Thompson Beach residents fight for their foreshore REPORT: Bec O’Brien Emotion was raw and nerves tight as a large contingent of Thompson Beach residents crowded into District Council of Mallala council chambers on Tuesday, January 29, as councillors prepared to discuss proposed works on the community’s beachfront levee. About 30 residents, some bearing placards and posters in protest of the works, gathered in a show of support for the shoreline of their town, citing its unique migratory birdlife and fragile native vegetation ecosystems as too important to rush into any major works. DCM was planning to begin an initial $150,000 worth of works to improve the levee to protect the Thompson Beach township from rising sea levels in the future in February or March this year. A number of residents, including Norman Trestrail – who organised a community meeting in the town on January 13 – gave impassioned deputations to councillors. Many were frustrated they had not been adequately consulted about the proposed works, despite council sending out 130 letters informing
residents of their intent. They asked council to consider the long-term impacts disturbing the natural environment and sand dune area of the levee would have on the flora and fauna for future generations. “Does everything have to come down to dollars?” Mr Trestrail
asked councillors. “The destruction of this coastal vegetation will really devastate us.” After more than an hour of discussion and deputations to the council, including that of Adelaide resident and avid bird watcher, Kate Buckley, who was “speaking for the birds”,
councillor Steve Jones put forward the following motion: “That no on-ground works be commenced at the proposed Thompson Beach levee site until Council has received a detailed report concerning the likely environmental impacts, alternative strategies, and
their associated costs and benefits, and including a vegetation survey of the proposed areas likely to be affected and, if possible, an update on the Mallala Coastal Adaptation Options Study previously budgeted by Council.” n Continued page 2

• From Page 1 The motion was passed with a majority of councillors in support. Cr Wasley and Cr Strudwicke voted against the motion, Cr Howard was absent. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said council would now review its options with respect to the levee. “Given community feedback and that some information has come to light in terms of the history with the levee and natural sand dunes council will review its options,” Mr Mansueto said. “This will delay any works to upgrade the protection for Thompson Beach residents and it’s also likely to result in the loss of external funding.” Mr Mansueto said council staff had also been contacted by some Thompson Beach residents in support of the proposed upgrade who were concerned about the impact not moving forward would have on their properties. Those in the gallery applauded the decision with cheers and clapping and an audible sigh of relief.
Once construction has begun in an area, NBN Co will generally release further maps as they add more construction modules to an area until all properties in the fibre footprint are covered. NBN Co community account manager for South Australia, Christopher Gregory, said the release of the maps each month signified to residents and businesses that they were on the way to being able to take advantage of the benefits that the NBN offered. “People will be able to make high-quality video calls, download movies in minutes, stream TV and have all the family online at once,” Mr Gregory said. On average, it takes about 12 months from the start of construction until residents and business owners can order NBN retail services from telephone or internet service providers. “Information is already available online about the plans and packages that telephone and internet service providers are offering over the NBN,” Mr Gregory said.
The details of which service providers are operating in individual areas will be available closer to service activation at www.nbnco.com.au/serviceproviders,” Mr Gregory said. For those outside of an NBN area, the interim satellite service is available to eligible individuals, small businesses and Indigenous communities across Australia, with the first priority being given to those eligible customers who currently have no alternate access to commercial broadband services. Under the interim satellite service, the satellite equipment and standard installation will be provided by NBN Co, via retail service providers. To find out if your premise is eligible for this interim satellite service, use the Broadband Services Locator tool to give you an indication of the type of service you can purchase. For most people, celebrating a major birthday such as a 70th, consists of family and friends gathering to catch up, share memories, have a few laughs and eat cake. For Two Wells local, Rae Corston, hers was a little different. While she did mark the occasion with cake in midDecember last year, Rae had a another rather unique event planned – jumping out of an aeroplane at 12,000 feet. Despite the worries from family members and the disbelief of her heart surgeon – Rae had a pacemaker fitted a few years ago – she was determined to go ahead with the jump and even roped in friend, Kaye Brown, to join her. Rae made the jump in December. With a 20-minute flight to get to the desired height of 12,000 feet, Rae had plenty of time to marvel at the wonderful view and also to think about “what if?”, but said it was something she had wanted to do for many years and wasn’t scared. “I can’t explain what it felt like,” Rae said. “It’s was just awesome. “My first thought was, ‘I wish I hadn’t done this’ but it was only for a few seconds.” After freefalling for 50 seconds, the parachute opened. “It’s the closest I’ll ever get to being an angel,” Rae said. Rae’s next adventure is sure to get the heart pumping again. She hopes to climb the Sydney Harbour bridge with her grandson in the near future.

Mallala Council approves upgrade at Two Wells oval
Our new club
Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club can now proceed with the much anticipated upgrade of its clubrooms after the District Council of Mallala granted planning approval last month. TWF&NSC president, Francis Pellizzari, welcomed the decision, saying it was a major milestone for the club. “It is a milestone event in that now we can certainly push ahead with finalised plans which meets all the criteria we need,” he said. “We have already engaged an engineer and now we will finalise our costings and then go to the community seeking the
assistance we need to complete the project. “The kinds of assistance we are seeking is varied, it may be labour, it might be financial or goods in kind. “But now we can start to say, ‘we’ve got our approval, this is what it will look like, this it what it costs and we need assistance’.” While the club still has to achieve development approval, Mr Pellizzari said they could move forward more rapidly now, adding he hoped much of the work would be completed by the end of this football and netball season. The project will see the
clubrooms undergo a major makeover, with an extended dining area to the south, new bar and kitchen facilities, back access from the netball courts, improved office space, coolroom and storeroom, plus new toilet and showering amenities, bigger football change rooms and an area for umpires and trainers as well as a cricket storeroom. On the back of the A grade premiership win last year and success of its Under 17 senior colts team, who went back-toback premiers, as well as the premiership of the A5 netballers, Mr Pellizzari said it was an exciting time for the club.
DCM plans rates change ‘consistent with others’ District Council of Mallala is considering a differential rating system as part of its rate review process, which it will put to community consultation this month. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said council had decided to change from a planning based system of allocating rates to one of land use. Residents’ rates will be assessed by three categories of land use; residential, primary production and, industrial and commercial, Mr Mansueto said. A waste service charge and a fixed charge rate are also being considered by council. Mr Mansueto said following a number of rounds of community consulta-
tion last year, a variety of options were put forward to councillors and this was the one council favoured. “What we are proposing is consistent with what the majority of other councils are doing,” he said. If approved this structure of rating will come into effect from the 2013/2014 financial year. Residents will have an opportunity to have their say on the proposed new rating system at two community information sessions scheduled for early next month. One will be held at the Mallala Institute on Monday March 4 at 6.30pm and one at the Two Wells Community Centre the following night, March 5, also at 6.30pm.

echo 5 MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS:
AKO IS ‘ACE’ AS AN EXCHANGE STUDENT
From DCM Mayor and Lewiston ward Councillor
Duncan Kennington
THE
7
FACTOR
It works for Sandra and Barry Lewiston residents, Sandra and Barry Bennier, have been hosting exchange students for the past 20 years. And sadly, this year will be their final year of hosting as the EF Foundation for foreign study program they are with wraps up. Over the years Sandra and Barry have welcomed into their home more than 35 students from countries across the globe, including America, Germany, China, Sweden and Japan. Some stay for a few weeks, most for 12 months, all are treated as part of the family. Many have become friends for life who keep them updated on their happenings with photos of events, milestones and careers and there’s even the occasional visit back to Australia to see their “Aussie Mum and Dad”. Although Sandra and Barry have four children of their own, 14 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren they decided to open their home to exchange students after a friend recommended the experience. Sandra says every student is different but they’re all “like my own children”. “It’s an experience, that’s for sure,” she laughed. “You learn so much hosting from different parts of the world. “You learn about their food and their culture.” Sandra and Barry have taken to hosting students primarily from Japan and have even visited the country; in Sandra’s case, three times. Seventeen-year-old Japanese student, Ako Takaji, is the couple’s last exchange student who will call their Lewiston residence home. She arrived in Australia from a city background mid-July last year and will leave in July this year. Two Wells Echo, February, 2013
Bec O’Brien reports: It’s her first time away from home, and for an only child, it’s been a big step and a steep learning curve, but she is absolutely loving it, and has fitted in well with her host family. They have an easy rapport, and a cheeky banter with each other. “She (Ako) is part of the family and even when she goes home she’s still part of the family,” Barry explains.
AKO loves her tennis.
Ako is comfortable enough to call Sandra and Barry, Mum and Dad, and is relishing the relaxed lifestyle and freedom of living here in Australia. “As I had heard about the exchange program I wanted to go overseas somewhere, and I was lucky Mum (Sandra) chose me,” Ako said. “In Japan I practise tennis nearly every day and I play tennis on the weekends.” Ako’s tennis prowess has not gone unnoticed in northern tennis circles, with the teenager playing juniors for Two Wells and seniors for Balaklava. She took out the Gawler District Tennis Association 16 and
under girls’ singles and doubles titles in January this year, and also played in the boys doubles when they were short a player, and won that title too. Ako says she would like to play in a few tournaments before she leaves the country. In Year 11 at Gawler and District College (formerly Gawler High School), Ako is enjoying studying different subjects she would not do in Japan. Last year she did woodwork and made a rolling pin and jewellery box to take home. “This is a subject she has never done before,” Barry said. As English is not her first language Ako is speaking very well and her understanding is very good in this interview. One of the biggest differences Ako has noticed is the sort of foods Australians eat. “I like all Mum’s cooking but I really like her mashed potatoes and the cakes, the banana cake, fruit cake and chocolate cake,” she smiled. While hosting an exchange student does have its ups and downs, Sandra and Barry both agree it’s the way hosts think about the experience that makes the difference and it’s what you make of it. And while some exchange programs pay families to host students, the Benniers do not take up this option as they feel they shouldn’t pay for an experience they really enjoy. “You’ve got to have the attitude that you want to host and you want to make them feel as part of your family,” Barry said. For more than 35 exchange students across the globe, spanning more than 20 years, feeling part of the Bennier family at the end of their stay is something I’m sure they would agree with.

Undoubtedly the Mallala event of this month was theAustralia Day Celebrations. These were held in the Two Wells Community Centre. The full house action started at 8am with a cooked breakfast. Not being a breakfast person I didn’t partake but the feedback from those that did was all positive. Subsequent to the breakfast was the Citizenship Ceremony where Roland Presland, Tracy Stacey, and Janice Knevitt were conferred with Australian Citizenship. I presented them with gifts including a tree, which I believe is a golden wreath wattle (saligna acacia). The congregation then sang the Australian National Anthem, which sounded great despite me joining in. Then it was time for the Australia Day Awards. Rocky and Rosa Settimio received the Australia Day Citizen of the Year Award. Their acceptance speeches were humble and inspiring. Community Event of the Year Award recipient was Mallala Melbourne Cup Community Luncheon. The volunteer committee consists of Laura Parsons, Faye Dunston, Gwenda Griffiths, Chiarina Dunlop and Rosemary Jenkin. Community Group of the Year Award recipient was the Two Wells Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch-Blue Light Discos. The committee consists of Senior Constable John Winsor, Anne Porter, Maria Aunger, Jennifer Nicol, Mark Wasley, Patrick Porter, Josh Silvy and Lisa Allen. Lynette Seccafien presented me with a pair of Australia thongs for my ceremonial role. I have already been busy practising wearing them ready for next year’s event. n ALL the pictures and reports, Page 8 & 9

‘More than just a meal’ from local volunteers
I
n Two Wells there is a small group of volunteers who provide an essential and important service to the community. They are the ladies of the Two Wells Meals on Wheels group (at time of print, there were no male members). Established in 1986 they’ve been helping people in the district for the past 26 years and over the last two decades have delivered more than 26,000 meals to people in the area! It’s a service perhaps, like me, you didn’t know existed, and one many could possibly access. For just $7 a day MOW customers receive a three-course meal consisting of soup, main course and dessert. And the menu is quiet impressive including minestrone, pumpkin or cream of chicken soup, a selection of roasts, fish, patties, casseroles, Spanish chicken, curries, and much more. Dessert could be apple crumble, sticky date pudding, panacotta, fruit salad or custard and the food incorporates seasonal holidays such as Christmas and Easter. “On any day we’re delivering about 4000 meals across the state,” MOW chief executive officer, Sharyn Broer, explained. “And more than 5000 people in any given week might be helped by Meals On Wheels.” The not-for-profit organisation has been preparing and delivering meals since 1954 and strives to help people live independently in their own homes. Sharyn said the service was “more than just a meal”, which is the organisations’ slogan, with volunteers often an important point of contact for people living by themselves. While the majority of people who access MOW are retired and generally in their 80s, Sharyn said anyone who can’t shop for themselves, is sick or ill, or is perhaps a carer, can utilise the service.

ABOVE: Two Wells MOW volunteers, Maria Pellizzari and Anne Stodart, with the meals they will deliver to people in the area. volunteer Helen Gameau (left), drops off meals to Two Wells resident Ivy Southgate. Clients are usually directed to MOW by a health professional, a family member or a neighbour, but people can refer themselves and their acceptance is based on needs not on any financial means test. “The guideline is if you’re not able to cook or shop for yourself,” Sharyn explained. “It’s not about ‘I don’t feel like cooking’”. Meals are prepared at the MOW Meals On Wheels chief executive officer, Sharyn Broer (left) recently presented Two Wells volunteers, Judi Frost, Lorraine Goss and Pam Duncan, with pens in recognition of their long service to the group.
kitchen in Kent Town and then delivered by a team of drivers to clients. In Two Wells the meals are delivered frozen on a fortnightly basis and are kept in a freezer in the Uniting Church hall until volunteers take it in turn to deliver them to about five people in the area. A range of dietary requirements can be catered for, with the service offering meals that are diabetic
friendly, gluten free and dairy free. Meals can also be modified to suit people who have trouble chewing and swallowing or adapted for people with food texture needs. Vegetarian and low potassium requirements can also be met by the service. “There are a lot of different things we can cater to,” Sharyn said. “Generally we aim for 1/3 of a person’s daily nutritional needs in
each meal. “What we want to say to people is they’re paying for their meal and we can meet the needs of as many people who need it. “We’ve got many volunteers.” Volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and age groups and include shift workers, retirees and stay-at-home mums. In Two Wells the small but steady group of volunteers, who include well-known locals Pamela Duncan, Helen Gameau, Judi Frost, Anne Stodart, Lorraine Goss and Maria Pellizzari, are an important connection to MOW customers. They are a friendly face at the door and an ear when people are in need of a chat. Ninety-four-year-old Two Wells local, Ivy Southgate, has been utilising the MOW service five days a week for more than 15 years and says it is a “life saver”. “The food is first class and I think it’s good of the girls to bring it right to my door,” Ivy said. “I would not be living if it wasn’t for Meals On Wheels.” Volunteer and inaugural Two Wells MOW member, Helen Gameau, relished the opportunity to give something back to the community. “I get a lot of enjoyment out of doing something for the community,” Helen said. “And I can see that some people need it.” Most clients are aged in their 80s and 90s, which has seen a few funny moments for the volunteers, with Anne and Judi saying they’ve heard some great stories and had many wonderful experiences when delivering meals. It sounds like a terrific way to get out and meet people while at the same time helping residents stay in their homes longer. Good on you girls! THEN – Two Wells

WHAT A BIG DIFFERENCE IN JUST A FEW WEEKS!
Kindy gets a great new look
When youngsters at Two Wells Kindergarten came back from holidays this year, they were no doubt surprised and excited to see their old, tired, outdoor stomping ground had undergone a major makeover. In place of the patchy grass and worn-out play space, the children now have an inviting, stimulating and inspiring outdoor area complete with its own dry creek bed, natural log stepping stones, shade trees and native grasses. Kindy director, Sarah Wormald, said the area had long been due for an upgrade and the centre had worked hard in recent years to make it a reality.
AFTER
NOW – Sarah is excited
by the centre’s recent outdoor upgrade and gives it a big thumbs up.
Funds for the $11,500 project were sourced from the District Council of Mallala’s Community Partnerships Fund, with a grant of $5,500, and the centre raised the rest. Mrs Wormald said the new outdoor area was built using an impressive 90 per cent recycled materials, most of which was donated by local families and the community, and aimed to expose children to nature. “This is absolutely fantastic,” she said. “We really wanted to create that natural element and expose children to the natural environment. “It was also about making a
space to help them create imaginative play and we can’t wait to see what sort of play paths are created from it.” The inclusion of seven deciduous trees in the area is also an avenue the centre is hoping to capitalise on, with Mrs Wormald highlighting opportunities for the children to learn about life cycles, the importance of shade, as well as experience the beautiful colours of autumn. “We would really like to thank all the families who donated sleepers, moss rocks, logs and natural resources,” she added. “These have really enhanced our outdoor area and are much appreciated.
Your say in mayor choice District Council of Mallala could soon have a mayor elected by ratepayers, following a review by council. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said the lengthy process of the Elector Representation Review had highlighted a number of options, including a mayor elected by the community – as opposed to one voted in by councillors – and could also see the number of councillors reduced and wards done Two Wells Echo, February, 2013
away with. In 2010 a community poll conducted by council found the majority of voters supported a mayor elected by the community. Following legal advice, Mr Mansueto said council was bound by the poll outcome, which means district residents, not councillors, will vote in someone for the mayoral position at the 2014 elections. “The majority of metro councils have this process,” he said. “It’s getting less (prevalent) the mayor is elected by the coun-
cil.” If the mayor is elected by ratepayers their term will increase to four years from the current 12 months option used by DCM. At the council’s January meeting councillors resolved to undertake further consultation regarding the proposal of a no ward option instead of the current ward representation, as suggested in the review. A community meeting to discuss this is likely to be held in Two Wells in mid-March.

ustralia Day was celebrated around the country on Saturday January 26 with many backyard barbeques, trips to the beach and hometown cricket matches. In Two Wells more than 210 people enjoyed a hot breakfast at the community centre of sausages, bacon, eggs, toast and baked beans, which was provided by the District Council of Mallala and cooked by the local Red Cross group. It was a beautiful summer’s day where three district residents were among more than 1200 South Australians who made the pledge and became Australian citizens. Local individuals and community groups were also recognised for their efforts, commitment and community spirit with DCM Australia Day awards. In his first major community event as DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington spoke of how the Australian community was continually evolving and highlighted Australia Day as the perfect opportunity to appreciate all that is unique and special about our country. “Australia Day is a great opportunity for residents to get together and celebrate,” he said.

Bec O’Brien reports: “We live in communities which are continually evolving, just as we live in a country which is in a continual state of change and modification, whether it’s economic, cultural, social or the environmental landscape. “We come together with family, friends and communities to reflect on what it means to be an Australian citizen and to celebrate our shared history and the many benefits we enjoy living in this wonderful country.” Mayor Kennington then invited local residents, Roland Presland, Janice Knevitt and Tracy Stacey onto the stage to make the pledge to become an Australian citizen. Janice Knevitt, of Middle Beach, migrated from the Philippines six years ago, while Lewiston resident, Roland Presland, arrived in Australia from England more than 50 years ago. “Australian citizenship represents commitment to Australia and its people, the values we share and our common future,” Mayor Kennington told the gathering.
Mary and Peter Presland travelled from Modbury to witness the naturalisation of their son Roland.
“Becoming an Australian citizen is a major decision involving commitment, responsibility and public recognition. “We congratulate today’s citizenship candidates on making their decision to become Australian citizens.” After the pledge, the new citizens were presented with certificates and an Australian native seedling to mark the occasion. Two Wells locals and IGA proprietors, Rocky and Rosa Settimio, were then presented as the DCM’s Citizens of the Year for their continued support of local sporting groups, volunteer organisations and on-going contributions to the community. Other Australia Day awards announced by DCM included the Community Group of the Year award, which went to the Two Wells/Lewiston Neighborhood Watch group for their successful Blue Light discos, and the Community Event of the Year award, which was bestowed upon the Mallala Melbourne Cup Community Luncheon Committee for its Mallala Melbourne Cup community luncheon.

I
often talk about the importance of our environmental assets within the region. During the Australia Day celebrations in Two Wells our Landcare group witnessed what I believe to be one of our region’s greatest assets, its people. When a community works together we all benefit from what our environment has to offer. I have stressed the importance of creating habitat corridors, so our native animals can move around our district. A friend of mine ‘Scott’ snapped a photo of this sand goanna (pictured above) on the front porch of his house a few weeks ago. He lives about a kilometre from Camel Reserve in Lewiston, which is a small fragmented remnant reserve of great heritage value within our region. Goannas dig and live in burrows and are good tree climbers and will readily take refuge in a tree if a burrow is not nearby. They are active in the warmer months and track down and dig out lizards, insects, spiders, scorpions, centipedes and even small mammals i.e. rabbits. They are also foragers and will seek out and eat road kill, so please be mindful when travelling along our roads especially near these reserves. If you live near an area of woodland, shrub land or grassland growing on sandy soils you may be lucky enough to come across one of our resident goannas. The goanna is an example of

what can live within our region. By planting native plants throughout our region you are helping to create and build on to existing habitat corridors, so our native fauna, like the goanna, can move throughout our region. I also asked my friend to send his photo to the threatened species ecologist from Department of Environment Water &

Natural Resources (DEWNR). They are very keen to know of any further sightings of the sand goanna or heath goanna within our region. If you happen to see a goanna around your area and you are able to take a photo of the animal, including its tail, sightings can be reported via email to DEWNRThreatenedWildlife@sa.gov.au or contact your local Landcare group. We want to know what is living in our region and we can then pass this on to DEWNR.
The collected information will build a picture of these animals’ habitats and distribution. This is an opportunity for us as a community to gain insight into what animals live within our region and share this information with other communities. • My pond has been working overtime lately. My native fish are breeding and I haven’t seen a wriggler in the pond since I put the fish in. An array of birds from far and wide are flocking to this water source during our dry spells and a population of frogs are calling the pond home, which is evident from the croaking during the night and the frogs’ spawn left behind. Attracting wildlife to your garden is not hard to do, you just have to provide the right resources and sit back and enjoy the view on a daily basis. It’s a nice feeling being able to share our environment with these wild animals and know that you are making a difference in their lives. n Contact the Two Wells and Lewiston Landcare group by emailing twowellslewistonlandcare@y7mail.com or contacting Pat 0419 860 981.

Women’s team in fourth spot Bec O’Brien reports:
Women’s cricket in Two Wells is going strong, with one local team notching up an impressive 334 runs last month. The two-day match at Two Wells against North Pines on January 21 and 28 saw Team Black end the first day at 2/334 off 32 overs, giving them the highest score so far this season in the Para District Cricket Association women’s A or B grade competition. Leah Clifton top scored with 78. She retired at 30 runs and, once her teammates had all batted, came on again to make a further 48 runs. Leah hit an incredible 14 fours and one six during her batting stint and went on to collect 2/9 when she hit the field as a bowler the following week. Megan Curry made 36 not out, Heidi Bergen 35 not out and Rebecca Pool 34 not out. Sandee Applebee was out for 30 while Jessica Pool scored 21 not out and Ruby Cook was out for six. The following week the girls strived to bowl the visitors out but ran out of overs, leaving North Pines, however, well short at 5/115. In the bowling stakes Rebecca Pool nabbed 2 wickets for 14 runs, Ruby Cook 1/15 and Leah Clifton 2/9. The girls are currently fourth on the ladder and should see some finals action, along with their fellow teammates, Two Wells Team White, who are competing well and improving every week. • Pictured Two Wells Women’s Cricket Team Black members (back from left) Ali Eland, Leah Clifton, Amy McDonnell, Sandee Applebee, Megan Curry, (front) Jessica Pool, Bec Pool, Heidi Bergen and Ruby Cook – who recently scored a combined 334 runs off 32 overs.

Final results were Two Wells 1/130 defeated Atco 8/125 (cc), with Travis Wake returning bowling figures of 2/5 and Dylan Wise 2/27. There was one run-out in the match, with Devon Hardiman behind the throw, while Lachlan Goss, Daniel Hines and Nathan Applebee also took one wicket each.

Gawler and District Softball Association is celebrating 30 years of competition and is seeking people from the area who have been involved in the association over the past three decades to help them celebrate. A dinner will be held on March 9 at the Two Wells Community Centre, which is a fitting venue as the local Two Wells club is the only original club still competing. The evening will highlight the history of local softball and focus on many of the people who have contributed to the association over the years, as

well as those participating, and serving in administrative positions, at both state and national levels. Organisers envisage many past players and officials will attend and are keen to hear from anyone who has been involved with softball in the local area who would like to join in the celebrations or who can contribute memorabilia. Morning beach stroll Bec O’Brien reports:
Clubs kick into pre-season mode The 2013 football and netball season is fast approaching and you many have noticed the teams out training for pre-season already. The coaching positions at Two Wells Football Club remain unchanged from last year, with Mark Thomson leading the young A Grade side again, Matthew Gameau the Reserves, Adrian Daly Under 17s, Michael Kotsano Under 11s and Joe Cannizzaro Under 8s. The club is currently in the process of appointing a coach for the Under 14 side. TWF&NSC president, Francis Pellizzari, said the club had only lost two players from its premiership squad last year and was hoping to be in the running again this year. “A number of our Under 17 players have been training with the seniors trying to earn a spot, and given that we haven’t lost a lot of players, were certainly looking
to be competitive this year again,” he said. “We’d like to build on the success of last year (and) we’re very much looking to continue to promote our local talent as that was the core of our success last year.” In terms of the 2012 squad the club is only anticipating losing two players, one of them gun forward Jarrod Allmond, who is heading back to Woodville West Torrens Eagles, and on baller Daniel Hines, who has joined the navy. Before Christmas last year, the players held six trainings and started official preseason twice a week last month. TWF&NSC will again offer the fun, interactive Auskick program, and for the first time the netball club is going to introduce the national Net Set Go program for junior netballers. Keep an eye out in next month’s Echo for more netball news and information about Net Set Go.
An early morning beach ride at Port Parham marked the first event of the year for theAdelaide Plains Equestrian Club on Sunday January 27. Twenty-three riders and their horses enjoyed a relaxed morning walking along the beach, wading in the shallows and for some, taking their horses for a swim. APEC treasurer, Tracey Smith, said the event catered for all levels of riding ability, which saw riders participate at a level appropriate for their own experience as well as that of their horse. The club’s next event will be held on Saturday February 23 at Hams Park, Lewiston, with a twilight trail ride of the area planned from 6pm to 9pm. Other events organised for the year include a Relay for Life ride in March, a farrier information session in May, a Mt Crawford Forest ride in June and a quiz night in August. Contact adelaideplainsequestrianclub@gmail.com or visit the club’s website at http://freeteams.net/APEC for more information. Council Advisory Committees Members of Two Wells Pony Club helped test the base of the new water jump last month. Pictured left to right are Sara-Jane Jameson, Pentti Puro, Veronica Betts, Chelsea Harper, Shelley Henderson, and Kristy Pearn, with Kayleen Winslade standing in the water.
New cross country course a great asset to club Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club has high hopes for its soon-to-be-constructed one day event (ODE) cross country course, with the staging of its first such event for many years set for April this year. The course has been designed and built by club president, Pentti Puro, and is situated on private land along Aunger Road, east of Two Wells. The course will meet Equestrian Australia (EA) and Pony Club standards and see riders compete from Grade 5 level right up to pre-Novice level, which is a level below the standard seen in the Adelaide parklands in November at the annual International Horse Trials. Riders will be asked to jump between 20 and 30 jumps, depending on their grade, and travel up to 3.5 kilometres at a speed of up to 500 metres a minute. “That’s what makes this course different to other courses,” TWE&PC president, Pentti Puro said. “We have a lot of space for competitors. “Other courses are crisscrossing to make up the required distance but we don’t have to.
TWE&PC president, Pentti Puro, at the fence jump of the cross country course the club is building.
In 2011 Council established four (4) Committees which would play a key role in identifying the key strategic initiatives required for Council to achieve its Vision. Vacancies currently exist in the following committees and local community members are encouraged to nominate their interest and be part of the development of the District. • Facilities & Infrastructure Advisory Committee (4 positions)
• E n v i r o n m e n t a l M a n a g e m e n t Advisory Committee (3 positions)
Interested community members are encouraged to obtain a copy of the Terms of Reference for the Committees and apply by completing an application form. Application forms can be accessed from Council’s website www.mallala.sa.gov.au or collected from the following Council locations: • Main Office at 2a Wasleys Road, Mallala • Sub-office at 69 Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells • Two Wells Library at 61 Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells
“It’s quite unique.” The Two Wells course will be one of only three Grade 1 accredited cross country courses in the state. Life-long member and committee member, Rebecca Puro, said for many years the club had held showjumping, dressage and games events at its home base on Aunger Rd in Lewiston, but they have not had the land space for a cross country course of this scale. In the past club members wanting to pursue eventing at a higher level had to travel great distances to train. “Riders in the club are competing at state level and having this course will give them more
opportunities to train at that level,” Rebecca said. “It will also cater for riders of all ages, from the beginner riders right up to those who are aiming for bigger events.” While some of the jumps on the course will be permanent fixtures many are being constructed in a portable fashion, giving the club the opportunity to use them at their home base. Rebecca said the club was very appreciative of the support local businesses had given to the venture and was excited about the coming ODE, with between 150 and 200 entries hoped for. The club has been backed in the project with a $3,000 grant
from the District Council of Mallala’s Community Partnerships Fund and a $3,000 grant from the Office of Sport and Recreation’s SA Active Clubs Program. The public is invited to attend the ODE in April with dressage events being held on Saturday April 27 and showjumping and cross country on Sunday April 28 from 9am. Entry is free with food and drink facilities available. The club is also putting out a call to all interested horse people to help with the running of the ODE. Contact Pentti Puro on 0409 609 600 if you can help in any way.
Developing junior tennis players
Two Wells Tennis Club has received a $250 donation from the Two Wells Blue Light Disco committee recently. Members of the TWBLD committee presented a cheque to the club on Thursday January 31, with the funds set to go towards junior tennis development. In other tennis news: for an optional gold coin donation, beginner coaching is now on Thursdays from 5pm with Diane Meaney. Diane has over 20 years of experience coaching children in the Two Wells area and is a life member of the Two Wells District Tennis Club. Unfortunately, due to a lack of numbers, the club had to cancel its Monday night coaching with Brian Lloyd for the remainder of the season, but will look at staging a coaching clinic sometime next season. Team training is also on Thursdays from 5.30pm - 6.30pm with Kane Foubister and Diane Meaney available for coaching. Team matches started on February 2 and will continue until the season wraps up in March. Contact TWTC junior coordinator, Marie Tapscott, on 0419 838 929 for any information about junior tennis or if you are interested in joining or being involved in any way. Young Windsor resident, Jason Bowyer, is starting to make a name for himself in the fast paced world of go-kart racing. He is pictured above racing his go-kart.

Ten-year-old Windsor resident, Jason Bowyer, isn’t fazed by the fast speeds or the inches from the ground at which he sits. He just loves the feeling of speed and the thrill of taking his competitors by surprise as he takes the inside corner and races to the front in his machine of choice – the go-kart. And the Year 6 student at Mallala Primary School is starting to make a name for himself in the cadet driver division, where he recently took out the Barossa club championship and placed third in the Festival State Cup. Jason lived in Two Wells for four years before moving to Windsor and took up the sport as a seven-year-old after his dad, David, was looking for a father-son activity to become involved in. The pair, as well as older sister Allison, 12, spend most weekends criss-crossing the state competing in go karting events, and with the season running from January to November, they compete almost every weekend of the year. They also venture interstate, with competitions held in Melbourne, Mildura and Horsham. Racing for Omega Karts and a member of the Southern Go Kart Club based at Bolivar, Jason prefers the bitumen circuits to the dirt tracks favoured by his sister.
T NEWSfeature
Bec O’Brien
He is an up-and-coming driver who is showing good potential, evidenced last March when he broke the lap record at Monarto; a feat not for the faint hearted as he raced around at about 70 kilometres per hour. “I tried footy and cricket, but everything else is boring,” Jason explained of his passion for go karting. “I love everything about go-karting. “It’s a lot of fun.” Jason trains on a dirt track his dad built in the paddock of his Windsor home and competes against a mixed field of boys and girls of up to 20 drivers at each event. Despite his young age, David says his son has developed a signature-driving move, which is starting from the back of the pack and working his way to the front. “He comes from the back of the field like no other go-karter,” David said. It is obviously a position Jason relishes. “I sit there and wait for my moment,” he grinned. “I like overtaking, I just say ‘see ya later’

and pass them one by one.” Like the V8 super cars that grace our streets in events such as the Clipsal 500, David says the sport of go karting is very technical, and despite the high speeds, is a safe activity for his son to be involved in. “It’s a very technical sport,” he explained. “It’s as technical as the V8 super cars. “The karts are weighed after each race and if they come under a specified weight they are disqualified. “I believe it’s the safest form of motorsport and I would say every V8 supercar driver started their careers in go karts.” David says the sport is also very family orientated, adding the relaxed atmosphere and family environment of the go karting community make attending competitions enjoyable. It is a community where “everybody knows everybody’s kids” and Mums and Dads can really unwind and enjoy themselves knowing their kids are safe, he said. This year Jason moves up to Rookies, where he will be competing against bigger, stronger and faster drivers, but this doesn’t seem to faze him, like coming from the back of the pack to take the lead I guess! Keep an eye on this youngster; we could well see his name in relation to motorsport in years to come.
