“I was your mate... the kid across the street... the med. student at graduation... the mechanic in the corner garage... the baker who brought you bread... the gardener who cut your lawn... the clerk who sent your phone bill”, words from the ‘Unknown Soldier’ that fly straight to our hearts, transcending patriotism, as we remember those that we have lost. New bridge over troublesome water Work on upgrading the Baker Road ford has finally started, with a new bridge expected to give motorists an improved and much safer journey between Virginia and Lewiston. The District Council of Mallala says the thoroughfare will be closed for the next two months while the 2.6-metre high bridge is being built and hopes the project will be completed by the end of July. DCM depot operations coordinator, Keith Earl, who is managing the upgrade, says the new bridge will likely see the ford only closed once every one to two years. “In the past it has sometimes been closed for up to four months,” Mr Earl explained. “This upgrade will mean that the crossing is safer, you can see cars on approach and departure, and it will also include a footpath for pedestrians and cyclists.” Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, who has been campaigning for the past couple of years to improve the crossing, welcomed the works, saying State Government Black Spot funding of around $280,000 announced last year, was a major victory for motorists in the electorate. “It is quite obvious to anybody that travels near Virginia and Lewiston that the ford needed an upgrade,” Ms Vlahos said.

“The frequent closures was costing families and local businesses time and money. “I’m very pleased to see some progress. “The ford is finally getting some attention and the state government blackspot funding is assisting in that.” DCM, who has committed $132,000 to the upgrade, shares maintenance of the ford with the City of Playford, which until this month had not set aside any funding for the project. However, Playford mayor, Glenn Docherty announced last week the council would now contribute to the upgrade. “We can confirm that the City of Playford has allocated $69,500 from the Asset Management Budget in 2015-16 to contribute to the upgrade of the Baker Road Ford,” Mr Docherty said. “We have informed the District Council of Mallala with regards to this allocation of funding.” Ms Vlahos said she welcomed the additional resources allocated by Playford Council. “It’s been a long fight getting this local ford the attention it’s deserves,” she said. “I’d like to praise the efforts of all the local families and businesses who fought for this upgrade. “I look forward to driving across the improved ford soon.”

DCM depot operations coordinator, Keith Earl, is managing the upgrade of the Baker Road Ford. A new bridge, he says, will drastically cut amount of times the ford is closed throughout the year and improve safety at the crossing.

BTR EXCAVATIONS

Special Feature

$1.2 million investment makes the earth move BTR Excavations has added six new JCB backhoes to its fleet of quality machines, continuing the company’s commitment to use the best available equipment to produce a high standard of work. BTR Excavations is a locally owned and managed company, led by Barry Flitter and son, Rick. Barry said the $1.2 million purchase ensures the company upholds its lofty standards when it comes to having the best machines, guaranteeing reliability and efficiency. BTR Excavations has been contracted by SA Water for 23 years, the longest contract of its kind in the utility provider’s existence. Barry felt the key to the long relationship was SA Water’s respect for BTR’s quality of work, efficiency and excellent value. The new backhoes, purchased from Construction Equipment Australia (CEA), will replace the older machines previously in use. “We kept the last lot a lot longer because they were

BTR Manager Rick Flitter, Paul Fisher NAB, Brad Harper JCB, Barry Flitter BTR Managing Director and Jason Jamieson from JCB. going so well,” Barry said. The company has always used JCB machines, having a proven track record and

outstanding versatility. “We’re in the public eye all the time with our work alongside roads, so you have

to have good equipment, and SA Water demand that too,” Barry said. “We have tried others out,

I’ve been in business 45 years, Rick for 25 years, and you’ve got to find the best machines for the jobs we do.” With the precision to do shallow trenches and the power to go much deeper, JCB Backhoes tick all the boxes. The machines also have the ability to power a number of other hydraulic accessories, such as compacting plates and rock breakers. “SA Water challenged us on why we don’t use mini excavators, our answer is we’ve got the best machine there is,” Barry said. “They use us as a yard stick for others to work towards, including quality of work, efficiency and cost.” BTR Excavations has been a client of CEA for more than 25 years, along with NAB, which looks after the company’s finances. “When we start doing something, we build up a good rapport with people and keep it going,” Barry said. “We’re getting a good service, and providing a good service, when that’s happening, everything works well and you stick with it.”

New fleet…Same great service!

100 years of the ANZAC Spirit This year we commemorate 100 years since the legend of ANZAC was born.

The touring group at D’VineRipe at Two Wells included, from left, Andrew McLachlan MLC, D’VineRipe Chief People Officer Joseph Quinn, D’VineRipe General Manager Jon Jones, Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths MP, and Shadow Minister for Investment and Trade Tim Whetstone.

Shadow Minister visits D’VineRipe Member for Goyder Steven Griffiths hosted a busy twoday visit by Shadow Minister for Investment and Trade, Tim Whetstone and the Hon. Andrew McLachlan MLC on April 14 and 15. The formal visit is one of three recently conducted in the region, following a blanket invitation by Mr Griffiths to all MPs, both in Government and in Opposition, made last year in

an effort to broaden knowledge of the Goyder region. Over the two days the official party visited a variety of local companies and businesses, included Cheetham Salt at Price, Arrium at Ardrossan, Southern Yorke Oysters at Stansbury, Adelaide Brighton Cement at Klein Point, Australian Grain Export Pty Ltd at Maitland, Harlequin Stone Production at Wallaroo, Balco, Bowman’s Intermodal

and Australian Milling Group at Bowmans, and D’VineRipe at Two Wells. The group reportedly learned much, and the visit cemented the view that primary production and value added industry in the regions are set to be key future drivers of South Australia’s economy in the future. “The D’VineRipe 27-hectare facility is an example of the impressive work being done in

intensive growing in the Two Wells area,” Mr Griffiths said. “I congratulate D’VineRipe on their innovation, dedication to excellence, and on its recent success in receiving significant State Government grant funding. “I thank them, and all the businesses who took the time to show us around. “It greatly assists me to place Goyder in the spotlight.”

A moving dawn service on ANZAC Day at the recently renovated Two Wells War Memorial. We remembered those who fought for our nations and those who serve today. Their sacrifices will never be lost in our memories.

Great ‘Questpectations’ for melodrama show It’s that time of the year again where your favourite local drama group starts preparing for a new season! The Two Wells Melodrama Group will be putting on for your pleasure a show titled Great Questpectations, written by Stacey Murray and Sarah Groom. Sir Kevin and Sir Alavander have just graduated from Knight School and set off to find a worthy quest to start their careers and prove themselves as fully qualified knights. On their way, the knights come across a lovely little village of Glenside, whose townsfolk are preparing for the wedding of the Princess. However, as the town is not always welcoming to outsiders, all the knight’s attempts to rescue citizens from peril are

Paying respects to Private Benjamin Chuck

By Jessica Renaglia, Two Wells Melodrama Promotional Officer poorly timed and unappreciated—causing more harm than good. Never ones to give up, Sir Kevin and Sir Alavander desperately continue their search to find a damsel in distress they can rescue. But, has she been under their noses the entire time? Will they finally be able to prove themselves as heroes? If you’d like to plan ahead, our opening show with a three-course dinner will be held on Friday May 15, with subsequent dinner performances on Saturday May 16, Saturday May 23, Friday May 29 and Saturday May 30. There will be only one matinee performance this year with a two-course meal on Sunday May 24. Seats are $36 for

Two Wells teachers nominated for Early Education Awards

A couple of the best

Two local educators have been nominated in this year’s Australian Family Early Education and Care Awards and could share in over $75,000 worth of prizes and training. Early childhood educators, Chrissie Scott and Kristen McMillan, from Two Wells Community Children’s Centre, were both nominated in the Educator of the Year category and are humbled by the nomination. “When you get that acknowledgement for what you do, it’s nice,” says Kristen, who has been working at the centre for the past four years. Chrissie, who started at the centre in 2008 and has worked in both the kindergarten and childcare sectors of the site, loves her job. “It’s challenging and it’s fun and you get to build relationships with kids and families,” she said. “It’s just a great job.” Now in its 11th year of celebrating and acknowledging the commitment, hard work and passion by outstanding leaders and services in the community, the awards recognise outstanding service in the categories of Director of the Year, Service of the Year, Educator of the Year and the Rising Star Award. The Rising Star Award is open to people who have worked in early childhood for five years or less, regardless of their age. The awards accept all levels of experience and qualification across all program types including long day care (private and community), family day care, occasional care, kindergarten, early learning centres and school age care groups. State winners will be announced on June 5. Good luck girls.

Angle Vale school crossing call Concerned Angle Vale residents are continuing to call for increased road safety measures outside Trinity College along Heaslip Road and have enlisted the help of their local state member of parliament in a bid to see action taken. Emergency services minister and member for Light, Tony Piccolo, was asked at a community listening post held in the town last year for his support in increasing road safety measures outside the school. Mr Piccolo said residents had told him many motorists did not slow down and the existing signage and infrastructure was not sufficient. He also said the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) and the City of Playford had been liaising about the issue and towards the end of last year it was agreed the 60km zone would be moved further north to slow vehicles down sooner and school signage and speed limit restrictions would be

Currently the road has two pedestrian refuges outside the school. “I am very keen to see the council consider the installation of an appropriate crossing at this location,” Mr Piccolo said. Leading the residents’ campaign is frustrated Angle Vale local Robert Brookes, who feels Playford Council is “passing the buck”

and only implementing token measures to appease residents. “They’re not doing anything about it except fobbing off residents saying they’re going to do something,” Mr Brookes said when contacted by the Echo. “I’ve got three children that go there (Trinity), but it’s not only school people who would use a crossing. “There is absolutely

zero excuse why they shouldn’t put a crossing in. “It’s mind boggling, it’s just such a simple thing to do.” City of Playford mayor, Glenn Docherty, says the council has been liaising with a range of stakeholders about traffic requirements along Heaslip Road for a number of years and has recently extended the 60km/h and 80km/h

zones, which run past Trinity College, a further 60 metres to the north. “From Term 2 this will help reduce the traffic speed coming into and leaving the school zone,” Mr Docherty said. “The council has already installed two pedestrian refuges and an extensive 25 km/h School Zone near the College, on this stretch of road. Mr Docherty pointed to a November 2013 pedestrian and vehicle survey of the section of Heaslip Road that runs past Trinity College, which “showed it did not meet the requirements for a wombat, koala or pedestrian actuated traffic signal, where pedestrians use a button to stop traffic”. “As part of the ongoing investigation, council will conduct another survey this year, which will include talking with stakeholders such as Trinity College, to see if there have been any changes in the traffic and pedestrian volumes in this area,” Mr Docherty said.

On Tuesday, 12 May 2015, the Abbott Government will hand down its second Budget. I hope Mr Abbott has listened.I hope Mr Hockey’s budget is fair. I hope they don’t go after pensioners, students, families and those who can’t afford it like they did last year. Last year’s Budget lacked fairness. It attacked everyday people like you. But I have been fighting for you in Canberra. Fighting for fairness. Fighting for jobs. Fighting for families. Fighting for Medicare. But the Abbott Government still needs to walk away from their plans for $80 billion cuts to Schools and Hospitals. Mr Abbott must still drop their plans to slug families needing to see a GP, reverse their cuts to the indexation of Age Pensioners, stop the $100,000 degrees and above all, to keep their promises. If you want to be part of the fight for fairness, get in touch with my office on 8284 2422.

Snakes alive! It was the day a crocodile, a bettong, a parrot, a frog, a turtle, a goanna, a possum and more than one python came to town. The menagerie of animals was all part of the school holiday fun organised by Two Wells Public Library, with wildlife demonstrators from Animals Anonymous sharing their knowledge and love of

all creatures great and small to an excited and captivated audience on April 14. Eager children were given the opportunity to pet, stroke and even hold a variety of mammals and reptiles, including Boo the Bettong, Rocky the parrot and all three of South Australia’s known pythons. Wildlife demonstrators Adrian and Tamara

Sherriff kept the session informative, fun and interactive and there were broad smiles all round – except for a few adults who weren’t too keen on the snakes! The library has organised a number of interesting events for the July school holidays, including a magic performance and a puppetry workshop so stay tuned.

1500 gather to pay tribute Natalie Centenera reports:

Darkness was still enveloping the War Memorial in Two Wells on Anzac morning when residents quietly began streaming into the grounds, gathering around the World War One monument under a canopy of stars. They looked up at the flags flying at half-mast in the cold breeze and embraced the significant occasion with a heart full of respect and gratitude. When the half-light of dawn broke, the 100-year commemoration service began. Approximately 1500 people stood silent, spilling out from the memorial grounds onto the road and into the playground, resolute against the biting chill of morning’s first breath. Some wore their own medals, some proudly wore that of their forefathers, but all paid homage to the first Anzacs and the men and women who have given their lives in service since. President of Two Wells RSL, Tony Flaherty, welcomed the largest crowd ever at a Dawn Service in Two Wells and noted that the Australian flag flying was one that had previously flown over Camp Baker in Afghanistan. A history of Australian casualties from Gallipoli was given, and a wreath was laid in remembrance of John Harris, the youngest Australian to die in battle at Gallipoli at just 15 years of age. The roll of honour was read for WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Afghanistan before Scott McBain gave a moving rendition of the poem, Unknown Soldier. After the Lord’s Prayer came the laying of wreaths by councilor Karen McColl, member for Taylor Leesa Vlahos, and a member of the South Australian Police Force. Families who adopted a memorial stone were able to place a wreath upon them and members of the public were then invited to lay the wreathes that they had brought with them. With lumps in throats and watery eyes, the young and old observed the solemn occasion with dignity and respect. Following the Ode of Remembrance, the haunting sounds of the bugle playing the Last Post brought a minute silence and the warmth of the rising sun. Ian ‘Polly’ Politis and Rohan Powell, two parts of one of Australia’s best corporate coverband outfit, ‘Acoustic Juice’, sang the National Anthem. The Maori National Anthem was then played and so concluded the end of what seemed to be the dawn of a new era in the observance of Anzac Day in Two Wells. Such a successful commemoration at the new memorial was acknowledged by all who attended and the feeling of goodwill and stirring of emotions reverberated throughout the attendees. Good humour, larrikinism and mateship, qualities that are the foundation of the Anzac myth, were alive and in abundance at the Two Wells Community Centre where a hot breakfast was served for those who braved the early morning chill to pay their respects. John Atherton, Vice President of the Two Wells RSL, was delighted that the weather held out, “brilliant morning” he said, “biggest crowd we’ve ever had here, bigger than expected for the 100-year centenary”. Veteran Sergio Bolzon, and his mate Domenic Trimboli, sacrificed their morning and presence at the service to fire up the barbeque ready for the free breakfast served by the RSL. “There’s nothing better than this”, Sergio proclaimed after finishing his shift on the hotplates, referring to the sense of community that morning. “I’m happy to do this for the town” he said. He once previously served the country abroad, but now through his time with the RSL “it’s about serving the community”. Domenic Trimboli acknowledged the efforts of the community in the last 12 months to have the memorial ready for the 100-year centenary, and recognised the vision and devotion of RSL president Tony Flaherty in having it finished on time and in a stately manner, despite the sometimes controversial nature of the project. Tony, and the RSL members, were considerably moved by the turnout, and visibly happy that a respectable memorial was created for a town eager to pay their respects to the men and women who have, and will, serve our country. With what has been termed ‘the rise, and rise of Anzac Day’ across the nation in the past few years, it is fitting that Two Wells RSL has provided an appropriate platform in the heart of the town for generations to continue the tradition of honouring our heroes on the 25th of April each year, and indeed every day that we pause and remember. The Australian Government is making sure the social security system is affordable and sustainable for today, and tomorrow. Regardless of what you may have heard: • The Age Pension will continue • Indexation will continue to happen twice every year in March and September • The most recent indexation (March 2015) gave a payment increase of $153.40 per year to single age pensioners receiving the full pension • The same indexation saw an increase of $228.80 per year for couples receiving the full pension • The Australian Government will also provide ongoing support to pensioners with Commonwealth concessions including the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and the Medicare Safety Net • Concessions for local government council rates, utilities and public transport are a matter for your state government. We will keep you informed of any changes to the social security system before they occur. Locals call for help to record military list In the spirit of the Anzacs, two local RSL members are doggedly researching and compiling in a bid to create a lasting record of local soldiers who have served in the armed forces - and now they need your help. For the past four years Garry Tancock and John Allen from the Two Wells Returned Services League have created detailed folders of information about local soldiers who have served from the Boer War of the late 1890s to WW1, WW2, Vietnam and Afghanistan. The pair used the names on the town’s WW1 memorial as a starting point and are now seeking the broader public to have an input. “For many soldiers who served

there may not be any descendants alive, and that’s one of the problems,” John said. “This will hopefully become a record of the military people from the district irrespective of whether they served overseas or not.” Anyone with information about local soldiers, especially military records and photographs, is encouraged to contact John on 0411 894 245 or email twowellsrsl@bigpond.com. n RIGHT: Two Wells RSL members, Garry Tancock and John Allen are creating detailed folders of information about local soldiers starting from the Boer War of the late 1890s to WW1, WW2, Vietnam and Afghanistan.

A catafalque party from No 1 Combat Communications Squadron, Edinburgh Flight under the command of Sergeant Brenton Atwood provided the guard, and Pastor Scott Combridge gave an address outlining the history of those Australians who have served in war zones since the Gallipoli landing and the scriptural call to “giving their all”. The Parham Singers sang a hymn and wreaths were laid by two exservicemen. A special souvenir programme was provided to all attendees, which included recruitment photographs of

Governor unveils school Anzac piece THE South Australian Governor officially unveiled a unique Anzac-inspired mosaic wall at Virginia Primary School last month while attending a special and poignant ceremony. Honouring two former students and one local who all died in WW1, the one-of-a-kind mosaic memorial was constructed in time for Anzac centenary celebrations following a Federal grant of $5000, as part of the government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program. Governor Hieu Van Le unveiled the memorial on Thursday April 9 in front of a large crowd of school and community members as well as invited guests including Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, ABC radio presenter and journalist, Peter Goers, Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, residents from a local aged-care facility and members of the Royal Australian Regiment. Situated in the school’s Peace Garden near the front entrance, the wall is an ever-lasting monument to all Australian soldiers who have given their lives in war. In particular, the memorial pays tribute to former students John James Sheedy, and Albert Hatcher as well as Albert’s older brother, Howard Hatcher, who did not attend the school. The wall was created under the guidance of Gawler-based artist, Kate Alforth, with all students participating in hands-on sessions last year to construct it. Speaking at the unveiling, Governor Le highlighted the school’s efforts in teaching its students about the past, especially WW1, saying future generations were the guardians of peace. Governor Le also acknowledged the school’s recognition of the United Na-

Bec O’Brien reports:

tions Convention on the Rights of the Child. “This charter states that every child has the right to thrive and participate in their community and this world,” he said. “For this to happen we need to have a peaceful world. “It is most important that current and future generations understand the sacrifices of past and present soldiers. “You (students) are the promoters of peace.” VPS principal, Ilia Tsoutouras said the ceremony was a special day for the school and built on the school’s strong history and cultural program. “Students through our cultural studies program have a solid understanding of the history of WW1,” Mr Tsoutouras said. “They have focused on local soldiers, some not that much older than our senior students. “They have also been involved in personal studies as a way and means of relating to what it must have been like. “Some of the most powerful messages that we have taken from the program and will take from today, are the ones that we must never take for granted. “We must always be grateful and mindful for the sacrifices made by so many men and women and the ongoing sacrifices made by many today that allow us to live in a peaceful community.” Two Wells RSL president, Tony Flaherty, also spoke at the ceremony, as did local resident, Colleen SheedyPalethorpe, who has a family connection to former student and WW1 soldier, John James Sheedy.

SIX-year-old VPS student Flynn, who has a family connection to one of the men honoured in the mosaic, with South Australian Governor, Hieu Van Le.

Amy’s creed: volunteer, help others SPECIAL REPORT: Natalie Centenera 17-year-old Dublin teenager, Amy Paech is a remarkable individual. Currently completing Year 12 at Balaklava High, Amy’s consistently high grades in her academic studies are just the tip of the iceberg of her personal achievements. This young lady dedicates much of her time to enriching the lives of others and in turn, this altruistic nature that has been instilled in her from an early age, has shaped an inspirational member of today’s youth. Amy hopes to complete Year 12 with a Certificate 3 in Disability, and then pursue a career in that industry. She is no stranger to working with the disabled, and finds volunteering at CARA (community, accommodation, respite agency) Camps For Kids, very fulfilling. Giving up her weekends and personal time to attend these camps (up to six times a year) gives her great satisfaction and she “loves working with kids who have all varying ranges of disabilities from intellectual to severe and multiple”, she says. She exudes a quiet confidence, maintains a warm smile, and is well spoken. “She’s not your average teenager”, says Mum Anne-Marie with a smile, “I tell her all the time, she is a BHP, ‘quiet achiever’”. Amy is discreet about her achievements and needs a little encouragement to recall, let alone elaborate on them. She enjoys calisthenics, is an ac-

tive member of the scouts in Angle Vale, has a bronze medallion in Royal Life Saving and participated in and won the local division of the Lions Youth of the Year award in Balaklava. This win resulted in her attending the regionals at Bute and winning the public speaking award, with the topic ‘Still Waters Run Deep’, which then saw her speak at the Whyalla Districts competition, and even though she didn’t take first place she “took great experience from going”, she states. Her voluntary contributions to the community through the scouts organisation saw her successful application for the Scouts Australia ‘Mawson Scholarship in Leadership’ program take her to Sydney in September last year for a five-day course which focused on developing leadership skills.

Participants selected to attend this course are identified as scouts’ most talented and passionate youth members. The next course will be run in July this year and be held in Adelaide and Amy will volunteer her time to help run the first day’s scavenger hunt through the city. In the meantime, she will continue to raise funds to attend a ‘World Challenge’ expedition to Vietnam with a group of 10 other students from Balaklava High this December. “It will be my first trip overseas”, she says with a smile “and I’m looking forward to meeting new people and experiencing a different culture”. The ‘World Challenge’ experience aims to prepare young people for life, with each student returning as an empowered individual with a

global perspective on life. It aims to develop leadership skills in the students, as well as resilience and empathy, qualities that are invaluable in our next generation. The students will spend four weeks in Vietnam, the first week acclimatising to the culture and sights and sounds of the country leading to the second week which is spent on a Trek through the landscape of the local region, students choosing Dalat, in the central highlands of Vietnam, to explore. Physical fitness and mental stamina are tested in this phase, and teamwork and leadership skills are built upon with students completing a two day practice trek at Mount Crawford Forest before they leave for Vietnam, concentrating on basic first aid, team work, cooking and

basic camping skills. Amy is most looking forward to the third week, the project phase, which is seen as the most rewarding part of the trip, where students will immerse themselves in a community and endeavor to make a meaningful contribution to the needs of that community. The final week allows the students some rest and relaxation, and the opportunity to partake in cultural sightseeing and adventure activities and also to reflect on the trip overall. The students need close to $6000 each to be a part of this amazing opportunity, and are working hard to, both individually and collectively, reach their target. The group of students ran an Adidas 5km fundraiser at school, where all students had the opportunity to run and then participate in carnival activities like pie throwing. Fundraising also included holding sausage sizzles, selling chocolates and collecting bottles and cans over the school site, students having “a lot of fun leading up to the event” Amy says. Amy has been running her own face-painting stall at different events and is very close to raising the amount needed, and her Mum has also helped with her own craft and cooking stalls. When Amy returns to Australia in January 2016, her experiences and attitude will no doubt have set her up to offer a positive and meaningful contribution to her local and wider community. One taste & you’ll be hooked For something hearty, quick and easy for dinner, head to Two Wells Bakery and pick up a range of family pies which your family will love! Owners Haydn and Pauline Routley have nine inch round pies freshly made in a variety of flavours such as beef, potato, chunky beef and chicken and vegetable available daily. Other regular individual sized pie flavours including the new favourite lamb shank or curry pies, can also be made to order in family sizes. Pastie slices are also a family favourite. If you’d rather something different, try a quiche Lorraine or vegetarian quiche, which are available in three sizes - eight and 10 inch round, and oblong. To complete your dinner, try one of Haydn’s delicious fruit pies with shortbread pastry which will melt in your mouth. Pie flavours, which are great hot or cold, are apple, apricot, blueberry

and rhubarb. And of course, there’s always the huge range of freshly made individual buns, slices, cakes and tarts. If you need something to warm you up, call in for a steaming hot coffee, available in a variety of flavours. While you’re waiting for coffee, you’ll notice the community advertisement television which Haydn has instigated to promote local businesses. The tv runs non-stop and is a great initiative for the town, so if anyone is interested in having their business details placed on the screen, call in and discuss with Haydn. Haydn, Pauline and their 13 staff also cater for business lunches, functions and parties, providing food just for your tastes and budget, including platters of pastries, sandwiches, rolls, wraps, sweets and fruit. They also have gluten free wraps available. If you require a cake for a special occasion,

give Haydn a call and he will be only to happy to help you with you requests. The bakery is open Monday to Friday 6am to 4pm, and Saturdays 6am to 2pm. For any orders or queries about your next catering event, phone Haydn or Pauline on 8520 2367.

Kite crafty capers Two Wells Public Library ran a successful school holiday program during April. Active-Ed visited the council building next to the library on Tuesday April 21 and facilitated a kite making session on how to make a kite and fly it properly. The fully booked session enjoyed a glorious afternoon flying their hand-made kites, at the dogobedience park at the end of Old Port Wakefield Road. Cameron from Active-Ed guided the children and their parents and grandparents on the best way to make a kite and provided simple materials so each individual could create their own. Simple pieces such as a plastic sheet, sticky tape, two rods and some string were all it took to produce a simple kite and enjoy the slight breeze on a glorious sunny day. Cameron instructed that the best way to fly a kite was to face the direction of the wind and let your kite be drawn upwards. Simple kites don’t require too much wind and running also helps to put your kite into any breeze. Safety rules were discussed with children learning that the best place to fly a kite was in big open spaces like an oval, paddock or beach, and not near roads, trees, power poles or buildings.

MALLALA’S NIGHT AT THE MOVIES A SUCCESS, TWO WELLS POSTPONED Janine Harding reports:

The District Council of Mallala celebrated National Youth Week by staging a free outdoor cinema at Mallala on April 12. The Mallala Football Club, who provided a fabulous canteen including popcorn for the kids, supported the event. The Two Wells Blue Light also kindly donated towards the event. Luck was on our side and provided a clear, balmy evening. “Epic’’ was the movie shown and enjoyed by all, with over 150 in attendance. Deck chairs, beanbags, sleeping bags and swags were covering the oval, making it a wonderful sight. The screen itself was massive and the sound system clear and loud. The Regional Youth Bus was

also in attendance proving a huge success and a great indication of how successful the bus will be across the region. The young people clambered on board and were not budging from the Xboxes and funky spaces. Giveaways on the night included flashing coloured light key chains, hacky sacks, temporary tattoos and lollipops. Unfortunately the planned Two Wells outdoor cinema had to be cancelled with the rains

pouring and poor weather conditions but will be rescheduled, so look out for the next date – you won’t want to miss out! The Regional Youth Bus also attended the council meeting on April 13 to formally launch the bus in our region and to acknowledge DCM’s hard work in getting this project off the ground and on the road. The RYB project is a mobile youth facility and a Facebook page specifically for 12 to 24 year olds.

It will support local young people and communities through fun activities, education, referrals and by increasing the support services for our rural towns. The RYB has provided an opportunity for neighbouring councils to support youth in a collaborative and cost effective way. The bus is packed with the latest technologies including gaming, music and WIFI, all in a supervised safe environment for young people to hang out with friends. At the same time visitors can chat with staff and access a host of information and support on such things as career planning, health and wellbeing. To discover information, opportunities and events connected to the Regional Youth Bus, visit facebook.com/regionalyouthbus.

Thanks Tony for helping our cycling friends in need Recently I attended another popular library event. Our guest author was Fleur McDonald, who has family connections in this district. Thanks to the council staff; Anne, Amanda and Di. Also thanks to the kitchen staff; Bev Molloy, Margaret Gameau and Adele Ray. I also attended the ‘emergency services trailer ’ opening on March 26. The Disaster Support Vehicle will be effective and morale boosting in the event of an emergency. It’s a credit to the Mallala and District Lions Club to raise the thousands of dollars

MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor DUNCAN KENNINGTON required to design and purchase the vehicle. The Dublin Schlodder shelter opening was held on Wednesday April 8. It’s a credit to local artist Jacqui Barr’s talent that the artwork came together in such an interesting and cohesive manner. One of the highlights of the pleasant autumn afternoon was an impromptu speech by Pat Thompson’s daugh-

Two Wells Echo, May, 2015

ter summarising the near endless list of her mother’s contributions to the community over many years. It’s been a great team effort by the Dublin History Group with generous donations by the Bendigo Bank and the SA government. More recently the regional youth bus came to Mallala together with a free outdoor cinema event. Both the bus and the

film showing were a success. In excess of 100 people attended and together with perfect weather the film Epic was enjoyed by all. Some Lewiston residents may have noticed cyclists whizzing around on the local streets. I gave out medals for the Cycling Australia National Paracycling Road Championships. Not one, but several, officials approached me to say how delighted they were that a district local, Tony Lange, had gone beyond the call of duty to rescue a car that landed in a ditch. Thank you Tony; your efforts reflected magnificently on the community.

Last weekend my son and I went to Port Gawler with his kayak. I have always wanted to explore the mangroves and tributaries within our region and wondered where the Gawler River system reaches the ocean. As a kid one of the best places to be was down the local creek or even better a creek that needed to be explored. I can now cross this one off my bucket list. The only thing that broke the silence as we travelled up the creeks was the array of different birds that call these environments home and the sound of running water as it flowed into the creek. Travelling by kayak through this near pristine environment must be one of the best ways to see this amazing ecosystem at its best. I say near pristine because even near the mouth of the Gawler River there was evidence of the rubbish, including bottles, cans and paper etc dumped into the river system upstream from areas kilometres away. This river meanders through many council regions including Gawler, Playford and Mallala. Some of this rubbish enters the river via the stormwater drains. It was obvious that some rubbish wouldn’t fit into a drain system; you could say how does it get there? Unfortunately I have to say some people just throw rubbish into the river and it ends up in the sea eventually, the consequences of this pollution can kill birds, fish and our local dolphin population. Pt Gawler is within the new International Bird Sanctuary, which is being created to help protect resident and migratory shorebirds that gather along the coast of Gulf St Vincent. Some of these migratory birds travel from Siberia, Alaska, Korea and beyond to reach our backyard to feed. If you want to learn more or get involved with the Adelaide Bird Sanctuary visit www.amlrnrm.sa.gov.au.

Anglican Church invite

Two Wells Anglican Church invites residents to attend a special service on May 17 at 10am to commemorate all those in the district who served their country. The service will be held in the original style of 1915, with people attending encouraged to wear family military medals received from all conflicts. The Adelaide Plains Mens Choir will be singing, there will be an exhibition of WW1 memorabilia and morning tea to follow. All are welcome, with bookings only required by groups, no cost to attend. Any inquiries contact Jennifer Dowling on 8520 3100 or 0418 859 875 or Di Meaney on 8520 3208.

Championships bigger and better this year TWO Wells Equestrian and Pony Club held another successful one day event on the Anzac Day weekend (April 25 and 26). The event also doubled as the Pony Club SA State Championships ODE and was held over two days at a private property in Reeves Plains. Saturday was kicked off by an Anzac service at 8am to remind us to be thankful for all that we have, and of those that fell fighting for our freedom. After the service, the bacon and egg sandwiches, and the first phase of competition, was in full swing. With 180 competitors, all four dressage arenas ran all day. Saturday evening there was a dinner for those that had booked, with Two-up for entertainment in the spirit of Anzac day. Sunday was showjumping and cross-country day. The higher grades started with cross country in the morning, while grade 4 and 5 riders

SARAH-Jane Jamison competes in the showjumping phase of the One Day Event.

By Alison Gray TWE&PC member & event sponsorship delegate commenced showjumping in the two showjumping rings set directly in front of the food vans and marquees, which housed the sponsors trade displays. TWE&PC presented a strong competitive line-up of 15 members. Notable performances include Sarah-Jane Jameson, 4th Senior/ Assosciate Grade 2 (95cm), Bronwyn Waters, 2nd Adult Grade 3 (80cm), Kate Halliwell, 5th Senior / Associate Grade 4 (65cm), Taylor Urand, 3rd Senior/Associate Grade 4, Ellie Robery, 6th Members Grade 5 (50cm), Michelle Stirling 4th Adult Grade 5. The EVA105 class was won by TWE&PC member Ashleigh Westcott, and the EVA95 class was won by a former TWEPC member, Tayla Howell on her

home-bred horse. PC Grade 1 riders (jumping 105cm) who competed at this event boosted their chances of selection to represent South Australia at the Pony Club National Championships, which this year will be held in Murray Bridge from September 29 to October 4. This is the third year TWE&PC has run an ODE, and the club, as well as the Lower North Zone are thankful to all sponsors and volunteers who helped make this year’s event, the PC State Champs, even bigger and better. A big thankyou to the property owners for the use of their land, and allowing Penti Puro, the club's president and accredited course builder, to build the magnificent three-kilometre cross-country course, most of which is not permanent. Coming up is our Showjumping day on May 10. For more information please visit www.twepc.com.au.

Barker, Linford tee off winter season TWO Wells Golf Club started its 2015 season on April 11 with a classic Stableford. The opening day kicked off with the customary shotgun start, with Andrew Baker and Hans Linford taking the honour of being the first off the first tee. Chris Barker and Hans Linford have shown some consistent form in the three Saturday rounds so far. Julie Holland has set a cracking pace in the opening rounds of the Ladies Tuesday competition, taking out the main prize each week and playing some great golf. Finals in girls’ sights AFTER a slow start with not many out to pre-season training, we are now really excited about the season ahead. We have lost five girls from last year’s top two sides and multiple players from the lower grades, so our numbers were initially low. However, we have fortunately picked up some new and returning players, which have provided us with a lot more depth than originally anticipated. It has been a complex task for the coaches trying to finalise teams and there may still be some changes, but we are looking forward to seeing our girls have a real crack at finals this year. The A1 team will miss Sharnie Kent (not playing), Mia Darling (knee reconstruction) and Jamie Dinham from last year’s team, but is excited to have picked up three very skilled girls; Hailey Maiden, Brooke Trengove and Amber O’Brien (Sammy O’Brien’s sister). These girls will mix well with the talented Nikki Darling and Cristie Castle, who will play goals while Nicole Hardy, Tracey Agius and Stacey Gameau will make an experienced mid court. Stacey Gameau will player-coach the A1 team. With a fairly new line up the girls took a while to get into the game against Virginia and gave them an early lead. To their credit, they improved as the game went on and had a great last quarter to come away with the win. They need to keep improving and aim to play well for four quarters to be able to mix it with the stronger oppositions this season. The A1 team all had a great game and had a huge win against an undermanned Hamley Bridge side. Their defensive efforts all the way down the court were brilliant. Hailey Maiden took lots of intercepts and Amber O’Brien pulled in many rebounds. The A1 goalies Nicole Darling and Cristie Castle shot well to capitalise on these opportunities. The decision making and timing down the court was much better this week, as they are starting to gel better as a team. The A2’s have a similar side to their grand final team from last year. President Steph Walker will play goals, Maddy Seccafien, Steph Agnello and Cassie Kent will run the centre court with Rhiannon Wendland in defence. They have lost Neralie Wearn

Report: Stacey Gameau TW Netball Club senior netball manager who is having another baby, and Trisha Beere who’s not playing this year. However, they have gained Briony Thomson in goals who, after a fantastic season in A3 last year, will bring skills and experience to the team as their new player-coach. Imogen Quill is a fresh face to the club with an abundance of raw talent and versatility. Tamara Eves returns to Two Wells with extra skills and has trialled well to earn her spot in A2. These girls had a great game against Virginia winning easily, and have shown they will be up there at the end of the season if they continue to improve. The A2s had a great win again against Hamley Bridge even without player coach Briony Thomson on the court. Madeleine Seccafien had an awesome game at WA and Steph Walker shot well really well. The A3 team look very strong again this season. They have four of their remaining grand finalists from 2014, also losing a player to pregnancy. They will gain some experience and fresh new faces who bring great skills and experience to this young side. Brooke Schuit will stay at GS, with Shannen Weir moving into GA from the centre court. Kate Lange and Karen Grimazio will provide speed through the centre, with their fellow mid-courter yet to be decided from the A4 following an early injury. Kylie Lowe has shown early that she is deserving of her jump up from the A5s, and is taking every opportunity to learn from her more experienced defensive teams mates in Jayne Plummer and Cheryl Herman. Neralie Wearn is excited about being a non-playing coach of these girls this year. The A3s had a wet start against Virginia, but played really well to come away with a big win. The A3s had a massive win against Hamley Bridge, the girls lucked out and had to play in the pouring rain again. Brooke Schuit actually shot 71 of the 78 goals, which has to be some sort of record. The A4s will be a team to watch again this season.

They lost many girls for a variety of reasons from last years premiership side, but have picked up some great new girls and also promoted a couple of worthy players from the A5s. We found it very hard to separate these girls from the A3s this year, which means they will once again have a great side. Sarah Dinham, Rachel Wendland and Sharna Rendell have trialled well and have the chance to prove themselves in A4 goals. Abby Playfair will play her first year in seniors in this team, bringing lots of versatility alongside the talented and reliable Rachel Lange. We also have some very impressive new girls in this team with Kim Arnold in defence and Vicki Kulwikowski and Chantel Harris in the centre court. The A4’s will benefit greatly from Cheryl Herman and Aaron Edmead coaching in 2015. They had a tough first match but had some great passages of play, and will only improve from here on. They played well against the A5s in their scratch match and are looking forward to their next game

THE Under 10 netball team acknowledged Anzac Day with a minute’s silence before their game against Hamley Bridge. as a more settled side. The A5s have a great mix of youth and experience this season. Lily Playfair and Tayla Southwell will play their first year of seniors. Alison Eland, Megan Wandel, Jessica Stringer and Brooke Mullins return from good seasons in A5 last year. We also have new player Melanie Sochacki who will bring skill and experience to the team. We are excited to say Di Hondow will return to the club this year to coach the A5s with the help of Leah Clifton. The A5s have a few byes this season as Virginia and Hamley

don’t have A5 so they won’t play until round 4. They had a scratch match against the A4s as Hamley don’t have an A4 either. Dianne Hondow pulled on a dress and had a great game with the girls. Net Set go will be running again this year – thanks to Bec O’Brien and Michelle Dimasi for setting this up again after a couple of successful years. In the U10s it's Tayla and Amy’s first year coaching after helping with Net Set Go last year. They had a draw against Virginia and won against Hamley Bridge. Rachel Wendland moves up to

coach U13As after a very successful season coaching the 10s last year. They beat Virginia by one but went down to Hamley Bridge. Gaynor is continuing as U15 coach. They had a bye against Virginia and had a close game against Hamley Bridge to go down by four. Tanya Kent is coming out of retirement to coach the U17s along side the fresh face and great netball knowledge of Steve O'Brien. The U17s had a huge win versus Virginia and played really well to have a draw against Hamley Bridge.

Specialist coaching helps Trinity tackle season

THUNDERBIRDS player and former Trinity student, Leigh Waddington, along with team member Erin Bell (both pictured centre), with Trinity Netball Academy students they coached as part of a special program run by the school.

AFTER eight weeks of special coaching with Thunderbirds players, Erin Bell plus Leigh Waddington (a former Trinity student), Kate Shimmin and Sam Poolman, Trinity College Academy netballers are hoping this will assist them with an International title. Erin Bell ran workshops for two age groups 1417 years and 11-13 years that incorporated general skills, footwork, mid-court play, goaling, defensive skills and full team strategies. Students will now tackle the upcoming season with a boost in their confidence with the knowledge that they have learned from the best in the business. All players were selected at trials at the start of 2015 and have incorporated these sessions with other Academy activities such as STARplex strength, conditioning and fitness classes, nutrition and diet classes, umpiring and coaching courses and netball carnivals. The Open A and 8/9A Trinity teams will also represent the college on the Gold Coast in July as part of the World Sports Carnival, with over 60 teams from across the globe competing. Roosters start season 2015 with a bang THE 2015 season has started well for both the A & B grades with the A grade recording three wins from three starts, and the Reserves scoring two wins. The B’s had a very good win against Virginia, at Virginia, despite a number of players unavailable for pre-season training and a question mark over their fitness. This was followed up by a huge win against Hamley Bridge

By Neville Seccafien Two Wells A grade coach

Shannon Slattery, due to work commitments in Tasmania. However, the resulting win of 10.10 to 4.4 was very pleasing. To restrict Virginia to one goal to half time with their powerhouse forward line was a credit to our defence of Pontt, Hardiman, Daly, Hart, O’Brien and Wise. The game against Hamley Bridge was an easy win of 46.23 to 0.1, due to the mass exodus of

players from Hamley at the end of last season. The pleasing part of this game was the fact that 17 of the 21 Roosters players kicked goals. We look forward to the return of some key players in Dylan Wise, Khan Leighton and Fethers from injury in the coming weeks as we take on HW Eagles, Mallala and Balaklava in the next month.
