Candy rides to Tamworth stardom

Two Wells & Districts

September 2014

Lewiston horsewoman, Candy Michaelis, returned from the Australian Barrel Horse Associations’ national championships in Tamworth last month with more experience and the drive to do even better at the industry’s major horse event later in the year. The Tamworth event, a first stand-alone event for the barrel racing association separate from the more prominent rodeo circuit, saw Candy compete against almost 250 other riders from across the country. The event was also live streamed to more than 4000 people around the world. Upon her trusty 11-year-old quarter horse Ransom, Candy was one of seven South Australian riders at the August 22-24 event and had to compete at five other barrel racing events just to qualify for the championships. Impressively she won all five qualifying events. In Tamworth Candy finished in the top 50, placing 33rd overall, saying if she hadn’t knocked over a drum on one of the turns she would have placed a lot higher. Following the championships Candy and Ransom have been invited to take part in the Equitana Australian Open Barrel Racing Championships in Melbourne on Friday November 21. This premier barrel racing event will feature only the best 25 barrel racers in Australia, an impressive achievement for the local rider. It’s an extremely expensive exercise to participate in this event and Candy would be very appreciative of any financial support by emailing Tracey Smith on integrity@ baonline.com.au. Liberty gets the nod Bec O’Brien reports:

THE Two Wells residential development earmarked for the north of the town is one step closer following approval of the first stage of its proposed village, Liberty, recently. This approval also includes

the Council Development assessment Panel (CDAP) has now given the green light for the first stage of the larger Liberty village to go ahead. Liberty’s first stage will consist of 354 allotments for residential liv-

ing, with its smaller village, Eden, incorporating 235 allotments. DCM infrastructure and planning general manager, Gary Mavrinac, said the planning consent highlighted the commitment to the project by all parties involved.

“Consent for stage one of Liberty signifies commitment by all parties as well as a commitment to the community to ensure the growth of the town,” Mr Mavrinac said. Continued page 5.

it’s a very important time in our lives.” Eddie says the redevelopment of the Two Wells town centre is also something he supports and is looking forward to progressing should he be elected in November. “This will be a catalyst for the growth of the whole area,” he said. “It will help grow the community and that’s my platform; that people must be assured that this is about investing in the whole area, including Mallala, Dublin, Lewiston and Two Wells. “We’re all included in this exciting future as a whole, not separate.” Eddie believes Two Wells in particular is well positioned geographically for developmental growth but stresses this growth must be carried throughout the council area. He says development should be considered in a timely order and only if it’s progressive. “I’m for the development of the towns but in a timely order,” he said. “So, when it presents itself and there’s an opportunity, we should act on that only if it’s progressive.” Always with the community at heart, Eddie hopes his ability to look at the big picture and get along with those around him, will stand him in good stead at this year’s elections.

Current District Council of Mallala deputy mayor and Two Wells ward councillor, Mark Wasley, has decided not to re-nominate for this year’s local government elections. Below Mark gives us an insight into his term representing residents in the Two Wells ward and the reasons behind his decision:

echo 3 Working party formed, core samples taken, all in the name of…

Saving Salt Creek

Eighteen months after the Salt Creek Remediation Working Party (SCRWP) was formed, the first on-ground works have commenced to bring back the former recreational amenity of the creek at Middle Beach. The working party, comprising four community representatives in partnership with representatives of District Council of Mallala, have taken core samples from the bed of Salt Creek to determine the type, depth and volume of material that has clogged the creek over the past several decades. SCRWP members John Drexel and Malcolm Frost were joined in the water by co-member and DCM deputy mayor Mark Wasley, and sediment-coring specialist Bobbie Rice, on Tuesday August 12 to take nine core samples spread over a distance of 350m of the creek bed. On-shore assistance was provided by Wayne Hage and Andrew Stewart. Mr Drexel said the coring device comprised a petrol-driven vibrator attached to three-metre hollow tubes that were sunk in the creek bed until stopped by hard material. “Most people familiar with the creek expected the tubes to sink to their full depth but, surprisingly, the thickest sediment was found to be only 1.5m, near the old boat ramp,” he said. “Below that was hard clay of the original creek bed, probably belonging to what is known geologically as the Glanville Formation, a clay-siltshellbed unit estimated at around 125 000 years old. “West of the old ramp the original creek bed is covered by as little as a half-metre of shellgrit, while around the ramp shellgrit up to 1m thick lies over a half-metre layer of brown mud. “East of the ramp, shellgrit is up to 1.5m thick mixed with dead seagrass and some mud. Mr Drexel, formerly principal geologist with the State Government, believes most of the shellgrit in the creek originated from storm-surge erosion of the shellgrit foredune and adjacent beach deposits. The brown mud was most likely eroded from the surface of the open

lagoon area inside the mangroves, he added. Sediment cores taken from the creek have been stored at Mr Drexel’s Middle Beach shack awaiting further analysis. The SCRWP, which also includes Foreshore Advisory Committee president Barb Reid, Two Wells Regional Action Team president Eddie Stubing, Councillor Steve Jones, Mallala Council General Manager, Infrastructure & Planning Services Gary Mavrinac, and Mallala Council Strategic Projects Coordinator, Infrastructure & Planning Services Carol Muzyk, is planning to remediate the creek by removing as much recently deposited sediment as possible. “At least two potential methods of excavation are feasible, and this is where it is hoped that University of South Australia students can assist with projects such as cost-benefit analysis and surveying,” Mr Drexel said. “The volume of sediment in the creek needs to be estimated, along with an assessment of areas where it can be reused. “Two potential sites are the old shellgrit pit at the north end of the beach, and the Stage 2 carpark immediately east of the new boat ramp.” The SCRWP is also looking to the future, particularly with respect to an influx of new residents when the Hickinbotham residential development comes to fruition on the northern side of Two Wells. Apart from returning the creek to its former depth to allow better boating access, the working party is investigating the creation of a water-sports hub at Middle Beach. This will include a salt water swimming pool and separate wading pool refreshed on a regular basis by the tide, landscaping of the creek bank to allow viewing areas and safer access to the water, and BBQ and seating facilities nearby. Mr Drexel said the members of the SCRWP wished to thank former DCM chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto, for his enthusiastic participation and input to the project over the past 18 months.

Two Wells Echo, September, 2014

echo 5 A 20-hectare horticulture greenhouse development received council approval last week, which isn’t really big news, until you consider it is being built in the arid desert near Port Augusta. LES PEARSON reports:

THe current Sundrop Farms pilot operation near Port Augusta, a greenhouse amongst the desert.

Sea food production possible A GREENHOUSE project utilising seawater to grow produce near Port Augusta could potentially be mimicked in the Upper Gulf St Vincent, according to Regional Planning Directions consultant, Henri Mueller. Mr Mueller, who previously worked at the District Council of Mallala, assisted as an independent consultant with Port Augusta council’s Community Planner in the assessment process of the recently approved project. Sundrop Farms lodged the application to construct eight greenhouses, built in four five-hectare modules, providing a growing area of 20 hectares. The greenhouses are supported by state of the art technology and infrastructure for solar thermal energy generation, plus related facilities within the boundaries of a 380 hectare pastoral property located down the road from its existing 0.2 hectare pilot operation. The Sundrop Farms greenhouse project harnesses the sun’s energy to desalinate seawater to produce freshwater for irrigation, produce electricity to power the greenhouse and provide the energy to heat and cool the greenhouse. It is a complex process to explain but here goes: a field of mirrors reflect the sun’s light onto a solar thermal tower, which absorbs heat. The tower contains a boiler to generate steam, which is condensed

The solar thermal infrastructure will heat a closed loop system of hot water that heats another closed looptransferring heat to the greenhouses in winter by circulating through the internal pipework. Some of the stored heat will also be used to distil seawater in two multiple effect distillation units (MED’s) that distil seawater into fresh water to satisfy the operational needs of the project. From this point, Mr Mavrinac said council would continue to work with Hickinbotham to further the development, including initialising infrastructure requirements as set out in the development deed, which incorporates the construction of a roundabout at the intersection of Old Port Wakefield Road and Mallala Road. Hickinbotham Group managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, has welcomed the approval, saying the company was “heartened that council’s report prepared by planning staff described the application as ‘…a well planned expansion of the existing Two Wells Township’.” “This approval is an exciting

project milestone,” Mr Hickinbotham said. “It brings Liberty’s staged land division for these allotments one step closer.” The approval follows many months of council and state government agencies thoroughly assessing the development application to ensure it ‘ticks the boxes’. To progress to the next stage of the Liberty development Hickinbotham will need to achieve full development approval, which Mr Hickinbotham says the company will strive to continue to work with council to do so. “The Two Wells township expansion will create more than 3,000 regional jobs during the next

Pipeline potential for Bolivar water access Les Pearson reports:

Wakefield Health Under Threat The Abbott government is intent on taxing all Australian families to go to the doctor. The GP Tax of $7 per visit is a broken promise and an unfair impost.

DISTRICT Council of Mallala has started early project discussions with SA Water to eventually provide the district with up to 20 gigalitres of winter water per year, suitable for crop irrigation. Council agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) regarding the possible supply of treated recycled water on Monday night. DCM acting CEO, Peter Sellar (right), said it was an early but significant step for the project, which has the potential to generate industrial growth in the district. The initial supply would start at eight gigalitres and eventually grow to the full 20 gigalitres. An SA Water spokesperson said the MOU would require the council to transport the water from Bolivar during SA Water’s non-peak period (winter and shoulder months). “Once transported, council would be responsible for the storage of the water,” the spokesperson said.

“If it were to go ahead, it has the potential to create a huge benefit to the district.” - Peter Sellar

“SA Water understands council is looking at a number of alternatives to achieve this outcome.” Mr Sellar said the MOU was not a binding commitment but did indicate council’s initial support of the project. “The agreement says we think it’s a good idea, it’s got merit, let’s see where we go from here,” he explained.

“If it were to go ahead, it has the potential to create a huge benefit to the district. “Much depends on how fast we can get the project under way and how much water is provided but the project offers all sorts of possibilities.” Part of council’s role will be identifying potential project partners and consumers of the water, while assisting SA Water

At a time when chronic disease is increasing and with an ageing population, governments should be investing in primary care, not creating barriers for patients to see GP’s. Individuals across Wakefield will be forced to fork out an estimated additional $262, and a family of four $1048 annually to visit the doctor and receive medicines under the Liberals’ plan. This is bad, lazy policy, based on lies. Tony Abbott lied before the election when he said there would be no new taxes, and Joe Hockey is lying after the election to try to justify this broken promise. with putting together a development proposal. Funding support from nearby councils and government bodies will also require investigation. Mr Sellar said the MOU was a great starting point for a project discussed at council level for a number of years, predominantly by former DCM CEO, Charles Mansueto, who finished at council last week.

Author visits Two Wells Talented South Australian illustrator and author, Sally Heinrick, visited Two Wells Primary School last month as part of Book Week celebrations. Sally grew up in Adelaide and has spent most of her life here, but has also lived in Singapore and Malaysia. These overseas influences are reflected in a number of her books, including the popular “The Most Beautiful Lantern”. Sally has written more than 20 books, and spoke

with students at the school on Thursday August 21. She gave an insight into the inspiration behind her books and the more technical side of illustration, which many students found fascinating. “I spend so much time on my own, it’s nice to get out and meet my audience,” Sally said. “These are the people I’m writing for and it’s really great to be able to connect with them and get their feedback. “I get a lot out of sessions such as these.” TWPS librarian, Anna

White, said the visit by Sally capped off a great week of activities celebrating this year’s Book Week theme of Connect to Reading, Reading to Connect. Other highlights included the book fair, parade down the main street and the national reading hour event. “It’s been fabulous, absolutely fantastic,” Ms White said. “The students’ enthusiasm is always really high and they really get involved in the activities.”

Bev was a quiet, unassuming lady who enjoyed the simple things in life. She had many pets, loved knitting and craft, and was an active member of both the Country Women’s Association and Red Cross. She was also a one-eyed Port Adelaide and Port Power supporter and member. Her music tastes included many Elvis Presley tapes and CDs. She also enjoyed her holidays away. One very special holiday was when she went with daughter Jo-Anne and her son-in-law, Andrew, to California and Disneyland. Bev collected memorabilia of all her different interests and displayed it at her home for all to see and enjoy. Bev lived a full life, touching the hearts of many people. In earlier years she fostered children and also worked for Aboriginal legal rights as part of the Aboriginal Visitors Scheme. When she moved to Two Wells we were lucky to have her join Red Cross, as she was a very reliable, calm and helpful lady. She was soon helping out at trading tables, selling raffle tickets and generally doing anything that was needed, with no fuss. We were dismayed to hear she was ill in hospital, never thinking that we would soon be attending her funeral. Bev leaves behind many friends and relations, her two sons Stephen and Bryan, daughter Jo Anne and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will miss her so much. Baker Rd Ford Upgrade Last week, Road Safety Minister Tony Piccolo announced that State Black Spot funding will go ahead to improve the Baker Road Ford.

10,000 reasons to get growing

Virginia Primary School is growing its own vegetables and garden produce thanks to a $10,000 grant and involvement in a national program. The school won the grant as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program and deputy principal and garden project leader, Voula Pounendis, believes it will be a fantastic and strong educational experience for its students. Ms Pounendis said the program would provide children at the school with opportunities to grow into lifelong learners and better connect with the world around them. “Virginia is a market gardening community, therefore we are hoping to strengthen and build upon our community connection by inviting parents in to share their expertise and knowledge,” she added. “The children are looking forward to planning menus around the fresh, seasonal produce growing in their garden.” At present, the school has planted lettuces, broccoli, cauliflowers, carrots and a wide variety of herbs and is hoping to build upon this project by creating a specialised kitchen to support the program in the future. “The students are really excited about not only watching their produce grow but are looking forward to learning about the ins and out of looking after a garden including pest control, watering, and expanding their knowledge around seasonal vegetables and coming up with recipes that include our garden veggies,” Ms Pounendis said. “The Stephanie Alexander program is aligned to the Australian Curriculum and has lessons set out for classes to follow which are integrated across the areas of learning ranging from writing procedures in English to working within budgets in maths to learning about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle in health.” The program will be led by staff members Deb Smith (school support officer), Simon Costello (grounds person) and Ms Pounendis, as well as Sam Goggins (parent), and a group of Year 7 coordinators but the school is keen for anyone who is interested in being involved to contact them on 8380 9292. Likewise, if you are able to donate in-kind support, or money to help with things like constructing a fence around the garden or in particular, putting up a garden shed, the school would appreciate any offers of assistance. We have all experienced frustration with the ford, its frequent closures and how increasingly unsafe it has become.

Students print in 3D

Students at Virginia Primary School are being encouraged to be creative and innovative designers, producing 3D models of story characters, mathematical shapes and creative constructions thanks to the school’s recent involvement in a pilot program based around a special printer. Virginia Primary School has entered a three-year partnership with Adelaide based company, Maker’s Empire, who donated a unique 3D printer to the school, and principal, Ilia Tsoutouras, couldn’t be more excited. Always looking for ways to extend learning and actively improve students’ engagement, Mr Tsoutouras said the school needed to ensure it provided broad opportunities for students to be life-long learners. “Many of the jobs that exist today will be obsolete by the time our children enter the workforce,” he said. “As a school we are excited by the creative and innovative opportunities 3D design and printing brings.” Mr Tsoutouras suggested students might write a story in literacy and then create a 3D model of one of

their characters, or in maths, when discussing space and 3D objects they would be able to physically print a model of a particular shape and hold it in their hand. Using the specially designed iPad app meant students as young as four could access the technology, he added. “It’s the way of the future and I think it provides another experience for our children. “We need to create as many opportunities as we can before they get to high school. We want children who are problem solvers, children who are researchers and critical thinkers. The school received the 3D printer the first week of this term, with staff taking part in a special training day run by Maker’s Empire to get familiar with the design app, lesson plans aligned with the Australian Curriculum and the 3D printing process. “We bring the fun, excitement and engagement of easily designing and printing in 3D to prepare our kids for the jobs of tomorrow,” Mr Soong said.

The Two Wells Echo covered this issue in July last year. 634 people signed up to the petition organised by Renata Conti, Gianna Russo and myself to draw attention for the need to upgrade the crossing. Our community was willing to fight and take a stand to improve this important crossing. I welcome the announcement by Minister Piccolo to invest around $16 million over this financial year to improve South Australian roads.

Funds allocated to the ford will go towards upgrading the culverts, road formation width, signage and other safety improvements. We worked together and had a very good result to improve our roads. I look forward to listening to what issues are important to you. Please feel free to give my team a call on 8280 5144 if you want to have a chat.

he Virginia Karate Club is only a relatively young club in the scheme of things, but it’s already proving its philosophy and training are giving members the chance to improve confidence, patience, strength, and fitness as well as potentially represent the state at competition level. Established 11 years ago, by Virginia Karate Club (VKC) sensei Matt Johnson, the club trains at the Virginia Community Recreation Centre Mondays and Fridays. Students from the club competed at the Australian Karate Federation National Championships held in Perth from August 1-3 in the disciplines of kata or kumite and had a strong representation, with nine members selected for the state team. Matt, who was the South Australian Karate Team head coach, said a third of the 32-member state team came from the Virginia-based club, with students as young as 11 right up to 33 years of age competing. And the South Australia team did well, bringing home eight medals.

A community dinner was held last week to farewell outgoing District Council of Mallala chief executive officer, Charles Mansueto. Held at the recently renovated Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Clubrooms, about 25 people enjoyed a lovely three-course meal in a warm and relaxed setting. Two Wells Regional Action Team vice president, Bev Smith-Trim, led proceedings, with many present taking to the microphone to voice their thanks for Mr Mansueto’s efforts in the district over the past five years. Talented musician, Mark Smith-Trim, played a few numbers on his trumpet throughout the evening, with an inspiring rendition of Frank Sinatra’s 1969 hit “My Way” bringing a smile to all. Mr Mansueto finished at DCM on August 22 and takes up a position with the City of Salisbury in September.

Two local educators have been recognised in this year’s South Australian Excellence in Public Education Awards. Two Wells Community Children’s Centre director, Sarah Donovan-Wormald and kindergarten teacher, Hayley Braidwood, were both nominated for the awards, albeit in different categories. Sarah has 14 years experience in the early years education field, 12 as a director and the past six at TWCCC. She has been named a finalist in the Pre-school Leader of the Year category. Hayley has been teaching for four-and-a-half years, starting at TWCCC in 2012 and was nominated in the Early Years Teacher of the Year category. It is the first time staff at the centre have been represented at the awards. Congratulations girls!

Refurbished driveway signs at the entrance to the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre have given the area a lovely boost recently. Lewiston resident, Alan Handley, volunteered to upgrade the centre’s original signs, saying the process was a pleasure and only took a couple of weeks to complete. The Two Wells RSL has also lent a hand, offering to cover the cost of the paint for the project. TWCCC director, Sarah Wormald, said the efforts of both Alan and the local RSL were much appreciated by the centre and made for a colourful and inviting entrance to the site. Bookweek bonanza

A colourful sight of hundreds of characters from much loved books, nursery rhymes and movies greeted motorists, pedestrians and shop owners along Two Wells’ main street last month. The metamorphous was all part of Book Week celebrations by students and staff at Two Wells primary school, reflecting this year’s theme of Connect to Reading; Reading to Connect. The annual parade through the streets of the town is a highlight of the year for many students, and lots of parents and residents lined the street to wave them by. Afterwards everyone gathered

in the school’s gym and watched as each class paraded past and showed off their fun, clever and inspiring costumes. There were witches and pirates galore, fairies, villains, lots of people dressed as horse riders and every kind of superhero you can imagine. More than a few were dressed as Princess Elsa from the popular children’s movie Frozen, but there was also Alice in Wonderland, Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz and Where’s Wally. The parade was just one of many activities throughout the week in recognition of Book Week.

Lewiston Playground well underway At the Lewiston playground the word “engaged” is almost something to jump for joy about. There’ll be no more quick stops for parents or crossing of the legs as, after months of work, the site’s toilet is now officially open. A new barbecue area, shelter, tables and seating are also set to be completed in coming weeks. DCM strategic infrastructure coordinator, Paul Cleghorn, said the works were the first stage of a three-stage project for the old school site, and with recent government funding of $80,000, which was matched by council, he is excited by the developments planned for the area. Mr Cleghorn said while the playground had been in place for a few years now, the site did not have a toilet, something council has been working to remedy for many months. A unisex toilet facility,

with baby change table and wheelchair/pram access is now in use, with an easyaccess paved path and much needed lighting ensuring the area is well illuminated. A free electric barbecue area is soon to be up and running and hopefully by the end of this month residents will be able to enjoy a muchimproved facility. “Work is definitely progressing,” Mr Cleghorn said. “We’re inviting people to come and use it, to experience the new improvements and enjoy the rustic sort of feel we’re trying to create here.” As well as the physical structures going up, Mr Cleghorn said DCM’s horticultural team would be working to create an irrigated lawned area around the playground and garden beds of native plants. Closing the playground site to vehicle traffic, installing secure fencing and building an adjacent car park are also on the cards in the future.

Tiles makeover Schlodder Shelter Dublin’s much loved and iconic Schlodder Shelter - which was erected nearly 15 years ago in its current position to honour the service by local firefighters in the district– is undergoing an extensive makeover following a $15,000 grant. And local residents have been heavily involved in the project; designing and creating unique tiles, which reflect their connection to the district, and will be a feature of the new shelter. Situated in the town’s main street, the shelter is named after Milton Schlodder, who donated land for the town’s inaugural fire service in 1966, and has over

the years become rundown and neglected. But members of the Dublin History Group have been working hard to raise money, garner support and obtain funding to improve the facilities, and recently the group was successful in obtaining a grant from the Virginia branch of Bendigo Bank to the tune of $15,000, with District Council of Mallala also offering $5000 and labour to support the project. DHG secretary and long-time resident, Pat Thompson, is excited by the impending improvements, saying for many years the shelter has been a stopping

place for travelers to take a break and a chance for local groups to meet, catch up and put on popular sausage sizzles. Pat is proud of the efforts of the locals who have worked together to make the project a reality and is a big believer in the adage that anything is possible. “To me it just proves that any dream/thought, no matter how small or large it may be, is achievable with sheer determination and some work,” Pat said. “It is the same with the history group, I am just so proud of how that has grown and what has been achieved over the past seventeen years from just four of

us local Dublin residents getting together. “There is an ad on the TV that states ‘from little things, big things grow’ and that is just so very true.” DCM strategic infrastructure coordinator, Paul Cleghorn, said all the approvals have been done for the new shelter, with a stone wall to be constructed, incorporating a tiled wall area, new tables and seating as well as a weather proof roof. The old concrete tables and chairs will be reused around the Dublin township, with work set to start on the shelter in September.

South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival was celebrated in August providing an opportunity for local artists of all mediums to showcase their work. The District Council of Mallala once again supported the festival and celebrated with an official opening by mayor, Duncan Kennington, at the Two Wells Public Library on Monday August 4. Eleven artists have submitted a range of works in its ‘Outside the Square’ art exhibition, which incorporated a variety of genres and mediums in categories including traditional, modern and contemporary. Some artworks were for sale while others were on display only. ABOVE: At the opening, from left, artists Jenna Dunlop, Ellen Steyn, Alexander Boril and DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington. Baker Road ford upgrade The Baker Road ford on the edge of Lewiston will receive much needed improvements following news of state government road safety funding last month. Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, who has been campaigning for the past couple of years to improve the crossing, welcomed the announcement, saying the $278,000 will be spent on improving the approach sight distance and road formation width to the floodway, upgrading culverts, signage and delineation. The funding comes from the $16 million invested from the State Black Spot Program, Responsive Road Safety Program and Shoulder Sealing Program. Mrs Vlahos said the announcement was a major victory for motorists in the electorate. “It is quite obvious to anybody that travels near Virginia and Lewiston that the ford needed an upgrade,” she said. “The frequent closures was costing families and local businesses time and money. “For over more than a year, I have been working with the community to put the pressure on Playford Council to prioritise the crossing. “Mayor Glen Docherty was using the State Black Spot program as an excuse, but now there is nowhere to hide. “In contrast, Mallala Council has been far more supportive.” In late June last year, Mrs Vlahos joined local residents Renata Conti and Gianna Russo to organise a petition with 634 signatories calling on the City of Playford to fund half the cost of upgrading the crossing. As a local horticulturalist and owner of Adelaide Hydro Fresh, Mrs Russo said that improving the crossing will help local businesses. “My husband Angelo moves our machinery between Virginia and Two Wells and we try to use the crossing as much as possible,” Mrs Russo said. “Upgrading the crossing will help minimise the impact on moving heavy machinery and assists in reducing travel time and business costs.” Work is expected to start at the beginning of 2015, subject to final design assessments.

MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor and Lewiston ward Councillor

Duncan Kennington

Quiz night enjoyed at Parham At the Baker Road ford are L–R: Angelo Russo, Leesa Vlahos, Dominic and Mary Trimboli.

Money donated to local clubs Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch was pleased to make a donation to the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club of $1000 last month, as well as a $500 donation towards the community youth bus. This month police are targeting speeding, misuse of motor vehicles and drink drivers. If you see something suspicious please call 131444 or the Two Wells Police to report. The next Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Tuesday, September 9 from 7.30pm in the Two Wells RSL, Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells.

Blue Light

The Two Wells Blue Light group would like to extend a very big thank you to Senior Constable John Winsor for his support and efforts as the former chairperson of the committee and would also like to welcome the newly appointed chairperson, constable Josh Silvy.

With Lisa Allen Thank you to all members of the committee for their commitment to their positions this year. The Two Wells Blue Light committee was happy to donate $250 each to the Two Wells Pony Club and Two Wells Tennis Club last month. We were also happy to donate $500 to the Two Wells Scout Group, sharing monies raised from our discos back into the community. The last Blue Light Disco was held on Friday August 29 from 7pm until 9.30pm, and with plenty of food, drinks and accessories a good time was had by all. Are you looking to volunteer for Neighbourhood Watch and Two

Wells Blue Light? These are community programs which welcome all people interested in keeping Two Wells and Lewiston safe. Two Wells Blue Light supports the youth in our area. Joining the committee is a great way to have a say in keeping our community safe and providing opportunities for our youth. Volunteer work looks great on your resume and can provide career opportunities and create new friendships. Many people don’t volunteer as it’s hard to find time but all our committee requires is a two-hour meeting once a month and five, four-hour discos, a year. We really hope to see some new faces; we also welcome police cadets or officers in the area to volunteer at our Blue Light Discos. With a growing number of children attending we aim to continue to make our discos a great night for all.

Calling citizen scientists for local research The original vegetation of the Northern Adelaide Plains was predominately open grasslands and grassy woodlands but since European settlement native vegetation has been subjected to broad scale clearing resulting in only 14 per cent of preEuropean vegetation cover remaining within the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges region. Mallala and Playford area are within this region with only three per cent of the original vegetation remaining and much of this on roadsides. Wouldn’t it be great if we as a community could measure what wildlife live within our regions and share this knowledge with other people? Well this could be the answer; I recently attended a Bio-Blitz held at Carisbrook Park in Salisbury. Bio Blitz is a project that is run in partnership with University of South Australia, Adelaide Museum and Adelaide University just to name a few. The aim of this program is to encourage people like you and me to become citizen scientists by collecting data on the types of flora and fauna that live within our region and Two Wells Echo, September, 2014

With Mark Webb sharing this information with academic scientists whom are committed to the protection of our ecological communities. I and a number of parents and children were involved in several workshops including bats, birds, water bugs and frogs, just to name a few, learning about the wildlife around us with environmental scientists. Our regions boast a number of newly developed ecological environments including schools, wetlands, reserves and your own back yard, all provide the rich diversity that our wildlife depend on. Young or old, we can all be citizen scientists within our region, and share our experiences with the University of South Australia students and scientists involved in this project.

They will collate and analyse the data, and the information gathered will provide a greater picture of the state of our regions’ecological health. For further info please contact: Citizen Science - Research - University of South Australia website.Together we can all make a difference to our environment. On Saturday September 13 from 1pm - 4.30pm a Birds, Bats & Biodiversity Insect Hotel workshop, will be held at the Playford Operations Centre, 12 Bishopstone Road, Davoren Park. For further information please contact the City of Playford , Perry Brampton, City Operations on 8256 0410. Our regions coastal landscapes are one of our greatest environmental assets. These landscapes have evolved over thousands of years and remain largely untouched. Unfortunately this cannot be said for the coastal environments along the Adelaide coastline. With uncontrolled urban development the environment is always

the first to go, but there is one such coastal landscape that has withstood the pressures from urban development. The Tennyson dunes, a small but very important fragmented coastal landscape is one of the last remaining coastal sand dunes remaining within the inner Adelaide region. I recently received an open invitation for anyone interested in viewing and learning about one of Adelaide’s most significant pre-European barrier costal dunes. The Tennyson Dunes is located near West Lakes. This is an opportunity to learn about the geological importance of the Tennyson Dunes and of the plants, animals and birdlife that live and depend on this unique ecological hot spot. Tennyson Dunes open day Sunday September 28 from 11am–2 pm. Walks leave from the Tennyson Dunes car park, Military Road, Tennyson. For further information contact www.facebook.com/TennysonDunesGroup.

The ‘Team Duncan’ quiz team re-formed for the Parham Social Club quiz night on Saturday July 26. As usual the meals were great and the questions tricky. Our quizmasters, Georgina Dobson (president) and Raelene Horgan kept us entertained with searching, and often humorous, questions. One member of our team, Jill, won a random prize. Our ranking skyrocketed from wooden spooners last time, to third. Sky’s the limit next time. On Monday August 4 I attended the SALA Festival opening at the Two Wells library. Eleven artists entered exhibits with the theme being ‘Outside the Square’: Alexander Boril Jenna Dunlop Marie Galbraith Keith Krieg Greg McPharlin Suzanne Olds Lynda Pedersen Suzette Rugolo Jen Searle Ellen Steyn and Pat Thompson I had the pleasure of presenting certificates to those present, cutting the cakes, and eating more than my share of the kit-kats. Last month I also had the pleasure of speaking at the Two Wells Ageing in Style Expo. This was the first of its kind in our district and was part of a collaborative project between the Barossa, Light, Gawler, and Mallala councils. The expo aims to provide information on growing older, options to assist people in remaining at home, and a variety of local community groups, which one can join. The Two Wells Scout Group assisted in preparing the food, which was provided by the Seniors Collaborative Action Project. ‘Passive Minds’ provided the music and the Magic Moments Dance Group performed. Lynette Seccafien and Janine Harding assisted with all round super-duper organisation and question answering. One of the pleasures of living in Lewiston is the occasional flocks of galahs that fly overhead. The pictured galah (top) often stops for a chat and a rest with my pet galahs: sometimes for an hour or two.

How to age in style

Providing information to local senior-aged residents and their families about staying active, looking after their health, meeting people and living in their homes longer was the general theme of the first-ever Ageing In Style Expo held in Two Wells last month. Featuring an impressive 36 stalls, the expo showcased everything from mobility equipment to craft activities to in-home services to local sporting groups, and was held in the Two Wells Community Centre on Thursday August 14. The event was funded by Home and Community Care Collaborative (HACC) and organised by District Council of Mallala as part of the Seniors Collaborative Action Project (SCAP), which has seen similar expos held in Nuriootpa, Gawler and Kapunda recently. Goods and services including arts and crafts activities, aged care home support and home care services, residential care, recreation and fitness activities and mobility equipment were all on show, with DCM community development officer, Lynette Seccafien, saying the event was well received by the community and was a great way for local people to get first-hand information about what was available in the district. “This is the first time we’ve ever done something like this and the reaction from patrons was positive and well received,” Mrs Seccafien said. “The expo showcased a really good mix of information services, support agencies and also local community groups, with the idea being people could see what the district has to offer.” Free blood sugar readings and blood pressure tests were popular with patrons, as was the ‘yellow brick road’ type activity, a free sausage sizzle and Devonshire tea and the broad range of information available at the many stalls. Mrs Seccafien said council, in collaboration with Barossa, Light and Gawler councils, would now assess the expo in the hopes the event can be held on an annual or bi-annual basis.

New seats for sports club New flip-bottom seating erected under the verandah of the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club will be continued further around the oval thanks to a generous donation. Last month members of the Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch Group met with TWF&NSC president, Francis Pellizzari, and vice president, Tony Lange, and presented the club with a $1000 cheque. Mr Pellizzari said the funds were

greatly appreciated and would enable the club to erect more seating along the perimeter fence from the southern end of the clubrooms toward the coaches’ boxes, and possibly in the northern direction as well. In other club news, the annual junior football and netball season wind-up and presentation will be held on Sunday September 21 at the clubrooms from 12pm. Players in football grades including

By TWCG vice-captain, Adam Bail The month of August was highlighted by a fabulous win by Two Wells in our inter-club challenge with Hamley Bridge on August 9. The Hamley boys arrived in force hoping to catch us off guard as we did up their way in the last meeting. The visitors showed strong promise just like this time last year taking four of the NTP’s and one of the long drives. However, as the scores rolled in it was obvious that Two Wells were going well with most scores in the 30’s with Hamley players in the 20’s. The final result was that Two Wells retained the Hamley Challenge Cup and sent the visitors packing after giving them a fine meal and a bit of banter. It was interesting that the Hamley players dominated the shorter holes winning most of the NTP’s – the theory is – no trees in the way. For Two Wells, Yogi Frencken, Robert Hogg and John Ball led the way in A Grade with excellent scores and Steven Kelly and Michael Dimasi did the same in B Grade. With both clubs we had a great showing with 35 players, which is testament to the great respect the clubs have for each other. The final result for the day was Hamley Bridge with an average of 27.58 and Two Wells with an average of 33.38. Congratulations Two Wells that’s five in a row. A big thank you has to go out to all of the committee and members for their efforts in preparing and hosting such a successful day. I’m sure we will head back to Hamley Bridge next year eager to continue the winning streak. Late July also saw the biggest day on the club’s calendar, the Men’s Open Day take place with previous Open Day Champion Bowdie Bradwell from Highercombe taking home the major prize. The day was a terrific day for the club with 53 players from clubs around the mid-north and surrounding areas participating in a fabulous day’s golf and competing for some great prizes. Two Wells players took home many of the major prizes including the B Grade and C Grade Championships. Thank you to our Open Day sponsors without which it wouldn’t be possible to provide such fabulous prizes. The Ladies on Tuesdays have had a huge month also with a great conclusion to the Ladies Club Championships, which saw a repeat of last year’s final between Julie Holland and Kathy Stubing. This year it was Kathy who took home the honours with a 3/2 victory. Both Julie and Kathy have played quite consistently all year and it was no surprise that they were contesting the big one yet again. Congratulations to both players. If you would like to join us and try and tame our challenging little course and have a great day visit the club this Saturday. Golf starts at 11am with tee offs until around 12.30pm and everyone in before 5pm for presentation of the days prizes and a chance to take home the much sought after Virginia Meat Store meat tray raffles. Ladies also play on Tuesdays around 9.15am and new members always welcome. Two Wells Golf Club also has a website, www.twowellsgolfclub.com.au with a wealth of information about the course, competitions, membership information and everything else you need to know. Come out and play! We would love to see you out there. Also a quick reminder the upcoming Sponsors Day is on Sunday September 7 and the Handicap Matchplay Final on September 13. Good golfing everyone. Virginia victorious in local derby Forget Crows versus Port Power, and Freo versus West Coast. The southern derby between Virginia and Two Wells played at Virginia on Saturday in the last minor round game in Adelaide Plains Football League, was always going to be keenly contested, with lots at stake for both teams. Not only were the teams playing for the “Olympic Cup” bragging rights, but more importantly, Two Wells A grade had to win to make the finals. The Virginian Rams were hoping

to impress guests in attendance for a 30 year reunion – 30 years since they defeated Two Wells in the grand final. Two Wells’ finals hopes were dashed as Virginia ran out winners by a comfortable 88 points, thus also taking the “Olympic Cup” honours. This means Virginia now plays Balaklava in the do-or-die second semifinal on Sunday at Lochiel. n Catch up on all the finals action for football and netball every week in the Plains Producer.
