Local farmer is having the climb of his life Natalie Centenera reports:
When asked what motivated him to climb Mount Kilimanjaro last year, after already tackling Kokoda and Everest Base Camp, Robert Blott simply replied “just ‘cause it was there”. A simple explanation, from an interesting man, who is turning 70 this year. And to mark this milestone, before hanging up his hiking boots, he will trek the Inca Trail to reach Machu Picchu, one of the great wonders of the world, in Peru, South America. n Read the full story, page 6.

echo 3 Govenor to open students’ commemorative Anzac mosaic
Learning from the past Bec O’Brien report & photos: Virginia Primary School will take centre stage next month when the South Australian Governor visits to unveil a unique Anzac-inspired mosaic wall. Honouring two former students and a local young man who all died in WW1, the special mosaic memorial was constructed in time for Anzac centenary celebrations. Cultural Studies teacher, Caterinia DiToria applied for and won a Federal grant of $5000, as part of the government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program and will be officially unveiled by Governor Hieu Van Le on Thursday April 9. Situated in the schools’ Peace Garden near the front entrance of the school, and surrounded by rosemary bushes, the wall is an everlasting monument to all Australian soldiers who have given their lives in war and in particular, pays tribute to former students John James Sheedy, and brothers Albert and Howard Hatcher. The wall was created under the guidance of Gawler-based artist, Kate Ahlfors, with all students across the school participating in hands-on sessions last year to construct it. VPS History teacher, Sue Graham, said the school was looking forward to the unveiling, saying students were involved in Remembrance and Anzac Day services each year and were very much a part of the whole concept of acknowledging past and current war efforts across the broader History curriculum. “We want the students to understand what it was like to be a young man going to fight in a war,” Ms Graham said. This mosaic is situated in our peace garden. As students reflect on the fact
Six-year-old VPS student Flynn, has a family connection to former VPS student and WW1 soldier, John James Sheedy, who is honoured in the mosaic. Flynn is pictured with Year 7 student Taylah who will speak on behalf of the students at the official unveiling next month. that they live in a peaceful community. We want them to look forward to the future with optimism. As well as the South Australian Governor, invited guests to the unveiling include Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, who will give a brief speech, residents from a local aged-care facility and members of the Royal Australian Regiment.

Your stories, our history at Two Wells Primary “Your stories are our history”, that’s the theme behind one aspect of Two Wells Primary School’s year-long celebrations to mark a wonderful 150-years of schooling. And the TWPS 150-year organising committee wants you to be involved by sharing your memories, your stories and photos, no matter how big or small. Past school students, staff and volunteers are being asked to submit an “I remember when…” story by picking up a proforma from outlets across town. These stories will form a resource

to celebrate, for students to research and a record of why the school is proud of its history. Stories can be submitted in any form including reflections, experiences, photo’s or poems and may include a class incident, a teacher you remember, an innovative idea (school radio station, a new club), a multicultural experience, welfare club event, what school taught me about life, a lesson I have never forgotten, an excursion or sports day, or why Two Wells School is important to me. The list is endless. Why not put something together
with a friend or compile something as a family? Below is a submission from former student Glen Spurling, to give you an idea. “Glen Spurling was groundsman and a bus driver at the school in the 1970’s and 80’s. He drove the Lower Light kids to and from school daily during a time when the Light River frequently flowed. As the bus had to drive through the ford, near the old Lower Light school, to deliver the local kids home, knowing the river levels when the river was flowing was important. On this particular day
in the 1980’s the word was that the river had not risen. But approaching the river Glen could see that the river level had been up as the water was muddy and he decided not to cross. But reversing the bus back out proved impossible. The second school bus tried to assist, unsuccessfully, and eventually the council grader was called in to tow the bus backwards away from the river and with all of the kids on board thinking it was a great adventure.” Stories can be submitted online at the school website www.twpsps. sa edu.au or alternatively guidelines
and proformas will be available at the following town collections points: Two Wells Primary School, Two Wells Library and the Two Wells Craft Shop. The closing date for story submissions is April 30 so pass the word around and don’t miss your chance to be a part of a special history capturing and making exercise. As well as the collection of stories and photos, the school has planned a cabaret night, History Month event and family fun day for later in the year. So keep an eye out for upcoming events in celebration of the school’s 150th year. It’s going to be a big year! Two Wells Echo, March, 2015

I held my mum’s hand as we entered the cold, strange building. The cool air prickling painfully on my skin, raising goose bumps. Everything in the building was overloading my senses. The buzzing lights and strangers chattering noisily were so loud to my ears that I tried blocking the noise with my fingers, the strong smell of hamburgers burning through my nose, forcing me to breathe through my mouth. Even the tag on my underwear was itching uncomfortably against my skin. A stranger walking past brushed my shoulder and I let out a worried “Oh no!” Only the touch of my mum’s warm hand kept me from going into meltdown. We were walking down a stark white hallway, which was much quieter, allowing me time to calm down. But as we pushed open the toilet door, my fear levels spiked higher than before. I could see one of the
achieved this goal, and 34,576 children participated in last year’s national program reading 230,000 books. n Anne was confident those numbers would be similar if not higher again, with this year’s theme of adventure capturing the imaginations of the young readers. n On Tuesday February 17 District Council of Mallala mayor, Duncan Kennington, presented each Summer Reading Club participant with a special certificate and age-appropriate book.

n the second installment of “Writers World”, which features the creative writing of members of the Two Wells Young Writers Club, 15-year-old Amber Ryan, tells of the frustration of living in a world where people are constantly being judged. Amber dedicates her true story to her little sister. Judged – By Amber Ryan terrible machines that I was scared beyond words of; a hand dryer. Immediately, I stuck my fingers into my ears and started humming loudly, desperate to block out all sound in case it started. The other people in the cramped bathroom were frightening me too. What if someone started the hand dryer? I was dimly aware of mum crouching down to my height and wrapping her arms around me to quell the shudders ripping through my body. Some of the nicer women asked if I was okay, and after my mum’s reply, would smile and dry their hands on a towel. One woman however, upon hearing my mother asking to not use the appliance, smiled cruelly, and pressed the button that started the machine. ...I panicked… The next thing I was aware of was my mum’s voice talking to a male. Slowly, my senses came back to me. Somehow, I was outside of the service station. I had no memory of what happened after the machine started, but my body did. My accelerated

heart slowed as the tension left my body, and suddenly, I was exhausted. My eyelids were fluttering shut by the time my mum had finished explaining what autism was to the man, and why I reacted like I did. Mum half-carried me to where the car was waiting with my older sister, and I vaguely heard her repeating some of the mean and hurtful comments she heard other customers saying while walking out of the building. Only one caught in my mind, which was ‘bad parenting’. I know this is wrong. With everything my mother does for us, I know that she is, and will forever be, the best mum in the world. This is how I imagine my sister’s life to be. This is a true story, and I have had to listen to people judging my amazing mum as a bad parent. I hope one day that people won’t judge, and that autism will be accepted by everyone. This story is dedicated to my awesome little sister - who just happens to have autism.

From Reeves Plains to the top of the world, Robert plans to…
R
n From page 1. obert does eventually elaborate on his achievements, to set a goal and then attain it is a “huge accomplishment” he offers. Inspiration for this incredible resume of conquering iconic landmarks came whilst on a European river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. The travel guide was organising a trek in Kokoda to mark the 70th anniversary since the Australian campaign against the Japanese in 1942. Eight weeks later he had swapped the luxurious holiday experience for Papua New Guinea and followed the same path that Australian soldiers trod seven decades earlier. Before leaving for PNG he put himself through his own intensive training program, climbing Mt Lofty three times a week, with a backpack full of Coke cans, which one day unfortunately leaked all over him. Robert admits that good weather for the duration of his time on the Kokoda Track saw him complete the trek without any problems and feeling great after he had achieved this goal “I would have hated to go if it was raining”, he adds. “It is heart wrenching thinking about the history of the diggers and what they went through for us”, he says, “unimaginable and mind boggling”. The scenery and terrain of tree branches, rocks, slippery muddy paths, bank climbs and narrow ridge tracks facilitate an emotion and immense amount of respect for those young soldiers. The 11-day trek saw him crossing water with bridges virtually made out of nothing, and at one point using a rope handrail that was thrown across from one side of the creek to the other. There were huts to camp in on regular stops, some had showers, but if they didn’t, washing had to be done in the freezing water of the creeks. He was able to meet and chat to an original Fuzzy Wuzzy Angel, local Papua New Guinean natives who helped the Australia troops during the campaign, and took part in a memorial service to mark the 70th anniversary. One would think that such an accomplishment would satiate a man of 68 years of age. But Robert was on a roll.

he following year was the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary reaching the summit of Mount Everest, and he decided that he would like to mark that anniversary as well. So on the 29 May, 2013 at age 69, Robert made it to the Base Camp of Mt Everest in the Himalayas. He was the instigator of this particular trip, who contacted the same travel agent he trusted in Euchuca, who organized a group of five people to complete the trek with him. Hiking iconic landmarks doesn’t come without dangers, and Rob’s own laid back attitude saw his comTRAVEL IN COMFORT WITH placency as his biggest problem. in Lukla, a notorious single, narrow, short and sloped runway with no control tower, radar or navigation for the pilot to use. “The trek wasn’t too bad,” he admits, but there were no ambitions to go any higher than the 5300 metres of base camp. “It is dangerous and I wasn’t fit enough”. The scenery, however, he describes as magnificent, “ a photo could not justify it”. And the Sherpas, inhabitants of the areas surrounding Everest and who act as porters or guides to those who climb Mt Everest, were a sight to be seen in itself. “You would see them carrying heavy gear like logs and fridges, building materials, and supplies, just trudging along, it was amazing,” Robert recalls. When they arrived back at Lukla, there were numerous people trying to leave via the airport and they would have had to wait two or three days, however, their travel agent was able to organize a helicopter to fly them back to Kathmandu. This was an advantage of going through a reputable travel agent, which Robert would always advise to do. t Kilimanjaro in Tanzania was ticked off his list less that 12 month later. He describes it in three simple words, free from embellishment, “Best trek. Hardest”. Higher than Mt Everest Base Camp, at 5985 meters above sea level, he says that when he reached the breathtaking summit it was “the most justifying to myself”. He didn’t go with anyone that
M
he knew, just like his previous two adventures. Although two of his mates from home always promised that they would meet him half way and have a beer with him, sharing these incredible experiences with relative strangers was no deterrent to achieving his goal. Mt Kilimanjaro was a nine-day trek, with a five-day safari in Tanzania, which “is not the safest country” he states. Climbing so close to the mountain on one side of your body and having a drop on the other side, was “very intimidating”, and trekking through rain and snow made it a “magnificent trek”. The last camp before reaching the summit was Barafu, where they woke at 11pm, ate, rugged up and set off at midnight, so as to reach Stella Point at sunrise to witness a spectacular view, which is about one hour from the peak. “It was a perfect morning,” Robert said. “But only one guy took a photo because it was too cold to get the camera out.” The summit was Uhuru Peak where they stopped for half an hour and then began their descent down the mountain, the hardest part of the trek was the loose shale, which made it hard on the legs. Although Robert does describe the climb of the mountain as hard, you get the sense that it is the pinnacle of his trekking experiences, and the sense of accomplishment and breathtaking scenery will make it a hard one to ‘top’. Until this seasoned traveller (Robert and his wife Dawn have travelled
much of the world with their friends) and experienced hiker takes off for South America later this year, Robert will continue to enjoy his little patch of South Australia in Reeves Plains where he and Dawn grow chickens for Baiada, better known as the Steggles and Lilydale brands. He also runs a trucking company, which catches and carts the birds for the same company. They have achieved much success in the chicken industry, which they owe to hard work and the opportunities and foresight provided to them by Jake Centenera who helped grow the local chicken industry to its height today. The Blotts are thankful for this and do not take their good fortune for granted, attributing success also to the Australian way of life and the possibilities it creates for those who are willing to give it a go. Robert and Dawn love the area, which offers peace and tranquility, family and friends, and although they have a strong penchant for travel, they emphasize that there is no place like home. So what does this father of four and grandfather of six do for downtime when he isn’t hiking, preparing for a hike or working? Robert hasn’t missed a football game of grandson Zach, who plays for Mallala 17s and under, for the past 11 years. He still climbs Mt Lofty with Dawn, they both love their road bikes and enjoy time with friends and family, although you get the sense that there are many more experiences and stories to retell that haven’t yet been written. No remorse for live bait cheats Local greyhound trainer laments cruelty scandal “I HOPE they have the full book thrown at them.” Halbury’s Kelvyn Stott was nothing short of wild with disgraced greyhound trainers caught in the live baiting scandal last week, which has rocked the sport he loves so much. Four Corners released vision of some of the nation’s top greyhound trainers using live animals on lures to train their dogs, an illegal practice and outlawed by the industry. A number of trainers in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland have been suspended and inquiries have been launched after the current affairs program showed footage of pigs, possums and rabbits being used as live baits. Major sponsors have since withdrawn support from the industry. Mr Stott said the revelations were devastating to the image of the sport and expected to see public protests at upcoming meets. “There’s security offices for the first time at Gawler, which is understandable as there is always an element of the public that would want to take it further,” he said.

Les Pearson reports: Mr Stott felt the industry would survive but it would take some time for things to get back to normal. “It might take a long time but I think we will survive,” he said. “If we go under, there would be a lot of people unemployed, not just administrative staff and stewards but you’ve also got the course staff and those who run food stalls.” Mr Stott has trained racing greyhounds, both for himself and other people, for about 20 years and has never used live baits. He said dogs are usually trained on squeaking toy lures, known as teasers. There is a theory that live baiting improves a dog’s desire to chase. “Supposedly that’s the case, although to my experience, a toy will get the dog to chase anyway because it plays on that instinct,” Mr Stott said. Greyhounds are not considered an especially vicious breed, as placid as they come unless there’s some chasing to be done.

Letter to the editor SIR: The case is plain for the District Council of Mallala to AMALGAMATE with or just be ABSORBED into another Council. For a long period of time the District Council of Mallala (DCM) has been unable to maintain its existing facilities to an expected standard. The townships and coastal areas have been particularly put at a serious disadvantage while the resources of our council have been so limited in scale. Local communities have struggled to bring
their areas up to an acceptable level of presentation and also to be provided with an acceptable level of services. It is evident that we have not been even able to maintain that which we have inherited in some areas, let alone develop the extra facilities that are needed for our community. Our DCM’s budget is consumed by staff wages to a much larger extent than all adjoining Councils. This was confirmed some months ago when comparisons were made
between DCM’s budget and those of each of the adjoining Councils. A recent examination of the staff positions identified in the DCM’s website organisational structure showed ten (10) staff positions, of these there are 2 positions listed as vacant, but of the remaining eight (8) positions, only one is held by a resident in our local Council area. So therein is a stark realisation – that there is a disproportionate amount of our DCM’s rates going directly to places elsewhere. Any economist

worst thing about it, some of them are hall of famers with the best dogs in the country,” Mr Stott said. “They should be punished to the full extent of the law, the whole lot thrown at them. “There is not place in our sport, or society, for what they were doing.
“You’d be naive to say no one does it in SA, although if there was, you would hope it’s an isolated case. “Just the amount of people supposedly doing it, the names of some of the trainers is what got me, you wouldn’t think of them doing it.”
Email: editor@twowellsecho.com.au would be horrified and dismayed by that particular revelation particularly if the economist is paying DCM’s rates. This circumstance really acts like an extra tax burden on our particular region and needs to be addressed with some urgency, as we deserve much better. There is another downside to this cancerous situation we are in. Much of the advice being given to our councillors to vote on is being biased by outside influences, with singleminded agendas being promoted which are often in direct conflict with our own community’s needs. I’m afraid to say that occasionally our own local councillors have been blinded by the spin presented to them coerced into supporting some of these agendas, even when it’s against the general will of our own community. I refer mainly to a prime example of this with our council denying public access to our remaining open vista beach. Just have a look at the current state of the Heritage Wells site and you will see the abject neglect of what should be a well-presented area as an iconic site for our visitors to see and take in. What condition would the main street of Two
Wells be in now, if it were not for the efforts of local committees and their predecessors? Why did it take so long for council to establish an office in Two Wells when 70% of the rates came from south of the River Light? When sizable infrastructure developments are needed and justified in our area, the only way to get access to the level of resources required is to be a member of a much stronger and larger resource base. Access to the many grants that we once enjoyed is now quite limited and very specific in their requirements. Therefore, we in the DCM area need to AMALGAMATE with or be ABSORBED into a larger council so that the level of overheads we suffer now are not so dominant. I don’t expect the DCM staff or the councillors to support these necessary changes to council boundaries, but I’m sure the ratepayers want something much better than we have now. For any boundary changes to take place, it would need a State Government state-wide review. I say bring it on sooner than later. Malcolm Frost Two Wells
I always have a great time spending time with the students at Virginia Primary School.
This year’s theme was “Reach for the stars: how to be your own star via goal setting”
We discussed what are the features of a good leader and how to make good decisions using our head, heart and gut feelings. It is important that our children understand that success is not about where you are from, but where you are going and the goals you set. Local 16 year old Lewiston student Tameka Simons is a good example. She recently won the Malalla District Council Young Citizen of the Year Award for her leadership values and community service.
The North is full of shining stars in our schools and I look forward to seeing more future leaders in our area.
I wish all our students in the North all the best for the 2015 academic year.

Two Wells Playgroup was fortunate to receive a visit from Playgroup SA’s Playgroup Support and Development Officer, Melanie Baker on Tuesday February 17. Melanie facilitated the morning session, making rainbow kites with the children as well as reading, singing and playing a parachute activity. With many families in attendance at the Two Wells Primary School hall, 13 children and babies in total, much fun was had whilst parents and carers unwound with a coffee and a chat. Melanie has facilitated many playgroup sessions in and around Adelaide over the last few years and was delighted to see that Two Wells offered a “welcoming, fun and relaxed atmosphere”, she said. “It’s a well utilized space”, she added, referring to the new location in the school hall and “some good decisions have been made”, in regards to the use of the grant money. The children and babies enjoyed climbing on, over and through the new play equipment and parents and carers enjoyed watching them interact and develop their social and gross motor skills. Fruit time provides a great opportunity for children to sit down together and share a snack with their little peers whilst exercising their ability to use utensils and feed themselves. If you are interested in attending a session please don’t hesitate to contact Carly Heaslip on 0418 803 761 or check out their Facebook page. Playgroup runs each Tuesday of the school term in the Two Wells Primary school hall from 9.30am to 11.15am. All you need to do is turn up and bring a piece of fruit to share for morning tea, new families are always welcome.

Fleur draws on rural inspiration for books Popular Australian rural author Fleur McDonald will visit Two Wells this month. Fleur will be guest speaker at the Two Wells Bowling Club on Wednesday March 25 where her current books “Emerald Springs” and “Crimson Dawn” will be available for purchase. Fleur was born and bred in Orroroo, the daughter of a fuel distributor, and spent many of her early years riding in a truck with her dad. Fleur has always been passionate about writing, but it wasn’t until she was a new mum that she decided to get serious about it. She now lives on a large farm, outside Esperance, Western Australia with her husband, where prime lambs and cattle are bred
and she snatches time for her writing in between helping on the farm. Fleur is now the author of five best selling books all set around Australia’s rural industry including her latest “Emerald Spring” and “Crimson Dawn”. Her writing is motivated by her strong desire to show city people that country people are much the same as them, but they just do different jobs. These author events are very popular so get in quick and book your free ticket, which includes a delicious afternoon tea, by contacting the Two Wells Public Library during opening hours on 8520 2100 or emailing library@ mallala.sa.gov.au as seats are strictly limited.

The Commercial Hotel’s “Douse the Flames” event in Two Wells last month has raised more than $5,300 for country fire service volunteers. Celebrating the efforts of local CFS personnel following the January Sampson Flat fire, the February 8 event saw patrons enjoy a lovely summer afternoon which featured rides in the CFS truck, a sausage sizzle, baked potatoes, and live music. Entry was by gold coin donation, with a mega raffle offering a range of goods and services, all donated by local businesses. Commercial Hotel manager, Claire Searle, said the raffle alone raised $3100, and the event as a whole was a great way to celebrate the important work CFS volunteers did. One person certainly appreciative of the event was Two Wells CFS brigade captain, Adam Harris. “It was a lot more than what we expected,” Adam said. “Rather than asking for help it was given to us, which is different as we’re normally the ones out there fundraising, so to have someone organise an event like this for us, it was terrific. “Most people are very thankful for what we are able to do (and) it was fantastic to see so much support from the locals.” Entertainment at the event was provided by local band Shady Characters and performers from Two Wells based Music Sessions with Expressions. All funds raised will be donated to the CFS Foundation, which supports injured firefighters and their families.
Structure fires keep Two Wells crews busy two wells cfs news n By Sara Oljey N Hi all, we have had a mixed month which began with some of our members representing our Two Wells brigade at the rally on January 26, which culminated on the steps of Government House. As many will have heard and read through the media the rally was to express our concerns with the reforms that are being proposed by

the Government, re the Emergency Services Sector Reforms. N Although we have had a quieter month for callouts, we had two grass fires, two structure fires, a hay shed fire and a compost fire, the latter two kept us busy. N The hay shed fire at Lower Light was quite a big one to which our crew did four shifts with approx 5-6 members in each shift as well as other brigades from surrounding areas doing likewise.
N The most recent fire was the Jeffries Compost fire. The damage estimate was in excess of $6 million. Our brigade did two 12-hour shifts, (very long, smelly, dirty and arduous shifts). The staging (or grouping) area was at Virginia, where trucks gathered before being sent on to the fire ground. These trucks came from near and further afield, from as far away as Morphett Vale, Seaford, Burnside,
Happy Valley and the Wakefield Plains Area Group. As with most large gatherings people have to eat, and the Salvation Army fed and catered for us admirably, including serving meals at rather unsociable hours – on the shift I did, dinner was from 1:30am through to past 3am. And believe me we were very grateful! Breakfast was served from 5:00am for incoming and outgoing crews. Thanks go to those who
supported us. N On a lighter note, the Commercial Hotel in Two Wells held a fund raising event on Sunday February 8 with over $5,300 being raised. Many thanks go to those who donated time, goods and money. All had a great time. N We have had a good response to our recruitment drive, gaining many new recruits, which will enable us to keep on helping our community. Thanks to all. Stay safe and vigilant. Griffiths visits new ground Bec O’Brien reports: LOCAL Two Wells residents relished the chance to “have the ear” of their local Member of Parliament last month when a community listening post was conducted. Member for Goyder, Steven Griffiths, was in Two Wells on Thursday February 19 and spent almost four hours chatting with people under the big pine tree outside the Post Office as they went about their daily business. Mr Griffiths said the response to the listening post was terrific with a steady flow of people preventing him from even getting the chance to erect his banner! The session was a great opportunity for residents and politicians to get to know each other better, he said. “Understanding a community is the key to a MP being able to represent people,” Mr Griffiths said. “Two Wells is new to Goyder and while I have a perspective on it and have spoken to a variety of people over the last 11 months since the election and boundary change, there is nothing like just talking to people while being in their town.
Member for Goyder, Steven Griffiths, speaks with Two Wells resident, Jo Spurling, as part of his community listening post on February 19. “We talked about family court, road infrastructure, town growth, dog control etcetera and I appreciated the effort made by people to speak to me. “I have quite a few things to follow up on (and) I will be holding more listening posts.” Two Wells resident, Jo Spurling, welcomed the chance to have her voice heard, saying it was a great opportunity to raise issues which were important to her in a relaxed forum.
Two Wells Echo, March, 2015
“I think community listening posts, like the one conducted by Steve Griffiths in Two Wells last month are an important element of our democracy,” Jo explained. “They provide a two-way opportunity for direct communication at a grass roots level; for both our political representatives to hear community members and for community members to have their voice heard and get to know their local representatives.
“The conversation I tried to generate included ideas recognising that Two Wells, South Australia and more broadly Australia are all about to undergo significant structural economic transition, and what the potential social and environmental consequences of this, both positive and negative, may be at the local level.” Ms Spurling said she wished to thank Mr Griffiths for taking the time to visit Two Wells and listen to the people.

Lower North Gub Club Lower North Gun Club held their monthly shoot on Sunday February 1. Shooters competed in a new event, only in its second year, but one that’s set to become very popular – the 200 SA Iron Man Championship! This year Angus Tapscott won it, but last year it was won by his father Greg Tapscott, with everyone now wondering who the real ironman in the family is! Scores for the day were: 1st Angus Tapscott 192/200 2nd Sam Daou 190/200 3rd Sean Coffey 188/200 Equal 4th Bob Cook and Martin Collumb 186/200 Junior High Gun J. Tapscott 180/200 The next monthly shoot is on Sunday March 8. Any enquiries please contact the president on 0411 238 391. Residents of the district should be aware that public consultation and engagement will occur regarding Open Space and Community Land use. It’s your land so please make use of one of the following times and places to let us know what you want: Sunday March 15...Dublin Institute...10.30am Sunday March 15...Two Wells Community Centre...1.30pm Wednesday March 4...Mallala Football club rooms...7:30pm Last month I attended the Summer Reading Club party at the Two Wells library. It was a pleasure to award to children who had read 10 books over the school holidays a certificate and book. Last year’s event was unfortunately cancelled due to the heat wave so it was a relief that we had perfect reading weather. The successful children were: Jorga Page, Kasey Page, Flynn Sheedy-Palethorpe, Georgia Biddell, Cohen Jones, Kaylee Jones, Massimo Trimboli, Kaleb MacMillan, Aaron MacMillan, Chloe Sharpe, Emma Sharpe, Kaitlyn O’Brien, Maddison O’Brien, Chelsea O’Brien, Kypton Price, Cooper Henwood, Dylan Henwood, Noah Henwood, Tom MacDonald, Olivia MacDonald and Ben Belchambers. Congratulations and thanks to Anne, Di, Amanda and Janine for all their hard work to ensure the party was a great success. The Parham Strawberry Fete was held on Sunday February 22. I went early to avoid the awful weather of late. The homemade strawberry jam with the scones was delish. Of course I purchased a couple of drought resistant plants from the Parker stall. The other day I was relaxing and surviving the best I could in the stinking hot weather when I heard some scratching on the window. I summoned what remaining strength I had to take a look and sure enough it was Bluey the Blue-tongue. Judging by Bluey’s attitude he didn’t appreciate the attention of the paparazzi on such a challenging day.

Jordan plays world game Imagine being invited to showcase your soccer skills at one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs? Well, Lewiston teenager, Jordan McDonald, no longer has to dream when he heads off to London next month to take part in a West Ham United Oceania elite national soccer camp. The 13-year-old was one of 50,000 Australian juniors who entered to take part in the camp. After attending a four-day try-out in Melbourne last year followed by a second-stage selection trip to Queensland, Jordan is one of 30 players – and the only South Australian – to make the cut. In his first overseas trip, he will share what he says is “a trip of a lifetime”, with family members mum, Rosie, Dad, Robert, and 17-year-old sister, Jess. Jordan started his soccer days playing at the tender ago of four for Angle Vale Soccer Club and was quickly identified as an up-and-coming player. Following a move to Andrews Farm, where he scored an impressive 30 goals in his team’s premiership-winning season, Jordan was soon catching the eye of Football Federation SA selectors. He is currently playing Federation
level soccer for the Patriots in the Under 15 team and considers himself a defender or mid-field player. “I like running and I like scoring goals,” Jordan quietly said. “I’m looking forward to the trip, it’s a big thing for all of us.” During his eight days at the camp Jordan will take part in training, attend EPL games, go sightseeing and play matches against local English clubs. His mum, Rosie, couldn’t be prouder, saying Jordan has worked hard at his soccer and shows great dedication and commitment to the sport. “He reads the ball really well and is an intelligent player,” she said. “We are all very proud of him.” An overseas trip is an expensive exercise and the McDonald family is seeking sponsorship for Jordan from the wider community. If you would like to help contact Rosie McDonald on 0407 621 114 or email jessjord4@bigpond.com. All the best Jordan. RIGHT: Lewiston teenager, Jordan McDonald, is off to London next month to showcase his soccer skills to English Premier League club West Ham United.

Two Wells Football club senior sides are well into pre-season training with good numbers of players presenting themselves for the eight sessions conducted prior to Christmas. This has continued into January and February with some sessions being held at Semaphore, Largs and Middle Beaches, working on endurance and speed training. The 2015 season sees quite a few changes in coaching personnel. Last year’s A Grade coach, Mark Thomson, has retired from the position after four years that resulted in the 2012 A Grade premiership, the first in 25 years for the club. Mark is succeeded by Neville “ Cheeky” Seccafien who has been assistant coach to Mark during his tenure The B Grade will see 2014 Premiership coach Ben Arnold continue in his post in an attempt to achieve back-to-back premierships. Two Wells A Grade captain Ned Seccafien has put his hand up for the position of Under 17s coach, following the move of Adrian Daly to coach the Under 14s, after four very successful years at the helm of the Under 17s, with three successive premierships from 2011 – 2013. The Under 11s will be cocoached by Michael Slattery and Adam Harris. The Under 8s coaching position
Coaches announced
The Two Wells netball pre-season is well under way with trials for all senior grades starting last month. The club is looking forward to a successful year and welcomes back Tanya Kent to the coaching fold. Also putting their hands
up to guide a team this year are junior players Tayla Southwell and Amy Spoodler (pictured right), who will be coaching the Under 10 team. n Keep an eye out for more netball news with Stacey Gameau in next month’s Echo.

is yet to be filled and the club is looking for an enthusiastic person to come forward and fill the role. Training for the U14s, U11s & U8s commences on Thursday March 5. Please note for juniors the club has a hot weather policy that states if the forecast temperature for Elizabeth on a training day is 36 degrees or above, training will be cancelled.
The retirement of Simon Feast and the Canadian adventure of Jacob Hart are the only notable outs for the club at this stage, which will see the player list remain relatively static. The elevation of several colts to senior level from last years side and further improvement from B grade premiership players should see the depth of players vying for A grade selection increase. The club is looking forward to another successful year both on and off the field.

2014 was a great year for the Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club and it was concluded in December with a Hack show, and our end of year break-up held at the Roseworthy pool. Unfortunately the February showjumping competition was postponed due to extreme heat. Coming up on March 8 is a clinic with Heather Lundquist for pony club members in the lower north zone, and March 21 and 22 is a clinic with two-time eventing Olympic gold medalist, Gillian Rolton. Early April the club will stage a dressage competition, and over the Anzac Day weekend on April 25 and 26 TWE&PC is hosting the Pony Club Eventing State Championships at a private property in Reeves Plains. The Zone Championships will be held at the club grounds in June. 2015 is shaping up to be a very busy year. For any further information please visit www.twepc. com.au.
The South Australian State Clay Target junior team includes, form left Tom Hetherington (Mt Gambier), Jarred Nicholls (Broken Hill) and Jack Tapscott (Lower North).
Jack represents SA at Clay shoot
The State Clay Target Shooting Championships were held at Virginia last month, with local junior shooter, Jack Tapscott, being selected in the state junior team following the three-day event. The Championships were held over three days from February 6-8 and Jack, from the Lower North Gun Club, qualified 2nd for the state junior team after a very competitive shootoff – there being only one point between 2nd and 3rd position. Jack shot an impressive 232/250 for the weekend across three events. This will be his first time representing South Australia in a junior team. Jack will be heading to the National Championships in Wagga Wagga NSW in late March where he will compete in the State shoulder-to-shoulder team event for SA against the rest of Australia. While there, Jack will compete in other events over the course of a week where he hopes to equal or better his bronze medal achievement from last year. Congratulations Jack and good luck.

echo sport Two Wells & Districts
Heat wave was just not cricket By Two Wells Cricket Club president Devon Hardiman Due to the recent hot weather the men’s side has had every Saturday cancelled except for the game against North Pines on January 31. North Pines set Two Wells a modest total of 139 to chase with Lachlan Goss taking 3 for 32 and Travis Wake taking 2 for 18. These wickets left the two men sitting second and third in the association with Travis on 23 wickets and Lachlan on 22. Two Wells made the runs in the 29th over with a solid innings from Lachlan Franklin (44), Dylan wise (39 not out) and Lachlan Goss (34). The women’s side needed to win the last game of the season against Salisbury West (February 2 and 9) to guarantee themselves a spot in the finals. Once again the mother/daughter batting combination of Leanne and Jess Pool steered their side to a total of 154 after a 68-run partnership. All the women bowled well to keep Salisbury West to a total of 121. Having made the semi finals, the women’s side had a tough game against North Pines (February 16 and 23). Having a few girls out due to work commitments, Two Wells struggled to take wickets leaving them chasing a total of 199 for a spot in the grand final. Renae Smoult batted well to top score with 25 followed closely by Leanne Pool with 17 not out however they were still 71 runs shy of North Pines’ total at the end of the 32 overs. Two Wells Cricket Club are hosting a Poker Deluxe Night on March 13 at the clubrooms. Anybody interested in Texas-Hold’em are encouraged to join in and even if they haven’t got a poker face, still come down to watch the action and chat to locals of the club.
