The CPPSC meets once every three months or more frequently if deemed necessary and currently has a vacancy for a representative from the Two Elizabeth Wells Council Ward. The committee makes decisions on funding applications for community-based development initiatives. It also administers council’s Community Partnerships Fund, guides community groups to regional, state and national level grant schemes and allocates funding for individual sport and cultural participation to assist individuals representing the DCM at state and/or national levels.

Homes committee

• The Mallala and Districts Homes Committee (MDHC) makes recommendations to council on accommodation needs for the community in the area. In collaboration with the Barossa and Districts Housing Association (BDHA), it also investigates funding opportunities for community housing initiatives, identifies future housing needs within the district and ensures accountability of community expenditure. Meetings are held once every four months or more frequently if deemed necessary and generally in the Mallala Council Chambers. Presently there are two vacancies.

Development board

• The Community Development Board encourages and assists people to become more involved in their local community, through the development of links and cooperation between council organisations, groups and individuals. The board publishes and distributes the bi-annual Business and Information Directory to all households in the council district, collates and distributes information kits to all new residents, manages the community bus and encourages and acknowledges the special contribution made by members of the community. The committee meets bi-monthly in February, April, June, August, October and December, with special meetings called in the alternative months as necessary. Meetings are generally held in the old council chamber at Two Wells. This committee also has two vacancies. Youth support available

Youth support in Mallala council area is available for 13–19 year olds who are looking to improve their future. Once a month, Employment Directions will be delivering youth case management services to teenagers in the Mallala area. The services aim to work through youth issues to devise plans of action to ensure youth are given the best chance to get their life back on track and achieve their goals. Starting on September 29, the sessions will be held on the fourth Wednesday of every month from 10am to 1pm.

Australia Day awards

Nominations are invited for the Australia Day Awards to be presented during Australia Day Celebrations in 2011. The Young Citizen Award is for persons aged up to 25 years as at 26 January, 2011 and the Citizen Award is for persons over 25 years as at that date. Garden honours Terry Post A garden has been created at the Two Wells Primary School to commenorate the late Terry Post. Mr Post served as groundsman at the school from 1999 to 2009. The garden was opened on September 17, during sports day, with Terry’s wife, Joan, daughters Nerida Bested (right) and Sonia Post and

grandchildren Jamie and Brooke Humphrys present for the celebration. Mr Post, who passed away last year, was heavily involved in the community through the melodrama and sporting groups. Mrs Post said Terry thoroughly enjoyed working in the school environment.

LEWISTON resident Paul Daniels, a volunteer at the Two Wells Visitor Information Centre, has been holidaying in Canada. Believe it or not, he managed to read a copy of the Echo! Paul is pictured in a park in the middle of Montreal, where his Echo browsing was interrupted when he was harassed by a wild and ferocious beast!

ocal government council elections are fast approaching with Two Wells ward receiving four nominations for the three available seats for District Council of Mallala. All of Lewiston ward’s four seats have been filled by one new candidate and three existing councillors, with only four nominations determining the outcome. Karen McColl is the new addition

while Anne Picard, Duncan Kennington and Tom Summerton will serve another term. Rudi Fabrici, Lewiston ward and Steve Kennedy, Two Wells ward are the only two councillors to withdraw from a position as councillor. A postal election will determine which three of the Two Wells candidates will represent the town in council meetings.

Postal voting forms will be distributed through a staggered mail out from October 25, with voting to close by post on November 12. Development concern

Veteran councillor Peppino (Joe) Daniele is nominating for his 35th year representing ratepayers on District Council of Mallala. Mr Daniele said he wanted to continue representing the community on issues such as the Two Wells main street urban development and Community Wastewaster Management Scheme (CWMS). “I believe the proposed urban development is totally wrong,” Mr Daniele said. “That really pushed me to stand again.” He said he believed additional shopping services should be located in the area proposed to accommodate

2,500 people on Mallala road, not in the main street of Two Wells. “I will do everything within my power to fight for this issue,” he said. Mr Daniele has been involved in the community since he arrived in the town in 1962. He’s been involved in many committees and projects during these years, including construction of the Two Wells primary school, community centre and Catholic church. “I am always available to listen to community problems. I always do my best to help everyone,” Mr Daniele said.

JAN HELEY Jan Heley moved to Two Wells for the open space, having previously lived in the northern suburbs. She has grown very fond of the little town, and said she was keen to represent Two Wells on council to fight for the rights of everyday people. “Some people don’t realise they have rights, even Jo Blow has rights,” Jan said. Jan has been instrumental in a public campaign to improve Tangari Estate’s reserve, which she said was unsightly and dilapidated. She said she would bring good negotiating skills to council, which she has demonstrated in her battle with council regarding the reserve.

A very keen gardener, Jan said now that she didn’t work full time, she would like to keep her brain active. Her working background includes community services and family support counselling. “Sometimes people need a voice and I’m prepared to be that voice,” Jan said. Projects of importance to Jan include the need for public transport and aged care services, protecting horticulture and horticulture industries from encroachment and ensuring rates are put to work on projects of direct community benefits. She also said any future development of Two Wells township should be sensitive to the town’s unique character.

‘Voice of the people’

Dedicated to helping humanity Tony Flaherty has had a passion for helping people since recovering from a mental illness. He has served two terms on District Council of Mallala including a stint as mayor. A retired soldier, Tony suffered depression and other illnesses after returning from combat in Vietnam. “I want to be an example for other people suffering depression that there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said. “If I can recover, so can they.” Tony works tirelessly to help

less fortunate people. As well as being president of Two Wells RSL, he volunteers at Mary Potter hospice for terminally ill people and counsels people in prison. Tony said his role as a Two Wells councillor was one he didn’t take lightly. “I’m dedicated to helping humanity. “Being in a position to assist the community is really important to me,” he said. Donating so much time to the community has earned Tony an Order of Australia medal.

Community at heart

Former police officer Mark Wasley recently returned to the district to retire and run a hobby farm. He has spent more than 30 years working in law enforcement, including as a member of Special Task And Rescue (STAR) forces and investigation teams. Mark worked on the Kennedy Royal Commission case investigating crime and corruption in Perth. Born and bred in Korunye, Mark returned to the area in 2005 and has been heavily involved in the community ever since. “Now that I’ve retired, I have the time to put back into the community,” Mark said. “I’d like to be on council to

be part of a team that achieves good results for the district,” he said. His community involvement includes membership of Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch group, member of the local Ag bureau, commodore of Small Boat Club of SA and member of Mallala and Districts Museum committee. Mark believes he will bring good communication skills and creative thinking to council. “I’m interested in the protection and promotion of the coastal areas as well as the health services and community programs available for local people.”

Governor to attend Christmas parade

While Father Christmas will still be the main attraction, there will be another special visitor to Two Wells’ Christmas parade this year. South Australia’s Governor, Rear Admiral Kevin Scarce and his wife, Liz, have accepted an invitation from the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) to attend the evening and judge various competitions. TWRAT president, Steve Kennedy, said it was exciting and hoped it would generate greater interest from the public. “It’s great news and will hopefully attract more entries in competitions and more people to attend and enter floats.” Businesses will be given the opportunity to sponsor the annual event. The street parade committee have been working

towards ensuring a successful parade. The Redbacks Band will again be playing in the parade. TWRAT and parade committee member, Bev Smith-Trim sent the invitation to Mr and Mrs Scarce. “I was so happy to receive his letter of acceptance,” Bev said. Mr Scarce spent his early childhood in Woomera. He was educated at Elizabeth East Primary School and then at Elizabeth High School. The parade and street party will be held on Friday, December 10 in the main street of Two Wells. Competitions for the Christmas Street Parade: Photos- size 15 x 10cm (open section) Themes 1. Signs help promote wetlands, reserves Lewiston wetlands will now be more apparent following the erection of 12 signs to define the Lewiston wetland and reserve trail. The signage includes mapping and information at each major location, linking remote vegetation reserves throughout Lewiston. The project was funded jointly by District Council of Mallala and council’s greening committee. Greening committee member, Pat Wake, said the signs would promote assets of the area. “It’s just about giving more signage to the areas and identifying the reserves within the area,” Pat said. Gawler Centre Players will be performing two comedy acts at Cafe Nova this December. ‘Last Tango in Gawler’and ‘The Unvarnished Truth’ will be held on Friday, December 10 and Saturday, December 11, with doors open at 6pm. Keep Friday, October 29 free as this is the date for the next Blue Light Disco in Two Wells Community Centre from 7pm to 9.30pm. It is for for 8-17 year olds and is a gothic, ghosts and ghouls night so everyone needs to dress up for the occasion. The Neighbourhood Watch meeting scheduled for the October 4 at Two Wells was deferred due to a joint meeting with Mallala Neighbourhood Watch on Tuesday October 5. This meeting was held at the Mallala Museum Old School House and the guest speaker was Andrew Murphy from SAPOL.

Ponds respond to rain If you get the opportunity to visit the Lewiston wetlands and Aunger ponds you will be amazed at the seasonal response the rains have brought to these unique environments. The diversity of native plants and animals within these reserves demonstrates the importance of ephemeral (wet in winter, dry in summer) landscapes within the Adelaide Plains. One of the key responsibilities landholders within the Adelaide plains should exercise is good land management practices. To help landholders manage their properties, the Natural Resource Management Board is offering a free workshop with a focus on prickly and noxious weeds. Big day at Middle Beach boat ramp By Bronte Hewett Lobbyists, councillors and members of the community were among about 130 people who flocked to Middle Beach on Sunday, September 19 to witness the official opening of the new boat ramp. For some, it was a fulfilling end to a 15 year battle. A cool breeze didn’t discourage revellers, who crowded the tent to listen to speeches and celebrate the momentous occasion. District Council of Mallala’s CEO, Charles Mansueto welcomed guests, followed by an address by president of the Foreshore Advisory Committee, Barb Reid, who outlined the ups and downs of the boat ramp campaign. “More than 15 years ago, John and Chris Drexel surveyed this area for a new boat ramp,” Mrs Reid said in her speech. “John has been involved for 15 years, but about five years ago, the Mallala Foreshore Advisory Committee decided to try to further this dream.” A steering committee of John Drexel, Steve Kennedy, Malcolm Frost, Sam Williams and Barbara Reid was formed. “We worked tirelessly with Jeannine Gan and Jeff McEachen to get quotes for the necessary work,” Mrs Reid continued. The group obtained $375,000 grant funding from various organisations. In 2008-9, the topical boat ramp was subject to much deliberation and caused friction amongst DCM councillors. Cooking up some cash

The Rotary Club of Two Wells held a successful barbecue during Two Wells Primary School sports day on Friday, September 17. The volunteers cleared about $300 and this will be donated back to the school for their projects and awards. “The BBQ was highly successful and we were rushed off our feet as soon as the aroma emanated at 11am and again at 1.00pm,” Rotary president, Robin Trevilyan, said. “We didn’t expect the first rush so we ordered another 5kg of sausages for lunch at 1pm, totalling 27kgs,” he said. Mr Trevilyan said they just had enough to go around, making the day successful and rewarding in all aspects. “We were pleased to find the children orderly and well mannered,” he said.

Malcolm’s Rotary honour

Malcolm Wilson was recognised by the Rotary Club of Two Wells for his continued service with a Paul Harris Fellow Recognition at the recent Group Four Intercity meeting at Two Wells Bowling Club. This is the highest recognition that can be bestowed upon a member in Rotary. It came as a complete surprise to him. Malcolm was a charter member of the club when it began in 1988 and he has held all positions of office in that time, attended district conferences, hosted exchange students from overseas, been with a hands-on team to Solomon Islands and helped organised and build the Two Wells Rotary Walkway. A total of 73 people attended from the Rotary clubs of Elizabeth, Mawson Lakes, Munno Para, Playford, Salisbury and Two Wells. The meeting included a sumptuous meal provided by the ladies of both bowls and Rotary. Background music was supplied by a two piece assemble of Sihali Schmaal on the harp and Katherine Trevilyan on flute. Both are locals and former students of Trinity College Gawler and are now studying at the University of Adelaide. The speaker was Danielle Kawolski,

of Families SA, co-ordinator for post disaster events linking community organisations, such as Rotary with traumatised citizens to provide information, shelter, first aid, care and comfort. In other news, the Rotary Club of Two Wells has drawn up a proposal to include “Friends of Rotary”. Some people are prevented from becoming Rotarians due to time and financial restraints. “Friends” would be able to attend meetings whenever possible and join in with community activities and outings. New gym and library open at Two Wells Primary Construction of a new library and gymnasium at the Two Wells Primary School is now complete. The two projects equate to $2.5 million and were funded by the Federal government under the Primary Schools for the 21st Cen-

tury element of the Building the Education Revolution. The new gym was declared officially open on Friday, September 17 at a ceremony during the school’s sports day. Students presented the school with a canvas which obtained thumb prints of

every student to commemorate the opening. It will be on display in the school’s foyer. The gym contains indoor sporting facilities and space for school assemblies.

Lewiston housing

MARCH 1985 The very first house arrived in Lewiston’s new sub division on Thursday, March 14. Mrs Jan Pain, who teaches at Two Wells Primary School, had her home moved from Dublin to her new block at Lewiston. She and her daughter Amanda have moved in although it is difficult living without power. All services except power have been connected to these blocks, but due to a shortage of poles the electricity has not arrived. Welcome Jan and Amanda, we hope you enjoy living here with us and look forward to your involvement in this community.

‘No caravan park’

JULY 1988 More than 30 residents of Two Wells gave a solid ‘no’ vote to the Mallala council’s proposal to establish a caravan park at the old dump site behind the Two Wells oval at a meeting on Wednesday night. The meeting had been arranged by the Two Wells Community Advancement Association, and Mr Jim Dimasi was invited to take the chair. Although five councillors were present, it was pointed out that none could put the council point of view since it had been decided the only people who should speak for council were the chairman and the district clerk, neither of whom were present. Two Wells refuse dump was established about eight years ago and closed earlier this year. Two Wells Community Advancement Association had been advocating its closure and returning of the land to recreational use. All those who spoke were opposed to establishing a caravan park there and eventually a motion was passed calling for the land to be retained for all time for recreational purposes. However, it was stated the association was not opposed to a caravan park being established in or near the town.

Young leaders

MARCH 1989 Francis Pellizzari and Frank Dimasi are two young men from Two Wells who attend Blackfriars College. This year they were both chosen to attend the Leadership Camp during the first week of school with 40 other students. Fifteen students were voted to be prefects at the conclusion of the camp and Francis and Frank were among them. “I was a bit surprised. It was a large group to choose from,” Frank said.

Brothers opposed

APRIL 1990 With local football only 10 days away, the Lamont brothers, Geoffrey (Wally) and Michael are preparing to outcoach one another in the head-on clash between United and Two Wells at Long Plains on April 21. The brothers are setting what is perhaps a new record for the Adelaide Plains Football League. Both brothers have played for Two Wells and United in the past. Michael and Geoffrey, together with younger brother Peter, must have set a family record by all playing for Two Wells in a successful grand final a few years ago. Two Wells Echo, October, 2010

Warning on blue crabs With the warmer weather approaching, PIRSA Fisheries has issued a timely reminder to recreational fishers of the strict regulations applied to blue swimmer crabs. Regional Manager Central South, Randel Donovan said strict size, bag and boat limits applied to blue swimmer crabs which are in place to ensure the long-term sustainability of the fishery is protected. “Fisheries officers will be patrolling all Gulf waters to keep an eye out for those people doing the wrong thing,” he said. “We want to ensure all fishers are aware of the regulations which apply to blue swimmer crabs so they do not put themselves in a position where they could face possible fines and loss of equipment.” Blue crab regulations: •Daily bag limit of 40 per person (combined limit with sand crabs). •Daily boat limit of

120 (combined limits with sand crabs). •A minimum size limit of 11cm width measured across the carapace from the base of the largest springs also applies. •It is illegal to take

female crabs with eggs. These must be returned to the water straight away without harm. •Recreational crab fishers are not permitted to sell or trade their catch. PIRSA fisheries has

Your local Echo ... ‘alpacered’ with news

With a herd of alpacas to keep her occupied, Bev Smith-Trim still makes time to put back in to the Two Wells community. Since moving to the town in 2004, Bev has contributed to the wider community through the Two Wells Regional Action Team and also by volunteering at the community craft shop. Recently Bev retired from the role of secretary for TWRAT, but continues to be involved and enjoys new challenges. She’s also been an active member of the Two Wells street parade committee for a number of years. “Involvement in the community is a great medium for meeting people in the town,” Bev said. Having previously lived in Adelaide and Wallaroo, Bev said Two Wells was a very friendly and hospitable town. Pet alpacas now provide

Bev with a lot of joy. The first additions to her and husband, John’s family were Wally (short for Wallaroo), Ross (short for Rostrevor) and Ben (short for Bendigo) at the start of 2005. Five years on, and the trio are joined by Dutchess, Tessa, Arabella, Daniela, Salome, Lorelei, Dana-Suzanne, Statesman and Postcard Prince. And if that’s not enough, two more are due in the next few months. The best thing about Two Wells for Bev and John is the friendliness. “It doesn’t have that smalltown parochial feel,” John said. “It also has good access to the city.” Along with alpacas, another of the pair’s passions is music. And travelling to Adelaide to watch Bev’s flugelhorn and trumpet champion son Mark in concert is high on the priority list.

Council service centre opens December 6 Members of the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) and other volunteers have almost completed moving out of the Two Wells Visitor Information Centre (TWVIC) which they worked hard to administer for seven years. The visitor centre has continued operation successfully due to its volunteer base, but will shortly enter a new phase of existence. TWVIC will be open as a 9am–5pm District Council of Mallala service centre five days a week from December 6. About 109 volunteer staff have worked at the centre since it opened in 2003 until 2010. Previously known as CABRI, the centre has grown from an empty, dilapidated building to a functioning and helpful hub of the town through the hard voluntary work of many townspeople. The long list of achievements has been made possible by more than $500,000 worth of successful grant funding and many hours spent on applications. Residents have always expressed the need for a council service centre in Two Wells, where the majority of ratepayers live. Now the opportunity has arisen and council has made the most of it. TWVIC manager Davina Smythe said extended trading hours would be a great advantage. “There will be enormous benefits to the community and visitors with council providing visitor informa-

tion services five days a week” Mrs Smythe said. Up to eight council staff could be housed at the premises, which is owned by council, and has been leased to TWRAT for about eight years. It is proposed renovations will include painted exterior heritage red, glass front door, new reception desk and chairs, waiting area, new community notice board and relandscaped front garden. TWVIC provided many community services over the years, including its own establishment as the only Visitor Information Centre within the District Council of Mallala. Other services included an ATO tax help centre, an IT training room and internet training courses, mature aged skill training courses and a website for Two Wells. The centre provided the community with general public internet centre, facilities for photocopying, faxing, binding and laminating, acted as an agent for DCM for dog rego and council rate payments. Staff also produced, copied and distributed the Echo for the residents of Two Wells and Lewiston. Services provided by TWVIC, other than council services, will remain within the township and will be available at a variety of locations, with the added benefit of additional hours. Photocopying services will be available at the Two Wells Craft Shop six days a week. Computer classes will transfer to a new location in November with volunteer trainer Anita Taylor.

The night was very well attended with about 250 people. A delicious meal was provided by Tiff Gameau and her army of volunteers. REhEaRsals for Two Wells Melodrama Group’s “The Bold and the Beastly” are drawing to a close, with the usual lastminute rush to finish costumes, props and learning lines before opening night on Friday, May 14. The show is loosely based on a true myth from the Dark ages, or even earlier. set in ancient Ireland, it features some shipwrecked scots, two bulls, a feisty princess, some brave Irish folk, a goddess and a leprechaun. a bloody battle between warring armies is matched by a battle of the bulls, and a of wills between the king and queen. battle The stakes – but not the steaks – are high. Training day polishes skills Brigade set for fire season Two Wells CFS volunteers participated in the Region Two regional field day on Sunday, September 12 at Mt Pleasant. This is a biannual training event to ensure firefighters and incident managers have honed their basic skills in preparation for the coming fire danger season. It provides a safe and realistic learning environment where multiple skills are tested and used at anyone time. The regional field day is one of the largest gatherings of CFS members and fire appliances outside of large fires or incidents. The field day is held in a different location every two years by local brigades who organise the day from catering, exercise and set up to management on the day. This year it was conducted in and around the Mt Pleasant area with 300 CFS volunteers from just over 35 brigades attending. Brigades from around the region often work together at large fires and will travel long distances to help each other’s communities. The day is an opportunity for members to catch up with their mates from all over the region “without the fire”. Crews arrived at 8am on Sunday and finished about 4pm. Several VIPs were invited for to lunch with crews and take a tour, including the governor of South Australia, Rear Admiral, Kevin Scarce. Younger firefighters were particularly excited to meet the governor and had opportunity to discuss their achievements in CFS and their communities. Drills included, map reading, road crash rescue, bushfire fire cause, team work and team communication, search and rescue, LPG cylinder fire, management of an incident, rural fire firefighting skill and driving. CFS members had a very productive day, good food and a great time and all crews performed very well.

Calls for help increase TWO WELLS CFS has the dubious honour of receiving more call-outs for the 2009/2010 year in comparison to last year. In fact, we received more call-outs than ever before, a total of 174 – it would be great to see that number drop significantly for 2010/2011. As a community, it is necessary each and every one of us continues to be proactive in keeping our homes safe, and maintaining a status of high alert when on the roads. While our name, Country Fire Service, indicates we are here to respond to fire hazards, responding to fire calls constitutes only a portion of what we actually do in the service. We are asked to attend road crash incidents, chemical spills, grass, garbage and bushfires, as

Two Wells CFS is manned totally by volunteers who give their time freely to assist others in need. Having said that, it can be difficult to always have someone on hand to respond to calls, so as they say, many hands make light work. Training is held weekly on Monday evening, from 7.30 to 9.30, and we always welcome new faces. Don’t forget the junior members of our community can also be involved through our cadet program. As you can see, the variety of call-outs requires our members to be well-trained in a variety of aspects to ensure we can best assist whatever incident we are asked to attend. A number of our members have recently completed, or are due to complete, courses in suppressing wildfires, the use of CABA(compressed air breathing apparatus – used when attending structure fires), and Senior First Aid. By keeping our members trained and up to date, we know we are able to offer the best service to the community when we’re asked to attend an incident. I would like to remind you we are always looking for new members.

Council Service Centre to Open in Two Wells The District Council of Mallala has been working, in collaboration with the Two Wells Regional Action Team, to enhance accessibility to Council services. The State’s 30 year Greater Adelaide Plan and associated growth in the Two Wells area have influenced the decision of Council to relocate some of its resources to the current Two Wells Visitor Information Centre (TWVIC). Council has been working closely with members of the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) to ensure the changeover from Visitor Information Centre to a Council Office runs smoothly and meets the needs of the community. The TWVIC will close its doors under its current capacity on Friday, 8 October 2010. Council CEO, Charles Mansueto, commented: ”Staff and volunteers involved in the Centre over the past 8 years should be proud of their achievements, the TWRAT has provided a valuable resource and significant services to the Two Wells District. The dedication and commitment of its members and volunteers has provided Council with a great base to move forward. We anticipate the introduction of further Council resources to the area will give greater access to a range of Council services to the wider community. Regional Councils are constantly faced with locating core services and resources where they can maximize community benefit. We believe the re-location of some of our resources to Two Wells will go a long way to achieving this.” Council staff are scheduled to re-open the site at 9am on Monday, 6 December 2010, as the Council’s Two Wells Service Centre.

The aim of the Awards, sponsored by the Australia Day Council, is to recognise outstanding contributions to the community over the past year or years. Brett, Barry shoot in WA

Barry, Brett and Pam Duncan recently travelled to Geraldton, Western Australia for Brett and Barry to compete in the Clay Target Crayfishing Carnival from September 18–20. Brett and Barry both performed well in the shoot which had more than 200 competitors from all over Australia. Brett finished with one first place and two third placings, winning the A Grade High Gun - and getting a Sash for his winnings. Barry came second in Event one in B Grade and was consequently regraded to A Grade. Leaving Tuesday morning (early) September 14 and arriving in Perth, the trio then picked up a five berth Campervan. “We then visited the Fremantle Maritime

Museum with Brett and Barry doing the guided tour of the Submarine, Oberon Class Submarine HMAS Ovens,” Pam said. “We then headed up to Guilderton and stayed the night then moved on to Geraldton for the Clay Target Crayfishing Carnival.” On Thursday, the boys set up camp, next to Loretta Aikins and Ron Smith who have been caravanning for a couple of months, mainly staying at Leonara - but coming over to Geraldton for the Shoot. This Crayfish Carnival is one of the richest in Australia. On Monday, they set off for Perth and caught the plane home on Monday night. “It was a very quick trip but very rewarding for all of us,” Pam said.

Motoring to national champs After competing across the state, Two Wells teenager Aaron Hart was recently named South Australian motor cross champion for his class. The 14-year-old placed first in the 2010 SA MX Championship Title in the 85cc/150cc Big Wheel Class on his motorbike. Aaron also finished in fifth place overall in the 250cc 4 stroke class and recently represented South Australia at the Nationals in Lake Macquarie, NSW . He competed in the 2010 Honda Australian Junior MX Championship from Sunday, September 26 to Friday, October 1. With hopes to one day turn motor cross riding from a hobby into a job, Aaron was first introduced to the sport when he was three. “Dad used to race, so he got me into it,” Aaron said. His dad, Michael Hart, was also a successful rider at a state and national level. “I’d eventually like to ride in America and turn it into job,” Aaron said, adding he enjoyed the thrill of the sport. “It’s fun, I like winning and the adrenalin and I meet lots of good friends,” Aaron said. But it also provides plenty of opportunity for the youngster to travel. Having competed in Queensland at the start of the year, he’s also been to nearly every corner of South Australia. The first round of the state championships was held at Mount Gambia, the second at Wingfield, the third at Port Pirie, the fourth at Port Augusta and the final race was at Murray Bridge.

Junior Saturday morning team tennis will begin on October 23, for 8 - 16 year olds. Professional coaching will be available from Monday evenings starting October 11. Register interest ASAP to Carolyn Weir on 8520 2421. Members of the Two Wells community have rallied behind the troubled tennis club, with a committee formed and plan of action established. About 15 people attended the crisis meeting on Tuesday, September 14, with five apologies also noted. The general consensus of the group was to form a committee and an AGM was then conducted with a full committee elected. Newly elected president Lynette Seccafien said it was a step forward

for the club. “It was a successful meeting with a positive group of people rallying together to ensure tennis continues in the district,” Mrs Seccafien said. ‘Crisis donation tins’ have been set up in local businesses around the town until the end of October to help pay off the debt to District Council of Mallala for court resurfacing. “Loose change can be donated to the club to kick start the season off for the junior team.” Committee members are already planning social tennis on weeknights to help the club financially. Two Wells Tennis Club has already nominated four junior teams in the Lower North Junior Tennis Association, consisting of one Division 1 team of four, one Division two and two Division three teams of four.

Three flags for the Roosters

The Roosters won three premiership flags at the recent netball and football grand finals on September 18 in Balaklava. Dave Gameau’s junior colts won against Hummocks Watchman Eagles very comfortably, defending their 2009 premiership. Jack Henneker received the best-on-ground medal. The B-grade netball team, led by Cassie Kent, won their grand final against Long Plains, who they

had not beaten all year until the big day. They also won comfortably with Sharnie Kent receiving the best-on-court medal. The A5 netball team were the only other team to win a flag, defeating Balaklava by five points. Coached by Robyn Champion, the A5 girls had a good season losing only a few games. Horsing around

The weather has started to warm up just in time for our ‘Open Day’ on Sunday, September 26, signalling the start of the summer bowls season. Many turned up including MLC John Dawkins who popped in to wish the club a good season. After the formalities, teams were formed and two games of eight ends were played. Afternoon tea was served with plenty of cakes, finger food and sandwiches being consumed along with tea or some amber liquid. Since the last report we have welcomed some new and old members into the club. From the Elizabeth Bowling Club we welcome Paul Candlish, father and son Mark and Brenton Bains, Ivan Ayris from Clearview plus we welcome back Barry Perrett after missing one season and Mark Thomson after missing two seasons. We also gained one new lady member who is well known by everyone in Two Wells and Lewiston –Yolanda Cannizzaro. We are in desperate need of some more ladies, as a few of our members are unable to continue playing because of age and illness. There must be out in the Two Wells and Lewiston areas some ladies who could take bowls and have an enjoyable morning and meeting others within our townships. All we request is for a few more residents to give it try just like Yolanda, who has never played. “Learn to Bowl” evenings will be starting up again on Tuesday evenings at 7pm on October, 12. These evenings give you great opportunity to have a go, because all you need to start with is a pair of flat sole footwear. We are now in receipt of two computers for seniors to learn about broadband. Times for when these computers will be available for general public use will be announced in next months report. We have the bowls to play with and you do not need bowling whites to participate. To finish this report we are holding a dinner on Melbourne Cup day and tickets are $17 each. Tickets can be obtained from Bev Thomas or booked by phone 8520 2678.

Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club held a Dressage Day on Sunday, August 1 at the grounds on Aunger road. Results from the day were published in the September Echo. It was another succesful day for the pony club. Upcoming events: October 21– Level one clinic at Northern Equestrian Centre October 31– Car Boot Sale at Aunger road grounds.
