V ED! L O S The case of the missing cockroach Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello makes a new friend.

Bec O’Brien reports:

It was said to be a mystery, or perhaps a theft; how a six-foot high sculpture of a cockroach weighing more than 500kg could magically up and vanish from its home along Port Wakefield Road, Lower Light, where it has presided for the past 15 years. But it’s no mystery, there’s been no thieving in the night and it’s all turned out rather well for the future of the iconic “political art” sculptures of nearby Dublin. The cockroach figure was removed by members of the Two Wells Regional Action Team at the request of the landholder, due to concerns about people climbing fences to get a better look and traffic being The iconic cockroach statue of Lower Light will be restored following a donation by the state hindered along the busy highway. government. DUNCAN Kennington was reelected District Council of Mallala mayor after an election almost decided by the simple, schoolyard action of pulling a name from a hat. Luckily it didn’t come to that – but District Council of Mallala’s vote for mayor at its meeting on Monday night (November 25) was definitely eventful and drawn out, with three councillors putting their name forward for the top leadership role. And the absence of Lewiston ward councillor Anne Picard threw a spanner in the works, creating a tied vote on a number of motions relating to the mayoral vote, including what form the vote was to be taken in. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, chaired the meeting and had to suspend proceedings on three separate occasions to seek clarification and legal advice. In the past, DCM has voted for its mayor by a show of hands but this year three different methods were put forward; first, voting by a show of hands, which had a tied vote of 5-5; second, a secret ballot, which resulted in a tied vote of 5-5 and third, a preferential secret ballot, which was lost 4-6. Cr Kennington then put forward the original motion of councillors electing a mayor by a show of hands, which was carried with a vote of 6-4. n Continued Page 2

“Cosi” Costello, of television show ‘South Aussie with Cosi’ fame, via Facebook and he immediately set about hunting it down. South Australian tourism minister, Leon Bignell, has even become involved, pledging $1000 to a “fighting” fund to restore the cockroach when he met with TWRAT members, statue creator Steve Jones and a few locals on Wednesday November 20. “There’s so much love for the cockroach and we consider these statues a really important series of icons in the state,” Mr Bignell said. “It’s really important we keep these things, we’ve had a whole generation grow up with it all.” Mr Bignell said he was not aware of too many other political satire art forms in Australia and these sculptures had stood the test of time. “There’s not too many examples of this in Australia, it’s a great tribute to the resilience of the local community and the passion they felt and it’s important from an art point of view and a tourism perspective.”

“Cosi” was tongue in cheek about having bought the cockroach for two slabs of beer, and said once restored they would hopefully spend a bit of time in Rundle Mall for all South Australians and visitors to admire before being donated back to the state. “I grew up watching these statues pop up,” he said. “As a dad I’m sharing the same thing with my kids, so naturally I want to see them looked after.” Cosi said the Facebook posting was shared 12,000 times in its first 48 hours, more than 300,000 had read it and 10,000 had “liked” it. Sculpture creator, and District Council of Mallala Dublin ward councillor, Steve Jones, said it was fantastic news the future of the statue had been secured. TWRAT vice president, Bev SmithTrim, said while the outcome for the statue had been positive, she was disappointed someone from the area had gone straight to the media about their concerns rather than asking for an explanation from TWRAT.

Mayor’s vote a test of patience • From Page 1 Nominated for the position of mayor were Lewiston ward councillors Duncan Kennington and Karen McColl, and Two Wells ward councillor, Mark Wasley. With a show of hands, Cr Kennington secured five votes, Cr McColl four votes and Cr Wasley one vote. At this point Cr Wasley was eliminated from the election and councillors were asked to vote between Cr Kennington

and Cr McColl, which resulted in a tied vote of 5-5. Councillors Wasley, Heley, McColl, Strudwicke and Howard all voted in favour of Cr McColl as mayor. Councillors Kennington, Daniele, Jones, Keen and Summerton voted in support of Cr Kennington. Reading from the Local Government Associations’ electoral guidelines, Mr Mansueto advised councillors in the

event of a tied result the two names were to be put into a hat and the first name pulled out would lose the election, meaning the name left in the hat would be named mayor. Many councillors were horrified such an important decision was left to, as it were, luck of the draw and Mr Mansueto adjourned the meeting to clarify his understanding of the guidelines. Mr Mansueto returned to advise councillors the guidelines were not clear and legal advice should be sought. The meeting was again adjourned while he contacted DCM’s lawyers, who advised the guidelines were correct and Mr Mansueto then suggested to councillors the “first past the post” method was the correct process to use. Cr Strudwicke then called a point of order in relation to the previous resolution of council as an indicative vote not an election, saying he thought the lowest vote

recipient should be eliminated and a re-vote taken for the two remaining candidates. For the third time the meeting was adjourned as Mr Mansueto spoke to legal advice, which suggested the process of “first past the post” was implied in the motion of a vote by a show of hands, meaning Cr Kennington was first preference on five votes, Cr McColl second preference on four votes. Cr Kennington moved he be appointed mayor, a motion seconded by Cr Jones and carried with a vote of 6-4. Electing the deputy mayor position went through a similar process as that of the mayor with respect to which method to use for the voting, with Cr Strudwicke moving a motion in favour of a preferential vote, which resulted in a tied vote of 5-5. He then moved a motion to appoint Cr McColl as deputy mayor but she declined to accept the

position and the motion was lost 2-8. Cr Keen nominated Cr Wasley for the deputy mayor position, which he accepted, and he was appointed unopposed. This was the last year DCM councillors elected the mayor, with the vote being put in the hands of local constituents at the 2014 council elections next November. At the conclusion of the meeting, mayor for the second year running, Duncan Kennington, said he was excited about the year ahead. Mr Kennington said he had learnt a lot about the district and its people and he was looking forward to strengthening those relationships by attending community events, businesses forums and meetings.

Reprimand for councillor

DISTRICT Council of Mallala councillor, Steve Jones, was unfazed by a report from State Ombudsman, Richard Bingham, which found Cr Jones had twice breached conflict of interest provisions earlier this year. As a result, Cr Jones received a slap on the wrist from the Ombudsman, the elected member ordered to attend a conflict of interest training session. Cr Jones has played down the breaches as minor indiscretions. “On a level of seriousness, I have to undertake an hour’s training,” Cr Jones said. “If the issue was so serious, well, the punishment would fit the seriousness, would it?” The issue itself is a complex background of previous alleged breaches and reports from the Ombudsman dating back to May, 2012, relating to public comments to the media. Cr Jones was to attend the required training session on November 25.

Two Wells Red Cross raised around $1000 following a successful fashion parade on November 19. Held at the local Catholic Church hall, 40 people attended including Long Plains Red Cross members, residents from Virginia as well as many locals. The event was in support of this year’s Two Wells Red Cross baby entrant, ninemonth-old Chloe Taylor and featured clothing apparel from Trade Winds of Gawler. TWRC president, Val Vercoe praised the models, Maria Pellizzari, Helen Sims, Rosemary Howell and Julie Harford for their wonderful efforts, saying a great time was had by all. “I thought it went off very well and everybody enjoyed themselves, it was excellent,” Val said. Reward for planning team

Two Wells growth strategy recognised

District Council of Mallala has been recognised for its partnership and process for planning at the 2013 Planning Institute Australia (SA Division) awards for Planning Excellence announced on Friday, November 8. The PIA awards were held at the Sebel Playford on World Town Planning Day and recognise, reward and celebrate outstanding planning achievements. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto said the council nominated two projects; the Two Wells Growth Planning Framework (TWGPF), with the Hickinbotham Group and Connor Holmes, and the Strategic Directions Report – Development Plan Review, with URPS. The Framework won the Improving Planning Processes and Practices Award category, which recognises the achievements of planners, planning authorities and development entities in translating good planning policy into improved processes and practices in the workplace and ‘on the ground’. “As the planning system struggles to plan and deliver urban growth areas across Greater Adelaide, there is much to be learnt from the growth planning framework and the partnership approach that has been used at Two Wells,” Mr Mansueto said. “The judges noted the planning and implementation framework ‘provides a model of integrated land use, infrastructure and environmental planning with comprehensive

community engagement throughout’. “It also boasts exemplary early engagement with key infrastructure bodies, including social infrastructure agencies such as education and health. “The framework also benefited from sophisticated place making community engagement undertaken by Village Well at the project’s commencement”. Mr Mansueto said the judges commented the use of an economic modelling tool is a first for South Australia in the way it assesses council and developer contributions to the project. Minister for Planning, John Rau, also acknowledged the TWGPF with a Certificate of Commendation. The award and commendation were ac-

cepted by DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington and Hickinbotham’s Two Wells project manager, Ruth Vagnarelli. “The awards are a positive recognition for District Council of Mallala, its community, and all who have been involved with the project since its inception,” Mr Kennington said. Hickinbotham Group’s Two Wells project manager, Ruth Vagnarelli, said the award win was acknowledgment of the successful collaboration between state government, local council, the community and developers, noting the expansion hoped to create more than 3000 regional jobs over the next 20 years. “The collaboration and partnership between the Hickinbotham Group, District Council of Mallala, State government and, importantly,

the community, helped shape the Two Wells Growth Planning Framework,” Ms Vagnarelli said. “This best-practice Framework will guide the township’s expansion and help ensure growth complements the existing town and region. To win the ‘Improving Planning Processes and Practices Award’ as well as receive a Certificate of Commendation from the Planning Minister is a testament and credit to all involved. “We commend council for its ongoing commitment to Two Wells to ensure growth is well-managed and co-ordinated with local jobs and local services as the community grows.” The Two Wells residential development project is set to begin next year.

Lana’s quilt helps cover the cost of restoration The Two Wells Court House Restoration Project has been given a boost following the donation of a hand-made Sashiko quilt valued at $1200. And this beautiful piece could be yours, with the Craft Shop staging a silent auction to raise funds for the restoration of the exterior of the heritage-listed courthouse building. Lewiston resident, Lana Barrett – who is a member of the Quilters Guild in Gawler and has been sewing since she was four years old – took six months to complete the piece. The intricate style of Sashiko is the Japanese art of quilting and dates back to the 18th century, where the style was originally designed for strengthening a single layer of fabric. Lana has been perfecting the Sashiko style for the past two years. “I like the effect and how easy it is to do,” she explained. “The designs and the history behind this type of work are interesting. It’s the ‘in’ thing.” Lana donates a quilt every year to a com-

Children’s Centre celebrates 10 years of community care

Always a family affair

I

t was face paints and smiles all round for more than 100 children who flocked to the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre with their families on Friday, November 15, to celebrate 10 years of the service in the town. Comprising both a childcare centre and a kindergarten, the centre first opened its doors in 2003 after many years of local families tirelessly campaigning. The centre caters for children from six weeks to 12 years old, with before and after school and kindy care available, and a CAHYS nurse conducting fortnightly health checks. More than 300 people in attendance were treated to a beautiful spring night, with a range of activities, including Bop ‘Til U Drop disco, jumping castle and face painting on hand to keep the

youngsters amused, and a sausage sizzle and delicious cake stall making sure no-one was hungry. The kindergarten children also entertained with a few familiar songs and dances, while silent auction of both goods and children’s artwork had many a parent and grandparent snapping up the creative work and range of goods on offer. The highlight of this was a signed 2013 West Coast Eagles football gurnsey going to a loyal (and perhaps one of only a few in the state!) supporter. TWCCC’s assistant director, Emily Stringer, said the festivities were a fabulous way for the centre to acknowledge the past decade and to share its growth with the wider community. “It was a fun night for all the kids,” Emily said.

“They were able to access a variety of activities including Bop ‘Til U Drop disco, jumping castle, face painting as well as the centre’s facilities. “The parents were also able to enjoy a concert put on by the children (and) it was great to see so many parents and grandparents attend.” Emily said the silent auction was a big success with lots of support shown by those who attended and the night was very relaxed with a great vibe. “It was a lovely way to celebrate the centre’s 10 years serving the community and we look forward to going from strength to strength.” In recent years the outdoor area at the centre has been vastly improved, shades erected, the dividing fence between the kindergarten and childcare centre taken down and a specific, safe, and engaging baby

garden area established for younger children. Numerous grants have also been won to improve resources, including an outdoor vegetable garden. o THANKS for your help • The centre thanks the following people for their valued support of the event: Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, Balco Australia, Freightmaster, The Oilman Group, Drakes Foodland Gawler, Woolworths Virginia, Chemplus Two Wells, IGA Two Wells, Helium House Gawler, Virginia Meat Store, Two Wells Bakery, Krompuss Cakes, Dublin Fruit & Veg, Verdale Olive Estate, Bovalina Olive Oil, Two Wells Tavern, R&J Supplies Two Wells, Virginia Nursery, Bunnings, Virginia Meat Store, Two Wells Echo & Plains Producer, and Rae Wilson and Jo Spurling for their yummy cakes and slices.

I attended the Jane Doyle “event” at Mallala Football Clu on Wednesday, November 13. Members of our community and some from outside our district were entertained by Jane’s humorous and interesting stories. She generously remained to chat to guests after the talk despite having news reading obligations to attend to in the evening. The afternoon tea was provided by the Two Wells Bakery and was of their usual excellent standard. The afternoon was organised by the District Council of Mallala Library Services (Anne, Amanda, Kylie, Lynette and Di) and ran immaculately. • On Monday, November 11, I attended the Remembrance Day service to lay a wreath on behalf of the council. MC for the occasion, Mr A Oats, demonstrated patience and determination as he coped with a dodgy PA system and numerous trucks. Mr R Spriggs delivered the Remembrance Prayer and an address. After the service some members of the community took advantage of the museum opening for the occasion and some attended a Remembrance Day lunch. • Recently I spotted a bird I hadn’t previously observed in Lewiston. A fellow ornithologist, Mark Webb, also spotted it. After several refreshments and some research using the ‘Field Guide to the Birds of Australia’, we have identified it as a Dusky Wood Swallow (Artamus Cyanopterus). It is another example of the rich variation in fauna we are privileged to experience in Lewiston as a direct result of the rich variation in flora we have planted and preserved. Mr Thornton said the Two Wells development, while appearing exciting on paper, would mean more stress on already strained infrastructure, like roads, and country towns should be left as just that – a country town. “It sure as hell looks exciting with all its walking tracks parks and wetlands, but what about major infrastructure like roads to the city and other places,” he commented. “When and where is the new hospital going to be built? “When I look at the number of people who are going to live in Two Wells (3000 homes, around 12,000 people; mum, dad and two kids, and 6000 cars, two per house) and have to use the Port Wakefield Road, which it is said will get them to the city in 45 minutes, it bothers me, as they will be on

Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure has agreed with the council, Hickinbotham and the Commissioner of Highways to sign an infrastructure deed. “This will create certainty and define roles and contributions to the local road infrastructure. “A new road network will be created to accommodate the new houses being built.” Mrs Vlahos said considering the electorate of Taylor was one of the fastest growing areas in the state and would continue to be so, she has advocated for more police, emergency services resources, facilities, and better public transport. The construction of a birth to Year 12 school, and the potential to create more than 3000 jobs in retail, commercial activities and light industry in the next 20 years as a result of the development, were also positives for the local community and the region, she said. The final word from Mr Thornton: “Leave things as they are. They (Two Wells) are going to lose that country township that’s for sure.”

All is not as it seems with the proposed new Two Wells development, according to one Angle Vale resident, who believes the project is just another way the State government is forcing primary producers off their land and pushing ahead to build more homes, no matter what local communities think. In an emailed letter to the Echo, Mr Thornton, who moved to Angle Vale to retire eight years ago, said he was disillusioned with the development process following a scenario in his home town when the new Northern Expressway was built, where he felt the community’s voice was not taken into account and planning workshops were only a token effort on the part of developers. Mr Thornton said he felt the same process was happening in Two Wells with the new development. “What bothers me is this: We here in Angle Vale were invited to a workshop just like the people in Two Wells and Lewiston were, where it was pretended that we were all going to have input on how we envisaged our country township in 30 years from that date (six years ago),” he said. “Within days our input and concerns were all in the bin, the plans for Angle Vale were well under way and re-zoning was just about done, we had been had just like the people in and around Two Wells. “When we wanted to retire we wanted to settle down in a country township away from suburbia and this is not going to happen if they build another 5000 plus homes. “Everything in the way of farming and horticulture is being pushed out and the new homes brought in. “The chicken farmers, the piggery, gone, cows,

Pony help so ‘neigh-bourly’

Almost $2500 was raised to support horse charity Pony Rescues, following a successful garage sale organised by Two Wells local, Tash Hogan in October. This is the second year Tash has organised the event – something she was inspired to do following the arrival of Tinker the pony at her home 18 months ago. Tash saved Tinker from malnutrition and likely death last year, and again organised the sale in aid of Pony Rescues; a Victorian-based group who save and re-home neglected and unwanted horses. The garage sale, held on Saturday October 26, was another big success, with a range of bargain items available, raffles, and a variety of stalls displaying everything from horse halters to salt licks. A hot shoeing demonstration conducted by local farriers Theo Adriaans and Harley Watts was a big hit, as was the gorgeous Clydesdale stallion, Braveheart, who won everyone’s hearts! Tash said the support from the local community, as well as wider afield, had been tremendous and many horses would benefit from the funds raised. “I cannot thank our local community enough for all the very generous donations and help towards our garage sale,” she said. “I would like to say thank you to Brydie and Craig Maynard, Judy Ramsey, Lyn Orr, Jodie Black, Pauline Bevan, Leonie Stevens, Demi Taylor, Felicity Kuchel and their families for all their help on the day. “Thanks also to farriers Theo Adriaans and Harley Watts, for

COUNT THEM IN! Students join Australia’s big music gig

Angle Vale Primary School students joined more than half a million school children across Australia from 2150 schools to sing the same song at the same time for what has been touted as Australia’s biggest music gig “Music: Count Us In”. Held on Thursday, October 31, the Count Us In event is Australia’s largest school music advocacy and participation program, growing steadily in reach and impact since it began in 2007. Fostering a love of music through learning, playing and listening in the hearts and minds of young Australians was the main aim of the event with the 400 plus children at AVPS joining hundreds of thousands of other school children to sing this year’s ‘song that stops the nation’ titled “Keep On.” AVPS music teacher, Lisa Williamson, said this was the third year the school had been involved in the event, but the first time all students of the school had gathered together to sing. “We were involved in the event because music matters,” Lisa said. “Music is good; it develops confidence, teamwork,

persistence and a sense of fun.” Lisa said it was wonderful to listen to the children singing and playing musical instruments all together and to think thousands of other students across the country were doing the same thing at that exact same time. “Every class was involved in the event, including our brand new Receptions,” she said. “It was fantastic. It really lifted music’s profile throughout the school.” During the song Reception students performed actions and body percussion movements, lower primary students played instruments including shakers, drums, chopsticks and claves, while some primary students performed cup percussions and others danced. Four talented students who were mentored by singer songwriter Katie Noonan penned the song “Keep On,” which has been produced by award-winning producer and Count Us In ambassador John Foreman and recorded by The Voice runner-up, Darren Percival. “We have achieved record numbers of schools participating this year, which is really exciting for me, in my seventh

Managed by the Music Council of Australia (MCA), Music: Count Us In is supported by funding from the Federal government and meets a priority recommendation by the National Review of School Music Education (2005) to raise the status of music in Australian schools.

When learning comes naturally Close you eyes a bit and imagine the plants these students are holding, and the area behind them in six months time – the plants have all grown, water is running along the creek bed and hopefully a frog or two are inhabiting the pond. It’s got all the makings of a lovely, nurturing, inviting and educational setting, and for the students of Angle Vale Primary School, it will be their very own explore and learn habitat garden. The three R’s of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle are always being considered at AVPS, where students from Reception to Year 7 recently spent a few days planting out this barren and wasted area of their grounds. Earthworks to create a dry creek bed and the “bones” of the garden were constructed earlier in the year, with funding from the NRM’s Grow a Great School Program, and Coles’ Junior Landcare project as well as a one-off $1000 grant from the NRM board. AVPS Reception teacher and garden project co-ordina-

wetland (in case you’re wondering, that means not wet all the time!), as well as a bridge, frog pond, and rock area, Ms Marschall said she was excited by the possibilities for learning and exploring nature. “We want to use this area as an outdoor classroom,”

she explained. “It’s a place where kids can come and play and explore and it’s a place where they can be in touch with nature.” The habitat garden will also be linked with the school’s vegetable garden, which is focused on wiping out waste.

If you’re feeling stressed, or have a sore neck or back, is likely you need a massage! Virginia’s first Massage and Health Centre opened on November 9, and people from all around the district are flocking there for a range of therapeutic treatments. Business owner, Maria Yfantidis, is a fully trained remedial therapist with a Diploma in Remedial Therapy, and specialises in the treatment side of massage. Maria has another therapist, Alexandra, who works on Wednesdays, specialising in relaxation massaging and holistic treatment. Maria and Alexandra provide a wide range of treatments, including remedial, relaxation and sports massages, trigger point, lymphatic drainage and myofascial release. They also provide SASHA and Isis Lotus healing, Reiki and Chakra balance. Research shows therapeutic massage doesn’t just feel good, but is good for you, and is a way of helping you deal with the stresses of everyday life. It not only enhances general health and well-being, but can lower blood pressure, and increase blood circulation and lymph flow. If you are seeking relief from a medical condition or sports injury, a remedial massage can help you work towards recovery. n Virginia Massage and Health Centre is conveniently located next to the post office, and is open Monday to Friday 10am to 7pm, and Saturday 10am to 4pm. Appointments are essential by phoning 0438 853 481. Sore Muscles…Neckpain…Headaches

Remembrance Day TWO WELLS, NOVEMBER 11, 2013

District Council of Mallala staff from left, Lynette Seccafien, Kylie Tomney, Anne Sawtell and Amanda Kirvan with Jane Doyle.

Jane’s journey anchored by country papers

Wreaths were laid in honor of current serving members and all soldiers killed in action. Pictured, from left are, Val Flaherty, who laid a wreath in honour of Australia’s youngest fallen solider, Private John Harris, aged just 14 when he was killed at Gallipoli; Robin Bruce, Roy Hunt and Judy Heaslip.

Lewiston resident, Christine Two Wells Scout Group members, from left, Ashlee Hayes brought along Roxi the Henneker, Heidi Bates and Bonny Charles. Labrador A sunny spring day saw around 80 people attend the Remembrance Day service in Two Wells on Monday November 11. Led by local RSL president, Tony Flaherty, poppies were handed out to those in attendance as wreaths were laid in honour of fallen Australians and in appreciation for those who are currently still serving. Mr Flaherty said it was exciting to see the growth of aware-

ness about the armed forces from members of the community and to see so many people getting involved in not just Remembrance Day but also the Anzac Day service and general RSL activities. “The excitement at what is happening with our war memorial is building,” Mr Flaherty said. “The upgrade is just about to start and will, when completed, be the only memorial of its type in Australia.”

Members of the Two Wells Scout Group formed a guard of honour near the war memorial monument as a minute silence was held after the playing of the Last Post. Following the service, a sausage sizzle was held back at the RSL clubrooms, with many taking the opportunity to enjoy the family atmosphere and have a chat about their links to the armed forces and war history.

Acclaimed news presenter, Jane Doyle, was in Mallala last week as guest speaker as part of the District Council of Mallala’s popular library events. Speaking to an audience of about 85 people, Jane explained how she “fell” into journalism, starting out in print, followed by a stint in radio and then eventually finding her place as the prime news anchor in television at Channel 7. Jane has been at the helm of news coverage in South Australia for more than two decades, with 16 of these years spent broadcasting side-by-side with the great Graeme Goodings. She is currently reading the 6pm news bulletin with John Riddell. “I think my career has been more like my accidental career,” Jane joked. “A media career was not what I set out to have. “I became the teacher my mother couldn’t (and) I’ve never regretted doing the teaching training. “Indeed it did give me a great grounding on a number of levels and I still use aspects of it to this day.” Jane’s presentation was filled with lots of humour, personal anecdotes and industry insights interspersed with the odd joke and Aussie slang we’d expect of a “country girl”. Growing up in rural Queensland as the eldest of three siblings, Jane studied primary school and special education teaching but had always wanted to write. She began her media career as a cadet journalist in the small town of Charters Towers, where she met her husband of more than 30 years, Ian

Bec O’Brien reports: Doyle – a well-known and much-loved radio, and later TV presenter. They have an 18-year-old son, Henry. Later the couple moved to Port Pirie and it was here Jane continued her media career with the Port Pirie Recorder. “My career has been one of persistence, being at the right place at the right time and hopefully with the right attitude, the right approach, and a bit of luck thrown in,” she said. Moving to Adelaide for Ian’s work, Jane found work as a reporter for TV Week magazine. Her first radio announcing position “fell into her lap” after she kept hounding the ABC asking if there were any vacant positions. “My first announcing job wasn’t reading the news,” she laughed. “It was sitting in this great big room listening to reels and reels of tapes on how to announce things.” Moving from ABC radio to ABC television in the mid-1980s Jane said she knocked back three offers from Channel 7 to defect and read the news, before finally making the change to commercial television in August 1989. Some of the highlights of her TV career included covering Anzac Days, Christmas pageants and live election campaigns as well as the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and meeting Princess Diana when she visited Port Pirie. “Live TV is so exciting, so much fun,” Jane enthused. “It’s like a live high wire act. The privilege it is to be invited into people’s homes on a nightly basis is never to be taken for granted.” District Council of Mallala mayor, Duncan Kennington, presented Jane with a basket of goodies from local businesses in appreciation of her attendance. Jane remarked on how much she was looking forward to sampling some of the delicious afternoon tea and the offering from Two Wells Bakery didn’t disappoint.

Landcare friends deserve thanks Our Landcare group says farewell to some very good friends and members of our group. Paul and Evelyn have played a pivotal role in the successes of our projects. Their property bordered the Aunger reserve, and their commitment to improving our landscapes involved the planting of this reserve with a number of members from the local community. The Aunger Ponds Reserve is one of our region’s assets and is a great example of what can be achieved when the community works together. • Every summer between November through to the end of February more than 20,000 migratory birds will visit some of our wetlands and coastlines within our region, which are amongst the most important for wading migratory birds in Australia. These areas are valuable feeding grounds for many of these bird species. Please be mindful when visiting our

coastal region during this time of year. Keep dogs on their leads and please don’t drive on beaches or over sand dunes. These birds only have a short stay and need to eat as much as they can to sustain them during their flight back to China and Siberia. For more information contact Birdlife Australia jean.turner@birdlife.org.au. • As we head into summer many of us will have to look at buying in feed for our livestock. Please beware weed seeds can be introduced into your property when bringing in contaminated fodder. Always purchase fodder from a local

The heat is on! IT has been a busy few weeks for Two Wells CFS Brigade. During the last three weeks we have attended 18 call outs, which included 10 grass fires, one tree down, two tree fires, two car fires, two crop fires (attended by strike teams from our brigade), which burnt about 125 hectares, and one shed explosion, which scattered debris for more than 200 metres. One of the grass fires was at Lewiston and burnt approx 15 hectares. An emergency warning was issued for the surrounding area. TRhis was to alert immediate residents of impending risk. This message proved to be successful with residents directly threatened by the fire and enabled them to protect stock and property. It is advantageous to try to provide access to property in case of fire and to clear away debris such as branches and obstacles. • It is now FIRE SEA-

SON and fire restrictions apply. The CFS website is available for information and advice. There is a lot of dry vegetation around the area and extra care and vigilance is required. On a positive note, we have had a good response in regard to recruitment, with some new faces joining us. We are still a bit light on for members during mornings, so if anyone is interested please come down to see us at Wells road, opposite the hotel. reliable source to reduce the likelihood of pest plants becoming established within our region. On my regular walks around Lewiston I have noticed a pest plant that I haven’t seen growing within Lewiston before, Columba daisy. It is very common on the western side of Port Wakefield Rd and it can take over if left unchecked. Calomba daisy is unpalatable to stock and also reduces the growth of pasture species by chemicals that it releases into the soil. Wind, animals or vehicles disperse seeds and seeds may also be carried in fodder. Flowers are a mustard colour and appear in October and November. Plants die in early summer, leaving dry woody stems carrying the seeds. If you have seen infestations of this plant in Lewiston please contact Gawler Natural Resource Office by emailing gawler.office@sa.gov.au.

Burra ride for Equestrian Club Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club held an overnight camp and trail ride at Burra in October.

By Tracey Smith APEC treasurer

An overnight camp to the north of Burra was the October outing for members of the Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club. Held on the Kellock property of “Thistlebeds” on the weekend of October 26 and 27, 27 people attended with 19 horses, the remainder of attendees being family members of riders. Three rides were held over the weekend, two on the Saturday afternoon and one on Sunday morning. The first was designed specifically to enable beginner and young riders to participate with most family members also walking the route to assist with their children if required. A special thanks to Maureen W who was a great help providing support and guidance to one young rider with a new horse. Also, thanks to those parents who walked with the group and supported their children on the ride. This was a great opportunity

for young riders to experience what it is like to ride in a larger group and was much appreciated by both those young riders and their parents. The second was an advanced ride of about 2 ½ hours. One member laughingly noted that her horse didn’t get out of a trot but simply extended her trot. Participants were able to go through quite a deep creek as well as a shallower one. On Saturday evening, the group gathered for a BBQ and salads. A huge thanks to Graham and Judy Kellock, and Jane and David Hill, who not only allowed APEC members to ride on their property but also did all the catering, cooking and clean up for the meal on the Saturday night. They also assisted the event co-ordinator extensively in setting up for the event and packing up on Sunday afternoon, which was very much appreciated. The Sunday morning ride was an intermediate ride. Ten riders participated in this ride, including two junior riders. The ride went past the old

racecourse on the property and into one of the large creeks, with magnificent scenery. Riders also had the opportunity to water their horse at a dam, with a number of horses never having seen one before. A separate ride was available on Sunday morning for younger or less experienced riders, with six riders participating and the feedback from the young participants was fantastic. One young rider commented that the ride gave her more confidence and she now wanted to ride more. Given the positive feedback the APEC Committee received, they considered this event to be a success and it is wonderful to hear how our young riders are developing and enjoying their riding and our more experienced riders are having the opportunity to see and do something different from their day to day riding. A number of participants expressed their desire that it run for more than just one night so that is something to be considered for the future.

Volunteer ‘army’ starts on Two Wells sporting club upgrade

DEMOLITION DAY Work has begun on the long-overdue upgrade of the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club’s clubrooms. An army of volunteers gathered on Sunday November 3 to start the demolition process, with project co-ordinator, Tiff Gameau, saying the turnout was terrific. The club is relying heavily on volunteer contributions to reduce costs with many local businesses showing their support by offering discounted rates, free labour or materials. “We’ve had great support from volunteers helping with our project,” Tiff said.

“We have got most of the inside gutted now so we’re ready to start rebuilding, which will be the extension.” The wall frames of the new extension, which is set to house a new canteen area, bar and dining room were put up on November 23 and work has been progressing steadily. The $550,000 project has sparked a lot of interest in the community and many past members have been dropping in to see what’s going on. “There’s been a lot of interest, a lot of people popping in,” Tiff said. “I think people, especially those who

have a deep feeling or involvement, and were perhaps involved in the previous renovations all those years ago, are interested and excited. “There’s a lot of history there too, I definitely think the community are excited about and looking forward to what it will look like in the end.” The club is hoping to have all the brickwork of the extension completed by January so internal renovations can progress, with the project hopefully completed by the start of the 2014 football and netball season.

Andy Gameau, of Gameau Plumbing, lends a hand to knock down the exterior wall of the clubrooms to make way for the extension.
