Community advice in new animal management plan
Blondie, the Dogue De Bordaux breed of Mastif owned by Lewiston veterinarian, Dr Chris Girling, might look totally disinterested with District Council of Mallala’s review of its Animal Management Plan. But unlike six-yearold Blondie, you can give your opinion on any planned changes to laws relating to pets, particularly dogs, and other animals. Public comment is invited through representation on a new council committee.

Big year for local Red Cross Two Wells Red Cross has raised an amazing $15,650 this year. “This is the highest total ever and we cannot thank enough all those who have helped,” secretary Jasmin Daniele said. The branch held its AGM on June 1, with the following members re-elected: president, Valerie Vercoe, secretary, Jasmin Daniele and treasurer, Mollie Frost. Charmaine Bryant, is a new member, replacing Valmai Quinlan, who retires from Red Cross this year. Jasmin said Valmai would be missed. “Valmai has always been a very capable vice president and has given many hours to assist over the years she has been with us at Two Wells,” Mrs Daniele said. “Thanks Valmai – we will all miss your helpful and happy attitude in all you’ve been involved in at the branch. LETTER to the Editor
Great effort with The Echo Congratulations to the Two Wells and Lewiston Community! I was fortunate to be among the large gathering this week to celebrate the new joint venture between the Two Wells Regional Action Team and the Plains Producer to produce the newlook monthly Echo newsletter. Thirty odd years ago Two Wells taught me the importance of the word ‘community’ when we worked together to build its “new” primary school. I could never have imagined a timely conversation and a few willing people committed to building a better community through sharing ideas and information via a one page newsletter

wish you all the best for the future.” This year’s great fundraising effort started with Australia Day ceremonies and ended with Red Cross badge day in May. In between these events, there has been lots going on – thanks to Bek and Dylan Stodart and baby ‘Iggy’, who along with Ann and David have been able to call on their many friends in the Mallala and Two Wells communities for help. Red Cross is now waiting for baby competition results to be finalised (with fingers crossed). “We do have a small problem– we now need a new baby entrant for 2011,” Mrs Daniele said. If anybody has a child under two years old and is interested, please contact Jasmin on 8520 2233 or Mollie on 8520 2073.
would result in today’s Echo. But I do believe in the African proverb: “It takes every one in the village to educate a child.” Thank you to all, the thousands of community minded people, who over the years have willingly participated in sharing in community news to the advantage of all its community, enabling the Echo to grow into its new phase of development. A special thanks to Steve Kennedy and Andrew Manuel and their respective teams. I wish the Echo every success and look forward to reading it on-line each month. Alan Young, West Beach

D
i Meaney has been at it again. Travelling the globe! This time word got around Di was returning to Vietnam with her daughter, Chelsea, in April this year. And next thing they knew there were eight people going with them. Six local ladies, Judi Frost, Mollie Frost, Christobel Crabb, Franci Brechin, Elaine Dempsey and Yolanda Cannizzaro were the first starters. Margaret Moffatt from Mallala was next, then Barbara Secomb, a former local who now lives in Burra. Barbara’s son, Greg, lives and works in Hanoi and she was eager to visit him. All arrangements were finalised and April 24 soon came around with an early departure of 6.30 am from Adelaide Airport. The group toured Vietnam for two weeks, with plenty of fun, culture, shopping, food and adventure experienced along the way. Tired but happy the ladies arrived home on Mother’s Day ready for a rest after an action-packed but fabulous trip to the most wonderful and exciting country of Vietnam. Pictures supplied by Di, with excerpts from her diary.
“Chào Dón”
Di’s Vietnam Diary Day 1 We first set about helping the ladies sort out the complex currency of the Vietnam Dong. As we lined up at the ATM outside our hotel there were giggles of delight as everyone proclaimed being a millionaire for the first time ever. ( 1 million Dong equals about $57). Crossing the streets was the next major hurdle – the idea being to use a nanosecond of opportunity between motorbikes, step off the side walk and confidently keep walking as the motorbikes weave around you! Touring The first tour began on day two. Stopping first on Unicorn Island we visited a family-run coconut candy workshop. After sampling the candy we were unable to resist purchasing five blocks for 100,000 VDong and get one free! (then we had to carry it around for the rest of the day) We were invited to hold the most enormous python. While some took up the offer, others emphatically declined. Another relaxing boat ride along more canals took us to a delightful tropical garden where we were treated to an eight course gourmet meal whilst listening to live traditional music. After all this, of course, an opportunity to shop!
Welcome ... to Vietnam

Front, Yolanda Cannazaro, Margaret Moffatt, Mollie Frost, Chelsea Meaney, Barb Secomb, Franci Brechin and Elaine Dempsey (kneeling). ABOVE: A meal at Can Tho. Right: No fear of a python for Mollie Frost and, at rear, Judi Frost. Nah Trang We checked into our hotel on the sea front with magical views of the ocean and nearby islands, then went walking to watch all the colourful kites flying. Armed with towels, wearing ‘boardies’, we hastily purchased coolie hats and clamoured aboard yet another boat to cruise around the islands of Tre, Tam and Mun. This was to be a fun filled day made especially so by our guide for the day, Binh, who turned out to be a one man entertainment machine! First was a visit to an aquarium, then to go swimming and snorkelling in the warm tropical waters.
Three of our group hired bicycles and rode along the beach then off to have massages, manicures and pedicures. The rest chose to go to the mudbaths at Thap Ba Hot Spring Centre and wallow in a communal bath of hot mineral mud. Hanoi Barbara met up with her son, Greg, and we dined with him that night and learnt all about his important job in Vietnam assisting with removal of war time bombs. Unfortunately our ‘English speaking guide’ of Red River Delta to Halong Bay tour spoke very little English, so information was by ‘sign language’.
However, everyone enjoyed immensely the peace and tranquillity of gliding through the calm waters and relaxing on deck to watch the sunset. Sapa We boarded a night train to Sapathe mountain country and home to the black H’mong and red Dzau hill tribe people. Feeling refreshed we donned sneakers and back packs and set off for the day to hike the mountains with our pint sized guide Mee. It was a fascinating trek and the scenery was breathtaking. The second day in Sapa took in a beautiful waterfall with 300 steps to it and most were too

stiff to even contemplate the thought of further ascending and contented themselves with some local shopping! Surprise surprise! Back to Hanoi Highlights of our last two days in Hanoi were a visit to the preserved body of President Ho, a ride through the busy streets of the Old Quarter at eye level with the motor cyclists and buying bags. At last count we had 70 bags between 10 of us and we decided to rename our group “the bag ladies of Vietnam”! Boarding our plane for our flight home, our luggage was considerably more than when we arrived – especially for one dedicated shopper amongst us! TWDE0510

Aunger ponds reserve a natural treasure With Mark Webb If you get the opportunity it is well worth the walk through the Aunger ponds reserve. This reserve offers the opportunity for the public to view and appreciate a revegetation project that was initiated during the development of the Aunger estate. Aunger ponds reserve was developed as a flow control park, and the topography of the reserve is designed to collect excess storm water from the catchment area of the estate. The plantings within the reserve are a representation of the original vegetation of the Northern Adelaide Plains which was predominately Open Grasslands and Grassy
woodlands. Aunger Ponds reserve, on Lionel road, Lewiston, is a grassy woodlands landscape. There is a walking track that encircles the reserve, with park benches installed for community use. Take time to stop and study the life around you and marvel at the flora and fauna within this reserve. During spring, frogs are abundant. Frogs are a great way to monitor the environmental health of the system, as frogs need healthy
water and a good habitat to complete their life cycle. Since European settlement, native vegetation has been subjected to broad scale clearing resulting in only 14 per cent of pre-European vegetation cover remaining within the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges region. Aunger ponds reserve is within this region with only one per cent of the original vegetation remaining and much of this on roadsides. Planting similar species of plants on your property will provide vital habitats for native animals, prevent erosion, guard against soil salinity and is the basis for healthy catchments. You will also be a contributing to the environmental assets of the Adelaide plains. Together we can all make a difference to our environment. Aunger ponds reserve was established in the mid 90s, with developers funding the reserve by the sales of the land of the Aunger
Estate. Plantings were conducted by Mallala council with support from the local community. Our aim is to raise environmental awareness of the Aunger Ponds reserve to the community and the importance of the indigenous plants within for the following reasons: • To revegetate, rehabilitate and recognise the importance of remnant vegetation in the Mallala District Council region. • To work with landholders in the region to identify significant remnant vegetation. • To educate and promote awareness and importance of remnant vegetation in the region. Our next on-grounds works will be at: Thompsons Beach Shorebird Trail–Southern end on Sunday, July 11 at 9.30 am. If you are interested please contact Pat Wake: Email: twowellslewistonlandcare@ y7mail.com Facebook: Two Wells, Lewiston and Districts Landcare Group
Changes likely at Two Wells Visitor Information Centre Two Wells Visitor Information Centre could be open for full operating hours from January 2011. At this stage, it is not clear whether the centre will be a Two Wells Regional Action Team or District Council of Mallala (DCM) operation as the operating model has yet to be considered. DCM’s funding allocation to keep the centre open on reduced hours is almost exhausted, but council has allocated funds for the centre to remain open at reduced hours until the end of December. Council has also allocated $75,000 in the budget to install new toilets at the centre.
New Volunteers
Rebecca Helmons, Colleen Ryan and Jane Fitzgerald have started their training as volunteers at the centre and are ready to help out.
Dog Registrations due
Julie Jonas from Mallala council will be working from the centre during the dog registration renewal period. Dog registrations are due by August 31.
Computer classes
Anita Taylor has been committed to running computer classes every Wednesday and Friday at the centre, with a steady attendance at each session. Her continued enthusiasm as volunteer trainer and coordinator of the classes has been appreciated. Look out for classes run by school children in the future – teaching the modern uses of computer technology.

They arrived from the UK on the same weekend four likely lads brought Beatlemania to Adelaide ... The Echo continues its monthly feature into members of Two Wells Regional Action Team. This issue we spotlight Gerry and Cath Goulter. A regular column in the Echo sports section is “Gerry’s Jottings.”
G
erry Goulter has been a member of the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) committee since 2007, but he and Cath have also been involved in the community in many other ways. The weekend Gerry and his family first arrived in Australia was one of the most eagerly awaited weekends for Adelaide residents ever. On the second weekend in June 1964, Gerry, aged 32, Cath and their son Barry, 7 arrived in Australia for a new life. But they shared their arrival with four lads from Liverpool well known as the Beatles, who were performing in Adelaide that same weekend. Thirty thousand people crammed the city to welcome the Fab Four at the Town Hall and on the Friday an estimated 200,000 had lined the streets from the airport along Tapleys Hill road and Anzac Highway all the way into the city . While the Beatles left the country soon after, 46 years later Cath and Gerry are revelling in their Australian lifestyle. Home is where the heart is for this pair, and their heart has been in the Lewiston and Two Wells district for the past 18 years. The move from Kingston-uponThames, Surrey, UK was a big journey and one Cath hoped would bring a better upbringing for their son. It wasn’t long after they arrived in Australia that the pair became heavily involved in the Elizabeth community, where the family lived before moving to Lewiston. “We felt Australia would be a better place to raise children and we’ve not been disappointed,” Cath said. “We were advised the quickest way to get to know people in a new country was to join sporting clubs,” Gerry said. Gerry and Cath have given many hours to various organistions over

Gerry and Cath are willing helpers the years and said they enjoyed the lifestyle of Two Wells. “We’ve never felt like outsiders. We have just been accepted right from the word go,” Cath said. “It is a good life here in Two Wells,” Gerry said. “The street plan is heading in the right direction.” “It’s all about planning ahead.” “The future of Two Wells is looking good. “There is a great community here.” No stranger to committees, Gerry has been a member of Two Wells’ advancement committee, youth committee, community centre management committee, strategic planning committee, bowling club committee and Bowls SA ‘region nine’ committee, council’s bush fire
committee and friendship garden club. He also served as a councillor for District Council of Mallala’s Lewiston ward for seven years between 2000 and 2007. But cricket is one of the areas on which Gerry focussed a lot of his energy. He began playing for Elizabeth North Cricket Club the same year he arrived in Australia, became the secretary soon after and was later awarded life membership of the amalgamated Elizabeth District Cricket Club. He was a delegate to Para District Cricket Association and was vicepresident for three years. Since 1967, he has held various senior positions in the Adelaide Turf Cricket As-

sociation, including member of the executive committee and board of management for 23 years, as well as chairman, vice-chairman, general manager, tribunal member, assistant secretary and recording officer. Gerry was awarded life membership of Adelaide Turf Cricket Umpires Association and Adelaide Turf Cricket Association. Gerry was instrumental in resurrecting the Cricket Union of SA after a member of the Australian Cricket Board of Control contacted him. In 2000, Gerry was awarded an Australian Sports Medal for cricket administration. These days he continues to give his time to the Two Wells bowling club, the Friendship garden club, Community Centre management
committee, Friendship Force of Salisbury and Northern Districts, Adelaide Turf Cricket Association and TWRAT. With the same generous nature, Cath has spent a lot of her spare time dedicated to voluntary positions, including 25 years with St John Ambulance, secretary of Two Wells family history group, member of Two Wells Red Cross, co-ordinator of the friendship garden club, foundation member of the Probus Club and warden of St Pauls Anglican church. “Volunteering means we can make wonderful friends, meet interesting people and it makes you feel good about yourself,” Cath said. Thanks Cath, that’s advice worth sharing.

Comment on Buckland Park proposal RESIDENTS are encouraged to have their say on proposed rezoning required to develop the Buckland Park township. The Development Plan Amendment (DPA) for Buckland Park rezoning is open for public consultation until July 28. The DPA proposes to rezone horticulture land at Buckland Park to facilitate the orderly and economic establishment of a new growth area to support about 33,000 people. A conditional development approval has been granted for a broad Master Plan for the site and land division for Stage one of the development. Stage one contains 614 housing allotments, one school site, a display village centre and shopping and community service development. The developer will need to submit further plans for future stages to be fully developed within the next 25-years. Minister for Urban Development and Planning, Paul Holloway, said Buckland Park residential development project had already been comprehensively assessed using the Major Development process, the most stringent available under the state’s development laws.
n PORT WAKEFIELD ROAD
n BUCKLAND PARK SITE
“This separate rezoning process will establish a framework, consistent with the Buckland Park Master Plan, to assess individual housing, industry and community development applications for the area,” Mr Holloway said.
He maintained the development was positive for the area. “This long term residential project will generate job opportunities during its construction and provide positive benefits for the local economy,” Mr Holloway said. “Rather than being an isolated community, Buckland Park will be linked to nearby Virginia and will be handy to nearby jobs in Adelaide’s north including the employment generating land at Edinburgh Park.” The major development process has already planned for the extension of relevant infrastructure to the township such as mains water, gas and power supply to the area. Members of the public, industry and community associations, government agencies, local councils and other interested parties are invited to lodge submissions on the Development Plan Amendment. These submissions will then be considered by the independent Development Policy Advisory Committee, which will provide advice to Mr Holloway in determining the final Development Plan Amendment. Copies of the DPA are available from: •Department of Planning and Local Government
•City of Playford office • On the internet- www.planning.sa.gov. au/go/buckland-park-urban-growth-dpa • Written submissions should be submitted no later than 5pm on Wednesday, July 28 and addressed to: GPO box 1815, Adelaide SA, 5001 or emailed to dpac@saugov.sa.gov.au. public meeting A public meeting will be held on August 19 at Playford Civic Centre, at which time interested people can speak in relation to their submission on the DPA. Submissions need to clearly indicate whether or not they can be heard at the public meeting. The public meeting may not be held if there are no submissions or if no-one requests to be heard. For more information contact Amanda Berry on 8303 0798 or amanda.berry@ sa.gov.au. Information about the submission process and public meeting can also be found at the Department of Planning and Local Government website at www.dplg.sa.gov.au/go/buckland-park-urban-growth-dpa.
Local owners will help steer council’s new animal laws
LEWISTON veterinarian Dr Chris Girling, with greyhound, Lewis.
RESIDENTS of District Council of Mallala are facing changes to laws relating to pets and other animals. Council is in the process of forming an Animal Management Plan Advisory Committee (AMPAC) to review the current Animal Management Plan. Conscious of the large number of dog breeders and pet owners in its area, council resolved the committee would work best if it was represented by members of the public. Representatives are being sought for: a domestic pet owner of a dog(s); a non-owner of a dog; a domestic pet owner of a cat(s); a dog breeder who is professionally recognised (i.e. SACA membership); a greyhound breeder/trainer who is professionally recognised (i.e. SA Greyhound Association membership); a keeper of other animals, i.e. horses, goats, sheep, and a veterinarian who operates within the council area. Five nominations have so far been received. These
include greyhound trainer John Spoolder; keeper of other animals, John Newton and a domestic pet owner, Karen McColl, plus Sandra Foote and John Katakasi. Councillor Rudi Fabrici has been elected chairman of the committee, while the other councillors on the committee are Anne Picard and Terry Keen. There will also be two council staff on the committee. AMPAC will act as a reference group in the review of council’s Animal Management Plan, required under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995. Doctor Chris Girling is a veterinary surgeon at Noah’s Crossing Veterinary clinic in Lewiston. While owning and operating the clinic, Doctor Girling also breeds Dogue de Bordeaux– a breed of Mastiff. He said he was aware of the up coming review of the plan and hoped it would not affect the animal husbandry zone in the district too much.
RESIDENT GROUP PROMISES HELP WITH UPKEEP:
Tangari gets new look WE Deliver Daily Service There is some relief in sight for Two Wells residents who have been lobbying for a redevelopment of the drainage reserve in Tangari Estate. After months of lobbying, residents have taken a pro-active approach by forming the ‘Friends of Tangari’ committee, to assist with upkeep of the reserve. District Council of Mallala agreed to redevelop Tangari Estate’s drainage reserve, with assistance from ‘Friends of Tangari’. Two Wells Echo, July, 2010
The proposed improvements will be completed in 2010-11 and will include a compacted rubble pathway around the perimeter of the reserve, stone seating, preparation and planting of shrub beds, weed control and irrigation improvements up to a maximum cost of $7,000. DCM adopted a draft reserve development policy as a result of complaints from dissatisfied residents about the upkeep of the reserve and choice of lemon scented gums planted.
The policy is a key component which relates to community consultation where redevelopment of a reserve is considered. Council received 20 written submissions with a majority of residents indicating a preference for total redevelopment of the current reserve. The species of trees will be identified considering the reserve development policy, input from the community and advice from landscape construction services and council staff.

Scouts benefit from NHW generosity Two Wells scout group has received a generous $500 donation from Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) group. Scout leader, Ian Laughton said the funding was fantastic and would go towards camping equipment and accessories. “One of the scouts’ favourite activities is camping and the outdoors, we could do with some new sleeping bags and cooking equipment,” Mr Laughton said. “We are overwhelmed. It’s a fantastic donation.” Members of the NHW attended a scouts session on Thursday, June 17 and presented the group with the cheque. Mark Wasley from NHW said
the funds had been raised through local Blue Light Discos. “We wanted to put the money back into the community,” he said. “We had a think about which group would benefit most from additional funding and the scouts came to mind,” he said. The next Two Wells blue light disco event will be held on Friday July 30 from 7pm to 9.30pm in the Two Wells Community Centre. For only $5 per person, 8 –17year-olds can enjoy the night. It will be an extra-special disco as we will be celebrating our second birthday, so there will be lots of giveaways and prizes drawn throughout the night. Come and celebrate with Neighbourhood Watch.
Front: Kate Jackson, Lewis Copley, Luke Molloy, Dakota Daly. Back: Amy Paech, Kirsty Burgers, Cale Russell, Michael Schaffer, Logan Buttenshaw. Back seated: Dylan Russell. NHW back: Don Nicol, Patrick Porter, Ann Porter, Jennifer Nicol and Mark Wasley.
Invite for parents and children to join playgroup
Two Wells Playgroup would like to invite you to attend playground every Monday morning during school terms at the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre, 27a Gawler road, Two Wells. Playgroups provide parents and children with an opportunity to enjoy a positive, enriching, educational and safe environment for young children from birth through to school age. And Two Wells Playgroup is no exception. “At Two Wells Playgroup, we urge you to participate and provide feedback on a level with which you feel comfortable,” Two Wells Chil-
dren’s Centre administrator Helen Schild said. She said playgroup was a team effort and was not just about children’s play. “ It is a time for adults to chat and enjoy friendships, sharing stories and parenting ‘tips’,” Helen said. There are always new faces at Playgroup, so even if you have attended before in recent years, there is always a changing and improving vibe to be found. This year the group has enjoyed numerous ‘themed’ days- one being ‘Artist’s Day’ where the children created and took home various paintings
using different techniques. The centre also had an off-site outing to Snakes n’ Ladders in Gawler which was enjoyed by both the children and the parents/carers. There are always fun activities to participate in outside, and creative craft to sit down and enjoy inside. Playgroup begins at 9am, but arrival time is at your leisure. The centre asks for children to bring a piece of fruit, so it can be cut up and shared with the other children. ‘Fruit Time’is usually between 10 and 10.30 am and children sit down for a short period to eat.
This is a great time for the younger children to observe their older peers sitting down to eat a healthy snack. Clean up begins shortly after and we gradually start packing up for the morning. Playgroup usually finishes around 11.15am. The vision for playgroups across South Australia in general is to create the opportunity for every child to learn through quality play experiences while supporting their families/carers in their role as primary educators. Your first visit is free! And the usual cost of attending is $2.50 per family, not per child.
The centre hopes to see you soon! The location of the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre is ideal for young families, with a child-care and kindergarten on the one site. You can check out the website for more information regarding Playgroup, child-care and kindergarten at www.twowellskgn.sa.edu.au You may or may not know some of the families who attend Two Wells Playgroup If you have any enquiries, please check out the website or call the centre on 85202358.

PRIDE OF AUSTRALIA COURAGE MEDAL NOMINATION…
Teigan’s fighting spirit Lewiston triathlete Teigan Hall returned to her bike for the first time this month since an accident in February left her with multiple injuries. Her fight back has led the 17-yearold to a nomination for a Courage Medal in the Pride of Australia Awards. Two weeks ago Teigan returned to bike riding with her coach. “Teigan is back doing some junior training and with hard work we got her out on the bike for the first time,” said Teigan’s mum, Julie. “Her coach took her out one-on-one. She also went in the Queen’s birthday holiday fun run and was happy with her time and hopefully will resume full training as her confidence increases.”
With all of Teigan’s equipment destroyed in the accident, she now has a new bike. The training accident which left Teigan with a broken collarbone, fractured sternum, stitches to her face and a swollen knee was the result of a careless driver It happened just weeks before the state championships, for which she had been training hard for months. It has made her more determined to reach her dream of completing an iron woman challenge. The brave teen has far from given up her academic and athletic dreams, slowly rebuilding an exercise regime while recovering from her injuries and
completing year 12 at Trinity College. “I wasn’t allowed to train for three months,” Teigan said.“It affected me at school as well. In PE I missed out on the major aquatic course.” Teigan was training every day in February, but after three months recovery, has just started going to the gym again. “I really wanted to go back to school because I didn’t want to miss out on anything,” she said. Teigan is one of the first South Australians to be nominated for the new award category, which recognises an Australian who has overcome personal adversity through determination and strength of character.

Two very talented local footballers have reached significant milestones for the Two Wells football team. Congratulations to A grade captain, Scott Humphrys, (right), playing his 100th game – and to vice captain, Ned Seccafien, who has played 50 games. Scott, 23 and Ned, 20 reached their milestones on June 19, when the Roosters took on Mallala. Both footballers are very talented and are a credit to the success of the Two Wells A grade team. It is Scott’s third season captaining the Roosters, making him the youngest captain in the league. Ned was elected in the leadership group this year for his mature and committed approach to the football club. The club and Two Wells community wish them good luck. We look forward to them playing many more games for Two Wells Football Club. Two Wells Echo, July, 2010

Galloping towards better horse hoof health Owners and riders of horses and ponies will benefit from a new report on laminitis–the second largest killer of horses and ponies in Australia. The Rural Industries research and development corporation (RIRDC) report ‘Equine Laminitis – managing pasture to reduce the risk’ provides owners with practical information on managing their pastures to reduce the risk of the disease in horses and ponies. The report outlines how horse owners can reduce the level and concentration of sugar, starch and fructan in their pastures. High levels of these carbohydrates can cause laminitis in horses and ponies. Director of the Equine Laminitis Research Unit at the University of Queensland and co-

Pasture care key to preventing laminitis author of the report, Professor Chris Pollitt, said this report represented an important step forward in the understanding of pasture associated laminitis. “While there are still significant gaps in our knowledge about laminitis, a source of great frustration to horse owners and vets alike, we do know that what the horse or pony has eaten over the last few days, weeks or months may trigger laminitis,” Professor Pollitt said. “Pasture management techniques such as
timely slashing, proper fertilising and avoiding species high in sugar, starch and fructan can go a long way to reducing the risk of horses developing laminitis,” Professor Pollitt said. Laminitis is the second biggest killer of horses after colic and is the most serious disease of the equine foot. It causes the coffin bone of the foot to become detached from the inside of the hoof wall, and sometimes penetrates the sole of the foot. Laminitis causes dreadful suffering and in severe cases euthanasia is necessary. Most pastures in Australian are tailored for dairy cows, beef cattle and sheep, and are high in sugar, starch and fructan. When these types of pastures are exposed to intense sunshine, drought and cold stress,

these carbohydrates can increase three-fold. But with good pasture management, these conditions can be minimised. This painful and crippling condition, often called ‘founder’ can affect all breeds of horses, but ponies and horse breeds such as Arabs, Fjords, Morgans and Andalusians are more prone to the condition. The report was launched on June 4 at the Australian Equine Science Symposium by RIRDC senior research manager Dave Alden, and is the latest in a series of RIRDC reports focussing on improving horse health. The principal author is US based agronomist, Kathryn Watts. •The report is available at www.rirdc. gov.au.
