Christmas break is no time to sit at home with nothing to do. It's a time to celebrate friends and family, home and community — but sometimes it's hard to find things to do beyond baking cookies and watching movies at home. That's where we come in. Like we did last year, Connect has hunted down the hottest holiday happenings in our little corner of Southeast Georgia. We did our best to make it day-by-day, but we had to do a little fudging. Hopefully, that gives you a bit of wiggle room for planning. It's our present to you. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, and may your season be bright!
Dec. 9: Christmas crafting Whether you’re a college student slogging through final exams or a busy adult trying to carve out some time to celebrate, there are few things more festive and relaxing than a good crafting session. The Statesboro Regional Public Library (124 S. Main St.) is here to help with that: They invite the public to a workshop to make some fun, easy Christmas decorations to spruce up their space. The library staff will provide supplies, directions and a space to work. Everyone will leave with a festive decoration.

Southern lost, but State should be ashamed Unsportsmanlike conduct from the Panthers sours State's blowout victory I don’t want to talk about it. But I think I have to. First of all, we pointed out last week that Georgia State was a much improved team from what Georgia Southern demolished last season. But I had no idea Alex how much the Panthers had improved. State shut down Georgia Southern’s potent offense, holding the Eagles to just 203 total yards. Panther quarterback Nick Arbuckle threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns. But perhaps the most surprising stat of the game was the team rushing yardage totals: State 143, Southern 135. It was just not Georgia Southern’s day. The Eagles had a few dropped passes, a missed field goal, some blown coverages and a few ill-timed penalties. But give State credit. They came to play and they kicked Southern’s tail in the second half. Tattler Game Ball: In a game like that, there really aren’t any individual efforts that stand out. So this week’s game ball will be a lifetime achievement award of sorts. The 2015 seniors get the game ball because of the way they have represented Georgia Southern on and off the field during the course of their careers. That definitely wasn’t how they wanted their final game at Paulson Stadium to go. But the seniors finish 29-3 at home in their careers and get to play one more time when the Eagles meet Bowling Green in the GoDaddy Bowl on Dec. 23. The Sun Belt has four teams going bowling. Joining the Eagles in the postseason are Arkansas State (New Orleans Bowl vs. Louisiana Tech), Appalachian State (Camellia Bowl vs. Ohio), and Georgia State (Cure Bowl vs. San Jose State). If I were a Georgia State fan, I’d
be proud of the team’s win, but I would be absolutely embarrassed of the way they conducted themselves. I understand having a chip on their shoulder. I get that the Panthers were fired up after last season’s “Paulson Brown Stadium North” stunt. They have gotten plenty of disrespect from the folks in Statesboro. But I have never in my life seen a college football team with so little class, professionalism or discipline. I’ve heard stories of completely unacceptable (and even some illegal) behavior before, during and after the game by Georgia State players, coaches and staff. But because I cannot confirm those events, I’ll just discuss what I saw with my own eyes. On the field, State was penalized eight times for 103 yards. Five of those were unsportsmanlike conduct calls, and one player was ejected in the second quarter. Off the field, the Georgia State team and staff looked like a bunch of idiots. I’m sorry, but I can’t think of a better word to describe their behavior. I have been in the student section for many a game at Paulson Stadium. I know Georgia Southern students weren’t exactly wishing the Panthers luck on their finals this week. But it’s college football. Student sections are going to be pretty ruthless in rivalry games like these. So be a man and let your play on the field do the talking. I’ve seen one or two players respond to hecklers in the past. But the entire Georgia State sideline spent most of the game taunting Southern fans, mouthing and gesturing back at the student section. On several occasions, a couple dozen players and staff were turned around facing the stands with middle fingers in the air. I’m not exaggerating that number at all. I’m a grown man. Bad language, obscene gestures and other “adult”
ABOVE, the faces of Georgia Southern fans in the student section tell the story of what was happening on the field during the Eagles' 34-7 loss to Georgia State at Paulson Stadium Saturday. LEFT, Georgia Southern wide receiver Derek Keaton, left, gets behind Georgia State cornerback Jerome Smith but can't hang on to a pass from quarterback Kevin Ellison in the first quarter. SCOTT BRYANT/staff
content doesn’t bother me. I can handle it. But it’s classless. It’s smalltime. It’s just not how a group representing a university should conduct themselves. Have more respect for your university, your opponent and the thousands of people watching you. I’m embarrassed that Georgia Southern shares conference ties with a program that is run so unprofessionally. And it starts with the coaching staff and administration. Obviously those actions have been allowed, tolerated and apparently even encouraged to some extent by those in authority. It shows a complete lack of control by the institution and its athletics program. It’s a shame that the biggest win
in Georgia State’s football history had to be marred by such an embarrassment of actions by what was the better team on the field Saturday. I am proud of the fact that while they had every opportunity, my Eagles didn’t stoop to that level. They didn’t get sucked into acting like a bunch of out of control, classless children. Even in a loss, the Eagles represented Georgia Southern with class and dignity. And I thank the players, coaches and athletics staff for that. Congratulations on the win, Georgia State. But please know that until you start acting like a Division I football program, you are still a joke in my book.w

Dec. 10–13: 'The Best Christmas Pageant Ever' Savannah Christian Church (55 Al Henderson Boulevard, Savannah) is staging a play that dwells on the grace and forgiveness of Christmas — and they're working in a few laughs in this year's holiday production. The whole school is horrified when the rowdy, rambunctious and irreverent Herdman kids are cast as all the leading roles in the annual Christmas pageant. While students and parents alike protest kick up a fuss over the casting, the pageant director becomes even more determined to pull off the story — even as the Herdman's wreak havoc on the set. Funny, tender and touching, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever gives an unconventional look at the Christmas spirit. The show will run at 7 p.m. on Dec. 11–13. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Savannah Christian Church website and at the door.

Dec. 10–12: 'Amahl & the Night Visitors' For the second day of Christmas, take yourself and your loved ones to the Averitt Center for the Arts for a magical little play in the biblical spirit of the season: Amahl & the Night Visitors. This Christmas story is based on the New Testament account of the Magi and imagines their journey to see the newborn Jesus. One evening, as they travel, they find themselves as guests in the house of the crippled youth Amahl and his mother. Struggling to survive and feed her child and herself, Amahl’s mother attempts to steal some of the Magi’s gold — gold which would be a gift for the new King. The theft is discovered, and what starts as a tale of deception and desperation quickly progresses into a story of grace, redemption and healing. Written in English by Gian Carlo Menotti, this program draws on the composer’s childhood memories of
Christmas in Spain. In this production, Menotti has successfully woven the traditional biblical Christmas story together with a beautiful tale of grace and restoration. This is the first opera successfully composed for television production. Amahl & the Night Visitors is a one-hour show that churches groups, families and individuals will enjoy as a kickoff to their Christmas season. Directed by Dr. Tamara Watson Harper, the show features Arikka Gregory, Spencer Boyum, Allen Henderson, William Lavonis and Cyril Durant (of Statesboro band Those Cats). The show will run Dec. 10–12 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults ($21 non-members) and $10 for all youth. If they buy their tickets in advance, any employees of Bulloch County, the City of Statesboro, Bulloch County Schools, Georgia Southern University, East Georgia State College and Ogeechee Technical College can also get tickets for $10 each.

Snow may be a little thin on the ground, but the Savannah Harbor Foundation has plenty of other tricks in their toy bag — namely, a gingerbread village, gorgeous lights, a complimentary ferry to and from River Street, and an Ice Bar, all located at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa (1 Resort Drive, Savannah). The event, sponsored by the Savannah Barbor Foundation, raises funds for several local nonprofit organizations serving children and families during the holidays. The Wonderland is open daily from 5–9 p.m. Thursday–Sunday nights until Dec. 13. From Dec. 16–24, the Wonderland will be open daily. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the Savannah Harbor Foundation website, where you can also find a schedule of guest performers and special events.

Tucked away from the lights and noise of modern Statesboro, Freddie Blitch Farms (625 Freddie Blitch Road, Statesboro) is the perfect place for the Journey to Bethlehem, hosted by the First Baptist Church of Statesboro and carried off by about 100 volunteers. In addition to the manger scene, Journey to Bethlehem offers a miniature village with 15 different interactive booths, where visitors can try period food, get a whiff of frankincense and myrrh, watch potters, make jewelry and touch the many live animals brought in for the event, including sheep and camels. After a hayride and a wander through the candlelit village, visitors are invited to dress up in period costume and get their pictures taken — and everything is completely free. FBC children’s minister Susan Allen describes the event as a “quiet, gentle evening” for young families, although everyone is welcome to attend and find something to enjoy. The event is outside, so visitors are advised to dress warmly and wear walking shoes. For more information, call FBC at (912) 489-7930. The Journey to Bethlehem will be held for one night only from 6–8 p.m.

Nights of lights Every year, Guido Gardens in Metter, Georgia, decks out its 3– 4 acres of manicured gardens in a quarter of a million Christmas lights of all colors and varieties. There’s a little something here for everyone: Bible stories recreated for the religious crowd; Christmas trees and angels for the holiday traditionalists; animals, helicopters and rainbows just to shake things up a bit. The Nights of Lights at the gardens attract 15,000 to 18,000 people a year, and the gardens themselves are open 24/7. This year, Nights of Lights will run every night from Dec. 17–31, from 6–9 p.m. Entry is free.

bring a lot of fans along with Georgia Southern to make this a great bowl game.” The bowl matchup will feature two teams with highpowered offenses that score their points in very different fashions. Georgia Southern led the FBS in rushing yards per game for a second consecutive season while Bowling Green boasts an aerial attack quarterbacked by Matt Johnson, who led all passers in the nation with 4,700 yards and 43 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. Bowl preparations won’t quite be in full force this week, with on-field practice time taking a backseat to finals week while Eagle players finish off their fall semester. “With playing the extra week in the regular season, we’re a week behind on our recruiting,” Fritz said. “We’re going to catch up on that while our guys get ready for finals. After that, we’ve got a couple of weeks to prepare and continue to get healthy.” Mike Anthony may be reached at (912) 489-9408.w
Eagle Athletics is making sure Eagle Nation has hassle-free accommodations and transportation necessary to attend the game. In addition to bus trips leaving from both Statesboro and Atlanta, they are also chartering flights from Savannah and Atlanta. Arrangements have been planned so Eagle fans can capitalize their time during our first bowl game experience — arriving with plenty of time to partake in bowl-festivities. Reservations are first-come, firstserved and are available to all Eagle fans. Due to the time constraints, no seats will be reserved until payment has been received. Packages do not include a bowl game ticket. To secure your seat with Eagle Nation with one of these packages, please contact the Athletic Foundation at 1 (800) GSU-WINS or email Justin Callaway at jcallaway@georgiasouthern.edu. Please include your full name, the best way to reach you, preferred package and number of travelers. Visit GSEages.com/Bowl for detailed information. Breakdowns of each package can be found under "Accommodations." —Georgia Southern Athletic Foundation

The Georgia Southern Eagles are headed to their first bowl game in program history as the team accepted a bid to the GoDaddy Bowl to be played against Bowling Green University on Dec. 23 in Mobile, Alabama. The Eagles (8-4, 6-2 Sun Belt) will be squaring off against the champions of the Mid-American Conference as the Falcons (10-3, 8-1) put on an impressive display as they defeated Northing Illinois by a count of 34-14 in Friday’s MAC championship game. “We’re fortunate and excited to be the first team in Georgia Southern history to get to a bowl game,” GSU coach Willie Fritz said. ”I’ve talked to a few people who have been to (the GoDaddy Bowl) and it seems like a great place for us.” “We wish that we could have gone into this in a little different way,” Fritz said, referring to Saturday’s regular season-ending loss. “But we’ve done a lot in our first two years in FBS and this is a good way for us to finish out the year on a high note." Georgia Southern will hope that its

GEMINI (May 21– June 20) — Seems like a great month for a midlife crisis! Go ahead and change your major, sell your car or file for that divorce. Change is always good, Gemini. Trust the stars! CANCER (June 21– July 22) — Despite the fact that your sign shares a name with a deadly disease that kills thousands, it’s going to be another great month. I mean, yeah, there are people dying globally, the world is in shambles and Donald Trump is No. 1 in the Republican polls, but your life is hunky dory! Must be nice! LEO (July 23–Aug. 22) — According to the stars, you’ve worked really hard this year and you’re really enjoying the benefits of that. Lucky you. You’re probs getting that promotion you’ve been waiting for. You should literally go ahead and plan on it. Go ahead and buy your boss a thank-you card. Hell, move into your new office without asking! VIRGO (Aug. 23– Sept. 22) — It’s a good time to start that Pinterest project, because someone is feeling artsy! You’re totally reverting back to your scene kid days. Go ahead and dye your hair blue and start wearing all black. Pick up smoking and look like you walked straight out of RENT. LIBRA (Sept. 23– Oct. 23) — The stars say that something significant is going to happen this month — so you're probably actually pregnant. Sucks, right? I mean, you’re barely holding it together as it is. Sheesh. You’re like an onion, Libra: smelly and an acquired taste. SCORPIO (Oct. 24– Nov. 22) — Things are about to get weird. The stars say that your relationships have probably been a little off lately. Things are about to go south fast. Block all of your loved ones on Facebook, delete your Twitter and only post black and white pictures of potatoes on your Instagram. Don’t answer the phone until February.w

What started out as one family’s gesture in spreading Christmas cheer has grown into a holiday display that draws visitors from across the region as well as serves as a mission to help those in need. TMT Farms has opened its Christmas lights display at 16658 Old River Road North. While there is no admission charge, visitors are encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food, children’s toys or cash, all of which will be distributed to needy families in the area. Roy and Deborah Thompson, along with their son Tyler Thompson, daughter Jennifer McCranie and their families, started out several years ago, decorating their family property on Old River Road North for Christmas. “It started out as a light thing, for Christmas spirit, but it has turned into a ministry for us,” said Roy Thompson, a Bulloch County commissioner and owner of Statesboro Floor Covering. As the years went by, the annual event shifted from just a cool place to drive through during the holidays to a bustling, busy month-long collection effort that helps provide blessings to needy families in the Bulloch County area. The Christmas display features thousands and thousands of lights, sculptures and inflatables scattered among antique farm equipment, an old moonshine still and replicas (storefronts) of some of Bulloch County’s historical businesses such as Snooky’s restaurant and a new addition, Henry’s Ladies’ Shop. The dirt driveways that meander through the woods leading to the homes of the Thompson and McCranie families also leads visitors past a replica of an old Western town, complete with a chapel, stable, mercantile and more.
The chapel and stable are real buildings (the “stable” is actually a reception hall with a kitchen) and Thompson added an Indian village with teepees last year. Life-sized fiberglass horses and cattle are new additions this year, along with a few “surprises,” Thompson said. The donations of nonperishable foods such as canned goods or boxes of pasta and cereals will be distributed to food banks and families in need, he said. The donations have grown to include toys for children of financially challenged families, and even monetary gifts to be used for utility bills, clothing and other needs. The display “is larger than last year,” Thompson said, which is a comment he makes every year as the display grows. “We have other attractions. Kids will like a lot of it.” The TMT Farms lights display will run every night through Dec. 29, he said. “When the sun goes down, the lights will come on.” Coming from Statesboro, visitors will turn off Northside Drive (Hwy. 80) onto North Main Street, which will turn into Lakeview Road. The drive is about nine miles, then a left turn onto Old River Road North will have drivers go about 4.5 miles to 16658 Old River Road North. The address can’t be missed, as a glow of light can be seen from miles away, and the entrance to the farm is well lighted with a fence, flag pole and nativity scene. For more information, access the TMT Farms Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ TMT-Farms-Christmas-LightsDisplay-304215459685088/. Holli Deal Saxon may be reached at (912) 489-9414. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23 –Dec. 21) — No one can pronounce your sign’s name, Sagittarius. For that reason, you may find yourself stuttering when people ask what you thought of Adele’s latest album. This month is going to be climactic for you, so stop skipping class or being late to work. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22– Jan. 19) — Maybe you’ll actually get the answers to life questions this month, or maybe the universe is still just like, “Lol, idk.” You need to think a lot — like write down your dreams and stuff. It won’t help, but it will distract you from worrying so much. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20– Feb. 19) — This is a good month to listen to “Aquarius” from the hit musical, Hair. You’re going to do some amazing and life-changing things this month, like pay bills on time and actually fold your laundry. To add balance, you should definitely text your ex. PISCES (Feb. 20– March 20) — Lol, this month is going to suck. The stars are not in your favor, kiddo. Things are about to get shaken up. I know, you’re worried. Just take some deep breaths and stay up for a few nights in a row. Everything is fine. ARIES (March 21– April 19) — Looks like you’re up for another untamed month. It’s a good time to listen to Miley Cyrus. You should wear a beret because you’re filled with some seriously quirky energy. Go out and party. It’s a good idea; the stars say so. TAURUS (April 20– May 20) — You are literally on the verge of knowing the meaning of life. Mars is doing the thing that makes you smart and stuff. Show this off by carrying around an old textbook. If you go outside after 6 p.m., you will absorb Mars’ power and rule the known world.
