Habitat for Humanity will be lining the courthouse lawn with American flags to promote their Flag Program around Bulloch County, and will offer people the chance to register to support the Bulloch County chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Habitat will also be kicking off a fundraiser backing their Bulloch Builder campaign, which will provide affordable housing to families within our community. And if you need a little breather away from the putt-putt and the pooches, check out the art display on the courthouse lawn courtesy of artist George Snyder. The works will be featured on the courthouse lawn as part of his "Lyrical Geometry" exhibit featured in the Main Gallery of Averitt Center for the Arts. To cap off Green Grits, Eagle Creek Brewing Company will be holding a tasting from 6–9 p.m. Chyann Rose will be rocking the stage all night with an array of hit country and classic rock tunes. Head downtown Friday afternoon for a fun night had by all! And give those green grits a try. Seriously.w

The March F1RST Friday celebration, "Green Grits," will take place on the courthouse lawn this Friday, March 6, 5:30–8 p.m. In a celebration that manages to combine St. Patrick's Day, environmental sustainability and a little Seussical flair (green eggs and ham, anyone?), Green Grits brings Southern comfort at its greenest. Attendees are invited to try a free bowl of green grits — yes, actual grits and yes, literally green — courtesy of Stacy and Paula Freeman of Freeman’s Mills. And green delicacies are only the first of the features visitors can expect from Green Grits. Man's best friend is invited to get in on the fun as judges search for the Pooch of Green at the First Annual Downtown Statesboro Paw-walk. Dogs decked out from nose to tail in shamrocks and green costumes have a shot at winning a doggy prize pack. Other fun events at the Green Grits FIRST Friday celebration include packing out the courthouse lawn with putt-putt, lawn games and jewelry making.

All tied up at the top Also: Eagle baseball sends Bulldogs packing Another week has gone by and nothing has changed at the top of the Sun Belt men’s basketball standings. With two games left, Georgia Southern, Georgia State and Louisiana Monroe are locked in a first place tie at 13-5. The three teams started last Alex week in the same situation. Georgia Southern jumped out to a 20-2 lead and never looked back Thursday night at Appalachian State en route to a 77-58 win. It was the Eagles’ first win in Boone since 2004 and win number 20 on the season. UL Monroe held serve with a 75-57 win at South Alabama. But ArkansasLittle Rock provided some help for
the Eagles and Warhawks by beating Georgia State 92-83, leaving the Panthers one game behind the two firstplace teams. Monroe traveled to Appalachian State and got drilled by the Mountaineers 66-43 Saturday afternoon, Brown leaving Georgia Southern alone atop the conference standings for a few hours. But Southern could not take advantage of the opportunity: The Eagles fell behind early at UL Lafayette, recovered to take a brief lead, but the Ragin’ Cajuns used a 12-for-24 performance from behind the three-point line to win 68-58. Meanwhile, Georgia State won
75-64 at Troy to pull all three teams back into a tie with two games to play. This week, State travels to UL Monroe for a huge showdown Thursday night. Southern will host UT Arlington in the Eagles’ final home game of the season Thursday night. Georgia Southern closes out the regular season in Atlanta Saturday afternoon against Georgia State in another game that will have Sun Belt regular season championship implications. Monroe hosts Texas State Saturday in its regular season finale. It goes without saying, but this is an enormous week for Georgia Southern basketball. Thursday night at Hanner will be Senior Night. This year’s senior class has been through several tough seasons, battling injuries and other issues, and has put together an amazing season so far. The seniors deserve a packed house. It should be a special night at Hanner, so get there early for senior night festivities. Baseball update: Sweepin' the Bulldogs Eagle baseball welcomed the Georgia Bulldogs to town over the weekend and promptly swept them right back to Athens. In game one, Southern overcame three errors and a late 3-2 deficit as Aaron Mizell’s two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning led the Eagles to a 4-3 win.
Game two started Saturday afternoon, but rain forced the game to be suspended in the bottom of the second inning and was resumed on Sunday. Tripp Sheppard started for the Eagles and pitched two scoreless innings on Saturday. When the game resumed Sunday, Sheppard returned to the mound and got the Eagles into the fourth inning before Jason Richman came on. Richman pitched four shutout innings and allowed just one hit. Ryan Frederick and Chris Brown slammed the door late in the combined five-hit shutout as the Eagles won game two 1-0. The Eagles trailed 3-1 in game three, but Hunter Thomas' solo home run in the bottom of the sixth followed by Chase Griffin's two-run single in the seventh gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish. Georgia Southern took two of three from the Bulldogs in each of the last two seasons, so after this weekend’s sweep, the Eagles are 7-2 over UGA since 2013. Southern hosts Mercer Tuesday night and then opens Sun Belt play when Appalachian State comes to town for a three-game set. The Eagles took of three from the Mountaineers last season and would love to get conference play off to a strong start. Eagle Nation, your Eagles need you at Hanner Thursday night and Clements Stadium all weekend long. See you there!w

Art, passion and history with Tango Buenos Aires If you love Dancing with the Statesboro Stars or reality shows featuring competitive ballroom dancing, you aren't going to want to miss this. Tango Buenos Aires, a company of 10 dancers and their accompanying musicians, will stop in Statesboro for a onenight-only performance of tango music based on the life of Eva Perón — feminist, activist and late First Lady of Argentina, the tremendous historical figure off whom the musical Evita is based. In a roughly two-hour performance, Tango Buenos Aires will perform 25 different numbers of single-couple

With flashy costumes, searing music and stunning dancing, the performers will electrify audiences with the fury and passion of one of the most loved and most lusted-after dance styles: the tango. Tango Buenos Aires appeared at Georgia Southern University's Performing Arts Center back in 2011, performing a show called "Fire and Passion of Tango." Myths of transformation come to life in Ovid's "Metamorphoses" Before there were the Oscars, there were the Greeks. Before the Christian Greys and Harry Potters, before the Katnisses and Starks and all the characters who make up the backdrop of today’s pop culture, there were the myths. Many of the stories found in Greek mythology — Eros and Psyche, Daphne and Apollo, Orpheus and the lyre — are so pervasive in Western culture that you can know the tale without remembering ever having heard it. These are the stories that have sunk deep into our collective unconscious, shaping our worldview and defining our understanding. In the labyrinths of our subconscious, the deepest recesses of our dreaming minds, the myths reign. It is this dreamlike state you’ll be sent to when watching Metamorphoses at the Georgia Southern Center for Art and Theatre. The play, based on a collection of myths of the same title by the Greek writer Ovid, contains a series of vignettes set in and around a pool of water — represented by a shallow pool embedded into the stage. The show, written by Mary Zimmerman, is directed by Lisa Abbott and features several familiar faces from previous Georgia Southern theatrical endeavors. While the show is somewhat more abstract and theatrical than most students have encountered, Abbott says the cast has embraced all the opportunities and challenges the show has offered. “In the rehearsal room, we have a wall covered with photos and paintings of the different gods and breakdowns of the different myths,” Abbott said. “We have a couple of books of mythology that have been floating around rehearsal. There’s always someone looking through one at any given point. They are 100 percent willing to explore
the physical side of it. They complement each other beautifully.” By the “physical side,” Abbott is referring to the many dance numbers that help to enhance the performance and carry the story. She refers to Metamorphoses as a postmodern play that draws frequently on movement and dance as a narrative vehicle. Zimmerman’s script had several dance scenes written into it, but Abbott and

her crew added four more numbers that, in her opinion, only add to the story. To assist with the movement and choreography, Abbott has recruited Mathyn Miller of the Statesboro Youth Ballet, whose style combines ballet with modern dance for a spellbinding effect in the ethereal play. The dancers double as a kind of Greek chorus, complementing a narrator through the course of the play. “This (postmodern) style of work … really captures the essence of the stories,” Abbott said. “We get to see transformations in all these different ways. It’s very theatrical, which is also a big draw. Like I said, there’s a lot of freedom within it, so that, as a director, I can do things like add dance numbers here, there and everywhere. For me as a director, one of my favorite things is exploring storytelling through movement. I work very heavily with movement, and this is a great opportunity to really do that.” The myths — stories of love and loss, reunion and redemption — embrace life's humor and tragedy, sometimes turning from one to the other on a dime. Raw and honest, the stories drive the audience to laughter and, in the very next moment, force them to tears. Embracing a mythology and a medium not often seen in Statesboro, Metamorphoses is sure to be a visually stunning standout performance. Nerd it up at GnomeCon GnomeCon, a three-day convention created by Savannah area board gamers, is slated for the weekend of March 6–8 at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm Street in the heart of downtown Savannah. This is the fourth year for the locally-organized event. Last year’s convention drew more than 850 people from all over the Southeast and helped raise more than $1,500 on behalf of Live Oak Public Libraries. “This year’s event is shaping up to be the best GnomeCon ever,” said GnomeCon President Heidi Schweier. “Each year, we keep adding more and more, and our attendance continues to grow. We’re very proud of what we’ve created.”
New this year will be comic books. Guests include Dean Motter, creator of Mister X, as well as local artists Mad Rupert (Adventure Time) and Tracy Yardley (Sonic the Hedgehog). In addition to the numerous types of tabletop, miniature, collectible card and role-playing games being offered at GnomeCon, there will also be a number of panels and events. Featured guests

Award-winning rodeo will return in April The Statesboro Kiwanis Rodeo will arrive in mid-April, providing two nights of bulls, broncs and family entertainment. Hedrick Rodeo Company, which has conducted the rodeo in Statesboro for the past three years, was recently recognized by the Southern Professional Rodeo Association, said Statesboro Kiwanis Club member and rodeo cochairman Bill Anderson. Danny Hedrick, owner of the company, said his crew was named the 2014 SPRA Stock Contractor of the Year. A gray draft horse cross gelding, “Willie,” easily recognized as one of the company’s largest horses, won the title of 2014 SPRA Saddle Bronc of the Year, and Hedrick’s wife, Jessica, was named the 2014 SPRA Contract Act of the Year for her daredevil trick riding performances. She has a repertoire that includes riding three horses at a time, standing on their
backs and controlling them all from that position, while the horses lope around the arena and jump through fiery rings. Hedrick was humble while discussing the awards, but Anderson and rodeo co-chairman Don Poe agree that the club’s choice in selecting Hedrick Rodeo Company was the right one. “We had reasons for selecting Danny,” Anderson said. “It was really nice to have (those reasons) confirmed through their awards. We did bring in a good quality rodeo.” The Hedricks have a long history of rodeo and have operated the stock contracting company for 11 years, he said. His family and the Statesboro Kiwanis Club have formed a friendly partnership in bringing the rodeo to town each spring, where sellout crowds enjoy the show, the food and vendors, Poe said. This year the rodeo will take place
include game designer Richard Borg; horror filmmaker James O’Rear; and fantasy authors Katherine Kurtz and Scott MacMillan. Guests will also participate in panels, where attendees will have the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics such as game design and marketing, writing for fun and profit, breaking in to the comic book industry, and other science fiction/fantasy and gaming-related subject matter. Laughter is also on tap, as the convention welcomes local comedian Phil Keeling, who will be recording his next comedy album at GnomeCon. Local improv group “The Odd Lot” will also perform, as well as horror-meister Professor Fear. His twisted game show delving into the wonderful world of geek trivia has been a highlight of pre-
April 17–18 at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds on Georgia Highway 67 South. Advance tickets will go on sale March 15 at Anderson’s General Store in Statesboro. An option to buy tickets online will be announced at a later date, Poe said. Adult tickets will cost $15, and children’s tickets will be $10. Hedrick will bring new stock, a new trick rider (Marshall Greene) and a new clown, Roy Kozak. There will be arena games and lots of local and other professional contestants in such events as barrel racing, steer wrestling, bull riding and team roping. Greene holds world records in rope tricks from horseback. Miss Rodeo USA Kirbi Allen from Arkansas will also make appearances in Statesboro before and during the rodeo. Vendors will bring funnel cakes, barbecue sandwiches, Coca-Cola products, hamburgers and other favorites. Vendors will include a leather goods booth, T-shirts and belts and a jump house for kids. Rodeo fans who participate in a contest may very well win a chance to win a new car, Poe said. He wouldn’t divulge details yet, but promised more information as the rodeo nears. Vendors interested in having booths or spots at the rodeo may call Poe at (912) 541-0411. More information about Hedrick
vious GnomeCons. Audience participation is encouraged and everyone who attends will have a chance to win prizes. Statesboro’s own Galactic Comics will be in attendance to let people at the con know where they are. Keith Brown, the owner at Galactic Comics, says that people from around the southeast corner of Georgia will drive quite a ways to join gaming communities and that Savannahbased gamers are still part of Galactic’s customer base. Not only does attending the con give Galactic a chance to draw in some new business, but it also offers a great chance to network with likeminded gaming enthusiasts. The convention will also feature dealers selling games and supplies, and science fiction and fantasy-related items such as comic books, t-shirts, art and collectibles. Saturday there will be a flea market, where registered attendees can sell or trade unwanted games, comics and other memorabilia, or pick up more at bargain prices.
