Did you know that eight out of every ten trees that are planted grow to be adult trees. The other two are attacked and destroyed by insects and animals before they grow into adult trees. Sometimes, young trees perish because of inadequate water or sunlight. Fire is another reason why trees die.

Did you know, according to statistics, we throw away 5.1 million whole potatoes every day? Growing our own vegetables will help to reduce the amount of household waste. Growing your own vegetables does not require a plot of land, you can begin by planting seedlings in paper-pulp egg trays. This method is eco-friendly and also reduces trauma towards the young plants when you need to repot them. All you have to do is tear out a chunk of the tray and put it into a bigger pot for the next phase of growth. Some vegetables you can consider growing in Singapore’s climate are kang kong, kai lan, chye sim, spinach, lettuce, carrots, tomatoes and egg plants.

Take a walk outside and bring back a pebble, stone or rock. Now, let’s turn this pebble, stone or rock into something colourful and special. Bring out all your art materials, paint, crayons, markers, etc. You might want to consider sticking stuff onto your pebble too. There’re no restrictions, so get creative!

Trees help cool down the atmosphere. They can bring down your air conditioning costs by up to 20%

Go out into nature and find six different types of leaves. Do not pluck them from plants, there are plenty of fallen leaves on the ground for you to choose from. Next, let the leaves dry somewhere where there is sunlight. Afterwhich, place them in between the pages of a thick book and allow them to be pressed for a couple of days. Then it’s done!

Did you know the tallest mountain in the solar system is Olympus Mons, located on Mars? Mountains make up about one-fifth of the world’s landscape, and provide homes to at least one-tenth of the world’s people. The world’s tallest mountain, Mount Everest (29,035 ft), is actually shorter than Mauna Kea, an inactive volcano on the island of Hawaii. Mauna Kea, when measured from its base, which is below sea level, is 33,465 feet. If you stand Mauna Kea and Mount Everest next to each other, Mauna Kea would be 4,436 feet taller!

Like winds and sunsets, wild things were taken for granted until progress began to do away with them. Now we face the question whether a still higher “standard of living” is worth its cost in things natural, wild and free. For us the minority, the opportunity to see geese is more important than television, and the chance to find a pasque-flower is a right as inalienable as free speech. – Aldo Leopold (1886-1948) an American ecologist, forester, and environmentalist

Collect any kind of scrap materials you can find, old newspapers, magazines, cereal boxes, sweet wrappers, etc. Cut out the parts you find interesting and make a collage (any size you prefer) of the cut-outs. Make your collage as interesting and colourful as you can. When you are done, frame your masterpiece up! If you want to challenge yourself further, construct your collage based on the theme, “Embrace Nature.

If children do not dip their toes in the waters of unsupervised social activity, they likely will never be able to swim in the sea of civic responsibility. If they have no opportunities to dig in the soil, discover the spiders, bugs, birds, and plants that populate even the smallest unpaved playgrounds, they will be less likely to explore, appreciate, and protect nature as adults. – Monke, 2005 To answer nature’s urgent call to action, visit http://www.wwf.org now.
