eet our town’s first Christmas Street Parade Prince and Princess, Cale Russell and Tameka Simons. These two up and coming youngsters have been chosen by the Two Wells Regional Action Team as examples of young community members going above and beyond to better themselves, help others and give back to the district. TWRAT vice president Bev Smith-Trim said the idea for the prince and princess came from a desire to highlight those younger Two Wells residents who are involved in the community. “This is something a bit extra for the street parade,” Bev said. “And hopefully it inspires other young people to get out and do something in the community.” Bev, along with council members Jan Heley and Mark Wasley, presented the pair with robes, a crown and a medal on November 22 to commemorate their part in this year’s parade. Two Wells resident Lesley Hunkin made the glittering robes for the prince and princess. Bev said thirteen-year-olds Cale and Tameka would walk in the parade and then help Father Christmas meet and greet all the local children in “Teddy Bear Hall”. “I liked the idea of it,” she said. “I wanted it to be a young person who has some input in the community, someone who makes a contribution. “I like to think we can have different things at the parade each year.” This year’s street parade will see a few new stall holders attend as well as

displays from the CFS and Scouts. Cale was nominated by the Two Wells Scouts Group for his involvement in the group and the community, while Two Wells resident Norma Handley nominated Tameka for her commitment to sports, dedication to

helping others and effort and enthusiasm in all she does. Look out for these two young “royals” at the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade on Friday, December 16. n MORE parade details, Page 10

things to see, do and participate in, with children’s craft set out in gazebos on the oval and a variety of fun games also being held. Daryl Thompson and band will provide live background music, and there will be pony rides, face painting, and a giant sand pit to keep everyone busy. Daisy the donkey will be itching for a pat and a cuddle and The Jonny Wonny Show has been booked to entertain the children with dancing, music, ventriloquism and magic. While residents are encouraged to take a picnic tea from home, some food and drinks will be available, including fresh fruit, home made cakes and slices, hot doughnuts, cordial,

Rae said children are invited to come dressed as their favourite Christmas character, with the chance to participate in the original Christmas story re-enactment if they are dressed as angels, shepherds, wise

men, Mary or Joseph. Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, has donated prizes for a colouring competition and will present them to winners on the night. Following the Christmas story play everyone is encouraged to join in the carols at twilight,

with children from Two Wells Primary School and a local singing group also lending their voices. MAKE A DATE: It sounds like Fun 4 Kids is going to be even bigger and better this year, so don’t forget Sunday December 11 from 6pm at the town oval.

Ready or ‘knot’ – come and try scouting

Two Wells Scouts group will host its first come and try night at this year’s Christmas street parade on Friday, December 16. Located at the Scout hall the come and try activities will possibly include a dunk tank for the Scout leaders, chariot races using chariots made by the Scouts, knot tying, making a rope bridge, and creating candle pancakes. In conjunction with theses activities the Scout group intends to run a discovery trail

along the main street, where participants will be encouraged to make their way down the street collecting stamps (and freebies!) along the way. It is hoped this trail will work in much the same manner as the Yellow Brick Road at the Adelaide Show. Scouts SA will also be providing an activity trailer, which will include lots of other Scout-based activities and information. Scout group leader Ian Laughton said the

event was being planned to get families to consider Scouting and to fundraise to send members to the 2013 Scout Jamboree in Queensland. “The idea is to encourage people to come and see a little bit of what Scouts is about,” he said. So why not drop in and try some of the activities at the Christmas street parade on Friday December 16? It’s sure to be a lot of fun.

Design work starts on Baker ford The first steps toward a safer, more reliable ford crossing at Baker road have begun, with District Council of Mallala hiring a consultancy firm to being the design process. DCM chief executive officer Charles Mansueto (pictured) said the council, in conjunction with Playford Council, had started the process to get a design for a new crossing at the ford. “We’re asking the consultancy firm to

design a ford crossing that would minimise the number of times we would have to close it,” Mr Mansueto said. “They’ll come back with an idea of what the structure will look like and we’d also have an estimate of how much it will cost. “If we can resolve that issue we are helping locals and addressing an issue that’s been there for a long time.” Angelo Conti’s mixed farm backs

onto the Gawler River and has been in the family for around 50 years. Mr Conti uses the Baker road ford on a daily basis, sometimes even up to four or five times a day with school drop off and pick up as well as after school sports. Mr Conti said the upgrade was much needed and he understood although the process would take time, this was a step forward. “I think it’s heading in the right direc-

tion and it’s actually good news,” he said. “I’m happy with the approach of the council and their direction. “It’s going to benefit the community on both sides of the river, which is terrific.” It is hoped final designs for the ford crossing will be back to council by February or March next year, with both councils then seeking funding for the project, Mr Mansueto said.

Honeymoon with a difference for Jessica Two Wells Primary School reception teacher Jessica Wadey was married in October this year and, unlike most newlyweds, did not head for the typical white, sandy beaches and warm water of a honeymoon on a tropical island. Instead this young, energetic and compassionate teacher, is just returning from almost two weeks roughing it in rural Cambodia, where she volunteered to give aid to the needy and worked to help communities get back on their feet after recent flooding. As this month’s Echo goes to print, 27-year-old Jessica, along with her husband Andrew Rogers, and parents Mary and Grahame Wadey, will be touching down back in Australia after their stint as volunteers with the 2h Project. The 2h Project - standing for hope and help - was founded by Jessica’s good friend Kate Taylor, about 10 years ago, and according to its website, is a “not for profit Australian development organisation working with local communities overseas to bring help and build hope for the poor and disadvantaged”. The organisation does this through a variety of programs, including Farming for Futures, Sight for Life, Safe Arrivals and Beyond Business, with sustainable farming practices, safe births and restoring eyesight just some of the focus points of the programs. Before leaving for Cambodia, Jessica said her trip would centre mostly on the Sight for Life project, which aims to give eyesight to thousands of Cambodians through cataract surgery. “I’ll be testing people who are in need of cataract surgery and then following them right through until they have the surgery,” she said.

T PEOPLE Bec O’Brien “I’m very excited about what we’ll be doing but nervous as well. “We’ll be based in the community, we’ll be sleeping on dirt out in the middle of nowhere (and) we’ll be eating what everyone eats. “But I’m not going over there for fun, it’s what I can give to the people.” Jessica said funds raised by the 2h Project went directly to the communities most in need, with all volunteers donating their time and services. “Everyone who is involved is a volunteer,” she said. “But it’s not just about giving them money. “It’s also about training them up in farming practices to better their communities and their futures.” The students at school community at Two Wells Primary School have got behind Jessica’s trip, donating books, toys, stuffed animals, hair clips, stickers and pencils. “It’s been wonderful,” Jessica said of the support. Some of the kids have even come and brought things from their own homes and bedrooms.” With 20 kilograms of donations collected Jessica was lucky she travelled as part of a group, which allowed her a much larger luggage limit. Jessica said people didn’t need to be in

Now $2 million to upgrade depot More than $2 million is being spent upgrading District Council of Mallala’s Works depot to fix soil contamination concerns. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said years of inadequate storm water management practices had seen contamination of soil in the area and an overhaul was needed. “There are contamination issues but these are being monitored,” Mr Mansueto said. The depot on Aerodrome Road will be fully sealed with road base and designed to incorporate today’s standard storm water management practices, with dust issues also being addressed and access for heavy machinery taken into consideration.

Mr Mansueto said the depot would become much more accessible for members of the pubic, with a car park out the front and an administration building outside. “It’s being set up so there’s better access for the community,” he said. Mr Mansueto said in 2009 council had budgeted $1.9million for the project and recently endorsed further funds. A new workshop area, wash bay and storage sheds is also part of the upgrade. The depot area is currently being vacated in preparation for work to begin, with completion hoped for by May or June next year. Staff from the Mallala depot will be relocated to Two Wells for the duration of the upgrade.

Two Wells Primary School reception teacher Jessica Wadey has just returned from volunteering in rural Cambodia. a trained position to volunteer for 2H trips, as the group provided specific training and it was the intent that mattered. “The main thing is that if you want to help, but don’t know how, there are ways,”

she said. “It doesn’t matter how big or little something is, everything is of use over there. “All you have to have is a heart.” For more information about the 2h Project visit their website www.2hproject.com.

School ‘community garden’ takes shape Bec O’Brien reports:

T

wo Wells Primary School’s community garden is starting to take shape, with a number of recent working bees helping to establish an outdoor classroom, bush sensory walk and fire pit area. Tackling the project during the October school holidays as well as during this term, were volunteers from the local Rotary club, the school and supportive community members. Local businesses donated plants and mulch to the garden, and Jason Turner, from Roseworthy-based Sustainable Landscapes, also pitched it to help by donating his time and equipment to clear and level the fire pit area ready for paving. Project secretary and TWPS school services officer, Michele Renaglia, said it was exciting to see the community garden start to come together. “The staff and the teachers have been keep-

Michele said the concept behind the garden was to teach students the basics of caring for the environment, beginning with simple ideas such as planting plants and working towards cultivating vegetables, identifying native plants and cooking bush tucker. “We want them to be able to know how to plant a plant and how to look

after it,” Michele said. “This allows us to show them that (and) we’re also looking at being more sustainable, looking after the environment and bringing those plants that are indigenous to the Adelaide Plains area back in because there are not a lot around anymore.” Already some of the garden beds have been

‘Big ideas’ presented at national conference Two Wells Primary School was one of only a few schools selected from the state to present at the Smarter Schools National Partnerships Conference in Brisbane on November 10 and 11. TWPS principal, Cherie Collings, along with maths coach and Reception teacher, Hayley Phillips attended the conference, which was opened by Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and

Youth, Peter Garrett, and saw more than 400 people take part from schools around the country. Cherie said the schools’ selection was a result of their successful Big Ideas In Number (BIN) program, which has seen students’ numeracy confidence, and progress between NAPLAN tests, improve considerably. “We presented a workshop about our work on improving

After weeks of delays, the Two Wells Courthouse’s long-awaited and much needed interior facelift has finally been completed. And if you’re wondering when the Craft Shop will re-open, fingers crossed by the time this month’s Echo is printed, their doors will once again be open. Craft Shop co-manager Judi Frost said work started on the upgrade in early October, with the building only scheduled to be closed for four weeks. However, unforeseen problems in the ceiling of the courthouse’s back room meant work had to be delayed, Judi said. “They (the contractors) were trying to restore it to its original condition,” she said. “But they found the batons above the ceiling were rotten and the ceiling couldn’t be secured well enough and it was going to cost a lot more money. “So it’s stalled and we’re trying to work something out with that.” Judi said the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT), who manages the building, had been in touch with a Heritage SA architect to see what could be done with the ceiling in the back room. As for the rest of the building, Judi couldn’t be happier. “It looks a million dollars,” she said. “It’s just beautiful and it’s come up really nicely. The painting is excellent and makes it so light.” Ben Leverink, of B & S LevTwo Wells Echo, December, 2011

It is hoped the garden will be completed by the end of the year with picnic tables and seating yet to be added.

More than 80 people paid tribute to those who have died for our country, and remembered the men and women still serving, at a moving Remembrance Day service held at the Two Wells monument on Friday, November 11. Returned Services League (RSL) president, Tony Flaherty, led the service and said, considering it was a workday, it was a terrific turnout of locals, community people, RSL members and Scouts. Tony said the service was an opportunity for everyone to think of those who had given their lives for our freedom. “It was a very moving service, and I just spoke about how the young guys are over there in Afghanistan now,” he said. “I just wanted people to think about how some of them had given their lives so our country could be free, and to think about what it would be like to be in their shoes.” Wreaths were laid at the monument by District Council of Mallala deputy mayor, Mark Wasley, RSL vice president, John Atherton, and RSL manager, John Allen. Following the service everyone was invited back to the RSL for coffee, drinks and nibbles. The local RSL also led St Columbia College’s Remembrance Day service at the school the following week.

DCM’s off-road alternative

District Council of Mallala representatives attended the Local Government Association’s annual general meeting on October 29, where a motion was put to its members, by DCM, seeking support for a state-wide approach to managing the issue of offroad vehicles. DCM chief executive officer Charles Mansueto, along with mayor Marcus Strudwicke, attended the AGM. Mr Mansueto said while there was a lot of “in-kind” support for the motion, it was not passed at the meeting. He said the group wanted to add an additional clause in regard to looking for alternative off-road sites, and was of the opinion it was generally a police issue. “We’ll continue to pursue it with the LGA,” he said.

n COMBINED SHOW A SUCCESS:

Comedy laughs may come again Two Wells Melodrama Group’s inaugural Comedy Night looks set to become an annual event after playing to a near-sold out crowd on November 5. The “One Night Stand” show was a partnership with the Gawler Players group and consisted of three short plays. Traditionally the Melodrama Group has staged one show each year, but the comedy night was a chance to try something new and an opportunity to branch away from the sit-down, dinner-type performances of the past. Melodrama Group president, Lance Morgan, said the success of this first event could pave the way for an annual comedy night on the group’s yearly calendar. “It was a success and it was well received,” Lance said. “My dream is to set up one over two nights so we can have a couple of other invited groups come.” About 170 people turned out to watch the comedy-based plays, with funds raised from the night going to the local tennis and cricket clubs as well as the Gawler Hospital. Lance said staging the comedy night

was an opportunity for local actors to try something new. “Normally what we do is act over six or seven acts with meals in between,” he said. “This (comedy) format had a lot of dialogue over a short amount of time (and) it challenged a few of them to extend themselves. “There was certainly dialogue and interjection and getting into character a lot more and the enthusiasm of the actors was terrific.” Lance said the group was now excited to be taking a new concept and building it up into a great night for the community. “It’s a great way of getting the community together apart from a footy match, church service or funeral,” he said. “It was hard work but it was great fun, everyone pulled together in different roles, there’s no end to the scope of what we can do in the future.” n The dates have been set for next year’s traditional Melodrama Group performance, which will be held from May 11-27 with a proposed circus theme which will be sure to appeal to young and old alike.

Proposed new dog by-laws for the town of Two Wells have been put on hold as the District Council of Mallala investigates changes to its local government land use by-law. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said both by-laws had to go to community consultation, and as councillors had requested more clarification on the land use by-law, it was time

efficient and cost effective, to wait until both were ready to put to the public. “There still needs to be a bit of tweaking and we’ve been doing a lot of work on that,” Mr Mansueto said. “We’re looking at how land is used and how to make its use more practical for ratepayers.” It was hoped a decision could be made at council’s December meeting.

Two Wells Community Children’s Centre’s inaugural Girls Night In was a hit with staff, local mums and businesses. Held on Friday November 11, the night was a chance for women of all ages to get together, sample local products and services, and have a night out. TWCCC director, Sarah Wormald, said around 50 people took the opportunity to have a brief shoulder massage, sample home-cooked delicacies and learn face-painting, as well as buy quality products at great prices. “It was a really good opportunity for local businesses to showcase who they are,” Sarah said. “But more importantly it was an opportunity for local mums in the community to have a

night out, relax and enjoy the company of each other.” Some of the stalls on the night included Enjo, The Body Shop, Tupperware and Basic Beauty, showcasing everything from handbags and hair clips to beauty products and oil. “It was a lot of fun and a very relaxed atmosphere,” Sarah said. “Everyone was open to having a good time (and) it was a great opportunity for staff to interact with a lot of the mums in a relaxed way.” Two Wells resident Michelle Dimasis attended the night with her mum, Lorraine Prior, and had a lovely time. “It was good fun,” she said. “The stalls were good, the food was good, it was great.” The centre hopes to hold a similar night in the future, perhaps coinciding with Mother’s Day.

Kids lead push for skate park Nine-year-old Two Wells resident Trent Harding believes the town should have a skate park so much, off his own back, he braved the daunting task of approaching District Council of Mallala for support. That was more than six months ago, and while council could not find funds in this year’s budget, support for the project is gathering momentum, with a group of local youths banding together to run a fruit salad and ice-cream stall at this year’s Two Wells Christmas street parade. In Year 4 at Trinity College, Trent believes a skate park in the town would help keep the kids of the community active, and get them off the street. “I used to have to get up early in the morning to go to the skate park in Elizabeth before all the big kids got there,” Trent said. “It would mean that we wouldn’t have to travel so far just to have fun. “And it gives them (other youths in Two Wells) something to do. “It also gets them off the road. “Footpaths are for people to walk down and not for scooters and skateboards to go down.” Young local resident, Jack Lange, 14, also believes the town is in desperate need of something for the youths of the area and says

Getting behind the push for a skate park are young local residents, from left, Trent Harding, 9; Alex Richter, 10, of Lewiston; Blake Catanzariti, 15; Jack Lange, 14 and Jayden Watkins, 15 who say there is nowhere to skate safely in the town. a skate park would provide opportunities for skaters and BMX riders as well as those who use scooters. Jack says the BMX track established only a few years ago is not

challenging enough for older riders and would welcome a skate park with more difficult jumps, ramps and rails. “There’s nothing really to do here

and there’s nowhere to ride,” he said. “The BMX track doesn’t really have jumps, they’re more roll-overs, it’s a bit easy.” TWRAT member, local business-

man and Jack’s dad, Tony Lange, fully supports the push for a skate park and is keen to see how other communities have gone about the process. Tony said he was planning to put together costings for a skate park and hopefully present something to District Council of Mallala in the near future. “If we can get council to approve it in principle then we can go from there and try and raise a bit of money,” he said. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said while council supported the idea of a skate park in the town, it would have to be considered as part of an overall main street and recreational planning process. “It’s not to put it to one side and forget about it,” Mr Mansueto said. “But how we can think about it in terms of the broader community and town centre upgrade.” All of the boys the Echo spoke to said they were willing to give up their time and put in the effort to help raise funds for a skate park, so if you’re heading to the street parade why not stop by their stall for a bowl of fruit salad and ice-cream? If you want to support the skate park idea, email the Two Wells Regional Action Team at jeanettelaughton@hotmail.com

It was not a night for the faint hearted, with ghosts, ghouls, vampires and witches galore at the Two Wells Neighbourhood Watch Halloweenthemed Blue Light Disco on Friday, November 4. But thrown amongst all the sharp teeth, crazy hair and capes, were a lot of flashing bunny ears, cheeky grins, fluro sunglasses and smiling faces. Celebrating the final disco for the year, a large crowd of almost 150 youngsters, hit the dance floor full of enthusiasm and energy. Neighbourhood Watch secretary, Maria Aunger, was thrilled with the turnout and with the range of costumes on the night. “So many kids dressed up and it was just wonderful,” Maria said. “There were so many amazing costumes. We were really rapt they took the time and the effort to do that.” This was the last disco of the year, with part proceeds from all Blue Lights being put back into the community, including donations to the Scouts and Two Wells Primary School. Neighbourhood Watch would like to thank everyone involved for their support throughout the year, and looks forward to seeing everyone again in 2012. n Next year’s first Blue Light Disco will be held at Two Wells Community Centre on February 24.

two wells rsl’s night of entertainment

Run, Rally, Rock!

Under grey skies and threatening rain, about 1,000 people gathered at Virginia oval on Saturday November 19 for the Run, Rally, Rock concert. Hosted by Two Wells RSL and supporting childhood and brain cancer research, the event had the crowd – all snuggled up, sitting in camping chairs or on picnic rugs – enjoy a myriad of entertainers from across the generations. Organiser and Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, said the whole venture had been a success. “The acts themselves were just awesome,” Tony said. “Some of them are world class acts and they’re already saying they want to come back again.” Throughout the day and into the night, there was music from the 70s and 80s as well as up and coming stars, with attractions for the event including bands Acoustic Juice, The Rustlers, and Bjorn Again. Syndicate, the Rolling Thunder Band and Cold Chisel Revisited also belted out a few tunes. Local band Azz If gave a great performance, with the crowd singing along to many of the well-known cover songs, and funny-men Rob and Tahir, from the hit TV show Fat Pizza, made sure everyone kept warm with a few laughs. “These guys were terrific,” Tony said. “They had the girls at the

front doubled up with laughter, and then after their set they spent the next four hours wandering amongst the crowd. “Everybody really enjoyed themselves immensely and the response was over the moon.” Solo artists Tori Darke and James Abberley also showed their talents, singing strong ballad songs. As well as the extensive range of musical talent on offer, the Run, Rally, Rock event saw a myriad of rides, and food stalls aplenty, to keep the younger concertgoers entertained. And in the middle of the oval a few dedicated car and motorbike enthusiasts had brought along their pride and joy to share. Two Wells volunteer Di Allpike thoroughly enjoyed the event, saying it was a great night for the community, and despite lower than expected numbers, an opportunity for everybody to relax and be entertained. “I had a ball, it was a terrific night,” she said. “Acoustic Juice got everybody up and jigging (and) the fireworks display was excellent, it lit up the sky.” Bjorn Again were the final act for the night, and had the crowd up on its feet and rocking, Di said.

n Letter to the Editor n

Congratulations to RSL

My sister and I attended the Two Wells RSL Rocks fundraiser for brain cancer at Virginia. When walking towards the front gate we were just astounded at how large the event looked. There were show rides, fireworks, food and wine stalls, car displays as wells as plenty of acts on the mammoth stage. Performances by Cold Chisel and ABBA cover bands belted out tunes throughout the evening much to the delight of the audience. Clearly Two Wells RSL had put a lot of time and effort into this event and should be extremely proud of what they achieved and the widespread enjoyment from those who attended.

I am confident in saying if they decide to make it an annual or biennial event it will only grow bigger each time and will be a huge success I have no doubt there will be many keen to contribute and attend in the following years. The Two Wells RSL Rocks event demonstrated a range of positive attributes. These included raising funds for a worthy cause, promoting local businesses, building community morale and exposing the local area to the wider demographic. Congratulations to the RSL, volunteers and all involved in making it a wonderful day/evening of entertainment. Danielle Fattori, Two Wells

‘Enviro’ assets

In past editions I have talked about some of the environmental assets that I believe exist within our region, and the volunteer groups that have implemented restoration and revegetation projects within these sites, including Lewiston Wetlands, Camel Reserve, Gawler River, and the Samphire Coast, just to name a few. I know there are more, so if you know of other environmental assets within our region, which we could visit and promote to other like-minded people let the Landcare group know. I recently attended a value mapping workshop organised by the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board (AMLRNMB) to promote a web-based tool enabling the community to inform the AMLRNMB what natural resources we as a community value. This on-line program will give you the opportunity to inform the AMLRNMB what environmental assets you value. All the information collected will be used to support the development of the next natural resources management plan for the region. To access this web-based tool and have your say on what you value within our region visit the AMLRNMB web site www.amlrnrm.sa.gov.au Sunday 13th November was the official opening of the Gawler Rivers Path - Tapa Pariara. As a child I spent many a day down the river with my friends catching tadpoles and yabbies. I believe rivers and creeks are an important part of growing up and it’s one of those places where you find adventure. So next time you are in Gawler take some time and stroll along these paths, it is a great opportunity to view a riparian eco-system without getting your feet wet. (Riparian zone is an eco-system outlined by the vegetation that is visible along the river system). Bands lead Santa in our big parade

This year’s Two Wells Christmas street parade is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever with not one, but two marching bands The free event on Friday, December 16, will have the City of Enfield Brass Band and the Tea Tree Gully Redbacks Concert Band march in the parade and entertain throughout the night. The main street will be closed to traffic from 4.30pm to allow community members the chance to sample food and products from a range of stalls. On offer will be everything from exotic filled liquorice, gelati, sausages and home made preserves to baked potatoes, jewelry, baby gear, cards and fruit salad.

For the kids there’ll be a jumping castle, and of course the chance to meet Father Christmas in Teddy Bear hall. And helping the man in red meet and greet all the youngsters will be the newly crowned parade prince and princess. Two Wells Craft Shop will also be open, so why not drop in, admire the recent renovations inside and do some Christmas shopping. The local Scout group will have come-and-try activities and following the parade, the Two Wells CFS will be staging a simulated road crash. There is bound to be something for everyone, so why not take the opportunity to get out with family and friends for a great, community-centered night?

Let’s keep our ‘nest’ free from rubbish It’s not often that I perceive any negatives about living in Lewiston. However, whilst out for a walk the other day, it disappointed me to see a pile of illegally dumped rubbish left at the corner of Aunger and Hayman Roads. The saying is that birds won’t dirty their own nest, or words to that affect, yet some people obviously have. There is no room in Lewiston for this irresponsible, un-community minded, and illegal behaviour. I hope that the culprit/s come to their senses before they are caught, and fined, by the increasing number of hot-spot hidden cameras used to detect and reduce these cases of illegal dumping. On a brighter note, the latest addition to my Lewiston Bird Photo Collection is a willie wagtail. Lewiston has numerous of these energetic, cheerful birds. One in particular does the rounds of my house, once in the morning and once in the evening, munching the insects from the windows and anywhere else it can find them. If I block it’s favourite route, by selfishly relaxing and drinking beer under the veranda, it voices its displeasure and hops around, hopping mad I presume. Also it makes good use of my birdbath; not for drinking purposes, but as a diving pool. Two Wells Echo, December, 2011

NEW

HOT & COLD FOOD BAR

It’s Karaoke time at the New Dublin Hotel New Dublin Hotel has always stood out from the crowd for serving fresh and generous serves of food, friendly service, and having a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere for families. With more on offer, the hotel has now been granted a TAB sports bet racing licence which starts Thursday, December 1. Owners Eric and Jane feel very fortunate to enter this new chapter in their business. “Unlike many other pubs, the hotel is designed with the front bar away from the dining areas and won’t affect the dining customers at all, so families as well as punters can enjoy and relax,” Jane said. Ten brand new large flat screen televisions have already been installed, with both racing channels available for your enjoyment. Now Christmas and New Year’s Eve is approaching, the hotel is gearing up for the festivities with many Christmas

functions already booked, although there are some dates still available. The hotel will be open on Christmas morning from 9:00am until 11:00am, so be sure to get in quick so you don’t miss out on the Christmas specials. Celebrations for New Year’s Eve are set for a fun filled night with DJ Craig Anthony playing something for everyone, plus Karaoke, prizes and drink specials. Bookings are still available for dinner which will include the chef specials of the night as well as the regular menu with the Soup, Salad and Vegetable Bain Marie free with all main meals. As the hotel supports Responsible Service of Alcohol, getting to and from the Hotel has always been a breeze as most people are aware the hotel provides a free mini-bus service door to door. Please contact the hotel for bookings on 85 292 116 or to plan your next function.

THE Two Wells Division 2 team, consisting of (from left) James Gameau, Angas Tapscott, Caitlin Musolino and Jamie Humphrys have enjoyed a great start to the season. After being on the brink of closure last year, the Two Wells Tennis Club has seen a resurgence of interest over the past 12 months, which has kept the “ball in court” as far as keeping the club surviving goes. Alack of funds to repay loans – due to declining membership - meant an emergency meeting was called late last year to help lift the profile of tennis in the town and raise some much needed money. Club president Lynette Seccafien said a number of successful fundraising ventures, including a unique “running of the balls” event and Friday night social tennis, as well as donations from local residents and businesses, helped get the club back on its feet. As a parent of a player and having been involved with the club since she was a junior, Lynette says the sport has a lot to offer. “It’s good for everybody to be active,” she said.

“Team sports provide significant unseen benefits (like) cooperation, collaboration, communication and team building skills. “It’s a great way to be active and have fun at the same time.” Junior coordinator Marie Tapscott agrees the club has seen some low times in the past few years, but is excited by the interest and growing support from the community. “We’ve fundraised around $8000 over the past year, which has been terrific,” Marie said. “And we’ve secured grants for new nets and net posts, as well as some new junior coaching gear and balls.” This season has seen the club provide coaching for more than 30 keen youngsters and field four junior teams. Two, four-member teams are competing in the competitive division two level, with another two teams entered into the non-competitive division three competition.

Marie says the interest in the club this year has been fantastic, with increased parental support making things run more smoothly. “We’ve had great support from the division three parents this year,” she said. “We’ve had all the parents out there being umpires, line judges and ball chasers, and generally helping out. “It’s been great.” Competing as part of the Lower North Tennis Association, the club plays against teams from Long Plains, Balaklava, Hamley Bridge, Owen and Mallala. Each week players are required to play a singles and doubles match, with division three members playing sudden death (this is where, when the game gets to deuce, or 40/40, whoever wins the next point wins that game). “We like them to do a season of coaching and then enter a team the next year, which is division

three,” Marie continued. “This is a non-competitive division, it’s a learning competition. “Most of the kids out there are either brand new or have had one season, so it’s a good division for learning.” The division two teams this year are showing great promise and are great ambassadors for the club with their lovely manners, sportsmanship and endeavour for the game. Helping guide these young tennis stars is experienced coach Brian Lloyd. Brian has been coaching at Two Wells for at least the last three years, and is a great asset to the club, Marie said. “He’s great with the beginners especially,” she said. “He’s very thorough with the technical side of tennis, teaching them the right way to hold the racquet, which way to step, that sort of thing. “And he likes to do a lot of games with the kids, so it’s not just hitting the

ball, it’s a lot of fun.” Marie says Brian concentrates on skill development, with the more advanced junior members and has this year even incorporated a fitness circuit into their training session. Being a summer sport, it can often get quite hot out on the court, and if the temperature is forecast 38 degrees or above, for Elizabeth on Friday night, all matches are cancelled. A family-friendly orientated club, the Two Wells Tennis Club is this season leaving two nets set up at the courts for members, families, and anyone in the community to use, free of charge. So why not grab a racquet and head up to the courts for a hit? Or better yet, visit the club on a Monday night and see what it’s all about. For more information about Two Wells Tennis Club, contact president Lynette Seccafien on 0428 400 161 or junior coordinator Marie Tapscott on 0419 838 929.

Funding a boost for local clubs

The dream of a new sporting clubroom facility is a step closer with the recent receival of cheques from the State Government’s Office of Recreation and Sport’s Active Club Program. The local tennis club, cricket and the football and netball clubs all received their cheques from Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, on November 15. Ms Vlahos said it was a pleasure to be able to hand over the money to the clubs and was looking forward to the day when the grounds could host an association grand final. “This is part of a long-term vision for the township and it’s part of a community hub,” she said. “I am very excited to hand over these cheques, which I know are going to have active and worthwhile outcomes. “I know that they will use this money to better the clubs for the future and I look forward to seeing a grand final at the Two Wells oval in the future.” The Two Wells Tennis Club has secured $3,500 to contribute towards the purchase of new nets, net posts and court cleaners. Funding for the Two Wells Cricket Club was $3000, with the money going towards the sporting club’s upgrade, which will include an equipment storage room. The Football and Netball Sporting Club won $10,500, which will contribute to the replacement of the club’s air-conditioning system and cool-room.

The busy holiday season is coming so it is a good time to be reminded of a few simple tips to keep safe and secure. Are you prepared? • Lock your shed as well as your house when you go out. • Is your valuable property marked? Engraving, UV Pen and Data Dots are all useful aids to help with identification of your property should it be stolen. • See someone busy with graffiti? Report it on 131 444. • Keep your car locked when parked and don’t leave valuables on display inside (eg handbag or GPS). • When shopping, keep your wallet/handbag close and don’t flash your cash. • If you see any suspicious behaviour on school grounds, report it on 131 444. • If going on holidays, don’t advertise it. Ask a friend or neighbour to collect your mail and bring your bin in. • Party safely - don’t drink and drive. • If you see or hear any criminal or suspicious behaviour, report it on 131 444. We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. The first Neighbourhood Watch meeting for 2012 will be a joint meeting with Mallala Neighbourhood Watch, held on Tuesday 7th February at 7-30pm in the Mallala Museum Schoolhouse. Tea, coffee and light refreshments will be provided afterwards. Everyone is welcome.

Two Wells Blue Light

Our last gothic, ghosts and ghouls Blue Light disco was a great success, with so many wonderful and innovative costumes. It was a challenge to pick the best! We would like to thank everyone who has supported the Two Wells Blue Light throughout the year – we hope you enjoyed the discos and will return again next year. Many thanks also to the wonderful people who volunteer their time to help supervise on the night, your help is much appreciated. The dates for next year’s Blue Light Discos will be: 24th February, 27th April, 10th August and 26th October, so mark them in your diary. Hope to see you there! Two Wells Echo, December, 2011

NEWS in brief

Two Wells CFS

– By PR officer Sara Oljey It’s been a bit of a mixed bag weather wise this month, but rest assured, the hot weather will be here to stay soon enough. The thunderstorms have been pretty spectacular and so far we have been only slightly affected. We have had 47 call outs for the month, which included road crashes, grass fires and bonfires. Our CFS Brigade and that of Virginia will be at the Christmas Street Parade as usual, and afterwards will be putting on a road crash simulated exercise. We hope many will stay around and watch. As always we are in need of new members. If you are at all considering it, please come and talk to us, you will be most welcome, or call us on 8520 2500. Training is on Monday evenings at 7:30pm.

Members’ Xmas

The Two Wells RSL will be holding its members’ Christmas night on Friday December 23, from 6pm. BYO plate of food to share and presents for any children coming along. Last night for public teas at the RSL will be December 9, with the club hosting a sausage sizzle out the front of the premises during the Two Wells Christmas Street Parade on December 16.

Christmas appeal

Two Wells Public Library will once again participate in the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas Appeal. After terrific community response in previous years, donations are now being called for non-perishable foods, toys and small gifts. Unwrapped donations can be left at either the Two Wells Public Library or the Mallala Branch Library until Tuesday December 13.
