Search for CEO over after council appoints Márton After six months, the District Council of Mallala has finally appointed a new chief executive officer. Following the resignation of former CEO, Charles Mansueto, in August last year, Katrina Márton has been appointed and will take up the position next month. DCM mayor Duncan Kennington wel-
comed Ms Márton’s appointment, saying she is currently a general manager at Walkerville and has a proven record of constructive networking and successful leadership in South Australia and interstate. Ms Márton has already participated in several induction meetings and will officially begin work for DCM in early May.
Virginia land boom SPECIAL REPORT: Bec O’Brien A $225 million housing development has been announced for Virginia, with the expansion set to almost triple the town’s population when completed. The project will be the first major development on land rezoned as part of a State government plan to create thousands of new homes in the region over the next 20 to 30 years and could see up to 1800 more people living in the area in years to come. To be known as The Green at Virginia Grove, 700 new homes will be built. Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, said community response to the expansion had been positive. “This is great news for local families looking to establish new homes in Virginia. I recently doorknocked Virginia Grove and met many families who are very positive about current developments in the area,” she said. “New residents contribute to local businesses and help keep our community vibrant. “It is important that we balance residential growth of the township whilst recognising the significance that the horticultural industry plays within the area.” Lanser Communities managing director, Jason Green, said the development planned to offer linear reserves, water features, public art and family friendly spaces featuring playgrounds, excellent recreational facilities, barbecues, shelters and fitness trails. n Continued page 2

$2m for Australia’s largest glasshouse A $2 million regional development grant will assist the multi-million dollar upgrade of the D’VineRipe facility in Two Wells, creating jobs and significantly increasing the site’s production capacity.
Regional Development Minister, Geoff Brock said once completed, the new state-of-the-art glasshouse for Como Glasshouse, trading as D’VineRipe, would increase the company’s tomato production by 25 per cent.
“This project will improve the company’s capability to produce high-quality premium tomatoes at a mass level, opening up greater market opportunities through greater supply and quality,” Mr Brock said. “The expansion will provide
significant employment opportunities in the region, creating at least 80 full time equivalent jobs in addition to engaging a large number of local contractors during the construction phase and providing opportunities for a seasonal workforce.
“The State Government has been providing case management services to Como Glasshouse since 2007 and this partnership has resulted in continued investment in the region. n Continued page 5.

Flu shots available soon With summer behind us, and winter fast approaching, many people will be thinking about getting their annual flu shot. And while usually administered in early March a new strain of influenza has seen Ward Belt manufacturers scrambling to create a vaccine in time for the Gawler upcoming flu season.
Local doctor Sam Nitchingham advises this new vaccine will be available from April 20. “This year our health authorities had a dilemma,” Dr Nitchingham explained. “A new influenza strain (H3N2) had swept through Europe and America late in the Northern winter and the current
vaccine we had was not effective against this. “A decision was correctly made to delay the roll out of the government funded influenza vaccine to allow manufacturers the opportunity to include a vaccine that was effective against this influenza strain. “The humble flu vaccine
is one of the most helpful and cost effective interventions in primary health.” Dr Nitchingham says those eligible for the free government funded vaccine should contact their local doctor in the coming weeks, while a prescription only vaccine to combat four strains of the flu was also available.

New Angle Vale directory A directory to assist residents in Angle Vale and the surrounding areas to access local services was launched on Friday March 6 by local Member of Parliament Tony Piccolo at the Angle Vale Gardens Retirement Estate. The directory has been prepared and published by Mr Piccolo in response to requests from local residents for information about local services. Mr Piccolo said his electorate office continually receives enquiries from people seeking advice on a range of matters,
particularly when they are trying to resolve a problem. “In many cases people just want to know who to contact in the first instance to deal with their issue,” Mr Piccolo said. Mr Piccolo said the areas of Angle Vale and Munno Para are growing at a rapid rate, and as a consequence, new services, social and sporting associations are being established to support local residents. The directory will be distributed via Australia Post to all households in the Angle Vale, Munno Para

Larger lots, along with a brand new range of living options to suit first home buyers and growing families to retirees and investors, is also a feature of the development, with all new homes at The Green to be connected to natural gas. Mr Green said there was a need for more development in the region and he was excited about getting this long-awaited extension of Virginia Grove under way. “There’s been a lot of pent up demand in this area and we’ve already had lots of enquiry,” he said. “We love creating master planned communities from scratch, creating a true sense of community is what Lanser loves to do. Movies hit the big screen in Two Wells Bec O’Brien reports: There’s got to be something said for grabbing your favourite blanket, sharing some snacks and snuggling down on the lounge to watch a movie as a great way to relax. For residents in the District Council of Mallala this favourite pastime will be taken outdoors this month when the first outdoor cinema event is held in Mallala on Sunday April 12 as part of National Youth Week celebrations across the country. In what could hopefully become an annual event, another movie will be shown in Two Wells on Friday April 17. These free (yes you read right, FREE) movie events are made possible following funding from the State Government’s Office of Youth, with both nights drug and alcohol free. The popular movie “ËPIC” will be screened at the Mallala Oval on Sunday April 12 with “Despicable Me 2” showing at the Two Wells Oval on Friday April 17, both com-

more fun than an outdoor cinema!” Supported by the Two Wells Blue Light and the Regional Youth Bus the evening will be formally opened by DCM Young Citizen of the Year, Tameka Simons, and will also incorporate, giant outdoor games, giveaways and for the first time the Regional Youth Bus will be
available to hop on board and check out what’s on offer. Local clubs are supporting these events and will provide full canteen facilities on the night, including popcorn, hot food and drinks. “If successful, council will look to hold this as an annual event,” Janine enthused.
“So bring your blanket and pillow, deckchairs or beanbags and enjoy this free family night.” For more information contact Janine Harding on 8527 0200 or to view the full RYE Fest events during National Youth Week 2015 visit www.mallala.sa.gov.au where a program can be found.
New program boosts girls’ confidence A gender specific program at Two Wells Primary School is helping young girls improve confidence, form new friendships, work through problems and learn skills for the future. Now in its third year at the school the Y-girls program targets girls in Years 4 and 5 and aims to build positive body image, self-esteem and resilience. The program also hopes to develop positive peer relationships and communication skills, present diverse positive female role models as well as provide opportunities for girls to develop emotional, physical and practical skills that can be used in everyday life. Around 90 girls have participated in the program since its inception, with coordinator and school pastoral care worker, Tania Cattell, saying many teachers had noticed a marked difference in the way female students who had been through the program interacted and dealt with problems in following years. “I feel that the girls now who are in Year 6 and 7 are having less friendship issues, and some teachers have said those who have been through

image, physical activity, problem solving and trust. Some of the things participants are
involved in include circus activities, face painting and henna painting, belly dancing and yoga. “One of the big things for the girls is when we focus on the media and how women are portrayed,” Mrs Cattell said. “These images are not always achievable or real (and) the girls learn that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. “Our opinions and body may differ but it doesn’t make someone less beautiful.” Each session is fun and interactive, with participants involved in discussions and practical components. Year 5 student Ella said she enjoyed the program because it was girls-only, while fellow Y-girl member, Ashlee said she had learnt a lot, especially about trust. “It’s fun and you get to learn about things at the same time,” added Despina. Tayla said learning how to work out problems was something she liked about the program. All the girls enjoyed working together and taking part in the different activities.

Students unite against racism By Natalie Centenera Angle Vale primary school celebrated Harmony Day on Friday March 20. All classes participated by wearing an orange sticker or ribbon and created a display to exhibit in the school courtyard. These displays were beautifully completed and demonstrated the students’ understanding of the day, which was to celebrate the different cultures that make up the school and acknowledge every person’s heritage. Lunch time saw the students enjoy some ‘Harmony Day’ games created and led by the students themselves. Maxine Barnet, Aboriginal Education and EALD teacher, and Lisa Francis, Aboriginal Community Education Officer helped facilitate the day and were delighted with the students’ input and involvement. Slogans around the courtyard read ‘Everyone Belongs’, ‘No to Racism’, ‘You plus me equals Us’, and ‘Unity is Harmony. Harmony is Peace’.

tralians, migrants or asylum seekers and to hear about the variety of places people have come from, their different customs and cultures,” Paul said. “It’s important for the community to understand the experiences of refugees and asylum seekers, why they left their country of origin, how they came to Australia, and their experiences since coming to Australia”. Those present were entertained and challenged by the powerful harmonies from the 10-member strong Youth Choir by songs in Chin (Hakka) language and also English. Pastor Chung explained the meaning of the song for those present. Roy Nawl then spoke of the pain experienced by his community in Chin (part of Burma now Myanmar) as they were persecuted by the militia for their religious beliefs. He told of churches being destroyed, and spoke of people being harassed and traumatised if they were suspected of supporting any rebel group. Roy also shared some of his own experiences as he escaped through Malaysia not to safety but to further harassment and hiding in refugee camps as he and others from his country were considered illegal migrants.
As such they were subject to arrest, canings, and imprisonment if stopped by the police. After three years Roy was able to get an appointment with UNHCR to register as a refugee and after another three years, was finally able to come to South Australia. Roy told the audience how he was married while in the refugee camp and his young wife came to South Australia before him. “It was so touching, hearing about Roy having to leave his family, (and) still having his mother and sister back home and knowing they have experienced questioning, wanting to find out where he is, knowing he may not be able to return and see them again,” Two Wells local, Anne Arbon said following the presentation. “It was great to hear he has a new life here with his young family.” “What struck me was the emotion of his story,” another local, Malcom Wilson, added. “Makes us realise how lucky we are in this country.” Roy has just graduated in engineering and is now looking for work. Please call Paul on 0414 248 732 if you are able to assist him with employment.

All aboard the youth bus Don’t be surprised if you spot this striking bus travelling around the district in coming weeks. It’s part of a unique program to provide a safe, fun environment for youth of the district to chat, meet professionals and learn about job and career opportunities. After 18 months of planning and renovating the inaugural Regional Youth Bus (RYB) will be hitting the road for National Youth Week this month. The Regional Youth Bus project is an initiative of Barossa Lower North Futures and incorporates a mobile youth facility and a Facebook page targeted specifically for 12 to 24 year olds. The project will support local young people and communities through fun activities, education, referrals and by increasing the support services for rural towns. “Setting up a bricks and
mortar Youth Centre is expensive and is not easily accessible to young people living in more remote parts of our region”, RYB project manager, Wayne Perry explained. “The Regional Youth Bus has provided an opportunity for neighbouring councils to support youth in a collaborative and cost effective way.” The bus will be a major attraction at Youth Week events happening across the five partnering council regions of Barossa, Light, Mallala, Goyder and Wakefield. Post Youth Week, the bus will be settling into its full time routine visiting towns across these partner regions. Through the support of the Department for Education and Child Development ICAN program as well as a donation from Energy Australia, the old MTA bus has been transformed. Young people from across
the regions provided input into how it should look and many young people gained training and skills through courses and programs associated with the rebuild. The bus is packed with the latest technologies including gaming, music and WIFI, all in a supervised safe environment to hang out with friends. At the same time visitors can chat with staff and access a host of information and support on such things as career planning, health and wellbeing. Although the RYB can only be in one place at a time, young people can stay continually connected with the bus through social media. Youth can make contact with staff, find a range of information and view funny and inspiring stories and memes. Mr Perry said this social media platform is another in-
novative part of the project. Through the Social Media Internship Program young people from across the region will be developing the content for the page while learning valuable skills in this emerging career path from industry professionals, Social Media Monitors, based in Brisbane. Volunteering will be another focus, he said. Organisations and community members can promote volunteering to young people or be volunteers themselves, providing more opportunities to connect young people with their local communities. To discover information, opportunities and events connected to the Regional Youth Bus, visit facebook.com/ regionalyouthbus. Or keep an eye out for it at the Mallala Outdoor Cinema event on April 12 and the Two Wells Outdoor Cinema event on April 17.

Last year I took on the role as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Health – joining Labor’s health policy team. It’s an area I have been passionate about for a long time.
I mainly focus on palliative care, the health workforce such as the number of doctors and nurses, and hearing health, looking after the health needs of people with hearing impairments. A few weeks ago, in this role I visited Tasmania where I talked to older residents about their health needs and also the policy we trialled in government to provide hospice services in people’s homes. But my main role is still to be your representative in Canberra. So if you have ideas about health policy or any other matters you would like to bring to my attention, please let me know by sending an email or giving my office a call. My office regularly assists people with concerns they face. DCM open space forum fruitful Local residents had the opportunity to meet and converse with District Council of Mallala representatives regarding the improvement and future planning of Two Wells’ open spaces on Sunday March 15. Held at the Two Wells Community Centre, the community session saw consultant Warwick Keates, of Wax Design, explain to the attendees that no actual plan had been conducted by the council as yet, and the interactive workshop was part of the process of preparing an Open Space/ Community Land Management Plan for the Mallala district. This plan would assist council to make decisions regarding improvements, and guide planning for the next ten years and onwards, he said. The project is being prepared by council with assistance from grant funding from the Office for Recreation and Sport, and is being managed by Council’s Strategic Projects Coordinator, Carol Muzyk. “It is intended that the plan will incorporate the current Community Land Management Plans, as revised, as well as new recreation precinct plans for Two Wells, Mallala and Dublin ovals” Ms Muzyk said. Accommodating a growing population was a primary focus of the workshop and of particular inter-
Photos & Story: Natalie Centenera est at the session was the layout and use of the Two Wells football oval precinct and its surrounding areas. All suggestions were written down and it was stated by Warwick that he was seeing “bigger change and asset renewal”. Local resident and member of the Two Wells Netball Club, Stacey Gameau stressed the need for the netball courts and football oval to be closer together, citing safety concerns for children walking between the two areas. “The courts need to be upgraded at a cost of $120 000, and to spend this amount of money on their current location is not suitable,” Stacey explained. For this amount of money they should be moved altogether to a safer spot. “We need this change to happen.” Consultant Sue Suters, of Suter Planners, addressed the differing opinions from various members of the community, especially when it came to introducing change, and was able to negotiate through, at times, tense discussion by reiterating the fact that all ideas, suggestions and queries would be noted and in turn examined by council.

The need for a children’s playground within the oval precinct was also noted by resident and vice president of the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club, Tony Lange, who pointed out the
Football association spreads over three different councils, and that “Two Wells Football Club is the only football club in the whole association that doesn’t have a playground within the club premises”. The use of the BMX tracks was raised, the need for a Skate Park and new public toilets, proper safety gates for the current playground, improvement of footpaths, and making use of the unutilized space behind the oval and netball courts, which could provide extra space for a future soccer and hockey club. The end of the session saw Warwick note there were some conflicting comments, but also interesting opportunities that council can now investigate. Ms Muzyk stated the need to hear from the aged and those with disabilities, she said “it’s very important
we make our open spaces inclusive”. Surveys were still able to be completed by those residents who were unable to attend and Carol was hoping to ensure all people who had an issue or query would be addressed. “Council realises the importance of community input into the development of these documents hence why we are engaging with the community during the initial stages of the project,” she said. Proud member of the Two Wells community Jenny Dowling was delighted the community is being involved in the future planning of open spaces for the town and relished the opportunity to participate in the sessions, noting that she “would love to see the vacant lands used”. Diane Meaney of the Two Wells Tennis Club noted that the afternoon was “a productive session” and that “it really is about time that we had our facilities upgraded”. Mid June should see another community consultation on council’s Open Space Strategy. Further information can be found on the council’s website www. mallala.sa.gov.au or contact Carol Muzyk directly on (08) 8520 3360 for any questions about the opportunity to be involved or about the Open Space Plan itself.

Locals share in flipping fundraiser The Two Wells Uniting Church’s annual Pancake Day breakfast has raised just over $1300 this year, with the funds earmarked to support the efforts of the local pastoral care worker at Two Wells Primary School. Uniting Church volunteer, Pam Duncan, said the pancake day effort was split over two events, one at the Two Wells Primary School and the other outside the local post office. As well as yummy pancakes, tea, coffee and a sausage sizzle residents were treated to a trading table full of hand made items and delicious cakes
and biscuits. Pam wished to thank all the great volunteers who contributed by cooking, serving, making cakes, loading and unloading the BBQ tables, and goods, with special thanks to Prime Valley Meats for donating the sausages. “Thanks also to those who bought pancakes, sausages, and trading table merchandise,” Pam added. “It all makes for a very supportive community for a very special project for the Two Wells Primary School’s pastoral care worker. “Thank you everybody.”

John Stewart and David Thompson enjoying the afternoon tea provided by the Two Wells Bowling Club ladies after an “excellent author event. It is well worth coming and listening to these experiences” they both said.
Fleur returns ‘home’ for book launch On Wednesday March 25 the Two Wells library held its first author event of 2015 at the Two Wells Bowling Club. Fleur McDonald, dubbed ‘Australian women’s favourite storyteller’, spoke to a capacity crowd about her new title ‘Emerald Springs’, which she is currently promoting on her national tour. Author of five best selling books, all of which are set around Australia’s rural industry, Fleur is no stranger to the northern plains. She fondly recalls driving through Virginia on her way home from boarding school in Adelaide to Orroroo in the mid-north of South Australia, and was pleased to be back and see some familiar sights. Having grown up on her parent’s property and then studying Agribusiness at college she stated that it is a passion of hers “to bring women into the agricultural industry”. Her stories center around strong female characters, emphasizing that “women are pretty integral to farming operations” and she endeavors to bring farming and the agricultural industry to her reader’s awareness, as well as writing for entertainment. Now living on a property in Esperance, Western Australia, she says, “I can write with authority about the despair and heartbreak of feeding animals throughout a drought”, having experienced this herself, adding “drought can turn dreams into dust”, an issue that one of her novels ‘Blue Skies’ touches on. Fleur opened her talk by explaining that identity was an important theme in her own life and read the audience one of her favourite quotes, “Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you ought to be?”. Fleur didn’t want to be known just as somebody’s wife, or not know who she was as a person once her children had grown up and moved on. She didn’t want to get caught up in the normality of what life can become, “getting lost in the haze” where relationships can be taken for granted and you can forget about your own self and who you are. She says that upon turning 40 she reflected on herself and how she had grown more confident. Confident in her ability and confident in her own skin. And her characters reflect this, they change and grow. They are different at the end of the story, to what they were at the beginning and she admits that the characters she creates are the sort of people that she Two Wells Echo, April, 2015
Photos & Story: Natalie Centenera would like to have as friends. Fleur says of herself, “I’m still a work in progress”, and if that attitude translates to her novels, fans of her work can be assured of more best-sellers, with reviews of ‘Emerald Springs’ touting it as her best yet. The main character of this latest offering is a young woman who needs to clear her name after finding herself as the main suspect in the theft of the local rodeo’s takings. Mystery and crime in her books hold more attraction to her than romance, the happy ending where boy gets girl, “is not what I’m about”. She hinted that her next book ‘Indigo Storm’ will delve into the world of rural crime and bring to light the extent of this issue in the north. Fleur also loves history and reflects on the past in her stories. “It’s a great way to bring history into my books,” she said. Audience members, those who were familiar to her work already and those that were eager to get a taste, flocked to purchase ‘Emerald Springs’. A genuine love of the stories, and now the author herself, was felt around the room. Carole Bywaters of Korunye was delighted to be able to attend and listen to Fleur as she had read most of her novels and particularly liked how Fleur could describe a scene “making you feel like you are a part of what is happening in the story”. Fiona Heaslip from Barabba was lucky enough to be able to attend and catch up with Fleur who is a family member. “I find Fleur so inspirational,” Fiona said. “As a woman in the country you can get lost amongst the men, yet her female characters shine through with strength and power.” This ability to tap into the psyche of women in the agricultural industry also resonated with Andrea Finlay from Gawler. “I have read all her books and thoroughly enjoy the country setting,” Andrea said. “I can fully embrace and identify with her description of the rural way of life.” DCM mayor Duncan Kennington officially thanked Fleur and presented her with a box of local produce before a crowd of eager book buyers lined up for her to sign their new read.

Tapscott, who were very pretty in their sarongs and Ben Cattell, the Calypso ‘groover’, in board shorts and strumming his ukulele. These three ultimately retired to their deck chairs, sipping drinks from coconut shells, under the ‘collapsed’ palm tree. Two Wells local, Di Meaney, also dressed in Bahamian style, led the service with the assistance of readings by other church members. The service gave an informative account of life in The Bahamas, interspersed with hymns accompanied by Glenise Middleton playing the music. There was a very generous offering of $200 from all who attended, which will benefit The Zion Children’s Home and The Bahamas Crisis Centre. The evening concluded with a sumptuous supper in the Hart Memorial Hall.
World Day of Prayer was celebrated this year at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Two Wells, on Friday March 6. The service was arranged by and incorporating thoughts of many women of The Bahamas archipelago, following the theme ‘Do you know what I have done for you’. To set the scene, the church was colourfully decorated with the Bahaman flag, sarongs, tropical flowers and fruit, basket ware and shells to depict ‘life in The Bahamas’. There was even an inflatable palm tree, which sprang a leak through the service, and, despite many futile attempts to keep it standing; it eventually collapsed in a heap - which caused some considerable amusement! Visitors were greeted at the door and given lei’s by Amy Cattell and Airlie

The cafe is open on Mother’s Day for lunch from 12-3pm, and again from 4-30pm until late for dinner, so there’s no excuse not to take mum out! Owners of the cafe, Tony Pietrantonio and Sheree Calvett, are offering a reduced menu, bookings are essential. If you’d like to be outside enjoying our lovely autumnal weather, why not book into the alfresco dining area, where you can enjoy a meal in a relaxed atmosphere, while watching the footy on one of the two outdoor televisions. The alfresco area is great for private functions too, so for your next party, make sure you contact Tony and Sheree. They are more than happy to discuss menu requirements for your party or work function. The cafe also has a variety of weekly dine in or takeaway meal

n Lower North Gun Club news With Marie Tapscott Lower North Gun Club welcomed 20 competitors from as far as Jamestown and Goolwa to their monthly shoot on Sunday March 8. With a $300 Seed Distributors cash prize up for grabs, the competitors produced some first rate shooting with possible scores being achieved in each event. As always the hard working canteen ladies kept everyone fed and watered and the friendly atmosphere made for a great day out. The program opened with a 25 target point score event sponsored by Barry Duncan and Max Pontifex. A first-time shooter at Lower North, John Ward showed how it is done with a perfect score of 135/135. Close behind in second place was Nev Wehrmann after a shoot-off with 134/135 and then third was local, Barry Duncan on 128/129. Event 2 was the $300 Seed Distributors Handicap, which was taken out by club member John Byrnes with a perfect 25/25 to take the cash. Second, after another shoot-off, was Max Pontifex on 34/35 with Greg Tapscott following in third place with 33/35. The final event of the day was the 50 target Double Barrel Championship sponsored by Lower North Gun Club.
Overall winner and first in AA grade was local lad Brett Duncan with a fantastic score of 125/125, closely followed by Michael Veenstra in second place with 124/125. The A grade winner was John Byrnes on 48/50 and hot on his heels was his wife Sue Byrnes with an impressive 52/55. Barry Duncan took B grade first place with a 48/50, while John Ward won C grade on 46/50. High Gun winners for the day included our state junior representative, Jack Tapscott winning Junior High Gun with 141/150. Another well known shooter, Dennis Lymn with 140/150, won veteran High Gun and the Overall High Gun was won by club member Max Pontifex who consistently shot well and finished with 148/150. John Byrnes also went home with a big smile after winning the club Jackpot, a much sought after and very hard to get, cash prize. Once again the hard work of the club members contributed to another well run program and thanks goes to the sponsors, and the shooters who travelled to compete and make it a great day. The next monthly shoot is on Sunday May 31. Any enquiries please contact the president on 0411238391.

On Thursday March 5 I attended the launch of the International Bird Sanctuary bird identification brochure. It features coloured photos of 24 birds that occur in our district on our coast. It’s hard not to be impressed with birds that fly internationally every season. The International Bird Sanctuary will preserve habitat for these stunning and courageous birds whilst putting our district on the international map for bird watchers. I will try to source some of the brochures as soon as possible to put in the council office for residents. The community meeting part of the district open space strategy has now been completed. Constructive meetings at Mallala, Dublin and Two Wells have been held. A supplementary informal meeting will be held in Parham soon. If residents still wish to input into this long term plan then please email your opinions to Carolm@ mallala.sa.gov.au. Residents may be aware that a new span deck bridge is being installed at Baker Road. This will necessitate the closure of the current crossing from 1.4.15 until 31.7.15. When it is constructed there will be far fewer days closed due to flooding of the river. Team Duncan performed in the Parham Quiz night, again, on Saturday night. Team Duncan also didn’t come first, again, on Saturday night. However we’re considering lodging an appeal to the Privy Council in England concerning two of the answers. The Parham volunteers are to be commended for the usual high standard of organization and friendly atmosphere. Having just enjoyed a tour of the scenic Two Wells Golf Club, which ironically is in Lewiston, I will provide some details: The new season starts 11 April McPharlin Road Lewiston Enquiries 85202607 or 0407711793 www.twowellsgolfclub.com.au Great 18 hole par 70 course Friendly relaxed atmosphere Licensed bar + clubhouse Men’s and Ladies Memberships available Congratulations and welcome to council’s new CEO, Katrina Marton.

N A Lions Club lunch was held on Thursday March 26 at noon on the Mallala oval where they demonstrated their new emergency response trailer. N We seek people to keep a look out for people spraying graffiti on the Hayman Road Railway crossing signal box and report any information to police. N Police report there have been a couple of break ins around the Two Wells/Lewiston area when occupants are not home. N Opportunistic thefts have occurred from personal items being left visible in cars, and cars left insecure. N Number plates are also being targeted. N Traffic offenses and defects are on the rise again. N We urge all members of the community to report any suspicious behaviour to police on 131 444 or 000 in an emergency. We aim to keep our community safe. N We would love to see some new volunteers join the Two Wells/Lewiston Neighbourhood Watch committee. N Our next meeting will be held Tuesday April 9 at 7.30pm in the Two Wells RSL, Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells. N The next group meeting will be held on Tuesday June 2 at 7.30pm at Mallala old school, Station Road, Mallala, where we will welcome guest speaker Nicole Dempster (Barossa Family Violence Officer). Nationals coming to South Australia
n By TWE&PC members Alison Gray and Rebecca Puro This year is a very big year for SA pony clubs as the National Championships are being hosted by South Australia later in the year. With this in mind riders are very keen to get in as much training as possible. Following a successful gymkhana at the club on March 1, riders were then given the opportunity to participate in a dressage clinic with state Pony Club dressage coach Heather Lundquist, which was once again very well supported. We were then extremely lucky two-time Olympic gold medalist Gillian Rolton could find time in her busy schedule for a two-day clinic at the club last month. Day one focused on grids and flatwork for showjumping, and day two was held at the Reeves Plains cross-country course, where riders tackled a variety of obstacles, and Gill freely shared her knowledge and experience. The weekend was a wonderful opportunity for riders to train over some of the cross-country jumps and gain knowledge from an instructor with the experience of Gill. Saturday night riders and
families shared dinner and learnt from Gill just how much was involved in keeping event horses fit and the effort that is put into keeping them healthy to compete at the highest level. In such a relaxed atmosphere people got to ask Gill any questions that they may have had, which was a great benefit. The Pony Club State Championship ODE, at the private property in Reeves Plains, is an event of a huge magnitude, and will be held on April 25 and 26. The committee have the organisational and administrative side well under control, however to help the event run smoothly more volunteers will be needed on the competition days. If you are able to help please contact Penti Puro, club president and course designer on 0409 609 600. Coming events: April 4th is a dressage competition, April 25th & 26th Pony Club State Championships ODE, May 10th a Showjumping competition (part of the LNZ circuit), June 7th are the Zone Championships. For any further information please visit www.twepc.com.au.

Equestrian barrel run
n By APEC president Tracey Smith The Adelaide Plains Equestrian Club (APEC) hosted a clinic with 4M Performance Horses’Kym and Candy Michaelis on Sunday March 15 at Lewiston. Thirteen riders attended over the day, split into two sessions, and participated in a range of activities from groundwork through to ridden exercises, which were aimed at improving our skills in working with our horses. Each session concluded with putting into practice what was learnt by “running” barrels, although for most this was done at a trot! It was a fantastic day and thanks must go to Kym and Candy for sharing their expertise with us. Two Wells Echo, April, 2015

A successful cricket season Having won six games in a row, Two Wells needed a couple of huge wins to finish the season on a high and try to steal top spot from One Tree Hill. The final home game of the season was held at Two Wells against Riverside on February 28, due to the heat on the 21st. The game became a one-dayer so both teams had the chance to bat. Some excellent fielding and tight bowling held the visitors to a modest total of 102 off 31. Even though they only had nine batsmen Lachlan Franklin managed to still take 5 wickets for 12 off 4 overs. Due to the one day rules Two Wells had to bat for 39 or until they lost all their wickets. They made the total by putting their foot down in the run-scoring department. Dylan Wise exploded from 50 to 100 in a matter of a few overs (31 balls) to surpass Eamon Fetherstonhaugh at the top of the club leading run scorer with a top score of 109 not out. Quick runs by Lachlan Goss and Sam Zanker saw the total finish on 237 at the end of the days play. The final game of the season was played against a struggling Craig-
By Devon Hardiman Two Wells Cricket Club more side at Uley road. With a strong batting performance from the top three batsmen (Franklin 77, Harris 39, Wise 59) and the clubs’ third century scored by Eamon Fetherstonhaugh (108 not out) the total was pushed to 319 of 51 overs. Captain Travis Wake decided to declare, forcing the Craigmore team to try and bat out the remainder of the day, a task not made easy with Travis Wake taking 5 for 15 and Lachlan Goss chipping in with 3 for 10. Craigmore lost their last wicket on the second to last ball of the day, all out for 43. Two Wells could of had a full day of batting in the second week however chose to let the players who didn’t bat in the first innings a chance to bat. Hitting his first 50 for the club was Travis Wake and he finished on 85 off 47 balls. Some say he batted like AB De Villers or Brendan McCullum. Two Wells declared once again, this time for 112, leaving Craigmore a daunting task of chasing down 388. Lachlan Franklin had somewhere else better to be as he took 6 for 9 leaving the home side on 15 runs for their second innings.
On Friday March 13, the club held a deluxe poker night with a decent crowd of 30 players attending. The poker was played in high spirits with plenty of laughs. Former A grade football coach and local identity Mark (Bugsy) Thompson took out the honours on the night but after a successful first poker fundraiser no doubt it will be back next season. After the Craigmore game, the club held the presentation night for both men’s and women’s sides. Jessica Pool won the leading scorer with 137 runs; runner up was her mum Leanne with 107. Jessica also won the Leading wicket taker award with her sister Rebecca on six wickets. Ashleigh Devenport won the best fielder award. For the mens, Dylan Wise was the awarded the leading run scorer for the second time in his young career beating Eamon Fetherstonhaugh by 17 runs. Eamon didn’t go home empty handed after a stellar year behind the stumps with 10 catches and 4 stumpings. Travis Wake finished third for the association and had every right to be awarded the leading wicket taker for club. Special mention goes to Leanne Pool for winning the association best wicket keeper trophy during
the presentation night held a fortnight ago. The semi final was held at Two Wells on March 21 and 22. Skipper Travis Wake won the toss and elected to bat. After a strong start by Lachlan Franklin (28) and Jason Harris (33) who made a 63 run partnership together, Two Wells then had a quick fall of wickets and recovered due to some positive batting by Steve Lynch (24) and Eamon Fetherstonhaugh (61) to push the total past 150 before a collapse saw them finish with the total of 190 after Jacob Thompson got caught at a silly mid off to an absolute pearler of a catch. With five overs to see out the day Para Teachers lost 2 for 3 with Travis Wake taking both honours. Day two was on the Sunday and the boys came out fired up with Lachlan Goss bowling some serious heat. We all think Wahab Riaz must have inspired him. The visitors never got into the game, being bowled out for 52 with Travis Wake taking his fourth five-wicket haul for the season with bowling figures of 5 for 24. Sam Zanker cleaned up the tail with 3 for 1.
Two Wells netball numbers strong After a slow start with not many numbers at pre-season training, we are now really excited about the season ahead. Following the 2014 season we had lost five girls from our top sides and a fair few players from the lower grades so our numbers were low initially. But after spreading the word we have picked up some new and additional returning players, which have made all of our teams look stronger. It was tricky to finalise teams and there may still be changes to the below, but we are really looking forward to seeing our girls have a real crack at finals this year. The A1 team has lost a few players from the 2014 team due to injury and a pregnancy, but we Two Wells Echo, April, 2015
By Stacey Gameau TW Netball Manager were lucky to pick up three very skilful girls. These girls will mix well with the talent and experience of the girls remaining from last year’s team. Stacey Gameau will be player/ coach of the A1 team. The A2 team has a similar side to their grand finalist team from last year. They have lost a couple of good players, but they have gained some experienced and young new talent. Briony Thomson will bring skills and experience to the team as player/coach of the A2s this season.
The A3 team look very strong again this season. They have four of their remaining grand finalists from the 2014 team, also losing a player to pregnancy. They will also gain some experience and fresh new faces who both bring great skills and experience to this young side. Neralie Wearn will also bring a wealth of knowledge as coach of this team. The A4 team will be a team to watch again this season. They lost most of their team due to various reasons, but we have picked up some great new girls and also promoted a couple of good players from the A5s. We found it very hard to pick A3 and A4 this year as many of
the A4s could have been picked in A3, we just needed to find the right balance, which means the A4s will once again have a great side. The A4’s will benefit greatly from Cheryl Herman and Aaron Edmead coaching in 2015. The A5s have a great mix of youth and experience this season. Due to large numbers in juniors we have promoted a couple of U17s who will gel well with the successful A5s from 2014 and the fresh faces. We are excited to announce Di Hondow’s return to the club this year to coach the A5s with the help of Leah Clifton. Good luck to all our football and netball teams this season. Go the Roosters!

GAWLER Kids have a ball at carnival STORE ONLY Two Wells Tennis Club was well represented at the last inter-association match for Gawler Barossa this season against the Riverland recently. As it is a home year for Gawler Barossa, two try-out days were held in early February, with a record number of junior players coming out to see if they could make the team. The players experienced lots of great tennis and got to meet other junior players in the district. Two Wells Tennis Club had four juniors successfully get a place in the team. Chelsea Foubister, Caitlin Musolino and Tanika Wearne competed

in the 14 & under girls’ team, while Airlie Tapscott competed in the 10 & under girls’ team. Local junior, Jake Foubister must also be commended on his awesome effort to make first reserve for the 12 & under boys team after trying out against 12 other boys from the Barossa and Gawler area. He was itching to play on the day but had to sit and watch the girls instead! The match was scheduled for Sunday February 15 but
was cancelled due to extreme heat. It finally took place on Sunday March 1 with perfect tennis weather. The players had a huge day of tennis with singles, doubles and mixed doubles being played by all involved. Inter-association matches are provided for the purpose of junior development and it is always great to see their tennis improve as the day progresses. Gawler courts hosted a well organised, fun day for the kids, and while the Riverland took home the trophy, the Two Wells juniors went home exhausted but with big smiles on their faces.
By Adam Bail TWGC Secretary The Two Wells Golf Club will get its 2015 season under way with a Stableford competition on Saturday April 11, with a 12 noon shotgun start. Committee and members have been busily working around the course to prepare it for the upcoming season launch. Working bees during the last month have been very successful in preparing tee blocks, fluffing scrapes, and sowing portions of some fairways. The golf club would like to sincerely thank all of the members, in particular Course Manager Robert Hogg, Denis Hart and their external helpers, for their efforts over the break and at the working bees. The members and committee at Two Wells are quite proud of their course and would like to open an invitation to any new members and invite those interested to visit the club and join in the golfing fun and relaxed atmosphere. A variety of full member and social membership packages are available with full membership starting at just $140. If you would like to join us and try and tame our challenging little course and have a great day visit the club on a Saturday and the match committee would be more than happy to introduce you to the club. Golf starts at 11am with tee offs until around 12:30pm and everyone in before 5pm for presentation of the days prizes and a chance to take home the much sought after Virginia Meat Store meat tray raffles. n Continued page 19.
