Yolly Netball, its people and an FJ ute! Bronte Hewett reports:

After an upbringing at a market garden in Virginia, Yolanda Cannizzaro has made a life in Lewiston dedicated to family, netball and her FJ Holden Ute. The eldest of eight, Yolanda’s parents were hard working market gardeners, who immigrated from Italy when they were 17 to marry. Her mother was a professional dress maker in Italy, but the family worked up to 40 glasshouses at Virginia after arriving in Australia. “It was hard work in those days,” Yolanda recalls. I used to walk five miles every day to Virginia Primary School.” n Continued page 3

Search for Two Wells identity

I am doing reserach on people with surnames Elmer and Thompson from the 1940s. I see in the old newspapers F.Elmer is mentioned in horse racing and would like to confirm it is Francis Laurel Elmer. Is it Francis Elmer senior or Junior? Francis Laurel Elmer in his WW1 service records mentions his address as being c/o A. H.Thompson, Two Wells, SA. This is in 1944. He used the alias of Hatley Elmer when he enlisted. I believe F.Elmer and A.H.Thompson were involved in harness racing. I want to confirm the F. Elmer is indeed Francis Laurel Elmer. I have a photo from the Two Wells cemetery with a headstone of Francis Laurel Elmer on it from his daughter Jean. Kathryn Lucas kjlreserach@hotmail.com

Did Di lose it?

She did – and raised lots of cash Butler’s View activity room at Mallala Community Hospital was full of extreme frivolity on Tuesday, March 22 as Two Wells resident and hospital volunteer Di Allpike had her head shaved as the onset of her fundraising drive. At the time of printing Di had raised more than $1,000 – and was well on the way to her goal. Di’s plan is to achieve some publicity for the hospital where her mother, the late Mavis Jarmyn spent the last year of her life. Di said her drive was to increase awareness of the service Mallala Hospital provided. “The hospital is such a wonderful place for our elders to reside for the final term of their life,” she said. “The atmosphere is fantastic and the staff are a bunch of really caring people.” The hospital welcomed a new site manager, Kathleen Smith, replacing Maxine Varcoe, who has retired. Kathleen has a wealth of plans for the hospital and her motto is to “continue forward”. Her goal is to continue in the quest to produce a facility of high quality and has made quite a start to that end. The kitchen is in the process of

being upgraded, including stainless steel splashbacks, a repaint and new flooring. There are a few dedicated volunteers who work under the direction of lifestyle coordinator Nadia Stankovics, who joined the staff late in 2010 and has already endeared herself to residents with her sympathetic approach to their needs. It’s also terrific to see the return of Merrilyn Goode(care manager) to lead the carer staff in her inimitable fashion. As is usual when Di attends the facility, there was a great deal of fun to be had. Di said her attitude was all about the residents. “We should take care of them as they took care of us,” she said. Kathleen took control for the first sweep with the major shave done by hospital (and local) hairdresser Tina Atkinson. Di said she was extremely gratified by the response to her campaign and has had so much fun. There is a plan to make the Dare to be bare for Mallala Hospital an annual event. Businesses from both Two Wells and Mallala have been extremely supportive to the cause and have

aring for the land has been a passion for Pat Wake as long as she can remember. “I grew up in Whyalla, so I didn’t have much else to do other than play in the bush,” she said. “I’ve just always had an interest in plants and animals.” It comes as no surprise Pat is a founding member and current chairperson of Two Wells and Lewiston’s Landcare group, which formed 13 years ago. Having been in the district for 16 years, Pat has spent much of her time volunteering for various projects to help the environment and care for those plants and animals which inhabit it. Landcare has been responsible for the ongoing weed removal in Lewiston reserves, establishing the food trail in Two Wells and establishing Lewiston Wetland in 2001. Pat is responsible for co-ordinating all sorts of tree planting exercises across the district. She runs organised tree planting days with local community and Two Wells Primary school, which has established the Lewiston wetlands. “In the first year of the wetlands, we had 1000 kids planting trees from Two Wells, Trinity and Gawler schools,” Pat said. “We planted 4,500 trees!” Pat has been lucky enough to be able to turn her passion into a career, and works as a lecturer in Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management at TAFE SA’s Roseworthy campus. A dedicated academic, Pat holds degrees in teaching and environmental science, plus diplomas in sustainability, horticulture and land management. “I love working at TAFE, because I can do the work I studied for,” Pat said. “And it’s very rewarding.”

W ho cares? PAT WAKE DOES – AS A LEADER IN THE GREENING OF OUR REGION

But Pat still finds volunteering very satisfying. At present, she is Chair of District Council of Mallala’s Greening Committee, which aims to undertake, on behalf of council, initiatives to preserve, enhance and protect the biodiversity and remnant vegetation in the Mallala district and to provide advice to council. A member of Northern Ag Coast and Plains Natural Resource Man-

agement Board advisory committee, Pat also is committed to ensuring the district is well represented across South Australia. Pat is also involved with Friends of Gulf St Vincent, SA Herbology group and is also active in conducting surveys. Every November, Pat spends a week in the Mallee bush, where temperatures range between 20 and 50 degrees.

“We survey reptiles and small marsupials,” Pat said. As team leader, Pat leads the group during the camp out and she said sometimes the conditions were tough. “The area we survey was wiped out by fire a few years ago.” Another survey is conducted at Reeves Plains, which Pat is also actively involved with for Taylorville Survey Team.

Outside her environmental endeavours, Pat is a dedicated follower of Two Wells Roosters, where her sons, Travis and Aron, play football. She took to the role of B-grade manager with enthusiasm last year, and has been an active supporter for many years. Her love of animals extends to her home in Lewiston, where she keeps four dogs, three sheep, six ducks, a couple of horses and some frogs.

Yolanda driven by netball and her FJ •From Page 1 Yolanda said her grandpa bought her a bike, enabling her to ride to school, and later to the train stop to catch the steam train to Nailsworth Girls Technical College. It was while working at the Virginia Deli, where she wrapped onions and potatoes for 20 cents an hour, that she met her husband, Joe Cannizzaro. The pair married in 1964 and had two daughters, Kath and Alba and a son, Joe. Yolanda and Joe now have eight grandchildren living nearby. While she couldn’t play netball much as a young girl, Yolanda has made up for that in her adult life. The dedicated sportswoman has been heavily involved in netball at a local, state and national level. Her involvement with netball began at Virginia in 1979 but shifted to Two Wells, where she was president for 15 years. She was secretary of Gawler and districts netball league for 10 years, before serving on Netball SA executive committee for five. A life member of Netball SA and Two Wells Netball Club, Yolanda was conveyer of the Country Championships every June long weekend for many years. This demanding role included organising everything, from assigning umpires to peeling potatoes in the canteen, to ensure up to 120 teams played in the statewide competition. One might describe Yolanda as a team manager to be reckoned with, having man-

YOLANDA in her cherished FJ ute. aged a variety of successful netball teams. She was manager of the South Australian U17 team, and celebrated six premierships with the side. Five years were also spent as team manager of SA country team, and Yolanda travelled to Fiji and Cook Islands to play in successful tournaments with the team. Locally, she managed Inter 1 Contax team and also won a premiership. In 2000, she managed a team in Port Pirie

Golden North regional Masters Games. She acknowledges all the people she has met through netball and said they had a huge impact on her life. “Those people who I worked with have made me who I am today,” she said. “Netball has been my big thing in life.” Today, she continues to be involved by scoring for reserves in State league whenever they call on her.

She also attributed her netball triumphs to consistent support. “Without the family support, you can’t achieve these things either.” Now retired, Yolanda is coming to terms with a life without work, having dedicated 23 years to Elders Limited, working as manager of the Mail Room. She said she thoroughly enjoyed her working life, and in 1992 received a Service Award from Elders for 15 years of service. “It’s taken me a good 12 months to settle in to retirement,” she said. She also said it was worth working towards her cherished 1952 FJ Holden ute. “It’s beautiful,” Yolanda said. The ute is Yolanda’s pride and joy, and she was recently filmed to appear in a film about the Bay to Birdwood event. “I was the only female to come forward with an FJ ute,” she said, adding the vehicle has featured in the Birdwood event on several occasions. “The grand kids always look forward to the Two Wells street party because they get to ride in the ute.” Yolanda also volunteers her time to the Lyell McEwin hospital as a patient transport driver. Her involvement in Two Wells Probus Club has increased since retirement, and now she serves as vice-president. Yolanda was presented with the Telecom Advance Australia award of merit in 1986. And in 1989, she was awarded the Town of Gawler Sesquicentennial community service for recognition of services to women’s netball. www.twowellsecho.com.au

Rehearsals are well underway for Two Wells 2011 melodrama ‘A storm in a sea cup’. The locally written comedy musical show opens on Saturday, May 14 for a season of six performances and early indications are that bookings will be heavy. The show is set on the Great Barrier Reef and combines a mix of mayhem and magic into a storyline filled with laughs. King Neptune and his people are striving to save the reef from ruthless exploitation by a villain who is taking valuable raw materials from beneath it. The orchestra has grown this year under the baton of Brian Wilson and could number nine instrumentalists. Another innovation will be a “bal-

let” sequence from Swan Lake choreographed by Theresa Moore (nee McInerney). The principal villain is played by Eleisha Arbon, owner of the “Coral Cosmetics” company. She is aided and abetted by Kay Boon who plays a sea witch with magic powers. Leading the good side (apart from the Neptune family) are a group of university scientists led by Hayden Arbon, Katie O’Doherty, Stacey Seal and Derek Hardiman. Others in support roles are Paul Schmelzkopf, David McInerney, Andrea Humphrys, Kerry Heym, Sarah Groom, Jessica Renaglia, Janene Lynn, Michael Hardiman, Eugene Chaplin and Pamela Duncan.

Consider the future, not past I think District Council of Mallala should change the name of Two Wells. How about One Tank? Mallala South? I’m joking. But I just wanted the councillors’ attention. Change? In Two Wells? Never! Two Wells is like a horse which keeps getting yanked at the reins. If councillors stopped playing parochial games, Two Wells has the poten-

tial to go galloping ahead. B u t it seems councillors would rather spend ratepayers money on investigating each other for ‘code of conduct’ breaches while they argue over where they sit in the

main street commercial development, I will move to Western Australia! What amazes me about Two Wells is that I know young people who live there, but I rarely see them out and about the town. They live there. But their life isn’t there. People have to go out of town to find work. They go to Elizabeth to go shopping. They go to Gawler for social sport. And there are no trendy markets in Two Wells either. Councillors have an opportunity to change all that. I’m sure that would add some vibrancy to the town. The main street design guidelines presented to council show a little market place with stalls, and I picture buskers making their way there too. (I would love to be that person riding their bike through the proposed pedestrian walk way.) Plus there would be a safer area for the fruit and vegetable market every Saturday morning. The opportunity to upgrade the town’s streetscape should be

embraced and harnessed to build a town based on what’s best for the community. Think of the future and what the town could be, not the past and what the town once was. Commercial development is needed in Two Wells, not only to cater for current residents but to attract, (and retain!), new residents. Despite this, I enjoyed living in Two Wells and becoming a part of the community. I’ve met some really nice people and found out what it takes to keep a community operating. From touring huge tomato glasshouses and veterinary hospitals to attending Blue Light discos and Two Wells Regional Action Team meetings, I’ve enjoyed and learned a lot from all my experience with the Two Wells and districts Echo. Most people have been supportive and I’d like to thank them for making it so enjoyable for me to bring the news to Two Wells. And remember to vote for the main street designs in council’s next newsletter.

State Emergency Service members visited Two Wells Primary School during March. SES workers spent time talking to all classes about the dangers of swimming or playing in creeks and dams; as well as staying safe in floods. They reminded students and adults to never drive, ride, walk or play in floodwaters. They talked to students about practical steps to take to keep themselves safe; as well as emergency numbers students could ring, in an emergency situation. Paddy the Platypus also visited as the SES Flood safe Mascot. After listening to the SES presentation, classes visited the SES truck to hear more information about the SES. Frosty response leads to road rethink

Chris McDermott who lives on Hancock drive dosn’t want the road opened.

n Letter to the Editor n

Councillors must talk to residents

Imagine our surprise reading the Plains Producer of Wednesday, March 23, to find on page 4 the article “Frost road issues”. Three residents from Hancock Drive, Lewiston attended the District Council of Mallala meeting to speak at the Open Forum on exactly the same subject as we spoke on last October, namely, LACK OF PUBLIC CONSULTATION. This subject seems to be null and void with three councillors in the Lewiston ward as these councillors appear to do what they want with no reference to residents. This is exactly the same situation as applied to the siting of the Lewiston playground. We pressed the lack of consultation hard then but this apparently fell on deaf ears as the same thing has happened with the Frost road issue. When are these councillors going to realise the Oath of Office

states they are to be messengers of residents, wishes to council meetings and (should) not decide amongst themselves what is to happen in Lewiston. Referring to the council minutes of Monday, February 28, the councillors concerned with the minute 12.6.2 Frost Road opening/closing are councillors Picard, Kennington and Summerton. Again, lack of consultation has angered residents . (Editor’s note: A rescind motion has allowed Frost road to remain open until July 31, with community consultation part of a new report). We agree with the mayor’s statement: councillors changing seats was a sign of goodwill amongst councillors but, unfortunately, it was only goodwill from nine councillors as two refused, namely councillors Picard and Kennington who had to sit together and remain in their usual seats.

Does this show they are very against change or is there a hidden reason? Councillor McColl is to be congratulated for her fresh idea and innovation regarding the changing of seats. We applaud Neill Sharer’s letter to the editor on the same page last issue and agree with every word written. His comment about councillor Picard’s re-election at the next election is admirable but we go one further and ask her to do the honourable thing and resign from council immediately before much more damage is inflicted on the District Council of Mallala. These comments are all obtained from the editorials and letters in the Plains Producer and Echo which are excellent for up-to-date information on the activities of our councillors. Betty and Dave Body, Lewiston

Leesa’s overseas posting an ANZAC boost for Diggers

Frost road will remain closed between Hancock drive and Cavallaro place at Lewiston until July 31, 2011, following a rescind motion at Mallala District Council’s March meeting. Council’s previous decision to reopen the road using $10,000 budgeted in the 2009-10 budget received a frosty response from several Lewiston residents. Residents of Hancock drive attended two council meetings to speak at open forum opposing the reopening of the road. Council staff will now undertake community consultation on the future use of this road segment with a report to be brought back to council for consideration in June 2011. The road has been blocked off by council for about 15 years but still appears open on some GPS devices and street directories, causing confusion for motorists and concerns for emergency services. At council’s February 28 meeting, councillors debated whether to reopen Frost road, with the outcome showing support for an immediate reopening. It was decided the road would be reopened with $10,000 allocated to the project in last year’s budget, but this decision is now revoked until public consultation is complete. Infrastructure services manager, John Tillack, said $10,000 would only be enough funds to remove rubble barriers but not improve the road’s safety. Some councillors did not want the road opened without sufficient upgrades for safety concerns, but others felt access to the road was paramount. Councillors supporting the reopening said it was important for the road to

be reopened for a number of reasons, including fire evacuation, emergency service access and because it was believed residents in Lewiston felt it should be open. Cr Anne Picard moved the matter be brought back. Cr Tom Summerton then moved the barrier be removed to the value of $10,000. Following the decision, several residents of Hancock drive, which is on the southern side of the closed section, expressed their disapproval of the reopening. Roslyn Parker’s home is on the corner of Frost road and Hancock drive. “I would prefer to have it closed,” she said. “There are a lot of kids on this street, and they ride their bikes and it’s fairly safe at the moment,” she said. Chris McDermott, who lives on Hancock drive, said he also did not want the road opened. “To open that road would mean there is nowhere left to go walking near here,” he said. “I would be quite happy if that road does not open.” Neralie Wearn just built a new home on Cavallaro place in the new Hayman Estate, which is on the northern side of the closed section. Mrs Wearn, who is expecting her first child, said she would rather the road stayed closed.“It’s nice not to have much traffic.” Vicki Fabrici said she thought it would be a good thing to open the road. “The kids catch the bus from Hayman road. They have to walk there, it would be good to be able to drive them to the bus stop.” Esther Schlaeppi, a resident on Hancock drive, said she would prefer for the road to remain closed.

Two Wells stars in movie

With Mark Webb

Fight those ferals

Footage of Two Wells is recognisable in the feature film ‘Swerve’ which has been released online as a trailer. But through the wonders of special effects, there appears to be a new “mountain range” which has popped up in the background of the town, as shown above. Several locals were involved with filming in Two Wells in January 2010. Director, Helen Leake, said Two Wells was an excellent choice of set. “We really liked the look of the town,” she said. “It really suited the story with wide streets and the way the streets ran,”she said. The film traces the steps

Scenes from the feature film Swerve. Many local residents came forward to act as extras.

Traffic training for local crews More than 80 volunteer fire fighters attended a traffic training night which was hosted by Two Wells Country Fire Service (CFS) on Monday, March 7. Fire fighters from Two Wells, Mallala, Woolsheds, Dublin, Port Wakefield, Roseworthy and Freeling attended the event and all are now qualified to marshal traffic. Senior Sergeant Harry McCallam, from the SA Police Traffic Training Unit, attended and addressed fire fighters. Senior Sergeant Brenton Costello, Officer in Charge of Gawler Operations, was also present and

it was fitting he presented Tim Jenkin, immediate past captain of the Mallala brigade, with a letter of appreciation from the Officer in Charge of the Barossa LSA, Chief Inspector Alex Zimmermann. The letter thanked Tim, on behalf of SAPOL, for his dedication and assistance over 34 years of service to the Country Fire Service. Mr Zimmermann described Tim’s dedication to the community as “exemplary”. The event was so well attended that other training nights are being planned incorporating all emergency services personnel in the district.

of Colin, who took a wrong turn at the wrong place at the wrong time. Driving crosscountry to a job interview, Colin plays it safe when he has car problems and takes a short cut to a one horse town. But as luck would have it, he comes across a fatal road accident. One of the drivers, Jina, is shaken, the other dead and beside him, a briefcase full of money. When Colin resists temptation and does the right thing, turning it into the local cop, his good deed causes a series of fateful events to unfold. Swerve will premiere at the Melbourne Film Festival in July, with its release in cinemas shortly after.

I was walking my dog through the Lewiston wetlands recently when I unexpectedly stumbled on a fox hiding under a rubbish heap. For a fox to be here it has to eat, and the only food it has access to is either the local native fauna, some to the point of extinction, feral rabbits or your pets, such as chickens, cats and lambs. If you have ever lost chickens to a fox it’s an unpleasant experience. Foxes have been introduced into Australia and don’t belong in this environment so if you have seen or had dealings with this critter make your neighbours aware so they can secure their animals. Feral rabbits are another pest within the district. If you have tried to grow trees or vegetables you know firsthand some of the problems these animals cause. If you have come across a rabbit warren or witnessed fox activities let the council know and if you can describe where you witnessed either fox activity or a rabbit warren, they can document the sightings. This will lead to a better outcome when faced with eradicating these pests from our district. We all live here so let’s work together to eradicate these pests from our region. These animals are a problem but the only way we can reduce/eradicate them is if we are aware of their habits and the habitats they occupy.

Tank now a Two Wells icon

For those who haven’t noticed, a Leopard tank has arrived at Two Wells war memorial and is receiving many visits each day. It was not without significant effort from members of Two Wells RSL and a big transport operation. One of 30 in Australia, the historic tank was granted to Two Wells RSL late last year. The tank was delivered on Friday, March 12, on the back of truck, with a crane lifting the 42 tonne artefact onto a prepared cement slab. RSL president, Tony Flaherty, said the tank was an asset for the RSL, local businesses and the community. “Every day there have been people at the tank to take photos and have a look,” Mr Flaherty said. But despite the prospect of a tourist attraction, Mr Flaherty said people shouldn’t lose sight of the tank’s origins. “It’s important they remember the futility of war and the people who died wearing a uniform– both men and women,” he said. “If everybody gets something out of it, it keeps the community spirit alive.” Mr Flaherty said most of the concrete and labour for the concrete slab, which has cost other councils up to $20,000, was donated. “It cost us $500,” he said. Milagro construction and Primax concrete SA donated their time and resources for the tank. And local business owners are also getting into the theme. Local takeaway shop owner Trish Hardiman said Two Wells Snack Bar would introduce a ‘tank burger’. The RSL plans to release t-shirts with the phrase ‘I got tanked in Two Wells’, as well as other designs with pictures of the tank, to sell in shops around the town. And those locals worried about graffiti can be assured members of RSL are doing all they can to minimise the chance of vandalism. It was sprayed with special anti-graffiti paint. “If they graffiti it, we can wash it off easily,” Mr Flaherty said. While the tank is now welded shut, lucky members of the public were able to view the inside in personalised tours by Army Sergeant Lindsay Martin. The four seater tank features a firing distance of 6km with ammunition weighing 40kg. A plaque with information about the German-built tank will also be added to the war memorial soon. RIGHT: Welcoming the Leopard are Nick Femia and Rick Martin, who donated the concrete base. BELOW: Taking a close look inside are Rebecca Freeman (left) and Krystal Duffy.

New road to the future for Lange Auto and Sprint

Locals can expect quality customer service at Sprint and Lange Auto with the two businesses set to provide all motoring needs to the district from the same front desk. Tony and Sue Lange officially finished their lease at Two Wells BP on March 31, and will focus on providing the best service possible at Lange Auto and Sprint Auto.

“While we’re very disappointed not to have the opportunity to re-lease the service station, we are treating it as an opportunity to put all our focus on the northern end of town.” “We’re really excited about the new Sprint business out the front, but want to ensure Lange Auto mechanical repairs doesn’t lose its visibility,” he said.

special feature v Lange auto

n TONY and Sue Lange with Sprint Auto operations manager Roger Carlaw, as they plan the layout for stock.

TONY and Sue Lange are local icons to the Two Wells and districts’ community. Life’s road has taken a few twists, turns and bumps for the likeable, hard-working husband and wife business team. But now, as they embark on a new venture, BRONTE HEWETT reveals how it all began:

T

wo Wells BP has been more than a standard service station for the past 20 years. It has been taken beyond services of petrol stations, and essentially kept Two Wells going during the desolate period of the early 90s. Proprietors Tony and Sue Lange prepare for a new business adventure following the BP’s lease expiry at the end of March. It’s an end of an era for the local couple, and an end of an era for the town. But Tony sees it as an opportunity. Not unlike the opportunity he saw in a run down BP in 1991, while on the brink of bankruptcy. Originally from Arthurton on Yorke Peninsula, Tony and his older brothers worked farmland at Corny Point for 12 years. But hardships of the 1980s became too much and they were financially forced to leave the land. “Although we were broke, we avoided bankruptcy,” Tony said. After marrying in 1987, Tony and Sue made the move to Two Wells in 1991 to seek a new lease on life, which they found at the BP. Tony says he puts it down to a bit of luck and a lot of hard work. “We were lucky enough to be in

The story behind the popular Two Wells couple who are always ... at your service

Team Lange the right place at the right time. And combined with a bit of hard work, it all worked out.” With the town suffering the loss of highway traffic, shops were empty and streets were bare. The BP helped by selling groceries, which were no longer available in the town. And the business boomed. Later it introduced other services such as a newsagency, trailer hire, tyre repairs and sales and clean heat gas cylinder exchange and decanting. Tony, Sue and their six-month old daughter Rachel lived at the back of the BP for four and a half years when they arrived, in which time their second daughter Kate was born. As

business became steady, they later purchased a home in Two Wells and had two sons, Matthew and Jack. After several years of business and strong community involvement,

Tony and Sue realised their lease would not last forever when BP owners, Dermody Petroleum, hinted towards taking back possession. “The writing was on the wall a few years ago,” Tony said. “They told us the lease might not be renewed.” With a succession plan to purchase

Midnight Motors (now Lange Auto) and lease it out, the future looked good. But business is sometimes unpredictable. “The tenant got cold feet, and Sue and I were thrown into the deep end trying to run two businesses simultaneously,” Tony explained. “And I believe both businesses have not been run to their full potential during that time,” he said. Tony said this was why it would now be a good opportunity to develop both motoring businesses on the same site. However, it has not made the separation with BP any easier. “It’s sad,” Tony said. “I’ll miss the interaction

with customers and co-workers.” “I’ve been so proud of my staff there over the years.” “The BP gave us a second chance after bottoming out on the land.” The community could also suffer the loss of a big sponsor. The BP has been a huge supporter of virtually all local sporting groups and other community groups at different times in the past 20 years. Two Wells Christmas street parades will also have a void, with the BP winning countless awards in the past for ‘best float’. But business continues in a big way for Tony and Sue, still very much part of Two Wells. Long may they prosper.

With Maria Aunger

Is it worth the risk? It is an offence for a person to misuse a motor vehicle. This includes: •Racing with other vehicles (including speed trials). •Doing wheel spins. •Causing engine/tyre noise that is likely to disturb others in the vicinity. •Driving on parks/gardens and causing damage to the surface. The maximum penalty for this offence is $1250 and police have the power to seize and impound vehicles. Compensation can be claimed if there is any damage to the park/garden or road surface. Other offences for which vehicles may be impounded include vehicles that are emitting excessive noise by amplified sound or other device; drink driving; driving in a speed/manner dangerous and causing death/injury by dangerous driving. The vehicle can be initially seized by police for 48 hours. If the convicted person has been convicted once in the last five years for a misuse of motor vehicle then the vehicle can be impounded for three months by the court. Two offences in five years – the vehicle can be seized for six months. Three offences in five years – the vehicle is subject to forfeiture (you lose it!). So, is it worth the risk? Just a reminder that Neighbourhood Watch meetings are now held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm in the RSL Clubrooms, in the main street of Two Wells. The next one will be held on Tuesday, April 12 with the following meeting on Tuesday, May 10. Everyone is welcome.

It’s official!

DISTRICT Council of Mallala officially opened its Two Wells service centre on Wednesday March 23. Now operating from the former Visitor’s Information centre in the Main street, the centre will open for various council requirements from planning to customer services. Celebrating trees Two Wells and districts could be part of an extraordinary community revegetation campaign for South Australia. To celebrate Trees For Life’s 30th anniversary, the environmental organisation has teamed up with ElectraNet, SA’s electricity transmission specialist, to undertake a unique project – Trees For Towns – which will create a lasting legacy of 30,000 native trees and shrubs planted across 30 local, rural and remote South Australian communities. Under the project, communities from the Far North to the South East, from the West Coast to the Fleurieu will be invited to register their interest in Trees For Towns, with the 30 most organised and enthusiastic selected to participate. Applications close on May 6, with the 30 successful towns announced in June. It is envisaged the communities will form working groups to grow 1000 native seedlings indigenous to their region and participating communities will be guided through the process of selecting, propagating, planting and caring for local provenance species. Communities interested in registering to be part of the Trees For Towns project can download an application form from the Trees For Life website www.treesforlife.org.au, or phone the office on (08) 8406 0500 for more information.

Growth brings service boost District Council of Mallala (DCM) has successfully enhanced accessibility to council services for people living in Two Wells and district. The recently renovated service centre in Two Wells was officially opened on Wednesday, March 23 at 10am. The centre has been operational since December 2010. Chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said there were some formalities and speeches, followed by cutting the ribbon celebrations. “We invited people from the community who had been involved in the Visitor Information Centre.” About 10 council staff are based at the centre, including district planner, Henri Mueller, the planning staff and customer service staff, including Donna Waite, Rose Day, Carol Wildbore and Krystal Duffy. Mr Mansueto said the office was receiving many visits from tourists and locals but he hoped the opening further promoted its services to the local community.

“Tourists have been finding it more beneficial having the centre open five days,” he said. The centre continues to offer souvenirs and information about the district’s attractions. The state’s 30 year Greater Adelaide Plan and associated growth in the Two Wells area influenced the decision of council to relocate some of its resources to the former Two Wells Visitor Information Centre (TWVIC). Council worked closely with members of Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) to ensure the changeover from a Visitor Information Centre to a council office was smooth and it would meet the needs of the community. Mr Mansueto said the local volunteers had built an excellent base for the service centre. “Staff and volunteers involved in the centre over the past eight years should be proud of their achievements.” He said TWRAT had provided a valuable resource and significant services to the Two Wells district.

“The dedication and commitment of its members and volunteers has provided council with a great base to move forward.” “We anticipate the introduction of further council resources to the area will give greater access to a range of council services to the wider community.” While other council functions will continue to operate from the main office at Mallala, Mr Mansueto outlined

Congratualtions to Mallala District Council on their centre

the importance to more forward with growth. “Regional councils are constantly faced with locating core services and resources where they can maximise community benefit,” he said. “We believe the relocation of some of our resources to Two Wells will go a long way to achieving this.” Office hours are 9am–5pm, Monday to Friday, providing planning and customer service functions.

The Two Wells Uniting Church/ Uniting Care Pancake Day was held in the courtyard of the Post Office on Old Port Wakefield road, Two Wells from 9am ’til about 1pm on Friday, March 11. It was a very social morning as volunteers met a lot of different people calling in from all over the state. Some were lucky enough to have a pancake because they had to wait for their animals at the local vet. The street was a hive of activity as the

army tank arrived the same morning. The trading table was very successful with over $300 raised and more than $240 from the pancake stall –with proceeds going to Uniting Care, Gawler Branch. Church members held another pancake day at the Two Wells Primary School on Tuesday March, 22. This was another successful event, with helpers, Jim and Gloria Pederick, Roy Packer, Robin Trevilyan, Rae

Churches gather for day of prayer MemberS of the Catholic, Uniting, Lutheran and Anglican Churches of Two Wells celebrated World Day of Prayer at St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Friday, March 4. The theme of the night was ‘How many loaves have you?’ prepared by World Day of Prayer committee of Chile. Co-ordinator Evelyn Dyer said the service was very prayerful and enjoyed by all. “It is lovely to be able to share these ecumenical events together,” Mrs Dyer said. “It is always interesting to hear how people manage in other countries and it does really make us realise how lucky we are in Australia,” she said. Guest speaker, Collen Sheedy-Palenthorpe, of Virginia, unfortunately could not attend due to family illness. But she prepared a speech and it was read on her behalf. The evening concluded with all guests sharing a supper together.

BELOW: Enjoying the morning are Una Belcher, Elsa Webb, Fay Lamont and Audrey Hart.

Wilson, Wendy Sharpe, Maxine and Stephen Cummins, Margaret Gameau and Pamela Duncan all working extremely hard for a few hours. The volunteers were selling pancakes and fruit boxes – with more than $760 received – but some expenses do have to come out. It was a great fund raising effort. Pamela thanks helpers on both days – most of whom did the two days giving a very satisfying feeling afterwards.

TWRAT and bowling club combine for big brekkie:

TWO Wells volunteers at the Emu breakfast Pamela Prescott, Bev Molloy, Margaret Gameau and Beverley Thomas.

Two Wells hosts Emu awards

TWO Wells Bowling club was the venue for this year’s Adelaide Plains Emu awards, hosted jointly by Two Wells Regional Action Team and the bowling club. The awards, held at a breakfast function on Friday, March 25, attracted a big crowd of about 80 people. Award entrants, their nominators and special guests from around the community were treated to a wonderful breakfast served by ladies from the Two Wells Bowling Club. Organisers said the event went really well and was a boost for the community groups involved. “We felt proud to be able to host such a big event for the Adelaide Plains,” TWRAT member, Evelyn Dyer said. The event culminated with about $780 raised to be split between the two community groups. The overall Emu award winner was Blyth shearer, Daryl Andriske, who raised about $46,000 for Cancer research during ‘Shear for Life” last October, when he sheared 469 sheep. Daryl also won the individual category. Nominations included Leith Reinke, CFS Hoyleton volunteer since 1968 and captain 25 years and Wendy Schulz, Wendy’s Cafe and Cakes, Balaklava. Daryl’s incredible achievement also won the Event category for the Blyth community. Two Wells community Christmas street party and parade was a nominee in the Event category, which

also included Portraits children’s art competition at Hummocks Station and First Balaklava Scout group’s centenary celebrations. Business category winner was Owen’s Noel Bubner, of Agri-Cycling Australia. Other nominations included Cutz ’n’Curlz hair and beauty, Nicole Gregory, Balaklava; Budget Botanics, Balaklava, Kevyna Gardner and Kath Catford; Balaklava Post Office, Ray and Judy Koch. There were dual winners in the Community group category – Dual winners: Balaklava Museum and Clementina Corner, Port Wakefield. Nominations included Mallala and District Lions Club and Avon Complex. The awards were supported by District Council of Mallala and Wakefield Regional Council, with the $600 winner’s prize provided by Churches of Christ Life Care. The Plains Producer and Two Wells Echo also were sponsors.

Blue light disco fun Neighbourhood Watch members and local police contributed their time to another successful Blue Light Disco at Two Wells Community Centre on Friday, February 25. This time, the theme was ‘Red’ and Maria Aunger from NHW, said there were some great red touches. “Our ‘Red’ theme produced some interesting accessories, like flashing red devil horns, which made it fun,” she said. She said the new DJ was also a hit. “We have a new DJ, Sam Carter, who played some great dance music, with his assistant Alex Skewes, and the kids seemed to enjoy it,” Maria said. The next Two Wells Blue Light will be on Friday, June 3, with a “B” theme. RIGHT: Blue Light St John volunteer, Joyce Mendrik, with a young Blue Light prizewinner, Courtney Hoile, from Two Wells.

Back-to-back Kapunda Cup wins for Naomi Lewiston resident Naomi Shelbourn (pictured) won the Kapunda Trotting Club Cup for the second year in a row with her other Trotting Horse ‘Party Smartie’. Naomi and her horse are doing well this season and they are leading contenders for the Country Clubs Trotters Trophy. The horse ran third in the Victor Harbor Club Cup and was back at Kapunda Club to contest a marathon event

of over 3000m. This event used to be held in the early days of racing and has been brought back as a special event. Naomi’s other trotter Sawfoot’ is back in work so her wins will surely only increase now and if things go well, she will have two runners in the June Monte Race. Good luck to all trainers. Track fees can be paid to Carole Bywaters or Malcom Farrow.

n RUNNING of the balls (right) and Gary Farr’s entry rolls towards the line. ABOVE: Two Wells tennis club team (from left), front row: Matthew Lange, Maddy Seccafien, Shannen Weir, Jamie Humphrys, Jack Tapscott, Chelsea Rose Hoppo, Monica Baker, Natisha Eastman, Cassie Lawson, Caitlin Musolino.Rear: Angus Tapscott, Airlie Tapscott (behind Angus), Macey Briscoe, Jessica Weir, Tarsha Briscoe.

‘Running of balls’an ace for tennis Five hundred tennis balls were released last Saturday to determine the winner of Two Wells Tennis Club’s ‘running of the balls’ fundraiser. The event marked a remarkable effort for the club, which has made significant progress since crisis talks in October last year. Gary Farr’s number 120 came in first after the balls were released from a Cavpower Cat tip truck. Gary pocketed $500, while in second spot, Greg Tapscott won $200 for number 500 and Di Meaney won $100 for number 328 in third place. Tennis club president, Lynette Seccafien, said the committee was making excellent progress in paying off a debt to District Council of Mallala. “A zesty committee met monthly to define ways to repay this debt,” Mrs Seccafien said. “The fantastic and dedicated group have now raised almost enough to not only repay the arrears, but a huge part of the overall debt!” “The club has made significant inroads since the ‘crisis meeting’ held back in October 2010, after they were advised the club had a debt of $7700 with a current outstanding

arrear amount of $2570 to council for court resurfacing,” she said. The ‘running of the balls’ event took place during the tennis club’s junior presentation at Two Wells oval complex. The Diane Meaney Award was presented to Caitlin Musolino. Organiser and committee member Marie Tapscott came up with the fantastic and original fundraiser. She said everyone enjoyed themselves. “It was a very successful event for the Two Wells Tennis Club and lots of fun too,” Marie said. Faced with the possible closure of the courts, the committee took the option to repay the debt and again raise the profile of tennis in Two Wells. Beginning with weekly Wednesday evening social tennis and evening Friday fortnightly family games, the committee began the arduous task of rebuilding junior numbers. Starting with the local primary school newsletter, sending out flyers and marching in the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade, junior numbers have been steadily increasing, with many new members commencing with coaching on Monday nights.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP Donations came from Two Wells IGA, Two Wells Empire Cafe, Boril Olds Solicitors, Hickinbotham Developments, Corston Coaches, Balaklava Transport, The Plains Producer, Bendigo Bank, Two Wells Melodrama, Adelaide Plains Recycling, CAVPower, Two Wells Tavern, G&M Tapscott Fencing, Di Meaney, George Pethick, Joan Post, plus anonymous donations. Marie’s sister, Chelsea made all the tickets and Cavpower donated 500 balls and a brand new CAT truck to launch the event. The committee of 11 then sold all 500 tickets. The committee, Marie Tapscott, Di Meaney, Paul Humphrys (treasurer) Lynette Seccafien (president) Christine Musolino (secretary), Trevor Seccafien,Alan Briscoe, Gary Farr, Carolyn Weir, Kate Lange and Stacey Gameau, set about a fundraising and payment plan. After much good media attention, the committee wrote to local businesses asking for

donations to assist them. Crisis tins placed around the town also contributed to the club’s funds. “By December 2010 we had enough to repay the arrears plus one payment ahead of schedule,” Mrs Seccafien said. “Spurred on by our efforts, our thoughts have turned to repayment of the debt so our future tennis players and their parents can just concentrate on playing tennis.” Donations are still accepted and can be sent to Two Wells Tennis Club, PO Box 267 Two Wells or contact
