Flying high for reconciliation Two Wells Primary School celebrated Reconciliation Week last month with a range of activities including the release of 300 red balloons as part of the celebrations. TWPS counselor, Judy Sanders, said the theme of this year’s reconciliation week was “Let’s Talk Recognition” and the students had been involved in story telling, literacy activities, cooking damper and creating artwork, with the balloon release held on Friday, May 31. The balloons were tied the students in support of reconciliation. “The students had a wonderful week,” Judy said. “They’ve been very busy doing lots of activities in the classroom and learnt a lot about different cultural experiences in their curriculum.” Kaurna Aboriginal elder, Aunty Josie, also visited the school during the week to share her experiences. Tomato chutney, made with produce from the school’s community garden, was incorporated into the damper-making activity and students also got to try a burger made from kangaroo mince.

A near record crowd of youngsters turned out for last month’s Blue Light Disco in Two Wells. Around 220 kids hit the dance floor at the Two Wells Community Centre last Friday, May 31, with a few lucky ones snapping up some great prizes including an iPod shuffle and a camera. War memorial upgrade

A long-awaited upgrade of the Two Wells war memorial will start this month. The upgrade will pay tribute to those who have served in Afghanistan and feature new paving, planting boxes and plaques. The staged project is fully funded by the local RSL group and is expected to be completed by Anzac Day 2014. The Two Wells RSL wishes to highlight support, guidance and encouragement from the District Council of Mallala, including planning and horticultural staff, has made the project possible.

Long-awaited remediation of Salt Creek at Middle Beach has taken a big step forward, with the formation of a council-backed working party to push the project. The District Council of Mallala voted at its May 27 meeting to commit two councillors and some staff resources to the working party, which will also comprise representatives from the Two Wells Regional Action Team and Mallala Foreshore Advisory Committee and potentially a university or industry representative. Middle beach shack owner, TWRAT and MFAC member, John Drexel, believes the establishment of the working party is a win for the future use and health of the creek and for the people of the district. “It’s an absolute relief,” Mr Drexel said. “We’re all rapt that at last we might be able to move forward to try to put the beach back to the way it was for use by the whole of the northern Adelaide Plains area.” Historically Salt Creek was used by the local community for recreational purposes but over time silting of the creek has reduced these activities including

The State government recently announced a new plan for the north of Adelaide, which suggests 38,000 new homes will be built over the next 30 years in the area. Its Playford Growth Area Structure Plan will also see 100,000 new residents brought to the communities of Angle Vale, Virginia, Buckland Park, Edinburgh and Playford North and hundreds of potential jobs created. While the District Council of Mallala was not mentioned in the plan, the region will no doubt be affected by such a population growth. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said he had not looked in depth at the plan but welcomed the flow-on possibility of population growth and possible jobs for the region. “We will be considering the proposed plan for the Playford growth structure plan and its implications in more detail in coming weeks,” he said. “If council feels it needs to put in a submission to the state government, then we will.” The expansion could possibly see the largely Virginia-based horti-

In 2010 DCM invested funds to upgrade the boat ramp facilities but has struggled to maintain the boat ramps due to continual silting. Mr Drexel believes the work of the Salt Creek working party will benefit not only the immediate creek but also council and other industry groups. “We’d like to, if it’s at all feasible, to involve university students in the project to see what the effects the remediation will have on the creek flow,” he said. “We’ll need surveying, environmental management etcetera, so that’s a win-win. “The students get a real life project to use in their studies and we get the results we need to carry out the remediation work. “As a byproduct we can use the material coming out of the creek for levies and maybe even the construction of a second car park, which will save money because we’re using local products.” Mr Drexel said the working party hoped to raise the profile of the area not only for its Middle Beach residents but also for

She said more than 30,000 postcards would soon be delivered to residents encouraging them to be involved in the consultation process. “I am encouraging everyone who lives or works in the local community to have a say on what they want for our area,” Mrs Vlahos stated. “Education services, public transport, emergency services, health care and recreation will all need to be considered for future developments. “Providing employment opportunities is an essential part of the plan.” Maps and fact sheets on the Playford Growth Area Structure Plan can be found at www.dpti. sa.gov.au/planning/playfordgrowth. Through this site residents can also register to be kept up to date with what is happening with the plan as it progresses. Mr Mansueto said the growing horticulture industry was important for the region in that it could possibly provide hundreds of local jobs. Mr Mansueto said DCM was already working with nearby councils, including Salisbury, Playford, Light and Gawler councils as part of the Northern Adelaide Regional Collaboration to promote the northern region. “We’re all facing the same pressures,” he said.

his month marks just over six months since the District Council of Mallala appointed a new mayor in Lewiston councilor, Duncan Kennington. He will be one of the last mayors to be elected by a panel of his peers, as the council changes to a community-elected mayor at the 2014 elections. Bec O’Brien chatted with Mr Kennington about what the first half of his term has been like, what challenges he sees ahead for council, and discussed some of the priorities he has for the district. n his first six months as mayor, Mr Kennington has so far seen the role as both challenging and rewarding. In his sixth year as a councillor, the last before this as deputy mayor, Mr Kennington says his time at the “helm” has definitely been a big learning curve. Members of the public will have easier access to a community vehicle following the District Council of Mallala’s successful application to the Mid North Community Passenger Transport Network (MNCPTN). DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said a vehicle would soon be based at council’s Mallala depot, giving residents who currently have no access to a car more options. The MNCPTN have cars based in other towns which are available five days a week and are driven by volunteers, but this would be the first time a car was based locally. Eligible residents may be taken to medical appointments, shopping and other social activities (conditions apply). • Bookings are essential and can be made by contacting the Mid North Community Passenger Transport Network on 8842 1677. Straight A’s for kindy kids A lot has been happening at the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre over the past month. The children have been busy playing with the Asian themed tea set in the newly refurbished home corner and childcare children have been focussing on the letter “A”.

They have been doing lots of artwork, stories and activities to support their learning. The children also helped chop herbs, which were picked from the centre’s garden, to add to bread made in the bread maker for afternoon tea. It was delicious. Yum!

new Gawler and Districts College. The school’s governing council chairperson, David Heintze, ably leads them, and is also team mechanic. He is supported by a small but dedicated band of parent volunteers. The first Pedal Prix event for the year was a six-hour challenge at Victoria Park in Adelaide on Saturday, June 1. The team will compete in three events throughout the year, including a 24-hour ride at Murray Bridge in September. Former AVPS student, 13-year-old Kelly Donnelly, is an “old-hand” at the Pedal Prix and relishes the skills and fitness the competition gives her. “The 24-hour event is

the best,” she enthused. “We get to ride right through the night. “It’s a lot of fun and good fitness.” David says the events are challenging for the students but also very rewarding. During the 24-hour event students take it in turns to ride laps of a 2.2km course, with some hitting speeds of up to 30km/h. Teams are scored on how many laps they can complete in the set timeframe. “It’s about working together as a team,” David said. “At the events they spend all their time together, helping each other out. It’s great to see them get out there and have fun.” The next Pedal Prix event will be held on July 27 at Victoria Park in Adelaide.

Anew childrens’centre, junior school, oval and library are key elements of a major redevelopment which has created the Gawler and District College Birth – 12, catering for more than 1000 students in Adelaide’s north. Officially opening the college on Sunday, May 19, Premier Jay Weatherill said the $12 million project brings early childhood learning, junior and senior schooling together on the one site for the first time, providing a focus for community activity. The new children’s centre has 45 preschool places and 15 occasional care places, as well as health services facilities. Alongside is a new Reception to Year 2 facility with toilets and a new Year 3 to Year 6 facility with toilets. The redevelopment follows the closure of the Evanston Primary and Preschool and the

Two Wells Melodrama Group has raised $30,000 for local community groups after another successful season wrapped up last month. The group performed a reprisal of the old classic, “One Hump or Two”, which was first performed in 1987. The Les Williams feature took the audience to an Arabian desert where the cast of belly dancers, sheiks, British soldiers and even a snake charmer delighted with bright, colourful costumes, classic singing solos and duets, all sprinkled with a good dose of humour – and the occasional audience heckler! The original script was tweaked by director Eleisha Arbon, cast member Jess Renaglia, and life member Mark Boon to showcase the many talents of the current cast, which remarkably included three who performed in the original production all those years ago! For those in the audience the show was a blast and the accompanying three-course menu was a treat, as usual. Reflecting the desert-themed performance, the menu included camel (beef) pie and golden syrup dumplings (one hump or two!), and was capably and efficiently served by a team of local volunteers. All funds raised from the event are ploughed back into the community and over the years the Two Wells Melodrama Group has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to local groups. TWMG cast member and director, Eleisha Arbon, said the show had been well received and the group was already looking forward to next year. “There were wonderful performances by all on stage and hardworking backstage people,” she said. “A lot of people put in a lot of work behind the

scenes in the kitchen, bar, waiting on tables and preparing the hall each day. “It is a great community event that is unique to the Two Wells community and everyone involved put in a huge effort, so, thank you.” With this year’s performance done and dusted the cast and crew can all take a much-earned breather before re-grouping to stage the much anticipated comedy show later in the year.

Are you a parent, grandparent or carer of a pre-schooler? Are you looking for something to do with your little one and have a liking for books? Then head to the Two Wells Public Library for the centre’s new Toddler Read and Rhyme sessions led by library assistant and Two Wells local, Di Henwood. Established earlier this year, the sessions are informal and are held on the first Wednesday of each month from 9.30am to 10.30am. Di leads the group in reading a few books, often around a themed topic, or upcoming event, before the kids can get hands-on in a craft activity. Parents and caregivers have the opportunity to chat and share stories while at the same time engage in meaningful activities with the children. New chapter starts with book club If you are an avid reader or love to discuss different authors, book genres and character plots, then the newly established Two Wells Book Club might just be for you. Held in the Two Wells Public Library every first Wednesday of the month from 5.30pm to 6.30pm, the book club has been long awaited by some local residents, with members driving from Redbanks and Lower Light to take part in the monthly book review and discussion. Customer and library services coordinator, Anne Sawtell, established the club as a way for residents to share a love of books and has been pleased by the interest shown by the community. While initially Anne chose the first book to review, “Mercy” by Jodi Picoult, each member of the group will have an

Golfers triumph in Hamley challenge By TWGC handicapper, Russell Grigg The last month of golf has culminated in Two Wells triumphing in the bi-annual Hamley Bridge / Two Wells Challenge. The Hamley course was in beautiful condition and looked a treat. Twenty players fronted from Two Wells, which was very pleasing. Club president, Chris Girling, put together a fine 71 off of the stick, scored 41 points and five birdies to easily be the best Two Wells player on the day. After all the players had finished and scores tallied, it was established Two Wells had won the day with an average of 33.7 to Hamley 31.8 – the first time Two Wells has beaten them on their turf. All had a great day and we sincerely thank Hamley for their hospitality. We have no doubt they will be trying their hardest to knock us off in the return match at Two Wells on August 10.

• With the course back home coming to life from the recent rains so has player of the last month, John Boon. Boony has played beautifully, winning twice, runner-up once, winning the Bob Oxlade Memorial Trophy with a fine net 61, which saw him take out Ian Smith 7/5 in handicap matchplay, lose 4 strokes from his handicap and was in fine form on Facebook letting Neil and Jake Bowden know all about his exploits. There has also been some consistent form from Adam Bail, Robert Hogg, Hans Linford and Gary Payne too, which sees them all just a point or two behind Boony in the club trophy points. •The ladies on Tuesdays have been going strong with captain Elaine Grigg dominating the first five weeks by winning four times. Aileen Oliver did burst her bubble by defeating her in handicap match

Despite nature putting on a rain show, a dedicated band of Two Wells ladies served morning tea as part of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea event on Friday May 31. Organised by Two Wells Uniting Church, the morning tea had to be scaled back due to the inclement weather and a trading table was staged under the verandah in front of the local supermarket (thanks Rosa and Rocky!). The hardworking volunteers helped street traffic pick out yummy cakes, delicious biscuits, books, knitted goods and much more, and raised just over $500. The group hopes to stage another event on Friday June 14 (weather permitting), where they will offer pancakes and a sausage sizzle as well as other baked goods. All funds raised go to the Cancer Council.

Ivy Martha Southgate (Applebee) nee Boxer 1918 – 2013

vy Martha Boxer was born on March 16, 1918, at Hilltown, South Australia. The family later moved to Gawler where Ivy spent her childhood. She was always a hard worker and did many different jobs in her long life. Ivy married a Two Wells boy, Ronald Applebee, in 1941 and they settled in Two Wells and had three boys, Raymond, Desmond and Geoffrey. The boys all eventually became policemen in South Australia. Ivy drove the mail truck for many years, delivering mail to the towns north of Two Wells. She also helped Ron, who managed a milk round, picking up milk from farmers in the area and delivering it to the milk depots. Always a physically strong person, Ivy had no problem lumping the heavy milk cans. Later, Ron was stationed at Mallala in the airforce, during World War II. Ivy became an enemy ‘Aircraft Spotter’. A facility was built opposite the Aboriginal wells, now known as the Two Wells ‘Wells’ area, which was a sandbagged structure with a roof and walls, on which there were pictures of the different aircraft of the day. While Ivy was busy doing all this, she also had ‘boarders’living with her and Ron – sometimes up to four. Many a schoolteacher found her living quarters here whilst teaching at the local primary school. She could even turn her hand to hairdressing and many a local lady sat in her kitchen and had their hair cut, permed or set in the style of the day. Ivy was a great sportswoman. She played netball (then known as basketball) from 1937 until 1957, and then went on to umpire. During this time she was also president of the netball club for quite a few years and many Two

Wells premierships were won under her leadership. She was made a life member of the Two Wells Netball Club in 1987. During summer, Ivy loved to play tennis. She began playing competitively in 1937 and continued at No.1 until her retirement in 1970. She was a brilliant player and very few could beat her. For many years she was No. 1 player in the country v city team in the annual tennis country carnival at Memorial Drive. When the new Two Wells District Tennis Club was formed in 1948, Ivy was the first secretary and held that position for two years, then went on to be a committee member until her retirement from tennis. Ivy was a tireless worker for the tennis club, always maintaining the courts area and clubhouse in immaculate condition and making sure there was a good supply of rainwater brought from her house to make a cup of tea on match days!

In 1960 Ivy joined Two Wells Bowling Club and she also quickly became a champion in this sport (even whilst maintaining her number 1 position in the tennis club for a further 10 years). Over the next 50 years she was club champion on four occasions and runner-up five times.In the Wooroora Women’s Bowling Association, she won the association fours, triples, pairs and super Veteran pairs on six occasions. Ivy was Two Wells Bowls Club president from 1987-90 and again from 1998-2000 and also president of the Past President Association. In her latter years she often played bowls for the men when they were short of players. In all, she was a great ambassador for bowling and believed the social fellowship of the sport which brings the community together to be more important than winning Ivy was widowed in 1979. She remarried in 1988, to Alan Southgate and they moved into the senior citizen homes in Two Wells. They kept themselves very busy managing the gardens of the bowling club and around the Uniting church. Sadly, Alan passed away in 2008, but Ivy kept on relentlessly and even when she was in her late eighties you would see her out digging and weeding around the town. Never one to be idle, she also worked for Blind Welfare. Ivy was a ‘no frills, no fuss’ person, with an honest and simple approach to life, who generously contributed her heart and soul for her family and Two Wells community. Her motto was ‘hard work’and this, she pursued, to the end, when she lost her battle with cancer on April 24, 2013 at Lyell McEwen Hospital at the age of 95, with family at her side. R.I.P. Ivy. Pyjama party! Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club hosted a PJ party on May 11. The night was well attended, with everyone taking the opportunity to come dressed down in their pyjamas and ugg boots. The most popular outfit for the night was the onesie, which was worn by the majority of people. The club raised quite a bit of money on the night, which will go towards future functions and help with the building of the new clubrooms. The next event to be held at the sporting club is themed “Heroes and Villains”, which is on Saturday June 22 at 8pm. Come dressed as your favourite hero or villain and help support the club. Look out for flyers closer to the event for more details. Due to last year’s success, the club is hosting another Open Mic Night on Saturday July 27, with location and time to be advised. Please stay on the designated paths so we can all appreciate the native vegetation of our region. Our environmental assets are worth protecting. • I recently joined a party of volunteers at the Gawler Cinema celebrating Volunteer Week, which was organised by the Mallala Council. It was great to see so many enthusiastic people and to learn about some of the projects that they are involved with within our community. With more than six million volunteers Australia wide I doubt our region/country would function as good as it does without them. I am confident you don’t have to look far to find someone who volunteers within a community. Volunteers make a difference to our way of life, from the local Blue Light disco to the Landcare volunteers throughout every community. Sporting club prepares for expansion

“There was movement at the station for the word had passed around….” or so the well-known AB Patterson verse goes but it’s not quite the same for the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club’s much anticipated clubroom upgrade – despite some action taking place. Like me, you may have been wondering when work would start on the club’s desperately needed improvements. And like me, you may also have noticed the large palm trees at the rear of the building were removed recently, perhaps paving the way for construction to start on the long-awaited project. But we may have to wait a few months more as official planning approval has not yet been granted. TWF&NSC president, Francis Pellizzari, said while the palm trees were removed in May, the club was still waiting for a final engineers report before it could seek final development approval from the District Council of Mallala. “It was an important stage for us (the removal of the palm trees) in terms of us getting as prepared as we can be before we formally commence the project,” Francis said. “But the critical thing is, concurrently with seeking development approval with the council, we will be finalising our development costings.” Once the club has the final costs

sorted, it would be seeking assistance for the project from members, families and local tradies, he said. The project will see the clubrooms undergo a major makeover, with an extended dining area to the south, new bar and kitchen facilities, back access from the netball courts, improved office space, cool-room and storeroom, plus new toilet and showering amenities, bigger football change rooms and an area for umpires and trainers as well as a cricket storeroom. With the project now behind schedule, Francis said work on the southern end of the building would commence first once development approval had been granted. “The plan is for us to do the southern end of the development first because that will have the lesser impact on the existing clubrooms,” he said. “And we have been nominated to host the grand final next year. “For the first time since we joined this association, in 1987, we will host a grand final, so that’s a bit of an incentive for us to finish.” The club is in the process of finalising to sell pavers to the general public with names engraved on them to raise funds and give members, supporters, families and individuals the opportunity to contribute. Young athletes Year six and seven students from Two Wells Primary School recently participated in SAPSASA swimming, football and netball. The annual primary school sports carnivals were held last month at a range of venues across Adelaide, including the state of the art South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre at Marion, Netball SA Stadium and football fields at West Beach.
