Local agents are the real deal Scott Reading has been the licensee in charge of First National Murwillumbah for the past five years and said rural properties are currently in high demand. “We’ve been advertising in The Weekly every month for the last few years now and we find we do get a lot of inquiry from the paper, especially for open homes,” he said. “Around this area we have a lot of clients from the older generation who like having that paper in front of them. “Getting people along to open homes is important as sometimes people don’t even know they are in the market and are just sticky beaking or other times they are looking for something completely different but when they see a particular property they suddenly realise they are ready for that type of house. “We do also get a lot of Sydney buyers and some from the Gold Coast but locals still make up the biggest market share. “We’ve found since covid we’ve had a lot of rural interest with people trying to get out of the city.” Craig Dudgeon is the Principal of Elders Tweed Valley and believes there is no sign of the market slowing. “The market’s really strong, we’re having a record month so covid certainly hasn’t affected us,” he said. “While online digital marketing is very instant, we still find newspapers are reaching people, in particular the Tweed Valley Weekly as it tends to hang around the home longer because of the TV guide. “It also just offers that reinforcement of the digital presence. “I think not having Sydney and Melbourne buyers in the market during

covid has given locals the opportunity to purchase as they seem to be a bit slower to purchase as they often still have to get their finances in place, whereas a lot of Sydney and Melbourne buyers come up with cash and that’s favoured by vendors. “Locals have been enjoying the opportunity to finally purchase without that sense of urgency that was previously there. “Now, however, those city buyers are back as well as buyers from the Gold Coast and Brisbane and we’re seeing things move even quicker with properties selling in days not weeks. “In terms of what’s selling, it’s a bit of everything. “Anything with character seems to be hot, especially if it’s true character, such as homes built in the early 1900s, they are always popular. “Purchasers from Byron, Mullumbimby and Brunswick are also coming into the market as they’ve seen what happened there so they are coming here to jump on similar properties.” Amanda Patterson is the Principal and Owner of Local Realty Sales & Rentals in Tweed Heads and believes papers still sell properties. “We always present clients who are selling their homes with an option for print advertising,” she said. “If we need to spike interest in a particular property, we’ll do a four-week campaign with print. “I do still find we get results from that because print still has a place in our community. “Overall, we’ve got a very elderly demographic and I’ve heard many older people ask about where else they can find things other than having to go online. “The Tweed Valley Weekly in particular is in a great position to capture that market.

“Newspapers have also been very important to me personally as I used to work for News Limited in the nineties and I still get the paper delivered at home, that’s how much I love papers! “I think there is a great opportunity for the Tweed Valley Weekly in this market and we are grateful for the one print media we still have left and we are not the only ones. “Outside our shop in Bay Street, we’ve got a stand with papers and last week I had nothing left by Thursday as so many people were grabbing the paper to read.” Randal Wilson is the director of Wilson Property Group who have been overseeing the sale of Tweed Grandview Terraces, which were part of a billiondollar revitalisation project that was one of the largest single investments in the Tweed Shire’s history. “Our company is selling what used to be the Terranora Lakes Golf and Country Club,” he said. “They have now been completely refurbished and turned into a brand-new residential complex. “With our marketing we use a mix of newspaper advertising, letterbox drops, realestate.com and signage. “You have to do it all to get the traction you need. “We are finding we are selling to both owner occupiers and investors. “The owner occupiers are a mixed bag from young professional single females to retirees. “In terms of the market I think we are living in a bit of a bubble at the moment with covid but the banks are still lending to people wanting to do things in the market. “I think when JobKeeper ends, the fallout will happen and once the economy is no longer propped up by the government, that’s when I believe we will start to see some disarray in the market.”

David Stringer is the Principal of DJ Stringer at Coolangatta and said the real estate market is going strong at the moment, especially at the higher end of the market, and he’s also welcomed Tweed Valley Weekly’s launch of a new dedicated real estate section. “The 1 to 1.5-million-dollar housing market, especially beachfront apartments is going well and has been flat out,” he said. “The lower end of the market has softened slightly, but I think that’s due to the buyers that it would attract, such as first home buyers and investors, due to job security in the market. “In saying that, there are still strong buyers across the board, but a lack of new listings is the problem.” Mr Stringer said he was happy that The Weekly has launched a dedicated real estate section in print from this week. “In our 19 years we’ve always used a combination of digital and print, which we find very effective,” he said. “We are a great supporter of The Weekly and hope to help make this section a success for readers and the community, as we have been pushing this from the start. “People are still very much engaged with the print format and love to sit down with their weekly edition and a cuppa.” Mr Stringer said he was happy The Weekly provides a community awareness platform and a strong community newspaper, “that’s both comprehensive in its reporting and includes a great range of local businesses”. “A big part of community publication is the real estate section, so it makes perfect sense to launch one for The Weekly, which we hope will be a big success,” he said.

Tweed Valley Weekly Locals Supporting Locals

Thursday, July 2 , 2020 Coast to Country Real Estate

Welcome to your dedicated new local real estate section: Weekly Real Estate, From Coast to Country THE TWEED Valley Weekly team is pleased to announce the launch of your all new Weekly Real Estate from Coast to Country section, printed every week inside. Building on the strength of the local print format and increasing demand for a strong independent print presence, The Weekly is now working with local real estate agents to provide a strong platform for real estate businesses in the Tweed and Southern Gold Coast. Editor and owner Jonathon Howard said the move made sense following News Corp’s exit from its print edition in the Tweed Shire. “The Weekly supplies a print edition that’s jam-packed with local content and local businesses, all in the one place and it’s free, it simply made sense to have a dedicated real estate section,” he said. “If you are interested in the events and information that shapes the Tweed Shire every week, Tweed Valley Weekly is here for you now and into the future and we are now offering the best in local real estate. “We also have a website, where you can view the full edition every week free of charge.” Mr Howard said The Weekly was also answering the call from local real estate agents to increase circulation and boost delivery numbers. “As of this week (July 2) we have significantly increased the number of bulk drops at all the major shopping centres, including The Strand at Coolangatta, who were crying out for more,” he said.

“We’re also looking for new distribution locations including any businesses that want a free newspaper stand at either Tweed Heads or Banora Point (conditions apply*). “This enables businesses to become pick up points for The Weekly and will aid in improving our distribution and circulation in Tweed Heads and Banora Point, where readers love The Weekly but are often disappointed when the stands are empty on a Thursday.” Mr Howard said there would be more announcements in the coming weeks. “We won’t stop there,” he said. “We are committed to refining and improving our circulation now and into the future. “We are now the only free newspaper delivering to regional homes across the Tweed Valley as well as most homes across the Tweed Coast, truly connecting coast to country.” Mr Howard said the team felt supported by the many locals both young and old who love The Weekly and are eager to see the paper’s real estate section grow. “We are taking calls and emails every day wishing us the best and most importantly to stay the course,” he said. “People rely on their print source of media as both an important pillar of democracy and as a trusted source of local information. “We employ several outstanding journalists in Jo Kennett on the coast and Megan Albany across the arts and general news, who are among the best

in the business and are passionate about local news reporting. “I want to thank the community for its support and while it was sad to see the closure of the Tweed Daily News in print, rest assured we are hear for our local readers and businesses.

“We will pick up the pieces and continue to offer the best local newspaper a community such as ours deserves.” *If you are interested in ordering a free newspaper stand, please phone The Weekly on (02) 6672 4443.
