MAY 2013

Two Wells Melodrama Group’s 2013 production, “One Hump or Two”, will be a show not to miss this month, so grab your diary and mark down the dates for the chance to enjoy a great night of entertainment. First performed by the group in 1987, “One Hump or Two” is a reprise of the original script by Les “Nig” Williams. The updated script promises the usual Two Wells fun and frivolity, along with a great meal. Witness the irrepressible Anne Arbon as belly dancer “Shican”, or marvel at Paul Schmelzkopf as Arabian Sheik Al Avem, and chuckle at Katie O’Doherty as part of a camel, among other favourite performers. Director, Eleisha Arbon is excited about this season’s desert-set show and is encouraging everyone to join in the fun. “It’s going to be a bright, colourful show with plenty of laughs,” she said. Tickets are $35 and include a three-course meal, or $30 for a two-course meal at the Sunday matinee performance. Book online at www. trybooking.com or phone 8520 2778. Performance dates are: May 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 & 25, with the matinee on Sunday May 19.

Council retains wards

But there’s one gone – and a councillor will depart, reports BEC O’BRIEN:

On stage for this year’s performance by the Two Wells Melodrama Group will be (clockwise from left) Sarah Groom, Rick Bailey, Janene Lynn, Katie O’Doherty and Ben Harvey.

The number of councillors and wards will be reduced in the District Council of Mallala following a lengthy electoral review process which last month saw the council make an in-principle decision to continue with a ward structure for the district. As DCM entered the final stages of its elector representation review councillors were presented with two options at its April 22 meeting. The first option was to have no wards and nine councillors plus a mayor elected by the community; the alternative was three wards comprising three representatives for each ward and a mayor elected by the community. Each option would see the total number of councillors reduced from 11 to 10. Councillors were divided on what structure should be used to best represent the community, with the first option of having no wards being lost narrowly. Councillors Wasley, Mc-

Coll, Jones and Strudwicke all voted in favour of abolishing the long-held ward system, with the general consensus being councillors were representing the whole council area not just pockets of it. Those councillors pushing for the continuation of wards included Cr Heley, Cr Summerton, Cr Daniele, Cr Keen and mayor Kennington. Councillors Anne Picard and Yvonne Howard did not attend the meeting. Councillors also voted for the names of Two Wells, Lewiston and Mallala/Dublin for the new three-ward option. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said following the most recent round of community consultation, eight written submissions were received with five supporting the noward option. A three-week community consultation period on the new proposal started on May 2 and will close on May 24, with councillors making a final decision at its June meeting.

It’s the three R’s for Angle Vale students

IF you would like to learn more about our local area and have a keen appreciation for food, then book your seat now on the “Grazing Around the Plains” bus tour for later this month. Proudly hosted by the Two Wells Public Library the May 22 event will take in local food producers Wirrabank Dairy Farm, Wildfox Wines and Verdale Olives. Tickets are $20 and include lunch. Reduce, reuse and recycle. These are the “three Rs “the staff and children at Angle Vale Primary School like to focus on as well as the traditional reading, writing and arithmetic. As part of this focus – which includes recycling classroom food scraps, paper and plastic drink bottles – the school’s sustainability committee has set about revitalising a barren and wasted area of their yard. Year 4/5 teacher Phillip Malcolm is involved in the Explore and Learn Habitat Garden planned for the school, and is excited by the potential of the venture, saying it will be a terrific educational tool for the staff and students and an inviting

Bec O’Brien reports: play area when it is completed later in the year. Mr Malcolm said the project began last year with lots of discussion and ideas thrown around about how best to use the space and what to create. Students helped design aspects they would like to see incorporated into the project including a bridge, frog pond, rock area and dry creek bed. “We want a garden with indigenous plants and native grasses,” Mr Malcolm said. “It will also include a frog pond,

a habitat for lizards and geckos and plants that attract butterflies.” Overflow from a nearby rainwater tank will be channeled into a dry creek bed and flow into the frog pond, reducing the amount of water wasted, and the garden will be planted with native plants. Mr Malcolm said one of the key aims of the project was to give students an outdoor area where they could explore, play and learn in an educational context. “We want to reintroduce native species to the school site and area,” he said. “We want to give people the chance to look and see what can be grown in the area.

“I believe kids should also have a chance to play in the dirt (and) this garden will be an area for them to play. “It will be an outdoor learning and play area where they can look in, explore and enjoy as well as learn in.” The habitat garden will also be linked with the school’s vegetable garden, which is focused on wiping out waste. Planting out of the project area is hoped to commence in Term 2, with funds sourced from State Government’s Million Trees program, Coles’ junior Landcare program and the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.

Changes came after consultation

At last month’s council meeting several decisions were finalised concerning council elections. This has been consequent to a lengthy period of deliberation and several community consultations. As reported on the front page, the mayor will be elected directly by the community at the time of local council elections, not by the councillors as presently occurs. Under the proposal there will be three wards as opposed to the current four. They will be called Lewiston, Two Wells, and Dublin/Mallala Ward.

MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor and Lewiston ward Councillor

Duncan Kennington Each of these wards will have three councillors. Together with the mayor, council will consist of 10 councillors as opposed to the current 11. Tidy country! • I throughly enjoyed a recent trip to Japan. However, having travelled to a country where all space is at a premium it was refreshing to return to Lewiston

Two Wells Echo, May, 2013

where we are awash with space, more space and trees galore. We could learn a lesson, though, from Japanese tidiness. It was only after several days when I saw some rubbish on the ground that I realised Japan is virtually rubbish free. It is not very demanding for individuals to put

their rubbish in a bin and then we would be rubbish free. Also, if we all picked up the rubbish that accumulates in front of our properties Lewiston would look even better than it does now. • I’ve placed my order with the Natural Resource Centre for two boxes of mixed indigenous ground cover plants. I’d suggest that all Two Wells/ Lewistonians should order at least one box of 20 plants for $20. The order details are contact 8523 7715 or email emily.griffiths@ sa.gov.au. The order date for that price is by June 17.

Be vigilant with winter fires

Alex brings expertise to skate park

Former competitive skateboarder, Alex Bigg, is joining the cause for a skate park in Two Wells. The push for a skate park in Two Wells recently got a big hand up with former competitive skateboarder, Alex Bigg, joining the cause. Twenty-six-year-old Alex currently lives in Greenwith but is building a house in Tangari Estate, Two Wells, and is keen to see a skate park built in the town. An avionics technician in the airforce, Alex skates whenever he can, often travelling long distances for a few hours of fun. “There’s definitely a lack of well built skate parks around,” he said. “It would be really good to have a skate park, especially for the local kids who can’t drive. “And it won’t just be for skaters, it would be for scooters, BXM bikes, whoever wants to use it.” Alex says his experience in helping establish the Yankallila skate park during his youth will go a long way toward getting one built here and hopes to alter the maligned image of skaters in the process, believing the sport has much to offer, especially to youths. “If nothing else it would be

Bec O’Brien reports: really good to increase the awareness of the sport, lots of people think it’s just a hangout with drugs,” he said. “(But) it’s not. It definitely changed my course in life that’s for sure, and it pretty much lined me up. “I know a lot of people who turned to skating as an outlet, a lot of people who weren’t good with ball sports, they’ve found coordination and skills with skating. “I don’t know many people who have tried the sport and not loved it.” With a wealth of knowledge in what does and doesn’t work in skating designs coming from his years competing in skating competitions across the state, Alex hopes to tap into his industry contacts to access funding options and seek out suitable designs. He is teaming up with the Two Wells Regional Action Team and hopes to work with the town’s youths to create something truly unique.

And he’s not afraid to dream big. “If you can make it something different, make it undercover, you could capitalise on the winter conditions, because there’s none in South Australia undercover, there’s nowhere to skate during the winter months. TWRAT president, Eddie Stubing, welcomed Alex’s input into the skate park project, saying his first-hand industry knowledge would be of great benefit. “It’s wonderful what he brings,” he said. “He brings youth, he’s got experience, he’s done it all before. “If he can team up with the TWRAT crowd I feel sure things will progress.” With no formal approval from the District Council of Mallala for a skate park in Two Wells, Alex said this would be a first point of call. He also hopes to arrange a meeting with local youths and skaters to discuss and brainstorm ideas about the skate park. Keep reading the Echo for more developments.

Join our local revival story

L

ast edition I spoke about the understory project that is currently happening. I am glad to say you can take advantage of this project until Monday, June 17, with plant pick up day June 23. For $20 you can purchase 20 native plants indigenous to our region. Be part of this project; your involvement will help restore the endangered peppermint box grassy woodlands that dominated our region pre-European settlement. Since the, our ancestors cleared large areas of these woodlands for farming, resulting in about one per cent still remaining in our region. You could say “so what?” Remember, when you first decided to live here, for a majority of us it wasn’t because our blocks were bare of all vegetation, it was because we saw a vision of growing trees for the kids to climb and the thought of creating our own piece of paradise. This is an opportunity for you to do just that. The plants within the Lewiston Wetlands and Aunger Ponds are a great example of the types of plants that can be purchased through this project. If you have walked through any of these reserves you can see what a difference it makes to our landscapes. Two Wells Echo, May, 2013

The different species of birds that call these reserves home are amazing. As a child, one of my many hobbies I had was collecting and breeding native birds, which I kept in an aviary. As an adult it’s great to see these birds in the wild around me all year long.

With Mark Webb

Planting native plants on your property will provide the resources necessary for our native fauna to move throughout our region. • There are two options when purchasing plants from the understory project. First, you can nominate where you plan to plant the plants and the understory project team will provide you with a pack of selected plants suitable to your site. So, you don’t have to know a lot about plants. When you pick them up they will provide you with fact sheets. Second option is to select plants

you want from a list of more than 50 different species. To place orders, contact the Gawler Regional Natural Resource Centre (NRC) on 8523 7715 or emily.griffiths@sa.gov. au. Or, If you would like to make a specific plant order, visit www. nrcgawler.org.au to access a list of available species. • As many of you would have noticed in recent weeks, a number of people have been dumping rubbish along some of our roads. This not only is unattractive, it can also pose health risks within our community. I believe I am not the only one who is disgusted by the behaviours of some. Yes you could say council will clean it up – but remember who pays the council. We do! Dumping rubbish on the road costs the environment and us a lot more than you think. Report these environmental vandals to your local council. Hi all, we have had a busy last few weeks, with our local CFS brigade responding to various callouts. These include, grass fires, hazardous materials response, structure fire, rubbish burnoffs, car fires and road crash rescues (of which one was quite serious). We have finally had some muchneeded rain and whilst it has laid the dust, we all need to be vigilant and make sure there is a firebreak around any bonfires and rubbish fires that are lit. Remember if you are unsure, check with the local council, they will be more than happy to offer advice. Also when burning, remember, be considerate of your neighbours. Check the weather conditions and wind direction. None of us like to have hung our washing out or to be spending time in the garden only to contend with smoke blowing toward our homes. Our recent recruitment drives have

been fruitful and we have had some new members join up, some of whom have already completed the training course. Other members are also going on to further training, to better serve the brigade and our community. We are still short of members who are able to respond during the day and heavily depend on those few who are available during this time. As ever, we meet for training on Monday nights at 7.30pm with cadets training every other Monday from 6pm to 7.30pm. We are situated on Wells Road opposite the Tavern.

n In a timely reminder as home owners start lighting their winter fires, Bec O’Brien reports: With the colder weather upon us and fires being lit inside homes, one local reader sent through this reminder about fire safety. After lighting their first fire for the season this couple snuggled on the couch and enjoyed a warm evening by the fire. With the fire almost out at bedtime, the lady of the house had a momentary lapse in thinking when, the following afternoon, she cleaned out the fire place

and put the ash and coals in her red council bin. Within half an hour the bin had melted and was on fire. Luckily the bin was not near the house or any structure. CFS brigade captain, Adam Harris, says ash and coals should be fully extinguished before being tipped into a metal bucket and carried out to the bin. He also says now is a good time to ensure fire flues have been cleaned out ready for the winter season ahead. The fire season officially closed on April 30. It will re-open in November.

more than 500 people made up the biggest crowd ever seen at the Two Wells Anzac Day service to honour thousands of fallen Australian soldiers and pay tribute to those currently serving. Cars lined the main street as far back as the cemetery, children were lifted onto shoulders to gain a good vantage point, and residents perched on the surrounding stone wall as Two Wells Returned Services League president, Tony Flaherty, led proceedings. Tony said it was humbling to see such a crowd, especially families and their children, attend the service, saying each year the memorial service had grown in numbers. “It was just fantastic to see so many people there,” he said. “It is an emotional time, they’re really just young men and women, it’s just a tragedy, but that’s why we honor them. “And to see so many children, it was inspiring, they are the future

Current serving soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan also attended the service, as did a number of interstate visitors from Sydney and Victoria. Representing the District Council of Mallala, councillors Mark Wasley and Karen McColl laid a wreath, as did WWII veteran and Two Wells resident, Bill Milton, with many residents also coming forward to pay their respects. Following the service more than 400 “gunfire” breakfast meals of bacon, eggs, toast and beans, plus hot tea and coffee, were served at the Two Wells RSL hall, with the large crowd getting through 27 dozen eggs and more than 25 kilograms of bacon!

hat do a former waiter, a metal musician, and an engineer have in common? They are one and the same in the form of 24-year-old Lewiston resident, Lenard Pederick. Lenard has lived his entire life in the area and attended Two Wells Primary School until Year 2 before completing the rest of his schooling at Trinity College in Gawler. Following this he studied Physics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Adelaide and for the past two years has worked for the Edinburgh-based Defence, Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO). This high-level security compound often sees Lenard contributing to topsecret projects, which of course he cannot reveal! When he’s not working it’s a pretty sure bet Lenard is playing music. Music has been a thread of the fabric of Lenard’s life since he was very young. He started playing piano when he was seven years old and quickly mastered the melodic instrument. The bass guitar, saxophone and guitar, are also instruments Lenard enjoys and he has even taught himself to play the medocia a little – this instrument is a cross between a harmonica and a piano accordion. “Music is really my thing,” Lenard said. “I spend a fair amount of my spare time on it. I listen to a lot of sorts of music but mostly I listen to metal.

Bec O’Brien reports:

“I really just do it because I love it. It’s not something you lose interest in.” Lenard has been a member of numerous bands since he was a teenager and most recently formed “New Paradigm” with some of his friends. The group has recorded an album of their metal-based music, titled “Faultlines” and hopes to release it in June this year. Rehearsing and holding “jam” sessions about once a week, as well as playing the odd gig here and there, keeps Lenard happy. So too does his involvement with the Two Wells Melodrama Group. Lenard started waiting tables at the group’s annual performance in 1994 before word of his musical ability got around and he was invited to join the show’s band. “Playing music is so much fun,” Lenard said. “And this (melodrama) is so different to any other music I play. “We play between 15 and 20 songs in a show and it’s a lot of fun.” The melodrama is a bit of a family affair, with Lenard’s brother, Gerald, helping with front of house duties and also taking to the stage. A member of Two Wells Uniting Church, Lenard is also keenly involved in community events and has helped out at the Fun 4 Kidz Christmas event for the past two years.

n Lewiston resident Lenard Pederick works on top-secret defence projects during the day but loves to play metal music in his spare time.

he face of Two Wells local, Di Allpike, is well known and often seen around town. But sadly she’s heading off to a warmer climate and family in Queensland. Many may know Di as “BP Di” for the years she spent serving and offering a listening ear over the eftpos machine at the service station on Old Port Wakefield Road. Others may recognise her for her work with the Two Wells Regional Action Team and her role as staunch advocate for a skate park for the town. Di famously shaved her head last year to raise funds for the venture and is keen to one day see such a park built here. Others still may remember the days when the Echo was a neatly typed two-page newsletter, with Di at the helm, sourcing, writing and compiling stories. Born and raised in Two Wells, 66-year-old Di has a strong connection with the Adelaide Plains, with her parents buried in the local cemetery.

I’ll definitely miss people like Audrey Hart ... she’s the loveliest person I know. And of course I’ll miss all my friends and the people I have got to know over the years.

Despite periods interstate she and her family, sons Michael and Jason, always returned to Two Wells, It is a place Di has very fond memories of and will miss greatly. “I’ll definitely miss people like Audrey Hart,” she laughed. “She’s the loveliest person I know, and of course I’ll miss all my friends and the people I have got to know over the years. “The whole feel of the community is just wonderful. “They support each other (and) I’ve felt so cared for in

bad times. You wouldn’t get that in other communities.” Di is looking forward to the town developing, saying the feel, commitment and drive of many residents is positive. She is hoping the skate park project will continue to progress and provide a muchneeded outlet for young people in the community, and is adamant the proposed Hickinbotham housing development will not have a detrimental effect. “Two Wells is not dying, it’s coming alive,” she enthused. “It’s taken a lot of work to make this town vibrant and we’ve still got a way to go yet, but things are happening. “People need to get out there and get involved – it’s your community. “Don’t sit back and wait for things to happen because they won’t. We need people to get involved.” A great parting message Di – all in the best in sunny Queensland, we hope you’ll keep up-to-date with all the Two Wells happenings by reading the Echo at www. twowellsecho.com.au! Seven-year-old Two Wells Scout Group Joey member, Lockie Green, received his Promise Badge from leader Amanda “Gecko” Vanree last month.

Lockie joins Scouts and earns his first badge A Scout is trustworthy. A Scout is loyal. A Scout is helpful, friendly, cheerful and considerate. A Scout is thrifty. A Scout is courageous and respectful. A Scout cares for the environment. This is the Scout Law, something all members promise to live by. Seven-year-old Two Wells Scout Group Joey member, Lockie Green, showed he has these qualities and more when he was presented with the “Promise” badge last month. Throughout each level of Scouts, members work towards developing friendships, confidence, skills and understanding about a range of topics to attain particular badges. The Promise badge is designed to challenge older Joey Scouts to gain a greater understanding of the Scout Promise and Law and to also learn about the group’s founder, Sir Robert Baden-Powell. For Lockie it meant doing a lot of research and giving a presentation to fellow scouters as well as thinking about ways to help others in the community. Two Wells Scout Group leader Amanda “Gecko” Vanree surprised Lockie last month and presented him with his badge and certificate.

Keep up to date with local events from Two Wells, Lewiston, Virginia and the Adelaide Plains each week in the

Regular columns featured on this page, and more

A FEW dramas have caught my eye in recent weeks, two standing out as more than watchable shows on a regular basis. At long last I tuned in to an episode of “Elementary”, screened Sunday nights on Channel 10. The show is predominantly a modern day Sherlock Holmes drama, featuring characters such as Sherlock Holmes, played by Jonny Lee Miller, and Dr Joan Watson, portrayed by Lucy Liu. The pair work in tandem to solve complicated crimes with sumptuous twists, as should be expected of a Sherlock Holmes style story. I enjoyed the first episode and will reserve full judgement until I’ve seen a few but on the one tasting, I found it rather enjoyable. “Elementary” is relatively light-hearted and has some comical moments, predominantly through the antics of Holmes.

Another show I had a look at during the week was “Hannibal”, which debuted on the Seven Network on Wednesday night. Now, a bit of parental guidance wouldn’t go astray here, as this show is not for young, impressionable minds. Given most viewers out there would have a vague understanding of the sort of character Dr Hannibal Lecter is, let’s just say the series follows that theme relatively closely. Each episode is a weekly instalment of murder mysteries, with the background story continuing throughout. The background story predominantly focuses on the budding relationship between FBI special investigator, Will Graham, and Dr Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist. Wikipedia describes the “Hannibal” version of Graham as “on the Asperger’s side of the

autism spectrum”. “He possesses ‘pure empathy’ and an overactive imagination, allowing him to mentally recreate the murders he is investigating.” At times, the recreating of the murders in his mind can be fairly graphic and even some of the scenes throughout the show tend to be a bit confronting. But the somewhat sadistic viewer within me seems to crave more of the strange relationship between Lecter and Graham, as they work together in the kookiest of ways to solve crime. Anyway, if you enjoyed the Hannibal movies, the TV series won’t let you down, with the actors delivering truly believable characters and a generally gripping narrative. Not something to watch before dinner though, as it will kill the appetite. Pun intended.

Tracey rides for Cancer research Report by Julie Laughton APEC publicity officer

the Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club supported our treasurer, Tracey Smith, as she took part in the Cancer Council’s fundraising event “Relay For Life”, held Sunday March 24. APEC members and their horses spent the entire day taking turns to ride laps of the track around Hamm Park, Lewiston. There was a great turnout of riders and supporters of all ages, and those riding certainly worked up a good appetite for the barbeque lunch and dinner. All horses and riders went home tired, but were proud to have taken

part in such a worthwhile cause. Through sponsorship and donations, APEC helped raise $655 for cancer research in Australia. Well done to everyone involved. The club looks forward to trying to raise even more money next year - so get training everyone! Upcoming APEC events include a farrier information session on May 19, and a Mount Crawford Forest ride on June 23.

Cross country course delivers for one-day riders • From back page “Well done and thankyou to Marcus Richardson and Rebecca Puro for the use of their property and to the Puro family for their committment in bringing this event back to Two Wells.” TWE&PC president, Pentti Puro, designed and built the events crosscountry course, constructing more than 80 jumps in the process, and a team of volunteers stepped up to help as jump judges, marshals, timers and gear checkers. Rebecca said the support from the wider equestrian world had been amazing, saying the event would not have happened without their help. Two Wells Echo, May, 2013

“We couldn’t have done it without them, there were so many volunteers and they weren’t only just from our clubs,” she said. “The help that came from the other clubs, and from a broad range of equestrian disciplines, the support that was given to us, it was just fantastic, they all wanted this event to go ahead and succeed.” Events coming up at the club include a Dressage Competition day on June 1 and a Derby and Showjumping day on June 9. Contact Pentti Puro on 0409609600 for details. • Results next issue of the Echo

Two Wells Golf Club started its 2013 winter season on April 6, with a classic stableford event. The opening day kicked off with the customary shotgun start, with long-time members Adam Bail, Ian Clark and Jeoff Spackman taking the honour of being the first group off the first tee. The course, which was quite dry and dusty, will certainly benefit from the good rains recently. Despite this, the course has produced some great golf and even more fun and friendly banter between players over the opening few weeks of the season. Bobby Hogg, Adam Bail, Gary Payne and Hans Linford have set the standard with multiple placings in the three Saturday rounds so far, and it has been good to see a few ladies out on Saturday playing too. Members at Two Wells are quite proud of their course, with the opening six holes set into the State Reserve and they are quite tight and testing, with straight shots necessary and plenty of trees to cope with if players stray off-line. The course then opens up with some longer holes, but still with plenty of the trees to catch the hooks and slices. The hardest hole is the par 5, 546-metre ninth, with a tight second shot over a tree in the middle of the fairway and then narrowing down on approach to the scrape. This hole has only been lengthened in the last couple of years and has certainly hit players hard again this year. If you would like to join us and try and tame our challenging little course, visit the club any Saturday. Golf starts at 11am with tee-offs until around 12.30pm, and everyone in before 5pm for presentation of the day’s prizes and a chance to take home the much sought after Virginia Meat Store meat tray raffles. Ladies also play on Tuesdays around 9.15am and new members are always welcome. The men have a Wednesday competition from 9.15am, usually followed by a BBQ lunch and a couple of beers. Two Wells Golf Club’s website, www.twowellsgolfclub.com.au, has a wealth of information about the course, competitions, membership and everything you need to know. Come out and play! A quick reminder to members that the handicap matchplay draw is now on the website. Captain and President’s Trophy competitions kick off this month, and get ready for the bi-annual Hamley Bridge Challenge on May 25 at Hamley Bridge. Good golfing everyone. Riders test new course

Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club hosted its inaugural oneday event in April, but with more than 100 riders taking part and a purpose-built cross-country course, it didn’t dampen enthusiasm. After a hiatus of more than 10 years from the one-day event circuit due to a lack of space, the Two Wells event saw competitors from across the state battle hot weather, strong winds and a little rain on the weekend of April 27 and 28. Riders took their horses through dressage, cross-country and show jumping events, with people from as far afield as Port Augusta, the Riverland, Meadows and the Yorke Peninsula, as well as those from surrounding areas including Williamstown, Gawler River and the Barossa taking part. TWE&PC committee member, Rebecca Puro, said the whole event was a great success and the committee was already thinking about next year’s event and how to make

Great ‘family feel’

Bec O’Brien reports:

it bigger and better. “It went so well, despite the awful weather on Saturday,” she said. “We had a lot of positive feedback, and the riders are all saying they want to come back next year. “Everyone said they were wrapped with the course, saying it flowed and it rode well. “We definitely want to go again next year.” The event catered for riders from Pony Club Grade 5 and Open levels up to pre-Novice and Grade 1 levels, with former Olympian and South Australian equine identity, Gillian Rolton, attending. “Well done on a super event… congratulations to the Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club team for getting this new event onto the calendar and doing a great job,” Gillian commented. n Continued page 15

Recently I went to the Two Wells football oval to watch my grandson play in the Under 8 football team. I have lived in Two Wells since 1970. From the mid-70s, my children all played sport. Saturdays were filled with going and coming to be in the right place, right time and wearing the right clothes. The parents were involved and we all helped each other. We were all convinced that if our children spent the weekends playing sport, they would be too busy or tired to get into trouble. I was very grateful for those times and also to the people who gave up many hours so the children of our community could take part. As I watched the game last week, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of pride in the families of the next generation of this sport-

ing community. There they were – the children of the 70s and 80s all grown up and handing on to the next generation their knowledge and skills. They made sure every child was involved by moving the boys around so they could all get a share of the action. They were very encouraging, patient, and also taught protocols – how to play the game and good sportsmanship. It was also great to see the ‘off field’ activities such as canteen and support etc. were also in full swing. Two Wells Football/Netball Sporting Club has an excellent family “feel” about it and I congratulate everyone who is involved. It gives me a great sense of hope for our future generation. – Rae Wilson, Two Wells
