2013.2014 Season
The season opens with the great Romantic-era and one of my favorite ballets, Giselle. Demanding technical perfection and outstanding grace, Giselle is a powerful and passionate story that has it all...tragic romance, betrayal and redemption. Spring begins with The Jazz/Blues Project, a riveting “American Experience” program featuring the music of late Jazz saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker in Val Caniporali’s striking Bird’s Nest and Trey McIntyre’s powerful Blue Until June to music popularized by Etta James. Then witness the rock n’ roll incursion of plies and jetés in BRITISH INVASION: The Beatles & The Rolling Stones, a ballet-inspired battle between two of Britain’s legendary bands with Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life and Christopher Bruce’s highly-acclaimed rock ballet Rooster. The season ends with a magical trip to Neverland and a NEW production of Peter Pan and Tour-de-Force: Balanchine! This all-NEW galastyle program includes the company premiere of George Balanchine’s Themes and Variations as its climatic center-piece.

Soulful styling and glorious dance
Love, betrayal and forgiveness reign as The Washington Ballet takes on one of the world’s most beautiful and technically difficult ballets. From the time of its 1841 premiere in Paris, this dramatic and gorgeous ballet has inspired generations of dancers with its tale of a young peasant girl who has a passion for dancing and dies of a broken heart. One of Septime Webre’s all-time favorite classical ballets, Giselle has it all—romance, spirited peasant dances and ghostly spirits. ____________________ Choreography Jean Carolli, Jules Perrot and Marius Petipa Staging Charla Genn and Septime Webre Music Adolphe Adam
Americana at its finest—the iconic music of Etta James and Charlie “Bird” Parker and world-class dance come together in Trey McIntyre’s Blue Until June and Val Caniporali’s Bird’s Nest. When The Beatles and The Rolling Stones invaded America back in the 1960’s rock ‘n roll changed forever. Relive this revolution in Trey McIntyre’s A Day in the Life, an energetic, thrillingly visual and emotional journey set to classic Beatles’ tunes. Through poignant lyrics, harddriving guitar licks and strutting dance, Christopher Bruce’s highly-acclaimed rock ballet Rooster, is the penultimate “battle of the sexes.” ____________________ A Day in the Life Choreography Trey McIntyre Music Songs by The Beatles Rooster Choreography Christopher Bruce Music Songs by The Rolling Stones

Tour-de-Force: Balanchine! Only three performances! The brilliant next chapter of Tour-de-Force, a gala-style program of provocative and engaging, show-stopping classical and contemporary ballets including Swan Lake, Flames of Paris, D-Construction and more. George Balanchine’s Themes and Variations, the evening’s centerpiece, evokes the great period in classical dance when Russian ballet flourished with the aid of Tchaikovsky’s music. Only available to subscribers, Tour-de-Force is a season highlight not to be missed.
