, which he managed to master brilliantly as part of a co-operative team.

THE FIRST HARVEST

In addition he had to get an overview of what already existed – and that with a yearly production of 1.5 million bottles. „I knew the wines already from tastings“ Zublasing says. Nevertheless his first task consisted in tasting his way through the variety of wines and vintages. With an eye on what was already stored. He was particularly looking forward to „his first harvest“ in autumn. The team worked really well. I slot in to what already exists,“ Zublasing describes. Nevertheless he would like to embark on a few new paths. The new vintage should convince with more freshness and elegance and also express his own personal style.

THE WORK BEGINS IN THE VINEYARD

„With wine one has to think in 5 to 10 years“, the cellar master ponders. And he refers to his principle to create strong wines full of character that best reflect the terroir through an increased focus on quality. For this it needs close collaboration with the wine farmers in the vineyards and a gentle maturation in the cellar, in order to preserve the characteristics of the grape harvest. Zublasing: „The aim is to consistently follow the path so that it comes into its own in the bottle and can then be identified.“

Following Scherer’s footsteps

The sculptor, painter, graphic designer and glass artist is one of the most well-known and successful South Tyrolean artists of the 2nd half of the 20th century. His works comprise wall- paintings and various drawings, watercolour and acrylic paintings as well as sculptures, mosaics and glasswork. He was born in Kortsch in 1928 and after his apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Schlanders he studied Arts and Architecture in Vienna. The art teacher then became an independent artist. Many noteworthy glass sculptures were produced as an associate of the glass hut „Fucina degli Angeli“. Study trips took him far. After many moves he has been living in the Palazzo Malfatti in Ala since

You can meet an artist in many different ways, also through his artwork. Whether in the Kursaal, the school or the cemetery: Robert Scherer’s creations are omnipresent.

White mane, white apron: Robert Scherer’s appearance in his painting outfit was always somehow in contrast to his creations. Especially his wall paintings in and on public buildings nowadays characterise the image of many villages in South Tyrol , including Eppan. Particularly the colours yellow and blue are very present, probably not entirely by chance. They are in fact the colours of the municipality’s coat of arms.

An artist on many (wrong) paths

Born in Vinschgau he moved to Eppan In 1969. Eppan and Kaltern became the adopted home for this bustling and frequently travelling artist. „I always need to leave. I have probably inherited this from the travellers,“ he once said. He never managed to stay in one place for a long time.

And yet numerous works in Eppan bear witness to Scherer’s presence and his enormous range of creations. On a round tour through the municipality one can follow very nicely in Scherer’s footsteps. And maybe the maestro himself will return to the Überetsch one day? On the occasion of his 95th birthday last year the rather reclusive and lonely artist had the „wish to return to Eppan“ from his Palazzo which is 100 kilometres further south in Ala. „I would really like that.“

Eppan’s kitchen masters blend South Tyrolean enjoyment with the influences from the South to a harmonious, exciting and tasty whole.

I like contrasts and you can find this also in my dishes. I’m often in the forest in the early morning to collect fresh herbs. Like deer and milk they represent the products of our country. However, I also love the sea and therefore I combine the raw materials with a lot of emotion and even more endurance. The right quantity is essential, then it harmonises perfectly.

I celebrate local cuisine, but I see it with different eyes. Even if in the meantime I feel at home here I don’t know all the traditions and so I play around with techniques, consistencies and raw materials in order to create dishes with a vision and local colour.

One click and you can delve into the underworld

Whoever takes out his mobile phone in Girlan doesn’t do this to take a selfie or a holiday photo. Moreover it’s the start of an exciting tour into the subterranean cellar world of the wine village.

Wineworld Girlan was founded in March 2008 with the goal to protect and record the unique historical heritage of the subterranean cellars of the wine village Girlan and to pass it on to the next generation. Top priority is that the private cellars are bought by the municipality and made accessible to the general public. In the mean time among other things the virtual cellar tour enables a unique insight. www.weinweltgirlan.org

Who has never experienced this: a special place, a unique sightseeing object, but it’s closed. Exactly when one is standing right in front of it. This can‘t happen in Girlan. Because here one’s own smartphone becomes the door into the underground.

How is it possible that a passer-by can have a look at the subterranean wine cellars without even entering them?

Eberhard Daum, President of the Wineworld Girlan: The virtual cellar tour makes this possible. On a walk through the wine village Girlan anyone can get a wonderful insight into what is under the earth right where he is standing in that very moment.

How does the virtual cellar tour work?

If you walk through Girlan you can see a palm-sized sign with a QR-Code and the name of the house on the buildings with important cellars. If you scan the QR-Code you receive answers to the following questions: What does it look like down there? How big is the cellar underneath my feet? Are there barrels, old walls, old vaults?

What exactly can I see?

The QR-Code primarily shows me photos of what is below ground. Sometimes it’s two or three rooms, however, also insights into cellars on two or three levels are opened up. It goes down and down again and when you think you have arrived in hell then the floor opens up once more. You can see enormous barrels on wooden beams or wonderful old vaults. All accompanied by a short description.

And what about videos?

In the mean time there are also four videos which are very popular. Their creation is very time- consuming. The idea, however, is to expand this field.

So all you need is a dose of curiosity and a mobile phone?

Yes. Something that nowadays everyone has. As the idea sprang up about a decade ago QR-Codes were a novelty and the idea itself very innovative. Today it’s a breeze to gain access with one’s phone.

Most tourists know that Girlan is a wine village and so they undoubtedly visit for that reason. But some aren’t aware of this fact and so for them it is a big surprise. Only a small part is accessible. A great opportunity to experience the cellar world is during the „Cellar festival“ which is held every four years. A second possibility is to join a guided cellar tour offered by Wineworld Girlan and the tourist association. And the third, virtual possibility has been available through QR-Codes for almost three years now.

What makes Girlan’s cellar world so special?

It’s a unique subterranean cellar world. A historical, but also architectural jewel. Many young people nowadays know what a cellar is. However, the awareness that every farmer had a cellar and that in-house wines were pressed and stored there has nearly been lost. As well as the fact that some cellars have disappeared due to construction work by the real estate industry. A couple of years ago Girlan was bigger underground than above ground.

When and how did the idea for a virtual cellar tour arise?

The idea actually arose already some time ago. In August 2021 the book „Kellerwelten –Weinwelten: Das Kellerensemble von Girlan – ein eu ropäisches Unikat“ was published by the Board of Trustees for Technical Cultural Assets. At the same time pictures and information from the book were provided for the virtual tour. Basically it is all based on the survey of the cellars by the University of Innsbruck between 2003 and 2005. Thereby 52 cellars of Girlan’s village centre were surveyed and a cellar plan was created.

With one click one can see into private areas: what do the owners say to this?

Initially the cellar owners were naturally quite sceptical about the fact that everyone was being given the permission to look into private spaces. In many cases it’s an intimate approach. However, ultimately, they enjoy showing what peculiarities are hidden on their property under the earth.

What is the aim of Wineworld Girlan?

Currently it is the aspiration to save the old private cellars from destruction or misappropriation and to make them accessible to the public. The awareness for this is given. Overall we are speaking of an area of about 1,000 square metres that hereby are „saved“. However, it’s also about the bigger awareness that old doesn’t necessarily mean bad or new always mean good. It’s about preserving old things without getting in the way of progress.

A house of worship built on a wine cellar or converted into a living room? Eppan is rich in churches and chapels and they in turn are full of diverse and partly quaint stories. A journey.

Epann is South Tyrol‘s richest municipality with regard to manor houses, castles and fortresses. „A manor house usually had a chapel, because religion at that time was an integral part of life“ explains the landscape guide Elisabeth Menke. Every Wednesday she tracks down the historical buildings and events in Eppan as part of the guided tour „Vineyards – castles – manor houses“.

Around the centre of St.Michael alone there are more than 20 chapels and churches, which are worth a closer look at. Some of them bear special treasures which an unknowing eye can’t detect. Apart from the historical background Menke also knows a few „churchly curiosities“.

The castle chapel: It’s part of the castle complex Hocheppan (Hocheppaner Weg 16) and was consecrated to Saint Magdalene in 2017 by Bishop Muser. It is not only the oldest chapel (built before 1123) but art-historically also the most precious with its Romanic frescoes with a Byzentine influence. Impressive are Christ’s Birth, the Parabel of the Wise and the Foolish and the Massacre of the Innocents in Bethlehem. On the Northern outer wall you can see Tyrol’s oldest secular wall painting, a hunting scene with an equestrian and a fleeing deer.

Famous is the „Knödel eater“, a lady who, during Christ’s birth, takes out a dumpling from a pan over an open fire and tastes it. Its the oldest illustration of a Knödel.

St. Valentin Chapel: It was built into the hillside of the Manor House of the Nobles of St.Valentin (Matschatscherweg 18, Berg). The uniqueness, therefore, is that on entering the visitor finds himself in the gallery. The gaze falls onto a Gothic altar.

You can see Eppan’s oldest coat of arms carved in stone.

St. Justina Church: Situated above St.Pauls (St. Justinastraße 57) it is very popular for weddings and anniversaries. On the East side the stone protrusion of a Romanic choir from the 14th century can be recognised. The Barock carved altar is situated in a neo Gothic choir in the North part. Noticeable is God the Father in the gable.

The various building styles are clearly visible in the chapel.

Church of the 14 Holy Helpers: Situated in Gaid. On the altar picture the 14 holy helpers are depicted. These are patron saints who died as martyrs and they are shown with the object with which they died. Among them: Barbara with the tower, Margareta with the worm and Katharina with the wheel.

Eustach Franzin von Zinnenberg, benefactor of the rennovation around 1638, let himself be immortalised in the high altar with his family, his 3 wives and 16 children, all dressed in the same clothes.

St. Anna Church: It’s situated opposite Manor Hammerstein belonging to the Von Wohlgemuth family (Kaltererstraße 1-3). The church tower of the St.Anna church rises up behind a loggia which connects a Gothic building with a Renaissance palace.

Maria Snow Chapel: Situated in Castle Gandegg (Pigeno 17). The gallery room is fitted with a Humper organ.

According to legend the name comes from the fact that it snowed in summer.

John the Baptist chapel: This chapel is integrated into the outer walls of Manor Gleifheim.

(St.-Anna-Weg 32). Above the altar, on the excerpt painting, there is a depiction of Joseph with baby Jesus. On the back one can recognise the white line, a symbol of purity and dignity. On the Northern side wall there is a picture where John the Baptist is being beheaded.

St. Sebastian Church: Built near Castle Englar (Pigeno 42) with a dignified distance to the castle itself. Whereas the tower recalls a fortified tower and is of Romanesque origin, the church and castle are of Gothic nature. Baroque altars were literally squeezed into the Gothic pointed-arch niches. The church was built by the „noble and firm knight“ Christian von Firmian in 1475.

St. Katharina Chapel: It is situated below Schloss Moos-Schulthaus (Schulthauserweg 4) with a pointed gable roof but without a tower and therefore it is hardly recognisable as a chapel. A Romanesque square building with a flat ceiling, beautifully renovated and very inviting. When Kaiser Josef II. had church buildings closed in the 18th century in the interests of the enlightening Absolutism the chapel became a living room – right up until the 1970s. Then the chapel was re-consecrated and renovated and now with its light sandstone floor and wooden benches invites people to linger. In the round apsis the world ruler is depicted in a fresco.

Below the chapel there is a wine cellar.

Gleif Church: A Passion church, pompous and colourful with numerous gold ornaments and lots of angels. Two pictures recount the story of two miracles. When blasting the stones for the church construction the charge didn’t ignite. When the demolition master went to check there was an explosion, however, through a miracle he wasn’t injured. And as a rain gutter detached itself from the roof an angel saved the sacristan standing below. Church in the finest „Icing-Baroque“.

Maria Namen Chapel: This chapel is situated within Manor Thalegg (Maderneidstraße 11). It has a barrel vault and an altar which, however, doesn’t face East. On the outside there is a picture of Mary of Succor, inspired by the Image of Mary by Lucas Cranach on the High Altar of the Cathedral in Innsbruck. The image of Mary who has no delicate hand but a strong farmer’s hand.

CASTELMUSIKA

opens gates and hearts Historical walls, open manors and accessible private chapels: On the Culture Walking Day Castelmusika Eppan opens the gates of its historical gems. It offers food and drink and sweetens the walking tour with interludes of various musical groups and traditional clubs. On 20th October 2024.

Holy-Cross-Chapel: The Baroque house chapel is situated at Manor Reinsberg and has a cupola with an eightsided lantern. The chamber organ is a peculiarity. A jewel, impressive is the stucco work on the ceiling.

St. Andrew Chapel: Mentioned on Castle Freudenstein (Matschatscherweg 6) already in 1231. Rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 19th century the chapel received a neo Gothic decor which was then stolen.

What has the Dorffest in St.Pauls got that other festivals haven’t got?

Dominik Ebner, President of the Club Association St.Pauls: Well, certainly the special flair – if only for the historic alleys of this century old wine village.

And it is said that the people from St.Pauls have certain peculiarities … This is best understood through the quote of a German guest who said: „In St.Pauls it’s how it should be.“ This is what he would expect of a village community, starting with its solidarity. It awakened a sense of home in him. We Paulsner like organising and are not work-shy. And furthermore we like to party (laughs). Also during the time before and after the Fest there is a lot of movement.

What is offered at the stalls?

Saturday, 31.8. at 5 p.m.: Opening with star march on the village square until 1 a.m.

When the alleys quiver in St.Pauls then its once again Dorffest time.

13 clubs turn the wine village into a party mile on the first weekend of September – including peculiarities of St.Pauls.

Sunday, 1.9. at 9 a.m.: Festive service in St. Paul‘s Cathedral until midnight: Festivities

Everything your heart desires. Every club discusses what it would like to offer. Some of them are already known for their specialities like for example the fire brigade for its fish specialities or the hunting horn club for its deer goulash. The music band serves meat soup among other things and the farmers‘ wives prepare cakes for dessert.

Every club has its specific place. This is discussed with the farm owners as the stalls, apart from the ones on the village square, are all on private ground.

What are the highlights?

Very special are most definitely the old farmyards and manors with their old wine cellars connected by picturesque alleys. It’s a great place to party. Also not to be forgotten is the star march at the opening on Saturday evening at 5pm. Thereby four music bands enter the village square from the four accesses and play a march together. From a churchly point of view it’s the high mass on Sunday at 9am in the cathedral „Dom auf dem Lande“. And of course the festival itself until midnight on Sunday.

Since when does the festival exist?

The beginnings go back to the 80s. At the beginning it took place every year. Always on the first weekend in September. Until now this date has remained the same. However, in the meantime the festival takes place every second year, always in an even year, such as 2024.

13 village clubs commit themselves to make the Dorffest St. Pauls an unforgettable experience for all visitors and a success for all voluntary helpers.

The promoter of the Dorffest is the club association St.Pauls. What purpose has a club for 13 other clubs got?

The club association is the spokesperson for the singular clubs. Its president is responsible for the overall organisation.

Unfortunately due to the reform of the third sector not every club, especially not the small clubs, are prepared to take part anymore, because for only minor activities the registration into the National Club Register (RUNTS) is too complex. If one doesn’t inscribe, however, then the profit is taxed and then the effort doesn’t pay off. To tax honorary work is anyhow senseless. A reform for small clubs and a provincial club register are desperately needed. To that effect political commitment would be

She went to the hotel school and worked as a receptionist in a hotel. It was foreseeable that we would return to the business.

Pressure for the successors

We never had the pressure to enter the family business. It was more or less a subtle process which Corona and the lack of staff accelerated. If we hadn’t come back another solution would have been found.

The secret of success

In 2023 we celebrated our 50th anniversary. Grandma Olga had opened a snack-bar on the farm in 1972 and then in 1974 the restaurant. She taught us that quality must always be right – and showed us by example during all these years how to work consistently through dedication and diligence. She never said „no“. You can’t take that for granted anymore.

First insights

Es ist eine anstrengender Job, It’s a tiring job like in some other sectors as well. However, the commitment pays off. Furthermore through building our holiday flats we have a new and beautiful project for the future.

Sleeping and eating in Eppan

With regard to accommodation Eppan still has potential in the area of holiday flats. In the gastronomy sector we are well set up. Unterrain itself actually has more to offer than the centre of Eppan. It would be nice if businesses would coordinate closing periods during the interim period. Like it used to be.

Generation thinking

Naturally the incentive is given to take over when the business is now in its 33rd generation. But I don’t feel the obligation. It’s more that I enjoy the topic wine and I feel in good hands.

Generationen-change

There are examples where the change of generation can turn into a problem especially when the senior bosses hold on for too long and don’t give the young ones a chance.

If one can step into the job aged 24, like myself, one has a totally different enthusiasm than aged 40. I continuously take on more duties. Therefore it will be a smooth transition.

The secret of success

What distinguishes us from others are our very good own locations and the collaboration within the family context. Our three vineyards are managed by my aunts and cousins.

Established paths

Certain parameters are predetermined in the cellar. Following a guideline and having good basic requirements also makes things much easier. And I am furthermore in the lucky position to be able to work autonomously and have the possibility – after consultations- to develop my own ideas. My father and I are both willing to compromise. Therefore both of us are able get our money’s worth.

South Tyrol is a top bike destination. Some municipalities understand this and are able to market it better than others. It would be nice that guests come here not only because it is beautiful but because it’s a great place for biking. From a marketing perspective there is still potential. Name Age Business Employment

The roll of the senior boss I am glad for the experiences. Youth nowadays often makes too over-hasty decisions. It’s good if somebody slows you down but at the same time doesn’t hinder you. Experience gives you a certain composure.

In Eppan there are a lot of businesses where vineyards and wine shops are situated very close to each other. Thereby all aspects surrounding wine can be experienced, which isn’t the case everywhere.

It’s a fact that I really do like biking in all its different aspects (laughs). I was never forced to be here in the business but was here from the start when my father Arthur built the shop with Andreas Hofer. I worked in a bank for a while. Seeing something different is never wrong.

It’s important that the boss is present in the daily business. I am normally often to be found on the sales side, however, I also deal with additional areas such as purchasing.

My father is still here. It’s the two of us. But now he can take things slower. He is pleased that there is someone who can take over.

It’s not that one has to reinvent oneself in the sector. It’s rather little things that need to constantly be improved, not huge ideas. However, it’s important to stay on top of the daily business.

The bike is luckily a very technical product and we focus a lot on the service area. Of course also in our sector there are online sales and big competition. However, we are here for our clients also after a sale.

The famous footsteps

I was free to make a decision as were my siblings, 5 brothers and 2 sisters. During the Corona pandemic the castle became the family seat and it’s nice to work here. My mother, lady of the castle Karoline Fink, involved me in decisions right from the beginning. Also whether we should run the castle simply as an Event location or also as a hotel. My father, the owner, gave us the freedom to try the full programme.

First insights

I work in a very time-consuming sector. Those who manage a luxury line have to be omnipresent.

Moreover, we have to adjust to occurrences in a listed castle. That also means that the kitchen for the restaurant is situated at a distance of 100 metres. That makes the work a bit harder. A certain protection of old things is of course very important and correct, however, there has to be the possibility to run a business sensibly.

Collaboration of generations

My mother has the eye and the experience, I have the drive to build something. We go through the pros and cons together and she trusts me implicitly. Who knows the future better than the young generation? However, she also lets me make my own mistakes, because everyone has to build up his own treasure of experiences.

Advantages of a multi-generation house

Thanks to my father and mother, who passed on their experiences to me, I can fully concentrate on my future and thereby incorporate new thoughts. A multi generation house promotes family closeness. I can rely on the joint support and it helps the exchange of experiences.

The secret of success

Already the castle itself. It’s an incredibly beautiful and old object, which my mother has arranged wonderfully. It attracts international guests. Many of them also get married in our romantic chapel. My heart beats for these occasions. It’s wonderful when one sees a happy wedding couple and one has played a part in order to make their day memorable.

Generation thinking

Already as a small boy I had the idea to eventually join the business. The company’s seat was at home so I was often right in the middle of everything. Grandpa Friedrich was a decorator and in 1967 he turned his attention to fair stands. Today my father Klaus runs the business, I work as an assembly worker in order to get to know and assess all the various aspects of fair stand construction. As there is no explicit training for this in South Tyrol I learn if and how ideas can be implemented in this way. My father is definitely happy that I’m showing an interest, however, he doesn’t put any pressure on me.

Skills

You need to bring some common sense and craftsmanship, because there is a lot of construction work. Innovative ideas are also necessary, but also a portion of flexibility and most of all you need to be resourceful. If there is a problem on site during construction you need to improvise. It’s not possible to finish a day later.

Work place

Everywhere where our clients exhibit. Even if that means setting off with 12 articulated lorries full of material. Most fairs are in Italy or in the German speaking area, but I have been to Norway and France, too.

The secret of success

We are always punctual. Sometimes it was tight, but there was never a case where the fair stand wasn’t ready on time. We are reliable and provide a thorough job.

Naturally one brings family problems into the business and business matters into the family. And for some employees with ambitions it can also seem that the places on the career ladder have already been taken by family members.

Fairs are display windows that will also be very important in the future. Especially because of the personal contact between representatives and clients.

Out and about with the gnomes

Die Wichtelschüler Leni, Flora, Laurin und Josi warten im Schulhof gespannt auf ihren Lehrer Herrn Spektakulus und Adler Sausewind. Der diesjährige Klassenausflug steht an und die Wichtelkinder sind gespannt, wohin sie Adler Sausewind dieses Mal fliegen wird.

How did you get the idea of writing children’s books and combining them with local events?

Nadine Pichler, book author: The idea came to me whilst I was telling my godchildren the story of Nils Holgerson. The story was written so Swedish children would get to know the Swedish regions. It‘s a fact that one can remember things easier if they are connected to a story. And as our children learn about the towns in South Tyrol I called my first book „A school outing on an eagle“ and talked about that topic. Subsequently I wrote five more books, one of them about Eppan.

Who are the characters?

The same as with Nils Holgersson there are gnomes in the story, however, not only one. I send the four gnome pupils Leni, Flora, Josi and Laurin on journeys with their teacher Mr. Spektakulus. And as I liked the idea of flying the gnome class flies to the various destinations on the back of Eagle Sausewind.

The edition about Eppan and surroundings has 12 stopovers. Where does the gnome class go?

They visit classical family destinations. For example the gnomes take a swim in the Montiggler Lake, they visit the Ice Holes and the Gleif chapel with the devil’s rock. I take a look at the various places and then I describe them. Of course also the castles and manors in Eppan are mentioned.

The book is called „The gnomes and the castle ghost Spuki“. So do we also have another character?

Yes, in order for the book to stay exciting the gnomes meet Spuki, the castle ghost, who lives in a flat in Castle Hocheppan and who has never left his flat. So the gnomes fulfil the ghost’s wish to get to know the world outside the castle walls. Some knowledge is imparted about every place that they visit. The stories are educational on the one hand and fun on the other.

What age group are the books for?

The stories have been written for children between 5 and 9. They are suitable to read to the children or also for them to read on their own. The books are full of pictures, illustrated by the Effekt publishing company. They speak for themselves. The children recognise the places and that’s what they like most.

Eppan has a new guest card: What is it exactly?

From 1st March 2024 the new uniform guest card, the South Tyrol Guest Pass, comes into effect. Every guest of a tourist accommodation that is a member of the tourist association is entitled to this card and currently it covers the whole mobility sector.

What does it entitle the guest to?

The South Tyrolean Guest Pass is a ticket for all public means of transport in the network area „südtirolmobil“ , so the guest can discover South Tyrol and its treasures. One can do so sustainably and completely free of charge.

Why has Eppan introduced the South Tyrol Guest Pass?

With this initiative Eppan, together with all the other municipalities along the Alto Adige wine route, sends a clear signal for hospitality and sustainability in our popular holiday destination.

› All regional trains on 4 rail lines with a half hourly and hourly service: Brennero Line: Brennero-Bolzano-Trento

Vinschger Train: Malles-Merano

Merano Line: Merano-Bolzano

› The South Tyrol Guest Pass is linked to the holiday accommodation –this means it is included in the room price at participating accomodations.

› It is valid from 24.00 on the day of arrival until 23:59 on the day of departure.

› Every guest from the age of 6 gets a pass.

› It has the name of the guest and the length of validity (7 days) on.

› You can’t purchase this pass separately.
