Tayla has the world at her feet Louise Michael reports:

HAVING her name in lights on Broadway is the ultimate dream for a young Two Wells lady, Tayla McDougall (below). She is well on her way after accepting a position at a dance school in Sydney, “ED5 International,” which offers Australia’s only two-year full time Diploma in Performing Arts course. The amazing thing is Tayla has only just completed Year 12, finishing with a Merit award for a perfect score in her Year 12 Creative Arts subject at Xavier College in Gawler. As a recipient of a Merit Award, Tayla has been invited to attend a ceremony, with all other students who gained a perfect score, at Government House in Adelaide on February 10, but as she has just moved to Sydney, her mother, Kim, will accept it on her behalf. Tayla has been learning dance at Alana’s Dance Studio at Gawler since she was four years old, and has entered competitions around Adelaide since she was seven. When she was just eight years old, Tayla auditioned for the Australia Ballet performance of “The Nutcracker,” and was one of 12 selected from 150 who auditioned. “In April last year, I spent three weeks with the Australian Youth Performing Arts team in London shows and Disneyland in Paris and Hong Kong, which was great,” Tayla said. For her Year 12 Creative Arts subject, Tayla produced, choreographed and performed in the Xavier College’s production of the musical “Fame,” with excellent reviews.

junior ramS needed

“The bottom line is we need players,” states Mark Thompson, junior football manager of the Virginia Football Club. Declining numbers in the junior sides of the club last year saw Virginia unable to field a full side in all junior grades and relied on surplus players of the opposition, as well as younger Virginia players playing up a grade, to be able to provide a team each week. One contributing factor to dwindling numbers is the location of Virginia, which Mark describes as being geographically handicapped, “by being just that bit too far from the metropolitan area and at the same time not being far enough out for the country”. Disappointment in these numbers is felt by all teams in the Adelaide Plains Football League, and this has driven the Virginia Football Club to address the decline with strength and professionalism. In what Mark describes as a ‘changing of the guard’ in relation to an almost completely new committee being elected at the end of the 2013 season and a mammoth 12 months of heralding in new changes to increase the junior ranks and ensure the ongoing viability of the club, Virginia is ready to compete

Natalie Centenera reports: on a level playing field with all the other clubs in the APFL and provide a great club in which young players can develop their ability and enjoy the game. All coaching staff are currently in the process of obtaining Level 1 qualifications through the SANFL. This is Mark’s second year at Virginia and he is passionate about the club and the game, this attitude combined with experience, sees this four time premiership coach dedicated to providing an environment that facilitates players’ development. Last weekend he attended the AFL National Coaching Conference at Etihad stadium in Melbourne, which is an annual gathering of coaches from Australia and abroad who share ideas and catch up with the latest trends in coaching. As well as a professional coaching push, Virginia actively sought certain people who were deemed best able to help them achieve “optimum result for effort ratio”, targeting people with savvy business experience as well as those who had been around the football scene for a long time.

Locals support fire fundraiser Community spirit is alive and well in Two Wells if this month’s “Douse the Flames” fundraising event is anything to go by. To be held at the Commercial Hotel in Two Wells on Sunday February 8, the event is the brainchild of local volunteer Col Smith, and will pay tribute to local CFS and SES volunteers. Col said he was moved to do something to ac-

knowledge the efforts of our emergency service volunteers in light of the recent Sampson Flat bushfire. “Without these guys a lot of people would be in a lot of trouble,” he said. “They do an amazing job.” Col said the support from local retailers and businesses in donating goods had been tremendous and really showed the generous nature of people

Two Wells CFS brigade captain, Adam Harris, said the brigade had been overwhelmed by residents’support over the past few weeks. “We are excited to know that people appreciate what we do and thank everyone for their support,” Adam said. “We’d also like to thank everyone for their generous donations and their thoughts, and for the water and food that was dropped off at the station while the Sampson Flat fire was burning, which is great support.” The “Douse the Flames” event will run from 1-6pm and will feature live music, face painting, a sausage sizzle, raffles and games, with the Two Wells fire truck also on hand. Two Wells Report By: Chantel Harris 1/7/2014 – 20/1/2015 Total incidents: 109 We hope everyone had a good Christmas and a happy new year. Our crews were kept busy over the festive period with Two Wells CFS attending 109 call outs to date since July 2014. Incidents in the last two months consisted of 18 grass/rubbish fires, 5 car accidents, 3 structure fires, 2 assist ambos, 4 car fires, 6 strike team and 3 other. We remind you that you are still NOT allowed to have any fires e.g. rubbish, grass, garden waste etc. Yes, the weather is cooler but we are still in the fire season. Unless you want a visit from the CFS and the Police, we ask you not to BURN. Our crews recently attended the Sampson Flat fire that burnt around 13,000 hectares. Numerous structures, scrub and wildlife were lost. Some of our members attended four shifts lasting longer than 14hrs. As you can guess they were exhausted. Much needed rain arrived to help put out the fires, which was a blessing, but then caused havoc back in our own area with flooding issues requiring sand bagging. We would like to thank those who donated money and goods to our members and the fire victims during the Sampson Flat fire. It was much appreciated. A couple of members were picked to be involved in a T20 cricket match on the Australia Day long weekend at Brahma Lodge. CFS members versus Brahma Lodge cricket club as a fundraiser. We can happily say the CFS members did win the match by 14 runs. Well done boys. The day also raised more than $3000 dollars for the CFS Foundation. The local Two Wells Commercial Hotel will be hosting a fundraiser on February 8 to raise money for the CFS foundation. There will be a band, auctions, barbecue, fire truck for the kids to have a climb in and much more. Bring the family along and have a good time raising money for a good cause. Anyone wishing to join the CFS, either in seniors or cadets, please come down or see us, Wells Rd Two Wells. Cadets: Fortnightly Wednesday nights 5:30pm until 7:00pm (school terms) starting back on February 4, for 13-16 year olds. Seniors: Monday nights (except public holidays) starting from 7:30pm for 16 years and over. For more information contact either Adam Harris on 0413 237 036 or Chantel Harris on 0422 627 886. Until next month stay safe.

Answering the call Sampson Flat fire first hand account

T

he Sampson Flat bushfire last month was a catastrophic way to kick off the 2015 year. CFS volunteers were called in from every brigade possible, with many local firies joining the fight to save lives and property. Here, Two Wells resident and CFS member Chantel Harris, gives an eye-opening first person account of the fire, where she highlights the pain of leaving her own family to aid others and tells of the ferociousness of the blaze and the hours of exhaustion the volunteers worked through.

The hardest thing going to a fire is leaving our two kids at home, sometimes watching them cry as we run out the door. My husband, Adam, and I are both members of the Two Wells CFS. The Sampson Flat fire was a fire I haven’t experienced before. Yes, I’ve been to big fires before but not one this big in the Adelaide Hills and with so much at risk with catastrophic weather conditions. Friday evening January 2 would be our first shift of many at the Sampson Flat fire. The fire started earlier in the day. We monitored the fire since it started and saw the escalation of resources being deployed and thought it must be our turn soon as conditions worsened. We were ready and prepared as always to respond if called. Our turn came and we were sent onto the fire ground just on dusk. It soon went dark apart from the obvious glow from the fire lighting up the night sky. Our job was asset protection, if not, to protect our own lives. We drove up a road, one way in one way out, not wide enough to let two cars pass, let alone two fire trucks. We’d driven up this road and found a shed that was under attack. The residents had either been evacuated or had decided to leave prior to the fire approaching, which

Two Wells Echo, February, 2015

made it feel very eerie. We jumped off the truck with hoses running and managed to save the owners shed. I then went for a walk around this house to check to make sure there were no spot fires around it. It was pitch black and all I could hear was “Hello Cocky” – there in a cage with smoke all around, was a cocky. This is when I felt sorry for the residents who had been evacuated. They must have left so quickly and would have thought ‘what do we take and what do we leave behind?’ This must have been horrible. We turned on every sprinkler we could find around the house and bird cages. At the front of this house and across the road was a huge hill. Fire was raging up it; a red glow was all you could see and the noises of loud cracking fire, trees going up in flames and a whirling gusting sound. It was then time to get out and move to another spot, we had done all we could do for this place. We spent most of the night trying to establish containment lines and hold the fire within these lines. However this proved to be a challenge as the fire continued on its way without any hesitation. The first night shift is always the worst at a fire like this as most of us had been awake all day at work or,

as we were, looking after the kids on school holidays, so it’s a long haul to be awake that long. The next night we spent most of our time mopping up along the edge of the fire ground. Not as intense as the previous night but still plenty of important work to be done. Heading back to the staging area

after the shift for a well-earned breakfast, we came across some small spot fires starting to take off as the sun began to rise and the wind picked up. Our strike team dealt with these small outbreaks. This fire was too big to have crews surround it. It was just one of those fires where there just aren’t enough people and

resources available to be everywhere at all times so these types of outbreaks were a common thing. A call came over the radio they had a 000 call from a resident saying the fire had come out of the forest and was burning out of control in grass and scrub. Even though our shift was over we were close by so we went to help. This fire was burning so quickly through the gullies we couldn’t keep up. We had our strike team spread over both sides of the gully trying to put it out. Air support came into help, which was a blessing from the skies. The crew’s legs had never run so fast up and down gullies before, hoses stretched for miles. The ferocity of this fire was intense, smoke filled the sky. This was one of our longest shifts; 16 hours on the fire ground. Easy to say we were exhausted. The Sampson Flat fire was a real eye-opener for a lot of fire-fighters. Seeing people lose their homes, sheds and animals/wildlife. Thankfully no human lives were lost during the fire. It just shows we all need to be prepared for fire all the time and not just in the hills, we are just as vulnerable here on the Plains. Thank you to all who supported us, our families, friends and the community. Thank you.

Gearing up to celebrate Two Wells Primary School’s 150th year are current TWPS governing council chairperson, Chrissie Scott, former staff member, Rae Wilson, and former principals Dean Anderson and Alan Young.

School celebrates 150 years Two Wells Primary School celebrates an amazing 150 years of schooling this year, with the school’s governing council planning a range of celebratory activities and events. The school hopes to encourage many past and present students, teachers, and volunteers to participate in the planned activities and is keen to honour the history behind the school while at the same time celebrating all those who have helped the school become what it is today. One man excited about the milestone is former TWPS principal Alan Young, who

Writers’ World The Dreamtimes by: Connor Moore

The young man turns in his sleep, his dark skin blending perfectly with the surrounding darkness. His dream disturbs him to his very core; it follows him through the dreamtime, the landscape looking like a disturbing Picasso. The usual bright red ground is replaced with dark crimson in the moonlight; the man is puzzled at why is he in this world? He hears the sound of a creature roar in the distance. He ponders on whether should he run in shame or try to face the creature with only his fist and the land to arm him. As the manslayer nears him he hears a voice that brings him back to reality, “Adoni”. Adoni opens his eyes as the voice finally awakens him from his slumber. He sees a

served as principal from 1977 to 1982. Alan is helping to coordinate the celebrations and will lead one of the events. “We want these events to be a living history,” Alan explains. “In my six years as principal here I made lots of community connections (and) we particularly want to create a project where we capture what school was like in Two Wells from the 1950s onwards.” The organising committee is especially keen for the celebrations to embrace the idea of school as a community, a place that guides, supports and ultimately shapes who

we are. One of the upcoming key events will be held on Sunday May 17 from 11am - 3pm as part of SA History Month. Following the theme of “I remember when .... Your stories are our history” the day will be a chance for students, parents and staff to come together to share their stories. So, mark the date in your diary, watch the school’s website at http://www.twowellsps.sa.edu.au/ and local media for further information, and register your interest by contacting Alison Landherr during school hours on 8520 2277.

elcome to “Writers’ World”, the first instalment of creative writing by members of the newly formed Two Wells Young Writers’ Club. Each month the Echo will support these emerging writers, all aged 8-17, by publishing some of their writing endeavours. It may be a poem, a short story, even a song. This month’s column features a fiction work by fourteen-year-old Two Wells resident, Connor Moore. beautiful face of a woman staring at him with humour in her eyes. Adoni groans as he lifts himself from the hard sundried soil that was his bed for the previous night. He says with a still tired voice. “Nice to see you too Gulara”. He looks up to find his sister thrusting his spear into his hands. Getting the meaning instantly he walks over to his brother Jirra. As he looks over the young sleeping boy he feels a wave of sorrow for what has happened to him over the time that had passed since the event. That moment when they had been teleported to a time when the land had not even felt European feet, a time when magic was still possible. Adoni then begins to walk off to hunt for their meal for the day, After half an hour of walking through the brush land he sees a kangaroo crouching down. He slowly begins to walk towards the animal and then he hears the scream that he heard in his dream, the scream of the creature. The kangaroo begins to hop away from the sound

World day of pray A World Day of Prayer service will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Two Wells, on Friday March 6 at 7.30pm. The service will follow the theme “Do You Know what I Have Done To You”, arranged by the women of The Bahamas. All Welcome. Enquiries to Di Meaney on 8520 2308.

but it is too late, the creature crashes through the underbrush and slams into the kangaroo killing it instantly. Adoni watches the creature look at its meal. The creature is easily over 7 feet. It has an ape-like body but stands upright like a person, Adoni realizes he must kill the creature for the kangaroo. He throws the spear at the manslayer’s head but hits it in the shoulder. The beast’s scream of pain fills the air and blood sweeps from the wound made by the weapon. Enraged, the creature turns and attacks Adoni; its size though makes turning cumbersome. As Adoni moves out of the way and jumps onto the creature’s back removing the spear. Adoni knows he has one last chance to kill the creature. He throws the spear. The tip of the spear buries itself deep into the creature’s chest. The animal crashes to the ground and Adoni retrieves his spear. Exhausted, Adoni flops down and begins to contemplate how to move so much food back home.

ANZAC Centenary 2015 marks a century since Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed at Gallipoli - a major event in building our nation’s culture of perseverance and mateship. Preparations are underway across the nation for ANZAC Day 2015, a day to pause and pay tribute to those who have served our great country and made Australia the place it is today. To help honour this significant milestone in our nation’s history, my office and I have worked alongside the Wakefield Anzac Centenary Committee (WACC) to select projects which commemorate World War I to receive Anzac Centenary Local Grants. Two projects in the local area which received grants were a Mural at Virginia Primary School and the upgrade of the First World War Memorial by the Two Wells RSL Subbranch. On ANZAC Day I encourage everyone to attend their local dawn service and other events throughout the day. Details of local events will be available in my ANZAC newsletter which will be circulated throughout the electorate, and on my website. If you are organising an event for the Centenary feel free to contact my office for assistance in the preparations.

Jessica tops the class

= OBITUARY Rene Launer 1915 – 2014 Rene Launer lived on a farm and enjoyed bike riding. She had her sister sitting on the bar in front and they had the ride of their lives. Once they came down a hill without brakes, full pelt, luckily unhurt but for a flat tyre and a buckled wheel. When Rene was young she won a bike race and received 5 shillings as her prize. Rene and her husband Dick moved to Two Wells from Worlds End near Burra in 1961. She had one daughter and four sons, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Rene was a very active member of the local bowling club from 1968 to 2013. She was singles champion in 1986-87 and again in 87-88. In the association she was part of the triple winners team three times and winner of the association pairs twice. Rene was a very active member of the Red Cross for 45 years and a member of the Two Wells Uniting Church Fellowship for a similar period. She was always very busy. Along with other friends, from 1990 to 2006 Rene made 230 miscellaneous items to support the Blind Welfare Association. Up until recently she had made 600 hand towels in the past 12 years, along with rugs, beanies, bed socks and crochet edgings on face washers. To the age of 98 Rene was still driving her car, cooking her own meals, making jam and running the carpet sweeper over her carpets each week. She liked working on trading tables and if she was on the roster for afternoon tea duties, she would be at the sink washing dishes. Rene always made yummy things for afternoon tea. She loved to have someone call in for a chat and soon had the jug boiling and biscuits on the table. Rene was always busy with her puzzle books and had a very active mind. However, in the last half of 2014 her hands and legs became very weak and she spent a short period of time in a nursing home at Craigmore. At the end of a very busy and active life she just wanted to die. Her wish was granted on November 6, 2014 when she passed away in her 100th year. Rene was a remarkable lady and a friend to many who will be sorely missed. Written by: Mollie Frost with input from Alan Howell and Murray Launer

n From page 1. “I learnt a lot in the process, but also loved teaching other students to dance - some had never had dancing lessons, and some had - it was a great experience,” she said. Tayla has also had singing lessons since she was in Year 7, but hasn’t done much acting as yet. While Tayla was accepted into dance schools in both Sydney and Melbourne, she elected to go to Sydney mainly based on future career opportunities and prior success for former graduates. Graduates from the school now perform in Australian musicals such as Wicked, cruise ships, casinos, Moulin Rouge, international tours and with high profile recording artists. “I want to travel and would love to work on cruise ships and in musicals, and my ultimate dream would be to be on Broadway,” Tayla said. And after successfully managing Year 12, producing a hit musical, and being in demand from two elite dance schools, we are sure to see Tayla’s name up in lights in the future. Jessica Tassone, (left) also of Two Wells, topped off a hectic school year at Trinity College in Gawler with a Merit award for a perfect score in Health. She also won the Kaye Halliday Health award, and was announced 2014 Dux of the school. It wasn’t just school work which kept Jessica busy. “I completed Cert III in fitness last year, and aim to complete Cert IV in the next couple of months, which will make me a qualified personal trainer,” Jessica said. “I’m really happy with my results, and am looking forward to going to uni.” She is heading to Flinders University this year to undertake a double degree in a Bachelor of Teaching and Health Science, combining her interests of teaching, health and nutrition. Jessica hopes to become a PE/health teacher when she completes her studies in four years.

n From page 1. With many clubs in the league having large amounts of reserves sitting on the bench, “Virginia can offer players the prospect of much more playing time than they had in the past or are currently getting,” Mark explained. “We are also able to offer one-on-one individual football sessions for those who might want to do some extra work outside of training times.” In an attempt to attract players that find the cost of recreational sport an issue, there are no membership fees for under 11 players in 2015. There is also a junior player recruitment incentive scheme to encourage players to bring out as many mates as they can. Many exciting developments are taking place at the club, one being the refurbishment of the clubrooms in the next few months, which will see the great club atmosphere of Virginia increase and with the $1.2 billion dollar residential development at Two Wells in the pipeline, the club firmly believes that Virginia is the place to be at! “It has been a non-stop, 12 month, 24-hour, full time commitment for those involved, who are now justifiably proud enough to intone that they have not only red, but also green and white, blood flowing through their collective veins,” Mark declared. With the winds of change blowing in the direction of Virginia Football Club, it would seem that a new era is about to begin, and that breath of fresh air will sustain the success of the club for many years to come. For further information prospective players are encouraged to contact Mark on 0423 116 803 or club president, Julie Platt, on 0418 830 106. Registration days are soon to be announced, with players needing only to bring a pair of sneakers to training as well as a belief in themselves and a strong desire to play footy. Calls for interest to gauge water want

E: Taylor@parliament.sa.gov.au

Les Pearson reports: PROSPECTIVE irrigators are being called on to register their interest in more recycled water being made available in the District Council of Mallala (DCM) area. DCM and SA water are assessing the feasibility of developing a recycled water project to the north of the Gawler River using winter water from Bolivar Treatment Plant. DCM chief executive officer, Peter Sellar, revealed council had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SA Water regarding the potential supply of water to the district in August. The recycled water will be suitable for spray irrigation of agricultural and horticultural crops. Recycled water is widely used in Australia and overseas for the production of pasture, fruit and vegetable crops, industrial and for domestic use. The recycled water quality will be “fit for purpose” for unrestricted agricultural irrigation, with an initial supply of up to eight gigalitres (GL) a year. Over time, it is anticipated that this expansion scheme will be capable of supplying over 20GL per year. DCM and consultants, Arris, are seeking potential customers who are interested in using over 10ML per year of recycled water. Arris has been engaged and will be in the area over the next month to discuss the project and to help potential users complete

Youth Traineeships Available Employment opportunities for up to 200 trainees and university graduates will be progressively advertised on the Jobs4Youth website. These entry level positions are a great way for recently graduated students looking for a way to get started in a public sector career.

The pipe route: The recycled water pipeline route for the Northern Adelaide Irrigation Scheme has not been developed yet, and will be dependent on the location of EOI signatory properties. The map, pictured, highlights the areas most likely to receive recycled water, however, these areas are not confirmed. It will not pass all properties and final design will be inclusive of customer demand (volume of water and spatial distribution) and the least cost model. an Expression of Interest. The Expression of Interest for recycled water is an important component in understanding the different aspects of demand for water. It is important potential customers understand that although they are being asked to sign the Expression of Interest document it is non-binding. The Expression of Interest is not a supply agreement, hence, is not locking the signatory into any unwanted obligations.
However, their details will be retained and they will be contacted as further information is

received. The EOI will not only be useful in gaining information about the demand for water, but it will also be valuable in demonstrating the demand for water to third parties to help secure additional funding and investment. Mr Sellar said it was an important stage of what could possibly be a big economic driver in the district. “It’s all good to get the water here but we need to know the interest is out there,” he said. Currently, the Virginia Pipeline Scheme provides 100GL Class A recycled water with some growers relying solely on

recycled water for production. The scheme has provided an estimated $1 billion worth of benefit to the district. Recycled water refers to water that can be recycled from; • rainwater (rain caught from the roof or other direct methods of rain capture), • stormwater (rainwater that has reached the ground or other hard surfaces on the ground like roads, ovals, paddocks), • greywater (from the bath, shower, basin and maybe the kitchen), and • treated effluent (from a sewage treatment plant).

Marshman move begins as CWMS nears connection THE realignment of Marshman Street in Mallala has begun, although further work on the site will be limited pending a formal road closure. District Council of Mallala chief executive officer, Peter Sellar, said it could take some time before the former Marshman Street was formally closed.

“We’ve currently got that sitting with the relevant road closure groups,” he said. “We can’t really do too much more until that happens.” He said the project has been budgeted to be completed before the end of the financial year. The realignment of the road

will create more space for campers to set up further from the sporting complex. The extra land will also host the town’s CWMS treatment site (pictured above). Mr Sellar said the system was likely to be ready for connection in early to mid 2015.

Lego fun for all Photos & Story: Bec O’Brien

The Two Wells Library held a free Lego workshop on January 20 for children aged three years and up as part of their School Holiday Program. Library Officer, Amanda Kirvan, was able to organize LAYGO, Learn As You Grow, to visit the old Two Wells council chambers and provide the attending children with thousands of Lego pieces to build special designs whilst having loads of fun. The little building next to the library was very busy with creative forces at play as the workshop was fully booked. Faces full of concentration, along with smiles and laughs, could be seen as the children, aged from three to 11 years, designed and built what their imagination could summon. LAYGO host, Liam, was there to advise and direct the children, and their accompanying adult, towards specific pieces. This hands on workshop is not the last that the library will hold this year. The successful day will be followed up with future workshops during the school holiday breaks throughout the year, with an animal wildlife interactive presentation being held at the end of term one. Pop into the library to obtain a program, phone 8520 2100 or email library@mallala.sa.gov.au.

Two Wells Playgroup is buzzing with excitement over the arrival of their new toys and colourful climbing equipment. Late last year the parent-run group was successful in winning a FRRR, Foundation for Rural and Regional Reward, grant to fit out the children, aged from birth to five years old, with numerous brand new items, which will assist in both gross and fine motor development. Playgroup co-ordinator, Carly Heaslip, applied for the grant, and with the help of TWCCC director, Sarah Wormald, and Two Wells Primary School principal, Lynda Fitzpatrick-Brown, was rewarded with $3500 to put towards the fantastic new equipment. The grant has assisted with the re-location of the playgroup’s premises from the Children’s Centre to the Primary School, and addresses the lack of ageappropriate climbing equipment that was previously accessible at the kindy. The new items include a walkboard balancing kit, a hide and climb foam play set, ladybird rocking set, a PVC tunnel and a parachute. The group has also been savvy enough to land funding from the District Council of Mallala Community Partnerships and these funds will directly benefit the children with their pretend play as well as completing the re-location project. Cozy Coupe cars and art smocks are on their way as well as a couch for breastfeeding/feeding and a change table. Playgroup provides a rich learning environment for 0-5 year olds as children interact, have fun and learn through play as well as being a great place for parents and carers to socialise and make new friends. This month, Playgroup SA representative, Mel, will visit the site on Tuesday February 17 to facilitate a session and make rainbow kites with the children, providing a great opportunity to improve upon the already well-run sessions. If you are interested in attending all you need to do is turn up and bring a piece of fruit to share for morning tea, new families are always welcome. Playgroup runs each Tuesday of the school term in the Two Wells Primary School Hall from 9.30am to 11.15am. For more information check out their Facebook page or phone Carly Heaslip on 0418 803 761.

Lively Lynette fills life with contributions to community EVERY now and then you meet a person and wonder where they get their energy from, or what they may have eaten for breakfast. District Council of Mallala’s Citizen of the Year, Lynette Seccafien, is one of those people. Lynette’s in a bit of a unique spot, given she usually co-ordinates the awards in her role as council’s community development officer. So she went from helping hand them out, to receiving one herself. “It is very humbling – in my role I see the nominations each year and because of my interaction with the community, I generally know each person who has been nominated,” Lynette said. “They are all very worthy candidates and I am quite humbled to have been nominated.” The author behind this piece also made a critical error by asking Lynette what her commitments were outside of council. Cue barrage of community involvement: • Foundation member and player of the Two Wells Softball Club and a Life Member of the Gawler & Districts Softball Association • Inaugural member of the Two Wells Calisthenics Club • Foundation member, player and life member of the (defunct) Two Wells Hockey Club. She continues to play for Angaston Moculta United (AMU) in the Barossa Valley. “This includes one year as a committee member and recently helped them to rewrite their constitution.” • President of the Two Wells Tennis Club for two or three seasons • Eight, possibly nine years as a committee member of the Two Wells Football & Netball Sporting Club • President of the Two Wells Kin-

Grants secured total about $430,000 across a number of community groups. Of course, behind the achiever is a support team it would be remiss not to mention. “I would like to thank my par-

Young Lewiston leader sets the bar high Les Pearson reports:

IN grade six, Lewiston’s Tameka Simons decided she wanted to be a psychologist. Now, aged 16, she still harbours that ambition and is working overtime to achieve it, travelling a round trip of four hours a day to attend Urrbrae Agricultural College. “A lot of people see the school as mainly an agricultural studies option but they are very open to students studying different subjects and fields,” Tameka said. She was recently revealed as District Council of Mallala’s Young Citizen of the Year and hopes to work with youth in the future. “I’d like to focus on teenagers with depression and anxiety issues, as I feel it’s my strongest area of passion,” Tameka said. She is a peer leader at the high school, mentoring new students on campus but her leadership qualities extend into her extra-curricular activities. Rain fails to dampen spirit

Australia Day was celebrated around the country on Monday January 26 with many backyard barbecues, trips to the beach and hometown cricket matches. In the District Council of Mallala a delicious breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, and toast, washed down with coffee and juice was enjoyed by a crowd of around 100 people at the Dublin Oval and wonderfully cooked by members of the Dublin Cricket Club. Despite the chilly and drizzly weather three district residents stepped centre stage and were among thousands of people across the country who made the pledge and became Australian citizens. Local individuals and community groups were also recognised for their efforts, commitment and community spirit with the presenta-

tion of the annual DCM Australia Day awards. DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington led official proceedings and highlighted Australia Day as the perfect opportunity to appreciate all that is unique and special about our country. In his opening address, Mr Kennington likened recent natural events to a famous poem. “Today is a day we celebrate being Australian and all that comes with it,” he said. “When Dorothea Mackellar penned the words to her poem which became the national anthem, she clearly articulated the land of sweeping plains, floods and fire, which we have all been touched by

in the preceding weeks. “We have built a nation in which people can bring all that they are to Australia. “We are all free to express and share our cultural heritage within the law, and we can all participate and contribute as Australians.” After many years living in Australia, three local residents, Ken Dowling, Ivy Dowling and Peter Borrelli were then invited to make the pledge to become official Australian citizens. Following the new citizens affirmation pledge, long-time Two Wells resident, Lynette Seccafien was presented as the DCM’s Citizen of the Year for her volunteer contributions to the community and continued support of local events and projects. Half century of pastoring

Father Bart O’Donovan celebrated 50 years in the priesthood with a special service in December last year.

Much loved local priest, Father Bart O’Donovan, celebrated his Sacerdotal Jubilee late last year with a special commemorative service in Two Wells. Many family members, friends and parishioners attended the mass on December 28 at St Paul’s Anglican Church, which recognised Father Bart’s 50 years of being a priest. Father O’Donovan’s ordination as a priest took place in St Paul’s Anglican Pro-cathedral in Hay, NSW in December 1964. At the service Father O’Donovan spoke of his journey from his deaconing in 1963 to his ordination and the first few days of his new ministry and the many years since. There was a photo board on display for people to connect with the occasion, with cake and speeches held in the Hart Memorial Hall following the service. Parishioner Bill Clarke presented Father O’Donovan with a beautifully made and inscribed wooden box. In his response, Father O’Donovan thanked the parishioners, family and friends for their continuing support and assured them of his continued prayer and fellowship in the times ahead.

ABOVE: Local Anglican parishioner, Bill Clarke (left) presented Father Bart O’Donovan with a beautiful wooden box he had made in celebration of Father Bart’s 50 years as a priest.

Neighbours unite in time of need Our state has certainly felt the wrath of nature during the recent bush fires with many people affected across our neighbouring councils. It is times like this that can bring out the best in people. A number of my friends and neighbours made room within their properties for a couple of extra horses which needed refuge from the fire affected areas. Supporting people and having the land available is one of the greatest assets we have within our communities. If we want a healthy ecosystem that can bounce back after any natural disaster we need to protect the biodiversity of our regions. As custodians of our natural environments it is our responsibility to protect the biodiversity that remains within our districts. Our landscapes are constantly under threat from pest plants and pest animals. Now you could say ‘well I have none of these threats on my property’, but if any property within your region has a pest plant or pest animal it will affect you in one way

With Mark Webb Two Wells Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group or another. I have seen a number of foxes (Vulpes vulpes) during the day light hours. If I have seen a fox so have a number people. Foxes are not around because they like the scenery; they are here because they are feeding on someone’s live stock or local native animals, which means that our regional local biodiversity including goannas, possums, lizards and many bird species are slowly declining. It is estimated that foxes cost more than $227 million in terms of loss of production

to the agricultural industry, ongoing cost of control and loss of biodiversity. I believe we as a community have an opportunity to protect what we have left and help eradicate this pest animal from our regions. I have found a website FeralScan. org.au which could be useful. This website focuses on a number of pest animals with the fox being one of them. FeralScan enables users to map feral animal sightings and the damage they cause. Users create a map of all fox sightings within a particular area. Imagine if a majority of us could utilise this website and document where you have seen evidence of foxes. This information could then be collated and used to map fox numbers and possible fox dens. This data could then be used by the appropriate agencies such as the Natural Resource Management Board to co-ordinate and implement fox control programs. Foxes don’t belong in any of our regions; working together we can support sustainable land management programs and eradicate this pest from our regions.

MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor and Lewiston ward Councillor

Duncan Kennington Recently I attended the Port Parham Sports and Social Club Gala Day. The family fun day action started at 11am with entertainment by Heartland. There were races for all ages including the 100m open, the rolling pin toss, the wool sack race, the wool pack race and gnome throwing. I was one of four judges for the beauty pageant. Lola Western, Raelene Schwerdt and others from the club organised a perfect fun day with perfect fun weather. The coolest Australia Day morning in over a decade didn’t discourage us. A happy and patriotic group enjoyed the breakfast and the celebrations at the Dublin Oval. Three people took the final step in becoming an Australian citizen: Ken Dowling, Ivy Dowling and Peter Borelli. I also had the pleasure of presenting the Australia day Awards: Citizen of the Year - Lynette Seccafien Young Citizen of the Year - Tameka Simons Community Event of the Year - Two Wells Ageing in Style Expo Community Group of the Year - Mallala and Districts Lions Club Community Project of the Year - Clubroom Renovations, Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club The other day I could hear this cracking noise coming from outside the house. I bravely ventured out to see what the cause was. Eventually I discovered a couple of cheeky corellas sitting in my pine tree, looking like they owned the place, crunching straight through solid pine-cones. They’ve since become regular visitors to my garden, stopping for breakfast and then supper on the way home.

Grant Daniel, who has been coaching SA juniors for over 20 years will run one of the Wednesday sessions each month, with a different format to keep the kids interested. The winter season is not far off though, and clubs are already gearing up in preparation for registration days with the hope of a successful and fun-filled year ahead. The Two Wells area has traditionally seen most kids descend upon the local football field to play Australian Rules, a popular family sport in the Adelaide Plains. However, few may be aware that there is a soccer club, less than 8 kms away, that draws its players from Two Wells, Mallala, Lewiston, Angle Vale and Virginia. Virginia United Junior Soccer Club is situated within the grounds of Virginia Primary School and is a family friendly venue complete with club rooms and canteen. The club offers a child safe environment catering for both boys and girls aged from 4 to 14 years of age. Currently there are four teams, Under 6’s, Under 8’s, Under 10’s and Under 13’s, and this may increase with the level of interest shown during the registration period. Grant Devlin has been chairman of the club for the past two years and

heads an energetic committee who is devoted to providing an open and friendly atmosphere where players and parents feel welcome to feel part of this sporting community. The State Government has recently introduced a financial initiative to increase junior participation in club sports. “What this means is that families will be offered a $50 rebate to assist in paying their registration fees and hopefully this will address the diminishing numbers of childhood participation in sport,” Grant explained. “The benefits of sport at a young age are numerous, children learn co-ordination, communication and teamwork.” Soccer is a non-contact sport and there is no gender discrimination, both boys and girls play together on the same team. Virginia United Junior Soccer Club’s registration days commence Wednesday February 4 at the grounds. With your registration fees you are given shorts and socks, and for a gold coin donation you may wish to seek some second hand soccer boots. “This year will see the club celebrate its 20th year and activities are planned throughout the year to celebrate this milestone” Grant added. Watch this space. For further information contact Grant Devlin on 0427 181 632.

Bowls club facelift

It might have taken a bit to convince the ladies in the kitchen at the Two Wells Bowls Club that a commercial dishwasher was a good idea, but it sure didn’t take long for the volunteers to throw in their dishcloths and embrace their newest appliance. Acknowledging a Virginia Bendigo Bank community grant of $20,000 last month with a tour of the club’s recently refurbished kitchen area by branch manager Alf Sobczak, the ladies are thrilled with the washer and the overhaul of

the club’s kitchen facilities. Club president, Phil Devlin, said the kitchen had not had any major improvements in the past two decades and the Virginia Bendigo Bank grant had enabled the club to install new stainless steel bench tops and appliances, upgrade the cupboards and purchase a new fridge. “It’s fair to say we have a lot of happy ladies now,” Phil laughed. The money for the

dishwasher came from a $5000 State Government Health and Ageing grant and was the catalyst for the club overhauling the entire kitchen area. Virginia Bendigo Bank branch manager, Alf Sobczak, said more than 50 per cent of the banks income was returned to the community and it was a pleasure to see how the grants positively impacted on clubs, individuals and the community as a whole. “Even though we are based in Virginia we are here for the broader com-

munity,” Mr Sobczak said. “This is what we are about (and) in the last financial year we have given $100,000 in grants plus another $30,000 in sponsorship. “It’s a win-win for everyone.” Two Wells bowler and regular kitchen volunteer, Bev Molloy certainly agrees, quipping “If I had a dollar for every dish I’ve washed over the years I’d be a millionaire”. Now the ladies can spend less time in the kitchen and more time on the green!

Club a hive of activity

Two Wells Bowling Club is tucked away from the main street of Two Wells, behind the playground. Unless you see games in actual play, you could be forgiven for not noticing the lovely grounds and cottage like building. Nonetheless, the Two Wells Bowling Club is a little hive of activity. With men and women teams, as well as ‘Come and Try’ family nights, the club is gaining interest from all ages. Games are played on Saturdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with ‘Come and Try’ night running on Tuesdays, starting up again on 10th February and running through until the end of March. Anybody can turn up Tuesday evenings from 6.30pm onwards, and for $5 you are able to play a game of bowls and be provided with a light meal.

Club secretary, Irene Giannikos, has recently purchased a set of children’s bowls so even the young are enticed to give it a go. Margaret Maylin runs the bar where light refreshments are available for purchase. Social functions also take place; there is an upcoming Quiz night on Saturday February 28 which is a main fundraiser for the club. The grounds are kept immaculate by Greg Giannikos, you’ve probably seen him riding the lawn mower graciously over the greens, as well as Graham Goold who also lends a hand with maintenance. The actual building itself is often host to council functions and available for private hire where wonderful catering can be provided. If you are interested in the sport of lawn bowls or even the social aspect of the club please contact Irene Giannikos on 0417 810 029.

Report: Irene Giannikos Two wells Bowls Club secretary The 2014/15 pennant season has been a challenge for our mixed gender Saturday teams. After winning three Pennants last year the three teams were promoted to higher divisions and have found the competition stronger, as was to be expected. The Major League team and the Metro 1 team need to win half of the remaining matches to maintain their position within their divisions. The Metro 4 team has had more success and has been on top of the ladder for most of the season. The Men’s Wednesday Pennant team in Major League is sitting 7th with the Metro 2 team one place out of the four. The Women’s Thursday pennant team is also knocking on the door of the top four in fifth position. The Come and Try Night bowls recommences on Tuesday February 10, 6.30pm for 7pm start. The sessions run in November and December saw about 40 people come along each week and have a go. These are fun nights, with a little bit of competition thrown in, free food for players and lots of laughs. Whether you are an experienced bowler or a novice, or never played before, you will be most welcome.

Long-time Two Wells ladies bowler, Vida Oliver, accepts her 90-years commemorative certificate from TWBC president, Phil Devlin.

Vida a great bowls club ambassador Report: Bec O’Brien At 90 years of age, when many of her peers are spending their days sitting down, reading or watching TV, Two Wells bowler Vida Oliver is still taking to the green with style. A member of the Two Wells Bowls Club’s since 1967, Vida was presented with a special certificate last month to acknowledge the many years she has been playing the sport of bowls. Over the past 40 plus years Vida has taken on a number of roles at the club, including women’s president in 198283 and women’s secretary for more than two decades. On Two occasions Vida also capably filled the role of women’s president of the Woo-

roora BowlingAssociation and has also been their patron. On the green, Vida has a very impressive record, with six singles championships and was runner-up nine times. Teaming up with the late Lil Gameau they won the Country Carnival Pairs in 1973 and the Wooroora Women’s Champion of Champions in 2000-2001. Vida’s successes in other club tournaments and association events are numerous. She was made a life member of TWBC in 1990 and is currently the club’s vice patron. Club president, Phil Devlin, says Vida has always been a great ambassador for the club and continues to be an integral player in the Thursday Pennant team despite no longer living in the Two Wells township. Congratulations Vida.

Men’s side strong The men's side is going from strength to strength winning the past five games since I last reported. Lachlan Goss destroyed One Tree Hill with bowling figures of 6 for 22 off his 8 overs and even helped to run out the dangerous opener of Fantasia to keep One Tree Hill to 114 for their innings. He then guided the team to victory with Lachlan Franklin with a 48 run 6th wicket stand, defeating them by 5 wickets. After the new years break, Two Wells played Riverside in wet conditions. Dylan Wise top scored with 47 and batted well with Lachlan Franklin to set the side up with score of 8 for 155. Riverside fought hard with three players making 30 runs,

Report: Devon Hardiman Two Wells Cricket Club president but Two Wells captain Travis Wake, with season best bowling figures of 5 for 13, set the standard for the match and Dylan Wise chipping in with 3 wickets, restricted the home side to 125. Two Wells oval was looking thick and lush due to all the rain and resulted in a slow out field. After a slow start to the innings at 3 for 83 off 20 overs Lachlan Franklin (109 not out) and Steve Lynch (44) made a 110-run partnership consisting of many 2s and 3s to force the total to almost a run a ball, finishing with a total of 239 for the loss of 5 wickets.

Enjoying the cricket were, (back) Rachel Williams, Maddison Sayner, Lauren Bywaters, Sammy Steveson, Rachel Lange, Kate Lange (front) Kirralee Rosewarne, Bryce Hart, and Madeleine Seccafien.

Plenty of tough catches went down during the Craigmore innings, however Two Wells still bowled them out for 130 with all but one of the eight bowlers taking a wicket. Peter Seccafien was best of the bowlers with 2 for 11 off 5 overs. After a bad start with Jason Harris injuring his hamstring and fellow opener Eamon Fetherstonhaugh being bowled, Dylan Wise (56) and Lachlan Franklin (33) got the scoreboard ticking again and with a middle order collapse the team was looking shaky at 6 for 118. Peter Seccafien (32) and Dale Dawkins (14) pushed the finishing total to 164. The Lachlans (Goss and Franklin) proved handy with the ball too, each taking three wickets. Steve Lynch also took 2 wickets reducing Para Teachers to 114 giving Two Wells its first victory against them for the season. The women's side hasn’t had the opportunity to play this year, as rain has affected both of their games and as I submit this report, they’ve had. Sadly, they lost the game held on Australia Day against North Pines; there was a mother/daughter partnership with Leanne (25 n/o) and Jessica Pool (24 n/o) making 67 between them. Ashleigh Davenport bowled well with figures of 2 for 7 from 2 overs.

The Australia Day Twenty20 bash was held at the Two Wells oval on Monday January 26 with Ned Seccafien's team narrowly beating his brother Peter's team, with help from English import, Daniel Hooper, who belted a huge 6 to finish the game. A special thanks to Michael Abdilla Snr for donating and cooking lunch, Francis Pellizzari, Greg Spurling and Lance Grant in umpiring the match, which was played in high spirits. Two Wells Football & Netball Sporting Club will be hosting an auction on March 15 at the oval. Any enquiries please call Alison Goss on 0438 785 416.

Tennis stars, Jack and Arlie hit off at Memorial Drive

GAWLER STORE ONLY

Two Wells junior tennis players, Jack and Airlie Tapscott experienced their first time playing at Memorial Drive in the Country Carnival from January 10-14. The siblings represented the Gawler Barossa area – Jack in 14&U boys and Airlie in 10&U girls. The competition was excellent with the chance to play against other juniors from Hills, Mt Gambier, Lower Murray, Pt Augusta and Onkaparinga. The 14&U boys finished fourth out of eight teams with some great wins. The 10&U girls struggled to fill their team each day, so with some borrowed players they had some fun matches with great improvements made to their tennis. n Continued page 17
