Filthy waterway needs solutions BANORA POINT resident John Sydenham has

Mr Sydenham moved to Banora Point 10 years ago and

Mr Sydenham takes regular walks around Banora following the waterways which snake through the town and connect to nearby rivers. “Throughout the past few years, I’ve seen the waterway turn into a filthy hazard, the weeds are taking over and risk clogging up the system, the smell is terrible and it’s starving out a lot of the lillie pads - which were the only things keeping the water clean,” he said. “Something needs to be done and while I know council attempted to address the issue several years ago, nothing has been done since – and I’d like to know why? “Where are the council workers to clean up this vital waterway, and what about some water testing to ensure the health of local residents is not compromised.”

and surrounding areas deteriorate – it needs to be addressed before it spreads across the whole system and out of control - and the council can’t handle it.” Mr Sydenham said he approached Tweed Shire Council for an explanation and was told council needed a boat to haul out the overgrowth of noxious weeds growing on the water’s surface. “Well I’d say buy the boat, and get in there and clean it up before it becomes too much of a hazard and clogs up the waterways, there’s already a risk of flooding and time will only make matters worse,” he said. HAVE YOUR SAY: Can you identify the weed growing on top of the Banora Point waterway? What do you think is the solution? Email editor@theweekly.net.au

called on the Tweed Shire Council to urgently clean said the region was once a beautiful place to visit. “We used to holiday up here years ago, then we moved up what he believes is an increasing environmental up here after retiring and sadly I’ve seen the waterways disaster unfolding in his local waterways.

Banora Point resident John Sydenham wants council to clean up the Banora waterways (pictured behind John), which he says has never looked worse and are verging on a natural disaster for the area.

MANAGER OF Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose for Tweed Shire Council said late last year council cleared the drain of noxious weed (largely salvinia molesta) from Greenway Drive and in the Club Banora moat.

“It also cleared the pipes discharging to the drain to ensure they could continue to do their jobs,” a statement to The Weekly said. “Council has scheduled additional work to reduce the noxious weeds in this drain for early 2016/2017.” The statement highlighted not all the vegetation in the drain is weed.

73033

Council response to water weeds “The vegetation also includes desirable species such as water lilly and water fern, which provide habitat for the Comb-crested Jacana, which nests from November to August and is listed as Vulnerable under the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act, 1995,” the statement read. “Clearing noxious weeds from drains is complex and accounts for most of Council’s maintenance budget for this drain. While salvinia can be successfully harvested, there currently is no successful control method for the underwater weed cabomba. Attempts to clear cabomba can in fact encourage its growth at the expense of the desired plants.”

Senseless waste on dam

I am a resident of Byrrill Creek. I have followed the argument about the proposed then rejected dam over the years. It seems senseless to revisit this issue after so much has already been done to show there would negligible or questionable benefit to build a dam here, in fact only permanently destroy an incredibly beautiful valley. The Clarrie Hall dam already destroyed a beautiful valley, and forever desecrated indigenous sacred sites. Why do we even question this proposal again of damming Byrrill Creek when the solution to raise the existing wall of the Clarrie Hall dam has already been found. What are the other agendas here? Why are we wasting time revisiting this issue? What creek will be the next to dam in the Tweed? Why not instead sensitively promote this beautiful Byrrill Creek area for tourism, Council already put a tourism sign on Kyogle Road and now we have a huge increase in traffic in this Byrrill Creek valley. Why not spend money on bitumen for the road around Byrrill Creek to Tyalgum then have an annual cycle race around Mt Warning. This would encourage cycling trails between villages and support the Rural Village Strategy. We must value what we have, not destroy more. Rosie Evans, Byrill Creek

Keep the old skatepark

I am the mother of kids that have for many years used the old Skate Park. Although, I love the new skate park because it looks wonderful and is a much needed addition to the old skate park, I think that the old skate park still works really well for the more experienced skaters. I would be very disappointed to see the old one go. I see absolutely no need

Speed biggest on road

I live up Braeside Drive near the corner of Kyogle Road. The problem is not the road, the problem is speed and cocky drivers thinking they can go the same speed in the wet as in the dry. The noise we get from the speed of the vehicles drives me nuts. It roars up the hill to decibel levels dangerously high (we have used a meter and it’s over 90 decibels ). It’s time that people took responsibility for their driving, their speed and the care and consideration of the damage they could do to others AND SLOW DOWN. Stop blaming the road. Stop being idiots and REDUCE the speed limit on Kyogle Road. As I know no-one will listen or act on a speed limit. I was run off the road twice and nearly hit several times pulling out of my drive , he was going 80 kms an hour in a 50 km zone. Sadly he is now deceased. When will people learn. When will sensibilities prevail. I am sick of the inconvenience of car crashes on those three corners due to morons and, or, inexperienced drivers. Why can’t the Council think of a strategy that could change the mindset of the delinquent drivers around us and the way they think and act. Libby Francis, Uki

Not another petrol station

Another service station is definitely not needed in the area. And what a pity to allow another icon in the area to be demolished. Council is slowly allowing the character of a lovely country town to be eroded away. Wendy Dubber, Terranora

Keep what’s left of our old skate park - please

I would like to support that the original skate park; or what’s left of it, stays. The new park is

great for the younger kids. But the original park is where the teenagers and youth have learnt to skate. It is also a good spot for kids beginning to learn as well. I enjoy to sit in the shade and watch my children & their friends get some outside time in a safe environment. There are not many places if any; where families can enjoy fun times without having to catch a bus or pay entry or indeed have to drive. This park brings people from all over the world. It is a shame the entire park wasn’t left alongside the new. I was truly shocked to return from overseas to see it pulled apart, what a shame. Tracey Rainford & Family, Murwillumbah

does not provide enough space for all the traffic it gets. There is a danger when 80-kilogram adults are skateboarding fast around children on scooters, and keeping the old skate park would break up the traffic and make for a safer environment that users of all age groups and abilities can share. Finally, for many of us who spent our childhood and teenage years growing up in Murwillumbah, the old skatepark is the town’s major cultural symbol. I have been skateboarding at Murwillumbah skate park since I moved directly across the road from it in the early 2000’s. I spent every afternoon there in my teenage years, and like many of the town’s youths growing up in that time, the place is something that helps me identify with and make sense of what Murwillumbah means to me. Destroying the skatepark would mean taking away a part of Murwillumbah’s history. If it is left there, it will only increase in its cultural and historical value like the old concrete ramp at the bmx track has (an internationally recognised skate spot that often features in magazines like Thrasher).

Old skatepark worth it

I was born an breed in this town. I watched the park being built and now it’s getting ripped down which I think is so sad and wrong. That park has brought so many good memories to so many people not just in this town but far and wide. Its brought so many people together with a common interest for skating and we all made lots of friends out of it. Not to mention we are all still very close. So that’s saying something. Save our park and our memories. Travis O’Neil, Murwillumbah

Tom Macpherson, Murwillumbah

Where’s the fair go for our students

We have five High Schools in our area - so where is the fair go for our school leavers? My 18-year-old daughter has the option of travelling to Brisbane or Lismore to do her TAFE study, a real kick in the pants seeing her course was once held at Murwillumbah TAFE, which is a walk away. This course costs $3000. She is not eligible for students allowance or any other government assistance because as a single parent who works two jobs, I apparently earn too much!! As there is no train line to get my daughter to Lismore, she relies on her cheap little car that needs to be maintained for the long distance travelled and petrol as well. A part time job is difficult, as work is hard to find in Murwillumbah, Coles for example, has self service registers, which minimise many casual jobs. My daughter left school with big dreams about her future, unfortunately, like her friends, she will be forced to leave our town to chase them. J Hayes, Murwillumbah

Old park not obsolete

Tony Lawrence and those who helped Murwillumbah get a new skate park did something great for the community by keeping the town up to date with contemporary skate park design. However, this does not mean that the old skate park is obsolete. There are a number of reasons for keeping the park that I would like to briefly outline below. Firstly, the old skate park functions better than many of the new ones being built today, which sadly tend to compensate for a lack of quality with cosmetic appeal. Shiny concrete, some rocks, and “plaza style” angles do not compare to the old park’s simplicity, space, and versatile obstacles. Paradoxically, a lot of the old park’s charm arose from potential imperfections turning out to be completely unique and perfect for skating. The park is well known in the broader Australian skateboarding community as one that has produced and attracted some of the country’s best skaters. Keeping the park is also practically useful. Leaving it there has to be cheaper than any alternative, and the new park

Urban and Regional Planning, Planning Institute of Australia (Graduate) submit this objection to the above DA. I believe that this is an inappropriate development for this the gateway to Murwillumbah. The proposed service station would not be an ideal location so close to the roundabout. There are five service stations along Tweed Valley Way and another one would not be good for the existing businesses. A Coles service station would remove our local dollars further away. The extra competition is not necessary. It is bad enough to come off the highway with a crematorium and the new service station, to repeat it at our gateway with funeral signs from the bridge, this proposal is not a positive entrance image. This proposal is not for the betterment or improvement of the local gateway entrance to Murwillumbah. The location is opposite the Information Center and across the road from Budd Park. This gateway location on a roundabout should be a showpiece of tourism and art. This location should cater for visitors and locals that frequent Budd Park (such as a restaurant, Club, arts center, education center, or business center). As this location is opposite the train/ bus stop it would be served better with a development that entices people into our town. Please use this site to invite people into our town and have facilities for Budd Park. Even if the site becomes office blocks/education facility that employ people that will use the park during the day would be better than a service station. South Murwillumbah businesses have been crying out for years to have the area improved and many suggestions have been put up in the past. Please listen to the locals; it is their “Place”. “Place” of importance being the gateway to our tourist/historic/Art Deco town. Robyn Lemaire, Murwillumbah

Dam wall a solution?

I was astounded by the comments made by Rosie Evans of Byrrill Creek regarding the raising of the wall of the Clarrie Hall Dam on February 18. To say that the beauty of Doon Doon Valley has already been destroyed by the construction of the Clarrie Hall Dam is not true. Is she implying that the 30 properties and the livelihoods of those people are not important and it’s ok to raise the wall just because it’s a solution? Really? Helena Duckworth Doon Doon

to demolish this. It is still a valid park for the older skaters, and it could be safer for learners and other wheel sports to utilise the new one. I fear that if you take this one away there will be a return to more dangerous street skating in public stair wells, schools and carparks as the new one does not cater to some of the tricks that the older kids want to do. I feel it would be a huge waste of tax payers money to take it away. As the old saying goes. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. I say let the old skate park remain. Eve Partland, Murwillumbah

Council votes down expense reporting and amends Women’s Service appeal

TWEED SHIRE Council has voted by Cr Longland and Cr Byrne. down a motion to reinstate funding and re-open the Tweed Valley Women’s Service (TVWS).

The motion was put forward by Mayor Katie Milne and Cr Gary Bagnall on Thursday, February 18, during the council’s ordinary committee meeting. Tweed Valley Women’s Service was advised on December 17 last year that the contract was cancelled by On Track Community Programs, meaning $580,000 in NSW State Government funding along with 13 jobs were cut prior to Christmas. The council motion noted: “the result of the funding cut forced the Tweed Valley Women’s Service after 30 years of providing safety, refuge and support to the women and children of the region; the closure of this vital service leaves a devastating gap in services for victims of domestic violence in the Tweed Shire”. The motion included that Mayor Milne should write to the NSW Coalition State Government to “immediately restore State Government funding to the Tweed Valley Women’s Service to enable them to reopen and operate these vital services to the same or greater capacity as previously provided, and to assist with negotiations to resolve any legitimate concerns about their contract”. Intitially Mayor Milne had the vote. However, Cr Carolyn Byrne and Cr Warren Polglase proposed (amendment 1) that the Mayor should write to OTCP requesting clarification on how all services previously provided by TVWS will be provided within the Tweed Shire. This resulting vote on amendment 1 was split with Cr Byrne, Cr Polglase, Cr Youngblutt for the motion, and Cr Longland, Cr Bagnall, Cr Milne against. Amendment 1 was lost on the casting vote of Mayor Milne. However, amendment 2 was put forward

It resolved that the matter be deferred to a council workshop to evaluate submissions from the TVWS, On Track Community Programs and the NSW Department of Family and Community Services (FACS) and develop a more considered position to put to the council. Amendment 2 noted the Mayor should immediately write to the Minister for FACS seeking an explanation of the sudden removal of funding to the Tweed Valley Women’s Services and to seek assurance that funding for domestic and family violence services in the Tweed be maintained at the number and variety of services of that provided by the Tweed Valley Women’s Services. Cr Youngblutt and Cr Byrne called for a vote on amendment 2 becoming the resolution. A final vote resulted in four votes for amendment 2 (Cr Longland, Cr Byrne, Cr Polglase and Cr Youngblutt) and two votes against from Cr Bagnall and Mayor Milne. Amendment 2 was carried. Petitions recieved: Council received two petiitions during last Thursday’s ordinary meeting The first petition contained 51 signatures from the ratepayers and residents of McLeod Street, Condong plus three additional supporting letters advising: “We the Residents are asking that the speed limit travelling north on Tweed Valley Way approaching Cane Road, be reduced from 80km/h to 60km/h and remain at 60km/h until past Clothiers Creek Road. “We also request that the speed limit travelling south on Tweed Valley Way towards Murwillumbah be reduced to 60km/h approaching Clothiers Ck Rd,” it read. The letter said that while waiting at the intersections of both Clothiers Ck and Cane Rd the traffic on Tweed Valley Way

was accelerating making entry from these side roads difficult. The second petition, relating to the Black Rock sport oval, was addressed to Councillor Barry Longland from “the people of Uki” containing 32,208 online signed and 1,747 local handwritten signatures totalling 33,955. “As the petition is addressed personally to Cr Barry Longland it will be provided to him for his information,” the council documents read. READ MORE: Cr Longland has provided his views on the petition and a possible motion in The Weekly this week.

Street renaming: Rivendell Drive Rivendell Drive, Tweed Heads South Cr Polglase and Cr Youngblutt resolved that council publicises its intention to formally name the street known as “Rivendell” as “Rivendell Drive” allowing one month for submissions and objections to the name; and notifies the relevant authorities under the provisions of the Roads (General) Regulation 2008. The motion was carried after a unanimous vote.

Council donations from Oct-Dec 2015 Council received a total of $38,854.24 from in kind and real donations during the months of October to December 2015. The motion was carried by all. Rail Trail: Benefits of funding alternative options other than the Rail Trail. Mayor Milne and Cr Bagnall proposed that council consider the $13 million in public funds required to establish the Rail Trail from

Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, and the $275,000 allocated from ratepayer funds for the Rail Trail in the Council budget. Further notes on the motion included that the Tweed Coast Cycle Way already provides a tourist cycling attraction and also has the benefit of enhancing community transport connections, as well as noting the limited community transport connections provided by the Rail Trail to Crabbes Creek. Cr Milne and Cr Bagnall highlighted the attractions already currently benefiting Murwillumbah including the 100,000 visitors per annum and the The Art Gallery and Margaret Olley Art Centre and Murwillumbah Museumm as just a few. The motion was lost with against votes from Cr Longland, Cr Byrne, Cr Polglase, Cr Youngblutt. Those voting for were Cr Bagnall and Cr Milne.

Council expense options voted down The mayor and Cr Bagnall lost a motion to include councillors’ monthly expenses claims in the Council Business papers to “enhance transparency and accountability”. Prior to a vote an amendment 1 was raised by Cr Byrne and Cr Youngblutt who proposed the matter be deferred to a workshop in which to formulate a template for the reporting of Councillors monthly expenses claims - Amendment 1 was lost after the for vote only came from Cr Polglase and Cr Youngblutt. In the final vote for the original motion of including expenses in council business papers, was two for including Cr Bagnall and Mayor Milne and the motion was lost.

Local referendum needed on Black Rocks field

TWEED SHIRE Councillor Barry Longland has

responded to critisicm about the Black Rocks sportsfield and he’s calling for a solution to end the debate - once and for all.

It was during last Thursday’s (February 18) council meeting, Cr Longland was presented with a petition. “The petitions contained 33,000 entries directed, not to the council, but to me personally, requesting that I move to close off access and revegetate the Black Rocks Sportsfield,” Cr Longland said. “The petition was via an on-line production based in the US where 98.5 per cent of respondents lived outside Australia (mainly from Europe and North America) and of the remaining 1.5 per cent of signatories, only 20 per cent were from the Tweed Shire with only 1 per cent of those living in the Pottsville area. “This equates to around nine respondents actually from Pottsville which is the community that will be most affected by the loss of their public open space. “While the numbers involved sound impressive, the petition, in no way, reflects the local view about a future for the Black Rocks Sportsfield. The principal protagonist who spearheads the campaign lives in the street adjacent to the fields and, since his arrival in around 2010, I believe he has pursued the removal of people from their recreational space as his sole objective. “Prior to his arrival in the Tweed, the good people of the lower Tweed coast lived in complete harmony with the koalas that moved into the re-growth area around the fields which formerly comprised open grazing country. “While this man is quick to use koala protection as his reason to achieve his objective, the facts don’t support that proposition.” Cr Longland said a Tweed Coast koala habitat study completed in late 2015 made comparisons of koala activity over a five year period from an earlier study in 2010. “The Black Rocks precinct was one of the few where it was identified that koala numbers were relatively stable (notwithstanding the bushfire), unlike some areas to the north where populations were in decline. “This was in a period when this man bombarded councillors and council staff with dire claims of imminent extinction for the koalas of the Black Rocks precinct,” Cr Longland said. “When I proposed the replacement of the locked gate with a koala grid, it was only after consultation with a known koala expert.

Just before Christmas last year On Track Community Services, the lead agency from which TVWS got its funding, cancelled its contract. Overnight, the majority of its funding had disappeared. No mediation. Grounds not made public. Just before Christmas. On a multitude of levels – this was an act of extreme bastardry. Women in extreme need had support services interrupted and, in some cases, may have been put at risk. 13 skilled, experienced community workers lost their jobs.

Haven Bar to re-open this weekend LOCAL BUSINESSES and residents have rallied

behind the Haven Bar and Restaurant as the popular venue prepares to re-open on Friday, February 26.

On Track was very much “Off Track”. At the last Council meeting a move by Crs Milne & Bagnall to write to the NSW government to seek reinstatement of TVWS funding was rejected by 4 - 2. Instead, they agreed to hold a workshop. Council meetings are governed by the Councillor Code of Conduct and a Code of Meeting Practice. Until now members of the public could take pictures in the Council Chamber. Quoting the Workplace Surveillance Act, Cr Byrne introduced changes that banned taking pictures of any Council “employee” in any “workplace”, including Council meetings. Various accusations were thrown around about who had photographed whom and when. Cr Milne threw a cat among the pigeons by suggesting that Council tape its meetings and broadcast them on the internet like Byron Shire does. This was defeated, even though Councillors voted a few years ago to allow a “reality” TV show to film a pilot series in their meetings. Councillors could not agree on: • Fingal Holiday Park Fees and Charges for 2016-17 • Buying a truck.Go figure.

According to widespread reports and social media, the closure was due to private matters, but has also coincided with the sudden closure of the Imperial Hotel and Roundhouse Tavern. Haven Bar is still managed by Australian Radio Towers owner Andrew Price. However, heading day-to-day operations from the reopening will be new team members Charlie Sleeman www.tweedvalleyweekly.net.au

and Jamie Dowling. Haven employee Kacey Clifford said the bar would return to its original Thursday-Sunday trading hours, with the potential for Monday jam nights in the future. She said other local pubs, including the Courthouse Hotel, Riverview Tavern and Tyalgum Hotel had offered the business advice and expertise. “They didn’t need to, but they’ve just been really helpful,” she said. Mr Sleeman said live music would remain high on the agenda for Haven - which had been a previous hit for locals.

Malcolm Turnbull and The Nationals still have plans to raise the GST to 15% and put it on everything. This will cost Australian households up to $4000 a year! People who can least aff ord it will be hit the hardest.

Labor opposes increasing the GST. Working together we can stop Malcolm Turnbull and The Nationals’ unfair increases to the GST.

The People You Meet... with Fran Rabbitts FOR BOOK lovers, hoarders and aspiring authors the ‘Pulp Fiction’ book shop is a must. It’s opposite the Murwillumbah Railway in an old 1940s bungalow - a survivor of many floods and now rebirthed as a funky

bookshop attracting dedicated book lovers from far and wide. Its position ensures it’s never empty.

Angela Pereira was born in Murwillumbah, her parents were both councillors who were well read and encouraged her love of books from the age of five. Like many, over time her book collection grew and she decided to open a book stall at the local markets. She cleared her overflowing wardrobe of colourful and often ethnic clothes and sold those too. The trial was a success, she sold lots, it was fun and she enjoyed the social side of meeting and mixing with interesting market stall owners. After a couple of years she became well known for her books and vintage clothing, it was time to establish a base and in 2012 she opened ‘Pulp Fiction.’ Inside there is a labyrinth of small rooms

that are packed to the rafters with books, with many out- of-print books that can be found and new buyers soon become regulars. When exploring the tiny rooms expect surprises because scattered among the books are vintage clothes from the 1940s. Adding to this are life-sized mermaids propped next to bookshelves and antique comfortable chairs -an invitation to stay, read and adopt a book. It’s a nurturing and friendly atmosphere where total strangers share ideas, knowledge and enthusiasm. It may appear random but Angela knows where every book and classification is in her collection and has an incredible memory. She said, “Many come looking for a specific genre and for me the first thing I want to know is what they’re reading, I often find that book choices indicate personalities. For instance I’ve a regular

buyer always looking for Jane Eyre and Agatha Christie books. It’s interesting over time to note regular’s choice progress. ‘It’s all really about celebrating difference and diversity and acknowledging their eccentricities, because life is passion. We should live our dreams even if it’s vicariously and through books and imagination because life is too fleeting.” But it’s more than just a quirky bookshop, it’s an information source for local and aspiring authors needing experienced mentors, and there’s a special section for successful local published authors. Our vibrant Tweed community is an eclectic blend of conservatives and alternatives with so many stories to tell and ‘Pulp Fiction’ is a good starting point. To find out more visit Pulp Fiction at 309 Tweed Valley Way, Murwillumbah or phone 0403 169 616.

Get ready for racing at local Jockey Club RACING RETURNS to Murwillumbah on Tuesday,

March 8 for an early-spring meeting at the little track among the cane fields. Tweed River Jockey Club Secretary Manager Brian Charman said after a successful summer program, which saw the club host three meetings in the space of three weeks, the racing surface has enjoyed a well earned breather. “Recent light rains have brought out the best in the track which has received 7mm in the past week and is currently rated a Good 3,” he said. “Longer-term weather forecasts indicate a mainly sunny but mixed bag of conditions in the fortnight to race day. “Tuesday week’s meeting will feature a seven event card, full TAB program and an array of local small business sponsors. Popular local band Fat Albert will be playing live from 1pm.” For more information contact the Tweed River Jockey Club: Note: attached image is of the 11 December, 2015 feature event as the starter lets them go in the 1530m Just Cuts Tweed City Cup - the winner is out of the number 1 alley, I’ll Miss You (trained, Julie Pratten at Ballina; ridden Scott Galloway).

Heartburn heartache HEARTBURN (gastro-oesophageal reflux or indigestion) is very common. Most of us will experience heartburn at some point – whether it’s after a big meal, from undertaking strenuous activity too soon after eating, as a symptom of pregnancy, or from eating and drinking too much. Heartburn is also one of the symptoms of peptic ulcer disease. Heartburn is caused by the contents of the stomach coming back up into the oesophagus (the ‘food pipe’), resulting in a burning sensation in the chest or throat. As the stomach contents are mixed with stomach acid, digestive enzymes and chemicals, the regurgitation or backwash causes a burning feeling. This is generally described by reflux sufferers as beginning in the stomach or lower chest and moving upwards behind the breastbone towards the neck or throat. Persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is referred to as gastrooesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and can eventually lead to more serious health problems. People of all ages can have GORD, which is considered a chronic disease, like asthma or high blood pressure, and therefore ongoing treatment and management is usually necessary. Three types of medicines are available in Australia to treat the symptoms of heartburn and reflux. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about the best medicine for you and your symptoms, particularly if are taking any medicines for other conditions. In the case of heartburn, antacids may have an effect on other medicines you may be taking.

If you only suffer from the occasional episode of heartburn, or your symptoms are mild, over-the-counter (OTC) antacids available at your pharmacy may provide symptomatic relief. Antacids act to relieve heartburn by neutralising stomach acid. These medicines are available as tablets or liquids, and should be taken when symptoms occur. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you are still experiencing heartburn or other reflux symptoms even when taking antacids, and mention that you are not getting any relief. They may be able to suggest an alternative medicine. If you experience occasional, but regular, heartburn symptoms you may benefit from an H2-receptor antagonist. These medicines partially inhibit the secretion of acid in the stomach by blocking histamine receptors. Because less acid is being produced, you experience fewer symptoms. Some of these medicines are available without a prescription. Seek further advice from your doctor or pharmacist if you are not getting relief from an H2-receptor antagonist when taking it as instructed. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce stomach acid by blocking acid-secreting cells. They provide more effective acid suppression than H2-receptor antagonists – relieving symptoms and allowing inflammation on the oesophagus to heal. Some PPIs can be purchased from a pharmacy OTC for short-term use, but most are only available on prescription. www.tweedvalleyweekly.net.au

A visit to the goregous little town call Tyalgum THE WEEKLY visited the beautiful

little town of Tyalgum this week, 22km from Murwillumbah and at the foot of Mt Warning.

It’s starting to

Warm Up!

Tyalgum is situated at the junction of Pumpenbil and Tyalgum Creeks, which provide Tyalgum with its water supply and when the village was first settled, the settlers would have used the waterways to transport the giant red cedars that they felled. Another major natural feature is the valley environment around the village created by the Border Ranges and Mount Warning. Some of the most important manmade features in Tyalgum are Flutterbies Cafe (home of the famous Flutterbie Cakes), The Little Shop Next Door, Tyalgum Store (see photo) established in 1907, the Tyalgum Hall - home of the annual Classical Musical Festival – and The Tyalgum Garage located in the old Norco Dairy Building. Tyalgum is temperate. It has a mean annual temperate of 18.9 °C. The rainfall is generally high with an annual mean of 1,555.4 millimetres most of which occurs during the summer months. For the last

few years the region has been suffering from drought. Tyalgum is unlike any other small town, its close knit community, quirky shops and markets have made it a must see destination for locals and it’s fast becoming a tourism draw card. There are few people more passionate about the town than Solar Chappel. Solar helps operate much of the town’s entertainment through his agency Hearts Aflame. Recent acts have included Tom Daley and coming soon is winner of the 2015 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition, Ayesha Gough and 2015 Brisbane Club Award finalist, soprano Petah Chapman who will perform an intimate afternoon concert at Flutterbies Cottage Café in Tyalgum on Saturday, March 12.

Refugee Welcome Zone official after screening APPROXIMATELY 200 people have welcomed

Tweed Shire’s declaration as a Refugee Welcome Zone, by attending a recent free movie screening in Murwillumbah.

“It was really heart-warming to see so many people fill the Regent Cinema to support the initiative,” the Chair of the Refugee Council of Australia, Sonia Caton, told the event. “One of our big initiatives to achieve social cohesion is to get councils on board through this program,” Ms Caton said. She said this backing was “absolutely critical” because it created a level of community support that was impossible for governments to ignore. Tweed Shire Council joined a number of local governments, including Lismore City, Coffs Harbour City and Port Macquarie-Hastings councils, in aligning with the Refugee Council of Australia initiative. Tweed Shire Council resolved in September 2015 to join the program.

Sunday’s ceremony featured the screening of the feature-length film Mary Meets Mohammad, which tells the story of Tasmania’s first detention centre and the bond that formed between local Christian woman Mary and Muslim Afghan Hazara asylum seeker Mohammad. A DVD copy of the film is now available to borrow from the Richmond Tweed Regional Library, to give more residents a chance to watch the documentary. Tweed Mayor Councillor Katie Milne said she was extremely pleased the Tweed councillors resolved unanimously to declare the Tweed a Refugee Welcome Zone, sending a strong and symbolic message. Cr Milne, who signed the declaration aligning Tweed Shire to the program, was unable to attend Sunday’s ceremony but had a prepared speech read to the crowd. Cr Barry Longland, who read the speech and who initiated Tweed Shire’s move to join the program, said multiculturalism enriches a community and should be embraced. “It’s no secret the issue of asylum seekers does create

divisions in our society,” he told the ceremony. “The program is about the positive things that can happen at the shire and village level and the positive things for people coming to our area.” The matinee film screen was addressed by an Afghan refugee who arrived with his family in Australia in 2012 and was still waiting for his application for residency to be processed. “We are just grateful to be here because we are still alive. If we had not made the decision to come to this country, we would be dead by now,” he said. The crowd was told he and his family had been targeted by terrorists in Afghanistan and death had become part of his daily life, as people he knew were killed by insurgents. After being targeted, he had no choice but to escape his country. His family travelled for six days aboard vessel that nearly sank in the middle of the ocean, until the boat and its passengers were rescued by a commercial ship. “You would not want anyone to go through a journey like that unless it was really necessary to stay alive,” he said.

End of fixed solar rebate coming IN DECEMBER this year, thousands of people who pioneered solar will be in for a shock.

The amount they receive for solar power will fall by up to 90 per cent but worse still they will not be able to credit the power they produce against the power they use. The result will be an unwelcome return of large power bills. “When the NSW scheme was first introduced the cost of solar panels was still high but a guaranteed gross feed in tariff was a game changer,” Eddie Roberts (pictured right), an original participant said. “You have to remember that power prices had been rising steeply for years. Around 9000 homes in the northern rivers area took the plunge for a chance to cut their bills. Even churches and schools bought in.” “But then there was a change in the state government and they tried to renege on the fixed tariff. “There was a huge uproar so instead they closed the scheme to new applicants and limited its operation to the end of 2016.” Today, solar panels are a lot cheaper due in no small part to feed in tariff schemes that stimulated mass production.

The problem for the early adopters is that under the current rules their gross feed in meters will not allow the solar power they produce to be subtracted from the power they use. They will have to pay about five times more for the power they use than for the solar power they make. One option is to install a Net Feed-In meter or Smart meter but there is likely to be a shortage of meters and qualified technicians when 146,000 households state wide are trying to change over at the end of this year. “I am looking seriously into battery storage,” Eddie Roberts said. “Even with a net meter most of my solar power will be going for peanuts and I will have to pay full rates for night time power. There are new options on the market now. Some are looking pretty attractive and I will have to make some choices soon.” Tweed Climate Action Now is organising information seminars this year on options for people losing the gross solar rebate and on some of the new battery technologies. More information about net meters, seminars, batteries and other options can be found at www. tweedcan.org.au/Gross Feed-In .

Labor Shadow Treasurer Chris Shame of it all Bowen visits Tweed for talks

LOCAL PSYCHOLOGIST Hanna Thomas wrote

FEDERAL Shadow Treasurer Chris Bowen met with a group of 50 impassioned Tweed locals on Friday, February 19, to discuss economics and the GST.

Shadow Treasurer Bowen fielded a range of questions on pension plans, disability support and the on-again off-again approach the Turnbull Government has taken with the GST increase. “We’ve fought the fight on the GST, but there are some things that are in a political parties’ DNA, for us it’s education and health – for the Liberals it’s the GST and they’re proud of it, we’re proud of our accomplishments in the past we’re proud of Medicare, superannuation and the age pension – we’re proud of those things. Ask a Liberal what they’re proud of, and they’ll say ‘the GST’,” he said. Mr Bowen spoke about Labor’s proposal to eliminate negative gearing on new homes in a bid to raise much needed funds for programs such as the NDIS, education and health expenditure, while keeping the economy on track. “Yes Labor’s plan is to eliminate negative gearing on new homes, however the vast majority of negatively geared properties currently provide a tax haven for the rich, and I don’t see how this policy would impact those low income earners that achieve no benefit from negative gearing in the first place,” he said. Mr Bowen spoke highly of Federal Richmond MP Justine Elliot, of whom he said was one of the hardest working and most

respected members of parliament. “I cannot speak more highly of Justine and her efforts across both her electorate and the country, she is amongst the hardest working members and she is driven towards the best outcomes for the locals,” he said. Those in the audience did not hold back on Mr Bowen calling for him to take a tough approach. “We are making the tough decisions, what about the government when are we going to see their plans for the country, we still haven’t seen

anything, where is the plan?” he said. Mrs Elliot MP thanked Mr Bowen for his visit and invited him back soon. “I’d like to thank Chris for coming up and speaking to the community on these important issues and hope we can help support the government towards re-election this year,” she said. YOUR THOUGHTS: Which do you think is best for the country: halts to negative gearing or an increase in GST? Email your thoughts to e d i t o r @ t h e w e e k l y. n e t . a u

Questions were directed to Mr Bowen during a 40 minute Q&A in which topics such as aged care, the GST and the NDIS were discussed.

Hands up if you know a great High School

Dr Thomas said she was shocked to hear of the closure of the Tweed Valley Women’s Service (TVWS) after OTCP decided to terminate their contract prior to Christmas, 2015. “Since then I have attended two rallies and joined Women’s Watch - a group of volunteers who meet weekly with the aim of raising awareness about the issues leading to the forced closure of TVWS and to harness support to have the 5-day a week centre reopened in Murwillumbah, along with the suite of services they provided,” she said. “Women in physical, emotional and mentally abusive relationships need a safe place where they can visit and talk to a supportive and qualified person who understands what she is going through.” Dr Thomas said by focussing on prevention and early intervention (and not just crisis support) these services were not only cost effective. “They helped to minimise the personal, long term effects of abuse for women and their children,” she said. “Now, for a woman to obtain support for domestic violence, she must phone the North Coast Homelessness Alliance who then have to establish if she is either homeless or at risk of homelessness. “Not only is this confusing, a woman shouldn’t have to wait until her situation is desperate enough that she is risk of being homeless before she can even get the minimal support that now exists with the closure of TVWS. “It’s shameful that these services were closed when we know how prevalent domestic violence is and the impact it has on women and their families. “It’s shameful that TVWS was forced to close just before Christmas at a time when domestic assaults increase where was the duty of care? “It’s shameful the way in which the women’s centre workers were treated during the closure.” Dr Thomas said the women and their families of the community deserve to have the centre re-opened 5 days a week. “They deserve a safe and supportive place for them to start, or to continue, the challenging journey of breaking the cycle of domestic violence,” she said. Robyn Pluis

your

Real Estate

Robyn’s your agent of the week I HAVE been in real estate in Wollumbin Street Murwillumbah my whole working life, so have had the benefit of experiencing both the booms and troughs in the Tweed market. Wal Murray & Co was my first employer and then a new owner operated the business under the First National banner. I’m proud to say I now own Murwillumbah Real Estate and it is a completely independent agency. Importantly though, the office is still in the heart of Wollumbin Street. Murwillumbah has always been my home and the community here is important to me. How lucky we are to have good education choices and opportunities, great sporting activities , a flourishing arts scene and an idyllic climate. I particularly love the diversity of the Tweed Valley terrain and the lifestyle options we can offer clients. Small acreage farms, hilltop retreats, village homes or units and houses within the town precinct are all available to be purchased Recently I sold a quality property, with small acreage

with mountain views and a beautifully restored home. Why was this sale so rewarding? The client was someone who had trusted me to negotiate the sale of a number of her properties over the years and the buyers were returning to the Tweed after many years of absence. Those coming to the market now will find they will have to compete with buyers not only from the Gold Coast and Brisbane but Sydney and beyond. Listings are scarce so if you are intending to sell you should take advantage of the opportunities now. A pleasantly presented home or property is important to attract a buyer but timing of your sale is just as crucial. Choose an agent with loads of market experience, a record of customer service and willingness to consider the needs of both client and purchaser. To meet with Robyn and find out more about Murwillumbah Real Estate phone (02) 66722455 or you can drop by the office at 27 Wollumbin Street, Murwillumbah.

Most affordable place to buy a home on the Tweed COMMUNITY HOUSING provider

Horizon Housing and the Tweed Shire Council unveiled an innovative joint housing project on Wednesday, February 24 as part of the new Hundred Hills Estate. The unveiling and showcase to partners included a walkthrough of the first completed house in the 52 home development which is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. The Reserve at Hundred Hills offers house and land packages at affordable values for the area, with some blocks selling for as little as $165,000 to eligible buyers with their own finance. The innovation is that the housing project provides a new mortgage financing option that allows eligible home buyers to defer 25 per cent of their mortgage until they sell their property through Horizon’s partnership with Bank Australia. Speaking with The Weekly Real Estate Horizon Housing CEO Jason Cubit said the provider has sold 25 of the 30 properties in total, with 5 yet to be released. “We have a wide variety of different buyers so far, but we’re targeting working families on moderate incomes who are looking to buy their first property or to move to the region. These homes are for owner occupiers, not investors,” he said. The remaining properties in the project at The Reserve in the Hundred Hills estate will be available to eligible residents at

discounted rental rates to be managed directly by Horizon Housing. The concept village is the result of four partnerships and two innovative approaches to break down barriers to home ownership. Originally planned to help relieve local housing stress in the Tweed region, the village commenced as a partnership between Horizon Housing and the Tweed Shire Council but evolved into much more as Horizon worked with its other partners to maximise the potential of the development. Mr Cubit said the project has not only helped Tweed Shire locals break into the housing market and conquer housing stress, but stands as an example for other Australian governments and communities. “This innovative joint housing project showcases two affordable housing initiatives which will help individuals and families on low to moderate incomes to break into the market and stand on their own financial feet,” Mr Cubit said. “Horizon Housing worked with the support of Tweed Shire Council, The Commonwealth Government, Stockland and Bank Australia to develop the range of housing options available in the village.” The $8.36 million partnership between Horizon Housing and Tweed Shire Council was funded via the Federal Government’s Building Better Regional Cities programme to help reduce the cost of building local infrastructure and provide more accessible

housing to low and middle income Australians. “We are thrilled to be showcasing the new project to Tweed Shire Mayor, Cr Katie Milne which demonstrates innovative approaches to getting people into affordable housing, taking pressure off first homebuyers and making the Tweed a more attractive place to live and raise a family,” said Mr Cubit. Interested buyers can contact the Stocklands Sales office at Hundred Hills; people interested in renting can apply online at www.horizonhousing.com.au . The Weekly asked Mr Cubit several further questions below: 1. When will the properties be housed? The first one for rent has just been completed. One more in the coming weeks, and the remainder will all be finished before the end of the year. 2. How many properties are still available for sale and rent? We have five properties to be released for sale (not on the market yet) and 22 properties will be available for rent. 3. What are the demographics, who are likely to buy or rent these properties? We have a wide variety of different buyers so far, but we’re targeting working families on moderate incomes who are looking to buy their first property or to move to the region. These homes are for owner occupiers, not investors.

4. Is the application quota for these properties full? We have sold 25 of the 30 properties we’re selling, with 5 yet to be released. We haven’t filled our rental properties yet, but it won’t take long. 5. If not, how can people apply to buy or rent in this village? Interested buyers can contact the Stocklands Sales office at Hundred Hills; people interested in renting can apply online at www.horizonhousing.com.au . 6. When will the total 52 houses be complete? Before the end of the year. 7. What is public transport like for this location? There are bus services nearby on Kyogle Road provided by Surfside Buslines http://www.surfside. com.au/ For more information about Horizon Housing and how they are helping people into accommodation and the housing market, visit www. horizonhousing.com.au.

Have you heard about Bilambil Heights - it’s a winner BILAMBIL HEIGHTS is certainly a gem on the Tweed and not just for affordability.

The small town provides stunning views across the Terranora Broadwater to the coast and is an ideal place to settle or invest. The area has historically been a popular location for families, while providing easy access to the highway, Tweed Heads and the Gold Coast. Recent interest in the area has prompted a rush on large family homes, where buyers are able to purchase a home with considerable space while not breaking the bank. Much of the bush setting and native wildlife is retained across Bilambil Heights, which is again an attractive draw card to avoid the hustle and bustle of the cities. There are also a number of dual living options available, where owners/occupiers can easily find space for another family on the lower or upper levels, again reducing costs and creating an income. It’s interesting to note that Bilambil Heights is below the NSW median house price, while still gaining a median rental return of $460. Oh what a feeling - it’s Surf Toyota IF YOU’RE in the market for a new or

used car Surf Toyota Tweed Heads is a must visit.

The team at Surf Toyota has been proudly serving the Northern Rivers, Tweed and Gold Coast since 2000. The site completed a major renovation 12 months ago and now has a ‘state of the art’ service and sales facility. Locals and visitors are encouraged to drop by and visit the site to experience a whole new level of customer service. Sales executives Leon Geldenhuys, Darren Brown, John Vahter and Todd Dark are ready to make your next dream car a reality. “There’s plenty of reasons to come down and check out our showroom for new and used Toyotas,” Leon said. Among the top sellers is the latest Corolla Hatch which is bolder, sportier and more fun than ever before. The Corolla is more spacious, more comfortable and more entertaining, yet still boasts the same tried and tested reliability you expect in the world’s bestselling car. “Every Corolla looks sharp with matching body colour bumpers front and rear complemented by the gleaming presence of a chrome grille to lead the way,” Leon said. If something sportier and performance based takes your fancy, look no further than

the Toyota GT 86, which drives and handles as well as it looks without the Ferrari price tag. Todd said the Toyota GT 86 was among the best sports cars in the market for the price. “There’s the fully optioned version, with a 2litre engine and six speed manual (or auto) and it’s an amazing driving experience,” he said. “I’d encourage anyone wanting to find out more about the 86 to visit Surf Toyota and have a test drive - you won’t be disappointed.” There’s something with everyone at Surf Toyota and if it’s a reliable workhorse you’re after take a look at the all new Toyota HiLux – which is still the toughest vehicle on the market. Darren said the Hilux has a total of 31 different variants available. “There is basically a HiLux for every occasion in the new range,” he said. “From tool-of-trade vehicles to chromeladen show cars and family runabouts, the spread is generous for 2016 across the selection of three model grades (rough-andtumble Workmate, mid-spec SR and topgrade SR5), and three body styles (single cab, extra cab and double cab with either cab chassis or pick-up traybacks).” To find out more visit Surf Toyota at 64/74 Minjungbal Dr, Tweed Heads South or phone (07) 5523 8000.

Relay for Life reveals music line up WE HAVE all seen their faces around

our shire ‘Billy And The Kid’ but now we will see them as major entertainment alongside Tara Williams Music at Tweed Valley Relay for Life to be held Saturday March 12 at Merv Edwards Fields, Kingscliff.

Billy And The Kid (pictured below) and Tara Williams Music have stepped up to support the Relay For Life this year, and with under 30 days they are calling on the wider community to do the same and support this wonderful community driven fundraiser. “ Relay is a wonderful community fundraiser, and the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to make this happen are incredibly passionate about making a difference in the fight against cancer in our community. We have all been touched by cancer in some way!...ALL of us...” said Louise – one half of Billy and the kidd. In 2015, Tweed Valley Relay For Life saw more than 600 people flood Merv Edwards Fields in Kingscliff. This year the committee is hoping for the same number to help achieve their fundraising goal of

$86,000 towards Cancer Council research and support services, such as Legal and Financial support. A service providing emergency assistance to people who are affected by cancer and are financially disadvantaged. Financial assistance is provided in the form of bill payments, household expenses and emergency fuel & food vouchers. For example a $250 grant can make a difference between having your electricity staying connected that quarter or not. Tweed Valley Relay For Life 2014 will see more information booths and focus on prevention and healthy lifestyle choices by creating a market style atmosphere with many teams fundraising and camping on the day. With so much variety on offer for adults and children alike, live bands, and more, the event is also a great day out for the family for people outside of Relay teams. Register a team today and help the Relay For Life make a difference in your local community by visiting relayforlife.org.au/tweed or contact the local Cancer Council office on 02 6639 1304.

Preventive health

Action Group hosted a forum on Wednesday, February 24, calling for a greater focus on preventative drug and health education in the local area. The group, led by local bus driver and community campaigner Tonny van’t Riet, supports the work of Life Education NSW, an organisation which aims to create a safer future for Australian children by giving them with the information, skills and self-esteem they need to make healthier life choices.

Bureau of Crime Statistics data shows the number of arrests for amphetamine possession or use, including offences related to ICE has increased by nearly 50 per cent in Richmond and Tweed areas. Drug-related incidents in schools are also increasing in the area, rising from 2.4 per 100,000 population to 5.2 in recent years. “We can’t do this without your help. Our volunteers are critical to our work in the area, to fundraise and advocate for a safer future for our children.” For more information contact Jenny Unwin 0418 723 908.

local Sounds with Nick Artist: Lil’Fi Album: PEOPLE GET READY

WITH MUSICAL direction from local

virtuoso Steve Russell this is Lil’Fi’s best album to date. This is saying a lot as she has had a long career and recorded many albums. People Get Ready is a departure for Lil’Fi – she has found a more rootsy gospel sound with this album. She has never been in better voice than on this great collection of covers and originals. The album opens with the classic Curtis Mayfield song and the title track, People Get Ready. The musical direction from Russell is tasty and authentic, with a great Ray Charles sounding piano, played by Russell himself, who is widely regarded as one of the best keyboard players in Australia and who plays with the like of James Morrison. Lil’Fi whispers and caresses the lyrics with a soft and gentle approach, there is real devotion in her pipes, for both the music and the message. When the band comes in there is a laid back relaxed feel, on a solid foundation of real musical talent, including Thierry Fossemaile and Murwillumbah blues man “Scrubby Pete Hurcombe”, who also plays under the moniker Blind Willy Wagtail. He is a brilliant slide guitarist with an original touch. No doubt the musicians would have been lining up to play on this album with Lil’Fi. She is highly respected and a great local talent – again a testament to the world class talent to be found in the rainbow region. The second track Joy Joy Joy, is an original from Lil’Fi, and here

you can hear that she really has found a joy and happiness and that it is highly infectious – I found myself smiling along to this music. As the album progresses it is evident that this is a devotional album, Lil’Fi has found Jesus, and she is joyful and excited about this discovery. This album is a celebration of top shelf musicianship. Some wonderful Saxophone from Martha Baartz, another world class local brings a taste of New Orleans to this gospel album. This is clearly gospel, more than Lil’Fi’s old terrain of the blues, old school gospel, nice and gritty, and Lil’Fi’s vocals swoop from a whisper to a growl effortlessly. Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s song, Two Little Fishes is given a bluesy shuffle that reinvents this old classic with Russell leaving lots of room for the musicians to play and shine. Lil’Fi has always wanted to play and record with musicians who can shine along side her. This is one of her great strengths, she shines like a brilliant star, but there is room in her heaven for others to shine as brightly, and here, on this album, they do. This is a modern classic. Murwillumbah Theatre Company presents:

at Stokers Siding Hall on Saturday, February 27, when Round Mountain Girls bring a top class line-up to the stunning little village. Jack O’Leary, just returned from the Illawarra Folk Festival, received rave reviews for his ‘mesmerising’ delivery of folk tunes and will open proceedings. Nick and Sam will ratchet up the energy with their explosive, virtuoso guitar duet. In 2013 they won the Bluesfest Busking Competition - itself is no mean feat. Now they are old enough to shave, their show bristles as well – be prepared to jaw drop. The evening will end with Tweedshire’s favourite purveyors of good times and

smileyness delivering their raucous and unique set of originals and quirky covers, for a ‘right old knees up’. The night will resemble a throwback to the good old days as it’s BYO drinks. Stokers Siding Hall is renowned for their top quality food menu which is available for purchase, the proceeds of which go back to the hall. They will also run their own bar for those who don’t know how to work an esky. Tickets are disappearing fast and can be bought online at trybooking.com or at: Murwillumbah Music, Stokers Siding General Store and Burringbar General Store. Tickets prices are $20 Adult, $10 (12-17 years old) and Free for under 12s.

WEEK FROM THU 25 FEB TO WED 2 MAR CAROL

Must see intimate concert coming to Tyalgum in March For the 21-year-old virtuosa, it will be a very short stroll down memory lane: As a three-year-old child, Ayesha was learning to play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on her toy piano when her family lived in the building behind Flutterbies that is now part of the café complex. By primary school, she was tackling pieces that were well above her grade. By the age of 11, her innate musical ability was fostered by former artistic director of the Tyalgum Festival of Classical Music, piano teacher Jenni Hibbard. At age 13, Ayesha received a scholarship from Variety the Children’s Charity to study at the Young Conservatorium. She has since gone on to study a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University and has won numerous national and international piano competitions, including the 2014 Sydney Eisteddfod Allison/Henderson Scholarship, the 2015 Brisbane Club Award and the 2015 Lev Vlassenko Piano Competition. Now recognised as one of Australia’s most promising classical music stars, Ayesha has never forgotten where it all started. She regularly returns to the Tweed to perform at the Tyalgum Music Festival, and at various recitals around the Valley. She has also recently taken on the role of International Ambassador for Variety the Children’s Charity.

Piano Competition, Ayesha Gough, will return to her childhood home for an intimate afternoon concert at Flutterbies Cottage Café in Tyalgum on Saturday, March 12.

For her March 12 performance at Flutterbies, Ayesha will be joined by fellow Conservatorium student and 2015 Brisbane Club Award finalist, Petah Chapman. The 26-year-old operatic soprano tours nationally and internationally with The Seven Sopranos and has performed as a soloist with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and at Opera Queensland’s 2015 patron launch event. Petah was first introduced to Tweed audiences as the featured vocalist at the Tyalgum Dance Spectacular late last year, delighting the standing-room-only crowd with a beautiful repertoire of traditional opera arias and popular classics. “This is a rare opportunity for music lovers to see two of Australia’s emerging classical and opera stars perform in the very up-close-and-personal venue of Flutterbies,” said Solar Chapel from Hearts Aflame Productions. “In years to come, I have no doubt that Ayesha and Petah will be gracing the stages of the world’s best concert halls and opera houses so it’s a privilege for Hearts Aflame Productions to be able to bring them together in Tyalgum.” The Flutterbies Cottage Café concert will be presented in the olde world surrounds of The Little Shop Next Door from 2.30pm on Saturday, March 12. Tickets are priced at $40 per person for the concert and Flutterbies Café will be providing a special afternoon tea for the concert patrons during the interval. Places are strictly limited so early reservations are recommended. Phone Hearts Aflame Productions on 0488 713 241 or www.heartsaflameproductions.com.

FOCUS ON YOUTH

Murwillumbah East Primary School 73133

One of the many strengths of our welfare program is the powerful connection to the wider community that our students develop. All of our children understand that their school is an integral part of the community in which they live and appreciate that their actions can have a really positive impact on it.

CELEBRATED

Last week we also inducted our school and classroom councillors at our regular Friday assembly. These students play a pivotal role in representing our school and student body at a range of school and community events. They display maturity and a sense of citizenship and take their responsibilities very seriously. Principal Ms Sam Rowsell, stage three teachers Mr Michael Tunaley and Ms Melissa Noble had the honour of presenting this wonderful group of students with their councillor’s badges and formally introducing them to our school community and visiting parents and friends. We wish them all the best and look forward to following their progress throughout the year.

pulled through and helped each other out. I was elected house captain at my school for 2016 so that’s up there too I guess :) 3. Could you tell our readers about your Kokoda trek recently? My Trek in PNG was one of the most special experiences of my life. The trail it’s self is pretty hardcore. It’s mostly roots and rocks you have to climb over and that can be very difficult when carrying 15kg on your back. The walk was challenging both mentally and physically. It was obviously a physical challenge seeing as the ‘hills’ you’re walking up or down are at mainly 40-80 degree angles! It was mentally hard to punch myself up those hills. I really missed my family because there’s no communication but my team mates became my second family and I still see them as that now. There’s the historical side as well. It was very confronting seeing the old ammunition and fox holes left by the war. It’s crazy to think that a war was actually fought there especially on that terrain. Thinking about the soldiers and all involved really puts the walk into perspective and makes you push that much harder to cross ‘the finish line’ 4. What about the documentary, what was the best part about working on this project? It was such a surprise when i got the call that they wanted me to be apart of this! I loved filming my life and telling my story but I Had no idea how big of a deal it was! I sort of just sent in the footage thinking they’d cut me out but there I was in the movie! My mum helped me out a lot. I feel really privileged to get to be in the movie and that they thought my story was worth telling! Even now I’m getting texts and calls that someone’s seen me on an add on YouTube or in the movies! It’s pretty cool! 5. What are some of your future hopes and aspirations? I’m hoping to study social science at university. I’d love to be apart of the programs that work to stop and prevent poverty and inequality. I’d also love to help third world countries become sustainable communities as I strongly believe we need to head in that direction. My ultimate goal would be too work for someone like the UN or world vision and other organisations like that but right now I’m trying to focus on school and hopefully doing a trek in Nepal at the end of the year. For more visit Australianoftheday.com.au

The 20 minute film features a cast of regular, everyday Aussies. Over the course of a day, they tell us their stories, introduce us to their families, invite us into their homes, their workplaces, their lives. The crowd-shot footage has been stitched together by Armstrong to produce an intimate and one-of-a-kind portrait of modern Australia – it’s a story about Australians told by Australians. From Redfern to Mirrabooka and Tennant Creek to Bakery Hill, the film features an eclectic range of characters from across the nation including some previous Australians of the Year, and has been made from over 50 hours of raw footage which took Gillian over 3 months to piece together into a charming and at times heartrending documentary. One of the case studies featured 16-year-old Mia Tarantini (pictured above), who after learning about the Kokoda trail at school, jumped at the chance to take on the grueling challenge. She trained for five months to complete the 96-kilometre trek through the Owen Stanley Range in Papua New Guinea, and says she now has a new appreciation for mateship, courage and sacrifice. 1. Mia, firstly could you please tell us a little about yourself? Well I just started year 12 so I’m getting ready to knuckle down and finish school. I have 2 part time jobs at some restaurants which I work at on weekends and some week nights. I live with my mum dad and younger sister. I enjoy reading, snowboarding and trekking or going for walks. I just got my licence so I’m often with my friend checking out waterfalls and doing small bush walks to find them. 2. What are some of your biggest accomplishments? My biggest accomplishment to date would obviously be completing the Kokoda trail in September last year. This would be closely followed by the Gold Coast Kokoda challenge which is a 96km walk with a time limit of 39 hours (my team completed it in 31) I really thought I wouldn’t make it but the whole team really

Our recent Sweet Heart Day fundraiser is a great example. In order to raise funds for Australian children with childhood heart disease and to support vital medical research, our students dressed in red and made a gold coin donation. The fundraiser was driven by our school councillors and coordinated by Ms Melissa Noble. As we have students in our school whose lives are affected by heart disease, this particular fundraiser struck a chord with all of our school families. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our students we were able to donate more than $360 to the charity. It was a great effort from everyone and a tribute to our school community’s compassion and support.

Horoscopes BY “RAIN”

Aries Mar 21 - April 19 The Full Moon in your zone of wellness and lifestyle could be the reason you venture off track regarding your diet or exercise routine. If so, try not to let it stop you in your tracks. Pick yourself up and start again when you feel more settled. Later in the week you may find that a discussion brings a chance to explore new ideas and ventures that you’ll want to work on as part of a team. And finally, Sunday could bring out the dreamer in you. Taurus April 20 – May 20 The Full Moon shines on your zone of leisure and pleasure, spotlighting activities you’ll love to indulge. Will it be a romantic liaison or creative pursuit, sports or more cultural activity? Watch out, though, as you could act on impulse, especially where romance is concerned, which might cause you to do something you’ll come to regret later. The end of the week could be excellent for getting your bearings regarding a job or career goal. Friends may tempt you out on Sunday. Gemini May 21 – Jun 20 The Full Moon enhances sensitivity to everyday situations, so home could be a place of tension and potential spats on Monday. It’s worthwhile staying calm and not upsetting the apple cart. If you know a topic will cause tension, avoid it. Thursday and Friday could prove enlightening, particularly if you’re eager to explore a new path or branch out into new territory. Friends or significant others may have encouraging information for you. Avoid making business decisions on Sunday, however. Cancer Jun 21 – July 22 You may have had a difficult start to the week discussing important matters, but later this week you should find your thoughts clarify and idea’s more easily discussed. Someone could have a bright idea about how you can improve your income so keep your ears pricked. You might be drawn to explore a mystery on Sunday. Leo July 23 – Aug 22 Monday’s Full Moon in your personal financial sector may have seen you splurging on items you didn’t really need. Think carefully before you make any further purchases if you want to avoid problems in the future. Lifestyle issues come into focus on Thursday and Friday, which might be a sign to make some well thought out changes. Virgo Aug 23 – Sep 22 Try to lighten your schedule, this might be preferable to muddling your way through an emotional week. Whatever you do, go easy! Thursday and Friday could be pivotal days when much can be accomplished by seeking out further information or getting feedback on innovative ideas. A friend or significant other might need something from you on Sunday. Libra Sep 23 – Oct 22 Watch out for anyone that attracts your attention that might hold useful guidance. Get feedback on your intuition, as it could be somewhat unreliable this week. Another’s perspective can be very helpful. Creativity may also be enhanced by getting an opinion or even advice from others in the know. You might want to kick back and totally unwind on Sunday. Scorpio Oct 23 – Nov 21 This week you may find is important to be cautious with your words, as you will have many sensitive people surrounding you. Mercury makes some sterling aspects on Thursday and Friday that could resolve a family issue or put a positive spin on an idea that’s been around for some time. Sunday could be deeply romantic. Sagittarius Nov 22 – Dec 21 If you’re in the public eye, you’ll want to do your best and avoid drawing attention to yourself for all the wrong reasons. This is the time to behave impeccably. Later in the week you have a chance to discuss issues that are close to your heart. You might find that talking an idea through brings it into perspective, enabling you to make a confident start. Capricorn Dec 22 – Jan 19 The call of the wild could be the reason you’re moved to explore new territory or take up a class early in the week. You’d be wise to think through your actions so you don’t come to regret them later. You’ll enjoy the upbeat discussions that are possible around Thursday and Friday, which could lead to an in-depth understanding of an ongoing emotional issue. Follow your intuition on Sunday. Aquarius Jan 20 – Feb 18 The urge to splurge could tempt you to make purchases that aren’t truly worthwhile. You’ll benefit from holding back at the start of the week even if what you’re contemplating seems like the most desirable item on earth. Later in the week you might wonder what you were thinking. Later, your opinion may be sought by others who see you as the go-to person for their particular issue. Your popularity could go up a notch as a result. Pisces Feb 19 – March 20 Take care when discussing delicate issues, as they will require tact and diplomacy. Avoid doing or saying anything that you might come to regret later. Pay attention to any intuitive hunches toward the end of the week. They might help you save money or avoid delays. Sunday is for romance or indulging in whatever you choose.

THE Tweed Valley Weekly has launched its new dedicated coastal magazine Tweed Coastal Living.

The magazine was delivered to more than 20,500 homes across the Tweed coast with a focus on our beautiful coastline. Readers can expect to see Tweed Coastal Living every season summer, autumn, winter and spring. Tweed Coastal Living sales executive Ryan Jackson-Saw said the response from the magazine has been extremely positive so far, with several businesses already signing up for the autumn edition. “This is the first dedicated coastal magazine that focuses on the Tweed coast and it’s a pleasure to showcase one of the best coastlines in Australia,” he said. “We’re starting up the autumn edition in the new year which will feature even more local events, attractions, activities and local businesses. “I’d encourage readers to support their local businesses that make the coast great.” Ryan said the magazine was now also available online via the Tweed Valley Weekly website: tweedvalleyweekly.net.au

Anyone wanting to get involved with the Autumn edition phone Ryan on: 0425 756 360.

In Memoriam

Margaret Shirley Reinhardt 23rd November 1937 to 25th February, 2015 77 years old

God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, So He put his arms around you and whispered “come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, we watched you faid away, Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands now at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Loving sisters, Beverley & Evelyn and family.

Women of the war years - battling behind the scenes THREE WAR brides who travelled

and exciting life, that was different.” Although besieged by German bombing raids, when death and destruction were common place, Margaret battled on and became extremely resourceful, eventually carrying out maintenance on the heavy vehicles. “Women could only drive up to a certain sized truck, but I quickly found my way around, it was difficult, I just felt for the men and hoped they came back,” she said. It was during these runs that Margaret met George Carver who she would later marry. George passed away several years ago but his memory lives on with Margaret. She still wears the same ring George bought her as the war was coming to an end. “He left for London quickly and came back with this ring,” she said. Margaret and George settled in Murwillumbah shortly after WWII ended in 1945.

“It was a proud moment for my father to see me with those three stripes on my uniform,” she said. “Especially after how angry he’d been when he found out I enlisted.” Kellie said her life behind the communications desk was one of happy times and all while such tragic events unfolded around them. “Because it was happening to everyone, there was a shared sense of loss and duty, we were in it together,” she said. “I was engaged to a pilot from New Zealand, we’d known each other about 12 months before he was shot down and killed in Germany,” she said. Kellie would later meet Quintin and marry and raise four children in Murwillumbah.

Rose Boyd’s story

Kellie Snow’s story

IF THERE was ever a story worthy Margaret Carver 93, Kellie Snow 96 and Rose Boyd 92, can all recall the vivid images of World War II. They can also recall, in great detail, the specialised and often crucial roles they played during England’s war effort.

of the silver screen it would be that of Kellie Snow (pictured below). Kellie was in a similar situation as Margaret and around the same time.

“We were living in the Tower of London at the time in order to hoist out these great balloons and at-tempt to keep them in position as the air-raid horn would sound,” she said. As the war effort continued, balloon shielding was seen as an invaluable defensive method and a male squadron was assigned to the duties. “So we were left wondering what we’d be doing when they assigned us parachute packing duties,” Rose said. “I packed hundreds of those parachutes for soldiers and eventually became strangely good at packing parachutes. “I was assigned the duty with a team of others to pack the parachutes for the D-Day landing commandos, which were a specially designed parachute.” “They were admittedly good times; there was a lot of loss and people often died for no reason. I re-member I once saw bodies being dragged out from a bunker under the streets of London, because someone had inadvertently covered up the air valve, so they couldn’t breathe down there,” she said.

“If you didn’t enlist they gave you something to do – there was a war on and parts of London were in ruins - so you couldn’t avoid it,” she said. Kellie was assigned the role of communications and would later work on one of the Royal Air Force’s most famous air bombing missions

AT THE age of 18 Rose Boyd had

already seen terrible scenes of death throughout England.

She decided to contribute to the war effort by joining the WAAFS. She was assigned the job of balloon operator which involved anchoring large helium balloons throughout London to shield the city from air attacks. The role was extremely dangerous and often left the balloon operators as targets.

known as the “Dambusters”. The Dambusters were a group of international forces led by the British to destroy German dam walls. Lancaster bombers were modified to fly extremely low and methods were devised to skim a bomb across the water’s surface into the German’s dam walls. Although the mission was heralded a victory, it claimed the lives of 53 men including 12 from Australia and 29 from Canada. “I was assigned to relay the codeword to Sir Winston Churchill’s advisors in the USA at the time,” she said. “It was very secretive and we couldn’t utter a word about the missions outside.” Kellie would later climb the ranks to Sergeant of the communications division.

In her early 20s, while the war was raging, Margaret (pictured above), from Scotland, enlisted into the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force Service (WAAFS) where she was assigned the task of transporting pilots. “At the time, you either did what you were told or you enlisted,” she said. “So I enlisted. Sometimes it was good, sometimes it wasn’t. “I’d come from a quiet place in Scotland and this was a whole new www.tweedvalleyweekly.net.au

“We still went through it together and the good times were as good as they could be, that’s why we lived by the motto live for today for tomorrow you may die.” Rose would later meet Thomas Murray Boyd in a pub in Manchester at the age of 20. Rose and Kellie travelled by sea to Australia via the Sterling Castle, which according to their accounts was “quite nice”. Whereas, Margaret was unfortunately left alone to travel on the Orbita, which she said was not a nice way to travel. “After that voyage and after the Orbita returned back to England, it was scrapped,” Margaret said. All three ladies remain close friends in Murwillumbah, where they raised children and families. Kellie still remembers the Kiwi she almost married and the trucks she used to drive. Kellie remem-bers the tension of her position and excitement of the war years. Rose still remembers the terrible bat-tle scenes all around her in contrast to a simple life on the Condong cane fields.

Cudgen SLSC welcomes special visitor

Mr Vu and some of the members intending to travel to Vietnam to support lifesaving development. CUDGEN Surf Club has hosted a lifeguard manager from Vietnam for the past month and this week plans were made for club members to visit Vietnam in July. Nguyen Duc Vu from the Peoples Committee of Danang City visited Cudgen as part of the Club’s International Lifesaving Development Initiative. While in Australia Mr Vu learnt about approaches to aquatic management. Tweed Shire Council also assisted by showing him aspects of coastal land management. Local Businessman Russell Zahn sponsored the cost of Mr Vu’s travel under the Zahn Scholarship that funds Cudgen to bring suitable people from South East Asia to learn about water safety and drowning prevention. Now the club wants to follow up Mr Vu’s visit by travelling to Vietnam in July to support a number of lifesaving initiatives recently established in the Central region of Vietnam.

Will We Be Fighting Winston on the Beaches?

CYCLONE Winston devastated Fiji last weekend and there is a swell of epic proportions predicted to hit the East Coast of Australia, especially our little part from this Friday/Saturday. The storm reached category 5 status and retained a phenomenal central pressure of 915 hPa as it crossed directly over Fiji early on Sunday; wreaking havoc as it sustained wind-speeds of 220 kilometres per hour, with gusts exceeding 300 kilometres per hour – and making it the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded. Early reports have a 16 second period Easterly groundswell around the 8-10 foot plus mark peaking on Saturday afternoon. This could either be epic or a dud. Saturday more than likely will be too big to surf anywhere unless you have the experience and fitness to get a jet ski out on the massive outer bombees. There may be a great show to watch Saturday from the top of Kirra Hill, but for all other human beings, unless you are qualified, super-fit, and super-experienced it will be best to become a spectator. There are a few implications from this big swell. The Quiksilver Pro site, may be close to getting washed away. But for the organisers (Who by the way moved the

Surfest to Wrap Up Monday

Newcastle is the current epicentre of the World Qualifying class of 2016. The Burton Toyota Pro for men, and the Tagget Women’s Pro have attracted as always a great field. Stephanie Gilmore is there getting back into her contest mode for 2016, as is her Aussie arch rival Sally Fitzgibbon and most of the Women’s World Championship surfers. Local girls having a crack

include Pottsville lass Brittany Nichol, Kingscliff surfer Codie Klein, and Ellie Jean Coffey. Palm Beach surfer and defending champion Ellie Brooks is in the first heat of round 3. Also Jack Freestone’s lovely lady is turning heads with her surfing instead of her Instagram, ripping in with some new school surfing. For the men, Jack Freestone, Mitch Crews and Brent Dorrington will be flying the locals flag. Surfest is always a great event and you can watch it live from the WSL Website. The event wraps up Monday, then the circus will be off to Manly, for the Hurley Australian Open of Surfing. Catch you in the waves!!

Wicket to Wicket -with Steve Twohill

Cudgen Secure Hooker League Minor Premiership Defending Premiers Cudgen 9/173 secured the minor premiership with a solid win over contender Tintenbar East Ballina 108. Alex Williams 58, Caleb Ziebell 3/15 and James Julius 3/26 continued their good seasons for the Hornets. Whilst at Seabreeze Oval Pottsville 99 and 83 fell short of an outright win against Lennox Head 75 and 5/108. The Pelicans will be looking for a win in their final game and counting on a loss to Marist Brothers for them to secure a final four spot. The final round of the season sees the Hornets hosting Casino, whilst Pottsville travels to Fripp Oval to take on the Ballina Bears. Coastal League Season Wraps Up In a local derby at Rabjones Oval Murwillumbah 6/204 put on their best showing of the season with a win over Cudgen 7/201 in a quality game. Dylan Stoddard scored an unbeaten 113 to set up a good total for the Hornets. In reply the Panthers young guns in Ashton Wilson 66, Sidney Ewing 57 and 2/46 and an unbeaten 38 from Jack Sims ensured a win with 4 balls to spare. The future looks bright if these guys hang around together with some experienced players stepping up next season. In the other games despite an unbeaten 54 from Ian Rowlings, Terranora 6/154 were well beaten by Ballina Bears 1/159, whilst Pottsville 38 were thumped by Byron Bay 8/234. The final round this weekend see Murwillumbah hosting second placed Byron Bay, Terranora taking on Alstonville and Pottsville at home against Ballina Bears. Cudgen are on the road to play third placed Tintenbar East Ballina. It will be the first time in many years that no Tweed side will feature in the finals series. In saying that, there are a number of positives to come out of the season with most clubs containing young players successfully making the transition from juniors to seniors. Most sides have been competitive on their day which beckons well for next season. Tweed Valley Finals Loom With the top three spots locked in with Murwillumbah’s Wildcats (74), Pumas (73) and Tigers (67), Cudgen (58) and South Tweed Thirstiers No. 1 (55) will battle out for fourth spot over the next fortnight. Kieron Walkers Bobcats have drifted from the field over the past month. Highlights from the weekend included Thirstiers No. 1 upset win over Jason

Mortimer’s Wildcats and Cudgen’s 9/286 return to form win over Cabarita 8/127. In Murwillumbah Brent McCloy’s Pumas side 1/105 was too good for the Bobcats 9/102 despite a half century from James Simpson. Blake Gilmore remained unbeaten on 50 for the Pumas, whilst Adrian Gorton 3/15 and Lionel McCloy 3/16 were the chief destroyers. Next door Paul Jones Tigers 8/412 were too strong for the Cubs 192. Unbeaten innings from Wayne Shortus 100, Curtis Strong 52 and Paul Jones 51 helped Matt Sutton 98 set an impossible target. This week’s games see Dean Mangold’s Cudgen side play Shane Wilson’s Thirstiers No. 2 side, Brent McCloy’s Pumas side take on Cabarita and Thirstier’s No. 1 host the Tigers. In Murwillumbah Bryan Burrows Cougars play the Bobcats at Les Cave, whilst stable mates the Wildcats battle Reyman Gill’s Cubs side on Barrie Smith. Tweed Valley T20 Blast The junior T20 Blast program finished up at Rabjones Oval this week. The 12 week mid-week format aimed at 8 to 12 year old boys and girls was a resounding success. Well done to Dave Parkes who coordinated the program which rotated around the four Tweed venues. Some of these kids will transition into the junior competitions next season. Murwillumbah and Cudgen make Junior Semi Finals 3rd placed Murwillumbah U16’s travel away to play Alstonville over the next fortnight in their semi-final. Whilst Cudgen Green U 14’s play away to Lennox Head. The winner of both games will advance to their respective Grand Finals. There are two more rounds of games to complete the Under 12’s competition. Murwillumbah Panthers remain in second spot of the seventeen team competition. Far North Coast – Coast v Country Twenty 20 Games A number of Tweed juniors will participate in the inaugural Coast v Country Twenty 20 games at Oakes Oval Lismore this Sunday 28 February. Murwillumbah players Travis and Joel Antonelli, Ashton Wilson (pictured) will join up with Cudgen’s Harvey Moase and Hayden Wilson. Pottsville’s Bailey Engler rounds out the local content. The Twenty 20 games will be played consecutively from 10am. Have a great week ahead Steve T

Cabarita Beach SLSC – Belinda Pye An idea that arose from attending the 2014/15 Youth Opportunity Makers Workshop has inspired Brunswick SLSC surf lifesaver to patrol at every NSW Surf Life Saving Club and last Sunday.

The 17-year-old started to hone his idea after listening to the 2014 Volunteer of the Year, Andy Cross from South Narrabeen, who spoke about his journey surfing at every surf club in NSW to promote the Gold Medallion program. “My inspiration within the Surf Life Saving movement would definitely have to be Andy Cross. I was lucky enough to have him as a presenter for the YOM program which I attended in April 2015,” said the final year school student. Sam spoke to our Nippers and their parents about the two messages as to why he wants to patrol at all 129 clubs. “I want to encourage all active surf lifesavers to patrol at a different surf life saving club and I also want to encourage the younger members of Surf Life Saving to be thinking about taking up committee roles within their respective clubs,” said Sam. The Brisbane teen spent his Christmas holidays discovering the Sydney clubs starting the first patrol at North Palm Beach on the 12th of December and then over the six weeks finishing up at Manly. Spending most of his time at South Narrabeen SLSC and at North Palm Beach SLSC for the first part of his Sydney Northern Beaches journey, Sam patrolled throughout the holiday period including every weekend and public holiday and performed his first rescue on New Year’s Day at South Narrabeen. Apart from spreading his message, the surf lifesaver has learnt a great deal more than he expected, particularly about the way clubs manage their patrols and is eager to share this with the clubs on the FNC. “I’ve learnt a lot to do with the beaches and the different way patrols are run and how they manage having lots of people in the water. Coming from Brunswick Heads, we’ve only got 20 or 30 people in the water, so coming down to Sydney where you can have around 300 people to watch over is really quite amazing,” said Sam. Sam spent Saturday at Salt SLSC and Sunday with Patrols 4 and 3 from Cabarita Beach and certainly had a captive audience with our youth. Sam will head back to Brisbane and concentrate on his final year of high school and on the weekends will continue to patrol at the Far North Coast clubs before the Easter holidays. If you would like to follow Sam’s journey visit his Instagram account: patrol129beaches Opening hours for the bar - Friday to Sunday from Noon. Come and enjoy the beautiful views and great company.
