$50,000 club boost

Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club has secured $50,000 in AFL funding to help keep its long-awaited redevelopment on track. The funds were granted from the AFL’s Facilities Fund, which aims to “provide funding assistance to football bodies to partner with local stakeholders to improve football facilities and increase participation in the game”. Club president, Francis Pellizzari, has wel-

comed news of the funding, with plans for the upgrade currently in the hands of an architect for fine-tuning. “Initially we were $50,000 short with funding from the government, so from the club’s point of view, we are very delighted by the contribution being made by the AFL,” Mr Pellizzari said. “This funding supplements money needed

for the project, and we are currently looking at other avenues for funding.” In a bid to raise further cash and help keep costs minimal, Pellizzari said the club’s committee was currently considering inviting the general public to contribute to the project. “Our key consideration for the committee is offering the public the chance to buy pavers, which would be engraved with their name as a show of thanks for their support for the project,” he said.

Mr Pellizzari said the architect sourced by the club had measured up the existing facilities, taken on board club suggestions and would hopefully bring a final draft plan to the table soon, with the process of finalising the scope and mapping out the project work program hoped to be completed by the end of July. As there are no football or netball finals being held at the ground this year, the club hopes to start work on the project as early as September 1.

Two Wells Primary School (TWPS) and Two Wells Community Children’s Centre (TWCCC) had an audience with South Australian Minister for Education and Child Development, Grace Portolesi, when she visited the area on Tuesday, June 26. Ms Portolesi toured both the school and the centre at the invitation of Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, and spoke with leaders about future plans for each facility, listened to concerns and

to supporting projects within the town, especially the redevelopment of the football club; she is a member of the local RSL and had purchased land in the area. “It just means I will have to communicate with Stephen Griffiths more and work in a bipartisan manner with him,” she said. “I will support my communities wherever they are (and) I’ll still keep coming and supporting people in Two Wells. “I’m not going to walk away now. I just can’t.” The proposed electoral boundary changes would also see Mrs Vlahos lose some of the Elizabeth South, Angle Vale and Andrews Farm areas but pick up the St Kilda area. •LEESA – “making a difference” – page 10.

TWPS principal, Cherie Collings, said she spoke to the minister about a range of topics, including the need for more car parking (see story page 5) and for a pubic high school in the area, and discussed the predicted growth of the district. “The minister congratulated staff and students on our pleasing progress in maths, grammar and spelling,” Mrs Collings said. “She was interested to

hear about our whole school maths program “Big Ideas in Number”, and commented very positively about the appearance of school facilities, our garden project and the new playground.” TWCCC acting director, Narelle Palmer, said the visit was a great opportunity for the centre to share with the Minister and Mrs Vlahos, its strengths and concerns and was also a chance to highlight the centre’s plans for the future.

Consultation on the District Council of Mallala’s proposed new dog bylaws has now closed, with only one submission in favour of the changes, received. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said council would hopefully adopt the new bylaw at its full council meeting next month. The new bylaw will see dog owners within townships of the council area restricted to three dogs per property, with homes in the Rural Living Zone (One and Two) also limited to three dogs. People living in the Rural Living (Animal Husbandry) Zone are permitted to have up to nine dogs. Any property not in one of these zones, or in a town, may have up to five dogs. Once council has adopted the bylaw, Mr Mansueto said it would be presented to the Legislative Council for endorsement and following this, would come into effect four months after being gazetted by the council.

Questions over council spending priorities At the Mallala District Council meeting recently, where the public could put forward submissions for the 2012-13 budget, I made a request on behalf of a group of us who have volunteered to give up our time and effort to create a native bush garden behind the Lewiston playground as a pleasant sitting and strolling area for visitors. I requested a contribution from council to put towards some plants for this area. There had been a promise of a small amount of funding from council last year but that had fallen by the wayside so we had to go and “beg”, as that’s what it feels like, to hopefully have it put back in the budget for this year. We have now learnt this effort was fruitless as it appears we have been treated with contempt by the majority of councillors and our request knocked back. To have to plead in this way is soul destroying and we know we are not the only ones in this district who feel the same way. There are a lot of community-spirited folk in this council area who spend countless hours making, baking and selling to raise money for their local community projects,

yet they get turned down time and time again when they ask council for a small amount of funding to help. What makes it all the more galling is the fact council has no problem in budgeting money towards a “study” on relocating their offices from Mallala to Two Wells at a cost of $100k, a Lewiston Master Plan – presumably another “study” – at a cost

LETTER TO THE EDITOR of $50k, an Open Space Strategy – would that be yet another “study” – at $30k and, because they couldn’t get the Rates Review right the first time, another $30k for the whole process to begin again. Also, we mustn’t forget the $16k for “Team Building”, which is on the whim of one of the new councillors. Generally “studies” line the pockets of outside interests who disappear off into the far blue yonder when their job is done. We were told at this meeting council’s proposed spending over the next few years

is going to rise substantially with ever increasing investment in the Two Wells sub-division and now, after reading Michael Picard’s excellent submission, outlined in the June 20 Plains Producer, council may well incur significant extra costs to protect this from possible future flooding, so no doubt our rates will be going up in ever increasing leaps and bounds to contend with all of this. So, why is it necessary to waste money on these studies at this particular moment in time when so much else is needed. For example, sealing of some streets in Dublin and Lewiston. Some residents have put in a petition to ask for their road to be sealed, plus there are many other areas where a contribution would be so helpful for many community projects. One of our councillors had the “audacity” to ask the same questions and has now been frogmarched off to the Ombudsman by the Mayor. The Adelaide Plains Male Voice Choir is staging a choral concert in support of Christian Pastoral Support Workers (CPSW) who are based at two local Adelaide Plains’ schools. The concert, to be held on Sunday July 22 at 2pm in Two Wells Uniting Church Hall,

will also feature guest artists, including two local brothers, Gerald and Len Pederick, who will perform a musical item. Local Anglican priest, Reverend Barbara Bonifant, said the program offered by the CPSW at Two Wells Primary School and Mallala Primary School was important and

the choral concert aspired to raise enough funds to see it continue next year, and hopefully beyond. “To have a Christian program in schools is amazing,” Barbara said. “But they’re not there to try to convert kids. “They add real value to the school envi-

‘Cuppa’ came twice at Two Wells’ big tea Two Wells Uniting Church raised more than $1000 for the Cancer Council at this year’s annual Biggest Morning Tea event. Originally scheduled for June 1, the event had to be cancelled due to rain and wintry weather, but TWUC’s Pam Duncan said a trading table held under the verandah of the IGA on that initial day was very successful, raising $344 on its own. With better weather on Friday June 8, the group tried again, staging another trading table as well as a sausage sizzle, pancakes and Devonshire tea. Raffle tickets and Biggest Morning Tea mugs were also sold and helped contribute to the wonderful $1147.60 raised.

“It was a fantastic morning and we had a lot of people calling in,” Pam said. “The weather was perfect, and with the helpers from the Two Wells Uniting Church, it was a fantastic time to raise money for the Cancer Council.” Prizes for the raffle were kindly donated by Gloria Jeans, Arndale, Two Wells businesses, including the IGA, butcher, chemist, snack bar, R&J Hardware, Two Wells Hardware, Grand Champion Pet Supplies, vet, fodder store, and the Uniting Church Fellowship. I recently attended a walk and talk organised through the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Natural Resource Management Board (AMLNRMB) and the Natural Resource Centre (NRC). This was an opportunity to see some of the revegetation work being carried out within the Gawler River corridor. This project has involved the Natural Resource Management Board, Gawler River Riparian Restoration (GRRR), Australian Conservation Volunteers, Gawler Council, Light Council, Green Jobs Corps and students from Trinity College and members of the Food Forest team. The project targets removal of many introduced pest plants, which when given the right conditions take over and exclude native vegetation. When this happens the food and shelter our native fauna depend on are reduced. The aforementioned groups have been successfully planting native plants species endemic of a riparian ecosystem. We were also invited to walk through the Food Forest, which is quite a unique place nestled adjacent to the Gawler River at Hillier. The owners are driven by a passion to demonstrate permaculturefarming practices, and they are more than willing to share their knowledge and skill, with many

Scout and about for 80 years!

Two Wells Scout Group celebrated its 80th birthday last month, with about 75 members, past and present, enjoying a wonderful evening of reminiscing at the Two Wells Community Centre on June 16. Despite two recesses during the past eight decades – one forced by war – the group has worked hard to maintain a presence in the community and offers fun, outdoor-related activities for boys and girls of all ages. Two Wells Scout Group leader, Ian Laughton, said the night was a great opportunity to reflect on the group’s past and to highlight the diversity of its activities in the current times. “We had a terrific time and everyone really enjoyed themselves,” Ian said. “Hearing the yarns from the past was great and the highlight was the opportunity for past members to meet again and catch up. “It was a great exercise for the group to cement the past with the present and the future.” Former Scout leader and Two Wells resident, Brenton Applebee, who started with the group as a cub scout when he was around eight years of age, thoroughly enjoyed the night, saying it was terrific to catch up with people he had not seen in a while. “It was a good opportunity to see where we’ve been over the last 80 years and to see where Scouting is going,” Brenton added. “It’s good to see that we’re still using some of the old equipment that have been around for a long time, like the camp stoves. “I think the kids learn a lot of practical skills and how to work as a team through Scouting.” Two Wells Scout Group is now focused on fundraising to send some of its members to the 2013 Jamboree in Queensland.

Transport services win Persistence has paid off for local MP, Leesa Vlahos, with new public transport services for the town of Virginia and neighbouring Penfield set to begin Monday, July 2. The services will connect the township with regular train services at the Elizabeth Interchange (via Penfield) to allow residents easy access into the Adelaide CBD or north towards Gawler. The new 407 route will also include a stop on Supple Road to specifically cater for the residents of the Palms Lifestyle Village and

The announcement of the new service by Minister for Transport Services, Chloe Fox, comes on the back of Mrs Vlahos’ recently presenting the results of her public transport survey to the minister. “These new services are proof of the value of communication between the people and their government,” Mrs Vlahos said.

“The residents in Virginia and the Palms have spoken, and the State Labor government has listened and acted. “I would like to thank Minister Fox for allowing me to present the concerns and questions of my community, and for her quick actions to address the issues that were raised.” Mrs Vlahos said the results of the survey showed a very enthusiastic response from the community, especially from the residents of the Palms Lifestyle Village, with over 40 per cent of returned surveys from Virginia and

Resident responses to survey proved need

In a bid to canvas the public transport needs and opinions of those who live along the Port Wakefield Road corridor, more than 2,800 surveys were sent to residents in March – and the results are in. Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, instigated the survey after continued feedback from constituents about the lack of public transport in the north. As well as the posted survey, Mrs Vlahos held “listening posts” in Two Wells and Virginia, and was pleased with how many people took the time to complete the survey. She recently presented Minister for Transport Services, Chloe Fox, with the results. “There has been an incredibly enthusiastic response with more than 16 per cent of surveys returned to my office,” Mrs Vlahos said. “This is a very large response rate for a posted community survey. “Well over a quarter of the

LEESA Vlahos residents from the Village (Palms Residential Village, Virginia), returned the survey, making a significant contribution to response rate and ensuring that their voices are heard.” Of the 469 surveys returned, 150 were from Two Wells, with the 50-59 year-old age bracket returning the most number of surveys, followed closely by the 60-69 year-old age group. More than two-thirds of

survey respondents said they would use public transport, if it was available, during the week at morning, then afternoon, peak travel times, with the Adelaide CBD and then Elizabeth being the top picks of destination. “More than 50 constituents manually added Munno Para to the answers, indicating a need for short distance/local travel to Munno Para Shopping Centre,” Mrs Vlahos noted. Of the reasons given as to why residents did not use public transport the top response was “public transport not available” and then “route locations”. Most respondents said they would use public transport for shopping and grocery purposes (287) followed by medical and doctor appointments (214), work or employment (158) and then education (116). One hundred and ten respondents (23.4%) also indicated they had children who required or would use public transport to get

to school, while 13% chose to declare a permanent or temporary disability that prevented them from transporting themselves. “This question was included to gauge the reliance by some members of the community on relatives to assist with transport, and therefore examine the value of prospective public transport to these residents,” Mrs Vlahos explained. At the end of May, Mrs Vlahos sent residents a letter thanking them for their participation in the survey and reaffirmed her commitment to gaining public transport in the north. In the letter she stated, “I would like to thank you for returning your public transport survey. “You have contributed to the first step in improving transport services in our area. “Improved public transport services don’t arrive over night. “I will continue to lobby for better services in t Parliament.”

Lewiston resident Nancy Stroop has organised a craft market this month in Two Wells and hopes to see it become a regular event.

Market delight here soon If you are into craft and anything homemade, including jewellery, gifts and food, then Two Wells’ first Designs and Delights Market is the place to head on Saturday July 21 at the Community Centre. Lewiston resident, Nancy Stroop, has spent months putting the market stallholders together and came up with the idea after attending other markets around the state. “I could see it was much needed in the area,” Nancy said. “With space for 31 indoor stalls of various sizes, there will be something for everyone, including handmade clothing, toys, jewellery, Two Wells Echo, July 2012

gifts, food, homewares and more.” Although predominantly a handmade market, some stalls will have top brand name items, with all items at the market new, nothing pre-loved, Nancy said. Two Wells Scout Group will feed market goers with a sausage sizzle, drinks and more. Part proceeds from the day, Nancy highlighted, will go to “Help Save the Furry Ones Animal Rescue and Adoption Shelter”; a registered charity located in Ingle Farm. “They will also have donation bins for canned and dry food for

the kitties at the shelter,” she said. “The shelter does not receive any government funding and is always in need of donations of food, etc. For the kids there will be lucky dips and a “Kids Zone” with colouring in, and face painting. The first market is at Two Wells Community Centre on Saturday, July 21, from 9.30am to 2.30pm. EFTPOS is available. “I am looking forward to showcasing some very talented stallholders,” Nancy said. Other market dates are: September 15; Ocotber 27;November 10 and December 8.

Big effort planting trees

As a consequence to my last column the Year 7 tree and bush planting has taken place at Gawler High School. Year 7 students from within and outside the district were bussed to Gawler High over a period of several days to enjoy their tree planting experience. It was all action, with Year 7 students, high school students and staff all helping and learning from each other. Eight hundred trees were planted. The students were so enthusiastic and energetic that it looked, at one time, that we might run out of trees. Unfortunately all of the snakes and lizards are snoozing for the winter so they weren’t spotted but the students did enjoy watching the ducks and other bird life; ibises, herons and galahs (eolophus roseicapillus). Of course all that exercise planting trees gave people the munchies, so after planting students sat on logs enjoying their lunch. I hope there is enough room on the wetlands for another planting next year. Council currently is considering the long-term development of the Lewiston Wetlands. Residents can still input into this plan by contacting any of the councilors or the council direct. It is important we develop a long-sighted plan for these spaces for the enjoyment of generations of Lewistonites to come.

ust over two years ago busy mother of two, Leesa Vlahos, was voted in as Member of Parliament for the electorate of Taylor. Leesa took over the Labor seat in March 2010 after previous MP, Tricia White, retired, and set about making herself known to the diverse constituents in the 550-squarekilometre electorate. It is a job she finds interesting and fascinating – and one she feels privileged to hold. After months of visiting and talking to residents, hours collecting data and writing letters, as well as taking the opportunity to voice concerns and issues for the north in Parliament, Leesa says she is beginning to see some of her aspirations come to life. But it hasn’t come overnight and not without a lot of hard work. “I tried in that first six months to listen to people and meet as many people as possible and get to know as many different community groups as I could,” Leesa explained. “I feel I’m doing things that are important and I am making a difference – and I’m just starting to see some of the things I identified starting to make inroads.” Some of the things Leesa has prioritised for the electorate include: 1. Improved transport 2. A public high school 3. Greater health options’ 4. Planned sport and recreational facilities around community hubs 5. Open space in council areas Through her talks with the many communities in Taylor, Leesa says she has seen and heard, and in some cases experienced first hand, the importance of these issues to residents. Each community has its own identity and she says it is important for her to respect and appreciate all communities and help them in whatever way she can to help things come to fruition.

IF LEESA had a ‘pot of gold’ she woulD:

1 – Improve public transport up Port Wakefield Road carriageway, including Two Wells and Virginia, linking into Buckland Park and the Palms and connecting with Gawler, Elizabeth and Salisbury. 2 – Build an R-12 public school. 3 – Create bigger kindergartens. 4 – Create planned community sports hubs and recreational facilities. 5 – Improve roads. 6 – Establish successful businesses, including “smart” agriculture “I want them to know I do care about what they are doing with their community club,” Leesa said. “Whatever I’m doing it’s about them. They make the communities work. They’re the glue and I think they need support.” One of Leesa’s focuses is public transport, specifically the need for public transport in the north to connect with existing metro services at Gawler, Mawson Lakes and Elizabeth. She says structured planning for transport, especially around schools that haven’t yet been built, is vital if the region is to grow and prosper. So too is the need for improved health options for residents, with Leesa suggesting the area could benefit by co-locating some services in a GP Plus-type service centre.

With her background of working in the health industry, and having studied health planning at university, she feels now is the time to start preparing for expected growth. Another priority is ensuring local communities have enough passive and structured sports and recreational facilities, a trend she says many communities are embracing. “I know sport is a really important way of keeping communities healthy and active, and families healthy and active, because they tend to do it together,” Leesa said. “The trend is to build sport and recreational facilities around community hubs, like the Two Wells oval complex, so everyone shares common infrastructure and gets bang for buck. “(So), are we best having a

community heart we all share and maintain and have a vested interest in, rather than having five little clubs struggling and eventually close once one (supportive) family gives up the ghost, it collapses?” Linking in with her focus on community sports hubs, Leesa aims to maintain and improve open space areas. She says this might be as simple as families being able to locate swings and slides at the end of the street or improved walking and bike paths. Sometimes Leesa says she has a “light bulb” moment about a particular community, when a good idea will come to her when she’s least expecting it. Throughout her office she has little yellow post-it notes with goals she’d like to achieve for many of the communities. But results are never instant and it is the journey of working towards those goals that makes up her days and sees her working endless hours. “Sometimes things are slower to happen than what I want and that’s probably the frustrating thing about being in parliament or government,” Leesa explained. “There’s never enough money for everyone, there’s competing interests of where funds go – but I want to fight for our communities.” Every parliamentary sitting week, Leesa tries to secure a fiveminute “grievance” spot in front of the ministers where she aims to bring northern residents’ concerns and issues to the attention of “the powers that be”. “Because we haven’t been seen as a marginal seat, where people threw buckets of money at it to try to secure votes, we have to work hard to draw attention,” she explained. “If they make a decision (in parliament) and they don’t think about it from a northern perspective I get

my ‘flag’ and run it up the pole and say ‘oi, about us, we’re here, don’t forget us’. “We’re not going to be the quiet kid in the corner, we want our fair share. It’s fighting for the north and fighting for our fair share of the growth because a lot of people have put in a lot of faith.” Unlike many of her counterparts, Leesa says she also likes to use grievance time in Parliament as an opportunity to showcase the positives of the people in the north as well as highlight any data she may have collected. Most recently, although not in grievance time, she presented results from her public transport survey to Minister for Transport Services, Chloe Fox, and says while showing emotion and the effect parliamentary decisions have at a community level is important, having fact-based data to back up her claims is even more important. “Being methodical does pay off,” she said. “I’m a great believer in that sort of thing, that’s why we did the transport survey so it wasn’t just an emotive issue it was fact based.” Overall Leesa admits some of the things on her “to do list” may take time, but she plans to stick around for a while – if the residents of Taylor agree of course. “They (my goals) are big planning things and they’re not necessarily things that will be on the ground before the next election but I’m working towards that,” she explained. “Working in Taylor is an absolute privilege and it’s something I love doing. “I’m here (elected) for four years and I’ll work hard and hopefully people think I’m doing a good enough job (and) if I get to see the kids who started in reception finish Year 12, I think that will be a remarkable privilege.

Laura sticks with hockey

For fifteen-year-old Trinity College student Laura Kingsmill, hockey is everything – she lives and breathes it and is a dedicated member of a variety of squads. And her efforts have paid off, with the teenager, who lives at Korunye, recently selected to play for Australia in the national Under 16 School Girls Hockey team in Brisbane from July 10 – 13. Laura first picked up a hockey stick when she was five years old, following in her parents, Matthew and Carolyn’s, footsteps – both played for Two Wells Hockey Club for many years. “I’m looking forward to wearing the green and gold,” Laura said. “Hockey is what I’ve always known, I love everything about it.” Laura plays defence and in the mid-field, but enjoys playing wherever she is on the field. This year is also the second year Laura has been selected in the South Australian Under 16 School Girls Hockey team, which will see her fly to Hobart in August to take part in the Under 16 School Girls hockey competition. Later this month Laura will also compete as a member of the South Australian State Country Women’s Team, and will head to Bendigo, where

she will be up against players who are more than five years older. Sometimes I find it better than playing with girls my own age,” she said. “They approach the game the same but it’s not just a game to them. They enjoy playing

Two Wells CFS is a vibrant, well organised, well run and a very efficient group of locals who on occasion put their lives on the line in order to assist their community. Two Wells CFS is more than just a bushfire brigade! This brigade, under the captaincy of Adam Harris, deserves respect for what they do for the community of Two Wells. The brigade responds to an average of 180 calls per year ranging from scrub fires, car fires, bushfires, road accidents, structure fires, alarm calls to major industry, hazard materials spills and a whole raft of responses to assist other brigades in other groups, in other regions and in other states. The Two Wells community has, even if it does not realise it, relied on a small group of exceptional men and women to provide protection for your town and for your community. It is now time to say thank you! As Region 2 Commander into which Two Wells falls, I say a big thank you to the Two Wells brigade members for your dedication, selfless commitment to assisting your community as UNPAID professional fire-fighters whose skills are the equal of any other fire-fighter in the state. Two Wells people should also say thank you to the Two Wells CFS for its continued dedication and protection of your community. What if volunteer fire-fighters didn’t volunteer – can we really afford the alternative? Two Wells saddles up for new cross country course For many people owning a horse and riding it at their leisure is enough, but for those who are seeking a friendly horse environment, with a focus on horse and rider education, fun, competing in local horse events and strengthening the relationship between horse and rider, the Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club might be the place to go. TWE&PC began as the Two Wells and Districts Equestrian Club in 1979, and was first situated at Boolaman Minga, near where the Two Wells golf course is now. The Williams family made this land available, and rallies were held fortnightly on Sunday afternoons. In 1983 the club approached the District Council of Mallala seeking alternative grounds as winter rallies were difficult due to the low-lying land. A small parcel of land near the Two Wells rubbish dump was offered by the DCM and was used by the club until 1986, when permanent grounds became available at its current site onAunger Road, Lewiston. The following year clubrooms were erected. In 1985 the club joined the South Australian Pony Club Association and that same year changed its name to reflect its new incorporation. The club uniform consists of cream jodhpurs, white shirt, red tie and red jumper, with the club’s emblem of two wells and a horseshoe adopted in 1986. In 1986 Malcolm Goss donated use of land on Oliver Road, Lewiston, to the club for the purpose of building a cross-country course. A successful annual one-day event (ODE) was held at the club for many years but more recently the land became unavailable and the club had to forgo this exhilarating event. Current club president, Pentti Puro – who was the inaugural president – says TWE&PC hopes to stage an open ODE on its new course next year, with the facility catering for five grades as well as Equestrian Australia classes. Pentti is an active member of the club and enjoys helping out with the younger members, especially his grandchildren, who are taking the reins from as young as two years old.

Pentti says the club is very family-friendly and has membership from many areas of the Adelaide Plains. Due to the size of TWE&PC’s current grounds and its insurance requirements, the club caps membership numbers at 50, with there currently being a waiting list of people wishing to join. “It’s a fairly competitive club,” Pentti said. “Our members do a lot of competitive things, all sort of things too, not just dressage and jumping.” Some of the other activities the

club has been involved in include trail riding, tent pegging, polo cross, mounted games, endurance rides, beach rides, orienteering, eventing, showing jumping and hacking. Many of the members are working towards APC (Australian Pony Club) certificates, which verify riding ability, horse skills and knowledge. The club is a highly rated and competitive club, with well-known and experienced instructors regularly holding training days at the venue. DP Boyz take out basketball final The Two Rivers Basketball Association witnessed two great grand finals on Monday June 25, marking the end of a very busy autumn. The Rockets, a disciplined and well-drilled team, mesmerized with their quick ball movement and team play, taking the game right up to their opponents, the DP Boyz. However, the DP Boyz settled down to play better basketball in the second half and their height proved decisive in the end, winning 41 – 32. In the other grand final, the overall experience and depth of the Wildcats saw them overcome HIDA, who only came together as a team this season, the final score 48 – 41. Off the court, the Association has been busy revamping management. A new constitution was accepted at a special meeting and a management committee elected. The new committee is: chairperson – Paul Schmelzkopf, vice chairperson – Anthony Sutton, secretary – Theresa Woolatt, treasurer – Melina Lubcke or Verity Schmelzkopf (tbc), development officer – Tony Moore and committee members – Eileen Pethic and Tina Jackson.

The Association was privileged to have Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos attend a match night earlier in the season to award Hoops4Life trophies to Sunday Lual and Taran Deeble, for the 2011 Spring Season. Mrs Vlahos then chose to talk about the program and the positive outcomes it produces for disadvantaged youth and children, to Parliament. The Hoops4Life award recognises the player who best demonstrates a consistent positive attitude, respect for teammates and opponents, and willingness to learn and improve in both basketball and life skills. The Hoops4Life program has also been highlighted at the National Humanitarian Settlements Conference recently held inAdelaide, for its support to refugee youth. David Sutton of the Rockets won the junior trophy and voucher, and Mathew Baker of Xavier Riot won the senior trophy and voucher. Development coach, Tony Moore provided the vouchers. Soccer girls represent school

A trio of Two Wells Primary School students spent five days last month representing their school in the state SAPSASA soccer carnival held at Barratt Reserve, West Beach, from June 18-22. Year 5 students Danielle Raschella and Jenna VanHaasteren, along with Year 7 student

Talia Raschella, were selected in the Gawler and Districts girls SAPSASA soccer team, and competed against other districts from around the state, playing two games each day. Despite cold and wet weather, the girls had a great week playing soccer and enjoyed playing in a variety of positions

on the field. The girls all play soccer for Angle Vale Soccer Club, with Jenna and Danielle in the Under 11s and Talia in the Under 13s. This is the second year Talia has been chosen for SAPSASA soccer and she was thrilled, saying the game is skillful, fun and keeps her fit.

A1 side has finals in its sights THE Two Wells Netball Club’sA1 side is a relatively new team compared to last year, and we are lucky to have a bunch of considerably skillful players. It’s Trisha Beer’s first season for our club and she has been a stand out performer in GS and a great pick up for our club. Nikki Darling has returned from injury last year and is shooting superbly, also leading well at GA. Neralie Wearn and I have both returned to the centre court in A1 this year, after having babies last year. Our netball skills and experience have helped our team’s success this year. Rebecca Pym and Nicole Hardy were stand out performers on the centre court last year in A1, have continued that form this year and now have the support around them to win more games. Karen Penhall is back in the A1s this year and her strong and skillful defensive pressure has definitely helped our team win games. She has combined well with Mia Darling in defence, who played her first season in A1 last year. Mia has improved even further this year, being best on court a few weeks for taking many rebounds and intercepts for the team. We have all now started to combine really well as a team and have had a good start to the season. Two Wells Echo, July 2012

Currently we sit in third place (as of June 27), and we have come close to defeating the top two teams, even leading in certain stages of the games. Our side believes it has the ability to beat either team the next time we meet. We hope to defeat these teams in the coming weeks to try and gain either top or second spot on the premiership ladder, and were are excited to see what the rest of the season has to bring - we can’t wait for finals! It’s also great to see all our other netball teams performing well this year, and it looks like we will all be in the finals come September. Our A2 side in particular has begun performing at their best at the right end of the season. Thanks to the A2s for supporting the A1 side and sitting on our bench - these girls are good enough to come up and play if we need them. Thanks also toA1 team manager, Briony Thompson, who has provided awesome support to our team during games. Her netball experience has been so valuable to our team. Good luck to all of our football and netball teams!

Two Wells girls crowned state champs Two Wells Primary School’s girls’ rugby team was crowned regional champions at the recent SAPSASA State Rugby League Tackle Championships held at Spruance Reserve, Elizabeth East. On Friday June 1, one boys’ team and one girls’ team competed in the championships with all students from both teams to be congratulated on their efforts, their team work and their great displays of sportsmanship - it certainly was a very exciting day! A special thank you to all the parents for their support. The boys played four matches in the minor round for two wins and two losses. They won their first final in the Plate Division to play off against Burc College. The game was an absolute nailbiter, with the boys showing great strength despite losing 12-16 in a very tough match. The girls played six games in

By TWPS teacher, Sharyn Binyon the minor round for one draw and five wins. They won their first final to compete in the championship final against Swallowcliffe Primary School. After having a good lead, Swallowcliffe clawed their way back into the game. Through pure strength, team work and determination the girls held on and won 16-12 to become the regional champions. The girls will now be competing in the State Championships on Wednesday the 27th June. Members of the boys’ team included Josh May, Josh Hart, Michael McFarlane, David Oakley, Luke Barnett, Oliver Hill, Ryley Cummings, Alex Bouwer, Dakota Collins-Daly, Adam Van Zoelen, Cory Tryfopoulos, Sean Hammond, Bradley Poynter and Sam Brander.

Members of the girls’ team included Charlotte Rawle, Amber Phillips-Gaudron, Holly Bates, Laura Oakley, Tahlia Raschella, Kaitlyn Harrison, Jade Murphy, Grace Slattery, Carmel Edwards, Rebecca Edwards and Rosie Edwards. On Wednesday, June 27, the rugby girls competed in the State Championships at Henley Primary School and faced very strong teams from districts across the state. After finishing third in their pool, the girls were placed into the Trophy Division. They won their semi final against Gawler East Primary to face Hackham East in the Trophy final. The final was a nail- biting game from start to finish with the girls eventually winning 28-22, making them the Trophy Division winners. The girls are to be congratulated on their determination, strength, teamwork, sportsmanship and efforts on the day. Special thanks to parents for their support.
