Live music will also take place on the Rousakis Plaza Arbor Stage on Saturday from 7–10 p.m., featuring the '80s cover band The Breakfast Club, presented by Bud Light Music. “Our staff really wanted to have a fun band for the weekend, and we all agreed that bacon and The Breakfast Club would be the perfect combination,” Bligh said. The Savannah Bacon Fest will kick off on Friday, Sept. 4, from 4–10 p.m., with First Friday fireworks presented by Wet Willie’s Savannah at 9:30 p.m. The festivities will continue on Saturday, Sept. 5 from 10 a.m.– 10 p.m.w

That’s right, bacon lovers — get ready for a weekend full of fun and amazing food, all celebrating bacon, the candy of meat! The Savannah Bacon Fest is back on River Street with even more local restaurants serving up their mouthwatering creations. The second annual event will take place Sept. 4–5. “The Savannah Waterfront Association was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and turnout at last year’s bacon festival, so we can’t wait to see what all of our restaurants will be dishing out this year,” said Carrie Bligh, Executive Director of the SWA. In addition to bacon sampling, there will be plenty of activities for the family to enjoy, from toy piggy derbies to mechanical pig rides. “We are also excited to have Hormel Black Label Bacon back this year, who will be showcasing their bacon-fueled motorcycle and offering multiple chances to win a free oneyear supply of bacon,” added Bligh. So what’s on the menu (besides the obvious ingredient)? Just as a Southerner can fry just about anything, a true bacon connoisseur can work bacon into any and every dish. Here are just a few teasers: candied bacon, bacon popcorn, bacon brownies, bacon wrapped shrimp, bacon wrapped hot dogs, bacon cream soda ice cream float, bacon chips with peach jelly dip, pulled pork stuffed bacon poppers and bacon super chicken bombs. You can find these items and more served up from these local favorites: Ampersand, Andaz Savannah, Bayou Café, Cheesecake Market, Chocolat by Adam Turoni, Feather & Freight, Leopold’s Ice Cream, Savannah Rae’s Popcorn, The Naked Dog, Tondee’s Tavern, Treylor Park and Wet Willies. Foodies can take a break from sampling to enjoy entertainment throughout the weekend. Bud Light will have their two-story build-a-

Our pick: TV worth watching this fall Ah, Fall — that most wonderful time of the year. It’s hard not to love the flickering grin of a jack-olantern to the cool brisk in the air, you’re probably missing all of that because of an epic television line-up beginning soon. We at Connect know how stressed you are with your classes, jobs and napping schedule. We decided to take our most anticipated new television shows and share them with you, so that you may prioritize your weeks to come. Grab your Pumpkin Spice Latte, a blanket and cuddle up to these epic series: 5) Neil Patrick Harris: Best Time Ever Let’s face it: NPH was built to host a live TV show. The guy is entertainment at its finest — just look at the time he hosted the Tony Awards. His new one-hour show on NBC is guaranteed to be top-notch live television. There’s not much known about specifics of the show, but it’s advertised to offer “stars, stunts, surprises and so much more.” It’ll be great. When: Sept. 15 @ 10 p.m. Where: NBC Trailer: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=knVqHYSfArk 4) You, Me, and the End of the World NBC has been home to many stellar comedies. With the loss of 30 Rock (still getting over that) and Parks and Rec (too soon to talk about it), it’s safe to say that fans are having withdrawals. You, Me, and the End of the World has a pretty solid cast including Rob Lowe, Joel Fry and Megan Mullally, and a vague plot focusing around a comet headed straight for earth. It’s going
to be like that movie Armageddon, except you’re supposed to laugh. When: TBA
Where: NBC Trailer: http://www.nbc.com/ you-me-and-the-end-of-the-world 3) The Muppets What can I say? Nostalgia gets this show a slot on our list. In this Muppets revamp, we’re expected to see a more “adult” side to the beloved cast. As we learned earlier this year, Miss Piggy and Kermit called it quits on their relationship, adding fuel to the dramatic fire that this show guarantees. They’re even doing those one-on-one aside segments (a la The Office) that are used in every sitcom ever lately. When: Tuesday, Sept. 22 @ 8 p.m. Where: ABC Trailer: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=x2B5d-8H588 2) American Horror Story: Hotel Ryan Murphey, O television god, hear my prayer: Don’t make me regret putting the fifth installment of this show in the No. 2 slot on this list. In case you’ve been under a rock: American Horror Story is an anthology series following scary stories from around the United States. In the last season, which followed a freak show and had no plot, we learned that this series can become a train wreck. Hotel
looks promising. The cast includes Lady Gaga and Kathy Bates, so let’s all hope Murphey has his script planned this time. When: Oct. 7, 10 p.m. Where: FX Trailer: https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=9YTSI5LYCi0 1) Scream Queens Also directed by Ryan Murphey, this wins the award for most highly anticipated series of the season. (Well, for us, anyway.) It has been called “Heathers meets Halloween” and “Mean Girls meets Friday the 13th.” What could be better? The plot focuses on a sorority plagued by a masked killer. The slasher-flick series stars Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis, joined by a list of pop culture divas (Nick Jonas included). It’s a horrorcomedy guaranteed to be a hit. When: Sept. 22 Where: FOX (The Epic) Trailer: https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=-FtenR69qmk Take your pick and organize watching parties with your friends, or avoid the pain and trauma of choosing and just watch them all. Because be honest. You weren't going to do your homework anyway. w

IT'S GAME WEEK! Season kicks off against West Virginia on Saturday the defense, but the Eagles appear to have a wealth of talent ready to step in. The announcement two weeks ago that starting quarterback Kevin Ellison has been suspended for the first two games definitely doesn’t help the team. But Brown backup Favian Upshaw has plenty of experience and, from what the coaches are saying, the offense
lightly — so chances are, they’ll be ready. Tattler Prediction: Georgia Southern keeps it close for most of the game, but West Virginia pulls it out in the end. Mountaineers 31, Eagles 21 Now, let’s hope I’m wrong. GATA, boys! Editor's note: Just because Connect is on a biweekly schedule doesn't mean our Tailgate Tattler is! We just can't stop this guy from writing about football, so if you want to stay on top of Eagle football game recaps and Tattler Predictions, check out our website at connectstatesboro. com. Eagle Nation, we have been waiting nine months to say this: It’s game week! Georgia Southern hits the road this weekend to open the 2015 season at West Virginia. Kickoff is set for Saturday night in Morgantown at 7:30 p.m. Alex This will be the Eagles’ first meeting with a Big XII opponent. Southern opened last season on the road against another “Power 5” conference program and nearly knocked off North Carolina State in Raleigh. The Eagles were on the 1-yard line, looking to go up by 17 points in the second half, but fumbled it away and eventually lost by one point. Southern faced a second Power 5 team in Georgia Tech in Atlanta a few weeks later and probably should have won that game, too. With time winding down and the Eagles up by 3, a ruling on an option pitch that was initially called an incomplete forward pass on the field was changed to a fumble to give Tech the ball. I haven’t found anyone yet who thinks there was enough video evidence to come close to overturning the ruling on the field, but apparently the officials at Bobby Dodd Stadium did that afternoon. On the ensuing drive, Tech scored its only points of the second half with a touchdown with less than 30 seconds left to win 42-38. My point is that Georgia Southern did pretty well against Power 5 conference competition last year — and it’s not like the Eagles played a couple of slouches. Georgia Tech won the Orange Bowl and finished the season 11-3. NC State was 8-5 and won the St. Petersburg Bowl. Both should have lost to Georgia Southern. Does that mean West Virginia is on upset alert? Maybe. Other than the offensive line, Southern doesn’t have a ton of holes to fill from last season. Leading tackler Edwin Jackson is gone from
should not miss a beat while he is running the show. The Mountaineers are returning 16 starters from last season, but are also having to replace several linemen on both sides of the ball. Plus, I don’t think Georgia Southern is going to sneak up on anyone in 2015 — the Eagles may have used that luxury to their advantage last year early in the season. On one hand, I can see Georgia Southern giving the Mountaineers all they want and then some — just like the Eagles did to NC State and Georgia Tech last year. But I also like to think I’m pretty realistic, so I can see West Virginia winning this one somewhat comfortably too. It’s tough to win in Morgantown in front of that rowdy home crowd. And the Mountaineers should know they better not take the Eagles

Daniel Navarro, a longtime local performer in the Statesboro scene, is hosting a new open mic series at Eagle Creek Brewing Co. on Wednesday evenings.

Open mic nights with Daniel Navarro On Wednesday evenings, Eagle Creek Brewing Co. is the place for musicians "to meet people and hone your skills" Finally, after being encouraged by those friends and family, he got an opportunity to play his first show when he was invited by the owner of Midtown Bar and Grill. From there, Navarro built a network of people who were willing to open their doors for his music in venues across Statesboro. "My parents tell me it's natural," he said of his musical inclinations.

"I had a couple of lessons, and when the friend who was teaching me moved, I continued to practice on my own until I learned more and more." The largely self-taught musician used Travis Tritt as an example of an artist and performer who influenced
him to take the stage for the first time. Watching hours of his performances on YouTube, Navarro emulated Tritt's stage style to improve his own onstage presence. "I have a love for all kinds of music, and I love performing," Navarro said. "It fascinates me, and nothing compares to the feeling of expressing myself through music." In combination with studying the great country performers, he found that playing with people also helped him to hone his talent. According to the Statesboro performer, playing with people who are better than he is keeps him striving to get better. Along with the opportunity to get better for himself, Navarro was given an opportunity to open his own open mic night at Eagle Creek Brewery on Wednesday nights. For him, this is about more than just having another place to share his music. He expressed his understanding that there may be a lot of the same people taking the stage, but he'll be working to influence those who may be considering performing for themselves to take the stage at Eagle Creek. "Guys come to me all the time asking me how they can find a place to play, and I tell them that these open mic nights are their shot," he said. "This is the place to meet people and hone your skills." Navarro also says that Eagle Creek's open mic night will take on the venue itself, where beer lovers come to a relaxed climate in a more intimate space. He hopes for a more laid-back and less structured experience for people who want a postwork drink and a little music to chase the bubbles down. Navarro will host open mic nights on Wednesdays starting at 6 p.m.w

Daniel Navarro is no stranger to performing in Statesboro. Since picking up a guitar at age 15, he has performed locally, opened for artists and held down a residency — and now he will pioneer a new open mic night at Eagle Creek Brewing Company. Navarro started out playing songs in his bedroom with only his family and friends as an audience.

The five gentlemen from BYOG — Blake Zahnd, J.P. Treadaway, David Buck, John Wienand and Philip Pasquini, not in order — are driving all the way from Charleston, S.C., to pay a visit to Dingus Magee's on Sept. 4. They'll be bringing their own groove, and they encourage you to do the same.
Vince Garrett
Bring your own groove to BYOG's concert The jamming quintet of BYOG is just as ambiguous in their sound as they are in their name, which has no real meaning. Literally, the band's drummer J.P. Treadaway said the name has no meaning. They have even been given various names to fit their acronym, but they have not settled on the meaning of the name. Among their favorites are "Back Yard Organics" and "Blue, Yellow, Orange and Green." "It started off as 'Bring Your Own Groove,' but over time people have given us so many different versions of the abbreviation that we decided
to let the people make their own decisions as to what BYOG means," Treadaway said. Since the band's beginning in March 2013, the musicians of the group have been feeling each other out and developing their sound. They have changed bass players a few times. Since BYOG got its start, they have been travelling heavily on the east coast and are now in the process of expanding their tour to the west. Their music has always been inspired by the music of the '60s and '70s. The songs of The Allman Brothers, The Grateful Dead and Neil Young have provided the back-
ground tracks to many of the band members' childhoods. The band tries to recreate that relaxed, raw sound with every show. Most surprisingly, vocalist and guitarist David Buck mentioned John Coltrane as an influence in his guitar-playing. The band's blues influence is in their sound and also their simplicity. This is not the overkill of brass horns or heavy melodies. BYOG's easy, danceable sound is just a part of their show as their stripped-down lyrics. Their songs have much more music than lyrics, and their free form makes every show a new one. Among the stories about staying or leaving, lyrics of love and loss and
anecdotes about life on the road, their songs offer depth for people who want to peel back the onion of catchy guitar riffs, solos and booming drum and bass tones. As for their upcoming show at Dingus Magee's Sept. 4, Treadaway says that what this band offers at their shows on a regular basis is very simple. "You can expect to have more fun than you're allowed to have legally," Treadaway said. "We like to get down, keep it upbeat and keep the people dancing," Buck added. The band is set to take the stage at 10 p.m. For more information on BYOG, go to byogmusic.com.w

Trea Landon signs with Nashville publisher Statesboro artist embarks on songwriting career with Play It Again Publishing Trea Landon has made a name for himself in the Statesboro music scene, but lately he’s had his sights set on bigger and better things — boardwalks, marquees and a city skyline, to be specific. Folks around the Boro might not be seeing him for quite some time, but there’s a good chance we might hear something he has written in the near future. Landon has just signed on with Play It Again Publishing, a relatively new outfit in Nashville, Tennessee, where he is now one of five songwriters turning out music for some of country music’s biggest stars. It’s a huge step for Landon, who moved up to Nashville only a month ago, thinking he would give himself three years to see if he could make something of himself in the country music capitol before returning back to Georgia Southern University to finish his undergraduate studies. He expected a long, slow path to his music career. However, life started moving at fast-forward speed after Dallas Davidson, the president of Play It Again Publishing, who saw Landon perform at a showcase after being tipped off by a mutual acquaintance. It didn’t take long for Davidson to start courting Landon for his team of songwriters. “It’s all happening really, really, really fast — a lot faster than I ever dreamed it would be,” Landon told Connect in a phone interview. “… There’s no other place I would rather be than with Dallas Davidson.” Though most listeners may not know it, Davidson is one of the biggest names in the background of country music. He is the creative force behind hits including Trace Adkins’ “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk,” Joe Nichols’ “Gimme That Girl” and several of GSU poster boy Luke Bryan’s best-known songs: “Rain Is a
Good Thing,” “Country Girl (Shake it For Me)” and “That’s My Kind of Night,” to name a few. To date, Davidson has written about 20 songs that have claimed the No. 1 charttopping spot. “Everything he touches is gold,” Landon said. “I’m just blessed to be mentored by someone of that status.” Davidson seems pretty pleased about his new recruit, too. He wrote in a press release, "We're so excited for Trea to join the Play It Again family. ...I look forward to watching Trea continue to grow as a singersongwriter." As part of the publishing outfit, Landon will be in the backstage process rather than the spotlight himself. He will write songs, pitch them to artists and then see them through the process of critiques and revisions, working with musicians, sound engineers, artists and producers to reach a final product, which — if he’s lucky — will then go on the air. It is a much more collaborative process than Landon has ever participated in before; in the past, he has been the only authority over his songwriting. Now, he said, “You’ve pretty much got 10 people’s input on one song.” In addition to learning to function in a dynamic unit, Landon is also expanding his creative powers. Most of his songs have been written from personal experience, but now, he said, he has reached a point where he will need to project himself into narratives he has not lived through and get more imaginative in his subject material. “You can only write so many songs until you run out of ideas, if it’s about the same thing,” Landon said. And so far, most of his songs have been about small-town life in the South. Landon was born in Guyton

Trea Landon, a Claxton native who has worked in the Statesboro music circuit for the past several years, has been signed to Play It Again Publishing, a songwriting outfit based in Nashville, Tennessee.
‘It's all happening really, really fast — a lot faster than I ever dreamed it would be. ...There's no other place I would rather be than with Dallas Davidson.’ Trea Landon, singer-songwriter
and calls himself a Claxton native, and performed in the Statesboro area for about four years before moving up to the big city. “Thus far, everything I’ve written has come from self-experience and things that I like to do, from riding dirt roads, drinking beer, hanging out with good friends and chasing girls,” Landon said. Landon’s repertoire will be familiar to local fans, but for those who have not seen him perform, he has three songs on his Spotify
profile: “Better Than That,” “Waitin’ all Week” and “Shot in the Dark.” Musically, the songs have an optimistic sound, thriving on soulful guitar chords and muted percussion, full of youthful vigor already mingling with nostalgia. They sound like they would feel right at home on a country music station — which is what Landon is hoping for, as the publishing outfit is already in the process of pitching some of his other songs to artists. But while Landon is ready to throw himself wholeheartedly into the songwriting aspect, he has a bigger goal: He hopes exposure in this capacity will put him on a fast track to the stage. “Essentially, the goal here is for me to try to speed up the process of the record deal by getting a couple of cuts as a songwriter,” Landon said. One step at a time, though. Before then, Statesboro fans will hopefully hear a little slice of home coming through their car speakers, courtesy of Trea Landon’s songwriting skills.w

No school like the old school That Georgia Rhythm takes audiences on a tour of Georgia music history Brittani Howell The senior sextet of That Georgia Rhythm may look like they prefer that old-time rock 'n' roll to today's music, and that's because they do. But don't think they're upcoming show is only accessible to those who grew up in the heyday of R&B. These gentlemen will be coming to the Averitt Center for the Arts Friday, Sept. 11, to show audience members of all demographics that there really ain't no school like the old school. That Georgia Rhythm's entire setlist is taken from artists from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame, featuring heavy-hitting musicians from throughout the state's history. From beach hits to R&B, country blues to classic rock, the songs run the gamut of the musical spectrum and take audiences on a wild ride through time. There are so many great songs on the set list that we couldn't choose which ones to tell you about — so we asked That Georgia Rhythm frontman Steve Guettler to do it for us. And though it was a hard pick (because he's worked with several of the artists), here are five of his all-

Some of them were chosen for Guettler's personal connections to the music, but all have an enduring spirit that landed their artists' in the Hall of Fame to begin with. 5) "Traces of Love," Dennis Yost and the Classics IV This crooning 1969 hit is a lover's lament of a failed relationship, complete with melancholy minor chords and and a mournful saxophone. The band is credited for bringing a softer element to Southern rock, and after modest beginnings in Daytona Beach the band would go on to reach international charts through the course of its career. 4) "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy," The Tams Playful, peppy and full of joyful optimism, it's easy to see why this song was so well received in 1968.
The group did not have many charttopping hits, but "Be Young, Be Foolish, Be Happy" firmly cemented The Tams as a staple for summertime playlists and beach music favorites. 3) "Unchain My Heart," Ray Charles It would be tempting to say Ray Charles made this list "because Ray Charles," but while Ray Charles certainly needs no explanation, he certainly deserves one. Ray Charles was the first inductee to the Georgia Music Hall of Fame on Sept. 26, 1979. It's said that Ray Charles loved music like it was a woman, and "Unchain My Heart" certainly shows this: the music is simultaneously playful, flirtatious and outright lusty. (You want to talk about too hot, Bruno Mars? Let Ray Charles show you how it's done. Hot damn.) 2) "Satisfaction," Otis Redding
No, Otis Redding did not write "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" — that was The Rolling Stones. But Redding gave the song a bit more Southern-fried soul than the Brits could. He released his cover with some slightly improvised lyrics and a lively, swinging horn line — which the Stones liked so much that they adopted the horns into their own live performances of the song. 1) "Five O'Clock Somewhere," Alan Jackson This one is just pure fun. Jackson is one of the more recent inductees into the hall, and his 2003 hit is the ultimate "to heck with it" anthem, and right after Semisonic's "Closing Time" (which does not belong on this playlist), it's the best way to end... well, just about anything. "It kind of wraps up the whole evening," Guettler said. "It really ties the fun of the evening together. It's a good time."w
