HICKINBOTHAM AND COUNCIL IN TALKS:
Town centre project
S
liding into school Two Wells Primary School has some new junior play equipment and it is proving a hit with students. At the end of last term the new playground, consisting of a raised ramp, tunnel and slide was installed at a cost of about $28,000 and is aimed at junior primary students. • Pictured on the new slide, top to bottom, are Reception students Brianna Slattery, Leah Stringer, Jayden Hernen, Liam Baldock, Riley Baldock, Max Meier, James Pastuch, Tarique Jackson, Hayley Walton and Elisabeth Rowe. Housing developer Hickinbotham has established a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the District Council of Mallala in relation to the Two Wells Town Centre Development. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said representatives from Hickinbotham approached council confidentially earlier in the year to discuss being involved with the project. “Hickinbotham is interested in developing a small part of the town centre,” Mr Mansueto said. “Council had previously been briefed in confidence about their proposal, which has resulted in a draft MOU.” Mr Mansueto said the MOU outlined three key principles in relation to the town centre development. n SEE PAGE 5
‘Cooken’ up some fun Dublin resident Anne-Marie Paech has come up with a novel way to raise funds for her local Scout group. Anne-Marie is a Ventura leader for Two Wells Scout Group, and has established group cooking classes to help send local members to the 2013 Jamboree in Queensland. Her “Cooken Stuff” classes are tailormade for people of all ages and cooking abilities and will see participants get
hands-on experience using top-of-therange cooking equipment. “I have a passion for cooking, I love food and I want to share that with other people,” Anne-Marie said. “And it’s also a way to offer people the chance to learn cooking skills and see how easy cooking can be.” Classes generally run for four hours and cost $20 per head, with $15 going directly to the Scouts and the rest covering food costs.
On the menu is everything and anything, from desserts to finger foods to party food. Anne-Marie caters for everything, so you won’t have to bring a thing – except an appetite. Bookings are essential, contact Anne-Marie Paech on 0408 895 170. n Anne-Marie Paech with Amy Paech and Ebony Green as part of the Scouts cake stall at the recent market.

Middle Beach Boat Owners and Progress Club vicepresident and local Elizabeth shack owner, John Drexel, is pushing for the installation of four-knot speed signs in the channel Middle Beach residents are pushing for new four-knot speed signs to be erected in Salt Creek after increased use of the channel and its linked lagoon has seen dangerous speeds by high-powered watercraft. Middle Beach Boat Owners and Progress Club vice-president and local shack owner, John Drexel, said more watercraft were entering the channel and lagoon at Middle Beach following the opening of the new ramp in September 2010, and many were not adhering to safe speeds. Currently there are no signs in the creek as watercraft enters from Gulf St Vincent, and the only sign at the boat ramp reminding people of the four-knot speed limit, has been stolen. “This is the main beach for many residents of the northern Adelaide Plains and Barossa Valley,” Mr Drexel said. “The lagoon and creek have been used
by family groups for years for swimming, canoeing, fishing and wading and with the proposed housing developments at Two Wells and Buckland Park there will be more and more people coming here. “This is going to be their local beach and we’ve got to make sure it’s safe for people.” Mr Drexel said the process of installing the speed signs was a difficult and lengthy one but after a unanimous vote from members of the Middle Beach Boat Owners and Progress Club, it was now in motion. Through the Mallala Foreshore Advisory Committee and with support from District Council of Mallala and the South Australian Recreational Boating Council (SARBC), the installation of the signs is being pursued through the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI). It is proposed the signs will be erected about 300 metres seaward of the boat ramp,
on either side of the creek on the outer edge of the lagoon. This, Mr Drexel said, would still allow watercraft to get up on the plane well before attempting to cross the sandbar at the mouth of Salt Creek. Mr Drexel is pushing for the signs to be installed before this summer. “We don’t want high speed boats in this area,” he said. “We need the four knot speed signs to increase the safety for the users of the lagoon and it would be nice to have them in before the summer season, before people start going out on the water with their kids.” DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said he understood the cost of the installation and maintenance of the signs would be funded by the state government. Council is seeking feedback. Contact DCM CEO, Charles Mansueto, on 85270200 to comment or for further information.
‘Hart’- felt respect in naming hall A special service was held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Two Wells, on Sunday July 8, to bless the newly-named Hart Memorial Hall. The hall at the rear of the church was named as a tribute to the late Esther and Reg Hart for their lifelong service to the church from the 1930s to 2001. The service was officiated by Reverend Barbara Bonifant, and Esther and Reg’s children, Diane Meaney and Peter Hart, along with their extended families. Audrey Hart (whose late husband, Claire, was also involved with the church in those early years) and regular parishioners, celebrated the occasion by joining hands and ‘hugging’the hall – an old English tradition. Diane spoke of her parents’ deep involvement with the church since the early 1930s, when her father, Reg, was envelope secretary and then church warden. He went on to spend the war years in Darwin in the RAAF. After the end of the war, Reg once again became involved in the church, with his new bride Esther at his side, and they both continued to work tirelessly for the next 50 plus years as church wardens, secretary
and general caretakers of the building and grounds. The church hall was first moved to its present site in 1992. Local parishioners, Colin and Tilly Breed volunteered countless hours of fund raising and renovated the hall in gratitude for kindnesses shown to them by Esther. Later in that year it was named the Esther Hart Sunday School. Recently the hall was given a face-lift by Hart descendants, Diane and Peter; a new sign and memorial plaque was erected to record and forever honour the efforts of Esther and Reg Hart, who were two respected people in the community.

Hubby says to Wifey, you want me to take the jeep – do you think that’s wise, it might not fit depending on the size. But a new fridge would look swish, I’m ringing Balaklava Transport to carry this. Local talent comes to life Bec O’Brien reports: Artists of all mediums, styles and subject matter were celebrated on August 1, with the launch of the District Council of Mallala’s Living Talent-Living Local exhibition. DCM mayor, Marcus Strudwicke, opened the event at the Two Wells Public Library, saying the exhibition was part of the South Australia Living Arts (SALA) Festival, which runs from August 3 – 26, and was free to enter. “The SALA festival is a truly unique statewide celebration of the visual arts,” Mr Strudwicke told the gathering. “We are pleased and privileged to have nine local artists displaying work in our exhibition.” Artists displaying their work included Peter Thompson, Don Morcom, Eric Williams, Ellen Steyn, Judith Verner, Tania Gilbert, Carrie Flamank, Susan Pearce, and Pat Thompson. The artists used many different mediums, including water colours, acrylic paint, pencil, chalk and textiles to create a range of colourful, detailed, interesting, intricate and inspiring artworks. Lewiston artist Ellen Steyn, had a number of items in the exhibition and said it was terrific to see the work of local artists being encouraged and admired. Ellen uses acrylic paints to depict mainly horses and animals and has been working in the industry for decades, having taught at the Minlaton Gallery and at schools around the state. “I’ve been doing art since I was a child and could pick up a pencil,” she said. Some of the artwork displayed as part of the exhibition is for sale. Drop into the Two Wells Public Library, DCM’s offices in Two Wells and Mallala, and the Mallala Library to view these wonderful artworks. The exhibition will also be on display on the DCM website www.mallala.sa.gov.au under the Events page.

I have come across many people within our community and council who are dedicated to building on to our environmental assets. In last month’s Echoletters to the editor, I read, with great disappointment, of one group which is trying to revegetate an area within the new Lewiston playground. This group has spent many hours in preparation for planting of this area, only to be told by our council there are no funds available for this year. When community groups want to get involved in their community I believe any council should do their best to encourage community capacity outcomes. Mark Webb

ARTIST’S impression of the Two Wells main street concept plan.
Town centre appeals to developer Hickinbotham proposal for Two Wells main street
Bec O’Brien reports: Housing developer Hickinbotham has established a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the District Council of Mallala in relation to the Two Wells Town Centre Development. These are: 1– Any access to crown land is
by DCM 2 – Any development that occurs is in line with the main street guidelines 3 – The existing town centre remains as a focus of retail and community ser-
vices within the district. These principles, Mr Mansueto said, were aligned with what the council had received in community feedback about the project. “There’s a demand already from the existing community for additional services in the community,” he said. “The town project is not linked directly
(with the Hickinbotham development) but they are working in parallel.” Hickinbotham Group managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, said the company supported DCM’s plans for the revitalisation of the Two Wells main street and town centre, and was committed to working with council. “Council and the community have made it clear the main street is the ‘beating heart’ of Two Wells,” Mr Hickinbotham said. “We support the council and the community’s plans to retain and grow the main street and town centre as the primary place for retail, community services and facilities. “Hickinbotham’s proposed residential development, north of the existing town centre, will help grow the Two Wells’ community.
two wells link – HAVE YOU SEEN AJAX AND STAMP?
Psychic claims missing dogs in our area An Adelaide psychic has suggested two small dogs, missing for the past 12 months, could be in the Two Wells area. Salisbury North resident, Sandra Field, has spent $6,000 and countless hours searching for her nine-year-old Jack Russell cross Tenterfield dogs, Ajax and Stamp, and has widened her search to include Two Wells after a posting by Semaphore-based psychic, clairvoyant and medium, Darrell Whitfield, on her Facebook page in early June. The white and tan, desexed and micro chipped males went missing from Sandra’s mothers’ home on July 19 last year and despite her continued efforts have not been seen since. Sandra believes her beloved “fur-babies” have been the victim of dog napping and says she has suffered enormous grief over their disappearance. “Dog napping is a real problem,” Sandra said. “It’s causing a lot of distress and trauma (and) these two dogs, I’m incredibly bonded with. “I went through this horrendous time searching, putting up notices Two Wells Echo, August, 2012
and looking for them but nothing, I haven’t seen them since.” Initially Sandra concentrated the search to her local area but after a witness claimed to have seen a man stop, open his car door and call the dogs in, she has widened her search. For the past 12 months Sandra has placed fortnightly advertisements in the Advertiser, she has been on the ABC’s Stateline program pleading for information about her dogs and has even set up a Facebook page, which has about 600 followers. It was here psychic, Darrell Whitfield, posted this message: “I actually feel they are around other dogs at the moment and that they are alright. I don’t know if you have checked to the north like Two Wells area along the railway line. I also think they are at someone’s place and it has quite a lot of room to run around so it could be a farm or an area with acreage. I really hope you find these lovely dogs.” Sandra has also hired a Sydneybased pet search company and is offering a $2500 reward. “When I lost my husband I clung to the dogs and now someone has

– Sandra Field, owner of Ajax and Stamp. picked them up,” Sandra said. “It just makes me feel hopeless and I’m powerless to do anything about it. “That’s why I keep on this campaign to find them or to find out what happened to them. We were like a little family.” Despite sightings of dogs that are similar and emails and phone calls of support from strangers, Sandra is still no closer to finding her beloved pets. She says through the Lost Dogs of Adelaide Facebook page she has seen many instances of people being reunited with their pets and is hoping someday soon she will be among them. “A lot of dogs do get back, so there are people out there doing the right thing,” Sandra said. “They are going out of their way to get these pets back to their families and they are stopping people going through the trauma that I’m going through.” If you have seen these dogs or have information that could help Sandra, contact Petsearch on 1300 309 004 or visit www.facebook. com/AjaxandStamp.
“We want the town’s main street to prosper and thrive. “The proposed residential development has been master-planned to integrate with the existing township, and a vibrant town centre is key to achieving this.” Mr Hickinbotham said the company welcomed the opportunity to work with council to identify how it could contribute to the main street project and the proposed MOU was a reflection of this commitment. “The proposed Memorandum of Understanding creates a framework to guide ongoing discussions between the council and Hickinbotham concerning any proposals Hickinbotham may contribute to council’s revitalisation of the town centre,” he said. The draft MOU was adopted at DCM’s full council meeting on Monday night and council will now continue discussions with Hickinbotham about their involvement in the project.

It’s a happy end to Natasha’s pony tale tinker r
After months of loving care and good food, Tinker, is pictured with her new owner and Two Wells resident, Natasha Hogan.

FOUR months ago, Tinker the Palouse Pony, was on the verge of dying from starvation and was set to be put down. But a lucky turn of events has seen her find a new home in Two Wells, where, despite being blind in one eye, she is now thriving. Local resident, Natasha Hogan, has been involved with horses since she was a teenager, and wanted to purchase a pony for her two young daughters. Tinker’s plight came to Natasha’s attention when she was enquiring about another pony she had seen on the Internet. After seeing pictures of Tinker and talking to her former owner (not the person who let Tinker get into this condition), Natasha

said the only thing she could do was help save the little pony. Tinker was so severely malnourished Natasha estimates she only weighed around 120 kilograms, more than 100kg underweight. “Her ribs were sticking out, there were bones everywhere. She was severely emaciated,” she said. “I wasn’t sure she was going to make it, it was like she didn’t know how to eat and had to re-learn it all again.” “She was just a shell, she was a ghost,” fiancé Raymond Black added. But after weeks of tender loving care, and with the advice of local and interstate horse people, Natasha and her family began to see Tinker come to life.
All of us can ‘scout’ wetlands
I have been fortunate to meet and work with many people within our community. There is nothing greater as a land carer to meet people enjoying and learning about our environment within our region. On my regular travels with my dog, Marley, at the Lewiston wetland trail, I came across a number of young people, who were members of Two Wells Scout Group, all feverishly drawing and writing down landmarks. The Scout group was there working towards their camp craft Scouts badge. This involved using a compass and navigation skills to produce a map of the wetland trail, so cub scouts could follow it and retrace the steps of their fellow scout members. The Lewiston Wetland Trail is 7 kilometres one way and 14kms return. I believe these trails give you a great insight into what types of plants grow within our region and there are many native bird species that depend on the food sources that these plants provide. It is also a great place to relax. It was also great to hear members from this group will also be working towards

The placid little pony now enjoys regular pats and cuddles, good food and the company of another horse. “It’s probably one of the best feelings being able to give something a second chance,” Natasha said. “Seeing the life come back into her has been so amazing. “I got teary when I first saw her and now I get teary again when I see how far she has come.” Natasha would like to thank local farrier, John Good, horse dentist, Dennis O’Leary, and Victorian-based Pony Rescues/ Secret Surrender founder, and friend, Tania Decker, who helped support the pony and guide her on what to do to give Tinker a fighting chance.
Christmas parade
OUR 2012 Christmas Parade will be here before we know it and we would love to have a parade prince and princess again. Do you remember last year’s prince and princess? We are looking for two young people who are active in the community and we would love to recognise their achievements. If you know of a young man or young lady between the ages of 10 and 15 who you would like to nominate, please send details to Bev at pacapark@twpo.com.au or write out the information and leave it addressed to Bev at Two Wells Craft Shop. Nominations close on October 31. Please ensure the parents of the young people give permission for the prince or princess to be named and photographed. Date for the parade this year is Friday December 14. Several stallholders have already signed up, two bands are booked and we have a special guest arranged. This guest will generate publicity for our town – and just who he/ she is will be revealed in a later Echo. If you would like to be involved in the largest event of the year for Two Wells, contact Bev on the above email address, leave your contact details at the Craft Shop, or phone 0418811315. New ideas for our event are very welcome.

Two Wells Scouts at Lewiston wetlands. their landcare badge within local projects to complete their tasks. Some were involved in planting days at the Lewiston wetlands as part of National Planet Ark day where our Landcare group worked with a number of schools including Two Wells Primary, Gawler Primary, Trinity Angle Vale and Pulteney Grammar, along with students from the Conservation and Land Management Program TAFESA Roseworthy campus. This involved more than a 1000 people over a 10-year period with more than 24,000 plants being planted (grasses, shrubs, aquatic plants and a few trees). When I was a child I belonged to a cub
group, as I believe many of us did at one time. They were good times of adventure with new friends. It is great to see these adventures are still happening, but we need an environment to explore and to learn about for these opportunities to continue. This is just one example of the environmental assets this region has to offer community groups. n For more details about the Two Wells, Lewiston and Districts Landcare Group phone Pat on 0419 860 981, email twowellslewistonlandcare@y7mail.com or look for them on Facebook.

THERE have been a few recent changes at Two Wells Internet, although many locals may not have noticed. The business is now under new ownership and management, after Neville Seccafien took over in July. For a long time, many locals actually thought Neville already owned the business, being the face behind the counter at the Two Wells store for the past 11 years. Two Wells Internet is no longer an internet service provider (ISP), however, all other previous services are still available. Neville can handle computer, laptop and printer servicing, repairs, sales and upgrades, home office or business packages and PC support. He also offers a call-out service to both businesses and homes when required, or over the phone support if needed. If you’re looking for a new

Name our baker!
Two Wells CFS fires up the barbie to ignite interest
Two Wells Country Fire Service has stepped up its campaign to recruit new members, with a successful community event held on Saturday July 28. Two Wells CFS brigade captain, Adam Harris, said the event had been well received by most members of the public and there was a possibility of four or five people interested in signing up. Over the last few months the brigade has been trying to drum up support from the community, with large banners put up around the town and advice from South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission’s (SAFECOM) Aaron Hughes, who has been working with the brigade to secure new members. “The reason we’re doing this is to boost the membership so that we can continue to provide a good service to the local community,” Adam said. “If we don’t get new members we’re just going to be relying on the current crews, who are getting worn out with the increased workload. “We’re hoping to gain about 10 new members from this latest drive.” At the event on Saturday members from the brigade cooked a free sausage sizzle, handed out fliers, balloons and information, and talked to people passing by. Contact Two Wells CFS brigade captain, Adam Harris, on 0413 237 036 if you are interested in attending, or drop into the station from 7.30pm next Monday, August 13.
HAVE you noticed the new friendly face greeting customers at the front of Two Wells Bakery? Bakery owner, Haydn Routley, recently bought the life-sized fibreglass friendly baker as a mascot but there’s one small problem – he doesn’t know what to name him. So, Haydn has put it out to the public, with a prize awarded to the winning entry. All you need to do is put down your name suggestion, followed by your own name and phone number, and enter it in store at the bakery. If your suggestion is chosen, you win. It’s as simple as that.

Brigade News
By Sara Oljey Two Wells CFS public relations officer Hi all, it’s been a fairly quiet Autumn/ Winter period so far. Two Wells CFS Brigade has attended several incidents including car fires and road crashes. However, we did attend a major house fire, which was caused by an electrical fault, causing an estimated $200,000 worth of damage. We were assisted by other nearby brigades. The good news was that everyone got out safely and there were no injuries. However we also attended an accident where we assisted with other brigades when a motorbike crashed into the Lower Light River. The rider was taken out by stretcher, which had to be pulled up the steep bank, with many hands assisting. He was flown to hospital by the rescue helicopter. On Saturday July 28 we held a recruitment drive and sausage sizzle, which was well attended, with many locals coming over for a chat and a sausage. Hopefully we will gain some new recruits as we are still badly in need of them. Our training starts at 7.30pm on Monday evenings and cadet training for 11-16 year olds from 6pm – 7.30pm fortnightly.

LOCAL community groups and individuals are being encouraged to apply for this year’s round of District Council of Mallala Community Partnerships Funding Grants. DCM community development officer, Lynette Seccafien, said the program supported initiatives for the development and promotion of local clubs and communities and/or stimulated economic growth. “District Council of Mallala recognises the unique contributions made by volunteer, sporting and community organisations, without which we would not be the vibrant community we are today,” Lynette said. “The Community Partnerships Fund offers financial assistance to support grassroots organisations and aims to encourage, develop and support projects that provide a service or program to the residents of DCM.” Since its inception in 2001 more than $500,000 has been provided to local groups and organisations for a range of projects, with Lynette saying projects may include but are not limited to activities that enhance the diverse role of volunteers in the community, equipment purchases, youth development programs, environmental programs, and upgrades or improvements to sporting and recreational facilities/ infrastructure (some conditions apply). Successful projects in the past have included the Mallala Oval entrance, volunteer events, kitchen and air conditioning upgrades to community and sporting venues, a rainwater tank purchase, new chairs, tourism and information brochures, publishing of local history books, computer and information technology equipment purchases, paving projects, hot water service replacement, historical cairns, irrigation projects and gutter replacement. Individual Sports and Cultural Grant funding is also available all year round to assist individuals who are representing the district at a state and/or national level in their chosen field. To apply organisations must be non-government, not for profit, incorporated and based within the District Council of Mallala. For further information, application forms and criteria, visit www.mallala.sa.gov.au, council offices in Two Wells and Mallala, or contact Community Development Officer, Lynette Seccafien, on 8527 0200 or email lynette@mallala.sa.gov.au. Fifty per cent of each stallholder’s fee was donated to animal charity group, Friends of the Furry Ones, Nancy said, and many people donated canned and dry pet food to the shelter also. “I’m really passionate about their shelter because they do so much good work,” Nancy said. Terri Dohnt, of Lewiston, managed her stall Little Fashionista with sister, Elouise Dohnt, and said it was lovely to have such an event locally. “It’s been a great day and it’s nice to be doing a local market,” she said. “Meeting so many people from the community has been good too.” The next Designs and Delights market is set for Saturday September 15 at the Two Wells Community Centre. www.twowellsecho.com.au

ne of the more little known groups in Two Wells is the Two Wells Probus Club. Probus is derived from two words; PROfessional BUSiness, and was originally established in 1965 in England to help retired professional people meet other like-minded people, make new friends and expand their interests. The Two Wells Probus Club was established in 1995 and meets on a monthly basis at the local bowling club. Probus Club president, Ree Roden, has been a member for a few years now and relishes the friendships she has made from being involved. “The Probus slogan is fellowship, friendship and fun,” Ree said. “I know everybody in that group now (and) it gives me a sense of fulfilment. “A lot of people are seniors and they look forward to coming to Probus and that’s what it’s all about. They look forward to coming away with a laugh.” Ree says it’s important for people, especially elderly people, to feel they are not alone, and Probus is one way for them to meet others from the community and at the same time learn something new. Each month the club has a guest speaker who talks about their job, life activities or something of interest. Over the years the club has had many local and business people

Each month members are also treated to a silver screening in Gawler of the most recent movies and at Christmas it organises something extra special, like a cruise on the River Murray. “We want to keep the members happy and enjoying life,” Ree said. “It’s keeping my mind active and it does for a lot of people, because we really are learning something new each month. “And that’s what it’s all about, to boost the community life here in Two Wells.” With door prizes every month and a president’s mystery prize thrown in, there is a lot happening at Two Wells Probus Club. Slight delay on crossing
Work on the pedestrian rail crossing on the Two Wells to Gawler Road is slowly progressing but cannot be finished until parts arrive from overseas. District Council of Mallala depot operations co-ordinator, Keith Earl, said most of the work had been completed but council was waiting for the infill of the crossing to be fitted by Transfield Services, which was waiting for a specially made part imported from Europe. DCM is currently completing drainage works for the area and establishing a base for paving. A paved path from the crossing will link up with an existing path from Tangari Estate, with work set to begin next month. The pedestrian crossing should not be used until all work is completed.

‘Lost’ might be ‘found’ with police It is good to be back in Two Wells after my recent secondment to the Mallala Police Station. Lance and John have worked under difficult circumstances over the past few months, working one officer short. This at times can prove to be very difficult with the lack of staff. Two officers doing the work of three and attempting to keep the office open during the nominated times has provided some difficulties recently. I assure you, we make every effort to have the office open every day between 9am and noon. There are two issues here; if you drive foolishly or erratically anywhere within the state there is a good bet someone will see you and will make a complaint to police. As part of our duties we will follow up these complaints and deal with them accordingly.
The second issue is; if you sell a vehicle, make sure you contact Motor Registration (Service SA). Many of our traffic complaint and expiation enquiries have this issue where vehicles are still registered to persons after they have sold them. We have had people come into our station two years after selling a car complaining they are now receiving expiation notices for the vehicle. You only have 14 days to notify the motor registration office when you dispose of a motor vehicle; the onus is on both parties, the person buying the vehicle and the person selling the vehicle. • With spring just around the corner, we are still experiencing wet days which mean wet roads. MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From Lewiston ward Councillor Duncan Kennington
Give us your opinion
Within the next few months District Council of Mallala will be required to make decisions as to boundary realignment or alternatively abandoning boundaries, and therefore wards, altogether. At the moment Lewiston ward is entitled to four councillors out of 11. Although it is not required, each of them is a resident of Lewiston. In a worst-case scenario, if wards were abandoned, Lewiston could end up with zero councillors. This is not a desirable situation. Out-of-towners, with the best of intentions, will not have the intimate knowledge and dedication to the area that locals have. Currently, mayor is elected by the councillors on an annual basis. Council will need to decide whether to maintain the status quo or shift to a position where the mayor is elected directly by the residents for a term of four years. While this option may appear more democratic and attractive, at face value, it has several potential drawbacks. You may concur or have a different opinion. Let your councillors know so we can more accurately represent your views and interests. • I recently took a picture of not one but two Peaceful Doves (geopelia striata). Initially I assumed they were just baby versions of the usual run of the mill spotted doves. However, a bird savvy friend insisted they were of a different species. After much discussion amongst the armchair ornithologist experts gathered at my place we eventually identified the birds. Usually one enters the birdbath while the other keeps watch but on this day they entered simultaneously.

Plains Equestrian committee striving for success Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club (APEC) held its inaugural event on Sunday August 5, with a two-hour trail ride around the Reeves Plains area proving a great success. Formed earlier this year, the club’s committee has been working hard to secure insurance for its members, and is in the process of becoming an incorporated body. Club president, John Newton, was behind the formation of the club and said it had been a lot of hard working getting things up and running. Originally named Adelaide Plains Riding Club, the group had to change its name to Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club after it was discovered the name chosen had already
been registered in the 1980s. APEC treasurer and Two Wells resident, Tracey Smith, said the club’s constitution was recently approved at a general meeting and members were now looking forward to getting together to share their love of horses. “The club is really for enjoyment,” Tracey said. “It’s not designed to be of a competitive nature. “It’s about enjoying horses, sharing knowledge and mixing with like minded people (and) the members are the people who will drive the activities.” As part of the application process, Tracey said people were asked to identify what activities they were interested in and, on the basis of
that, events would be organised by the club. Some of the activities the club is considering include trail riding, mounted games, western and pleasure riding, dressage, and team penning, with the group hoping to meet on the last Sunday of each month. “There’s no restriction on types of saddlery and clothing used at events,” Tracey added. “As long as the gear used is safe.” To join it’s $25 for junior riders and $35 for adult riders plus insurance of $7.50 per person. Contact club president, John Newton on 0427153570 or email integrity@baonline.com.au for more information.

HEAVE! Some of TWF&NSC’s youngest members give it their all during the tug-of-war event at the club’s family night last month.
Family fun for everyone! Over the past few weeks the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club has held a number of fun social events. On June 30 the club staged a Spot the Celebrity night, with Hugh Heffner and a playboy bunny being spotted as well as Sponge Bob Square Pants and pop icon Michael Jackson. The small but enthusiastic
crowd was entertained by band Crossfader, with club footballer Eamon Fetherstonhaugh impressing with his musical talents. Last month the youngest members of the club also got to let their hair down a little with a fun, family-themed games night held on July 14. Co-ordinated by Under 8 coach, Joe Cannizzaro and a team
puzzle time
of parent helpers, the youngsters enjoyed a variety of activities and games, including tug-of-war, three legged races and a kicking accuracy game. As the business end of the season starts to approach, the club still has a few nights of entertainment up its sleeve including an open mic night on August 18. So bring out your inner singer
and contactAnthony Cavallaro on 0401 451 430 to register. And don’t forget to mark this date in your diary, September 21, when the club will celebrate the end of season with its annual Redlow event. So why not grab a friend and head on down to the clubrooms, or take the family for a great value meal?

Two Wells Echo, August
After years of playing European football, Two Wells local, James Dimasi, has taken up Aussie Rules footy and loves the challenge of the oblong ball.
n above: A Grade winners, Helen Day, Megan Button and Reva Cullen. n left: B Grade winners, Tine Perry, Jenny Menzel and Nancy Bubner. n below left: C Grade winners, Elaine Grigg, Aileen Oliver and Jill Wildy.
Many strings to James’ bow • From back page “I wanted to play world cup soccer so I needed to keep on improving my skills wherever I could.” Although his dreams of playing for Australia never eventuated, James is still a mad soccer fan and loves playing the game. He is a striker, often playing as a forward or in the centre-mid on the field and helps to set up goals for his team members. For the past four years he played for the Croydon Kings Soccer Club, but was last year recruited by Port Pirie based Savoy Soccer Club and now plays as part of their league every Sunday. Despite the lengthy travel each week, James says he is enjoying the Spencer Gulf competition and is relishing his club being among the top contenders for season ends’ top prize. So, with soccer seemingly running through his veins, what made James take up Aussie Rules football only this year, at 22 years of age? “I used to play football at lunch times at Blackfriars but I never really got into it,” he said. “Soccer was a European thing and it was all I’d really ever played.” Enter his lovely girl friend, Kate Lange, who plays netball for Two Wells Netball Club. After much urging for him to give “footy” a try, James went down to training and put his hand up to play. He started playing for Two Wells in the B grade, and is already making a name for himself. He was lucky enough to clinch a goal with his first kick of the footy. And so what does he think of this much-loved Australian game? “The skills involved with the ball are challenging that’s for sure,” James said. “I really enjoy it because it’s something different to soccer. “I like the kicking and the tackling involved with footy but the hand passing and picking up the ball from the ground has been a little bit difficult. “There’s a great feel at the club too, it’s a lot of fun.”
don’t miss your next
When James is not playing soccer or football he works at his parents’ Two Wells based fruit and vegetable business. The small Dimasi fruit and veg shop on Old Port Wakefield Road is one many locals have patroned over the years. James’ parents, Vince and Sue, have been in the market garden business since he was a child, and he fondly remembers helping his dad out in the glasshouses. The family grew mainly capsicums and tomatoes, and although they do not grow their vegetables today as they did in the past, they are still providing quality fruit and vegetables. “This shop has been here 30 or 40 years,” James said proudly. “And it was opened as a fruit shop. “When I was little we were growing tomatoes and capsicums (but) we stopped this when I was about 15 or 16 and now get our produce from the markets. “Our orders go to northern Adelaide and to many hotels and cafes around Adelaide. Market days are every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, with James getting up at 2.30am on Mondays and Fridays to source the freshest, tastiest fruit and vegetables possible. “I really like the fact that one day I can own my own business,” James said. “Rather than working for someone else I can be my own boss, and it’s good to always have fresh fruit and veg at the back door. “It’s also great getting to know the local people. “We have our regular customers that come in and have a chat with us.” As well as his soccer and burgeoning footy skills, James is also pretty skilled in the kitchen and had even started an apprenticeship as a chef a few years ago. One of his hobbies is going out to eat at different places. When pressed, James said his “signature” dish would be his Nonna’s special breakfast of boiled eggs, diced and toasted bread, with a hint of olive oil and salt, all broken up into bite size pieces and mixed together. All in all James, there are many strings to your bow.

Allmond plays 150
Inspiring Two Wells footballer, Lee Allmond, played his 150th A grade game last month, and is hoping his beloved footy club will be celebrating again at the end of the season with a premiership. Twenty-eight-yearold Lee grew up in Two Wells, and after playing for the local school, joined the Under 13 junior colts team in 1994 at Two Wells Football Club. He tasted premiership success that same year and has been a committed and dedicated club player ever since. Lee celebrated his 150th game against Hummocks-Watchman Eagles on July 21 with a great team effort, thumping the Eagles by more than 100 points. He says the club is currently sitting in second spot on the ladder and after being forced to watch from the sidelines for most of the season last year due to a knee injury, is working hard to help get them over the line in September. However, the next few weeks may prove telling as he recovers from a hamstring strain and is forced again to watch from the boundary. Injury is nothing new to Lee; aside from his hamstring injury, this year he’s also suffered concussion and broken his nose. But it’s all for the love of the game, a love he’s had since first picking up the red leather ball as a
By Bec O’Brien youngster. “I lived and breathed footy when I was a kid, I was obsessed,” Lee said. “Now, I pride myself on my footy, I take it seriously, I train hard, I warm up right, I just love my footy (and) I’m hoping we can cap off a great year.” At first Lee played in the mid-field but in the past two years has moved into a more forward role and hopes to improve on his scoring conversion rate before the finals. “I think I’ve kicked about 26 goals for the season but I have kicked a lot of points too, about the same I think,” he admitted. Having won premierships in Under 13s, Under 17s and B Grade, Lee says it would be terrific to add an A Grade trophy to his cabinet. And he feels the town is behind the team. “The atmosphere at the club is great, the feel and the loyalty of the players, how everybody sticks together, it just works,” he said. “And everyone gets along, it’s like the whole town sticks together.” Two Wells takes on Virginia on August 18 and then comes up against Hamley Bridge at home on August 25, before the semi finals start on September 2, so why not get out and support the red and white if you can?

James ‘striking’ lucky in soccer and footy Twenty-two-year-old Two Wells resident, James Dimasi has played soccer for almost three-quarters of his life. It is a passion he has spent countless hours pursuing, and one he’d even dreamed of fulfilling at the highest level. In his first year playing for Salisbury United at the tender age of five, James kicked an impressive 44 goals. His talent was quickly identified and over the years he has taken every opportunity to further develop and enhance his skills. From Salisbury United, James went to Adelaide City. “It was more of an opportunity
Bec O’Brien reports to get better at my skills there,” he explained. “It was a much bigger club and they had a great focus on skill development.” Following this, James played as a 16-year-old in the Under 23s for Noarlunga United, travelling the long distance from Two Wells twice a week for training and club games. “I used to do my homework in the car on the way to training,” James laughed.

LOCAL soccer star, James Dimasi. “And I had training of some sort four or five nights a week.” James represented the state as a young teenager and has also been a member of a variety of soccer development academies, including the European Football Institute. “These academies give extra training and development,” James said. “And it was on top of my regular soccer commitments at club level. n Continued page 15
