Greetings, Recently, I was on Facebook and someone was wishing his mother a “Happy Birthday”. His mother used to be the ISS (In-School Suspension) monitor at my middle school. Though I didn’t get in a lot of trouble, I ended up in there one time and she commended me on my penmanship and would mention it to me whenever she saw me after I was released from their custody and allowed back into my regular classes, lol. I had heard that I had great handwriting before but you always remember people who give you positive reinforcement, especially at that age. I appreciated her for that and never forgot. That great penmanship has involved into quite a few other things. With that being said, welcome to our 2nd “Youth Edition” which consists of young talent under 21 years old. We have to encourage our youth and let them know that the sky is the limit. Every little bit helps.

MAYA JAI PINSON actress, executive producer, motivational speaker and children’s book author

Balancing school, friends, and extracurricular activities can be difficult for any 15-year-old. But most 15-year-olds don’t also have a busy acting career, a published children’s book, and a full schedule of motivational speaking appearances, producing films, and radio & TV interviews. Then again, Maya Jai isn’t like most 15-year-olds. With over a dozen acting credits to her name, Maya Jai is a high-school Sophomore who has already made a name for herself across an impressive spectrum of media. Not only is Maya starring as lead actress this summer in her film I’m Ready, she just landed a principal lead role in the new TV Series Vice Squad: NYC playing the role of Gabby. Maya’s 2nd children’s book Magic the Green Pillow is scheduled to be released in 2021. Maya finds time to speak to children and adults alike about the importance of balancing work and play in their lives with her “Stop, Drop, Work, then Play” method. Maya has countless volunteer hours at various Children Hospitals, YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs, the Ronald McDonald Charity House, Child Care Centers, tutoring math, local food pantries and preparing sandwiches for the homeless. Maya certainly has the experience to back up her words. On top of her busy professional schedule, she also maintains a consistently high GPA. This talent and passion for achievement has led to Maya being featured in the Washington Post Magazine, named as one of the 2018 20 Under 20 most Inspiring Teens, The Washington Informer, front page of the Baltimore Times, The Dream Teen & His Favor Teen Magazines, SESI Magazine, the WJLA TV news network, chosen as the Decatur, IL Girl of Merit and BMORE Lifestyle’s Go Girl of the Week in addition to a wide variety of other print, radio and TV segments. Considering all this, it might be tempting to ask if there’s anything Maya can’t do. But with someone this accomplished at such a young age, there’s an even more fitting question. JACOB HOPKINS THE SELF-PROCLAIMED VOICEOVER MASTER Words + Interview By Tyrone Davis Jacob Hopkins is a young actor most known for “The Amazing World of Gumball” and the sitcom, “The Goldbergs”. The self-proclaimed voiceover master (title and degree still pending) and I spoke about his acting experiences, the work that goes into voice acting, his love for martial arts, keeping busy during quarantine and more.

First off, Happy Belated Birthday! How did you celebrate? Thank you! How else would you celebrate an 18th birthday than six hours of paintball with the boys?

PHOTO: TIM SCHAEFFER AT CELLAR DOOR STUDIOS

How has being active in the entertainment business at an early age influenced your viewpoint on life? I’ve been acting ever since I was just shy of 5 years old. I had to adapt to an adult world and business at such a young age (while being guided and educated about said world by my parents, of course). I built and formed effective social skills, learned what hard work really meant and was able to speak and perform in front of large crowds early in my life. I got to experience years of work that my peers wouldn’t experience until years later in their lives. I definitely mentally matured earlier than most. For those who don’t know, tell us about “The Goldbergs” and your character, Chad Kremp. The Goldbergs is a sitcom that follows the 80’s lives of the Goldberg family. I play Chad Kremp, Adam Goldberg’s best friend. Chad is the cooler and more confident out of the two but he is definitely a huge film and video game dork like Adam. He’s seen Tron 16 times and loves Star Wars and Nintendo to death…his mom’s actually kind of worried. He’s kind-hearted, a tad goofy and loves Adam like a brother. What was your most memorable moment on set? I remember every moment of the very first episode I worked on: The Kremps. It was the entire Kremp family introduction, focusing mainly on Virginia Kremp and Beverly Goldberg’s rivalry and Chad Kremp and Adam Goldberg’s blossoming friendship. Meeting Sean Giambrone for the first time is one of my favorite times on set. We hit it off instantly and remain

TWENTY4SEVEN MAGAZINE

tight friends to this day. And Wendi McLendon-Covey…oh boy. She is a riot. One of my first scenes I shot on set was with her and I totally was not prepared for her masterful improv skills. I didn’t get most of her jokes until years later (I was 11 at the time) and I won’t repeat them here, but I was completely caught off guard. I was in awe at how much she could come up with on the spot and it actually taught me how to just go with your instincts in comedy. You never know what you’ll come up with. A few years ago, we interviewed Sam Lerner who plays Geoff Schwartz on the show. Have you shared any scenes with him? If so, what was that like? I haven’t had any scenes with Sam yet but I have met him many times on set. He is a cool dude and really funny on camera. Rock on, Sam. Until Chad and Geoff cross paths… Tell us something about yourself that most don’t know. I am actually insanely close to a third degree black belt in Taekwondo. I have been doing martial arts for half of my life and I don’t ever plan on stopping! Explain the difference in preparation between physically acting on camera and voice acting. Acting on camera requires more skill in your body language and facial reactions. You really have to be in the moment and be natural. Voice acting, however, requires an advanced and skilled vocal range. You have to have complete control over your voice (range, volume, tone, pitch, speed, articulation) and portray every emotion solely through your voice. It’s so fun to use your creativity through your voice and make it real for the character portrayed.

TWENTY4SEVEN MAGAZINE

Explain your relationship with martial arts. As I previously mentioned, I’ve been doing Taekwondo for half of my life now (9 years to be exact). It is a staple in my livelihood; I can’t imagine being me without it. Taekwondo not only makes me strong but it makes me feel strong mentally. It also creates confidence in my other abilities. I always think to myself, “If I can punch through 20 inch and a half boards with the same hand nonstop, fight three black belts at once and run and double kick off of a wall, then what is to stop me from accomplishing this?” Who are your “Top 5” martial artists of all time? 5. Chuck Norris 4. Bruce Lee 3. My Grand Master Lee 2. My Master Hector 1. My Master Shane I’m going to throw a few names out there. Say whatever comes to mind. A. Gerad Best musician/brother in the entire universe. B. Terrell Ransom Jr. Goldfish with legs/coolest bro. C. Boot Crew Drew “The Boot Crew is here to teach you a lesson!” What are your thoughts about the current COVID-19 pandemic and how has it affected you in your day to day life? It is definitely difficult to isolate myself from all my friends and adjust to a new life of quarantine but if there is anything I’ve

TWENTY4SEVEN MAGAZINE

10

learned from Desmond Hume on the TV show Lost, it is that quarantine is a chance to reflect on yourself and become more productive than ever. We need to use this time of isolation wisely by working, exercising, finding ways to enrich our lives and connecting with friends and family the best that we can. Don’t just lie in bed all day: find activities that genuinely make you happy and better yourselves. We’ll get through this. Just have hope! What are you currently doing to stay busy during this quarantine? As a senior in high school, I usually spend my mornings doing school work, Zoom classes and researching all my college acceptances. After that, I do a 45 minute Taekwondo Zoom class and shower. Then, I draw, play my drums, lay down some voice over demos, spend time with my family, and when all is said and done, I sit back in my chair and play some Animal Crossing. Name 2 things about yourself that this situation has caused you to change. I’ve drastically had to change my way of education. More than ever, I have to teach myself my school work…I don’t have the luxury of just walking up to my teachers to ask them questions. I also can’t go to my dojo to train, which has caused me to get creative and set up a personal dojo in my garage for my Zoom classes with my masters. What is the first thing you are going to do when all of this is over with? Ride my bike, take in some fresh air and train at my dojo. Nothing too dramatic. I just want to resume my regular life. Lastly, how can people connect with you via social media? *Read this in a 50’s announcer’s voice*. Tired of celebrities ranting about mumble rap? Want something new, fresh, but classic? Then you’re in luck! Follow Jacob Hopkins, the selfproclaimed voiceover master (title and degree still pending) on Instagram at @hopkinsjake and Twitter on @hopkinsjacob5! The only thing this young lad rants about is how much he wants Green Lantern: The Animated Series to return! See you there and stay safe and healthy!

JAMISON SCOUT

Which of your voice acting roles are the most challenging and why? There definitely can be challenging times. For example, when I needed to sing opera when voicing Gumball Watterson. I’ve never sang opera before but I trained with my vocal coach to do so and worked with a big time opera director in London as well - and low and behold I was singing opera! Gumball Watterson has so much color and personality to him. Sorry, I meant personalities. In every episode he always becomes a different person, whether it’s very brief or for the entire episode (bad mood Gumball, Beetlejuice, the entire Watterson family). He talks insanely fast, yells A LOT and has impeccable comedic timing. Gumball is the most fun I’ve ever had voice over wise so far.

I grew up a huge Nickelodeon fan and a few of my favorite shows on the network were “All That” and “Kenan & Kel”. How does it feel to have become a member of the reboot? It feels pretty unreal that I’m continuing a legacy. It was a really successful show back in the 90’s. I am glad to be a part of it.

what ways do they shine brightest? They have been so supportive throughout this journey by sacrificing so much for me. They have helped make me a better actor and overall person. They are both music educators so they shine through their passion for teaching kids.

What has it been like working with Kel Mitchell, who is both in the reboot and an original cast member? He is so nice and fun to work with. He brings great energy to every sketch he does so it is easy to build off of him. He knows what we are going through so he helps us whenever he can. He is a great teacher for us.

I was young when I saw “Roots” for the first time but my mother made sure I saw those types of projects growing up. Seeing those films early helped shape me into who I am today. Explain your experience working on 2019’s “Harriet”? It was so great and an overall amazing experience. I knew a little bit about Harriet Tubman before I filmed but I learned so much about who she truly is through this process. Being able to stand in a real cotton field and seeing some of the things our ancestors had to go through made me a lot more appreciative of what we have today. It also gave me a strong sense of pride for my culture and how strong we are.

Is there anything that you have learned from Kel? He is really focused when it comes to his work. He makes sure he gets every note the director gives him and he is not afraid to ask questions. This stands out to me because there can be a lot happening at once so you have to listen and focus. What has been the funniest moment on set so far? It is really funny when we mess up during filming. Even though we rehearse the lines and block a whole lot, we still flub a few times. It’s funny when we fumble with props or mix up lines. We just laugh it off and try again.

Who are some of the characters you play on the show, which do you think is most popular and why? Out of the characters that have aired, Eureekah the Slightly Off Psychic is my most popular. She is a psychic that gets everything wrong. She is my first recurring character. Name your “Top 5” Nickelodeon shows of all time. My top 5 Nickelodeon shows are Sam & Cat, Victorious, The Thundermans, Henry Danger and SpongeBob SquarePants. Tell us about your Black History Month posts on Instagram. Did you accomplish what you set out to do? I decided I wanted to post daily and highlight a different person or event in black history. I didn’t wanna focus on the negative, I wanted to show the positive and how amazing we are. I wanted to educate and empower and I think I did. I think I taught things that aren’t in textbooks. You had a lot of great information in those posts. Which ones were most important to you and why? The most important one to me was the one I did about Zozibini Tunzi. She is the first black Miss Universe to win from South Africa and the first woman to win with naturally textured hair. What makes it even more meaningful is that she is not what society considers “perfect”. She doesn’t have this long flowing hair with fair skin, yet she is just as beautiful. That was empowering to me.

Tell us about your character, Anger in the film. She is Harriet’s niece and initially, she just follows along with whatever her master says. She does not cause trouble. When Harriet came to save her, she was relieved. I felt like she gained confidence when she was rescued. What was your most intense scene in the film and explain what was going on in your mind in that moment? The rescue scene was the most intense. I had to hold a gun. It was kind of heavy so my hand was shaking. I was trying hard to stay focused while holding it. I’m going to throw a few names out there. Say whatever comes to mind. A. Zendaya - Shake it up B. Cynthia Erivo - Harriet C. Sammy Approved - Hair goals What do you love most about your sisters? We have similar interests surprisingly. We all love performing. We make up songs and dances around the house. I got them addicted to TikTok too. I also love that they are my biggest fans. They know all the words to my songs, even the ones that haven’t been released yet. They know all my lines in my All That sketches and scream EVERY time they see me on TV. It makes me so proud. You also create music and have written and produced two records. Tell us about them. The first one is called Truly Me. It is about being true to who you are regardless of what others want you to be. The second, Time Off is about taking a break and treating yourself. Pick one: A. Instagram or TikTok - TikTok!!! B. Books or Movies - Movies C. Out on the town or In the house (on your off days) - Out on the town

Words + Interview By Tyrone Davis

What did you think about the Oscar winning animated short, “Hair Love”? It left a lasting impression on me. The day I saw it, I had just complained about how I hated my hair because it was hard to manage. A few minutes after I saw the short film, both my mom and I were nearly in tears. It made us appreciate our coils even through the struggles.

The TV network, Nickelodeon has been entertaining children and cultivating young talent for decades. Representing the latest generation of talent, Aria Brooks is currently a cast member of Nickelodeon’s reboot of “All That”, a comedy sketch show that I was a big fan of growing up. Aria has also appeared in 2019’s “Harriet” with Cynthia Erivo and creates music as well. She and I discuss “All That”, working with veteran actor, Kel Mitchell, her upcoming music project and more. Enjoy!

Being from Atlanta, has the culture of black people thriving in all facets influenced you at all? It is definitely influential seeing so many black people succeeding in their fields. I look up to them and hope to achieve the same success one day.

Lastly, what is next for Aria Brooks? There is nothing set in stone yet but I would like to release an album this year. I write songs a lot and I would love to release them this year.

How influential have your parents been in your life and in

VALERIA JAUREGUI STARS AS MAGGIE HOLLISTER IN FOX’S HIT SERIES, “DEPUTY”. Words + Interview By Lucky Smith PHOTO BY X LEVEL INC. + JORGE CAMPOS

Valeria Jauregui is a talented young lady who stars as Maggie Hollister on Fox’s hit series, “Deputy”. She and I talked about her experience on the show, working with Stephen Dorff, competing on “La Voz Kids USA” and how she is keeping herself busy during quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You can currently be seen on Fox’s hit series, “Deputy”. Tell us about the show and your role as Maggie Hollister. Deputy blends the spirit of a classic Western with a modern-day attitude and emotionally driven, visceral storytelling. Featuring an ensemble of ambitious and complicated human beings who won’t rest until justice is served, Deputy brings a gritty authenticity to the modern cop drama.

Who/What inspires you and why? I get inspired a lot on the daily by many different things and people. My family members inspire me because they are all very wise and hardworking. As for celebrity inspirations, I’d say Natalie Portman, Samuel L. Jackson, Caitlin Stacy, Jennifer Lopez, Jim Carrey and so many more actors and actresses, directors and musicians.

My role as Maggie has been really fun to play because she is sweet, sarcastic and very caring. We like to joke around on set about how she is the most understanding 14-year-old there ever was. Playing her is challenging in a sense where I have to keep in mind that still, she is way younger than me and being 14, you think you know everything when you don’t.

Tell us about the Holy Mother of Makeup Movement. The launch of the Holy Mother of Makeup brand marks the first time a campaign showcases and embraces the uniqueness of Latinas including different body types and skin tones. It brings them together for the common goals to empower each other and celebrate their uniqueness while all utilizing the same HMM Divine Intervention eye shadow palette. They are also vegan and cruelty free!

Stephen Dorff has had some longevity as an actor, starting when he was very young as well. Our editor says that one of his favorite films that Stephen was in was “The Gate” (1987). What has working with him been like? It’s awesome. Stephen is so sweet; we are always joking around with whatever is happening in that episode with our relationship as father-daughter; in the episodes where I have a boyfriend, he would always come up to me and be mad and act overprotective as a father would. He would give me some advice here and there when I had a scene with him. I learned a lot from him! What has been some of the standout moments while filming? Anytime we had a horse in a scene was a fun experience. In episode four, there is a scene where we are in a barn and while shooting that, the horse we had in the background stuck out his head out and peeked at the camera. We were laughing about it for a while and it ended up being put into the episode! Go watch it! What was it like competing on “La Voz Kids USA”? Still, to this day, it was one of the best experiences of my life. I spent most of my 7th grade year in Orlando filming the show. The experience taught me a lot of things that I still carry with me today. Vocal discipline, like not drinking milk or eating anything dairy that would cause mucus to keep a clean throat, getting enough rest every night to be able to wake up to our 5:00 am vocal training classes. I learned essential things like breath control, choreography and how to handle a mic. I still keep in contact with my closest friends from the competition. I have dear memories from it that I will never forget.

Do you have any upcoming plans involving music? I am working on writing right now but definitely hope to release an EP maybe in the next year or so! How do you feel about the COVID-19 pandemic? Also, what are some of your peers saying about it? I feel it is a terrible thing and staying home is vital to help it go away. My friends agree with me so we are all social distancing right now. Stay safe, wash your hands, wear masks if you need to go out to get food and stay updated on the situation. What are you doing to cope while quarantined? Well, doing school of course. I’m also taking the time to do a whole bunch of stuff I’ve wanted to do for a while. Painting, reading, writing songs, playing guitar, watching classic movies I haven’t seen, cooking, learning to drive, etc. Honestly, there is so much stuff to do at home and I still have days where I feel like there is nothing to do. That is normal and I think it is okay just to do nothing some days too! Are you binge watching any shows? Also, what is the first thing you plan to do once this is all over? Rick and Morty…it is such a funny show! I’m also watching all of the movies that have won Best Picture at the Oscars. When this is over I am going to see my friends! Lastly, how can people find you on social media? I am on Instagram @valeria_jauregui.

Cool! Let’s talk about Disney+’s “Diary of a Future President” and your role as Bobby Cañero-Reed. Diary... is a coming of age comedy/drama. It centers around the Cañero-Reeds, a Cuban-American family living in Miami. I play Bobby, older brother to Elena, the main protagonist. The show follows Elena through the trials of middle school and beyond to the White House. Bobby and Gabi (our mom) have their own storylines that deal with identity and growth. It is definitely a show that I think the whole family can enjoy together. It is very relatable. How does your character progress during the series? When you first meet Bobby, he appears to be a pretty chill guy, cruising through life. He is in 8th grade and thinks he is on top of the world but as the season progresses, you begin to realize that there are more layers to him. He starts to open up about his feelings regarding all the changes happening in his life.

CHARLIE BUSHNELL IF I WERE PRESIDENT... Words + Interview By Tyrone Davis Meet Charlie Bushnell. The young actor stars as Bobby Cañero-Reed in Disney+’s “Diary of a Future Present” and during this interview, he and I spoke about Netflix’s “Stranger Things” inspiring him to act, his experience working on Diary, what he likes to do for fun and what he would do if he were president.

You come from a family of entertainers. Explain that for us. Yes I do! My dad is a musician...a bass player. His side of the family is super musical. My grandmother and aunt are singers and my grandfather is a drummer. My uncle, John Kavanagh is also a very accomplished actor. Explain your inspiration from Netflix’s “Stranger Things”. Watching season one of Stranger Things was what inspired my interest in acting. I clearly remember binge watching the whole season in one day and thinking, “Damn, I want to do that”. The idea of bringing a story to life seemed like so much fun. Stranger Things is definitely one of my favorite shows of all time. If there is ever an open role or something, hit me up, lol. Season 4 is coming out soon. Are you looking forward to it?

TWENTY4SEVEN MAGAZINE

Also, who is your favorite character on the show? Absolutely! I’m such a big fan of the show and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I don’t have one favorite character. If I had to choose, my top three would be Hopper, Steve and Dustin. Not in any particular order though. How did you get your start in acting? I had no idea that I wanted to be an actor until I was thirteen but I always loved entertaining my family and friends and making them laugh. That summer I went to an acting/film camp and that was it. I was all in. Later that year, I met my amazing manager and agents, started taking acting classes and auditioning. Getting the audition for Diary of a Future President was like hitting the jackpot!

What has it been like working with Gina Rodriguez? I love Gina so much. She is one of the warmest, kindest and most talented people I have ever met. She directed the first episode and really helped set the tone for the rest of the season, which was just the best experience ever. She is incredibly generous and taught us so many things, not just about acting but also filmmaking in general. What was the funniest moment on set and why? There was never a dull moment on set and we were always having fun and making each other laugh but I think the scene in (Ep. 3) where Bobby and his friends put a bra on a pillow and are trying to figure out “Miami Second Base” was the most hilarious! If you could be president, name 5 things that you would implement/change. If I could be president, I would ban homework! Just kidding. Actually, I’m not kidding. Seriously, the first thing I would do is bring together a team of the smartest, most creative people to work together to solve our biggest issues. I would also work to bring more awareness to the global warming crisis. I would find a way to reduce the amount of food waste in the world by redirecting excess food to people who need it. Also, can we please bring back kindness?? Lastly, I would have school start at 10 AM every day. Now being part of the Disney family, what are your “Top 5” Disney films? 1. Remember the Titans 2. Any of the Marvel/Avengers movies. If I had to pick one it would be Avengers: End Game. 3. Any of the Star Wars movies… 4. Finding Nemo 5. Toy Story There are so many! It’s hard to choose!! Pick one: A. Instagram or TikTok - Instagram. To be honest I don’t even have TikTok because I feel like if I get it I will never be able to put my phone down, lol.

B. Marvel or DC - I love them both but definitely Marvel! Those are some of my favorite movies. C. PlayStation or Xbox - I play Xbox so I’m going to have to go with that but a lot of my friends prefer PlayStation. D. Ice Cream or Jell-O - Ice Cream all the way…No question! My junior year of high school, we had to go through 9-11 and its aftermath. With you being in high school dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, how have you been affected? Well, my family and I have been super lucky. We are all safe and healthy. My heart goes out to all the people who are being affected by the Coronavirus. I’m a freshman in high school this year and due to COVID-19 we had to switch to an online school situation…that has been the biggest change. I really miss seeing my friends, going out to eat, going to the beach… you know, everyday stuff that we took for granted. The best thing we can all do is to stay home and social distance until it is safe to go out. I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all the people on the frontline. All the nurses, doctors, grocery store workers, postal workers, restaurant workers and so many more who are risking their lives to keep us healthy, fed and connected. I love The Avengers but these people are the real heroes. What does someone your age think about the future under the current circumstances? Well, I can only speak for myself but I feel optimistic about the future. As scary and sad as this has been, there have been some positive things too. I feel like people are working together more and a lot is being learned. I hope the virus goes away soon! What are you doing to stay busy during quarantine? For the first half of the day I’m doing online classes for school and keeping up with my work and then once I’m done with that I’ll usually spend most of my time staring at my dogs and facetiming my friends, doing all the things that I’ve wanted to do but never had time for. Also, I have gotten to spend a lot of quality time with my family. We watch movies and play games, talk, laugh…that part has been really nice actually. What is your favorite video game right now and of all time? Good question. Lately I’ve been playing a lot of Minecraft and Fortnite with my friends, but I’ve also started playing Clash of Clans and Star Wars Battlefront 2 again. And I don’t really have a favorite game of all time, but I would say the game I’ve played most consistently is Fortnite. What is the first thing you are going to do once all of this madness is over? The first thing I’m going to do is go out with my friends. I don’t care what we do. I just want to hang out, lol. Maybe see a movie or go to the beach…I don’t know! Lastly, how can people keep up with you on social media? You can find me on Instagram @iamcharliebushnell and on Twitter @cbushnell15. Thanks for having me!
