Council delays rates decision DISCTRICT Council of Mallala has opted to retain the council’s current rating system until at least July 1 next year. Elected members had the option of applying the proposed new land use rating system, replacing the current planning zone system currently in place, at Monday night’s council meeting. “Council have decided to defer the decision for further consultation with the community, to begin in the next

No change for at least another year

financial year,” DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto confirmed. He said some councillors believed they needed more input from the community before making a decision to switch the rating system. “The general feeling was councillors also wanted to look at other options,” Mr Mansueto said.

Such options included fixed charges and services charges alternatives, which was raised during council’s community consultation. The next community consultation stage will begin from July 1. Given council already held an extensive consultation phase, which was launched in early February, including

two public meetings and yielding more than 20 public submissions, finding a method of community consultation that would allow council’s elected members to make a decision either way becomes a new issue. “That’s something we have to work through in coming months,” Mr Mansueto said.

Elected members also attended a recent series of workshops presenting the different rating options to council, the first session held as recently as October last year. Councils are obligated to regularly review their respective rate policies, with DCM’s current planning zone system due to come under review after being in place for the past 20 years. •Continued Page 2

Tony said it was important the youth of a town had their voices heard, and said the committee would be asking for their continuing involvement. “At every stage we’ll be involving the kids. Every step of the way we’ll be asking for their input,” he said. “It’s a key focus for the group this year.” The team is also hoping to set up an email address and possibly a facebook page to post ideas and suggestions and messages of support.

Have your say on housing development Two Wells residents will get the chance to voice their praise, concerns or ideas about the District Council of Mallala’s proposed housing development for north of the town at a community “Drop In” day later this month. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said the council had organised for the proposed development plans, as well as representatives from both council and housing developer Hickinbotham, to be present at the April 29 open day, to hear what the community thought of the proposal. “It’s another opportunity for people to

look at the plans and to ask questions,” Mr Mansueto said. The open day was another step in the long process of getting the development approved by Minister for Planning, John Rau, he said, with the official consultation process beginning on March 29. Hickinbotham Group managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, said the company was pleased to be a part of council’s drop in day and would have members of its design and project team on hand to discuss the draft plan with residents. “People will be able to see how the ideas, suggestions and aspirations from

The consultation period closes on May 31, with submissions being heard at a special community meeting on June 13. Information about the proposed development or the submission process can be found on council’s website www.mallala. sa.gov.au or by visiting either the Two Wells or Mallala council offices. WHEN and WHERE: The open day will be held at the Two Wells Catholic Church Hall on Sunday April 29 from 12noon until 4pm.

Council rates delay

• From Page 1 Mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, indicated in a letter to ratepayers about two months ago, council’s rating system was fairly outdated. “There have been no significant changes to the system during that time, while over the same period, there have been substantial changes to the composition and make-up of the district,” he said. “The reason for the review is to ensure council’s rating system satisfies the principles of taxation and is equitably applied to all ratepayers.” Mr Mansueto said council is effectively back at square one. “There has been a lot of work put in to it but we will just have to continue on with the review process starting next financial year,” he said.

Seeking council in-principle support is also something the team is working toward, Tony said, with a presentation of some of their ideas to councillors hopefully in the next few months. “The next step would be to formulate a plan,” Tony added. “We’re reviewing plans of other skate parks around the state and working on a design (and) we’ll be seeking some professional help after we have an outline of what we want.”

’ello cockie, who’s a pesky bird?

Corellas damaging trees and property

Native white Australian cockatoo numbers in Two Wells have swelled in recent months and the birds are causing so much environmental and property damage some residents believe action needs to be taken to reduce numbers. Two Wells resident, Ernie Landherr, whose property backs onto the local primary school where the birds are congregating, has contacted the District Council of Mallala to see what can be done. “It has become a nightmare with the noise level, bird droppings, feathers, destruction of the trees, branches, leaves etc all over the place and damage to external wiring around here,” Ernie said. “It’s disgusting and unworkable, and the noise they make is just incredible. “My backyard looks like it’s snowed because of all the feathers.” A volunteer at Two Wells Primary School, Ernie said he had lived in the town for the past 12 years and had never seen the corella numbers so high. “It’s plague proportions,” he said. “They’re here (at the school) all day.” The cockatoos, officially known as Little Corellas, but also called Bare-eyed cockatoos or Short-billed Corellas, have been feeding on the town and school oval and decimating pine and gum trees around the school, kindergarten and main street. Ernie said he was aware the Onkaparinga Council, in the south of Adelaide, was facing a similar problem with the birds, and had resorted to culling them; an option he believes DCM should consider. “If they can do it, why can’t Mallala council?”, he said. Two Wells Primary School principal, Cherie Collings, said this year was not the first the birds had caused problems. “Last year they chewed through the wires on the outside speakers on the gym roof,” Ms Collings said. “We had the wiring replaced and put

Bec O’Brien reports: conduit over the wiring, however the determined birds still managed to strip off the wiring with the conduit, so now we have to pay to have the wiring redone again.” Ms Collings said the groundsman and his assistants had now built wire cages to be placed over the wiring on the roof, once it is rewired. It is hoped this would stop them causing more damage. She said the birds were also covering play equipment, buildings and parked cars with droppings, which meant more work for school staff to remove them. “Their droppings are everywhere,” Ms Collings said. “So that means we need to have high pressure cleaning on playgrounds and buildings adding more work to the groundsman’s role. “They also make a lot of noise at times due to the sheer mass of them and their dropped feathers are another continual mess. But despite the mess, Ms Collings said the effects of the corellas needed to be taken into perspective, as the noise didn’t interfere with education and many students found them beautiful. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said council had received some complaints from local residents about the birds and would look into options of how to manage them. “We have been contacted by members of the community about their concerns,” Mr Mansueto said. “And given the issue is still here and causing problems, council will consider its options. “We will be discussing with authorities what options are available to us to manage the problem; in the meantime staff will be trying to clean up any mess created on council/public land to minimise the impact on the community.”

LOCAL NEWS IN BRIEF Transport survey: If public transport is an issue you want to see resolved in our area, then don’t forget to post in your transport surveys. Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, is coordinating the survey, and posted around 5000 of them to residents in the Two Wells, Lewiston and Port Wakefield Road corridor areas last month. A representative from Mrs Vlahos’ office said the responses had been flooding in but residents needed to return their surveys by Friday April 6 so the results could be collated and sent to Transport Minister, Chloe Fox.

Rail crossings: Road shoulders at two crossings along the Two Wells to Mallala Road have been widened in recent months as part of the State Government’s $2.3 million State Level Crossing Improvement Program. The crossings, at the intersections with Simpkin Road (Two Wells) and Pratt Road (Korunye), were upgraded to take into consideration sight distance, traffic volume and heavy vehicles. Road Safety minister, Jennifer Rankine, said the work reaffirms the State Government’s commitment to level crossing safety.

New carers for wells Council will take over from TWRAT By Bec O’Brien In a bid to improve its public appeal, care for one of the town’s oldest icons is being handed over to the District Council of Mallala. The historic wells area, situated adjacent to the trotting track in Two Wells, will now be maintained and cared for by DCM, with the council’s horticultural team set to give the site a makeover in coming months. In the past the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) has spent countless hours looking after, maintaining and improving the historic wells area, with regular working bees and community-led cleanup days. But in a letter sent to council at the start of the year, the group requested council take control of the area, citing limited resources and time of its members to continue with the upkeep of the site. In addition to caring for the wells area, TWRAT has asked the council to relocate the Cultural Heritage Iron Statues, which are currently positioned in a field along the Rotary Walk, to bush land near the wells. On behalf of TWRAT, member, Malcolm Frost, wrote in the letter:“It has become a site of regular visitation by tour operators and the general travelling public, and it importantly contributes to the wider image held for our region. “Given the limited capacity of our volunteer effort, our committee feels it is more appropriate to pass the responsibility for the historic wells area to District Council of Mallala for its further development, care and maintenance.” DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, agreed the wells were historically significant to the town and needed the site to be preserved, saying the care of will take on a more formal garden the wells had often been left to a setting in the future. Some of the things Pam and few volunteers, and it was time her team are looking to achieve council helped. “I think it’s important council include improved seating and the takes a bit more ownership of com- installation of a table around the gazebo, clearing out of weeds and munity facilities,” he said. “We need to be helping our undergrowth, and repairing the path where necessary. community groups more.” But the main focus will be on Leading the team set to makeoopening up the area and making it ver the wells area, is DCM senior horticulture officer, Pamela Drew, more visitor friendly. “I’d like to install some lawn who has big plans for the site. Two Wells RSL will be staging its annual Anzac Day Dawn Service at the town memorial, Old Port Wakefield Road, on Wednesday April 25 from about 6.20am RSL president, Tony Flaherty, will officiate, with everyone invited back to the RSL hall for a “gunfire” breakfast after the service.

more,” Pam said. “It will be a lot more inviting than what it is and we hope people will come here and utilise it more. “I’m quite excited about this area becoming a real formal park, of having that historic feel where people can come and say, ‘oh, this is what the historical wells area is like’.” Where possible, Pam said the horticulture team would use environmentally friendly materials, and create mulch from any vegetation removed from the area. TWRAT president, Eddie Stubing, is excited by the ideas and is pleased such a proactive approach is being taken to preserve and enhance the wells area. “I think it’s progressive,” he said. “The wells area is very much a part of Two Wells and we’ve come too far now to just have TWRAT take responsibility for it. “It’s going to be a partnership between the action team and the council. We don’t want to walk away completely.” While there is no provision for the makeover in this year’s budget, Pam hopes funds will be found in the 2012/13 financial budget.

Neighbourly!

That’s just part of the service from this special community group

I

n a time when many community groups are stretched for members, with some even folding, Two Wells and Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch Group is forging ahead with its mission to keep local residents safe, promote community and youth connections, and foster “neighbourly” actions of looking out for each other. The group was an initiative of local Lewiston residents in 1988 and was recently presented with its 20-year service certificate. Although the recognition was a few years late in coming, TW&LNHW secretary, Maria Aunger, said it was a significant achievement for the hardworking team of volunteers, as membership had considerably declined over the years. “We are very proud of the fact NHW is still supported in the Two Wells and Lewiston areas,” she said. “In June it will have been in operation for 24 years.” Neighbourhood Watch is a well-known organisation, with members across Australia numbering in the tens of thousands. Here, it is a program facilitated by the South Australian Police, in partnership with the Neighbourhood Watch Association (SA), with the police website stating, “Neighbourhood Watch is about safety in places where people live – about local police and communities working together to create safer suburbs and towns. “It is a community-based crime prevention program aimed at reducing crime through consultation, working together in a pro-active manner to address the causes of crime and to report crime that requires police attention. “By having a link with local police, residents are kept informed of emerging crime trends, new scams and changes in laws.” In the past Neighbourhood Watch has had to endure the tag of “nosey neighbours” but today its co-ordination of community activities, fight against crime and ability to foster and strengthen relationships is celebrated. Its focus on community is something the TW&LNHW group wholeheartedly supports. “This is what Neighbourhood Watch is all about – community,” Maria said. “It’s about looking out for one another, helping each other when necessary; it is not about spying on neighbours, as some may have you believe. “It’s about taking time to care and be aware of any suspicious behaviour to protect yourself and your neighbours.” The group is now much smaller than when it all started in 1988, and consists of the chairperson, Anne Porter, who has also been a zone representative since 1998; secretary and Two Wells area co-ordinator, Maria Aunger, who joined in 1995; treasurer Jennifer Nicol, who joined in 2003; Lewiston area co-ordinator Dave Body, who joined in 2003; and committee members Patrick Porter,

Bicycle security

Bicycles are stolen every day for various purposes such as long term personal use, a temporary means of transportation or as a source of money. With a little bit of common sense you can increase your bicycle security by identifying your bike with a drivers licence number prefixed by the letter ‘s’ for South Australia, for example, S12345. You can use an engraver or maybe an ultra violet pen. It is important to remember owning a bike has many responsibilities and your bike is not always at home locked away in the shed. Tips for parking your bike in public include: 4 Lock it to something that cannot be removed or the bicycle lifted off. 4 Park it in a place that is in public view and well lit. 4 Lock the frame and wheels to the parking rail or other object, particularly if your wheels have quick release mechanisms. 4 Remove items of equipment easily removed by others. 4 Lock your bicycle whenever you leave it, even for a short moment. ENGRAVER FOR HIRE: Your local Neighbourhood Watch group has an engraver for hire. Contact Maria Aunger on 8520 2328 or Dave Body on 8524 2036 for more details. NEXT MEETING: The next Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Tuesday 10th April 2012 at 7.30pm in the Two Wells RSL hall. The following meeting will be held on Tuesday May 8 at 7.30 pm. Everyone welcome. TWO WELLS BLUE LIGHT: Our next disco will be held on Friday, April 27, from 7pm to 9.30pm in the Two Wells Community Centre for ages 8 to 17 years. Entry is $5. DJ Andrew will be pumping out the music again, so come join us for a fun night out!

Two Wells Police officer, Brevet Sergeant Grant Devlin, has been the group’s police coordinator since 2001. In past years this small group has undertaken kerbside numbering in the township of Two Wells and the removal of graffiti from road signs, but unfortunately due to changes in safety regulations, Maria said it is no longer possible for the group to continue these activities. They have, however, “adopted” the railway building on the corner of Old Port Wakefield and Hayman Road, to ensure when the building has been defaced the graffiti is removed as quickly as possible.

Two Wells and Lewiston NHW members are also very proud of their achievement in supporting the youth of our local community and have been sponsoring and organising the Two Wells Blue Light discos for the past three years. These events have been held every few months and are proving to be very successful, with anything from 100-200 young people attending each time. In the past the discos had been run with the support of the Gawler Neighbourhood Watch group, Maria said, but at the end of 2011, Two Wells was officially appointed as an independent Blue Light group. “It’s a lot of fun,” she enthused. It’s great watching the kids have fun. “I think they love the fact

It was also an opportunity to give a little back Anne said, with the group making small donations to local organisations that have a youth base, including the Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club, Scouts and Two Wells Primary School. Monthly Neighbourhood Watch meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month at the Two Wells RSL hall at 7.30pm, and new members are always keenly welcomed. PA N C A K E S HAD THEM... Two Wells Uniting Church’s annual pancake stall and trading table has raised more than $500 this year. Held on Friday March 9 outside the Post Office, yummy pancakes, tea, coffee, and an assortment of home baked and homemade goods were on offer. Volunteer, Pam Duncan, said the funds would be donated to UnitingCare in Gawler and, coupled with the $780 the church raised last month at the Two Wells Primary School pancake event, now amounted to just over $1300. Mrs Duncan said many thanks needed to go to all the volunteers who had helped out on the day and to all who had donated, bought goods, and of course eaten the odd pancake or two!

Located just a short drive from Two Wells and Lewiston, Towler Mechanical is your well equipped mechanical workshop in the district. Towler’s fully qualified mechanics are experienced with diesel, LPG and petrol vehicles. Because of the nature of offroad driving, 4WD owners need to know their vehicles are reliable and mechanically sound enough to cope with the toughest conditions. Towler Mechanical has the only 4WD Dyno in the northern suburbs. With this specialised equipment Towler’s technicians are able to diagnose faults, check power and emissions, and tune vehicles to suit individual driving requirements. There are also many products available on today’s market that can be installed to improve your 4WD’s performance. Talk to the experts at Towler Mechanical who can advise you how to maximise

performance and driveability. For example, diesel chips can be installed to modify power and attain the best fuel economy. All vehicles are tested on the 4WD Dyno before the chip is fitted to establish a base level, then re-tested after installation. The vehicle owner can then see a visual display of changes to horsepower and torque. Towler Mechanical’s servicing, tuning and repairs are carried out meticulously, and mechanics are particularly careful in making sure your manufacturer’s warranty is not compromised. Towlers will provide you with a written report of all services carried out and, as a standard procedure, a safety check will be carried out on your vehicle. 4 For any further information about your 4WD, standard vehicle, commercial vehicle or light truck, call the friendly team at Towler Mechanical on 8280 9288 or drop in to 532 Waterloo Corner Road, Burton. Play is the way – with harmony

Harmony Day was celebrated at Two Wells Primary School last month with classes across the school participating in a range of activities. School counselor, Judy Sanders, said the school had recently adopted a new program, called “Play is the Way” to help foster better relationships between students, peers and staff. Mrs Sanders said the program was based around the philosophy of teaching children social skills through games, using language as its base, and followed five key concepts. “It fits in beautifully with Harmony Day because it’s looking at that harmonious way of getting along,” she said.

“It’s about relating to each other, and the lessons that you learn, actually can take you through life.” Key concepts include: 4 Treat others as you would like them to treat you 4 Be brave; participate to progress 4 Pursue your personal best no matter who you work with 4 Have reasons for the things you say and do 4 It takes great strength to be sensible Mrs Sanders said the games associated with the program were an excellent way to help students learn better social skills and work harmoniously with others, and was a great opportunity to give students skills for life.

Year R/1 students at Two Wells Primary School were read stories about getting along, appreciating differences and making friends by teacher/librarian Angela Heuzenroeder, as part of Harmony Day activities last month. Kelsey stepping out to London T Bec O’Brien reports

E

ighteen-year-old Kelsey Byrne feels she was born to dance. Having been involved in the dance based sport of calisthenics since the age of three, there is nothing this young Lewiston resident loves doing more than listening to a great piece of music and dancing her heart out. Not even a knee reconstruction last year could hold her back, with Kelsey back into dancing just three months after her operation. Kelsey has lived in Lewiston for the past 12 years with her mum, Tracey, dad, Paul and younger brother, Liam. She started her calisthenics journey with Northern Districts Calisthenics Club before joining the Elizabeth-based Gleneliz Calisthenics Club in 2007. “I can’t get away from dance at all. I love it too much,” Kelsey said. “I pretty much breathe dance.” Using clubs and rods, Kelsey participates in marching and dancing exercises at events all over the state as well as interstate. She is critiqued on style, grace, precision, musicality and costume. “I have millions of costumes,” she laughed. “Mum makes them. I was once the yellow Care Bear in one of my performances.” Her dance has led her to be involved in the annual Credit Union Christmas Pageant, an experience she says is so much fun and very rewarding. Through the sport Kelsey has met many people from around the country and overseas and has made some great friends. She has also had the opportunity to represent her country as part of the South Australian Precision Team at three International Police Tattoos, which were held here in Adelaide at

the Entertainment Centre. “It was awesome,” Kelsey said. “The first year I got to march with the police horses and to dance in front of thousands of people was amazing. Kelsey’s proud Mum, Tracey, said her daughter not only had a great passion for dance but also a great commitment and great strength. “When she was selected in the first Precision Team she was only seven years old,” Tracey said. “Each team she has danced in, she has had to audition for selection (and) last year, Kelsey was selected to represent our country again in

the Precision team to perform in the Big Dance in London in the lead up to the Olympics.” The Big Dance event involves competitions and workshops that showcase the Australian calisthenics style of dance to an international audience, with the team comprising 23 girls from calisthenics clubs from all over Adelaide. The team will fly to London on July 4, a few weeks before the Olympic Games begin, and Kelsey can hardly wait – this will be her first overseas trip. “I haven’t been anywhere further than Melbourne yet,” she said. While in London, Kelsey has a tight dance

schedule but will also have the opportunity to travel to the famous world heritage listed Stonehenge, and the Roman city of Bath, and is looking forward to getting caught up in the hype of the London Olympic Games. “We’ve got five routines that we’ve learnt but none of them include clubs or rods,” she said. “It’s just pure dance and as well as the competitions and workshops, we also get to dance with the Royal ballet, so that will be cool.” But it’s a long and expensive road to London and Kelsey, along with her calisthenics club, is fundraising hard to make it there. As well as her calisthenics, Kelsey has just become involved with the Allstars Cheerleading Club cheering for the Central Districts Football Club (CDFC). The skills she is learning there are just another string to her bow, and Kelsey said she is relishing the opportunity to dance something different. “It’s not calisthenics at all,” she said. “It’s all hip-hop dance, it’s awesome. But it’s a bit of a challenge because it’s a different path for me but I’m picking it up really well.” Kelsey attended Angle Vale Primary School and graduated from Gawler High School in 2010. Despite having a Certificate 2 in retail and a Certificate 1 in hospitality, Kelsey is still looking for her dream job, with her current role at Holden’s in Elizabeth supporting her dance dreams. “When I left school I had no idea what I wanted to do,” she said. “I know I just want to keep on dancing but I need to keep working so I can afford to dance.” Kelsey also is working three days a week at a hairdressing salon in Angle Vale, and volunteers to help teach the junior Ministar cheerleaders at CDFC. She hopes to one day have a career in dance. www.twowellsecho.com.au

echo 10 MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From Lewiston ward Councillor Duncan Kennington

Photographers, get snapping

Decision time

DISTRICT Council of Mallala currently is deliberating on several issues of relevance to residents. The rating structure review has been conducted and council has made a decision not to change at this stage. (See article on page one and two of this edition). A copy can be found on the council’s website. One thing’s for sure, none of us enjoy paying rates, another tax, so it’s worth understanding it so – if nothing else – at least you know you’re not being overcharged. It’s also worthwhile familiarising yourself with where the money goes. You will then be in a better position to inform councillors how you want the resources distributed when the rates issue again arises. • The district Draft Animal Management Plan currently is under consideration. I would think almost all residents have pets of one sort or another. The plan may be coming up for community consultation soon. Make the most of the opportunity to participate in the community consultation so when the plan is finalised it best meets the needs of residents. Councillors who are members of the Animal Management Committee include Karen McColl, Tom Summerton, Terry Keen, and Ann Picard. •While reclining in a chair conversing with a fellow councillor, I was pleasantly distracted by the site of an example of my favourite lizard, a goanna, just outside of the window. It’s not the first goanna, sand monitor, that I have spotted on my property. It wasn’t quite as big as the goanna featured in Mark Webb’s article (below) for this edition. In fact it was only about a foot (300mm) long. I may stand corrected but anecdotal evidence suggests the local (goanna) population is increasing over time.

For all those budding photographers out there, it’s time to pick up your camera and start snapping away. The District Council of Mallala launched its 2012 Photography Competition on Friday March 23 in support of the National Year of Reading. The competition is in its second year and follows the themes of “Get Caught in the Act of Reading” and “Essentially Adelaide Plains”. Photo entries could capture individuals, groups (or animals) reading books in interesting places, including the Adelaide Plains and beyond. Competition categories are up to 12 years, 12 – 18 years and Open (over 18 years), and are free to enter. Framed and mounted entries, along with entry and permission forms, must be submitted by 5pm Friday May 4. Entry forms and conditions are available at Two Wells Public Library, Mallala and Two Wells council offices or online at www.mallala. sa.gov.au. Further information can also be obtained by contacting Angela Nicklin on 8527 0218 or email AngelaN@Mallala.sa.gov.au.

Have you met the local goannas? n I have spoken about the importance of creating habitat corridors, so our native animals can move around our district. I have had countless friends tell me that they have seen a goanna on their property; unfortunately I cannot say the same. The diversity of flora and fauna within our region is a testament to the land management practices that we land holders have implemented. One of the most common goannas in Australia is the Sand Monitor; within our district they are active in the warmer months. A goanna digs its own burrow and is a good tree climber and will readily take refuge in a tree if a burrow is not nearby. The goanna is an active forager which tracks down and digs out lizards, insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes and even small mammals i.e. rabbits. So if you live near an area of woodland, shrub land and grassland growing on sandy soils you may be lucky enough to come across one of our resident

With Mark Webb

goannas. But remember our native animals have little or no defence against our pets (dogs, cats) and feral animals (fox) that early settlers brought to this new land. By planting indigenous native plants throughout our region you are helping to create and build on to existing habitat corridors. If we work together we can all experience the native animals that live within our region. If you happen to see a goanna around your area we would like to know about it. n I am currently studying sustainability and would like to share some ideas on how we can all make a difference to our ecological footprint. Rainwater harvesting is an option since a majority of residents within our

district have the available space to have a rain water tank. The roof area of my house is 160 square meters; if the annual rainfall within our region is approx 400mm I should be able to collect approx 64,000 litres of water per year. This is an example and it does not matter how big or small your rainwater tank is, but it’s about what we can do to manage our water resources in a sustainable way. By harvesting your own rainwater you are able to reduce the usage of potable water (mains water) per year, reduce the drain on our existing water supplies i.e. (River Murray) and save money. About 40 per cent of household water is used in the garden. Two Wells, Lewiston and Districts Landcare Group, are happy to provide support to landholders in the region and to discuss land management strategies Email: twowellslewistonlandcare@ y7mail.com. Sale a winner for RSL

Two Wells RSL held a St Patrick’s Day garage sale last month, with everything on offer from books, bric-a-brac, clothes and homemade

cakes to plants, magnets, knitted scarves and jewellery. RSL president, Tony Flaherty, said the first time event was a great

opportunity to meet and greet people from the community and raise funds for the club at the same time, and resulted in four new members signing up. Eager bargain hunters were treated to a range of stalls and afterwards had the chance to fill up on delicious cakes, coffee and a sausage in bread. “It was a successful first time run,” Tony said. “We had more than 100 people throughout

the day (and) there were a number of people who signed up as members too, which was really terrific.” Mr Flaherty said two of the new members were Vietnam War veterans. Subject to council approval, Mr Flaherty said the RSL was planning a similar event for later in the year, with a November 18 date in mind, which could see many more stalls take over the neighbouring car park.

Best awarded at TW cricket windup Two Wells Cricket Club wrapped up a successful summer season on Saturday March 24, with the Under 16 junior team taking home the perpetual shield. The club celebrated at its season end presentation that same night, and acknowledged the efforts of its other teams all reaching the finals in the Para District Cricket Association (PDCA). Club president, Michael Dimasis, said it was a strong overall improvement on last year by the club, which had welcomed the addition of two women’s teams into the competition. “Overall it was a good year and a good atmosphere at the club,” Michael said. “We were very successful this season, with Two Wells making the finals in all grades. “We hope to improve next season and are looking to enter two men’s teams.” After missing out on the finals last year, the

Women’s Team Red trophy winners were Stacy Dugmore (batting) and Hayley Dissinger (fielding & 4-wicket taker). Absent Karen Penhall and Megan Curry. senior men’s team finished third after the minor round competition in Grade 4. Unfortunately they were knocked out of the first final by Elizabeth East and ended the season in fourth place. New to the club this year was the inclusion of women’s cricket, which entered two teams into the B Grade competition. Women’s coordinator, Leanne Pool, said both teams saw finals action, with Team White finish-

ing third and Team Red cementing fourth place. “In our first year of having women’s teams it was a pretty good effort having both teams in the finals,” Leanne said. “And we’ve already got four more interested players for next year.” After sharing a barbeque tea, season award winners were announced for outstanding bowling, batting and fielding prowess for the year, with some players also taking out association gongs.

Women’s Team White trophy winners were Alex Haynes (PDCA & club fielding), Stefanie Aworth (PDCA & club bowling), Leanne Pool (Club batting & PDCA Cricketer of the Year), and Rachael Forbes (Captain’s Award).

TWCC senior trophy winners were Devon Hardiman (fielding), Daniel Hines (bowling), Jason Harris (batting) and Tim Henwood (100-run club).

Under 16 Junior trophy winners were Lachlan Goss, Jarrett Wilson and William Hart.

2012 ROAD SAFETY AMBASSADOR United Football Club Ambassador: Kelvin Gameau

1. Why did you get involved with the Road Safety Ambassador role at your club? I got involved really to make the younger lads aware of their responsibilities on the road and get them to look out for each other. It seems to be the group most at risk is those drivers under 30, the young adults. 2. What have you done so far in your role as Road Safety Ambassador? The club has put up all of the MAC literature and posters around the clubrooms to help spread the message. We’ve also distributed the stubbie holders too. So we’re using all the gear and making sure it’s about the club to get the community to relate it back to the advertising campaign. 3. What impact do you think the campaign has had on the club and community? It gets everyone to look out for each other a bit more. So, if someone is doing something wrong or about to make a stupid decision, there is someone there to pull up and remind them of their responsibilities.

Two Wells Cricket Club’s 5-wicket takers for season 2011/12 were Peter Seccafien, Daniel Hines, Travis Wake and Dylan Wise.

Under 16’s cricket glory

n TWO Wells Under 16 premiers, back from left: coach Greg Wilson, Joshua Pellizzari, Brandon Daly, Shannon Slattery, Harrison Gameau, Charlie McIntyre, Lauchlan Waters, scorer Martin Hart. Front: Jarratt Wilson, Brett Musolino, Nikolas Seccafien, captain Lachlan Goss, Kyle Giniotis and William Hart.

Two Wells took out the Under 16 Para District Cricket Association grand final against Salisbury West on Saturday. Over two days, the Two Wells boys bowled, batted and fielded well to chase down Salisbury West’s score of 120.

Captain Lachlan Goss won the toss and chose to bowl against the highest run scoring team in the competition. He followed that decision by taking a wicket in the first over, after a great catch by Harry Gameau. Brandan Daly, William Hart,

Jarrett Wilson and Brett Musolino also took wickets. The team’s fielding was great, building pressure throughout the game. With 120 runs to win, Kyle Giniotis and Nikolas Seccafien, along with Lachlan Goss, had Two Wells at 1/60 after 10 overs

at the end of the first day. After a couple of setbacks the next day, William Hart and Jarrett Wilson steered the side to the premiership, with Will Hart completing a standout season with 39 not out to go with his bowling of 4/17.

Two Wells takes out junior tennis premiership

THE Two Wells 1 team revelled in success on Saturday, after winning the Lower North Junior Tennis Association Division Two grand final, four sets, 31 games to Balaklava Gold two sets, 18 games. The premiership team consisted of Jamie Humphrys, James Gameau, Angus Tapscott and Caitlin Musolino, who are to be congratulated for their great talent and continuing desire to improve, enabling them to succeed in the 2011/12 season. The many spectators who supported their teams were entertained with a high quality of tennis, terrific sportsmanship and commendable etiquette displayed by both teams. The ‘Awesome 4-Some’ at a Glance: Jamie and James, who at the end of the season rotated each week playing positions one and two, are both evenly talented players, each week playing a high standard of tennis. Jamie is well known throughout the as-

sociation for his excellent tennis etiquette and honesty. James finished the season and final series undefeated, an impressive achievement considering he has returned to tennis after a couple of years’ break. Well done! Angus and Caitlin are great improvers, as both have risen from Division Three last season into a competitive Division Two. This has been a huge jump for both, but to their credit, has seen them thrive within the competition by the season’s end. Angus has advanced in all areas of his game this year, showing great persistence to develop his ever improving skills. Caitlin’s passion for tennis and desire for improvement have seen her confidence and game continually improve. These players are great ambassadors for the club, with the future of tennis looking bright at Two Wells. – Christine Musolino, team manager

Winter sport’s back

Excitement mounts as first game at Hamley By Bec O’Brien

The cricket pitch has been covered and the tennis nets taken down, now it’s time to pull on the footy boots boys and cut your nails girls, as the 2012 Adelaide Plains football and netball season gets underway on April 14. Two Wells has a bye first up, so the first official game for the club will be held on Saturday April 21 at home against Hamley Bridge. While senior footballers have been in training since November last year, the future stars of the club, the U8s and U11s, will hit the field for the first time on Thursday April 5 at 5pm. Junior netballers took to the court late last month and will train on Thursday nights, with a time yet to be finalised. The club has entered senior A1, A2, A3, A4 and A5 teams, with junior teams in the D grade (11 & under), C1 and C2 grades (13 & under), and B grade (15 & under) competition. Tea and bar facilities will be on offer at the club every home game and after training on Thursday nights. Good luck to everyone hitting the field or court. Go you Roosters!

ABOVE: Two Wells players Brad Fitzgerald and Ned Seccafien close in as BroughtonMundoora tries to get the ball away.

Dust off your Akubras and polish your boots cause Two Wells is having a Hoedown!! Saturday, April 21, Two Wells Football & Netball Sporting Club will be hosting a country hoedown and you’re all invited. The DJ will be spinning some classic country tracks to get you line dancing. Cover charge is $5 payable on the night.
