We are the champions, my friends but like a wise bald man used to say: 22 is more than 16 and we’ll take it every time. Especially when it brings a conference championship to Statesboro. Tattler Game Ball: This week’s game ball goes to Ezayi Youyoute. “Izzy” came to Brown Georgia Southern in 2010 and was redshirted his freshman season. He served as backup quarterback to Jaybo Shaw in 2011 and competed for the starting job in 2012, but Jerick McKinnon eventually won the job. Youyoute sat out most of last season due to injury and the coaches even moved him to wide receiver briefly in an attempt to get him more playing time. Before the Georgia Tech game, Izzy asked the coaching staff to allow him to run the scout team offense because he knew the option offense well from his time as quarterback under Jeff Monken. He was willing to do whatever he could to help his team win — even if it did not come with recognition for on-field contributions. After five years in the program, his number was called on senior night with the Sun Belt title on the line. After Kevin Ellison and Favian Upshaw both left the game due to injury, Izzy trotted onto the field to take over on a crucial fourth down and 5 in the fourth quarter, and the Eagles trailing 13-9. He broke

He had a 48-yard run on the next possession to set up another touchdown. Izzy finished the game with 81 yards on five carries and led his team to its final 13 points in the 22-16 championship-clinching win. What a storybook ending to a career for someone we can all be proud to call an Eagle. Speaking of storybook, how about Matt Dobson? Two seasons in a row, Dobson saved the final game of the season by breaking up a pass in the endzone on the next-to-last play of the game to cling to a six-point lead. Last season, he broke up a sure touchdown at Florida. This year, he knocked the ball loose and knocked himself out for the game’s final play with three seconds on the clock. If you haven’t seen the field-level video of the hit,

find it online. What a play! Dobson has two interceptions returned for touchdowns this season, but those two pass breakups may be the two biggest plays of his career. It just feels good to say the Georgia Southern Eagles are champions of the Sun Belt Conference for 2014. What a season it has been. The only question remains is: Will the NCAA do the right thing and grant Georgia Southern a waiver for bowl eligibility? These student athletes deserve it. But if this is where the 2014 season comes to an end, a huge thank-you to the 2014 senior class for all you have done and how you have represented Georgia Southern. Just remember: Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. You will always have a home and a family at Georgia Southern. Congratulations and best wishes to you all!w

There aren’t many times in life when I am rendered nearly speechless. Now is one of those times. It’s hard to put into words the exact thoughts that have been running circles in my head over the last couple days. So let’s start with the main Alex storyline: Georgia Southern won the outright Sun Belt Conference championship Saturday night at Paulson Stadium. And what a night it was to be an Eagle! There are several other notable subplots that I feel are worth mentioning. First, Georgia Southern became just the third program to win a conference title in its first year in FBS. Marshall and Nevada are the other two. The Eagles not only won the conference championship, but finished the season with a perfect 8-0 mark in Sun Belt play. Southern’s 9-3 record could very easily be 11-1 had the Eagles held on to late leads at NC State and Georgia Tech early in the season. But 9-3 is still one heck of a first season in the FBS. Georgia Southern’s request for a waiver for bowl eligibility was denied by the NCAA last week, but the university has appealed and awaits the final decision. Even if Saturday night was the last game the 2014 Eagles play, what a way to go out. How special was the scene on the field after the game? Wow. It wasn’t a pretty game by any means,

Nothing lacking in 'Theory of Everything' Early in The Theory of Everything, a college-aged Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) meets his future wife, Jane (Felicity Jones), at a party, and they quickly get into a discussion about religion. Jane attends the Church of England, but Hawking is a cosmologist, and thus, an “intelligent atheist.” When Jane asks Hawking what he and his fellow cosmologists worship, he answers: a master equation that will explain the universe. A theory of everything. That exchange sets up one of the
recurring themes in this biopic from director James Marsh, but Stephen Hawking’s views on theology are just one element of a dynamic and insightful film. Adapted from Jane’s own memoir, The Theory of Everything follows Hawking’s pursuit of his secular grail, framed by the story of their marriage and the health challenges that threatened to derail Hawking’s entire life. It is an insightful, romantic, charming and tragic film (and not just because you know Hawking will wind

The balance between the dialogueled action and exploration is uncanny. Inquisition grows more compelling as the game goes on and players will notice how vast and ambitious Bioware's game truly is. Player customization, crafting, inventory management and weapon customization are just a few of the many things players will be wrapped up in during this epic gameplay. Like other Bioware games, choices and ethics that players make have a standing consequence on how the game unfolds.
Although the game is stunning and loaded with content, there are a few hiccups as well. Sometimes frame rates will fall and a there are a few graphic glitches, such as clipping issues, but none of that breaks the game or takes away from the story — and that's a plus. Aside from the story, there is even a four-player co-op mode that gives players another experience. great accomplishments is its thoughtful handling of the religious subplot. Told here, the issue was a source of tension between Hawking and his wife, but to Marsh’s credit, it’s presented in a way that doesn’t marginalize audiences on either side of the theological fence. The film’s highlight may be Redmayne, who manages such delicacy in Hawking’s transition from gangly, awkward youth to the figure we recognize today that you never get the feeling he’s putting on a performance. From start to finish, through Hawking’s sickness and his health, Redmayne radiates an irresistible charm. It helps that he isn’t a broadly recognized actor — though this film may change that. Putting someone like Daniel Day-Lewis in the role might elicit an excellent performance, but you would always know you were watching Daniel Day-Lewis. Still, that shouldn’t take away from what Redmayne accomplishes as the famous scientist. Jones is properly sympathetic as Jane, who has to deal with a lot more than her husband’s declining health,

To top it off, the lights will be switched on by jolly ol' Saint Nicholas himself. (Wait — that's President Keel? Our bad. It's the beard.) and Harry Potter fans will be happy to see David Thewlis as Hawking’s professor/mentor Dennis Sciama. Like many biopics, Theory of Everything presents the flaws of the subject as well as its strengths. Some audiences may cringe to see the film’s light portrayal of Hawking’s indulgence in pornography, not so much for its content as for the film’s seeming validation of the habit. It’s a far cry from the warts-and-all portrayals of infidelity we see in similar biopics — “Ray” and “Walk the Line” spring to mind — but the sum effect is the same. By seeing all the dimensions of Hawking, good and bad, you get a figure that is more human and more relatable, almost because of the flaws. Viewers may be surprised to see how much of the film centers on his relationship with his wife — again, it is based on her memoir — but the perspective gives a very human dynamic to his world of quantum physics and relativity. It also deepens the pain of the film’s darker turns, and underscores a film that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit as well as its failures.w

It's the most wonderful time of the year once again: a time of goodwill, good food and a blanket excuse to use awful, holiday-themed puns and cliches in newspaper headlines. As you know, Statesboro has a swingin' holiday scene, and this year's celebration — thanks to a little rearranging courtesy of last week's weather — is going to be as big a bash as ever. Check out Sweetheart Circle at 4 p.m. Thursday and head downtown at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon to get in on the fun, or risk being called a Scrooge from the people who like rockin' around the Christmas tree. Annual Holiday Lighting — Do you want to build a snowman?! Whether you're sick of Frozen references or not, this very well might be your only opportunity to see
Celebration. Along with the Averitt Center's All Fired Up Holiday Sale, it's probably the Boro's best place for shopping local for the holidays with all your farmers market favorites. Run in the 'Boro — Don't be ashamed: Everyone puts on a little extra poundage thanks to those fantastic holiday meals. (Seriously, food is one of the reasons for the season.) But if you just can't stand to be seen with your little Thanksgiving food baby, run that bad boy off at the annual holiday 5k Run in the 'Boro. The race will kick off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in front of city hall. Registration is now $25 and can be done until 4 p.m. on the day of the race. Chili Cook-Off — As a counter to the fitness nuts mentioned above, you could just indulge in some of the

The new Star Wars trailer is here And the Internet collectively lost its mind A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, a helmetless storm trooper appeared in frame, panicked and sweaty in the middle of vast desert landscape, kicking off the first official look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens. After months of leaked images and idle speculation around director J.J. Abrams' film, Disney and Lucasfilm on Friday debuted an 88-second teaser trailer for the seventh entry into the blockbuster franchise online and in about 30 North American theaters. The dark, energetic teaser, which has been watched nearly 3 million times on YouTube, blasts viewers with quick, disjointed images of classic and slightly altered "Star Wars" images, like TIE Fighters, X-Wings, droids and the Millennium Falcon. Set to a new John Williams score,
audiences get a peek at newcomers John Boyega (the storm trooper in question), Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and a mysterious caped man in a frozen forest carrying a three-pronged light saber. Many assume the sinister, lumbering figure to be Adam Driver, who is rumored to be playing a villain in the highly secretive movie. Andy Serkis is responsible for the haunting voiceover narration throughout the short spot, which

Brawny, bearded and butt-naked — for charity SHEBOYGAN, Wisconsin — If hops make you hot, and you like your men like your beer — stout — these guys have just the thing for you. A group of brawny, bearded brewers from the Sheboygan area has posed mostly nude for a calendar that is raising money for charity. The 2015 Brew Men Calendar features 11 brewing professionals from 3 Sheeps Brewing, 8th Street Ale Haus and Plymouth Brewing Co. Proceeds from the calendar, which can be bought
online or at various bars, grocers and liquor stores in Wisconsin and northern Illinois, will be donated to the Movember Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on men's health issues, including prostate and testicular cancer. Unsurprisingly, the idea came about when they were enjoying a few beers. After Kurt Jensen, owner of 8th Street Ale Haus, began talking to some of his brewing buddies about doing charity work, the group of beer-lovers eventually
previews a world 30 years after the events of Return of the Jedi. Despite some negative reaction, overall, fans were not disappointed, even with the sobering knowledge that the actual film doesn't hit theaters till Dec. 18, 2015. "That Star Wars trailer gave me the tingles," director Edgar Wright said on Twitter. "Language and emojis fail to express what's in my heart at this moment," actress Anna Kendrick added emphatically. Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn also weighed in, writing, "Because everyone keeps asking me my opinion, I LOVED the Star Wars trailer. It infused me with a giddy-little-
kidness." Commenters on the longstanding "Star Wars" fan site TheForce.net were similarly delighted by the visuals, which seemed to pay homage to the grungy aesthetic of George Lucas's original trilogy. There may have been no plot clues to be gleaned from the advertisement, but fan interest has certainly been piqued with the exciting array of images and the notable lack of original cast members Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. It might be some time before audiences get another opportunity to feast on new Episode VII images, but fan excitement, much like the Force, is definitely awake.w

came up with something similar to a swimsuit calendar. Grant Pauly, founder of 3 Sheeps, said he hopes the calendars will raise awareness and stimulate conversations about men's health, he told Sheboygan Press Media. "I was down in Chicago when someone who saw the group photo on our Facebook page came up to me and we ended up having a 20 minute conversation," he said. Jensen said convincing the guys to take off their clothes for a good cause was easier than he expected, and Pauly agreed. "Putting the calendar together, that was pretty easy," said Pauly. "We have the most difficult part ahead: getting the word out." The calendar marks the first fundraising effort of Brewers Against Bad Things, a group that Pauly and Jensen recently founded to raise money for charitable causes.w

Holli Deal Saxon CLUB MISBEHAVIOR — Police responded to a disturbance at Club 125. One witness said another man busted out the window of the club after being escorted out. A third man said a fourth man grabbed him and choked him. A fifth man said the man who busted out the window struck him after the fifth man escorted him out of the club In a separate incident, police responded to the club about a drunk person who wouldn’t leave. On arrival, an officer made contact with a man who was “highly intoxicated and trying to fight employees of the establishment.” DRUNK AND NASTY — A man was found at Lakeside Café, with his head bent down almost into his plate of food. An officer noted that the man was wearing soiled clothes, had food smeared across his hands and smelled of alcohol
and urine. The man admitted he had been drinking and had taken Adderal and Xanax. He was also found to be intoxicated and was arrested. STRANGE THREATS — Police spoke with two men at the Russell Union Rotunda who said while they were waiting for a Christian concert to begin, another man asked about God and homosexuality and said, “I will kill you both.” Officers found the suspect, who admitted to the threats. When asked how he intended to do that, the man said, “You know how,” and would not elaborate. The victims didn’t want to press charges, but when the officer told the man to leave and that he would be banned from campus, he walked over to a nearby bench, sat down, then got up and danced a few minutes later. Police arrested him.w
