My hometown, Hiram, is on the very edge of Atlanta's urban sprawl, the last suburb before you get to the sticks. I've been walking the line between city and country for a very long time. But here in Statesboro — where driving five minutes in any direction will get you lost in farmland — I've found myself in a very different, completely rural world. That's a long way of saying that, until Saturday evening, I had never been to a rodeo. I spent the second half of Saturday night's event with the folks at the Jim's Meat Sauce stand, watching the barrel riding and rodeo clowning, the calf-roping and bull-riding. I watched two different groups of people run around chasing baby cows so they could — and I kid you not (you were probably there anyway) — dress it up in pants, a tie and socks. SCOTT BRYANT/staff I saw clowns drop their pants and The feet of Justin McGriff, of Waycross, climb fences that did not look at Georgia, are the last things to let go during a all stable. I saw people who looked rough saddle bronc ride in the 2015 Statesboro like they were in their right minds willingly enter enclosed spaces with Kiwanis Rodeo at the Kiwanis Ogeechee large animals who had sharp horns, Fairgrounds Friday.

Be honest — you came here looking for stuff about Migos, didn't you?

Patience, grasshoppers. Here at Connect, I try to get all the facts before shooting an uninformed opinion out into the world. I have many thoughts about the Migos debacle at Georgia Southern, but I'm waiting until we get some more firmly established facts. Keep an eye on ConnectStatesboro.com, and stay tuned with our Facebook and Twitter feeds. We'll keep you updated on the story as it develops. And who knows — I might chime in with a thought or two as well. Stay tuned!

Q: What should I expect during my first appointment? A: You will participate in a face-to-face interview with a state certified clinical evaluator. The evaluation will last approximately one hour. You are expected to pay at the time of your service. Have no fear. We gather information from you to determine if you have needs to be addressed - substance abuse, mental health issues, medical issues, financial, legal, social, etc. We, then, make recommendations and referrals based on your self report. Clinical evaluations are for those convicted of a DUI. Second offenders must bring a 7 year motor vehicle report from DDS. All clinical evaluation appointments occur after completion of the DUI Risk Reduction Program. Contact Vern or anyone at Bulloch Recovery Resources for an appointment. We have five evaluators on the DBHDD approved registry.

'Sunny Side Up' takes home the big win Biggest Statesboro Film Festival yet ends on a high — and optimistic — note for Best Film winners children, when one of the boys is accidentally killed by another with a stone. The film that won Best Cinematography was "He Who Laughs," a short story about a young student who works as costume designer for a play. She is followed home by a creepy clown, and the end of the film takes an odd twist as other strange clowns are found at her apartment. The film was by Richard Patrick, Madison Reynolds, Tahir Daudier and Brandon Warnock. The film "Find Me," by Beeka Regassa, won the category of Best Director. In it, a flirty young lady catches a ride with a strange man, hinting at making the ride "worth his while," and after flashbacks that gives viewers the idea he is a rapist who preys upon runaways and vulnerable young women, she shoots him. Other films nominated for Best Director were "He Who Laughs," "Sunny Side Up" and "Intimate Encounters," a film about a girl who gets paid for cuddling but is almost raped by a client who thinks she is a prostitute. The film was by Michael Houston and James Harper. "Find Me" also won the Best Editing category. Also nominated for Best Editing were "He Who Laughs," "The Job," "Sunny Side Up" and "Partners," a film by Jake McCallum about a tragic end to the first drug bust attempt by two rookie cops. Other films nominated for Best Film were "He Who Laughs," "Find Me" and "The Job," a film by Todd Helms about two men who go for a job interview that ends in an odd twist. A film about a man whose life is marred by memories of past tragedies was named Best Film Friday night at the 2015 Statesboro Film Festival, held at the Emma Kelly Theater in downtown Statesboro. "Sunny Side Up," by Joe Guglielmetti and Yashar Alamdari, follows an older man whose clarity is obviously muddied as he lets mail build up in his mailbox, forgets he is cooking breakfast and is more worried about the day's date than his safety as he is being robbed at gunpoint. The film drops hints that his wife had recently died and that he had a daughter who spent time in a hospital when she was young, and the man is often confused by the muddled memories. In one flashback, he makes his daughter smile as he rearranges her hospital breakfast to make a smiley face out of bacon and eggs. The memory causes him to change his daily routine café order of scrambled eggs and pancakes to bacon and eggs "sunny side up." This film also won the Viewer's Choice category, receiving the most online votes from people who chose it as their favorite out of the films submitted. Statesboro Herald operations manager and editor Jim Healy opened the annual event, hosted by the Herald and sponsored by several local businesses. "We appreciate the filmmakers who took the time to do this and for putting yourselves out there," he said when welcoming guests and filmmakers. There were 11 films entered for competition, with one shown that was ineligible for awards due to exceeding length limitations. That film, "Bridges in Beaugarde," by Robinson Vil, was shown anyway at the filmmaker's request. In it, a biracial girl comes under attack by several juvenile

Old-fashioned fun with '1940s Radio Comedy' Before there was Netflix, Hulu and Spotify, people would crowd around the radio to listen to their favorite shows. At East Georgia State College, audiences are invited to take a trip into the past and experience a live radio show in “The 1940's Radio Comedy Hour: The Verdis Variety Cavalcade.” A n d according to cast members, it’s the real deal. “The audience can expect to see an authentic old-time radio show, complete with old vaudeville

comedy routines, sketches and commercials including sound effects — just like they would experience if they were in the audience of a real radio program,” said Andrea Verdis, a member of the cast and costume designer. “You get a real appreciation concerning what radio comedy was like in the 1940s,” Jeff Howell, an actor in the show, said. “Many of the skits come right out of the 1940s radio genre. We try to recreate what the experience was like for the listener during radio’s heyday. explained Sebastian Verdis, the director of the show, adding that the show is hilarious.

This isn’t Verdis’ first time directing the show; he’s been doing it for almost 20 years. "Its longest run was as the ‘1940's Radio Show: The Verdis Variety Cavalcade’ that was last performed in Savannah at the Savannah Arts Academy as a fundraiser for the SAA Theatre Department's trip to Scotland. You could say that this is an international show, since it toured China for two weeks with six performances from Chengdu to Beijing, he said. Andrea Verdis said that the cast has really dug into their roles. By the looks of things, there’s been a real attention to detail. “We have done our best to give the audience a great evening of entertainment. I know they will have a memorable experience, so we invite everyone who needs a few laughs to join us,” Andrea said. “The 1940's Radio Comedy Hour: The Verdis Variety Cavalcade” will run for two shows from April 30 to May 1. The show begins at 8 p.m. and will take place at East Georgia State College, room 104 in the H Building. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.w

Bloodier is better with 'Mortal Kombat X'

Eagles sweep Trojans under the rug Georgia Southern hit the road over the weekend and took care of business against Arkansas-Little Rock with a much-needed three-game sweep. In game one Friday night, the Eagles fell behind early thanks to some sloppy defense in the second inning. Alex Arkansas-Little Rock scored five runs, all unearned, in the bottom of the second. Southern committed two errors and had a wild pitch in the inning. The Trojans would tack on one

insurance run in the third to stretch the lead to 6-1, but Southern rallied for three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth, four in the eighth and one more in the ninth to come from behind and win 10-8. Evan Challenger started the game for the Eagles, but Brown only pitched three innings. Jason Richman came on and pitched his tail off to give his offense a chance. Richman went 4-1/3 innings and gave up a run on five hits before giving way to Chris Brown to slam the door

transactions it kind of makes the game a bit of a laughingstock. Players can skip the single-player story and/or tower fights with real world currency. And if that isn't a mockery enough, gamers can even pay for executing easy, two-button Fatalities if they like. Although the micro-transactions kind of turned my stomach as much as the bloody Fatalities, Mortal Kombat X is still the best in the series. It has the best fighting mechanics to-date, impressive visuals, variations to add a ton of depth and a story that all fans will accept and enjoy. and earn the save. Aaron Mizell, Chase Griffin and Ryan Cleveland all homered for the Eagles in the win. Georgia Southern fell behind early once again on Saturday as UALR scored three runs in the bottom of the first. The Eagles would rally to score one run in each inning from the fifth through eighth and the game would go to extra innings tied at four. Southern scored in the top of the tenth and held on to win 5-4. The Eagles used seven pitchers, but Richman would get his second win of the weekend after recording the final two outs of the ninth inning and Brown got another save after closing the door in the bottom of the tenth. The Eagles decided to switch up the strategy on Sunday and jump out to an early lead. Southern scored one in the top of the first and three more in the third to take a 4-0 lead. The Trojans countered with a run in the bottom of the third, but Southern tacked on one in the top of the sixth and hung a fivespot in the seventh to cruise to a 10-3

win and a series sweep. Georgia Southern (14-7) remains in second place in the conference behind Georgia State (13-3). South Alabama, UL Lafayette and Troy are all tied with the Eagles in the loss column, but have played fewer games. Southern hosts former SoCon rival College of Charleston on Tuesday before welcoming UL Monroe (19-19, 6-11) in for a three-game set over the weekend. After this weekend’s series, Southern only has two in-conference weekends left on the schedule: South Alabama (May 1-3) and Georgia State (May 14-16). This is the time of year to catch fire and start a run into the conference tournament. If the Eagles start clicking, this team can be dangerous. But they have to finish the regular season strong so they can go into the tournament playing well. The weather is warming up and hopefully, so are the Eagles. It should be a good weekend at J.I. Clements Stadium.w

Silversel: Raised on rock Silversel is taking a break in Statesboro for a few weeks after releasing a music video for the chart topping song, “Icarus,” and just before heading out on tour. The rock group consists of Wally Silver on lead vocals, Ricky Saldano on drums, Justin Myers on lead guitar, David Newman on rhythm guitar and George Adkins bass. All the boys call either Statesboro or Millen home, and all are amped up from the release of their second studio album, Battlegrounds. Saldano, who is endorsed by B-Stick, says that their first album Where Angels Dare “is really soft compared

to our new album.” Silversel released Where Angels Dare in 2013, earning them a place on the shortlist in four different categories for the 56th Annual Grammy Awards. They released Battlegrounds in 2014, after spending time in Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and at Elevated Basement Studio in Savannah. Frontman Wally Silver says that the sound engineer, Shane Baldwin, “pushed each one of us to our limit, and then over a little bit.” Their hard work paid off: two different songs from Battlegrounds hit five different CMJ (College Media Journal) national music

'Boro's own takes top prize at CMA ARLINGTON, Texas — Miranda Lambert won four awards, including album and song of the year, but the singer lost the night's top prize to Luke Bryan at Sunday's Academy of Country Music Awards. It was a repeat of the Country Music Association Awards in November, where Lambert won multiple prizes but lost the big

award to Bryan. "Listen guys, what an amazing night of music," an excited Bryan said onstage after winning the fanvoted award. "Thank you to my wife, my kids ... my fans, country radio." Luke Bryan took home his second entertainer of the year award — but the singer says he's not jaded about winning.

Silversel is a locally based, self-described "hard rock" band rising to make a name for themselves, with two songs from their album landing on five different CMJ national music charts. charts, including the Top 50 Adult Contemporary and the Top 50 Independent Artist charts. As of February 2015, Silversel released the “Icarus” music video and signed with Star Pro Records of Viacom. The band is now an official MTV Artist. Whereas Where Angels Dare was written in a mismatched format — with Wally Silver attaching lyrics to music already written, and vice versa — Battlegrounds is a much more collaborative effort. Every member of the band was involved in the songwriting for each track. Battlegrounds has a darker and harder tone than the previous album, which the band hopes to

develop into an even heavier sound on their prospective third album. Though Silversel has struggled describing their genre, eventually they settled on saying their music fell into the “hard rock” category. Silversel is a group that loves to play their instruments and loves exhausting themselves for their audience — which they affectionately call their “Selmates.” The Unleashed 2015 Tour and the Battlegrounds album tour started this month with over 27 dates booked. "When I'm an old guy rocking in a rock chair, I'm going to go, 'You had a doggone good time.' And that's my approach." Bryan first won the honor in 2013. He won the entertainer of the year award at the Country Music Association Awards in November. The Associated Press British playwright Tom Stoppard is to accept the PEN/ Allen Foundation Literary Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American chapter of the global humanrights organization of writers and editors. ASSOCIATED PRESS

Stoppard: A "frightening time" for free speech NEW YORK — Playwright Tom Stoppard said he will accept PEN's highest award next month in New York to help put a spotlight on a "frightening time" for free expression. Stoppard is to accept the PEN/Allen Foundation Literary Service Award, the highest honor bestowed by the American chapter of the global humanrights organization of writers and editors. Charlie Hebdo, the Parisian satirical magazine that was a target of a deadly shooting in January, also will be honored. Staff member Jean-Baptiste Thoret, who barely escaped the attack that killed eight of his co-workers and four others, will receive the PEN/Toni and James C. Goodale Freedom of Expression Courage Award. Stoppard, who has campaigned for oppressed artists and political dissidents in Eastern and Central Europe, said threats to free speech are worse now than ever, from radical Islam to U.S. government surveillance. "The problem is deeper and, really, much more complicated. I think it's quite a frightening time," said the playwright, who scripted the Oscar-winning film "Shakespeare in Love" and has written plays including "Arcadia" and "The Real Thing." "You kind of stand there in your Western idea of what morality is and what amorality is and suddenly you're not quite sure. You thought you'd

always known what was which and suddenly, you're not sure. This is the fate of thoughtful people as the century unfolds." In addition to the Paris attack, PEN Executive Director Suzanne Nossel pointed to other moves against writers, including a gunman who opened fire on a Copenhagen cultural center in March and a South African novelist confined for comments she made in appreciation of Salman Rushdie. "It is a climate of hair-trigger sensitivity to certain kinds of speech and a very dangerous moment for writers who are seated in the crosshairs," said Nossel. "It is a tough moment on many fronts." Stoppard said he and fellow artists have lately found it difficult to tread the line between a desire for absolute right of free expression and the hope of being respectful to those with different beliefs and creeds. "The Charlie Hebdo massacre was an appalling body shock to anybody who cares about life, let along literature. You are left thinking, 'Well, if it comes to making a choice here, clearly one has to choose that one should be allowed and entitled to offend without being murdered for it,'" he said. "That seems self-evident. That doesn't mean that one is in harmony with the attitude or the particular instances of what is being said and written and drawn."w

TAURUS (April 20– May 20) — Look for an artistic outlet. Home decorating or renovations will turn out well, as long as you stick to a strict budget. Don't make decisions for others, or you will face opposition. GEMINI (May 21– June 20) — Your emotional state will discourage personal discussions with others. You would be best off delving into expressive hobbies. Quietly doing something you enjoy will help calm your nerves. CANCER (June 21– July 22) — Don't make important decisions. Confusion and uncertainty will prevail, making it difficult to do the right thing. Exposing too much personal information will put you in a vulnerable position. LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — A new friendship will blossom. You have a lot to offer, but it's important not to provoke the jealousy of someone close to you. VIRGO (Aug. 23–Sept. 22) — Focus on a way to increase your income. Delve into work and money matters so that you have a perfect sense of where you sit financially. You have what it takes to advance. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 23) — Don't allow the actions or words of others to have a negative effect on you. Relatives or co-workers will be hard to get along with. You are best off working alone.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24– Nov. 22) — Personal matters will require your undivided attention. You will need to take on extra responsibilities, so be prepared to step up and do what's necessary. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23– Dec. 21) — Moderation is key. You can make financial gains, but only if you are logical, not emotional. Someone else's plan will not be in your best interests. Do your research before signing a contract. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22– Jan. 19) — You have the energy and self-control to finish what you start. Leave yourself some time at the end of the day to enjoy pleasant recreation or to spend time with someone you love. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20– Feb. 19) — Don't get caught up in day-to-day routines that could cloud your vision and aspirations. If you dedicate time to something you feel passionate about, success will follow. PISCES (Feb. 20– March 20) — You are kind and dependable, but that doesn't mean you should let anyone take you for granted. Doing things for others is commendable, as long as you take care of your needs as well. ARIES (March 21– April 19) — A short excursion will be eye opening. Bring some laughter into your life by getting together with friends or by doing something out of the ordinary.w

Holli Deal Saxon MUNCHIES — Whoever burglarized a residence at Renaissance Apartments last week must have had the munchies and a need to redecorate. They stole eight bags of assorted chips, three boxes of Capri Sun drink, bags of Kit Kat, Reeses and Snickers candies as well as a box springs and a mattress, circular mirrors, a shower curtain and bath matt, and a comforter set. FRIENDLY FEUD — Officers were called to

Bigshows Burgers and Bar, where there was a fight reported between friends. Both men stated they did not wish to press charges. DRUNK AND HANGRY — A Princess Lane woman reported she and her boyfriend argued because she would not take him to get something to eat. He was intoxicated, so she tried to keep him from leaving and he hit her in the mouth, she said.w
