Building a safer community

OUR eyes in the sky across the Tweed Coast this summer is with the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter – and you’re in safe hands. The service has been operating since 1982 and continues operations from Lismore covering Tweed Heads in the north to Nambucca Heads in the south covering a total area of 40,000 square kilometres of land and sea. Crew chief and logistics manager Roger Fry said the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service operates two Airbus N2 Dauphin Helicopters (as seen in the picture above). “We’re required to supply one of these aircraft 24/7 in accordance with the NSW Health Department contract,” he said. “The aircraft crew comprises one pilot, one Aircrew member, one NSW Ambulance Paramedic, one Local Health Department Doctor and Water Rescue Crewmember (as the mission requires).” The types of missions performed by the service are: motor vehicle collisions, farming incidents, surf rescues, lost bushwalkers. The chopper can also be called to transfer patients from regional hospitals to higher care facility hospitals, beyond that search missions are either over land or off the coast. These could be vessels at sea or missing aircraft.

“The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter is a not-for-profit subsidiary of Surf Life Saving Australia,” Mr Fry said. “We operate independent of Surf Life Saving Australia with all funds raised in our area, staying in our area to support our rescue helicopter operations. Westpac Bank are our single biggest supporter and their sponsorship is one of the longest running in corporate history. “The communities of the Tweed and northern region are also a major supporter of the service. This includes raffle purchases, event involvement and general direct financial contributions.” Mr Fry said to date the chopper has completed over 8,180 missions since it started as the Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) for the Northern Region of NSW. “Our annual operating budget if nearly $8 million, more than half of which must be raised by the communities of the Northern Region,” he said. “We start a new Health Department contract in April 2017, from a new base at Lismore Airport with a new AW139 Helicopter as part of the 10-year Health Department contract for this region.” To find out more about Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter or to make a donation visit: www.helirescue.com.au

Message from the Principal: Ian Charlton

I

established the business in 1987 and I am proud to say it is still family owned and run. In that time I have tried to play an active role in the development of the village. I have been the President of the Football Club for fifteen years and continue to sponsor the club as well as the hockey club. Myself along with the Team at First National Pottsville Beach pride ourselves on providing quality service to our Landlords, Tenants, Vendors and Buyers as well as the wider community.
