See the world, no passport required 9th Annual International Festival to take place Nov. 15 in Mill Creek Park Not everyone can be an “international man of mystery.” Believe it or not, there are people whose feet never leave American soil. Georgia Southern’s Center for International Studies is offering an opportunity for people in the city of Statesboro and beyond to see the world all in one place. This offering is through the GSU International Festival, a day of music, food, and presentations of cultures from around the world in the center of Mill Creek Park. Angie Threatte, Coordinator of International Programming and Events for the GSU Center for International Studies, is the organizer of the ninth annual event and she explained there are many hands needed to begin to present this festival.

“There is a lot of work to do preparing every part of the festival,” she said. “Everything could not be completed without the help of the center, the student employees and volunteers participating.” It is the job of these student employees to prepare various local schools from inside and outside of Bulloch County for what is called the Global Village, an area where middle and high schools present food, clothing and history from a specified country. There are 11 schools participating this year, which is more than previous years. Even Jeff Davis Middle School from Hazlehurst — over an hour away — will be coming into Statesboro to participate for the very first time, representing Nigeria and Saudi Arabia. Another favorite featured at each

festival is the World Stage, which brings music and performances from international dance troupes who bring their style and culture to the stage for all to enjoy. According to Threatte, they will bring in some yearly favorites and incorporate some new performers into this year’s show. One of those acts is the Magical Fires of Polynesia, featuring Polynesian dancers in traditional attire (grass skirts, festive headdresses) and fire dancing. Festival-goers also enjoy the belly dancers — who, Threatte joked, entertained more than just the teenage boys. There will also be international vendors with food, clothing, accessories and jewelry available for purchase. According to Angie Threatte, the event grows each year. Every year they

aim for 10 or more schools to participate in the Global Village as well as 100 or more volunteers. The ultimate goal is to bring international culture to Statesboro in hopes of inspiring kids to travel the world or study abroad. Threatte described a group of children she witnessed, eyes wide as saucers watching a group perform in traditional Japanese kimonos, to demonstrate the enthusiastic response the festival gets from visitors. It is this expression of curiosity and excitement that she hopes to inspire with the festival each year. The GSU International Festival will be held on Nov. 15 from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at Mill Creek Regional Park. Eagles need to tighten up to beat Navy That sound you heard Saturday evening was the entire Eagle Nation breathing a huge sigh of relief after holding its collective breath in the final minutes of Georgia Southern’s 28-25 win at Texas State. The Eagles appeared to be in control for most of the game, Alex but it almost slipped away in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats outscored Southern 15-0 in the final frame to fall three points shy of completing the comeback. Texas State’s defense put together one heck of a game as Georgia Southern’s offense was held to its lowest output of the season in several categories. The Eagles only managed nine first downs and 268 total yards and the offense only put up 21 points. Southern’s defense could not seem to get off the field as the Bobcats ran 97 offensive plays for 439 total yards and 26 first downs. Texas State won the time of possession battle, was penalized just four times, had 33 fewer penalty yards than Southern and outgained the Eagles by

almost 200 yards on offense. Yet Georgia Southern found a way to win this game — on the road, no less. The turning point came on the last two plays of the third quarter as the Bobcats faced third and goal from inside the Eagle 10-yard line. Quarterback Brown Tyler Jones hit his receiver in the flats and Matt Dobson came up from his safety position to make a touchdownsaving, open-field tackle at the one-yard line. On the next play, Dobson came up huge once again as he picked off Jones’ fourth-and-goal pass in the endzone and ran it back over 100 yards for his second pick-six of the year and the Eagles were up 28-10. I guess you can say those two plays made up for Dobson’s personal foul on a third down and forever play that extended a Bobcat drive, which resulted in a touchdown and began their comeback attempt. Tattler Game Ball: Let’s give it to Matt Breida. In an otherwise poor performance by the offense (by this

'Big Hero 6' is adorable but formulaic Don't be thrown by the title. Disney's Big Hero 6 isn't the latest installment of a celebrated franchise you never heard of until now. Though judging by its ending, the filmmakers definitely have franchise-level aspirations. Big Hero 6 is actually a reference to the six members of a group of brandnew animated superheroes — kind of a nerdy, college-aged version of

"The Incredibles," with a heavy Asian influence. Strangely, the film's greatest strength — its originality — gets flipped 180 degrees by the end of the film. He broke a 43-yard touchdown run up the middle in the third quarter to give the Eagles some breathing room in what ended up being a very close game. This guy is just lightning in a bottle — it seems like every time he touches the ball, something exciting happens. Good teams find ways to win games in which they are not at their best. Saturday’s win wasn’t pretty, but Southern found a way to hold on. And give credit to Texas State — that’s a pretty good football team and a very solid defense. The Eagles improve to 8-2 on the season and have won seven straight games. This weekend, Georgia Southern steps out of conference play to travel to Navy. Last time the Eagles made the trip to Annapolis, the Midshipmen won a 13-7 defensive battle in Jeff Monken’s second game as head coach at Southern. Navy is 4-5 on the season and is coming off a bye week after losing to Notre Dame in a wild 49-39 affair at

FedEx Field. Navy is the official FBS leader in rushing offense with 350.4 yards per game, but they only lead because Georgia Southern is not eligible for that title as a transitional program. The Eagles average 386.5 yards per game on the ground. Southern is going to need to play better than it did against Texas State to win this one. If you’re looking for a point of reference, Navy actually beat the Bobcats in San Marcos 35-21 early in the season. The extra week to prepare will help Navy and hopefully, not playing very well last week will motivate the Eagles this week in practice. Navy can move the ball and score plenty of points as they average 31.8 per game. They may be below .500 on the season, but this will be no easy task for Georgia Southern. Tattler Prediction: Not much passing. Went out on a limb there, didn’t I? This one will be tough, but Georgia Southern will have superior team speed and athleticism which will help the Eagles win a close one. Eagles 33, Midshipmen 31w

together — the film defaults into an all-too-common superhero formula: Brand-new Hero(es) + Obligatory Bad Guy = Arbitrary Third Act Battle. If you feel like you've seen it before, it's because you have — many, many, times. But zoning out during the more routine elements might make some other things more obvious, namely the film's effort to apply a heavy Asian design influence throughout. Big Hero 6 appears to be set in San Francisco, but upon further review, the location is actually dubbed "San Fransokyo," complete with Asian design riffs applied to familiar visuals such as the Golden Gate Bridge. The characters themselves carry a subtle anime vibe as well. While there's no denying the

visual appeal, the reasoning behind the effort is never explained. San Francisco already has a fairly substantial Asian influence, and it isn’t clear why the filmmakers decided to exaggerate it. Did the animators just think it would look cool? Is this supposed to be some Star Trek-style city of the future where lines of nationality have become blurred beyond recognition? Is Disney just pandering to its international market? Of course, the target audience for “Big Hero 6” probably won’t notice any of the film’s subtext, and they probably won’t be bothered by the standard hero formula either. Big Hero 6 is still a fun, family-friendly option for a variety of filmgoers, but sadly, its strong opening suggests the finished product could have been better.w

HAVE A BITE — Police responded recently to Cambridge at Southern, where a woman and her girlfriend argued and ended up in a physical fight. Reports stated they each bit the other. WHO DUNNIT? — A man was injured late one night at Knight’s Inn, suffering a head injury requiring medical attention. He told police he did not know what happened to him. EX MARKS THE SPOT — by dumping bleach on a woman’s clothes and shoes. A Park Place woman told police she suspected her ex-boyfriend of damaging her stuff but no one was arrested in connection

to the damage. LITTLE BLUE PILL — A girl found a small blue pill on a school bus and handed it to another student, who bit into it and spit it out. Bulloch County EMS met the school bus on Old River Road and checked the child, whom the bus driver was concerned may have had a reaction to the unknown pill. The girl was taken to the hospital for follow-up. COPPER BEECH TOWNHOUSES — Just after midnight Thursday a man reported seeing another man in a hoodie, using a flashlight to look into an apartment through a window. The suspect fled when seen.w
