Georgia Southern guard Jelani Hewitt, left, and teammates celebrate after the final buzzer of their 40-36 victory over Texas State at Hanner Fieldhouse Saturday, Jan. 3.
Welcome back — now get your butt to Hanner scorer is guard Jelani Hewitt, who was the leading scorer in the country at one point this season and remains in the top ten at 20.2 points per game. He also gets it done on the defensive end of the floor as he ranks second in the nation with over three steals Brown per game. Big man Trent Wiedeman is a difference-maker on the inside, scoring 13.6 points and pulling down nearly seven rebounds per contest. Southern also got Eric Ferguson back from injury in midDecember and, while he hasn’t quite put up the numbers he did prior to getting hurt, he’s been a welcome addition to the rotation and will only get better as he gets back into game shape after being sidelined for nearly two years. At 6’8”, he’s a nightmare to defend due to his ability to knock down the three and get to the rim. Something tells me it won’t be long before we start seeing highlight reel dunks from him again very soon. Not to mention, with his length, he can be a lock-down defender. The Eagles have five seniors in Hewitt, Wiedeman, Ferguson, Angel Matias and

Buddy Petts on hiatus — but they'll be back Buddy Petts has been sharing its bluesy jam-band vibe with the local Statesboro music scene for the past year and a half, but the group faces a change in the line-up that will impact the band as a whole: the departure of their drummer, Adam Michel, who
recently graduated from Georgia Southern and has moved from the area. Though Adam Michel will be missed, this change will not deter the band from their goals but instead create an opportunity to audition

Curtis Diamond, so there is plenty of experience on this squad. Throw in the young talent of guards Mike Hughes, Jake Allsmiller and Devonte Boykins and forwards Kyle Doyle and Coye Simmons, and this program has a bright future as well. As a team, Georgia Southern is shooting just under 73 percent from the free throw line. Individually, Hewitt is at 90.3 percent and Wiedeman is shooting 81.4 percent. The Eagles are also allowing just 60 points per game and out-rebounding their opponents by over eight boards per game. Defense, free throws and rebounding are a pretty good recipe for winning a lot of basketball games. Quick history lesson: UL-Lafayette won the Sun Belt championship in football, men’s basketball and baseball last year. Georgia Southern has already taken the football crown from the Ragin’ Cajuns, so something tells me they may not like us too much. So why stop at
football? It’s a long season and there’s a ton of basketball to be played, but a win Thursday night would be a big step toward a conference title run. It has been a while since Georgia Southern basketball was winning consistently. Crowd sizes haven’t been what they used to be. Student support hasn’t been what it once was. It’s time to change that. This team is so much fun to watch and has a real chance to make some noise. They deserve that electric atmosphere. So bring it, Eagle Nation. Now that the students are back and we have hit conference play in full stride, the next two months should be a blast. After Thursday night, the Eagles will be on the road for the next three games at Troy, Texas State and UL-Monroe, but then will be at home for seven of the next eight games. But let’s take it one game at a time and send Lafayette home with a loss. Hanner will be rocking Thursday night, so come be a part of it. You won’t regret it.w
potential replacements who may bring something new to the dynamic. "This will take the band in a new direction, sound-wise, which isn't a bad thing. It's changed direction before and it will probably change again after that," said Drew Whitehead, vocalist and rhythm guitar. "But finding someone who has Adam's innate jamming ability — that's going to be hard to replace." Whitehead brings his own flavor to the band as well with his raspy vocals, which have deep roots in good oldfashioned blues. With the combination of Whitehead's blues background to Michel's love for metal, the myriad of personal influences added a dynamic that creates a unique sound. The love for classic oldies has affected not only the sound, but the way the band runs
business as well. Buddy Petts likes to incorporate a personal aspect into how they attract fans and book shows, relying primarily on word of mouth and direct contact as opposed to reaching out completely by social media. "We like making friends in person. It's more of a concrete memory instead of just liking a page on Facebook," Michel said. The band is gaining familiarity in the music scene by playing a variety of cover songs but also mixing in a good number of originals. They can be caught covering anything from The Allman Brothers to Blink-182 and even Rage Against the Machine. Though the songs they play are well known, the

Don’t look now, but Georgia Southern basketball is 10-3. Students, since you left for the break, the Eagles have been rolling. By the way, welcome back — now get your butts to Hanner Thursday night. UL-Lafayette is coming to town for a 7:30 p.m. clash Alex with first place on the line. The Ragin’ Cajuns are bringing a nice, shiny 4-0 conference record into Hanner Fieldhouse. When it’s full and the crowd is into the game, Hanner can be one of the most electric atmospheres anywhere. And it’s awfully tough for an opposing team to come in and win. Southern has won six of its last seven games, and two of its three losses on the season were by two points or less. The other loss was by nine at Illinois in a game that was tied at halftime. This team is legit and could very easily be 12-1 right now. Since the students have been away for a few weeks and we have all been busy over the holidays, let’s bring everyone up to speed. It seems the Eagles have all the pieces in place to make a serious run at a conference title. The team’s leading

BUDDY, from page 7 boys of Buddy Petts have the ability to make them their own with their own specific styles to create a song you have loved for years almost new again. "We want to make sure we play the covers we feel comfortable playing. We're going to actually play one we can rock and it's not fake," said Matt Stratton, lead guitar. The band slips in a half-set of originals that span a wide array of genres, so there is something for everyone to enjoy despite preference. According to Whitehead, however, the band will be scrapping most of their current set
and developing new material to integrate the sound of their new drummer, whenever they find the right musician. With all members studying at Georgia Southern, they proceed with their education still with hopes of music being their main focus and career goal even after the departure of Michel. Michel played his last show with the band the day he graduated, Dec. 12. Buddy Petts is still continuing to search for a drummer who fits the band's vibe. Those who are interested in auditioning, or just staying informed on upcoming shows can check out the band at on Facebook or YouTube.w
While Buddy Petts says goodbye to drummer Adam Michel, the band looks forward to exploring new musical horizons. BEVERLY MANNING/ special

Everything you missed in the last three weeks Lawn wars — Area churches set up a Nativity scene on the courthouse lawn as a Christmas decoration in mid-December, prompting a responding banner from The Freedom From Religion Foundation, which prompted a retaliatory banner from a local group of Christians. All three groups followed the legal and proper procedures in applying for a permit to erect their public displays on the courthouse lawn. Now Bulloch County commissioners are considering changes to the county’s policy regarding displays on the courthouse square. And this is why we can’t have nice things. Fashion for Compassion — The Downtown Statesboro Development Authority joined forces with Madame Couture’s Consignment Boutique for the third annual Fashion for Compassion fashion show, which took place in the Averitt Center’s Emma Kelly Theatre. The event raised around $1200 for Fostering Bulloch’s Georgia’s Princess Ball, which is projected to take place in May as a promtype event for teen girls in at-risk situations or foster care.

ALCOHOL UPDATE — Statesboro City Council kicked off the new year by issuing three warnings and two temporary alcohol license suspensions to local businesses in Statesboro on allegations of selling wine or beer to underage customers. Moving forward a TAD — City Council unanimously approved the map and redevelopment proposal for the Statesboro Tax Allocation District (TAD). With the location approved, the district can start capturing revenue growth from the city’s taxes to channel into a fund for community development. A link to the plan and map for the district can be found in this article on our website. Michael’s Law — The parents of Michael Joseph Gatto, the 18-year-old who died after a
violent encounter with a 20-yearold bouncer at Rude Rudy’s bar in Statesboro on Aug. 28, want Georgia’s laws changed to make places that sell alcoholic beverages more responsible. “Michael’s Law,” as his father, Michael S. Gatto, and mother, Kathy Lee Gatto, envision it, would require that every Georgia business licensed to sell alcohol maintain insurance, including specialized insurance for problems resulting from the use of alcohol, as well as general liability insurance. The legislation would also raise the minimum age for bartenders and bouncers from 18 to 21 and require training for bartenders, bouncers, servers and the business owners who employ them. The law has been brought before the Georgia General Assembly, which convened Monday, Jan. 12. New eats — Statesboro said hello to two new food venues: Papa Murphy’s, a take-and-bake pizza place located at 582 Brannen Street which opened Thursday, Jan. 8; and The Mason Jar, a Southern buffet-style eatery which has moved in to the old Buns location and is tentatively scheduled to reopen Friday, Jan. 16. Doctor, don’t preach — After investigating a complaint, Georgia Southern University directed Dr. Emerson T. “Tom” McMullen, an associate professor of history, not to discuss his “religious beliefs or opinions under the guise of University courses.” McMullen came under investigation at the insistence of The Freedom From Religion Foundation and the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science, who had received allegations that McMullen brought a religious bias and agenda to his classes. A copy of the memo instructing McMullen to cease discussing his religious beliefs or opinions as part of class curriculum, including McMullen’s signature showing that he received the memo, can be found on our website.w

Small town, big act — Second City Comedy Club been on a roller coaster that only goes up ever since. It has nurtured comedians such as Stephen Colbert, Dan Akroyd, Martin Short, Tina Fey and Bill Murray — to name just a few — and brought the world the phenomenon of Saturday Night Live. With the This Hits Home show, Second City embarks on a venture into the hyperlocal as a comedic subject. According to Second City Theatricals producer Nate DuFort, it grew naturally out of the show’s usual modus operandi. “So much of what we do beyond just our sketch comedy is improvisation, and the suggestions that we use to prove that we are indeed improvising come from the audience. So, our folks, knowing that anything could come at any time from that audience, need to

"We wanted to take it a step farther, so we threw out the idea of This Hits Home show, and theatres and other communities started eating it up.” With a little research beforehand, DuFort said, the comedians in This Hits Home come to their shows ready for any local improv suggestions the audience can throw at them, delivering a highly personalized show that Statesboro natives can appreciate. The Second City has three com-
panies touring in the This Hits Home show, and on Friday, Statesboro will play host to the six comedians of the Green Co. Statesboro has had some luck lately with attracting national comedy acts with a local bent. It will be hard to top the improv artists of Broadway’s Next H!t Musical back in November — but the brains behind The Second City Comedy theatre may just have them beat. On Friday, Jan. 16, the Averitt Center will host The Second City Hits Home, a new show from The Second City that gets up close and personal with the towns it comes to visit. In addition to their sketches, the cast of The Second City Hits Home may tailor their improvisational bits around the quirks and eccentricities of the good people of Statesboro. The Second City Comedy Club started back in 1959 in Chicago and has

Q: I am constantly grinding my teeth. What can be done for during the day to prevent ruining my teeth further? A: There are many causes for grinding one’s teeth. It can be a nervous habit or be caused by malocclusion (teeth not meeting correctly). It can also be a side effect of certain anti-depressants. If you are taking anti-depressants, you might ask your physician if it’s possible to change to one that doesn’t have clenching or grinding as a side effect. It is also possible to have your dentist make a certain type of splint which can be worn during the day and is barely noticeable, which would limit your clenching/grinding. Discuss this problem with your dentist and see what solutions he recommends.

Probably the most anticipated Xbox One game this year, Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta was released by 343 Industries at the end of December. Being the staple game for the Xbox brand and the first widely successful Tim first-person-shooter (FPS) on a console, Halo's beta first impressions did not disappoint this gamer. Gamers who bought Halo: The Master Chief Collection have exclusive access to the Halo 5's multiplayer beta, which began Dec. 29 and runs through Jan. 18. The game is a follow-up to the successful Halo 4 game, which grossed $220 million on its launch day and $300 million in its opening week — a record for the franchise. Halo 4 was also the introduction of the new developers 343 Industries, who took over for Halo's former creators and developers Bungie. Like Halo: The Master Chief Collection launch, Halo 5 has not been a smooth transition when it comes to match-making. Trying to find a game sometimes takes a ridiculous amount of time and even sometimes disconnects altogether. On the launch day I spent more time trying to connect to a game than I did actually playing and matches. However, when I did connect with a game, I was treated to a new, entertaining Halo experience. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22– Jan. 19) — Let your accomplishments pave the way for new beginnings. Your actions will impress onlookers and help position you for bigger and better opportunities. Listen, learn and forge ahead. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20– Feb. 19) — Don't become overwhelmed by unfinished chores. If you organize and strategize, you will slowly but surely accomplish whatever you set out to do. PISCES (Feb. 20– March 20) — Be more assertive if you want to dictate the way situations unfold. You have all the qualities necessary to ably present and promote what you have to offer. ARIES (March 21–April 19) — Focus on love, romance and relationships. Business events or seminars will be the perfect place to meet someone who shares your interests and concerns. Let things unfold naturally. TAURUS (April 20–May 20) — Make an effort to get along with your peers. Sharing information will help you form an alliance with someone who can help you advance. GEMINI (May 21– June 20) — Emotions will run high, causing problems with overly sensitive people. A hobby or solitary pastime will keep you out of trouble. Stay calm and avoid senseless disputes that could lead to irreconcilable differences.
CANCER (June 21– July 22) — Pay greater attention to the ones you love. By making someone feel special, you will gain respect and personal stability. Your thoughtful and caring disposition will be appreciated and reciprocated. LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — Don't let a lack of confidence stop you from considering a new vocation or promising opportunity. Be proud of your accomplishments, but acknowledge what others do as well if you want to advance. VIRGO (Aug. 23– Sept. 22) — A friend will ask for your advice. Compromise and common sense will come in handy when interacting with business associates. You will be inspired to start a new project. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 23) — Remain alert in order to protect your possessions and property. Change up your routine so that your schedule or habits don't become too boring or predictable. SCORPIO (Oct. 24– Nov. 22) — Differences of opinion can quickly escalate into an argument. Stick to basics as well as to the truth, and resist the urge to blame or find fault in others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23– Dec. 21) — Don't let someone act on your behalf. Once you have decided what needs to be done, get on with the job. Constructive use of your time will leave room for recreation later.w

CAT BURGLAR — A Coaches Way woman reported a man she once dated came into her home and took a cat without permission. TOOTH FAIRY STRIKES? — A Stilson-Leefield Road woman was arrested after a man complained that she had been drinking and arguing with her boyfriend. The woman admitted the argument was her fault and said she was drunk and angry because she misplaced her teeth. She wasn’t arrested the first time deputies went to the house, but the second time, they responded because someone reported her boyfriend was
chasing the offender with a knife. Deputies found the couple's bedroom had been destroyed and torn apart. Deputies found the woman in the woods and then took her to jail for disorderly conduct. SCROOGE — A Gordion Beasley Road man admitted kicking a Christmas tree during an argument when deputies arrived at the scene. Reports did not say what the tree did to cause the man’s violence. STEALING LUBE — A man was arrested for shoplifting the following from Wal-Mart; bathroom tissue, duck pants, a buffer, motor oil, a brewer, dental rinse, body wash, toothpaste, KY jelly and other items.w
