Duncan Kennington

UNCAN Kennington has lived in Lewiston since 1986 and was a teacher at Gawler High School. He is competing for his second term as mayor, and asks for the endless backing he has received over his term to continue well into the election. “In the past two years I have had the privilege of serving Mallala as mayor and I now seek your continued support,” he said. “I have given a lifetime commitment to building a positive future for young people. As your Mayor I will provide calm leadership and work with you in making the District Council of Mallala a continuing vibrant and positive community.” Mr Kennington realises the people of our district make it an abundant place to reside. “As mayor I have visited many of our towns and communities meeting the many positive and energetic people whose contribution make our District a great place to live,” he said. Mr Kennington would like to continue to support the community and local environment. “As your mayor I want to recognise and support your contribution and continue to listen and provide strong, consistent and transparent leadership.” “I understand how important it is to balance economic progress as well as preserving and enhancing our beautiful environment for future generations and ours,” he said. As a passionate volunteer, Mr Kennington has memberships with many local and national organisations. “I have memberships with Trees for

Farm walk for horse blocks Bec O’Brien reports:

A recent educational farm walk has given local horse owners ideas to better manage their properties and care for their animals. Held on the property of Two Wells resident, Sam Dragon, on Saturday October 11, the free session was run by Horse SA, with support from the Natural Resources Management Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges board. Horse SA runs a variety of programs in high and low rainfall areas to help horse owners run their properties sustainably. Each session can be adjusted to suit individual properties but generally covers topics including assessing infrastructure (fences, yards & stock watering), pastures, the importance of soil testing, grazing practices, assessing hay quality and indentifying and managing weeds. Sam said the farm walk was a great opportunity for her to gain a better understanding of how to care for and improve her land. “I really wanted to know how I can turn my property around from being a dust bowl in summer to having at least 80 percent ground cover,” she said. “I learnt about how to identify weeds and what to use to poison them, and that Roundup really doesn’t kill all weeds. I was given many ideas about dividing my property to rotate the horses for the maximum benefit, and would really like to start planting small crops for ground coverage and horse grazing.” The farm walks are free, with Horse SA also running Webinars on land management at http://www. horsesa.asn.au/events/event and holding bushfire information nights when requested. Contact Horse SA executive officer, Julie Fiedler on 0402 488 306 or visit the website www.horsesa.asn. au for more information or to organise a farm visit. The Horse SA website also has a range of resources available for horse owners and suggests the following link for bushfire information for horse owners: http://www.horsesa.asn.au/emergency/ bushfire-information.

Taking part in a recent Horse SA field day workshop in Two Wells were, (back) Kaylee and Kathy Baldock, Robyn Warren, Jane Brister, Anneliese Ruckert, Chris Tester, (front) Horse SA land management adviser, Andy Cole, Horse SA executive officer, Julie Fiedler and Sam Dragon.

Walk beach, help discover Plovers

Beach walkers in the Port Wakefield area are asked to join in on the biennial Hooded Plover count along the shoreline between November 7 and 21. The Natural Resources Northern and Yorke (NRNY) will hold workshops at Hardwicke Bay, Port Wakefield and Port Hughes to help volunteers learn how to identify the birds, tracks in the sand, plants and survey tips. It also gives volunteers an opportunity to sign up for the event. The hooded plover, easily distinguished by its black ‘hood’, broad white collar across the back of the neck and black tipped beak, the plover traditionally nests in spring and summer along the beaches of the Yorke Peninsula. The birds breed in November, making it an easy way to gauge numbers as they stay around the same area of the beach.

NRNY community ranger Deborah Furbank says the region provides the perfect nesting place for the bird. “Nesting on a busy beach may seem like a strange thing to do, but when the tiny chicks hatch they need to be close to their food – seaweed at the water’s edge - as they are unable to move far on their tiny legs.” Currently considered ‘vuner-

able to extinction’ in South Australia, the species is already extinct in Queensland and Northern New South Wales. Training workshops will be held at Port Wakefield on October 21 at 10am in the Newsletter Office, 15 Burra Street; at the Hardwicke Bay Progress Association at 10am on October 22; and at the Port Hughes General Store at 2pm on October 23.

Cosi’s ‘backpacking’ cockroach returns home

The giant cockroach that has holidayed in Rundle Mall has returned home to Port Wakefield road. Andrew ‘Cosi’ Costello was behind the social media campaign that stopped the cockroach from being made into scrap metal. The four-metre long beast was initially erected in a paddock south of Dublin in protest at the waste dump and now resides directly across the road from its original location.

Adelaide called The Impacts of the 2014-15 Federal Budget on South Australia. The report talks about how the federal budget unfairly targets the most vulnerable in our community.

Nominate a Citizen of the Year

Nominations for the District Council of Mallala Australia Day Awards are now open. Every Australia Day, the DCM recognises and rewards individuals and organisations that have made a noteworthy contribution during the current year, or given an outstanding service over a number of years, to the local community. Community development officer, Lynette Seccafien, who organises the Citizen of theYearAwards, says it is a great honour for nominees. “Nominees are normally unaware they have been nominated, and most are humbled and grateful for the award,” she said. The awards reward and recognise individuals and organisations that have made contributions. Outstanding contribution and community service areas include education, health, fundraising, charitable and voluntary services, business, sport, arts, the environment, or any other area that contributes to making the District Council of Mallala a strong community and a great place to live and work. Presented at the Australia Day breakfast, the awards are open to all residents of the DCM area, and any contributions made to the community from non-residents are also considered. Award categories are: Citizen of the Year Award, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year; Community Group of the Year. To nominate a person or group, download a nomination form from www.mallala.sa.gov.au. Nominations are open until Friday, November 21.

TWO Wells Primary School student, Jack Harris, was recognised as one of South Australia’s most outstanding students at the 15th annual Children’s Week Minister for Education and Child Development Awards in Adelaide recently. Minister for Education and Child Development, Jennifer Rankine, said each of today’s award- winners had demonstrated excellence in both their chosen academic and extracurricular endeavours. “These awards celebrate those students who show a remarkable level of commitment to their activities both in and out of school, and can serve as an inspiration to others,” Ms Rankine said. “This year’s recipients have made extraordinary contributions to their school communities by going above and beyond in areas including volunteering, mentoring and sport

“What sets these students apart is their endless enthusiasm and passion which accompanies them in their charitable extracurricular pursuits.” “Children’s Week is currently being celebrated by schools around the state which are hosting special events and activities to recognise the important role that children play in our communities,” Ms Rankine said. “We are pleased with the great number of schools which are this year getting involved and running activities focused on the keys issues affecting children including health, education, culture and social needs. “I congratulate this year’s award winners on their achievements. “I hope they not only continue to excel, but also serve as an inspiration to other students.” To find out more about Children’s Week and the awards visit:

Category: Primary School student Jack Harris Aged 13 years Jack is an excellent volunteer with exceptional potential, good leadership skills and a fine sense of self worth. His effective skills, humble nature and ‘wicked ‘ sense of humour, have enabled him to develop excellent rapport with staff and volunteers. He is a quiet achiever, a born leader and an excellent role model for other young people at the Two Wells Primary School. Jack has been a member of the Two Wells Country Fire Service Cadet program for two years, has shown sound leadership skills and proven to be a team player. The Minister’s Award is presented to Jack Harris in recognition of his many achievements whilst volunteering at the school, his leadership skills and contribution to the local CFS.

The report found that the North is going take a big hit from the federal budget: 59.9% of families with children in Lewiston/ Two Wells will be worse off. 56.1% of families with children in Virginia will be worse off. The federal budget made pensioners worse off by changing the indexing scheme and tried to rip concessions away before the State Government stepped in to cover the gap. We have to take a stand to these unfair and unreasonable changes to our community. If you want to find out more, please call my office on 8280 5144 or go the website: federalcutshurt.com.au

Light River Marine Park Following the October 1 introduction of several marine parks across South Australia, many have been included along our local coasts, causing mixed emotions within the community. Located north of Parara Point, to the northern end of Port Gawler Beach, the Upper Gulf St Vincent Marine Park (Marine Park 14) covers 966km2 and incorporates three per cent of South Australia’s waters. The four sanctuary zones within Marine Park 14 are said to feature a major fish nursery and spawning ground according to Marine Parks SA. One zone has encompassed part of the Light River Delta, which is considered one of the most ecologically intact mangrove systems in South Australia, however locals have questioned the placement

of the park. The new zoning is larger than the originally proposed zoning. Chairperson of Mallala Foreshore Advisory Committee, Barbara Reid, of Parham, said the area recommended to be included in the Light River Delta sanctuary zone was excluded. “It is absolutely pristine down there and we are unsure why it was not included in the sanctuary zone,” she said. “Someone would have had to develop it from their office, and clearly had not seen the area or where they have put the sanctuary.” Barbara said it was a popular and quiet spot for fishermen from Parham and across the region 138°22'E

138°23'E

“Recreational activities at Light River Delta are now stifled,” he said. “It is very upsetting that it can go from a popular crabbing beach to no fishing with a closed road that is somehow meant to be a liability. Malcolm said there are telltale signs of a lack of research on the government’s part. “Even on the map of the marine park they’ve changed the name of the road from Light Beach Road to Rifle Range Road,” he said. “As far as I’m aware that hasn’t gone through council.” Just for the future of Light River Delta and all our local beach environments, Malcolm would like to see more responsibility and effort put into our seashores. “Our coastal infrastructure is terrible, and unlike the South East,

138°24'E

Meningie, Kingston SE, there are clean areas that are well looked after,” he said. “The Port Gawler Wharf has been left in the same state after a fire destroyed it 90 years ago.” Cargoes of grain and produce were originally delivered at high tide to the Port Gawler wharf. It was then destroyed by fire in 1920. Malcolm hoped one day the Light Beach Road will open again and provide access to the pristine beach. He used to enjoy a spot of fishing, but due to the sanctuary zone he will now be unable to recreationally fish. “I just do not see why it is a big deal to catch a few mullet off the beach,” Malcolm said. “There is no alternative.”

with many fish species found along the coast. Malcolm Frost, who is also on the Mallala Foreshore Advisory Committee, believed it was a huge disappointment for the area and local fishermen. “The decision has been made without any of the community’s input and a lot of the council members who put this forward don’t live in the area,” he said. “It was a popular fishing spot for people launching their boat off Middle Beach, if they fish in the Delta for a few hours, I do not understand what the problem is.” Marine Parks SA said the parks had been carefully designed to avoid popular recreational fishing areas; and access to jetties, boat ramps and popular beaches would not be affected, however Malcolm begs to differ.

Time to get sea ready As the days get longer and warmer, many boat owners will make the most of the local fishing and water sports. It is a must, however, that boat owners prepare their boats properly for the summer boating season. Owners who have not used their vessel over the winter time are asked to check that everything is in order before launching. The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) Marine Coordinator, Philip Moffatt said that the first priority should be to give your boat the once over to prevent any incidents and ensure it is seaworthy. “Check the electrical system, fuel tank, fuel lines and battery and test that the engine is working

properly, and remember to replace the fuel if you have not used the vessel over the winter months. “Boaters often give more attention to their fishing gear than to their safety equipment that they rely upon should they get into trouble on the water,“ he said. Mr Moffat explains that checking safety equipment is a must before boarding. “Inspect all safety equipment for any signs of deterioration or damage, the expiry dates of flares and the Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) and remember to test your EPIRB and the waterproof torch,” he said. Mr Moffatt also stresses that boaters should undertake a vessel and equipment safety check before commencing every trip and safety

should be each boater’s priority to prevent trouble “Always check for the latest weather report with the Bureau of Meteorology before finalising your plans, check that you have the required safety equipment for the area of operation on board and that you tell someone your trip plans and safe return, and if you have a marine radio, log on and log off with the local VMR group,” he said. The Aunger Family

Standing up for Wakefield’s Carers If the Abbott Government gets its way, more than 2,500 carers in Wakefield will be $80 a week worse off within the next decade. That’s why Labor stood side by side with Wakefield carers and blocked Tony Abbott’s unfair Carer Payment and pension cuts in the Senate. But the battle isn’t over. Betty Aunger from Lewiston shared some of her old photographs: TOP: their binder machine, cuts and binds sheaf hay. Ted Stevens is on the binder, and Bill Aunger on the tractor. MIDDLE: Geoffrey and Lionel on a horse. BOTTOM: Bill Aunger with a truckload of sheaf hay as some farm animals loiter in the corner.

A Lewiston icon

T

he Aunger name has been ever present in the Two Wells/Lewiston region. The naming of Aunger Reserve and Aunger Road stands witness to the history of the family in the local area, both presently and in the past. However, their story is not told in the history books of the area. Various Aunger names appear in the index, yet their experience and involvement in the local region has not been recorded. After meeting with 86 year old Betty Aunger, it is easy to understand why. The Aunger family go about their daily business and don’t dwell on hardships or gloat over success. Betty was born in 1928 and grew up in Gawler Blocks, what is now known as Evanston Gardens. She worked in Gawler at the Myer Clothing factory, currently Steinborner, until she was 26 and married William James Aunger, Bill, in 1954 after meeting him at “the dances” she fondly recalls.

In the

SPOTLIGHT

Natalie Centenera reports: From the day she was married, she moved to the Aunger family homestead in Lewiston and has lived there ever since. Bill’s grandfather lived and worked the land there, as did Bill’s father, Bill himself, and then Bill and Betty’s sons, Geoffrey, Lionel and Reg. 700 acres saw the family work hard throughout the years. Sheep, cows, pigs, chickens and ducks were kept and wheat, barley and oats were cropped. Crops of sheaf hay, which could grow to about 1.5 metres in height, were cut with a reaper and binder machine. After binding, the hay was put into little piles called stooks, where they would dry out and then be placed onto the back

Two Wells Echo, November, 2014

of a truck for delivery which required a lot of hard work. Betty also remembers milking cows by hand, “it was very cold on the hands early in the morning”, and she was very glad when they bought some milking machines. The milk from those cows was picked up every morning and taken into Adelaide, and their cream was taken to the butter factory in Gawler. Shearers were brought in to shear the sheep and some were taken to the abattoir. Betty would rear day old chicks, sell their eggs and also ‘dress’ the chickens ready to sell to the butchers. Tragedy visited the family when Bill passed away in 1976 from cancer. 18 months later Betty suffered more heartache when their eldest son Geoffrey passed away at only 22 years of age due to a heart defect that he was born with. Lionel and Reg then had to help their mother on the farm, with Lionel continuing to help even after he was married with his own family.

Betty is proud of her boys, and speaks warmly of her daughters-in-law and four grandchildren. Not only is there Aunger Road named after the family, but also Betty Road, Lionel Road, James Road and Geoffrey Street as a nod to their personal history in the area. Betty has noticed many changes to the surrounding farm land “there are a lot more houses popping up”, she comments. Despite the sadness she endured earlier on in life, Betty continues with a positive outlook and is enjoying some travelling in her retirement, especially four wheel driving with friends around country South Australia. She enjoys the Corstons mystery day trips and keeps busy with the Senior Citizens and the Country Women’s Association, for which she received her 30 years certificate in 2011. And for now she is happily staying put, there are no plans to leave her Lewiston homestead of 60 years, only if it involves cruising around with friends in a 4WD.

The Abbott Government has introduced fresh legislation into Parliament to slash indexation arrangements for pensions, including the Carer Payment, reducing the real value of income support to carers providing care to a family member or friend. The Abbott Government should be boosting support for carers not casting them adrift. The Australian Council of Social Service confirmed that under Tony Abbott 2,500 Wakefield carers face up to a $4,000 cut to their Carer Payment within ten years. I will continue to represent the people of Wakefield by standing up for Australian carers and fighting this horror Budget. FIRE season has come early this year and NOW is the time to prepare.

Advanced fire ban for Mid North The Mid North’s fire ban season has been bought forward due to the dangerously hot summer predicted, the CFS has warned. A total fire ban will now begin on November 1, rather than 14 days later on November 15. The CFS bought forward the season indicating a below average rainfall and increased fuel loads. District Council of Mallala fire prevention officer, Peter Buttery, said he was not surprised by the move to bring the fire ban forward in the Mid North district. “At a Bushfire Management committee meeting in Clare I suggested bringing it forward due to how dry it is,” he said. Mr Buttery is currently conducting inspections on properties within the area ensuring everyone’s homes are tidy and all potentially flammable material is destroyed before the fire ban begins. “Anyone issued with a Bushfire Reduction Compliance Notice is required to comply with the requirements of the notice within the time frame given.” If owners do not comply with the rules of the expiation notice, Mr Buttery said the council would prevent any potential devastation themselves.

Sarah McArdle reports:

“Council may organise a contractor to perform the work required at the owner’s expense and may take further legal action against them,” he said. Current fines for lighting a fire within a fire ban season stand at $315 for an on-the-spot fine. On a total fire ban day, maximum penalties are $10,000 and two years jail. Three other districts were also altered with the Flinders to October 15, Eastern Eyre Peninsula and West Coast Fire Ban districts beginning on October 20. The Yorke Peninsula fire ban will still begin on November 15. The Fire Danger Season for the remaining 10 districts state wide will be determined in the coming weeks. All residents of the state’s fire ban districts are asked to develop a Bushfire Survival Plan. Ongoing maintenance is a must to keep your property fire safe. For a constant updates on fire risks, the CFS has a mobile phone application, website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au or Bushfire Information Hotline on 1300 362 361 that informs of any risks in your fire ban district.

Premier leads health forum PREMIER Jay Weatherill attended a seniors forum at Virginia on October 17, outlining the State Government’s moves to soften the impact of the Federal Budget cuts on pensioners. The forum was organised by Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, who also secured a visit from former Federal Health Minister and northern suburbs MP Martyn Evans at the event. Ms Vlahos said the turnout of about 80 locals was a good result. “It was a pleasure to see such a strong turnout from the local community to attend the forum,” she said. “I would like to thank everyone who attended; the General Manager of the Palms Residential Park, Martin Banham, and the volunteers who helped with the venue set up.

“A big thankyou also goes to Premier Jay Weatherill and Martyn Evans who were guest speakers at the forum. “I hope the attendees found the forum informative and interactive. “Everyone had a chance to chat after the formalities. “We spoke about planning ahead for our health care preferences using Advance Care Directives and the effect of the Federal Budget cut in our local communities. “Forum attendees were shocked to hear that some of the areas in our state that are most adversely affected by the Federal Budget are Lewiston, Virginia, Salisbury North and Paralowie. “I will be conducting more forums in the new year in other areas of the electorate.”

Ready to nest, keep an eye out for our feathered friends of the Plains

n The lorikeet is the only parrot in the world with a unique tongue that has lots of little barbs on it. This tongue is perfectly adapted to mop up pollen and nectar from native flowers, just like a brush. n When Captain Cook first arrived in Botany Bay, his Polynesian navigator, Tupaia, befriended a young Rainbow Lorikeet and kept it as a pet. Sadly the lorikeet outlived Tupaia who died on the journey back to England. Tupaia’s pet would go on to become the first Australian parrot to have its portrait painted by a botanist (Peter Brown). n Rainbow Lorikeets are almost exclusively arboreal which means they spend all their time in trees. So you won’t find this buddy on the ground (unless locked in combat with another bird). Rainbow Lorikeets are very easy to recognise because of their amazing technicolour coat. Their bright, multi-coloured feathers make them a very special, one-of-a-kind Australian bird.

Special report: Sarah McArdle WE can all breathe a sigh of relief this month as this noisy neighbour finally turns down the decibels this spring. The Rainbow Lorikeet can be a frustrating backyard visitor at times; due to their loud screeching and noise they create when they get together in their roosting trees. However, the good news is that many of these flocks are currently dispersing as they spread out to look for nests. “Right now the Plains lorikeets are looking for some good nesting spots to raise their chicks,” said Ms Susanna Bradshaw, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “They will be starting to nest in tree hollows or nest boxes and both parents will take care of the chick. “These lorikeets are noisy communicators because they usually hang out in large groups, so they have a lot of other voices to compete with. “It’s true that Rainbow Lorikeets can be noisy little blighters at times, but humans can be just as troublesome for them if we cut down their nesting or roosting trees or when they become victims on our roads. “Remember to slow down when there are native animals around and leave big, old trees in your garden—unless they are dangerous, of course. “Just a few simple things you do can make such a positive difference for not just Rainbow Lorikeets, but all sorts of native wildlife.

Interesting facts about Rainbow Lorikeets

“The Rainbow Lorikeet is an iconic Aussie bird that can bring so much colour and personality into your garden. They are endlessly entertaining when they clown around and shower each other with affection,” she explained.

It’s switching your banking to us. But it’s bigger than that. It’s In Excess of $1.2 million poured back into Virginia, Two Wells and Mallala Districts.

Tips for making the most of Rainbow Lorikeets

n Even though lorikeets have a very sweet tooth and mainly eat pollen and nectar, their bodies are not adapted to the refined sugar that we eat. So make sure you don’t feed them any honey or sugar as it can make them ill. Feeding them bread can also cause problems, so let them find their own food as they are very good at it! n Lorikeets love splashing Two Wells Echo, November, 2014

around in birdbaths so you could place one in your garden, near a window and watch their crazy antics up close. Plenty of other birds will also thank you for it. Keep an eye out, snakes alive Annabelle our super sensation One of the ‘Smartest Dog’s in Australia’ was on cloud nine after coming runner-up in the event following her entry that was broadcast on Studio 10 in September. Normally a field for the working dogs, Annabelle the Chihuahua is a special dog to owner and qualified dog trainer, Liz Gray. Annabelle came to Liz as a stray dog four years ago and has since flourished. “She has a flair to learn and I am the lucky one,” she said. “What makes her achievements even more amazing is she is a Chihuahua! She competes against (and beats) working dogs such as Border Collies.” Annabelle has also been ripping up the Dancing with Dogs arena and participates (and wins!) the Dancing with Dogs and ‘Rally O’ obedience,

of which she has won many trophies. “She is also the highest titled dog in Heelwork to Music in SA and is the current novice Rally O champion for SA as well.” Annabelle is one special little dog! The Good Food

IT’S that time of year again when snakes come out of hibernation, hungry and aggressive. As the weather becomes warmer, we’re seeing the snakes make the most of their sunbathing opportunities. Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources manager of animal welfare, Dr Deb Kelly, said snakes typically began coming out of hibernation toward the end of August. “It’s important to keep your yard tidy all year round. Wood heaps, long grass, piles of rubbish and stored building materials such as corrugated iron are all common spots to find snakes, and they also make good cover for mice and rats, which are their favourite prey,” she explained. Dr Kelly warned that small water sources could also attract snakes, warning those to be

vigilant with where pet water is placed. “Bird feeders not only feed visiting birds but also attract rodents, which provide a readymade food source for snakes,” she said. Brown snakes are widespread across South Australia, and are commonly found on the Adelaide Plains, where we can also come across red-bellied black snakes and tiger snakes. “A newly-hatched eastern brown snake has enough venom to hospitalise or even kill an adult, even when they are 15cm long. Dr Kelly said most snake bites happened when people were trying to catch or kill a snake. “For that reason, if a person or a pet is bitten, it’s vital to seek medical attention immediately,” she said.

“These are all native animals, so remember they have their role to play in the ecosystem, including helping to control rodent populations.” Dr Kelly wants to remind everyone to keep their distance and do not panic if you come across one. “Most snakes are not aggressive and they won’t chase you, so just be sensible, keep your distance and call in an expert rather than trying to deal with them yourself,” she said. Snake catcher, David Pick, of Adelaide Plains Snake Catchers, said the solution for preventing snakes this summer is to destroy any food sources such as mice. “Get rid of mice in hay sheds, their holes make an expressway for snakes to their food source, as hay sheds are a virtual fast food outlet for snakes and a five-star hotel,” he said.

School holiday fun for all Last school holidays the circus came to town. Well, not quite, but there were children trying to juggle, do the hula hoop and walk on stilts. It was all part of the Two Wells Public Library’s first school holiday workshop – a new initiative which library customer and library services coordinator, Anne Sawtell, hopes will become a regular fixture. The workshop on October 1 saw around 15 school-aged children thoroughly entertained by Circus Elements’ Scott Griffin, who introduced them to the fun of circus skills. Scott quickly had the eager students trying to learn a range of circus skills with a variety of equipment including juggling with small soft balls, walking and balancing on stilts, moving a hoop around their body and manipulating “flower sticks”. Judging by the squeals of laughter, constant cries of “watch this” and “look what I can do” everyone involved had a ball. “Our first school holiday program was a great success,” Anne remarked. “The aim of these events is to both entertain and inform younger members of our community as well as encourage them to use the resources of the library service. “As from 2015, school holiday programs will be a regular feature of the District Council of Mallala Library Service”. The library is hoping to hold another event near the end of the January school holidays where children will have the opportunity to explore the wonders of Laygo land. Stay tuned.

Taking part in the Two Wells Public Library’s first school holiday workshop, a circus skills program on October 1, were (front) Chloe Sharpe, Sarah Pettina, Charlotte Dawson, Jayden Sackey, Lachlan Plummer, (middle) Jed Carpenter, Cooper Carpenter, Beau Plummer, Parker Dawson, Kaitlyn O’Brien, Cody Plummer, (back) Joey Sackey, April Hembury, Circus Elements’ Scott Griffin, Maddison O’Brien, Chelsea O’Brien and Emma Sharpe.

As summer approaches please be mindful of snakes and lizards within your property. According to statistics, 97 per cent of human snake bite cases are due to people trying to interfere with the snake. So if you happen to see one, don’t try and catch it because you may end up being one of those 97 per cent. Do your family a favour and get a professional. Think of it this way, if you are successful in catching a snake the people around you, especially children, will believe they can catch a snake just like you, but may not be so lucky. Our young people learn from the adults around them. Don’t teach them to catch snakes. Snakes play a vital link within the natural ecology of our region, which means they are here for a reason. That said there are a number of reasons why a snake will be on your property, the main reasons being food or shelter. Limit these resources and the chances of a snake being on your property is greatly reduced. Areas of shelter that come to mind are piles of materials such as old tyres, building materials, wood piles etc, these areas attract a number of animal species that make up the snakes diet including mice and rats both of which can spread diseases. Lizards on the other hand will help keep many of these vermin pests at bay, there are no poisonous lizards in Australia. Puzzle 33 (Hard, difficulty rating 0.65) I am always disappointed to see so

The Taste of Tradition

With Mark Webb Two Wells Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group many lizards on the side of the roads squashed; there are times when this cannot be avoided for safety reasons. Please don’t try and run them over, our region boasts a number of natural wonders – snakes and lizards are some of them. Snakes and lizards are native animals and are protected in Australia. It is illegal to harm or kill a snake or lizard and its environmentally damaging. If you stay away from them, they will stay away from you. Our families are precious – be proactive not reactive when you are walking around your property and feel unsure that snakes maybe around, stamp your feet or even whistle to yourself, snakes will feel these vibrations and move as far from you as they can. If you have a snake problem on your property call a professional! Or visit Snake Catchers Adelaide website for more information. Snake Catchers Adelaide 24/7 Phone: 0413 511 440.

o FILL the grid so every row and every 3 x 3 square contains the digits 1 to 9.

On Sunday October 12, I attended the Long Plains Red Cross Branch concert. The great thing about the drive to Long Plains is that I saw more blue tongue lizards than cars on the road. They seemed pretty determined. I think they have just woken up and looking for love. The Whyte-Yarcowie Vaudeville Troupe entertained us. When attending Long Plains functions I’m always impressed that the number of people at the function is always greater than the number of people in the township. The volunteers, Jenny McArdle, Shiffang Huang, Margaret Jenkin, Chris Young, and Maurice and Gwen Secomb organised a faultless event with afternoon tea. Early in December the Schlodder Shelter at Dublin will be officially opened; more details to follow. Some fortunate donors have been immortalised. Jacqui Barr is to be commended for her patience in working out what design was suitable for some of us and for the brilliant artwork she subsequently produced. Community members are invited to join the Dublin History Group president, Ian Telfer, in the planting of a tree in memory of Driver Walter Bergin on November 9 at the Dublin Institute at 9 Sixth Street, Dublin at 1.30pm. This will be followed by afternoon tea. The avenue of trees is in memory of the soldiers who gave their lives in defence of their country during WW1. Last weekend was busy. First I attended the Pony Rescue Inc. Fund raiser 2014. A garage sale was held at Tash Hogan and Raymond Black’s house in Williams Road. Treena Woods introduced me to Biscuit and Annie, who cooperated whilst we took photos; although they seemed much more interested in eating hay than socialising with the mayor. Michael Stewart, the treasurer, took care of the cash side of things. Kathy Buldock, a Lewiston artist and Lynda Sidler, from Cirocco Downs Equine Services also had stalls there. All in all a fantastic group of people and just for good measure they raised $1,600. Team Duncan attended the quiz night at Parham too. As usual we didn’t win any prizes based on skill but did well in the raffles: Mark Webb won the meat tray, Bette Body won the fruit and vegetable tray and Jill Jones won a fan. Raelene Horgan and Georgie Dobson (president) organised the evening seamlessly, and Raelene Schwerdt MC’d. Just a reminder that Magic Moments is coming up on 21/22 November.

District Council of Mallala News Briefs Bin Audit THE District Council of Mallala will begin a bin audit on October 20. Resident’s recyclables and organics bins will be tagged to indicate auditing. The process will be carried out over four recyclable and organic collections. Contact Council on 85270200 for any queries. Dog registration ENSURE your dog is registered, as the council will be using the services of a contractor who will be doorknocking the area and issuing unregistered dogs, and dogs that have not been re-registered with expiation notices. Any registration fee paid after August 31 incurs a $20 late fee and $70 for a business registration. Remembrance Day Remembrance Day will be held on Tuesday 11th November at 11am sharp. Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, will conduct the Service. After the service, Tony will extend an invitation for those present to return to the sub-branch for refreshments. Creative ways to Care

A NEW program assisting carers of dementia in the region will begin in Two Wells from October 31. The program, Creative Ways to Care, educates and trains carers in order to provide and manage the care and responsibility of someone living with dementia. Carers SA are offering the unpaid carers the opportunity to receive practical and creative strategies over a six-week period, which will be held at the Old Council Chambers (between the Public Library and Information Centre) on Old Port Wakefield Road. The half-day sessions of

Creative Ways to Care were purposely developed by Diversional Therapists specialising in dementia care for assistance to family and friends who volunteer their time to care. The series of workshops are free and present ways to use everyday activities to connect, have fun and share meaningful time with the person with dementia. It focuses on techniques including using music, reminiscing and creative hands on activities. As well as the creative strategies the workshop allows for people to exchange ideas, receive support and inspiration

from other carers. Carers Australia trainer, Sue Newnham, said the reaction has been positive. “The benefits can be very significant for both the carer and person with dementia,” she said. Sue said the sessions answer various side effects of dementia sufferers. “It will address some of the changed behaviours such as wandering, restlessness, repetitive questioning, repeating tasks and lack of motivation.” An estimated 298,000 Australians had dementia in 2011, and 70 per cent lived in the community. Dementia is the single

However, while a later start to preseason was on the cards, it appears the playing group was thinking the other way. “The talk amongst the guys themselves is starting before Christmas, it’s them saying their fitness was better last season (2013),” Seccafien said. “I was one to promote not starting so early, as a player I know I enjoyed Two Wells Echo, November, 2014

Tennis club joins Gawler Association Photos & Report: Bec O’Brien Two Wells and Districts Tennis Club opened its 2014/2015 season on October 18 as a new member of the Gawler Tennis Association. The club is heading in a new direction according to junior coordinator, Marie Tapscott, who says the change will provide its junior players with a greater variety of competition, which is more suited to their age and ability. The club is also offering for the first time the ANZ Hot Shots Community Play program in association with Tennis Australia, with up-and-coming tennis coach, and Two Wells local, Brooke Schuit, taking the lead. “Community Play is all about enjoying tennis with friends and being a good sport with the emphasis on fun, not coaching,” Marie explained. “ANZ Tennis Hot Shots is just for kids, with smaller courts, lighter racquets and low-compression balls that don’t bounce too high, making learning tennis fun and easy for primary school-aged children. “This means that kids are able to start rallying and having fun right from their first lesson.” Keeping with the emphasis on fun, the

club held two fun tennis open days during the school holidays. Around 50 children attended the days on Wednesday October 1 and 8, with Marie saying it was a great opportunity for the club to provide something for school children to do during the holidays and at the same time create a bit of interest in the club. “For many of them it was really an introduction to tennis,” she said. “It was really good, far, far better than the Sunday open day we did the year before (and) it was a chance for them to run around, have a few games and have a bit of fun for a few hours.” Two Wells and Districts Tennis club will be offering the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Community Play Program to all children aged 4-12 years in Term 4 on a Wednesday afternoon for six weeks. Regular team training will also be every Wednesday. For more information about junior tennis coaching, playing tennis or joining the club and committee, contact junior coordinator, Marie Tapscott on 0419 838 929 or email gmtapscott@bigpond. com.

Adelaide Plains Equestrian By APEC committee member Mel Boyce

Wow! What a wonderful turn out we had for the Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club (APEC) Come and Try Camp drafting event on October 19. It was great to see all the pony club members from Clare Pony Club getting involved to earn their campdrafting badge. Most of the riders and horses had not worked with cattle before, but by the end of the session they looked like seasoned camp drafters and all had big smiles on their faces. I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of APEC to thank Kym and Candy Michaelis for their hospitality and expert instructing. A big thank you also to all the helpers on the day and the kids who cooked up a yummy sausage sizzle. As this event was so popular, APEC hopes to host a similar event next year. To keep up to date with all the APEC news and to see what exciting things we’ve got coming up visit our website at freeteams.com/APEC. n PHOTOS: Top left – Kym Michaelis in action leading the recent APEC camp drafting come and try event. Two Wells Golf CLUB October has brought to a close a wonderful golfing season at Two Wells for 2014. This month saw a number of different players hit the top of the leaderboard with some superb results in both the individual and team events. This was evident all season with a wide array of players picking up prizes in the season competitions taking home a nice bounty of prizes at our Presentation Day on 4th October. Another huge applause on the day went out to our Club Champions Chris Girling (A Grade) and Tim Clifton (B Grade) for hitting their straps at just the right time earlier in the year. Congratulations to all of the season trophy winners it was a terrific day to finish off the season. A big thank you must also go out to our hard working committee who has all put in a huge effort to continue the club’s success this season. This has been superbly supported by the club’s very generous members and sponsors without whom the club’s competitions and course would not be the successes they are. Our golfing season has now come to an end, however for all those interested in giving golf a crack at Two Wells we will be back on board firing on all cylinders next April. So put it in your 2015 calendar, get in a little bit of practice over the summer and we would love to see you out there. Two Wells Golf Club also has a website, www.twowellsgolfclub. com.au with a wealth of information about the course, competitions, membership information and everything else you need to know. Come out and play! By Adam Bail, Vice-Captain, TWGC.

Members of the led drill team in action.

Its all been go, go, go, at Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club. The second part of the Lower North Zone Clinics have been completed for both showjumping (with Tad McLean), and dressage (with Heather Lundquist). Despite some extreme weather conditions there was a great turn out for both clinics. In eventing, seven Two Wells riders travelled to Waikerie for their ODE in August, and all seven returned home with ribbons and placings, our riders also put in a good showing at the Gawler River ODE on the September 28. At the Two Wells grounds on September 20 an encourage dressage show was held to support less experienced horses and riders. At the end of the day there was dressage

to music. Two Wells had two drill teams put on a display. The led drill team consisted of seven riders and the senior drill team had 12 riders. It was great to see many riders getting into the spirit for their individual musical rides with some horses and riders in full costume. There are busy times ahead at Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club! Preparations are already underway for the 2015 One Day Event to be held on the Anzac day weekend, which will be the PC eventing State Championships. Congratulations to our riders who competed at the PC AFA state championships at Lobethal on October 4 & 5. The Two Wells teams on the flat placed fourth in the competition but were the

highest scoring team in the turnout phase. Composite teams to represent the Lower North Zone were made of riders selected from their performance at the Zone final. TWE&PC had two riders in the composite games team, the team placed second, and the composite showjumping team, which also finished second, with our Two Wells rider having two clear rounds. In November the encourage championships will be held, which is a competition for riders in the Lower North zone who are not eligible for the bigger zones. This event will be taking place at the Two Wells grounds on November 3. For any further information, or if you’d like to help out please see our website at www.twepc.com.au. Seccafien appointed to lead the Roosters in 2015 GAWLER TWO Wells has appointed former junior coach, Neville “Cheeky” Seccafien, as its A grade football coach for 2015. Seccafien was previously assistant coach to Mark Thomson, who resigned after his fourth season as coach this year. He coached junior teams at Two Wells for seven years while his sons made their way through the lower grades. Given the large local base in the current Two Wells team, Seccafien has coached quite a large percentage of the lads at the club, albeit as juniors.

Les Pearson reports:

“Anyone who is over 25, I probably haven’t coached them before,” he laughed. Having an in-depth knowledge of his squad has its pros and cons though. “The players can’t hide as I know what they can do on a good day,” Seccafien said. “You can have that familiarity issue too, a lot of them have grown up in my house and my boys being friends with them as well. “I’m confident they can show the

maturity to separate the Cheeky from Drew Street and Cheeky the coach.” He said Thomson’s influence on the playing group, after coming from outside the club, was vital and could be built on. “It was the right thing to happen at the time, the lads were all 20, 21, 22 but now they’re men, so that was a critical time for him to come into the role,” Seccafien said. While the two worked closely together, Thomson exiting in an official capacity won’t result in Seccafien keeping him out of the picture altogether. “I’ve got my own coaching
