Two Wells hosts first final, but break-in sours success TWO Wells pulled off hosting the club’s first ever grand final with no hiccups on Saturday, October 20, with plenty of volunteers on hand to cater for the crowd of about 3,100 local sports fans. Football club president, Francis Pellizzari, said planning for the event started at the club’s first committee meeting of the year, establishing a grand final sub-committee to get preparations under way. “We were very happy with the day and from all reports, we’ve received no negative feedback, which is pleasing,” he said. “We had a roster system set up for our volunteers and no one let us down, people gave us more time than they were rostered on for, which was also fantastic. “There were some concerns about our car parking but a lot of people don’t know we’ve got hectares of space behind the pine trees, so I think we could have parked 1,000 cars back there if we needed to.” The club handled the food and
drink provisions with relative ease, despite early concerns. “I think the hardest element was the catering part,” Mr Pellizzari said. “By the end of the night, we were selling off hot food at discounted prices, which I think is a good thing, it’s always better to have a bit too much than not enough. “We went through about 600 rolls for salad rolls and hot dogs, about 15 dozen pies and pasties and then there were the chicken burgers as well.” One dampener on the weekend was a break and enter at the club on the following Monday morning. At about 5.30am, unknown offenders jemmied the front glass door to the sports club rooms, forced entry to three offices and removed a small safe containing cash. Mr Pellizzari said it was disappointing but wouldn’t let the theft take the limelight off a successful event. It ends a long year for the club, which also carried out extensive renovations and hosted the Plains Producer Medal count this season.
Peacocks gone wild It isn’t the plains of Africa or India, but a bunch of wild peacocks have been seen pluming their feathers and roaming in the Lewiston area. Believed to be escapees from a pet home nearby, they have since bred, and now appear quite comfortable wandering among homes along the Gilks and Laurie roads. Local Gordon Head, of Gilks Road, said the peacocks first appeared in the area about 12 months ago and are constantly spotted by locals. “They freely roam

CFS: prepare now Following the release of the Southern Australian Bushfire Outlook 2013 to 2014, the Two Wells and district area will be very much a normal fire potential for the upcoming summer. CFS Captain, Adam Harris, attended a meeting last month that analysed the potential threats in our
Sarah McArdle reports:
area for the coming summer. “The predictions are for an average fire season depending on rainfall,” he said. “If we get some rain in the next two months it will stay the same, however, if it is dry the
potential fire hazard will change.” Majority of the state will stay under the same threat, although above normal potential is predicted in the North West Pastoral and Flinders district due to abundant and continuous grass fuels during the above average rainfall since May 2013. Mr Harris said now is the per-
fect time to clean up around your homes by trimming back grass and identifying potential hazards around your property. “Removing dead branches and undergrowth, fallen leaves and long grass, and having clear access for fire trucks, as it slows response if the need arises.”
As a result of previous season’s growth remaining and the rainfall received in the cooler months, normal fire conditions can still cause fast running fires. Two Wells CFS is always looking for volunteers. If you think you may be able to help out contact Adam Harris on 0413 237 036.
New Lions group at Angle Vale officially ordained The Angle Vale Lions was officially chartered into a club at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide on August 31. International President of Lions, Joe Preston, chartered the club and transferred all 20 members into a fully-fledged Lions Club of Angle Vale. The club was established in 2013 by now-president, Dorothy Lewtas, who now looks forward to getting her club immersed into the local community. “We hope to get involved in local projects and help the community wherever we can,” Mrs Lewtas said. “Our current goals are hoping to finding a site to sell our Lions Christmas Cakes, and we will also be selling Lions cakes, fudge and mints.” The Lions Club barbeque will be their main avenue to raise money, which can be hired out for school functions, birthdays or other events. “Our main objective is to raise money by barbeques, we have our
Sarah McArdle reports: own barbeque trailer which can be contracted out.” Dorothy said they are currently focused on the cleaning up the Angle Vale Bridge area and possibly around the cemetery. Dorothy was inducted into the Lions Club of Elizabeth, where she was also President back in 2000, before moving to the Angle Vale area. “I moved to the area and found that there weren’t any Lion Clubs here and the requirements were just that you were an upstanding person and I was interested in the community,” she said. “It took us just 16 months to get the required 20 members to charter a new club, after we established the Angle Vale Lions initially in 2013. “We now have a charter dinner to be held on November 22 at the Munno Para Bowling Club.” Dorothy said the club is always looking for more members to join

Mick Meaney, of Light Council, said unfortunately dumping was becoming more common. “We are seeing an increase in this type of dumping activity, which becomes a costly exercise for us to safely collect and dispose of asbestos.” All residents are asked to take note of any suspicious activity of vehicles on side roads, especially loaded light trucks, utes and trailers.

Mental Health Matters We often talk about our physical health and wellbeing without paying attention to our mental health.
Library hosts romance writer
At times, the symptoms of mental illness can be subtle and hard to detect. However, friends and relatives might be able to detect if something is not right.
Natalie Centenera reports: Love came to town when South Australian ‘rural romance’ writer Tricia Stringer appeared at the Two Wells Bowling club Wednesday 10th September. Tricia was able to provide a wonderful insight into her writing process and the publishing industry in Australia. The bowling club hosted the author for an afternoon tea and the audience was treated to a humorous account of how she came to being a published author after the age of the 40. With writing a book and jumping from a plane at the top of her ‘to do before 40’list, she worked hard to achieve both great feats, and shared her experiences with the gathering. District Council of Mallala Library Services Coordinator, Anne Sawtell, organized the event and was rewarded with a delightful turnout. Tricia revealed that she loved to interact and

She described her own life story as ‘smooth sailing’. After boarding school she met and married her country boy sweetheart, Darryl, and they raised three children. She recently retired from teaching at the start of 2014 and now concentrates on writing full time. She admitted that she has had a happy life, there was “no drama or conflict”, and this, her own experience, “provides the bones” for her books. However, much of her inspiration comes from what she observes around her “I am an observer, a gatherer, I see and hear things and store them away”. “I love to listen to other peoples stories” she explained, “writers always have their ears pricked”. Reading excerpts from her award winning novel ‘Queen of the Road’ which won the Romance Writers of Australia Ruby Award in 2013, and also her new book ‘Riverboat Point’
which is due for release in December, one can sense that she is indeed an observer of people and their individual experiences. Research is vital to her writing, which she thoroughly enjoys, as well as writing about strong female characters. “Writing is terrifying, exciting, solitary and hard work,” she concluded. And that hard work now sees her boast several published books, both for children and adults. After her talk, a few quick questions from the audience were answered and a lucky door prize, a pre-copy of her yet to be released book “Riverboat Point”, was awarded. Mayor, Duncan Kennington, presented Tricia with a gift box of local produce and Tricia then chatted and mingled with the locals. A new character, storyline or, perchance, new location may have been sourced from her visit to Two Wells, we’ll just have to wait and see.

BTR upgrades fleet
GROWING: BTR Excavations staff, pictured in front of the nine new vehicles added to the company’s growing fleet. PICTURES: Lisa Redpath
Local success story moves into overdrive Les Person reports: THE local success story of Angle Vale-based business, BTR Excavations, continues to grow, the company adding nine brand new trucks to its extensive fleet from North East Isuzu recently. It is a far cry from the excavator and backhoe father and son, Barry and Rick Flitter, started with back in 1991. Including Barry and Rick, BTR Excavations now employs 31 staff. They have been customers of North East Isuzu for the entire time, Barry pleased with the ongoing service and relationship from a company with similar familybased origins. North East Isuzu dealer principal, Tony Emanuele, has been with the company for 20 years, taking over mantle from his father, Charlie (deceased), and working in partnership with uncle and company owner, Peter Emanuele. Tony’s brother, Joe, is dealer principal of the IVECO arm of the company, also based on the same site on Waterloo Corner. North East Isuzu also has an engineering service, giving them the capability of designing and building trucks and trailers on-site. The nine new vehicles include six tippers, a service vehicle, crane truck and Flo Con bitumen spreader. Barry said the relationship between the two companies went beyond simply face value.
6 www.twowellsecho.com.au
SERVICE: North East Isuzu staff run through the new features in the cab of one of the tippers. “They’ve got the best priced trucks and the best service,” he said. “By service, that includes all the after purchase support you get. “If we broke down in the desert, they’d probably get there to help quicker than anyone else.” Almost to test the theory, Barry did take on of the Isuzu vehicles through the Simpson Desert a few years ago, but fortunately, he did not break down.
The recent additions to the fleet mark a significant point in BTR Excavation’s history as it continues to go from strength to strength. The company has been providing ongoing contractual services exclusively to the South Australian Water Corporation since privatisation in 1996, developing a long-term business partnership over that time. “We have constructed many
thousands of new water and sewerage connections, water and sewer main extensions and alteration work to existing SA Water assets as required,” Mr Flitter said. “We have undertaken specialist projects and maintenance work for SA Water in many varied locations, often outside of the standard scope of construction work and times.” Amongst those projects include major works, including the Portrush Road upgrade project, Port
Wakefield Road and Northern Expressway upgrades on behalf of SA Water for the Department of Transport. “We were also awarded Elizabeth City Centre mains upgrading project as part of a multi-million dollar upgrading and expansion of the Elizabeth Shopping Centre, involving a major upgrade and expansion of the existing SA Water assets on-site, while still keeping the existing assets on-line during the entire project, as the shopping centre was still in use,” Mr Flitter said. “Our prime directive on the work that we have undertaken from BTR’s inception to the present day is to provide excellent customer service to our prime customer, the SA Water Corporation. “It is for this reason we have specifically engineered our company to servicing SA Water’s needs. “We pride ourselves on community spirit and support our local businesses. “We’re also gold sponsors of children’s charity, Variety, participating in its 4WD Challenge for the past two years, we sponsor several local sporting clubs, including Virginia and Two Wells Football Clubs, and are a corporate sponsor for World Vision.” The 29 staff employed at BTR Excavations also play a major part in the success of the business. “Without the determination and dedication of all involved, this company would not be where it is today,” Mr Flitter said. TONY ABBOTT’S DOUBLE HIT ON THE SICK IN WAKEFIELD
Virginia Primary School science teacher Cathy Lock with students Gabriella Leombruno, Thao Lam, Luke Ronaldo and Jacob Dunne.
Young Einsteins at Virginia Virginia Primary School has been fortunate enough to recently become a part of the national Scientists in Schools Program, educating children with exposure to science in society. The program gives science teachers and students’new ideas and fresh perspectives in the science-teaching field. Adelaide University Scientist Graeme Cook was paired to the school through the program established in 2007. Mr Cook has visited the school twice and given talks to two classes learning about animal rights.Students are currently preparing speeches on the subject. Graeme spoke to the students about animal rights versus animal welfare, which
has given them a balanced view of issues involved.Science teacher Cathy Lock said they are still learning about the program but everyone involved are enjoying it so far. “Graeme has been in to talk to two of the classes about animal welfare, as they are preparing debates on this subject as part of the science program.” Mrs Lock said they are looking forward to seeing what the future can bring for the school.“We are very excited to be part of the program, we have been waiting a number of years for a partnership, and hope to build a long lasting relationship that will benefit our students.” Topics such as Earth and Space, Living Things, Energy
and Force, Chemistry Matter, Mathematics, Engineering and Technology and Working Scientifically with scientific methodology, experiment design and fieldwork are covered and based on the national education framework. The program was established with the intentions of giving students exposure to a science role model for career inspiration in society, learning more about the roles of science in society whilst exploring science being studied in their community and discovering the ‘real’ science behind their own curriculum. Not only do students benefit, but teachers do as well by having the opportunity about the latest science research
in their area of interest, and to create links with scientists and science organisations for teaching and learning inspiration.Future involvements could see class excursions to science workplaces, as well as collaborating with Mr Cook for professional development. The Scientists in Schools organising team provides all the support to all teachers, who are partnered with a scientist with teaching and learning materials. Mr Cook has worked at the zoo conducting research with animals, including bears and primates and is currently research manager for Pork CRC at the University of Adelaide’s Roseworthy campus.
Bob Day: Scrap minimum wage REMOVING minimum wage entitlements would not boost employment, according to Federal Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion. Mr Champion’s comments come after South Australian Senator, Bob Day, delivered his first speech earlier this month, in which he claimed allowing employers to pay people under minimum wage would improve job prospects. Mr Day said modern apprenticeships were both too expensive and restrictive, put-
ting employers off taking on budding tradies. “We have made employing apprentices such a nightmare that few tradespeople are willing to take them on, yet there are thousands of unemployed young people who would love to learn a trade and get a start in the workforce,” he said. “I know hundreds of tradesmen—carpenters, bricklayers, tilers —who left school at 15 and have gone on to lead very happy and successful lives.” Mr Champion cited the
United States of America as living proof of what happens when the minimum wage is reduced. “If you look at that situation, there is little link between lowering wages and employment,” he said. “Minimum wage there is about $6 an hour but their unemployment rate is higher than ours. Mr Day felt the minimum wage (about $640 a week) was set too high. “We do not permit anyone to work for any amount between nought and $640.
“We praise people who work for no money—working up to 40 hours a week in op shops and nursing homes and for the RSPCA—but we do not allow them to work for more than zero until you reach $640. “There are literally thousands of jobs in rural and regional Australia where young people, in particular, who are living at home rent-free, with no commuting costs and a low cost of living, would be able to get local jobs which suit them,” he said.

Families in Wakefield will be among the hardest hit by Tony Abbott’s double hit on the sick. The combination of Tony Abbott’s new GP tax and his medicines price hike mean sick Australians will pay more. Health Department figures obtained by Labor have revealed the GP Tax and medicine price hikes will cost sick Australians in Wakefield $39,920,825 more over the next four years.
Tony Abbott promised the Australian people ‘no cuts to health’ before the election. He also promised families in Wakefield that he was ‘about getting rid of taxes, not imposing new taxes’. Tony Abbott broke that promise when he cut more than $50 billion from hospitals and hit sick Australians with a $7 GP Tax. Tony Abbott also wants to force sick Australians to pay an extra $1.2 billion for medicines over the next four years. For patients in Wakefield, it will mean paying 15 per cent more for prescription medicines.
The combination of the new GP tax and the medicines price hike will cost every single person in Wakefield an average of $262 annually. A cruel and heartless hit on those in Wakefield that can least afford it; the sick and the vulnerable. The Abbott Government‘s GP Tax will also put more pressure on Australia’s hospital system and lead to much worse health outcomes. The GP Tax and hospital cuts will increase emergency department waiting times and reduce the number of hospital beds across Wakefield. The attack on Medicare is yet another example of the Prime Minister’s twisted budget priorities. Families in Wakefield who are already struggling to make ends meet cannot afford to pay to take their sick child or elderly parent to the doctor, or pay higher prices for essential medicines.
Labor is the only party that can be trusted with Australia’s health system and we will fight any attempt to dismantle universal healthcare in Australia.

Unique experiences shared at Book Club n By Natalie Centenera It’s not just a love of reading that draws the Two Wells Book Club members to gather once a month, it’s a sharing of stories and emotional reactions to those stories that is inviting to each individual. Countless people, of all ages, all over the world, are jumping on the bandwagon and joining a book club. And it seems that our local book club has also gained momentum, growing to a record 10 members since its commencement almost 18 months ago. The original four members of Bronwyn Sharpe, Christobel Crabb, Jenny Dowling and Anne Sawtell, are still in attendance and are delighted to see fresh faces bringing along new conversation and perspective. A book that was handed out the previous month is informally discussed by taking turns, however, friendly interjection and contrary opinions can be gently conversed. Book Club facilitator, Anne Sawtell, is delighted to see the success
of the Book Club in Two Wells and as Library Services Coordinator of the District Council of Mallala, is confident that it is a service that will continue to be offered at the library for years to come. Newest member of the book club, 31-yearold Laura Andrews, recently moved to Mallala, and as a mother of two young children was hoping to “actually make time to get back into reading, as well as meet new people”. The books chosen for the group to read encourages the members to pick up a story or genre that they might not usually expose themselves to. Most books chosen have had a very positive reaction and have come to be a much-loved favourite of the group. Last month’s novel, The Art of Hearing Heartbeats by Jan-Philip Sendker, was another well received read, with many members confessing that they were unable to put it down. The Two Wells Book Club meets at the Two Wells Library on the first Wednesday of every month at 5.30pm.
Members of the Two Wells Book Club, seated front from left, include Anne Sawtwell, Christobel Crabb, Fran Taplin, (back) Jenny Dowling, Sharon Luke, Michael Harris, Bronwyn Sharpe, and Laura Andrews.

Night of laughs ensues at local comedy night Two Wells Melodrama Group will hold its third comedy night on Saturday, November 15, starting at 8pm at Two Wells Community Centre. Melodrama Group members are currently rehearsing two one-Act comedies, Burnt Offering and Housekeeper Wanted, to provide the evening’s entertainment, with an interval between each play. Burnt Offering, directed by Anne Arbon, is about man who wins a lottery after many unsuccessful years of buying tickets. Unfortunately, he passes away before the lottery is drawn and it is his wife who will benefit from his win. Or will she? In Housekeeper Wanted (directed by Kay Boon) the main character is looking for someone to cook and clean his house after his wife has left him, but gets more than he expects and ends up with less than he hoped. Admission is $15 per person, with bar facilities available at the Centre. Bring a basket supper to share during the interval. To book, phone ticket secretary Kay Boon on 8520 2778 (leave a message) or email dramatwo@ adam.com.au The Comedy Night is an “out of season” event for the Melodrama Group, providing members with an opportunity to perform in more traditional plays and extend their stage and directing experience. Meanwhile, the script for next year’s melodrama is in the last stages of being finalised for the Group’s annual show on the last three weekends of May.

Last edition run for Virginia Newsletter Dear Virginia residents and friends, This letter comes to advise you that unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, we are unable to continue to produce the Virginia Harvest Newsletter for the Virginia community. The August edition was the last one produced by the Uniting Chapel Virginia (a ministry of Gawler Uniting Church). We are hoping that another community group can take on the producing of the Virginia Harvest Newsletter as we would like this community newsletter to be able to continue to provide information and business advertising to the community. We apologise for this very sudden decision. It is unfortunate but is out of our control. We hope your support continues to thrive in the town of Virginia. Adelaide Plains Football League Reserves Premiers – Two Wells.
2014 APFL Reserves Premiers: Two Wells 12.8 (80) d Virginia 10.9 (69)
Roosters reign after intense battle TWO Wells held off a rejuvenated Virginia side to win a superb contest in the reserves grand final on Saturday. Running out onto their home deck, the Roosters looked extremely confident, buoyed by the 30-goal flogging of their opponents just two weeks prior. But this was to be a far cry from the walkover in the second semi final, the Rams beginning well to take a five-point margin into the first change. It was a tense battle throughout the afternoon but the first half was the real highlight, both sides flying in at will, putting their bodies on the line. The class of Peter Mylonopoulos was creating headaches for Two Wells, but the Roosters were countering Virginia’s quality through the efforts of Peter Seccafien and Matthew

Les Pearson reports: Sincock, who has stood out all year. Michael Abdilla was emerging as a genuine danger around the ground but his impact on the scoreboard was to be telling in the wash-up for the Roosters. Two Wells took a small lead into the last quarter, the three-point margin reminiscent of the closeness of the contest to that point. It was a frantic final term, as players tired and the warm weather took its toll. The defensive work of Devon Oliver, who set up a number of forward forays for the Rams, was vital, but as soon as the ball made its way into Virginia’s forward line, Two Wells worked hard to turn it back in their favour.
Jason Becker goaled to make the lead 11 points but Justin Stoyanoff booted his third to keep Virginia in the hunt. Like he has all season, Scott Wise emerged as the difference for the Roosters, kicking what proved to be the match-winner in the end. Credit to both sides, it was a highquality display. Abdilla’s three goals proved critical for his side, while Brandon Daly’s consistent effort throughout the day earned him the award for best on ground, although Peter Seccafien couldn’t have been far out of those considerations either. For Virginia, Peter and Con Mylonopoulos were vital but not quite enough, and Stoyanoff’s performance up forward kept his team in it.

Trip of a lifetime for our Scout, Jaike Two Wells teenager, Jaike Green, had the trip of his young life when he visited Fiji in August as part of a 50-strong South Australian Scouts contingent to take part in the Fijian Centennial Jamboree. In what was the 14-year-olds first overseas trip, Jaike was the only representative from the local Two Wells Scout Group to be invited to attend, and was one of 64 Australian Scouters amongst the 2000 people taking part. The nine-day trip was held in celebration of Fiji’s 100 years of Scouting, with participants involved in a variety of traditional scouting activities as well as making connections with the local people of the island nation. The Year 9 Gawler & Districts College student said the trip was the biggest and best thing he’d done in his life so far, and would be something to remember for a long time to come. “I think the best part of the trip would have to be meeting the local people,” Jaike said. “You get told that they are very nice but they’re 10 times nicer than you think.” Hiking, obstacle courses, team building and water activities as well as community service dimensions were part of the Jamboree. “Experiencing the different culture was also good fun,” he said. “When we eat at an Austral-

BINGO! Friday nights come alive at Palms The Palms Residential Park at Virginia is holding Friday night bingo and everyone is invited. Organiser Dot says it is an entertaining and inexpensive night out and is run by residents of the village, located on Waterloo Corner road. “We hold it in a 110-person hall located inside the village but everyone is welcome.” Dot says it is always a fun night with a guarantee of a laugh along the way. “We would like to get a lot more out, it is a fun night.” “We make it fun and there’s a lot of laughs.” The hall has recently received an update with new equipment for easy use. “We’ve just got new equipment such as a television so everyone can see the screen.” Dot hopes that more people can Two Wells Echo, October, 2014
Sarah McArdle reports: attend now that the cooler months are behind us. “It (attendance) drops off a bit in winter, but now that it is warmer we would like to see more out.” Meals on offer, including very reasonably priced Fish and chips for $5, hamburgers for $6 and spring rolls for $3, are on the menu before the bingo begins. There is no entry fee for bingo and books are $4. The current jackpot is sitting at $145. If you would like to join in on the fun, bingo nights are held every first and third Friday of the month with food from 5-6pm and bingo beginning at 7-7.30pm.

Growing Playgroup moves to Primary School hall Two Wells Playgroup will be moving to a bigger location at the beginning of the next school term. The playgroup have been running for almost 11 years at the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre (TWCCC), but due to an influx of kindy kids, they will be relocating to the Two Wells Primary School Hall. Organiser, Carly Heaslip, said the group is disappointed to leave the TWCCC.
“It was a great opportunity for children in the community to become familiar with the centre before starting kindy or childcare,” she said. “Having said that, the school has been so supportive in accommodating our playgroup and providing a great space so that our community can continue to have a successful group.” Carly said the group will now be held in the new junior primary play area in the school hall.
“We are able to share toys and resources with the school as well as access other areas such as the children’s garden, playground, library and computer room,” she sayd. “We will have activities such as messy play with playdoh, painting, gluing, colouring, sand/water play. Lots of great toys, including trains, blocks, dress ups, kitchen play, musical instruments, baby toys, puzzles and much more.”
Two Wells Primary School principal, Lynda Fitzpatrick-Brown, is looking forward to the playgroup being held in her school and said it will benefit everyone. “The school also sees this as another opportunity to make links with families in the community, as well as an opportunity to further enhance existing transition from home, to preschool to school; connections to make transition a smoother process
for all,” she said. Come along to TWPS on each Tuesday of the school term from 9.30am until 11.15am; bring a piece of fruit to share for morning tea. Ages 0-5 are invited and cost is $2.50 per week per family plus an annual membership to Playgroup SA, and new families are always welcome! Any questions, contact Carly Heaslip 0418 803 761 or Facebook.com/ TwoWellsPlaygroup
Cairn marks Middle Beach’s old Brooksfield Racing strip
Historical Walk now a blot on the landscape The Two Wells Historical Walk has so many names engraved in stone that contributed to its establishment in 1992, locals are now referring to it as a “forgotten Greek tragedy.” What was once a booming and attractive part of the Two Wells centre has become a disappointing eyesore for locals and tourists. District Council of Mallala Councillor Steve Jones says it is very disappointing as it is a focal point of the town centre. “It is a bit of a shame really, we should be presenting the town in a better light,” he said. Mr Jones believed this would be an area the council would be looking to improve as it appears a stark contrast to other town centre improvements that are currently in progress. Audrey Hart of Middle Beach was one of the many that first established the historical walk and is calling for some much-needed TLC. Mrs Hart believes it is dangerous for the public, especially herself who uses a walker. “It is terrible that it has gone like that, I have heard that it is not looking very nice at all,” she said. “It isn’t something to be proud of at the moment. I think they’ve decided to get the creek in order first and put this aside until later.” Her husband’s plaque stands before many broken names that she hopes will be fixed one day in the near future. “I think the council will eventually look into it, but now they are concentrating on other things,” she said. I heard they were going to hold the monthly fruit and vegetable markets in there from next year, I do hope they can fix it.” The name plaques were originally $5 to $10 each and the volunteers put their hands up to make them. Mrs Hart was told that her plaque is currently broken, which she believes is very unfortunate.

And old dragster on the Brooksfield strip, the cairn marks the strip (inset) and the new ‘Outlaw’ below.
The original Brooksfield drag racing strip that was located on Middle Beach road will be receiving a minor face lift in the next few weeks. The strip, which was in its prime in the 1960s with local rev heads, will be receiving a stone rock to mark its existence from 1960 to 1965, initiated by self-confessed drag nut, Kym White, from Lewiston. Mr White goes by Kym “(Slightly Dangerous)” White, which is his race name. Mr “Slightly Dangerous” White said his fascination with vintage drag cars goes back to the Brooksfield era. “My brother raced at Brooksfield and so did some of my old mates who went on to become successful drag racers and I thought the site should be marked before history is lost,” he said. “I’m a bit of a nostalgia drag nut, so I contacted the council for permission to place a marker at the site, they were very interested and waived the approval fee.” “Council wanted a stone cairn, so what I came up with was this blue stone rock. I contacted Gerry McDonnell, a local stone mason, and he agreed to engrave it in an old bush style for free.” The passionate drag car lover also owns two drag cars which date back to the Brooksfield era. “I still race one and the other I just recently restored,” Mr White said. The history behind Brooksfield began in 1965 when the Highways Department laid down two parallel strips of experimental bitumen alongside the road, giving South Australia its first two-lane drag strip. “When Adelaide International Raceway Virginia was on the drawing board another Outlaw dragster was built which is the one I now own, and is exactly the same as the early version but a later model with 302 GT Falcon donk and new metal flake paint,” Mr White said. “Outlaw 2 was found as a wreck and rebuilt in 1990, just in time for the 25th anniversary of drag racing. Sadly, about 24 years later, I found it abandoned under a tree, and have now completely rebuilt it at my home in Lewiston. “I did the chassis panel paint and assembly, however Outlaw will never race again as the chassis no longer complies with ANDRA rules.” Mr White also received help from local businesses once the word was out. “Spray Chief Custom Paints supplied the awesome acrylic flake paint. Boss Differentials rebuilt the seized diff and True Brush artist Moondog Raymond P, did the amazing job on the period correct sign writing and many mates helped as well,” he said. Kym’s cars will be on display at the Extreme Auto Expo at Wayville Showgrounds November 28th – 29th.

Sanctuary will protect shorebirds A bird sanctuary second only to the Coorong in size and significance, will be created on Adelaide’s northern coast. The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary stretches 60 kms along our coastline from Barker Inlet to Port Parham and will help protect the summer feeding grounds for the estimated 25,000 shorebirds that make an annual migration. Migratory shorebirds travel the East Asian–Australasian Flyway travelling through 22 countries to reach our shores from as far away as Alaska and Siberia each year. These birds spend their summer here foraging on the tidal flats around our coast feeding on small insects, worms, spiders, gnats and snails; they
also eat biofilm, a thin layer of nutritious slime on the sand. These birds average 22-25,000km in a round trip, they fly the distance to the moon and back in their life time. They need to eat as much as they can when they are here so they can build up their fat reserves necessary to complete the return journey to their arctic breeding grounds in the Northern hemisphere. The photo at right shows one of our resident shorebirds, the Red Capped Plover, who feed and lay their eggs on the beach. The eggs are crushed when people drive vehicles on the beach, or eaten when dogs are off leash. Every time we disturb these birds they are not feeding, and when
they are preparing for a long journey they need all the food they can eat. Please be aware that if you visit our coastlines you need to keep your dog on a leash and don’t drive your vehicle on the beach. The Adelaide Bird Sanctuary encompasses Mallala, Munno Para and Salisbury councils. As a community we can all play an important role in protecting this world famous migratory pathway for future generations. This way our young people will have an opportunity to see these migratory travellers in real life, and not depend on documentaries to show what ecological value our coastlines did play within the life of these world travellers.
Shorebird FactS: n Many years ago scientists were able to tag a Bar-tailed Godwit (Limosa lapponica). NASA tracked this bird’s flight of 11,000km, the Godwit travels non-stop from Alaska to New Zealand and flies for nine days without eating, drinking or stopping to sleep n In preparation for the journey Godwits eat so much, they double their body weight. To do that, their intestines and gizzard, not much needed in flight, literally shrink, making space for more fat. n They burn half their body weight as they fly, and sleep, bird-style, by shutting down one side of the brain at a time It is believed the Maori discovered New Zealand after following them on their southward migration • For more information contact our councils and ask how you can be involved in protecting this environmental asset that is on our door step. Or contact Birdlife project officer, jean.turner@ birdlife.org.au and please help spread the word
$250 for softball club
Two Wells Softball Club has received a generous donation of $250 from Blue Light. The club is grateful for the donation, which the club intends to use wisely. “The money will be well spent on hopefully increasing junior numbers and new equipment for the club,” said club president, Karin Farrugia. • Pictured: Blue Light representatives Panne Porter, Jennifer Nicol, Two Wells Softball Club president, Karin Farrugia, player Chelsi Zolotors and secretary, Sally Green. Two Wells…one teriffic community Last month I attended another citizenship ceremony. Giau Van Huynh took the pledge and joined the citizenry of the best country in the world. Giau was accompanied by his wife and family, and lives in Two Wells. The scones that Janine Harding and Lynette Seccafien organised were delish. I attended an author event at Two Wells Bowling Club on September 10. As a teacher myself, I was most impressed that Tricia Stringer could combine teaching with the time demands of writing books. Bev Molloy and Barb Lee-Archer organised the munchies despite the challenge of renovations decimating the kitchen. Barb was the lucky winner of Tricia’s next novel, which hasn’t been published yet. On the way to the football grand final in Two Wells last month, I stopped at the market day presented by Two Wells Bowling Club and associates. Jode and the team

With a lifelong passion for riding, Two Wells’ Melissa Karutz is…
A star in the saddle Bec O’Brien reports:
Melissa Karutz was born into the saddle it would seem. The 25-year-old Two Wells resident has been riding horses since before she could walk and had her own pony by the age of four. Her mum, Joanne, was an accomplished eventer and her grandfather Barry Ewen trained gallopers and trotters, so Melissa’s love of horses’s is almost a genetic thing. Even her fiancé, Michael Harding, has an equine link – he trains trotters. A student at Angle Vale Primary School before heading to Balaklava High School and then on to Gawler High School to complete Year 11 and 12, Melissa was originally on track to follow a career in childcare but had always dreamed of working with horses full time. Teaching children to ride was something she did on the side and in her free time. But it soon became apparent the battle between working to ride and riding for work was a battle no more, and just over a year ago Melissa took a big risk and decided to give her passion all of her focus. Her future lay with the horses. “My passion is horses; it’s in the blood you could say,” Melissa explained. “I worked to pay for my horses and initially started giving lessons to a few friends. “It’s just grown from there really.” During school holidays, Melissa runs two-day horse camps at her property, Melbrock Park, just outside Two Wells.
N Two Wells rider Melissa Karutz was this year named Champion Rider at Grand National level in the 21-30 year old category. Melissa has been involved with horses since before she could walk and has made her passion her life, offering riding instruction and training at her local property. She is pictured above on Dicavalli Dandy after winning champion rider at the Australian Grand National Championships earlier this year.
Kids bring along their ponies and horses, or Melissa can supply one, camp together and participate in fun, daily riding lessons and games. It is an opportunity for the
budding riders to improve their skills, develop broader relationships with like-minded youngsters and strengthen the bond with their mount. During the week Melissa trains
horses for shows, teaches horsemanship and gives weekly riding lessons for children. Two Wells youngsters, Chelsea Nelson, 11, and Jazmin Phillips, 13, come as often as they can to help out with the horses and even show some of Melissa’s horses for her. “I really like to aim things at the kids,” Melissa said. “I think the kids are going to be the ones coming through. “I’ve done eventing, show jumping, dressage, and even vaulting. “I’ve done a bit of everything but showing is my first love.” This love doesn’t come cheap, with Melissa saying she’s spent tens of thousands of dollars preparing, transporting horses to and from, and competing in show events around the country. It’s a love that has seen her take part in the esteemed Grand National event since she was a young child. Earlier this year Melissa was
crowned Champion Rider at the Australian Grand Nationals in the 21-30 year old category on a horse she borrowed from interstate, which she had never ridden before. “I’ve been going to the Grand National every year since I was seven,” she said. “But this year was the first time I’ve actually won, so that’s pretty special.” A top-ten place-getter over the years, Melissa says this victory is a personal highlight in a long riding career, particularly after suffering a broken leg 12 months ago which needed a rod, bolts and metal plate to put it back together. “My next big thing that I’d love to do is the Garryowen,” she said. “It’s a turnout class at the Melbourne Royal (Show). “I’d be judged on presentation, riding ability, manners and paces of the horse. “It’s a big thing in the horse world.” So, what is it about horses that keeps Melissa going back for more? In a world that’s seemingly sapping at your energy, money, time and patience, it’s the special relationship between horse and rider that has her hooked. For her, every horse is unique. “The partnership you develop with a horse is what gets me. “I like the challenge of having to work with them, they’re beautiful animals.” Melissa credits her success to the support of her family, particularly her mum, Joanne, who has backed her passion from a very young age.
Sport heats up on the Adelaide Plains Winter sports may have just finished, but it’s time to dust off the softball bat, tennis racquet, bowls and cricket bats and shove the football, netball and soccer boots to the back of the cupboard.
