Malcolm Turnbull and The Nationals’ want to increase the GST to 15% and put it on everything. This will cost Australian households up to $4000 a year! People who can least afford it will be hit the hardest.

“Hooning is making koala’s life hell” THREATENED SPECIES Conservation Society Inc president David Norris
has highlighted hooning as a continued issue at the Black Rocks sports field access road and this time he’s provided photographic evidence.
related disease. Tweed Shire Councillors are meeting today (Thursday, February 18) to discuss the Black Rocks sports field and hooning concerns.
In a letter addressed to local politicians, Tweed Shire Council and the media, Mr Norris said he wished to report that 12 days after the bollards were installed (5/1/2016), adjacent to the speed humps on the Black Rocks sports field access road, there was evidence of another hooning event (see photo). “As indicated in these photos, the debris projected from the wheel ruts and strewn in clumps at various locations on the grass verge, and the skid marks on the bitumen where the vehicle returned to the road, leaves no doubt that the activity was hooning,” he wrote. “These photos also clearly differentiate between the Council’s ride-on mower and the hooning tracks.” Mr Norris said the hooning event occurred during koala breeding season and in the middle of an area where koalas have been sighted on numerous occasions, placing resident and breeding koalas at significant risk of vehicle strike, disturbance and stress-
New skate park to get sprayed up MURWILLUMBAH’S NEW Knox Park skate facility is now open and attracting skaters of all ages and experience levels to the area.
Local skate shop owner and graffiti artist Tony Lawrence has been engaged by Council to undertake an urban art project on the park and said he had seen it gain huge popularity in a short length of time. “Our skate park has a great vibe and is attracting a variety of community members, from young families to professional skateboarders,” Mr Lawrence said. “The modern facility caters for all levels of ability and will be sure to produce some new local talent.” Council’s Landscape Architect, Ian Bentley, helped designed the Youth Precinct and said Mr Lawrence would create a total of three different artworks that would give the half-pipes and bowls a local touch. “The works are to go on the exposed retaining walls throughout the skate park, and the main one will capture some of the Tweed’s local natural assets,” Mr Bentley said. “If all goes to plan, Tony will be able to start work in late February.” Mayor of Tweed Councillor Katie Milne said: “Skaters say this skate park is ‘sick’. Council takes the job of bringing more fun to town very seriously so we’re stoked with the ‘sick’ endorsement.” “The graffiti art project will be awesome too - it’s going to really liven up the place and show off scenes of our natural assets in a new, cool and very vibrant light.” The skate park is part of the first stage of a $1.2 million upgrade to Knox Park, funded by a $250,000 donation from the Lions Club of Murwillumbah, a $500,000 Regional Development Australia grant from the Federal Government and $500,000 from Council.

The school took immediate action to contact parents and provide a fact sheet from Northern NSW Local Health District. According to early reports the one student diagnosed with the infection remains in a stable condition and is undergoing treatment. The Weekly contact the school for comment but was not able to speak with the principal at the time. Whooping cough starts like a cold with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, a mild fever and an occasional cough, according to Northern NSW Local Health District. The cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big gasping breath which causes a “whooping” sound. The cough can last for many weeks and can be worse at night. • Some newborns may not cough at all but stop breathing completely and turn blue. Other babies have difficulties feeding or they can choke and gag. • Older children and adults may just have a mild cough that doesn’t go away. In adults the cough commonly lasts 5-7 weeks, sometimes longer. In China, whooping cough is known as the 100-day cough! Why is whooping cough so serious? Whooping cough can just be an annoying cough for adults and older children but for babies it can sometimes be life threatening.

Exercise for life
A GROUP of 14 local women and survivors of breast cancer are training to go to the dragon boats Club Crews World Championships to compete in the Breast Cancer Survivor category.
Valid from 17th Feb till 28th Feb 73176
10
MURWILLUMBAH – 02 6672 3675 55-57 Nullum Street, (adjacent to Murwillumbah High School)
The club (pictured above) was started in 2007 with the main goal of giving an exercise opportunity to those who had undergone treatment for breast cancer. Anne Bowden spoke to The Weekly about the importance of keeping fit and exercising. “We recognize and fully appreciate that breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can erode our confidence in facing life again,” she said. “Most of us came from a background of not exercising regularly so to take on the challenge of getting in a boat to exercise was quite daunting. “However, a very warm welcome, support and instruction awaits anyone who wants to come and try the sport. Mrs Bowden said after treatment exercise was very important to decrease the possibility of cancer’s return. “And to reduce some of the side effects of treatment such as lymphedema,” she said. “Dragon boating is a fun and challenging exercise that becomes addictive. The supportive atmosphere of the group keeps us coming back. Having faced the challenges of the diagnosis and the treatment every day is a valuable day to celebrate. “It also becomes a challenge to see how far we can go and what we can achieve. Hence the trip to Adelaide. We will never know if we don’t give it a go. We celebrate life after treatment and we want every other person to do so too.” Scientific research has conclusively shown the benefits of exercise to all cancer survivors and breast cancer survivors in particular. Dragons Abreast Mt Warning is a member group of Dragons Abreast Australia whose aims are: (1) To help people with a diagnosis of breast cancer understand that they can still lead full and active lives despite physical limitations imposed by breast cancer. (2) To encourage people to achieve their dream of regaining an active, adventurous lifestyle despite the diagnosis of breast cancer. (3) To give a face to the breast cancer statistics. (4) To promote wellness, fitness, fun and camaraderie for breast cancer survivors in Australia and internationally through our links with other breast cancer dragon boat teams. (5) To raise awareness of breast cancer whilst supporting the search for a cure. With 1 in 8 Australian women getting a diagnosis of breast cancer in their lifetime and 120 men per year, it is important to spread the word about the value of life

after treatment. The club was the vision of Chris Lonie whose sister died from the disease. Chris saw Dragon Boating in 2007 1and knew it was an opportunity that she wanted to establish in the Murwillumbah area. She and a small band of breast cancer survivors and supporters worked tirelessly to establish the club, fundraise for the boats, compete in regattas, fundraise for Breast Cancer of Australia, National Breast Cancer Foundation and Cancer Council and promote the benefits of exercise after treatment. Current members are deeply grateful to those original members and we take our inspiration from them.
Find out more 1. Club members competed in the International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission Participatory Dragon Boat Festival in Peterborough, Canada in 2010 and again in Sarasota Florida in 2014 in a team combined with Dragons Abreast Gold Coast. The 2014 team came 8th out of 101 teams. To have 3000 breast Cancer survivors from around the world in one venue is a very impressive and sobering experience. We aim to compete in Florence Italy in 2018. Five our survivor paddlers have competed in open sporting events and have Queensland State, Australia National and International titles to their credit. For many of us life after breast cancer treatment is the start of a new phase of life where we take on challenges that we would never have thought of before the diagnosis. So we are going to Adelaide with the excitement of facing a new challenge. 2. We recognize and fully appreciate that breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can erode our confidence in facing life again. Most of us came from a background of not exercising regularly so to take on the challenge of getting in a boat to exercise was quite daunting. However a very warm welcome, support and instruction awaits anyone who wants to come and try the sport on a Saturday. Contact Anne Bowden, 0428446482 for details. All equipment is provided. 3. To make a difference in our own lives or someone else’s life is to have the courage to have a go. No one knows what will make a difference till we give it a go. Everyone benefits from the gifts of a smile, a word of encouragement and a little bit of time. “T.S.Eliot wrote “only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far we can go”. And so we face Club Crews World Championships, Breast Cancer category with excitement and confident that we will give it our best shot,” she said. Anyone wishing to help us with our costs to get there can do so through our crowd funding site at https://chuffed. org/project/dragonsabreastmtwarning.

Digging up our history Students have big hearts FOR VISITORS to Murwillumbah late last year, it wasn’t hard to notice the major road works taking place along the length of Main Street in the historic town centre.
What they might not have noticed was the project provided an opportunity to dig into the past of the central business district and uncover a few interesting finds. Museum Director Judy Kean said Excavating Main Street was a small display that documented the project and featured some of these finds, on exhibition until 15 July this year. “We are delighted to be able to add the wealth of significant information assembled during the project to the Tweed Regional Museum’s extensive collection, particularly for an area already recognised for its heritage value,” Ms Kean said. “The replacement of major drainage provided an opportunity to re-examine some of the early infrastructure in the area, in some cases dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s.” She said historic photos and maps already in the Museum’s collection provided important points of comparison for those working on the project. “For example, the 1929 concrete road and associated drainage was uncovered, as well as wooden foot bridges dating back to the late 1800s,” she said.
“One of these showed clear evidence of damage caused by the great fire of 15 September 1907, which became known as Red Sunday. “By adding this next generation of documentation, and an intriguing selection of finds to the Museum collection, we are making sure that in 100 years’ time the story of Murwillumbah Main Street drainage 2015, and the earlier story of this historic precinct, can be easily discovered.” Murwillumbah-based archaeologist Cosmos Coroneos, who completed research and documentation of the historical aspects of this project, will present a free talk about his work at Tweed Regional Museum on Wednesday 17 February. “Archaeology brings a crucial dimension to projects like this,” Ms Kean said. “The process of researching historical sources such as early photos in the Museum’s collection enabled Council to anticipate what might be found during excavation and the involvement of Mr Coroneos ensured that important historical finds could be appropriately documented, preserved where appropriate, and that work could continue as quickly as possible.” Refreshments will be available from 5.30pm with Mr Coroneos’s presentation starting at 6pm.
