Johnny Henricks and Robbie Lawler will face off again in a Dec. 6 matchup you won't want to miss.
Hendricks, Lawler gear up for Round 2 Due to Connect's publishing hiatus in December, this will be the last Punch Line of 2014. Keep an eye out for more columns starting in January! On Dec. 6, Johnny “Big Rig” Hendricks will defend Brett his title for the first time against “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler. After Georges St. Pierre vacated the title, these two fought to unify the title for a new welterweight champion. Hendricks, with a broken hand, succeeded and pulled out a victory to become the new champion at 170 pounds. The UFC matchmakers must have thought the match was close enough to make a rematch, so here we go again for round two. I will say that I’m excited to see both of these fighters go at it at 100 percent, though I believe Hendricks
will pull out the victory again. Don’t miss this card — with other fighters like Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, Travis Browne and Abel Trujillo on the card as well, it is sure to be a great one! Coming up in the new year, the UFC has laid out an Law exciting string of events from January to February with huge stars like Ronda Rousey, Jon Jones, Conor McGregor and the return of Nick Diaz and Anderson Silva. With stars like these on the upcoming cards in January, we’re looking to have a great beginning to the new year in UFC. So stay tuned! 'Thank God it's them instead of you' There has been a lot of comthe one sung by Bono (twice): mentary online about the lyrical "Thank God it's them instead of updates to the song "Do They you." at The Independent wrote that the lyric “repeats a stance that the West too often takes when looking fearfully across the oceans at tragedies unfolding abroad.” It gets misread because, as a very satirical line, it doesn't exactly fit in a satirical song. It brings to mind certain passages of Charles Dickens' writing, as he brushes over pathetic scenes of the London poor to draw furious attention to similar contemporary attitudes in his readers. It's a theme that runs strongly through his novel Bleak House, and it is accompanied by a grim portent of mutually assured destruction. Let me explain: Dickens wrote a scene in which an aristocrat contracts a nasty disease circulating through London's homeless population. He catches it not through direct contact with a victim — because, as an aristocrat, he could distance himself from the lower circles of the city — but because his coat had come from a sweatshop staffed by the homeless people he actively avoided and neglected to help. Dickens believed that the health of society depended on the health of the groups and individuals that made up the whole. It's a view that Martin Luther King Jr. shared and discusses in his "Letter from a Birmingham Jail": "We are caught in an inescapable network
of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly." Hooten was completely accurate in his interpretation of the Band Aid line. I know that in my family at least, our Thanksgiving prayer includes gratitude for our health and physical and economic security — blessings that come in large part because we live in the U.S. and which can't even be applied to everyone here. Of course we should be grateful for our blessings. We should not, however, allow that gratitude and comfort to continue in inaction. There are ways to help that are respectful and dignified for giver and recipient alike without having to stoop to the level of the Band Aid song, however well-intentioned it is. And as the recent Ebola scare and the continuing crisis reminds us, the health of one demographic may very well influence the health of the larger whole. Not that our humanitarian impulses should be driven by a sense of selfpreservation, but if we want to keep the blessings we have, we need to make sure other people get to share them. Tuesday Q: Is a clinical evaluation the same as an alcohol/
drug evaluation? Is an alcohol/drug evaluation the same as an alcohol/drug assessment?
A:
Evaluations and assessments are usually interchangeable terms; however, clinical evaluations are mandatory by DBHDD for all first and subsequent DUI offenders. Both alcohol and drug assessments and clinical evaluations require a face-to-face interview with a clinician. DUI offenders can only be evaluated and/or treated by clinicians on the DBHDD state registry.

GSU professor facing "preaching" complaints Georgia Southern University officials are investigating a complaint that Dr. Tom McMullen crosses the line to preaching in his history classes. McMullen, a tenured associate professor in the history department, has taught at Georgia Southern for almost 24 years. He teaches upper-level courses, including "The Scientific Revolution" and "Science and Religion," as well as general history classes. In an Oct. 22 letter to GSU President Dr. Brooks Keel, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science noted that McMullen's courses include some in the honors program. "However, it is our information that McMullen uses class time to proselytize students and advance his personal religion, Christianity," the groups stated in the letter. It was signed by Freedom From Religion Foundation co-presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor and Dr. Richard Dawkins, the evolutionary biologist famous for his advocacy of atheism and criticism of creationism. The advocacy groups acknowledged that McMullen, particularly as a historian with a focus on science, could legitimately talk to students about the development of scientific ideas. "He could even legitimately discuss religious doctrines masquerading as science, such as young earth creationism and intelligent design," the letter stated. "However, it appears that McMullen does not present these as religious ideas lacking scientific merit. Instead, McMullen presents these religious beliefs as scientific fact." Filling seven pages, the letter cites anonymous student testimonials from the website RateMyProfessor.com. The advocacy groups stated that McMullen gives extra credit to students for writing about his personal religious beliefs. The Freedom From Religion Foundation's involvement began with a single student complaint, but this was backed up by input from a few other students and by online research, foundation staff attorney Andrew Seidel said in a
phone interview. Last semester, in fact, McMullen offered an extra credit assignment that involved seeing the movie God's Not Dead. The advocacy groups' letter calls this film "an argument for converting to Christianity and loathing atheists in movie form." The letter also cites model answers to essay questions from an exam study guide McMullen gave students. For the essay topic "Discuss the pros and cons of Darwin's idea of evolution (descent, by modification and natural selection, from a common ancestor to man, complex species)," the model answer gave only two lines of "pros" but 11 lines of "cons." Among the cons, the model answer asserted that there is evidence that the earliest animals were very diverse, that extinction, but not evolution, is seen today, and that "the implications of evolution's naturalism also undercut Judeo-Christian morality, replacing it with notions like ‘might makes right' and that the ‘unfit' do not deserve to survive." The Freedom From Religion and Richard Dawkins foundations had Dr. Jerry Coyne, another evolutionary biologist known for his criticisms of creationism and arguments from intelligent design, review these materials. The letter quotes Coyne as saying, "virtually everything [McMullen] says about evolution is dead wrong. He's teaching lies to students and pushing a religious viewpoint." McMullen's stance "I don't try to convert anybody," McMullen said in an interview. "In some of my classes, like for instance, World History I, we're doing Jainism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and then Christianity, and then later Islam, and also, I might add Zoroastrianism, Manichaeism." However, he makes no secret of his own Christian beliefs, tracing his conversion to a time when he worked among scientists in government labs. His criticisms of some prevailing scientific theories, he acknowledges, are

Georgia Southern University Associate Professor Dr. Emerson T. "Tom" McMullen holds a copy of the New Testament, distributed to soldiers during World War I, which included a message from President Woodrow Wilson expressing Christian faith. McMullen considers religious and scientific currents vital to teaching history, but two organizations complain that he goes too far in emphasizing his own views. also well-known. McMullen's website, found through a link from the GSU History Department staff and faculty page, includes talks he has given, and opinion letters and monographs he has written over the years with titles such as "The Fish-Land Fossil Fraud," "The Biblical Basis of Modern Science" and "Introductory Scientific and Biblical Arguments for a Young Earth." His homepage has the Georgia Southern University banner at the top, but a disclaimer at the bottom states that the content of such pages is not sanctioned by the university and does not represent its opinions. McMullen argues that the Big Bang theory of the universe's origins departs from the cause-and-effect basis of science by offering no cause for the origin event. He rejects evolution, at least when it means descent of all species from a single starting point. "I don't buy that we descended from a common ancestor," McMullen told the Statesboro Herald. "I don't accept that as a scientist. I was an agnostic, thought science had the answers and, investigating science, I realized science didn't
have all of the answers, including descent from a common ancestor, and then came to believe in God." McMullen's doctorate is in the history and philosophy of science. One of his two civilian master's degrees is a Master of Science, and his bachelor's degree was in chemical engineering. He served 20 years in the Air Force and retired as a major. Military history is another of his specialties. He also sometimes teaches a class on the history of flight. In discussing the role of science in history, McMullen talks about a number of scientists and philosophers whose views have been controversial, he noted, listing examples. "So we cover a lot of topics that could be interpreted as me preaching in the classroom. I don't preach creationism," McMullen said. "Basically, we've got across-the-board, broad-brush charges by the Freedom From Religion Foundation and Dawkins' Foundation." The extra credit assignment involving God's Not Dead was to write about one particular scene, in which a professor and a student debate whether God

RELIGION, from page 8 exists, McMullen said. With two classes given this option, he said, about half the students wrote about the movie, and all who did so received full extra credit. He said he also offered another extra credit option but no students asked for it. This semester, McMullen gave students an extra-credit choice of writing about a talk he gave on John F. Darly Jr., a local man who served as a World War II medic on D-Day in Europe and was later killed in action on Iwo Jima. The alternative was to write about McMullen's paper "No Evidence for Evolution: Scientists' Research and Darwinism." The majority of students who took the extra credit, he said, chose to write about the Darly talk, which he also made available online.
This is a huge, huge game for Georgia Southern. Honestly, outside of a few very good excuses (like, life-changingevent type excuses), I can’t think of a reason why anyone within reasonable driving distance who claims to be an Eagle fan wouldn’t be at Brown Paulson Stadium Saturday night. UL-Monroe (4-7, 3-4) comes to town looking for its second straight win after dropping six straight games. The Warhawks opened their season with a 17-10 win over Wake Forest and won three of their first four ballgames before going ice cold. However, of their seven losses, three have come to SEC teams — LSU, Kentucky and Texas A&M. And Monroe gave the Aggies all they wanted before eventually falling 21-16. Their record may not show it, but this is not a team to take lightly. Last week, the Warhawks beat New Mexico State on the road by a score of 30-17 and are looking to end their season on a high note against Georgia Southern. UL-Monroe has played at LSU, Texas A&M, Appalachian State and Arkansas State already this season, so they are used to playing on the road in tough
V.
Nov. 29, 6 p.m. environments. Granted, they lost all of those games, so maybe that’s good news for the Eagles. Georgia Southern hasn’t looked quite as crisp over the last few weeks as it did earlier in the season. Hopefully the week off helped the Eagles get healthy and refocus on what will, in all likelihood, be their last game of the season. Tattler Prediction: UL-Monroe will give Southern its toughest home test of the year, but the Eagles pull out a close one. Eagles 35, Warhawks 27 On the hardwood, the Georgia Southern men had a tune-up week last week against Trinity College and something called a Johnson University. In case you were wondering — and I know you were — both of those schools are located in Florida. The Eagles beat Trinity 86-49, but honestly looked pretty sloppy in doing so. Southern turned the ball over 18 times, but most of those were the result of trying to fill up the highlight reel. The

McMullen confirmed that the model essay answer with the 11 lines of cons and two lines of pros for evolution was his. In every case, he said, students can disagree with him without being penalized. "They can. I don't mark them down or anything like that," McMullen said. "They can disagree. That's what the whole thing about academia is, you know, that there's a freedom of thought to examine different issues."
The investigation But the Freedom From Religion and Richard Dawkins foundations alleged that, crossing the line from teaching to preaching, McMullen "has created serious constitutional problems" and hurts the university's reputation. The groups cited decisions in which courts ruled that teachers and professors must keep their personal religious views out of public classrooms. They asked the university to investigate thoroughly. game itself was never in question and the guys were having a little fun, so I guess we’ll let that slide. Plus, they cleaned it up in a 97-41 rout of Johnson University four days later. The Eagles committed just six turnovers, out-rebounded the Suns 62-30, and had six players score in doublefigures in the 56-point win. Southern hosted Florida International Monday night, but we’ll have to cover that one next week due to deadlines. On the women’s side, the Eagles picked up a nice 78-65 win over Jacksonville University Tuesday night, but fell to Kennesaw State on Saturday. The Eagles travel to Georgia Tuesday and then play as part of a basketball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Hanner. Saturday will be a busy day on campus: Women’s basketball plays at noon, men’s basketball takes the court at 2:30 p.m., and football kicks off at 6 p.m. Happy Thanksgiving, Eagle Nation! See you Saturday!w
Legal Affairs Maura Copeland, in an Oct. 30 letter to Barker and Gaylor, said that the university is doing just that, and "will take appropriate followup action" based on the results of its investigation. McMullen said university officials have his evaluations for perhaps the past five years and the syllabuses for all his courses. He has submitted his tests and extra-credit offerings for the past two years to the investigating officials, he said. "As a public university, Georgia Southern is well aware of its great responsibility to abide by all provisions of the Constitution of the United States of America, including the freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment," Copeland wrote in her letter. Georgia Southern was picked to finish near the bottom in just about every preseason Sun Belt poll. On Saturday, without setting foot on the field, the Eagles clinched at least a share of the conference championship. That wasn’t the only history Alex that was made this weekend. For the first time I can ever remember, I watched Appalachian State play football and, well, I just can’t bring myself to say I cheered for the Mountaineers — so we’ll just stick with saying I wanted UL Lafayette to lose to the team they were playing. Thanks to App State’s win at Lafayette, Georgia Southern is the only undefeated team left in conference play and is guaranteed at least a share of the Sun Belt title. But to heck with sharing … there’s work left to be done. Let’s win this whole dadgum thing. The Eagles (8-3, 7-0) will play for the outright Sun Belt Conference championship Saturday night at Paulson Stadium. Southern will look to complete a perfect 8-0 season in conference play against UL-Monroe.

Come celebrate the annual lighting of the Christmas tree on Courthouse Square, watch the holiday parade and sample some of the best chili from all across the Southeast for only $1 as part
of this year’s Chili Cook-Off, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the e+Foundation at South Georgia Center for Cancer Care. For all those little ones, Santa and Mrs. Clause will be available for free photographs inside Santa’s workshop, housed in the Averitt Center for the Arts. Country music recording artist Jared Wade will also be on hand providing holiday jingles for all who gather around. Downtown restaurants and shops will stay open late for your enjoyment, and local vendors offering quality food and handcrafted merchandise will be on the scene as well. All the fun kicks off at 5:30 p.m., and parking and admission are free to the general public. We look forward to seeing you there!w
Eugenia Last GEMINI (May 21– June 20) — You will gain plenty of inspiration if you are around optimistic and enthusiastic individuals. Arguing could end in emotional, physical or financial loss. CANCER (June 21–July 22) — Make your home your sanctuary. Redecorating or making minor renovations can add value to your property and impart a sense of well-being to you and your loved ones. LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — Finish off odd jobs you have been postponing. You will have more time to spend with friends and family once your to-do list is complete. Take charge in order to make a lasting impression. VIRGO (Aug. 23–Sept. 22) — Don't confine yourself to the same old routine. Make travel arrangements that will give you a chance to explore new cultures, different points of view or a unique lifestyle. LIBRA (Sept. 23–Oct. 23) — Find a way to keep busy away from home. Being in too close contact with certain people will lead to tension that you can do without. Focus on self-improvement, not what others do. SCORPIO (Oct. 24– Nov. 22) — Stand up for your rights. If someone tries to take credit for your work, make sure to set the record straight and get the acclaim you deserve.w

PURSE ARSON — Police responded to The Cove at Southern to find a woman’s purse and its contents burning in the parking lot. A wallet was found nearby, but police were unable to contact its owner. PERVERTED PHONE CALLS — An Ivanhoe Clubhouse Road (Brooklet) woman said a man called, asking whether
she had any wood for sale because he wanted to use it for sexual purposes, then asked if she had any animals he could use for sexual purposes. Five minutes later, the man called back, identified himself as a “deputy” from the “Statesboro Police Department” and wanted to know “how long before the order for the wood would be shipped out.” MAN IN BLACK — A Campus Crossings security guard reported to police he saw a man dressed in all black clothing use a slim-jim to try to enter a vehicle. When the security guard approached, the suspect fled.w

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23– Dec. 21) — If you pay close attention, you will learn valuable information from one of your peers. Consider the motives of someone who is after your personal information. Only offer what's necessary. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22– Jan. 19) — Love looks promising. If you are honest about your expectations, you will build a solid relationship. Make a point to protect your valuables at home or away. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20–Feb. 19) — Greater stability will be yours if you are ready to make a commitment. Rumors will spread if you try to keep matters hidden. Tell the truth and silence your opponents. PISCES (Feb. 20–March 20) — It's time to put your plans into action. You will waste precious time if you wait for someone else to make the first move. If you take the initiative, you will stand out. ARIES (March 21–April 19) — Start saving for your future. Curb unnecessary spending and look into various ways to market your services. You have more to offer than you realize, so don't sell yourself short. TAURUS (April 20–May 20) — Go after your dreams. Once you learn the fundamentals, you can begin training for the career that appeals to you the most. It's never too late to start something new.
