N-SITE works on the planned residential development at Two Wells is likely to begin in the new year following recent council support. The first stage of the Hickinbotham Group’s Liberty masterplanned estate now has District Council of Mallala’s final tick of approval, paving the way for the Two Wells township expansion to begin next year. Detailed engineering designs are the next step in the planning phase of the new estate, Liberty. This includes designs for civil, traffic, stormwater, lighting and electrical engineering as well as detailed landscaping plans. The Hickinbotham Group expect to break earth in the first half of 2015. Liberty is part of the $1.225 billion Two Wells township expansion, which is claimed will possibly create more than 3000 regional jobs during the next 20 years. Mallala council has granted full development approval to Liberty’s first stage which will comprise 354 residential allotments. This approval follows council’s initial planning consent in August for Liberty’s staged land division. Hickinbotham Group managing director, Michael Hickinbotham, said he welcomed the development approval and was looking forward to beginning work. “We have worked with the Council and the community since 2007 to ensure the Two Wells township expansion is well-planned and delivers local services, jobs and the timely delivery of infrastructure as the community grows,” Mr Hickinbotham said. n Continued Page 13

SPECIAL Christmas Message

No 1

Mallala & Two Wells, Anglican Elizabeth Parishes “Loneliness is one of the most experienced feelings of our time.” I heard this stated at a meeting I attended recently in the State Library of South Australia where Hugh MacKay, the Australian sociologist spoke. MacKay said this in response to a question from the audience. In my work as a priest I would agree with him. He went on to say that nothing really satisfies human beings as meeting other human beings. By this he meant meeting face to face, not Facebook or any other of the ways we can communicate with one another. At this time we are reminded that God acted on this principle when he sent Jesus to be born of the Virgin Mary at that first Christmas. This is God meeting

Father Bart O’Donovan outside St Paul’s Anglican Church in Two Wells with Church Wardens Sue Wilson and Di Meaney. us face to face. The reminder comes when in Christmas carols we sing about Jesus our Emanuel. Emanuel is a word from the Christmas story in the Bible that means God is with us. The one who is our constant friend and companion. It is easy to think of God out there somewhere and of course that is true. Equally true, but not so easy is

to think of God as right alongside us. Yet right alongside each and every one of us God is! God is our one constant and reliable friend who makes sure that we are never alone. God is with us in all our life, even at those times when we feel lonely or alone. God with us does not depend on whether we feel it or not. God’s presence depends solely on

God’s promise to be with each and every one of us at all times and in all places. Sometimes we are tempted to think of ourselves as unworthy of God’s notice or even that there is no God. The truth is none of this is held against us by God. Like a good and constant friend, God is ever at our side and ready for us to call in his love and companionship.

God sent Jesus to consolidate us as secure happy people so that as he is with us so we may pass on that blessing to others. God asks us to be an Emanuel to others who do not know of God. Those who are in need of constant and loving friends in their own lives. This Christmas is an opportunity to strike a blow against loneliness. Start in a simple was by attending one of the Church services that are advertised in our churches where likeminded people can be found. Look for ways of reaching out to others through the many opportunities that come our way through people we meet who are in need or link with charitable organisations that advertise for volunteers. This loneliness can be diminished both in the lives of others and in our own life. The Christmas message in the birth of Jesus as a human baby to a human mother is God’s way of assuring us that we are not alone. Jesus is Emanuel, God with us. It also assures us that human beings are made for each other and we are only truly human and truly fulfilled when we share and care for each other.

Local doc laments proposed GP tax Sarah McArdle reports: THE scrapping of the first GP co-payment and introduction of Plan B by the Federal Government has rural doctors concerned about the impact it will have on patients. The Plan A $7 co-payment was introduced in the Federal Budget, released in May, but the policy was never passed in the senate. Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, announced the policy changes on December 9, which would see the original proposal of the $7 co-payment abolished and instead giving doctors the option to charge general patients a $5 fee. Mr Abbott said it was a new and improved system and they didn’t think it was unreasonable for adults who are not on concession cards to be charged a copayment as it will encourage doctors to spend more time with patients. The Plan B ‘optional co-payment’ will be left to the doctor’s discretion to either charge the patient extra, as well as the Medicare rebate being cut by $5, potentially putting doctors out of pocket. Virginia Medical Centre GP, Dr Sam Nitchingham, said if the new co-payment was approved, those who need healthcare the most would suffer the consequences. “It is very hard for doctors,” he said. Dr Nitchingham believed the Senate should block the co-payment, however if it were to go through he is hesitant to say how it would influence his practice. “I am not sure about charging it just yet. I have to wait and see what other doctors are going to do,” he said. “It shouldn’t go forward. Most doctors will have no choice but to charge the $5 and any more costs will mean GPs will have problems with the quality of service. “It will be a burden for everyone,” he added. Dr Nitchingham said healthcare should be the last place the government should be looking to take important funds from. “I know we have to pay taxes, but taking it from healthcare is the wrong thing to do, people will suffer,” he said. Federal Member for Wakefield, MP Nick Champion called the latest announcement a ‘back door GP tax’. “Families in Wakefield cannot afford a GP tax,” he said. Mr Champion is worried about the broken promise that will push up the cost of living. “Every Australian should get the healthcare they need, not the healthcare they can afford,” he said. The change to a $5 co-payment has been welcomed by the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA), as a step in the right direction for rural healthcare, but areas of concern remain. RDAA president, Professor Dennis Pashen, said RDAA would be considering the details that could antagonize Plan B, saying it would deter rural people from seeing their doctor. “Many rural families are asset-rich yet cashpoor. The ongoing drought is impacting badly on both property owners and rural businesses. Given the current Medicare underspend in rural areas, we should be encouraging people to see their GP more regularly, and making it easier for them to afford to do so, not harder,” he said. Professor Pashen said the freeze on Medicare indexation would place further financial pressure on rural general practices, many of which are already economically fragile. “General practices and rural doctors are an integral

Coast revegetation and prevention program Local coasts will be undergoing a revegetation process from Parham to Port Gawler over the coming weeks. In consultation with the Aboriginal Learning on Country (ALoC) Program, Aboriginal Lands Trust (ALT) the DCM and District Council of Mallala Estuary and Marine Officer Warrick Barnes, a group will be focusing on natural resources including native seed collection for revegetation, mapping of Western Coastal Wattle, and vertebrate pest mapping and control along the coast environment. Established in Renmark in 2008, the ALoC program endeavours to provide Aboriginal participants knowledge and skills required to obtain future employment in the environmental management workforce. On the completion of the program, participants obtain a certificate in Conservation and Land Management and Indigenous Land Management. The team have begun site assessments and planning with on-ground works commencing early December and continuing into the New Year, and will assist the entire Mallala coast

Ranges and seeks to create partnerships with various state and local agencies and numerous Aboriginal community members around the state are still employed on current ALoC programs.

The Department of Environment Water and Natural Resources (DEWNR), Zoos SA, and number of Aboriginal Communities and Corporations have since adopted the ALoC program.

part of the rural healthcare system. Rural GP’s work in a range of settings and if a general practice closes, this will also compromise health care at the local hospital and other health facilities where local doctors provide services,” he explained. The new system will come into effect in July 2015 and the changes will contribute $3 billion to the Medical Research Future Fund.

What Plan B will mean if approved: • Concession cardholders, pensioners, people in aged care, retirement settings, veterans paid through DVA, children under the age of 16, are exempt. It will affect all adults that are not concession holders. • Medicare rebate cut by $5 • Doctors can charge general patients optional $5 fee • No changes to scans or medical tests • Pensioners and children under 16 exempt from cuts • Medicare rebates frozen until July 2018 • Doctors must see patients for minimum of ten minutes

The scrapped Plan A: • $7 Pathology, GP and scan and X-ray fees • Pensioners and children pay fee for first ten visits • Medicare rebate cut by $5 • Doctors must see patients for minimum six minutes

Weed out caltrop invasion With summer just around the corner there is one weed you don’t want on your property, it is Caltrop (Tribulus terrestris) Caltrop germinates after rainfall in late spring and summer as soil temperatures increase. Caltrop is a prostrate (low to the ground) spreading plant and can grow up to 4 meters in diameter. Flowers are small, 8–15mm in diameter and bright yellow with 5 petals, usually lasting only one day. Fruit consists of a woody burr with sharp, rigid spines, which splits into segments when ripe. Each segment has four hard spines; two spines are long and two shorter. This plant can cause painful injuries to humans and animals, it is also toxic to stock causing nitrate poisoning if grazed. The seeds of this plant

can and will contaminate produce such as wool and fodder. Competition is a very effective control method for Caltrop as it is a poor competitor; it only achieves dominance when other vegetation is removed and ground is bare. Caltrop is declared plant under the Natural Resources Management Act 2004. If you have this plant on your property and you need advice on how to eradicate it, or any land management advice visit the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board website www.amlrnrm. sa.gov.au. Or visit their office in Gawler for any land management advice or give the a call on 85 237 7700, its all free except the phone call. If you have seen infestations of this plant on road verges or local

It’s not that hard to be bushfire ready. reserves within our districts please contact our councils noting plant numbers and locations this will help council to locate and eradicate these infestations. Preventing the spread of caltrop is the best control measure for this plant within our regions but it needs all of us to be involved, if we want to eradicate pest plants from our districts. Please if you have seen this plant let our council know.

Keeping your phone charged to stay in touch this season is one way to have a fighting chance against bushfire. For more information visit cfs.sa.gov.au

Debate over youth smoking stats A SPIKE in smoking rates in young people two years after the plain packaging was introduced has been labeled a ‘failing policy’ by a tobacco company. Recently released statistics showed a 32 per cent jump in the number of 12 to 17 year olds smoking nationally. British American Tobacco Australia spokesman Scott McIntyre said the figures highlight the policy as counterproductive.

Sarah McArdle reports: “One of the key objectives of plain packaging outlined by the Australian Government was to reduce the attractiveness and appeal of tobacco products to young people.” “There’s a third more young people between the ages of 12 to 17 across the country who smoke now that weren’t previously following

the introduction of plain packs,” Mr. McIntyre explained. The growth in these national and state based figures bucks a long term trend which has seen a gradual decline in smoking rates for well over a decade.” However, others beg to differ. The Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Health and Media and Policy Advisor of Nick Champion MP, Richard Brooks, said the statistics are misleading and that the plain

packaging has made a difference to teen smoking. “More people are quitting smoking, there has been a sustained increase in the use of the Quitline,” he said. The Authoritative information and statistics to promote better health and wellbeing (AIHW) outlines that the proportion of both males and females aged 14 or older who smoked daily declined between 2010 and 2013.

The change is not statistically significant and should be interpreted with caution due to the high relative standard error. Balaklava High School Principal, Mark Healy, said the smoking on school grounds have certainly reduced over recent years. “This could be due to a broad range of factors, better education and knowledge of the harmful impacts of smoking, media regulations, price and or the plain packaging,” he said.

Scouts’ new scarf worn with pride Bec O’Brien reports: It has taken more than 30 years but the Two Wells Scout Group finally has its own unique scarf. The brainchild of the group’s first group leader, Alan Howell - who originally approached Scouts SA headquarters in 1982 with a design but was knocked back because it was considered too contemporary – the scarf now distinguishes the Two Wells group and makes its members clearly identifiable. The scarf reflects Alan’s original design and features a corn yellow stripe, which represents the district of Barossa Light (now Ridley) the group is in, a blue stripe for the northern area and a tan stripe for Two Wells, as well as a unique badge depicting an image of the two wells for which the town is named. Current Scout leader, Andrew Ashton, 22, who has been involved with the group since he was six years old, and organised the creation of the scarves this year, said he always believed the group should have its own unique scarf to set it apart from other Scout groups. “I love it,” Andrew enthused. “I’ve always wanted a scarf for Two Wells and I’m really over the moon about this.” The first scarf was presented to a delighted Mr Howell at the groups’ end of year Christmas gathering on Tuesday December 9, with all scouts also awarded a new scarf. Also recognised on the same night was newly accredited scout leader Brad Norris, who was officially inducted into the group as a leader after completing a range of theory and practical components to satisfy the requirements for basic scout leader training. Andrew was also acknowledged for his success in recently completing advanced leadership training, with Scout leader Toby Stevens also completing basic training in the past few months. The Two Wells Scout Group is always keen for new members and is currently seeking assistant leaders for joeys and scouts. If you are interested in learning more about these roles or about Scouts in general contact Andrew Ashton on 0427 449 180.

Jack and Blake CFS cadets of the year

Two Wells Country Fire Service cadets, Jack Harris and Blake Fuller, have been named joint winners for the brigade’s 2014 cadet of the year. The teenagers were presented with their awards in early December, with brigade captain, Adam Harris, saying the duo had worked hard all year. Training every fortnight, CFS cadets follow a program very similar to their senior counterparts, training in hose and grass fire procedures, road crash rescue training, search and rescue, first aid and much more. Each fortnight the cadets are awarded points for attending training, being cadet of the day and for specific performance exercises. At the end of the year the points are tallied and the cadet with the highest score is announced as cadet of the year. Adam says the awards have been going for around 15 years and are a great way to recognise the efforts of the brigade’s younger members while at the same time encourage them to keep on training and striving to improve. CFS cadets is for any young person aged 11-16 years old. If you are interested or would like to know more contact Chantel Harris on 0422 627 886.

Fire risk ‘at an all time high’

A LEVEL of fire risk South Australia is currently experiencing is normally seen at the end of summer. The Southern Australia Seasonal Bushfire Outlook has been re-written for the first time in history after data showed that South Australia’s averages are at an all time high. CFS Chief Officer, Greg Nettleton, said the indications are a cause for concern as the above normal fire conditions this summer are normally seen in February.

Mr Nettleton said some areas are already indicating that we are actually months ahead which means fuels are dry and ready to be consumed if ignition occurs. “This dryness means that fires will be very difficult to suppress, not only in forest and scrub areas, but in grassland too.” “As the summer season progresses we can only anticipate that dryness conditions will continue to deteriorate,” he said. District Council of

Two Wells Echo, January, 2015

Mallala Fire Prevention Officer, Peter Buttery, said the risk for the Two Wells area is above average. “I am expecting more total fire bans. As the temperature goes up the risk increases.” Mr Buttery said the current combination of soil dryness due to the lack of rain could be a cause for disaster. “If a fire starts, it will be harder to put out,” he said. “We have to be on higher alert throughout summer.”

Christmas is approaching and with it the hot weather. It is already very dry and due to a fairly wet winter there is plenty of dry grass and vegetation. It is also thunderstorm season and so far in December we have had some fairly spectacular lightening displays. Whilst they are stunning to look at they can mean disaster and start fires. We all need to remain vigilant this fire season, but at the same time take the time to check before you call to report. It is fire ban time, so no one should be burning anything out in the open, whether it be rubbish or bonfires. Check the CFS web site for restrictions on lighting BBQ’s etc on total fire ban days. Although it is only the beginning of the season our Two Wells Brigade has been busy attending various call-outs for November, these include: two road crash rescues, three structure fires, seven rubbish fires (three of which were unauthorised) and two call-outs to assist the Ambulance Service. Our brigade also attended the Nantawarra fire in which a member of the CFS lost his life. We would all like to express our deepest sympathy to his family for their loss. Members of Two Wells CFS recently attended a bush fire prevention meeting held at the local primary school, which was well attended. The local Scout Group visited our CFS station on Monday night and was given a tour of the station and fire trucks. We have recently had some new members join our ranks, but still are in desperate need for daytime crew. If you are at all interested we train Monday nights from 7:30pm so come and see us. Cadets are now training on Wednesday nights from 5:30pm till 7:00pm fortnightly, but have now broken up for the holiday period. Training for cadets will resume on the first week back at school. All enquiries for cadets directed to Chantel on 0422627886. The CFS Station is situated in Wells Rd opposite the Hotel. We would like to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Merry Christmas

I hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a relaxing break over the Christmas and New Year holidays. I will be spending time with family and am aiming to get to the beach a few times. If you do the same or are just out and about in the hot South Australian sun I encourage you to be Sun Smart. In the New Year I look forward to continuing representing the people of Wakefield in Canberra. I will also be working hard in my role as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Health to stand up for Medicare and universal health care for all Australians. I’m expecting 2015 will be a busy year. If there is any way I can be of assistance next year please contact my office. Or please sign up at www.nickchampion.com.au or on Facebook or Twitter to stay updated on how I am representing you.

Ride on the Peace Train

Local snake catcher, David Pick, helps bring calm to Ghanaian district through music Sarah McArdle reports:

N

kiligi-Warau (meaning ‘Chief of Progress’), better known in the Two Wells area as David Pick, has recently returned from a six-week stint in Ghana, in Africa’s north west. Mr Pick, who is also the Adelaide Plains snake catcher, made the 20hour trek via Perth and South Africa to Bole, Ghana, in West Africa. Calling his journey “life changing”, David’s mission for ‘A One World Tribe’ in April was to assist with the opening of a new library and a music studio at the local school. “The studio was only a shell as there were no funds to finish the project. Having a fully functional studio at the school not only would give the students the opportunity to create and learn but also provide an income for ongoing future costs involved with the running of the school,” he said. Mr Pick went on to spend a further three weeks in Techiman, central Ghana, with a Ghanaian reggae musician, and they produced a song together with a hidden message for peace. “Redfyah is a very talented, popuThe Peace, Love and Unity lar singer who over the last 10 years contacted Redfyah regularly, and felt has worked in his screen printing the conflict between Redfyah’s fam- Concert was scheduled for business to make money so that he ily could be fixed after he previously Playing For Change Day and can produce music to create peace, wrote a song called Free Bird, that attracted local radio stations and other artists. love and unity amongst his people,” ended a tribal war. These packages were distributed throughout the hospital to the women and children,” he said. STEVEN GRIFFITHS MP JP Member for Goyder Shadow Minister for Regional Development Shadow Minister for Local Government Shadow Minister for Planning

Working for you in Goyder

A challenging year that was As I pen this final newsletter for 2014, I reflect on a year which has presented many challenges. They range from Labor winning the March state election with a minority vote; extra pressure on household budgets with rising utility bills; the huge hikes in the Emergency Services Levy which have created justified community anger, particularly from our CFS and farmer firefighters; another mouse plague; the approvals for CERES Wind Farm and the Rex Minerals mining development; and the Marine Park Sanctuary Zones which came into

effect on October 1. We are yet to see the full impact of the Marine Park legislation and I keenly felt the loss by one vote (from Minister Brock) for an Amendment Bill I presented in the House of Assembly which would have softened the blow for local fishermen. Regional unemployment peaked in June at 8.5%, the highest in 14 years and, with an everescalating state budget blow out, it has also been the year for highlighting inadequacies in our state health system and hospital service delivery overall, which affects us all. With the council elec-

tions now complete I commend all who bravely stood as candidates, whether successful or not. For democracy to work it demands that people are provided with the opportunity to make choices. Well done to you all. It is pleasing, too, to hear from farmers that 2014 has generally been a good harvest, despite a dry finish. Finally, I congratulate everyone in Goyder who continues to work hard in local organisations, businesses and clubs, sharing a love of our region and striving to make our community a vibrant – and better – place to live.

Steven with Michelle Lensink MLC and fishermen Bart Butson and Simon Rowe on September 18 after the one-vote loss of the Marine Parks Bill. The Bill sought to amend 12 of 84 Sanctuary Zones into Habitat Protection Zones to reduce projected serious economic impacts on regional SA.

Port Wakefield traffic congestion Traffic congestion at Port Wakefield during peak holiday times featured in my maiden speech to Parliament back in 2006. It is incredible that, eight years on, this issue still makes media headlines at long weekends, with the two-hour journey from Yorke Peninsula to Adelaide continuing to take motorists up to six hours. Whilst time appears to have stood still on this problem, it is apparent the levels of driver frustration have not, with many behind the wheel in the bumper-to- bumper crawling traffic on the recent October holiday Monday vowing to never again return to YP. I believe continued inaction will result in economic loss for local business owners and tourism operators. I have contacted the

The above photo was taken at the Remembrance Service at Dublin on November 9 when 22 trees were planted for 22 World War I fallen soldiers from Dublin, Long Plains, Lower Light, Wild Horse Plains and Windsor. Next year is the centenary of the Gallipoli landings and throughout 2014 I have been pleased to support local groups in their planning of activities to mark this significant milestone in our nation’s history. I commend all involved who are ensuring this occasion will be suitably marked.

Minister for Transport (the Hon Stephen Mullighan), the Minister for Road Safety (the Hon Tony Piccolo) and the Minister for Tourism (the Hon Leon Bignell), seeking support for road upgrades to address this issue that has gone on for far too long. Costings for road upgrade options have long been done by this government but no funding has ever been allocated. I have even now resorted to suggesting signage be placed to educate motorists on lesser known alternative routes home to Adelaide which get away from intersection bottlenecks altogether and take in places such as Ninnes and Mallala. We need a commitment of dollars to ensure Yorke Peninsula and Copper Coast remain the major state tourism drawcards they deservedly are.

Happy ho ho Holidays The annual Two Wells Street Parade has seen in another year, with the event again well attended and showcasing a variety of stalls, entertainment options and of course colourful floats! A warm afternoon provided the perfect backdrop for local families, and many friends and visitors, to soak up the carnival atmosphere while strolling the street and taking in the large variety of stalls. The parade itself was full of colour, laughter and fun, with Santa announcing his arriving with the ringing of a bell. As well as the popular marching bands, local singing talent from Music Sessions with Expression, entertained throughout the night. Two Wells Regional Action Team

president, Bev Smith-Trim, said the night was a great family-friendly event and a terrific way to celebrate the end of the year. “It was extremely good,” Bev enthused. “Everybody seemed pretty happy and some people are saying it was the biggest crowd ever, or if not the biggest, then very close to it.” Bev estimates around 3000 people attended the street parade event, with special guest, Andrew Reimer, from 5AA, a popular draw card for many. “Andrew is so excited he has asked to come back again next year,” she said. Andrew was given the honour of judging all categories of the handicraft and colouring in competitions, as

well as the many floats of the parade. A first for the event this year was the inclusion of a petting zoo, which was a hit with big and little kids alike. Getting into the spirit of the night were also a number of businesses along the street who decorated their premises in a variety of Christmas themes. The trophy for best-decorated business went for the third year running to the Commercial Hotel. Families Learning and Growing (FLAG) won the best parade entry, in the community category, for their Santa’s Workshop float. The Two Wells Pet and Fodder float won the best business entrant in the parade. Merry Christmas everyone! Stay safe, catch you in 2015.

2014 Grand finale celebrated at Children’s Centre Children and their families gathered at the Two Wells Community Children’s Centre for its end of year concert on Friday November 28. The site was a wash of colour and activity as those in attendance got their face painted, danced at the disco, jumped on the jumping castle or just enjoyed the lovely facilities and outdoor activities. The silent auc-

tion was a big attraction and the cake stall was also popular, with the night being capped off by a variety of songs, which the centre’s children sang with great enthusiasm. Site director, Sarah Wormald, said she was thrilled with the attendance and atmosphere on the night and would like to thank all of the many businesses and individuals for their support and donations.

where eight classrooms were destroyed.
Students from room 14 at VPS were shocked that the students and teachers from those eight classes in Victor Harbor lost everything. As a gesture of kindness to show Victor Harbor Primary School that students from VPS are thinking of them, the students from Room 14 Mrs Lewis’ class held a money line to collect donations to send.
As a result the school raised a total of $325! Well done students of Virginia Primary for your generosity. Two Wells Echo, January, 2015

Liberty approval ushers in exciting era...

Works planned for next year

DISTRICT Council of Mallala acting CEO, Peter Sellar, and Hickinbotham design director, Ruth Vagnarelli, peruse plans at the future development site. PICTURE: Lisa Redpath

LAST week’s approval for the Liberty development to begin onsite works marked a significant milestone for the project, after about seven or eight years of talks between the developer and District Council of Mallala. DCM acting CEO, Peter Sellar, acknowledged the years of work done behind the scenes for the development to at last get the green light. “It’s great news from council’s perspective, to give it the go ahead,” he said.

Les Pearson reports: DCM general manager of infrastructure and planning services, Gary Mavrinac, met with senior management from developers, Hickinbothams, last week. “This approval will represent a significant milestone for the development,” he said. Mr Mavrinac said the approval was dependent on technical drawings meeting required service

standards. Those standards basically relate to the provision of appropriate general infrastructure, such as roads, footpaths, open spaces, gardens and drainage provisions. “Just to make sure the infrastructure we will eventually inherit is manageable for council,” Mr Mavrinac explained. He said the estate would be managed by Hickinbothams for a fixed period of time before handing over its maintenance to council. Site preparations for 300 resi-

dential allotments, roads and a wastewater treatment plant are likely to be the first physical on-site works to begin next year. “In a best case scenario, construction on some dwellings might begin in the mid to latter parts of next year,” Mr Mavrinac said. Mallala council mayor, Duncan Kennington, said he hoped the new development would bring wideranging benefits. “It’s a very exciting time for the district and hopefully it can bring further prosperity with it,” he said.

Residential expansion draws near

• From Page 1 “Council’s comprehensive assessment ensures we’ve ticked the boxes ahead of development.” Mr Hickinbotham said Liberty would be a master-planned estate with quality homes to suit a range of lifestyles. “Liberty will include recreational trails, sporting facilities and the historic township of Two Wells is just a short stroll down the road,” he said. “The proposed Lutheran Birth-toYear 12 school will be a focal point of Liberty and will meet the needs of the growing community and district. “Liberty will also include essential community infrastructure such as a wastewater treatment plant.” Registrations of interest for Liberty are now open. Allotment sizes are expected to range from 375m2 to around 1000m2 to suit low maintenance living to larger family homes. “The estate has been designed with a focus on family living with the majority of allotments being larger and there is plenty of open-space for kids to kick a ball or fly a kite,” Mr Hickinbotham said. “Already, there has been an overwhelming interest in Liberty from the local and wider community.” The township expansion also includes the proposed ‘Eden’ village, which will have larger, rural living lots up to one hectare. Council is currently assessing the application for Eden.

Feedback flows for cemetery proposal THE proposed Islamic Cemetery to be based at Korunye, about five kilometres north of the Two Wells township, has attracted a raft of responses to its development proposal. Following the call for public responses closing on Wednesday last week, District Council of Mallala general manager of infrastructure and planning services, Gary Mavrinac, confirmed the huge response. “Speaking to one of the senior officers here last week, he said it was one of the largest (number of responses) he’s seen,” Mr Mavrinac said. The Plains Producer broke the news of the proposed cemetery in its November 26 edition, following DCM’s public notice calling for submissions responding to the development proposal. As reported, Hamra Design lodged the application with council on behalf of the Imam Ali Mosque And Islamic Centre Of South Australia. The proposal is non-

complying due to being in a primary production zone. The Amam Ali group is purchasing the land subject to council granting planning approval for the cemetery. Hamra Design manager Aref El Hamra explained the cemetery would only serve the one group, as the various Islamic groups in South Australia each typically have their own mosques and cemeteries. “About 20 bodies will be buried in this place per year, and that may increase over five years to 22 or 23,” Mr Hamra said. “In the next 100 years the cemetery won’t occupy 11 per cent of the land, so farming will continue to exist, and the cemetery will be all fenced. “With this project there is nothing to be concerned about because it’s a very small area of land and won’t be affecting anyone.” The cemetery will be specifically for use by the Imam Ali Mosque And Islamic Centre SA, and will feature a storeroom,

office, shade area and car park. The proposal also includes a Ghasol Khana, where the deceased will be washed, and a shrouding area, where the bodies will be wrapped in white cotton cloth before being buried. The responses to the proposal were collated and have been sent to the applicant to respond to the concerns raised. Mr Mavrinac said council was also seeking feedback from government agencies on the application. Once the applicant has responded to the concerns raised, a report is compiled and sent to council’s Development Assessment Panel for consideration. The proposed site of the cemetery is near the northern end of the Hickinbotham residential development. While Hickinbothams would not comment on the matter, Mr Mavirnac believed the company had lodged a submission in a response to the application. Following the DAP report, the full report will be present in the ensuing council agenda.

Commendation recipients Mark Western (University of South Australia), Carol Muzyk (DC Mallala) and Melissa Bailey (URS Australia) with Mayor Duncan Kennington.

Councils win planning awards The District Council of Mallala were in the spotlight this month with two completed projects winning awards at the Planning Institute Australia (PIA) ceremony in Adelaide. The awards, held at the Crowne Plaza, recognise and promote good planning practices and achievements in South Australia. The Coastal Settlement Adaptation Study received the Resilient Australia Awards and was State Highly Commended and also received a Commendation in the 2014 Planning Institute of Australia (PIA) Awards for Plan-

ning Excellence. DCM Project Coordinator Carol Muzyk and General Manager Gary Mavrinac received the awards along with project consultants from the University of South Australia and URS Australia. “It is fantastic that the project has received award recognition,” Ms Muzyk said. “This project is a first of its kind in South Australia and the awards recognise the efforts of all who were involved in the project, including the coastal residents who played a significant role.” Adding to the excitement, the

Virginia and Northern Adelaide Plains Horticulture Study won the Best Planning Ideas – Large category at the PIA awards. Representatives from the City of Playford, the NRM Board, and consultants from Jensen Planning and Design joined DC Mallala at the ceremony to receive the award. The recently completed Barossa, Light and Lower Northern Region Public Health and Wellbeing Plan commissioned by Mallala, Light, Barossa and Gawler councils were among a number of other projects nominated for a PIA Award.

Due to Christmas and New Years day and the subsequent Public holidays, Waste and Recyclables collections will occur one day earlier for residents in the Two Wells and Lewiston areas that regularly present bins for collection on a Thursday. Bins will not be collected Thursday December 25 or Thursday January 1, 2015, and affected residents will be required to have bins out on Tuesday evenings for collection on Wednesday December 24 (General Waste) and Wednesday December 31 (Recyclables). Collections will return to normal week beginning January 5, 2015. Celebrate New Years at Parham o On Friday I attended the Two Wells Christmas Parade. As usual the most important part of the parade was the hundreds of friendly people. The Animal Petting Zoo was a favourite with the children; with of course the numerous food stalls. Two bands, the Tea Tree Gully Redbacks and the City of Elizabeth Pipe Band provided entertainment. The special guest, apart from the hundreds of friendly people, was Andrew Reimer. Jode’s Music Sessions students put on another show at this year’s Street Parade. Performers included the following soloists: Sharni Carter, Amy Barwick, Jorja Schutt, Charli Calvett, Azareea Lomman, Laura Oakley, Daniella Mills, Courtney Fuller and April Schupelius.

MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor and Lewiston ward Councillor

Duncan Kennington

Of course, being warm weather it was thirsty weather. I refreshed myself at the two watering holes at either end of the street and the local RSL in the middle. o The RSL is a community club that serves meals from 6 p.m. on Fridays. Volunteers, who do the cooking, give their time to help raise funds to be used for projects in the community. o Plus, don’t forget the Port Parham Sports + social club Gala Day on Wednesday 1st January. The fun commences at 11am. There is an Open Rolling Pin Toss

and Wool Pack Race; also Gnome throwing and a beauty pageant. There are races for all ages and the 100m open. I did expect to start as the favourite for the 100m sprint but unfortunately I have an injured calf. However this should open up the race for all-comers.

A committee of staff, parents and community members are working together to plan and prepare a series of events beginning with a Cabaret Night in March and Family Fun Day in October. School events like Grandparents Day, Sports Day etc. will take on the 150th theme. As well, a group of community volunteers are working on an event to be held during South Australia’s History Festival 1-31 May 2015.

More details will be advertised early next year. As part of the 150th Celebrations we are also planning a display of photographs depicting the first school to its current location. If anyone has photographs to add to the display please contact the school. Two Wells Primary School - Final Awards Assembly 2014 Friday 12th December the school celebrated its final day for the school year with an awards assembly. Mrs. Woodland, Acting School

Counsellor, presented The Minister for Education and Child Development Volunteering Award for Outstanding Service. This award recognizes those in our school who make a significant contribution to enhancing and uplifting the lives of others by volunteering. Students star on Christmas concert stage

TWO Wells Primary School held its annual Christmas Concert on Tuesday, December 2. It was a lovely summer evening that saw the Primary School Community celebrate the end of another year. The audience was treated to a performance that saw the stage glitter with all things red, white and green.

There was a variety of group, individual and class performances to kick of festive season and the audience saw some singing to Shake it Off, Pump it, a Christmas Medley and Debbie Doo Jingle Bells, as well as I can make my tummy go, Timmy Trumpet, live louder and performance of The Gingerbread Girl play.

Award - presented by Principal Lynda Fitzpatrick-Brown. Before the Rotary Club of Two Wells ceased, funds were provided to the school that will see this award remain for many years to come. We are very appreciative of the Rotary generosity. Congratulations to Siobhan Wellings and Max Royals, winners of the Year 5 Rotary Literacy Award. Both students received a certificate as well as a $50 voucher. Leesa Vlahos attended the assembly despite Two Wells no longer being in her electorate to continue

The Two Wells Tennis Club has drawn an ace this season after joining the Gawler Tennis Association. Affiliation with Tennis SA has enabled the club to provide the ANZ Hot Shots Community Play program to local children aged 4-12 years with huge success. The club has run 5 groups with 30 children participating every Wednesday night from 4pm to 7.45pm. Local qualified tennis coach, Brooke Schuit, has kept the children laughing with fun games while gaining simple tennis skills. Use of lighter racquets and different low compression balls that don’t bounce too high means learning to play tennis is more achievable no matter what age they are. Two Wells has run the ANZ Hot Shots coaching for Term 4 this year and hopes to run it again in term 1 in 2015 due to popular demand. The junior players all received a free ANZ Hot Shots T-shirt and a participation certificate at the end of term. Anyone interested in joining in the fun of learning to play tennis, can contact Marie Tapscott on 0419 838 929.

Our karate kids

Local karate students, Brodie Marshall, Connor Murray, Ethan Phiondya, Tayla Warren and Airlie Tapscott are members of the J.K.F Goju-Kai SA Karate Club in Virginia, run by instructor Sensei Matt Johnson, who is nationally and internationally recognised for his coaching qualifications and experience. The students recently undertook their last grading for the year, with Brodie and Connor achieving their green belt with a brown stripe, Tayla achieving her 6th kyu belt and Airlie achieving her 7th kyu belt. The presentation and awards night was on Friday December 12, where in the senior group, Brodie received the student of the year award for excellence in training, Connor for spirit in training and Ethan the overall student of the year award. In the intermediate Samu-

rai group, Airlie received a student of the year award for spirit in training and Tayla won the overall student of the year award. Another highlight for all karate students this year was a visit from the Japanese karate masters Fushimi Sensei 8th dan and Endo Sensei 6th dan that were complimentary of ‘the etiquette of our family club’. Classes will commence again in term 1 of 2015 and offers age appropriate classes from age 5 up to adults. All enquiries to Matt Johnson on 0404125845.

Top side sits in fifth spot Report: Phillip Devlin Two Wells Bowling Club president

Welcome to our December news. Seems like only yesterday when the last one hit the wave links with all the goss…and even more has happened since then. Our ladies now have their uniforms and don’t we all look resplendent as a club in the new design and bright colour. Our Saturday teams are acquitting themselves admirably. The top side is currently fifth, Metro 1 bottom but improving as we gain some players back from leave, and metro 4 are top and playing extremely well. Wednesdays two sides are middle of the road and playing well. Thursday ladies are doing the same in fifth place. So whilst it’s only early in the season, we need to continue to work hard to ensure we all at least stay in the same divisions and perhaps even another pennant. The “Come-n-Try” night bowls has been successful this year with between 40-50 bowlers coming to the club to spend some of their hard earned cash, as well as learning to bowl and have some fun. It’s been great to see some young people at the club and hopefully we can get them here when we start again in February. Thanks go out to the bowlers who have joined in, also to Ian Campbell who has been there to assist those who were struggling to understand exactly what they are doing. Great to see the young Halls bowling and we can tell the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree as they are very good (or is it those unmistakable bowls of his?!). Two Wells Echo, January, 2015

Many others are helping behind the scenes with Margaret, Irene, Yolly and Dianne all doing it with a smile. We recently had a quiz night at the club, run by yours truly. The people of Two Wells are definitely competitive and they all let you know when you make a mistake (I’ll always know the number 2 ball in 8 ball is Blue). With all events there can only be one winner, because at the end two teams were tied on 80 points. Two Wells Terrors won in a sudden death playoff against the Scarlett O’Hara’s. Well done to all teams. Congratulations to Darryl Hall for his win against “his Dad” Colin in the handicap singles. I am told it was a high-class game. Speaking of high-class games, congratulations to Paul Candlish and Mark Bain who recently won the championship pairs in an extremely hard fought match, winning on the last end. Thanks to David Fletcher for filling in for Grant on the day. A special mention to Vida Oliver who has received her “Super Veterans” certificate. Please put your names on the board either for tournaments and/or the Christmas breakup on December 13. We are catering for it this year again and at only $5 pp (under 12 free) should be a great night, so bring your family and friends. There are always the usual volunteers around the club and we thank you very much. If you can help in any way please let us know. Good Bowling and Merry Christmas to you and your families – may it bring you much happiness. Please stay safe and we’ll see you in the New Year. • Club email: twbowls@bigpond.com Secretary Irene Giannikos P: 041781002

Junior players shine at Mildura Two Wells Tennis Club player, Airlie Tapscott recently qualified for the Barossa Gawler Interassociation junior team to play in Mildura for the girls 10 years and under. Airlie attended try-outs on Sunday December 7 and excitedly travelled to Mildura on Saturday December 13. It was her first time playing on lawn courts and she enjoyed the whole experience. Airlie played two mixed doubles

twilight matches on Saturday afternoon with Bryan Dickson from Tod Street, then on Sunday a singles match, followed by a girls doubles with Olivia Wuttke from Kapunda, which the girls were ecstatic to win 9-5! Mildura boasts 32 beautifully manicured lawn tennis courts on the banks of the River Murray. The junior players had a great time together making new friends and improving their tennis game. Although Barossa Gawler didn’t

win overall, junior player, Riley Thorne won the sportsman award and everyone went home with a positive experience. In the New Year there will be the last junior inter-association match with the Riverland, held at Gawler in late January or early February. There is also the Gawler Tournament on the March long weekend. For more information please contact juniors@gawlertennis.com. au.

Wildcats take premiership The 2014 Spring finals have come to a close with exciting Two Rivers Basketball Association finals, held at Angle Vale Primary School gym recently. The finals series started on December 1, with the semi finals. The preliminary final for the juniors was a good game between Hawks and Lions, with the Lions winning 33-20 and moving into the grand final, against Lightning Bolt. Lightning Bolt got off to a fast

start against the Lions. As the Lions settled they managed to match their opponents and even outscored them. Unfortunately the early scoring was too big to get over, with Lightning Bolt running out winners 47 to 25. Congratulations to Hayley Young, who was named Junior Hoops4Life player for the season.

After a rough start to the season trying to find players and being forced to submit one men's and women's team and no junior sides, things are getting back on track. The men's side is currently in the top four in grade 4. Having two wins, one draw (due to rain) at the end of November, the men have played some great cricket with two of the losses (one by two runs and the other by single wicket) to the ladder leading Para teachers, playing short in some of these games. Two wells opener, Eamon Fetherstonhaugh is the league's leading

run scorer with 254 runs and with fellow teammates, Joshua Osborne, Steve Lynch, Devon Hardiman, Sam Zanker, Lachlan Goss and Dylan Wise make up the top 21 for the entire grade 4. Three players also are in the top 10 for leading wicket takers, Joshua Osborne (10), Travis wake and Lachlan Goss both with 9. It’s not just the men who are leading the league with stats; Rebecca Pool having taken six wickets, taking two wickets each innings.

Her sister, Jessica Pool and Renae Smoult find themselves in the top 10 too with three wickets each. Jessica is in the top 10 for batting, also making her a handy all-rounder for the club. The women's side sits fifth on the ladder, leading Smithfield by points only with each team on one win. With the second week being played as this is written, they could jump into fourth spot. The TWCC will hold its annual Triple J hottest 100 party on Australia Day, where a Twenty20 will be played during the day – so come out and support the club.

n Rebecca Pool has taken six wickets so far this season.
