Two Wells Melodrama Group has raised around $25,000 for local community groups after another successful season wrapped up last month. The group performed an original script by upand-coming performer and writer, Jessica Renaglia titled “Mayhem at Magical Manor”, with director Eleisha Arbon and stage stalwart, Anne Arbon, also contributing. Following a slightly gothic feel, the story centered around two young journalists vying for a promotion at their local newspaper who both set out to write the “scoop” of the year and resolve a mysterious curse in the process. Featuring a forgetful librarian, a fierce newspaper editor, a mild police officer and an unusual family who disappeared years ago, there were laughs a plenty and some great performances. As usual, audience participation was well received by the cast and many clever retorts were seemingly worked into each performance. council probes move Budget’s $100,000 to research new Two Wells civic centre District Council of Mallala (DCM) will start preliminary investigations and costings into building a civic centre in Two Wells, with $100,000 earmarked in its annual budget review. If the civic centre progresses it is likely to incorporate a move from Mallala of DCM’s main office to Two Wells some time in the future. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said at council’s Monday, May 26, meeting councillors discussed at length the implications this would have on the district, adding the funds were considered as part of its 2013/14 annual budget review, not the upcoming budget.

Bec O’Brien reports: “The inclusion of $100,000 is toward further work that is required to explore design options and costings of a civic centre in Two Wells,” Mr Mansueto said. “Council is not intending to make any final decision on the civic centre during this current term and would require to consult

with the community prior to progressing any further works on the civic centre.” Previous attempts in years gomne by to move the council base from Mallala to Two Wells have met public concern over impact on the Mallala township. The investigative work, Mr Mansueto said, would be conducted by a council subcommittee, which would report to council’s Facilities and Infrastructure Advisory Committee. At the May 26 meeting councillors voted in favour of the Civic Precinct/Office Accommodation project, following which a division was called. Those standing in favour were councillors Strudwicke, Wasley, Daniele, Summerton

and McColl. Those against included councillors Jones, Picard, Howard and Kennington. Councillors Heley and Keen were not present at the meeting. Also included in the budget review for the 2013/14 year was an increase in consultancy expenditure of $156,000 carried over from 2012/13 for council’s Open Space Strategy, with the expenditure requested being $56,000. This is the third review of councils budget for the year ending 30 June 2014 and is reflective of figures as of 30 April 2014.

Your say on council spending plan District Council of Mallala considered its draft 2014/2015 budget last month, and now ratepayers will have a chance to view the document, with community consultation currently being sought. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said the budget operating result was better than outlined in its Long-term Financial Plan, and invited all residents to take the opportunity to comment on the draft budget before it was endorsed later this month. The following are major bids for the 2014/2015 year:

$600,000 for a roundabout at the intersection of Mallala Road and Old Port Wakefield Road; $32,000 for local government elections to be held November; $90,000 for a senior planning officer; $21,000 for a customer request software system; $35,000 contribution for a regional human resources role; $20,000 for a horse industry study; $2000 for Mallala Museum electrical upgrade As well as the above major bids, council has also proposed the following road allocations: Marshman Road, Mallala (Reallocation from 2013/2014) $130,000;

Elizabeth Street, Mallala (Reallocation from 2013/2014) $ 41,000; Hill Road, Mallala $220,000; Gameau Road Spoon Drain $18,200 . Community consultation of the draft 2014/2015 budget is currently open and will conclude on Wednesday June 18, with council providing provision for public comment and responses on its website www. mallala.sa.gov.au as well as by mail. This year the public will also have the chance to comment in person, with time allocated as part of the Tuesday, June 10 council meeting.

Developers tell council of 1260 houses in first stage propOsal:

Massive housing plan south of Dublin Eric Seed

Dublin could be the next town to boom within the District Council of Mallala, with prospective developers suggesting up to 1260 dwellings could be built in its first stage. Land developers Leinad, of which local Dublin hotelier, Eric Seed, is a director, gave a presentation to council members on Monday May 26 outlining the company’s long-term plan for the township. Leinad director, Daniel Palumbo and Ekistics Planning and Design managing director, Richard Dwyer, spoke for almost an hour, informing councillors the 1450-hectare site south of Dublin, which the company has already purchased, was the perfect place for a new housing development in the region. The development would be established in phases, Mr Dwyer said, the first of which

Bec O’Brien reports: would reinforce the primary focus of the main street and incorporate the establishment of a neighbourhood centre as well as 1260 homes. Stage 2 would see a sales showroom and new offices built; Stage 3 incorporates upgraded sport and recreational facilities; Stage 4 includes plans for a childcare or early learning centre and stage 5 sees the construction of specialty shops and the expanded township to include up to 4200 new dwellings. Mr Dwyer said the developers were also considering the possibility of aged care and health care facilities in the future, and outlined the potential for the develop-

ment to create hundreds of employment opportunities. He also stated the company wished to work cooperatively with both council and local Dublin resident, and hoped to hold workshops and community meetings before the development began and as it progressed. Leinad has drafted a Statement of Intent (SOI) and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which it presented to council, where it also asked councillors to consider lobbying the state government to include Dublin in its 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide, which is currently up for review. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said council staff would “now work with Leinad Developments to progress the SOI and any associated agreements to bring back to council for further consideration”.

Two Wells Melodrama group (TWMG) president, Lance Morgan, said it was exciting for the group to see their months of hard work pay off. “For those in the audience the show was a blast and the accompanying three-course menu was a treat, as usual,” Lance said. “It was a brilliant show, and a brilliant first-up written show by Jessica, with added support from Eleisha and Anne Arbon. “It was full of young humour as well as old humour, yet the young performers really owned the show. It was a great show for the younger generation.” Lance said this year saw the group welcome back John McInerney to the stage, with Mollie Wilson joining the orchestra to become the third generation of the Wilson family to be involved with TWMG. “The future for the show looks really positive with the young script writers coming through,” he added. “The cast we had this year have really bonded together well and delivered an ‘over Two Wells Echo, June, 2014

All funds raised from the event are ploughed back into the community and over the years the group has donated more than $500,000 to local groups. With this year’s performance done and dusted the cast, crew and many volunteers can all take a much-earned breather, and with two scripts already being laid on the table for next year’s show, the future does indeed look bright.

Flood ‘control’ crucial to protect Middle Beach Community, council again confront predicted sea level rise District Council of Mallala has conducted a third round of public consultation for residents of Middle Beach in response to its current Coastal Adaptations Study. The workshop, held at the Middle Beach Caravan Park on May 21, was attended by 16 residents, DCM mayor Duncan Kennington, DCM Two Wells ward councillor Mark Wasley and council staff, and was facilitated by DCM strategic projects coordinator, Carol Muzyk. Ms Muzyk said council again received vital feedback from concerned community members on strategies proposed to respond to current and predicted flood events for the settlement. Ms Muzyk said the University of South Australia (UniSA) was engaged by council early last year to develop strategies to address predicted sea level rise, frequent flooding and coastal erosion at Middle Beach. “After hearing from Mark Western from UniSA, the 16 residents who attended the workshop worked with staff and elected members to provide feedback on the pro-

posed strategies and how the council and the community can best respond to flood events in the immediate future and when flood levels are predicted to be a further 0.3 metres higher, ” she said. “A key point about Middle Beach is there is little that can be done to protect the settlement from flooding. “The proposed strategies are focused on implementing flood control strategies as opposed to flood protection strategies, which are viable in the other three coastal settlements of Parham, Webb Beach and Thompson Beach.” Two Wells resident and long-time Middle Beach user, Malcolm Frost, attended the meeting and was pleased to hear council propose physical protections for the settlement. “To have some actual arguments for the physical protections proposed for some of Middle Beach was very positive,” Mr Frost said.

“What people really think about is looking after the current situation, not what might happen into the future (and) to protect some areas of Middle Beach in the current situation requires some work to be done, a levy around the back, with other measures considered also. “What is required is for physical work to happen and it seems it is very difficult for that to get organised as our council doesn’t seem to have very much in the way of resources.” At the completion of the workshop Ms Muzyk highlighted council is keen to receive more information from the community with regard to past flood events and to also receive further feedback on proposed flood control strategies. “The next step is to discuss the proposed strategies with various State government groups to ensure they meet their requirements prior to finalisation of the report and presentation to council seeking endorsement,” she said.

Tony Abbott lied before the election when he said there would be no new taxes, and Joe Hockey is lying after the election to try to justify this broken promise. Labor believes all Australians should get the healthcare they need, not just the healthcare they can afford. Only Labor can be trusted to protect Medicare.

Waste not, want not! Council plans to meet new refuse, recycling demands District Council of Mallala has endorsed its draft waste management strategy following public consultation, and hopes to find new and better ways to manage waste. DCM developed the strategy with the aim of meeting the greater demands of local communities for better levels of environmental responsibility and more efficient use of resources with a plan that is consistent with the goals, outcomes and strategies of its own Strategic Plan, and also meets those of South Australia’s Waste Strategy 2011-2015. The goals described in the strategy for 20142020 are: 1 – To provide high quality and environmentally responsible kerbside waste and recycling collection service to the community. 2 – To ensure that the community is informed and actively participates in initiatives to provide environmentally responsible, economic and cost effective waste manage-

ment services. 3 – To ensure council operates and manages cost effective and best practice waste management facilities. 4 – To ensure council provides waste management services and facilities that meet the needs and expectations of the current and future community. 5 – To ensure council conducts its operations and services in an environmentally sustainable manner. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto said the plan would help streamline council’s waste management practices and plan for waste management into the future. “The strategy identifies the areas that council will look at,” Mr Mansueto said. “A key focus is to improve recycling, reduce land fill and try to manage the cost of delivering such services.” The draft waste management strategy was endorsed at council’s full meeting on May 12.

Led by Officer in Charge of the Barossa Local Service Area (BLSA), Chief Inspector Alex Zimmermann, the forum was heavy on statistics and data for specific areas about property crime, road safety and crime to people but also incorporated questions from the floor on a variety of topics, including truck road worthiness and safety, hoon drivers, stock on the road, driving under the influence of drugs and mobile phone use in vehicles. The BLSA, which includes Two Wells, Gawler and Nuriootpa regions, is one of seven regional local service areas in the state. Inspector Zimmerman said it was

important for local police to be closely engaged and connected with the community and the forum, which was held in the Two Wells Catholic Church hall on Wednesday, May 21, and attracted around 30 people, The Two Wells event was the third such forum in the BLSA, and had the

highest attendance, with others being held in Nuriootpa and Gawler. Two Wells resident, Bev Smith-Trim attended with her husband John but was disappointed by the turnout. Bev said listening to police information relevant to our local area was “time very well spent” and urged others to take part in any future police forums. “The police visual display was so informative, and the time allocated for questions from the floor was adequate,” she said. “I would like to thank SAPOL for this very well presented information evening and I urge local people to make the effort to attend if there is another presentation in the future. “Community members working with police can make our community a better place for us all.”

Skaters, thieves impact memorial

I write on a disappointing note about my concerns with skate boarders at the Two Wells War Memorial. Skate boarders have been using the plinth at the rear of the memorial for jumps and have damaged the fine edging. This is very disappointing, as a large sum of money has been raised for this project both by some local businesses and the RSL. The plinth is to have a Rising Sun mounted on it, which is to be lit up as a mark of deep respect to those who have given their lives for this nation. If this continues other options will be canvassed by the RSL to see just what can be done to stop this disrespectful behaviour by a small group of individuals. Local police have been informed. I

trust the persons responsible for this will understand and not use the memorial for a skate park, as any damage to the memorial will need to be recouped from these persons if caught. • On another disappointing note, some time during the night of Thursday, May 22, some person/persons tried to remove the plaque from the War Memorial which lists the names of local men who went away to war. Hopefully some community-minded person either heard or saw someone at the memorial acting in a manner that was out of character. They appeared to try to remove the plaque, probably to sell for scrap, with a chisel and hammer and one would assume

this action would be noticed by someone. Hopefully. The matter was reported to police. If any person knows anything regarding events listed here, please contact Two Wells Police Station. Honouring our ANZAC heroes Centenary grant allows Virginia to salute three past students

Virginia Primary School (VPS) will honour three former students who all died in World War I with a special memorial to be constructed as part of Anzac centenary celebrations next year. The school won a grant of $5000 as part of the Federal government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. VPS history and cultural studies co-ordinator, Caterina Ditroia, said the war efforts of former students John James Sheedy, and brothers Albert and Howard Hatcher, who all fought and died during WWI would be commemorated in a unique mosaic wall. The wall will feature in the schools Peace Garden, situated at the front of the school, which is planted with rosemary bushes and is already highlighted by a special mosaic peace symbol. Under the guidance of Gawlerbased artist, Kate Alforth, students across the school will participate in hands-on sessions during Term 4 to construct the mosaic wall.

This, Caterina said, would link in with the school’s strong visual art and history program. “We want to erect a mosaic wall depicting the significance of those former students who attended the

school and died during WW1,” she explained. “I’m really excited by the project. “It acknowledges our past and it brings to the front the importance of soliders from the local area.

“It also helps students to develop empathy and closes that gap of reality in the sense that these were real people.” Caterina said students at the school were involved in Remem-

brance and Anzac Day services each year and were very much a part of the whole concept of acknowledging past and current war efforts. Relatives of John James Sheedy are also excited by the project, with Colleen Sheedy-Palethorpe –whose five-year-old son, Flynn, currently attends the school – supporting the grant application with a letter. Colleen’s great-great-grandfather was John James Sheedy’s uncle. In her letter, Colleen comments, “There are no surviving descendants of James Sheedy’s original family line; as the great-grand-daughter of his uncle I feel it my duty – and privilege – to support Virginia Primary School in their quest to have his memory and that of other local fallen ANZAC soldiers acknowledged and respected in this way. In a letter that he wrote to my Grandfather from the Morphetville army barracks in September, 1914, James spoke of his great desire to one day be able to return to the Institute in Virginia and relay his adventures to the townsfolk. Alas, a little more than six months later, that dream died with him on distant battlefields. James Sheedy was a pupil of the original Virginia school; I can think of no more fitting way to honour the story he never got to tell than by having this tribute made by current students back on his home soil in the township he loved so much”. The school hopes to have the memorial completed in time for the 100th anniversary celebrations of Anzac Day in 2015.

n TWO WELLS RSL RECEIVES $7500:

Memorial upgrade part of big project Two Wells RSL recently received $7500 in Federal funding to upgrade its WW1 monument and haven’t wasted any time in starting the project. The funds were received through Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion, as part of the government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty said work on improving and restabilising the WW1 monument had already begun, with volunteers helping last month to remove pavers, break down cement and carefully lift the monument off its base. “This is really good for us because the base of the WW1 memorial that we’ve got is fractured,” Mr Flaherty said.

“It has to come down and be repaired anyway and this just helps facilitate that.” Mr Flaherty, said the refurbishment of the monument was part of a much larger project for the whole area, which will see the construction of a unique memorial honouring Australian soliders killed in Afghanistan. For the most part, funding for the overall project, expected to exceed $80,000, has been raised locally. “It’s been a community RSL effort,” Mr Flaherty said. “The people and the families who come along every Friday for a meal or make a donation, they are the ones who have made this possible. “If we didn’t have such a supportive community it wouldn’t happen.”

Dublin another to benefit

Dublin History Group was another local organisation to receive Centenary Local Grants funding. The group will gain $5000 for creation of displays with banners for events with a tree planting ceremony in memory of the 17 residents that did not return from WWI to the Dublin district and surrounds. Others in the Wakefield electorate to benefit included Auburn Clare and Districts RSL sub branch, which received $10,000 for lighting the Clare memorial. Duncan Kennington Sophie Thomson, the gardening guru, was the district’s guest speaker at Two Wells Bowls Club recently. She was educational and it was a measure of how interesting she is that people attended from outside of the district from as far away as Pt. Pirie. Members of the audience were given prizes for answering questions on the talk. I didn’t win any but I did return home with an increased knowledge and enthusiasm for the garden. Anne Sawtell and Amanda Kirvan organised the event. It’s always a pleasure to show appreciation for the community-minded volunteers of the district. o We did that with two film showings on Wednesday May 14 at the Gawler Cinemas. Janine Harding and Lynette Seccafien did an immaculate job of organising the event, which resulted in an enjoyable experience for all. I was so involved I forgot to collect my choc top at the beginning of the film. o On Saturday, May 17, I attended the opening night of the Two Wells Melodrama performance. About 45 people attended and had a fun interactive evening, including a 3-course meal. Apart from the dozen actors numerous team members co-operated to make the night a success: waiters, cooks, musicians, lighting, an MC, and bar staff, which included me. It’s impressive that Jess Renaglia, one of the actors, wrote the play. Not being one of the world’s great film critics, I’d describe it as a sort of Marx Brothers meets the Adams Family. o I was out in my shed yesterday and heard a familiar hissing noise (possums). After some investigation, through the chaos I found the culprits; a mother and child curled up nice and cosy like in an old bookshelf. I would have thought prodding by a person would send them scrambling on their way, but no such luck. They were determined to continue their snooze and not return to the elements. Being very brave I put on the motorbike jacket and gloves I hadn’t worn in several decades. It then took about an hour to convince them to leave – and me to block up the entrance.

Mark Smith, son of local residents Bev and John Smith-Trim recently graduated as a Doctor of Music (Composition and arranging) from the University of Adelaide. Mark is the current South Australian Champion of Champions for Brass Solos, and in April came third in the National Solo Contest for Flugel horn players. Teaching at a primary school in a beachside suburb of Adelaide for almost 20 years, Mark has more than half of the students participating in music. The school has junior and senior concert bands, a rock band, a choir and a Glee Club. The Senior Concert Band will be competing in the upcoming Balaklava Eisteddfod from August 1-3.

eing part of a community is more than just living in the area – it’s about getting involved so you can make a difference. That’s certainly what Eddie Stubing, President of the Two Wells Regional Action Team (TWRAT) believes. Having been in the role for three years now, he is very proud of all the work the group has done to ensure the town is properly supported. “There truly is a community strength and you know it feels like home because we all look out for each other,” “Together we can make a difference,” Eddie said. Definitely a group of hardworking individuals, the TWRAT is dedicated to supporting economic opportunities and the general development of the town. Eddie said that most of the members are also part of other community groups and organisations within the town. Recent projects include restoring the Craft Shop (formerly the Old Courthouse), working with young kids in the town to promote the Skate Park and being a part of the remediation work at the Salt Creek at Middle Beach. “The strength of the team is truly in its members,” Mr Stubing said. TWRAT has also been working with the Hickenbotham Group with its plans of the proposed residential estate. A former refugee and a much-acclaimed gospel choir will spread the word of refugees in Australia at the Two Wells Uniting Church hall in support of Refugee Week this month. The event, from 7pm on June 20, will feature the Burundi Choir, as well as guest speaker and former refugee, Muhama Yotham. The choir, who are part of the Amazing Grace Gospel Church, Salisbury, will perform a number of engaging songs, while Muhama will give an insight into his journey, like that of many other refugees, from Africa to Australia seven years ago. Muhama completed a Bachelor of Administrative

However, after reaching stagnancy – the group felt they needed to reform and did so as the Two Wells Tourism and Trade Association 18 years later. To help with the grant application process, they also started up the Strategic Planning Committee of Two Wells and Environs.

Tony Lange, past president and current member of the TWRAT said both the groups worked hand in hand for many years, but needed a more efficient process. “There were a lot of people on the same committees who were felt a sort of retiredness about it all,” Tony said. This lead to the creation of TWRAT in October 2007, as we know today – bigger, better and always striving to make a difference.

GROWTH continues at FLAG (Families Learning and Growing), with six new families joining the group. Coupled with attendance from existing members, weekly participation has averaged 10 families. Towards the end of Term 1 there was a focus on Easter; prior to that children (and parents/carers) enjoyed participating in craft activities linked to classics like ‘Little Red Riding Hood’, ‘The Three Little Pigs’and ‘Puss in Boots’,

From ‘Jack in the Beanstalk’ came the idea of creating a ‘beanstalk’ to represent the FLAG members and their links to each other, with each child having their own’ leaf’. Children continue to enjoy looking at this visual symbol of their ‘FLAG family’ and take delight in identifying their individual leaf. During this current term the children are working with ‘recycled craft’ –constructing everyday items from vari-

Two Wells Commercial Hotel hosted the Gawler and Districts 8-Ball Association on Saturday, May 24, for a fun quiz night. Around 60 people took part in the event, with all funds raised supporting the association to send a team to participate in the annual State Carnival to be held in Broken Hill from June 6-9. The seven-member team comprises captain and team manager, Shane Tieste, Aaron Court, Adam Andretzke, Ben

Andretzke, Josh Ireland, Russell Youlten and Jock Parks. Most of these guys play in local teams, and will compete against other associations from around the state. Last year the Gawler and Districts 8-Ball Association returned its bestever result since they began attending the event in 2007, where they placed runner-up to Eyre Peninsula. FOR the first time in more than a decade, Two Wells Red Cross branch hosted the annual South Australian Red Cross Barossa and District Zone conference. As Red Cross celebrates 100 years across the country, TWRC president Val Vercoe said the conference, on Monday, May 12, was well attended with more than 40 people

from across the region taking part. District Council of Mallala chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, welcomed members and opened the conference, while long-serving volunteer and Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, later spoke about his volunteering involvement in a number of groups. Crimes and offences keep police busy

Last month local police reported about 42 different offences in the area, including speeding, unlicensed and drink driving, assault and cannabis. The Pony Club had a car broken into and a fridge stolen. A man doing burnouts was stopped by an officer, then arrested for assault. Reserve gates should halt vehicle impact

New gates set to be installed at Dublin’s sensitive, heritage listed reserve, aim to restrict off-road vehicles and motorbikes while still permitting locals and visitors to enjoy the natural surrounds. District Council of Mallala is taking steps to reduce access into the reserve and preserve the fragile native environment, with local councillor, TerryAnne Keen, earlier in the year saying off-road vehicles and motorbikes were destroying the reserve. At council’s May 12 meeting it resolved to reduced the number of access points into the reserve from 13 to three, with “kissing gates” (plan pictured) set to be installed at the corner of Seventh and North Streets, the end of Third Street and the end of First Street. DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, said the intent of the gates was to restrict access to pedestrians, prams and wheelchairs only.

Representatives from the South Australian RSL branch attended the Two Wells RSL sub-branch for a meal recently. Local branch president, Tony Flaherty said it was terrific to have state RSL branch and board members visit the club and experience the camaraderie and friendship more than 60 people participate in every Friday night. State RSL board member and RSL Care (SA Inc) chairman, David Everitt, along with State RSL (SA/NT) customer service manager, Julia Langrehr, dropped in on Friday May 16. Mr Everitt said he was always happy to support local communities and it was wonderful to see such a strong-knit gathering supporting veterans and their families.

Angle Vale school sets example I am currently on work placement at Angle Vale primary school and have been very fortunate to see and work with a number of schools on environmental sustainable programs. The programs implemented by the school in its quest to drive sustainability throughout the curriculum are a credit to the students and staff. A number of years ago this school was successful in receiving a grant through Natural Resource Management Board (NRM) action grants, to establish a butterfly garden and frog pond, with further funding from Grow A Great School program and Coles junior landcare program, which has enabled this area to be planted with local indigenous plants throughout. As a former NRM Group member, it has been a privilege to witness what this school has achieved since receiving funding for their project. Stevan takes his rugby to a new level You wouldn’t think this funky mop of hair would be conducive to playing a high-contact sport – what with getting in your face and easily being a target for the occasional hand to get tangled in – but for 19-year-old Two Wells resident, Stevan Stanojevic, it’s just one of many things that make him unique amongst his rugby union counterparts. Stevan, a plumber by trade, completed his primary school education at Virginia Primary School followed by secondary school at Gawler High School, and currently plays premier grade rugby union for the Southern Suburbs Rugby Union club. A front rower on the field, commonly known as a prop, Stevan is the first in line to take the hits throughout the game. “I’m a carrier,” he said.

Bec O’Brien reports: “I take the tackles, take the hits and carry the ball as far as I can. Stevan took up the sport when he was 10 years old but stopped after two years. He re-introduced himself to the game when he was 16 and has been playing ever since. “I found (Aussie Rules) footy was aimed at a body type whereas rugby was suited for all body types,” he explained as to why he chose rugby over the more common Aussie rules football. “There’s a role for everybody and it’s really good way to stay fit.” With training twice a week in the southern suburbs it’s not just a quick trip down to the local oval for a game

or a training session either, it’s a big commitment. Add to this his state commitments and Stevan spends a lot of time travelling for games, training and team meetings. Stevan was selected as a 17-year-old to play in Brighton Chiefs’ invitational squad and has represented Australia/South Australia at numerous national events, even travelling overseas to England and Wales with this squad. “That trip was amazing,” Stevan remarked. “Here we were on the other side of the world and the rugby was really different. “Going overseas was a huge challenge and I learnt so much.” A representative in the U16 South Australian Rugby Union state team and later

Two Wells rugby union talent, Stevan Stanojevic, recently competed in the National Under 20 tournament as a member of the state team, where South Australia placed second overall. as a member of the U18 South Australian School Boys team, he has also been selected as part of the prestigious U20 South Australian Junior Black Falcons and has competed at rugby’s top level for his age, for many years. Rugby union is the kind of sport many mums would cringe at, but Stevan says the support from his mum, Michelle, has been amazing – despite all the knocks,

bumps, bruises and the odd concussion. “I do a lot of running and a lot of hitting,” he said wirily. “I’ve got quite a highly demanding role.” The South Australian Rugby Union competition comprises nine premier league teams across the state. Earlier this year Stevan competed as a member of the South Australian team in the National Under 20s

tournament held in Adelaide in March. At the end of the weeklong competition, the SA team finished second overall with a win/loss score of 2/1. Stevan said playing in front of a local crowd was a terrific experience and the high level of rugby talent made for a great competition. It was good weather, good company, good fun and all for a good cause at the Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club’s second Relay on Horseback event on Sunday May 25. Raising funds for the Cancer Council SA through sponsorship of foundation member, Tracey Smith, 19 riders participated in the event, with some travelling from the Southern Flinders Trail Riding Club and the Gawler Trail Riding Club to take part. Last month Tracey participated in the 24-hour Relay for Life on May 2-3 and combined with the $500 raised from the APEC horseback relay, plus the addition of other support and sponsorship, she managed to exceed her fundraising goal of $1,000. “It was fantastic to garner this support for such a great cause given that most people are impacted by cancer in their lifetime, be it through family and friends or themselves,” Tracey said.

“A big thank you to local businesses and individuals who donated goods and vouchers for the raffle, with all proceeds going to the Cancer Council. “Mel Boyce did a terrific job organising the raffle for APEC and it raised a significant amount, which was great. “Thank you also to the Two Wells and the Gawler River CFS crews who came along on the day and provided the BBQ and drinks and to Penny Kazla, CFS, who came and spoke with horse owners about bushfire planning and management specific to horse owners. “This support from other local community groups was much appreciated and a great day was had by all.” Teams of four or more took it in turns to ride one of two set courses at Claire Harniman Reserve, Lewiston, and when not in the saddle, many used the time to catch up with existing friends and meet some new people.

All senior teams have had a great start to the season. It’s a fantastic effort that all grades are in the top two spots (as of May 25). This year we have been able to have a great mix of young talent and experienced players in each team. Lots of girls have gone up a grade and have shown they’ve definitely earned their spot. It’s fantastic to see each team performing this well. We now just need to continue this great form into the finals. This season we had enough girls to fill an away side – this means we have two A5 sides. The away A5 side plays Friday nights when they can. They have taken Balaklava’s spot, who didn’t fill an A5 team this season, so they play whomever Balaklava plays each week. Our two A5 teams actually played off last week, it was a close game but the away side took the honors in the first match. They are both performing so well it looks like they could even meet in the grand final. This is due to many of the A5 girls really pushing for higher grade selection. Thanks to the girls who put their hand up to be in the away team, it was a big decision for them, one that could even pay off for them at the end of the year. A big thanks to Juanita Webster for putting her hand up to coach this team, it’s a big commitment especially when she has her son Blake playing junior footy. The girls wore pink and black knee-high socks to support the McGrath foundation on the weekend. Not sure how red will look with the pink, but it’s all for a great cause! We’d like to thank the committee and coaches for a great effort so far, especially as there have been many extra meetings, etc. required due to many factors, including the large number of girls that came out to trials and tough selection decisions. It’s exciting to see we could have a very successful season. Let’s keep up the great attendance at training and work hard on and off the court to make sure we are all still up the top at the end of the season.

Two local clay target shooters attended the National Clay Target Championships in Wagga Wagga, NSW recently as members of the South Australian state team. Young Lower Light residents, Angus and Jack Tapscott, competed in the championships from April 6-11, with Angus competing in the State Junior Team, which came 5th overall in a close competition resulting in a score of 71/75, and Jack a member of the sub-junior team in his first-ever national event. In the Champion of Champions event, where competitors shoot 25

double barrel, 25 single barrel and 25 point score, Jack came equal third with a result of 119/125. Proud mum, Marie, said he had a very exciting shoot-off and shot a perfect score to win the bronze medal, adding both boys shot personal bests in every event they competed in and overall had a great experience. South Australia’s veteran team placed first at the championships in their section, with an impressive score of 75/75. South Australia had a total of 29 shooters representing the state for the week with several medals being won.

Semi finals just around the corner! Report: Paul Schmelzkopf

How quickly the year goes and we find ourselves with only a few weeks left in the 2014 summer basketball season. In our younger competition, we have five teams with only one game separating the three teams vying for third and fourth positions before the finals commence. Rockets and Flames have proven to be strong teams with a blend of experience and new players and have set up a strong position, first and second, on the premiership table and are due to meet in the second semifinal. Hawks and Lightning Bolts will meet in the second semifinal as Lions recently had a bye. In the older competition, Titans and KAOS are setting the pace and will meet in the first semi final, while Slammers and Wildcats are hoping to upset the favourites. DP Boyz, The Mixers and Xavier Riot have all had their moments but have not been able to be consistent, due largely to the numbers of new players introduced into their teams Our finals commence on Monday June 16 with semi finals. The grand final will be two weeks later on June 30. Seventh consecutive challenge win The last month of golf has culminated in the players travelling up to Hamley Bridge for the bi-annual Hamley Bridge/Two Wells Challenge. The Hamley course was in the best condition it has ever been in. Two Wells once again triumphed to make it four in a row. Seventeen players fronted from Two Wells, which was quite pleasing. Club captain, Paul Shields bounced back from his NAGA the previous week and put together a fine round scoring 39 points, to take out A grade from Robert Hogg and Ian Smith. B grade was taken out by Neil ‘Bluey’ Bowden with a great score of 38 points. In second place and returning to some form was Hans Linford, followed by Jeoff Spackman. After all had finished, the barbecue tea was demolished and scores tallied, –Two Wells had won the day with an average of 34.06 to Hamley’s 32.85. A great day was had by all and we sincerely thank Hamley for their hospitality. No doubt they will be trying their hardest to knock us off in the return match at Two Wells on August 9. It has been great to see most of the weekly spoils have been shared around this month, but Robert Hogg and Gary Payne have continued some good play

and Hans Linford has started to find some much needed form. The Ambrose was also a great day this month, which saw our biggest field of the year with 28 players. These are great numbers but more players would certainly be welcomed. Kathy Stubing and Leanne Cannizzaro have put in some superb scoring in the ladies’ Tuesday competition, with 41 points and nett 70 respectively to take out the main prize in a couple of key competitions this month. I’m sure the girls will be looking for more of these throughout the upcoming Club Championships. If you would like to join us and try and tame our challenging little course and have a great day, visit the club this Saturday. Golf starts at 11am with tee offs until around 12.30pm and everyone in before 5pm, for presentation of the day’s prizes and a chance to take home the much sought after Virginia Meat Store meat tray raffles. Ladies also play on Tuesdays around 9.15am and new members are always welcome. The men also have a Thursday competition from 9.15am usually followed by a BBQ lunch and a couple of beers

Two Wells Football Club senior football report WITH NEVILLE SECCAFIEN A grade assistant coach

Roosters’ perched at the top The footy season has kicked off with a few changes of personnel in both the A and B grade. The biggest change in the reserves is the appointment of Ben Arnold as coach; taking over from Matthew Gameau, who has called it a day. The A grade has seen the departure of a couple a premiership players, namely Brad Fitzgerald and Tim Hines, to other leagues. These losses have been offset however by some good recruiting in the off season, with the enlistment of Nathan Rose and Lee Henderson, along with new resident Toby Bowman, who walked into the club looking for a game, all of whom have had some SANFL experience. The start of the season saw a good first-up hard fought win to the A grade against last year’s premiers, Mallala, running out winners by 21 points, with the reserves just going down by three points on the day. Since then the A grade has progressed to a 5-1 win-loss ratio, to be sitting on the top of the premiership ladder (as of May 24), with the only loss being to Virginia

at their home ground where, unfortunately, the talented Jimmy Morrison sustained a season ending knee injury. The reserves side has also progressed nicely since their initial loss to be sitting in second spot on the ladder, with four wins and two losses. The good form of the A grade has seen nine Two Wells players selected in the APFL association squad to try out for a place in the 23-man team to play in the Landmark Cup Carnival on the June long weekend at Kadina, playing against Yorke Peninsula, North Eastern and Northern Areas Associations. The nine players selected were Lee Allmond, Ned Seccafien, Tallan Leighton, Andrew Hardiman, Anthony Pontt, Sam O’Brien, Lee Henderson, Ben Slattery and Dylan Wise. Congratulations to these guys and good luck. The club invites everyone to come along and support local footy. You’ll be treated to some great sports skills and a terrific atmosphere and have the chance to indulge in the club’s recent clubroom redevelopment.
