Philosophy

Experience

In my opinion, a product can be an intangible feeling, an aroma, or even fond memories. In that sense, the artifact becomes part of the process, and the evoked feeling becomes the end product. As an advise to my future self, it is important for the designer to evolve and stay relevant. The designer must become a problem solver, not just in his career, but also in mundane aspects of daily life.

Context

My design approach aims to tackle the issue of medicine circulation, with a more cultural and personal approach. Knowing many indegenous tribes value wearable artifacts, as a way of expression and identity, I have designed my product around empowerment, movement and personal expression. I also attempt to tackle the problems perpetuated by a mostly inaffluent population, whose people see mysticism and superstition as a way of life.

Soft touch

觸摸

Eating and sharing a meal as a family or a group of friends, is a very intimate ritual that we perform everyday. When we sit down and chat over food, it shows our friendship and our mutual love for gastronomy. For importantly, sharing food is also a form of expressing the level of intimacy. Metaphorically, it is a way of embracing your kins and friends,

Concept

概念

So the challenge is how do I express the essence of embrace through crockery materials like porcelain and china-ware ? The initial source of inspiration came from one of a life-sized sculptured by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In the example ( right ), great attention is paid to small details , like the effects of finger contact on drapery and skin. I think in the context of an Embrace, important essence can be engrained in small details such as indents caused by skin-contact.

The People’s Bowl

Intention

Features stackable boxes

To put it bluntly, The People’s Bowl is your ordinary everyday set of crockery. It is comprised of 5 different bowls, each with unique little details that represents the main cultures of Singapore. But after all, it is only a bowl, you may ask. Whats so special? Our answer is; look beyond the bowl. The modern cutlery set, or a bowl to be specific, serves a simple function; a vector to contain substenance, of which the user can consume.

Japanese lap joint

We want to reinvent the bowl. However, not as in visceral, æsthetical, functional, nor ergonomical, but cultural.

Concept

The People’s Bowl is an artifact, the centre piece for something much grander. Our intention is to reflect the spirit of Singapore, in all its past, present and even the future. In the midst of the SG50 marketing frenzy, public perception of the true Singapore spirit is clouded by little red stickers, collectible souvenirs, LEGO bricks and other mass-produced gimics. We forget to celebrate the transient nation, where people have come and went, from past, present and future. We forget to celebrate our transient people, opportunistic, hardworking, tenacious, whom has carried the nation on their backs

Outcome The solution is something familiar, something that has been used throughout the past, present, and will be in the future. The Bowl that is recognisable, reliable. The bowl that has carried past legacies and will last to carry ours, The People’s Bowl.
