bright future ahead
20 seconds from glory Bec O’Brien reports:
New District Council of Mallala chief executive officer, Katrina Marton, has only been in the job for a few short months but she’s already looking ahead with confidence and believes the future looks bright for the district. The Echo sat down with Ms Marton last month for an open and frank “meet and greet”, where Ms Marton was keen for a “team

She has supported a move to transfer council’s administration to Two Wells, as outlined in this financial year’s annual business plan (see separate story) and cites regional collaboration, further strengthening community spirit and improving council/community interaction as priorities. n Continued Page 2

• From Page 1 “We’re here to serve the community at the end of the day (and) a community and a council that’s aligned is a hell of a lot more powerful. “It’s how we get Mallala (council) on the map. “We’ve got to be ‘team Mallala’ and that’s where I’m coming from.” Mallala council is an evolving organisation Ms Marton believes, stating it is modernising itself in many ways. Her immediate priorities include finalising the 2015/16 business plan and budget, working through the Two Wells Town Centre DPA, furthering the town’s northern residential development, and broadening collaboration with neighbouring regions. The next priority is developing a new Strategic Plan for council. “It’s the most important piece of work because it is in a sense where the council and the administration meet and the direction is set for council’s term. “That for me is absolutely critical. It’s the one piece for the community that defines the next four years.” Regional collaboration, the economic development of horticultural industries and water projects in the district were also important, she said. “I think there’s a lot of potential and lots of positive energy to tap into.”

Report and photos: Bec O’Brien Nature was given a helping hand on the weekend with volunteers planting 500 native coastal plants along closed tracks at Thompsons Beach. The mass planting is part of the Natural Resource Management’s coastal program, which is working in partnership with the District Council of Mallala to improve remnant vegetation along the district’s coastline. All of the seed for the plants was collected on site, with about 15 volunteers, including some keen children, digging in and getting their hands dirty to put them into the ground. Around 40 people have lent a hand in recent weeks to plant almost 5500 plants in total at other coastal sites including Parham, Light Beach, Port Prime and Port Gawler.

And while you’re thinking, why not consider joining this new group whose main aim is to give back to the community and help out local residents in need? The Two Wells Lions Club has eight members at the time of printing, and hopes to encourage more people to sign up so it

With Rodney Mildred at the helm and a raft of other locals putting their hand up to join, the Two Wells Lions Club is officially a sub-branch of Mallala Lions. The group hopes to raise funds to plow back into the community and seeks to assist those in need. “We’d love to have a ‘dial a Lion’ type thing going in the

future,” Rodney enthused. “It’d be if someone is in need, they might be elderly or just need their lawn mowed or a gutter fixed, they could give us a call and we can send someone around to help them when we can for perhaps a small donation to Lions.” One of the first things the group hopes to achieve is a memorandum of understanding with the District Council of Mallala with regard to the historic wells area, something close to the group’s heart being our town’s namesake.
The Two Wells Lions Club is only in its infancy but the group is big on passion and enthusiasm and they’re keen to hear what you have to say. “This is an opportunity for young people to be pro-active in their community,” Rodney said. “New members are more than welcome and we’d love to hear people’s ideas of what sorts of projects we should be involved in around town.” If you are interested in joining, or would love further information, contact Rodney Mildred on 0427 351 650.

Local small business is vital for the future of our community Labor has a proud history of supporting small business. It was the former Labor Government that established the instant asset tax write-off and the accelerated deduction for motor vehicles which increased cash flow for small businesses. In Government, Labor also introduced a further cash flow measure by allowing businesses to carry back tax losses against profits of a previous year. I will be continuing to engage with business owners all around the Wakefield Electorate to hear what matters to them. This week a ‘Business Survey’ was sent to every business in Wakefield. The responses will allow me to promote the great businesses which exist across Wakefield and fight for them in Parliament on the issues which matter most to them. It’s all part of my fight for the future of our community. If you run a small business and want me to know more about it get in touch with my office.

Youth bus arrives in town Bec O’Brien reports: The Regional Youth Bus (RYB) was in Two Wells last month for its first official visit and was a hit with the many youngsters who clambered aboard. The RYB project is a mobile youth facility and a Facebook page specifically for 12 to 24 year olds while the bus has been fully refurbished to be the ultimate kids retreat. Its aim is to support local young people and communities through fun activities, education, referrals and by increasing the support services for rural towns. The RYB has provided an opportunity for neighbouring councils to support youth in a collaborative and cost effective way. The bus is packed with the latest technologies including gaming, music and WIFI, all in a supervised safe environment for young people to hang out with friends. At the same time visitors can chat with staff and access a host of information and support on such things as career planning, health and wellbeing. RYB project manager, Wayne Perry, said the response to the bus had been terrific. “Its main aim is for the kids to have a safe, fun, place to hang out,” Wayne said. “But we’ve also got the resources to help whoever needs it.” The bus will be back in our district later this month, visit facebook.com/regionalyouthbus. to discover information, opportunities and events connected to the Regional Youth Bus.
Christobel’s Cranberry Brownies a tasty treat Lower Light resident, Christobel Crabb, is no novice in the kitchen, especially when it comes to baking special treats for her friends and family. This month she has offered the Echo readers one of her favourite recipes that is an easy melt-and-mix, and comes from a cook book produced by her granddaughter’s school. “I like it because it is quick to make, can be varied by whatever fruit or nut is added, and freezes well,” Christobel said. “This version has crystallised ginger and slivered almonds in it, and is yummy, and an added bonus is that a small square is enough at a time, so that helps the waistline, economy, conscience and whatever else you might be worrying about.” Sounds delicious so why not give them a try? INGREDIENTS Chocolate and Cranberry Brownies 75g cocoa powder 170g butter, melted 400g caster sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 4 eggs 180g plain flour 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder 1 cup dried cranberries (or other dried fruit, chocolate bits, or chopped nuts) METHOD Preheat oven to 150 degrees celsius, and line a 20cm x 30cm baking tray with baking paper. Place cocoa powder and butter into a large mixing bowl and mix well, removing all lumps. Add sugar and vanilla, mixing well and then eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Then sift flour and baking powder into the mixture and mix well. Stir through the cranberries (or other desired additions). Pour the mixture into the prepared baking tray, spreading out evenly and bake for 30-35 minutes or until set. Turn off the oven and leave the oven door open, but do not disturb the brownie until it has cooled. Once cooled, remove from pan, sift icing sugar over the top and cut into squares. n Do you have a recipe you’d like to share or know someone we should feature in this new segment? Drop us an email at news@ twowellsecho.com.au or give Bec a call on 0419 292 715.

District Council of Mallala endorsed its 2015/16 draft budget and business plan at its June 22 meeting, with rates expected to rise by six percent and the notable inclusion of $250,000 to move council’s administration offices to Two Wells, albeit in a temporary capacity. DCM chief executive officer, Katrina Marton, said council had proposed a prudent budget – her first major policy-making exercise since taking up the role in May – which would pave the way for council to move forward, foster development and investment in the area and encourage growth. “While maintaining the delivery of core services to the community, council will also invest in important projects such as the Two Wells roundabout, which are critical to the future development of the Two Wells township and the corresponding expansion of council’s revenue base,” Ms Marton said. “As predicted in council’s current long term financial plan, council will continue to borrow to fund capital acquisition, renewal and upgrade projects. “Council will be reviewing its Long Term Financial Plan this year, in concert with developing a new Strategic Plan 2016-2020, which will inform the next four years’ annual business plans and budgets.” Rates are set to increase by 4.7 percent plus 1.3 percent for growth, providing a total increase in rates of six percent overall. Council’s LTFP for the 2015/2016 year included a projected higher growth factor of 2.8 percent, which presumed the Two Wells residential development would be much more advanced, hence residents have been hit with a larger than expected rate rise. Council has voted to keep its Fixed Charge at $100 and the Waste Service Charge at $180 for each property within the designated threebin service area. Other major budget items for the 2015/2016 year include: $500,000 contribution for the Old Port Wakefield Road Roundabout $100,000 for a review of plans for a permanent Civic Centre in Two Wells $75,000 for a review of Strategic and Corporate Plans and Structures $24,000 Water Projects Consultancy $15,000 Strategic IT review $15,000 Wasleys Bridge Engineering Report/Recommendation $20,000 for a Two Wells Stormwater Management Plan
Pensioner concession Until this year, the State Government funded concessions on council rates, which were formerly available to holders of pensioner concession cards, veterans, low-income earners, unemployed, students, and self-funded retirees. The State Government abolished all these concessions on June 30 this year. From July 1, these concessions have been replaced with a single “cost-ofliving payment” provided directly to those entitled. This payment may be used for any purpose, including offsetting council rates, however not all former recipients of rates concessions will be entitled to the new payment. To check eligibility, contact the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Concessions Hotline 1800 307 758 or visit www.sa.gov.au. The $250,000 set aside to fund the temporary relocation of council’s administration to Two Wells comes under its plant and machinery budget. It’s a move DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington, says was inevitable and one that will foster faith from residents in council’s commitment to the development of the Two Wells township. Mr Kennington said when the budget is approved more detailed planning for the move to Two Wells will occur, with council intending to move its administration, and hence council’s principal office, to Two Wells as soon as practicable during the 2015/16 financial year. “Such a move has many logistical considerations, but most importantly the plans will be the subject of thorough community consultation,” he said. “It is the intention that council’s depot will remain in Mallala, and some community services will still be available in Mallala. “We will also need to consider what use the Mallala buildings will be put to, and that is something we are keen to canvas with the community.” Mr Kennington said council had considered a number of plans over the years to relocate to Two Wells, but nothing had
progressed and the costs had been considered too prohibitive. “By moving into temporary, but fit for purpose, accommodation, which will be installed behind council’s existing offices in Two Wells, we can afford the initial move, and once on site, we will review all previous plans and designs for civic accommodation” he said. “The temporary offices will be re-saleable or re-deployable assets for council. “The move is important because conditions in the Mallala offices are unsatisfactory for staff and the CEO is physically separated from the staff. “Further, both operationally and symbolically council needs to progress its inevitable move to Two Wells, and this will be an important indicator to the community of council’s belief in its future and the Two Wells township development.” With regard to budgeting for council’s roads and footpaths for the coming financial year, projects currently proposed for its works program include: $234,000 for Wasleys Road drainage correction and sealing (Mallala township) $99,000 Seal Rehabilitation $892,000 for re-sheeting arterial unsealed roads $172,000 for footpaths, kerbing and streetscapes Other notable budget items include: $41,000 for the renewal of the Dublin Lions Park $31,000 for the Parham camping ground $45,000 for the Mallala Institute shed roof $45,000 for salt damp repairs, painting and renewing of fencing at the Mallala Institute. The 2015/16 draft budget and business plan will be available for community consultation until Wednesday July 15. Residents will also be given an opportunity to comment, ask questions and provide feedback on the draft plan as part of council’s ordinary meeting on Monday July 13 at 7pm for one hour but must register their intention to do so. Contact DCM on 8527 0200 or email info@mallala.sa.gov.au by July 10 if you would like to make a verbal submission. Copies of the draft budget and business plan can be found at the Mallala council office, Two wells service centre, Two Wells Public Library or online at www.mallala.sa.gov.au. A special meeting of council is expected to be held on Monday July 20 to endorse the draft budget and business plan. Two Wells Echo, July, 2015

future focus
Residents have say on Two Wells DPA Natalie Centenera reports: A strong number of residents and retailers were present at the June 17 information session regarding the Two Wells Town Centre Development Plan Amendment. In essence, residents who were present at the community centre were given an update as to what the proposed changes to the town centre would be and how that differed from the existing development plan. Primarily, the town centre zone has been slightly expanded to include further future services, and a residential policy area within the residential zone has been created. A residential policy area will make it easier to support development such as residential flat buildings, aged person’s accommodation, nursing homes and retirement villages, adjacent to the Two Wells town centre zone. District Council of Mallala’s (DCM) strategic projects coordinator, Carol Muzyk, listed the investigations undertaken by council in order to produce the Development Plan Amendment report. However, the main concerns voiced by the residents in attendance were that of public transport, emergency services, retail opportunities, and the time frame expected for the development to occur. The findings of the studies Ms Muzyk presented indicated expected future population growth, provided by the Hickinbotham development, will necessitate larger services and it is likely a supermarket and other non-food retailing will be required no earlier than

Ms Muzyk was also very pleased about the introduction of ‘all age friendly’ policies, noting DCM is one of the first councils in the state to take into serious consideration the needs of the aged, disabled and that of small children. Gary Mavrinak, general manager of infrastructure and planning for DCM, addressed the eagerness of those who are ready for change and explained that for new retailing opportunities to occur, Crown Land, between the main street and Port Wakefield road, needs to be released for sale, however, this process is in the hands of the State Government and not the local council. DCM anticipate the Minister for Planning will approve the DPA in the new year, and council can then start working through the process of releasing the Crown Lands. Following that, it is hoped internal traders as well as others businesses, will see the potential of the new development and invest in the area, thus creating more job opportunities. Residents, Brad and Therese Martin, look forward to the development
and believe “it is a good opportunity, however the time frames involved, make it a lengthy process”, said Therese. The issue of public transport was discussed and the need for facilities to be in place in order to encourage people into the area. “The development will drive opportunities for change”, Mr Mavrinak stated, explaining the introduction of public transport is in the hands of the State Government, and council will put a submission into State Government when the development grows and indicates a need for it. Mr Mavrinak acknowledged the development is somewhat of a chicken and egg situation, services need to be in place before the population increases, however, development and investment will occur when the demand is there. He also pointed out Two Wells is only one growth area in the north, and council is working on attracting emergency services, as well as other services, to the town centre to cope with the expected growth. Resident Frank Spliet said “public transport is a must, particularly for older people who can’t get to town for their medical appointments. And we also need an ambulance”. Mr Spliet also pointed

New arrival
n Devon and Caroline Hardiman welcomed their second child, Oliver Myles Hardiman, on Saturday June 20. Born at 2.07pm at Flinders Medical Centre, Oliver weighed 4020grams (8 pound 14 ounces), was 54cm long and is a little brother for Hugo. Grandparents Jim and Patricia Hardiman of Two Wells and Clinton and Leanne Wohlfeil of Karoonda are thrilled with the new addition. n Send your snaps to news@twowellsecho.com.au and we will publish them for free.
Hello Ladies! Are you a woman interested in being part of a progressive, vibrant women’s organisation? Are you looking to share friendship, support skill sharing like craft and cooking, and also assist in the community? You may find the CWA is what you’re looking for. The Country Women’s Association (CWA) is the largest organisation of women in Australia. The South Australian body (SACWA) was formed in the 1920s, and provided friendship, support and an opportunity to give back to the community. The organisation seems to be enjoying somewhat of a revival in the past 18 months, with
younger working women attending meetings that are held in the evening instead of during the day. The CWA is often thought of as a group of women who come together to socialise and share recipes, but it is much more than that, it is a forum to share knowledge, care about the past and take action for the future. The women enjoy contributing and making a meaningful difference in their community whilst enjoying each other’s company. The CWA was originally formed so people could connect with each other, and Jenny Dowling of Two Wells is looking at starting a branch in Two Wells for interested women in the district to
do just that, connect with each other. “We now have five branches with a younger membership and I am sure that this will be a good connection for women to just get together and share stuff” said Jenny. If you would like more information on the CWA, or have an expression of interest in a possible future Two Wells branch, please contact Jenny Dowling on jennifer.dowling@ internode.on.net An information evening will be held in August if sufficient interest is shown. You can also visit the CWA facebook page to gain more of an insight into what is going on in other Adelaide branches.

Regional Impact Assessment Statement
What’s in it for Goyder?
T
B
EFORE the State Government makes decisions impacting on regional communities, it must go through a consultation and appraisal process known as a Regional ImpactAssessment Statement (RIAS). During the past year I have been calling on Regional Development Minister Geoff Brock to ensure this vital process through the RIAS is adhered to. I am frustrated the State Government has largely ignored the RIAS process which it introduced in 2003, particularly when implementing the Marine Parks, reducing road speed limits to 100km/h and, most recently, when announcing funding cuts to regional training providers. In the training area alone, this incompetence has put hundreds of regional jobs and training places at risk at a time when we need it most. I moved a motion in State Parliament to reinforce the RIAS obligations and that all RIAS are referred to the Economic and Finance Committee of the Parliament for further scrutiny. The motion would have ensured thorough processes are in place to better protect the regional communities. The vote success of this motion hinged on the support of Minister Brock, yet he chose to not support the motion in full citing the referral of the statement to the Economic and Finance Committee of the Parliament would only add to the length of time taken to complete the process. I say the right decision being made is the key, not the time it takes. Sadly, Minister Brock has yet again shown his lack of real commitment to the regions.
Employment S
OUTH Australia is gripped by a serious job crisis. At 7.6 per cent, the unemployment rate of our state is the highest in the nation and urgent reform is needed to support job
creation. For our region, Yorke Peninsula, Adelaide Plains and Mid North collection data is used and sadly we have unemployment at 7.6 per cent, meaning one in every 13 people are looking
for a job. The state budget predicts a rate of one per cent job growth in 2015-16, equal to about 8500 people, but across the state in May alone we lost more than 8000 jobs.
HE State Budget released on Thursday, June 18, contained several new announcements for the Goyder electorate. Copper Coast Highway: A commitment was made to upgrade 17 kilometres of the Copper Coast Highway between Kadina and Paskeville. It appears this project will be starting soon, but Transport Minister Stephen Mullighan has been asked to provide full details. Yorke Highway: Shoulder widening, time frames, locations and costings were not outlined and the Minister has been asked to provide details. Port Wakefield to Pine Point Water Supply Upgrade: Funding of $8.5 million has been committed towards the $25.5 million project which is due for completion in September 2016, which is linked to the Rex Minerals Hillside mine proposal.
Cost of living concession replaces concession on council rates
S Net debt and paying more D
ESPITE failing to invest in job creation measures, the Premier and Treasurer are still piling more debt on South Australians. We will be shouldered with a record $13.7 billion in net public debt by 2017. This level of debt has serious implications for all of us, as we will be paying $1.9 million in interest every day by the time Labor’s debt peaks in 2017. That is $700 million being spent on interest payments in a single year – money that should be used to provide crucial services and infrastructure for
utility prices in the nation, the Premier and Treasurer have again: INCREASED the amount of state taxation revenue taken from South Australians – this time by $149 million; South Australia. OUTH Australians are to be commended on their efforts in successfully lobbying the State Government to reverse its decision to remove concession on council rates for pensioners and low income earners. I presented to State Parliament on May 5 a petition signed by 13,291 people. The efforts of concerned people in contacting MPs, signing petitions and demanding what is rightly due has made a difference. From July 1, a cost of living concession will replace the $190 council rate concession, meaning the most vulnerable in our community will receive assistance towards their living costs, whether that is electricity, gas and water bills or council rates. It is expected 205,000 households will be eligible for up to a $200 annual payment, and pensioners and low income earners who are tenants (about 45,000 households) will now also be eligible for a $100 payment. A shortcoming of the replacement scheme is approximately 30,000 self-funded retiree households (excluding those who hold a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card) will no longer receive the $100 concession previously provided. Payments are expected to be made to homeowners by cheque in September and to tenants by early 2016. Application forms for the concession will be available from July 1 by contacting the Concession Hotline on 1800 307 758. Households previously receiving the council rate concession do not need to reapply.

Taking to the skies is a labour of love for Stuart
Soaring with Flappy Bird The McColl family of Brodie, Karen, Stuart, Bayleigh and Annabel with their plane “Flappy Bird”. Is it a plane? Is it a bird? Well, it’s a little of both…kind of. This unique aeroplane is “Flappy Bird”, Lewiston resident Stuart McColl’s pride and joy and fondly named light sport aeroplane. Stuart was kind enough to take me up in Flappy Bird on a beautiful Autumn’s day and what an experience it was. One minute I’m getting strapped into the seat, headphones are handed to me and then before I know it we’re taxiing down the runway. The next minute it’s blue skies and look-a-like toy cars, with grey clouds seemingly just out of reach. It’s hard to describe the feeling of almost weightlessness of being up in the air, and while there was a moment or two (I’ll admit) of, ‘what if?’ going through my head, I was absolutely thrilled with the flight and my birds-eye view. And it really is a birds-eye view. I’ve been in planes before, but there’s just something different about flying in the two-seat Skyfox Aviation Skyfox Gazelle (Flappy Bird’s official name). The space is tight but comfortable and as she dipped through the sky, cruising at about 2000 feet, my perspective of the world opened. I gazed in wonder at the dams, livestock and trees below me. I was enthralled by what I could see in people’s backyards. The feeling of being in the air captured me and the emotion of ‘isn’t this amazing?’ was ever-present. Stuart, a police officer with the police motorcycle section (also known as the Hopscotch Cop from last year’s Christmas Pageant) has been the proud owner of Flappy Bird since last year and was calm, confident and happy at the controls. He has had a love of flying since he was a young boy, dabbling in radio-controlled aircraft in his youth. “My actual flying career started in 1994, when one day I just decided that I would learn how to fly,” Stuart explained. “I flew Microlight aircraft, which are a weight shift controlled, open cockpit aircraft, out of Strathalbyn until 1998. “During that time I owned my own two-seat Microlight and also became a qualified tow pilot, towing up a tandem hang glider to between two and four thousand feet. “It was a lot of fun but I hung up my pilot’s hat to concentrate on owning a house instead.” It wasn’t until 2013 the flying

bug bit again, and after discussing it with his wife, Karen, who also loves aviation; Stuart decided to take up flying once more. “Being older and a little wiser, this time I wanted an enclosed aircraft so I wouldn’t freeze like I used to in the Microlight,” he laughed. “I did not want to become a commercial pilot and wanted to make sure that my flying was just going to be for fun. “As such I enrolled in a recreational flying school and within no time at all I was flying around the skies once more.” After obtaining his licence Stuart had the choice of either hiring a plane or as luck would have it, buying one. Whilst hiring a recreational plane is a cheap option at about $130 an hour fully fuelled, the thought of owning his own aircraft again was just too tempting. There are many types of recreational aircraft with prices starting from around $10,000 for a single seater to between $15,000 and $150,000 plus for a two-seat plane. But one of the catches in owning such a plane is you need somewhere to “hang” it. Hangar fees can cost as much as $2000 per year so Stuart looked into the cheaper option of buying a recreational plane which could be trailered and kept at home. “After looking at a few options Karen and I settled on a Gazelle,” he said. “It ticked all the boxes for us; trailer able, easily set up, dual place seating side-by-side, dual controls and the best thing of all, a heater.” And so Flappy Bird came to live in Lewiston. But how did she come by her name? Most aeroplanes are identified by their registration

number. “When we purchased her last year I wanted to give her a unique identity,” Stuart said. “Everyone in our family was trying to think of a name that would suit her. “To me she isn’t the fastest aircraft in the sky however she gets us to where we want to go and is a lot of fun to fly. “I thought that the name “Flappy Bird” suited her to a T. “Giving our plane an identity has made her quite well known amongst other pilots. She’s not just a plane, she’s “Flappy Bird”. It’s quite a sight to see an aeroplane folded up and travelling on a trailer, but that is what makes Flappy Bird unique and so versatile. Stuart says this ability to take his plane

wherever he wants means holidays are much more diverse, fun and interesting. The family contacts local airports out in the country for permission to fly out of them or talks very nicely to property owners for permission to use a paddock. One of the trips they would like to do in the near future is to tow Flappy Bird up to the Flinders Ranges and take in the magnificent Lake Eyre. “Towing Flappy Bird around certainly gets heads turning, not something you see every day,” Stuart joked. “I took her over to Angle Vale to get some fuel one day and the console operator said that she had now seen everything get towed into the service station. “She is a huge talking point wherever we take her and normally attracts a crowd when we are parked.” Stuart maintains and follows strict maintenance guidelines to keep Flappy Bird in perfect working order, which means he never gets nervous flying her. Flying is something Stuart says anyone can do, and it doesn’t have to be expensive. The pastime has meant great family trips, new friends and an opportunity to see and visit much of the state. “Flappy Bird has been
n The wings can be folded when not in use. n Flappy Bird has a 2-blade wooden propeller and can cruise at a speed of just under 120 km/h. n As a recreational aircraft she is limited to airspace outside controlled airspace, however this still leaves about 95% of the airspace in Australia that she can fly in. n The maximum height Flappy Bird can be flown at is the same as any other non-pressurized aircraft, which is 10,000 feet (outside controlled airspace). n Flappy Bird has a range of about 3.5 hours and uses just 14 litres of normal 91 unleaded fuel. n Her engine is a Rotax 912 80hp four cylinder four stroke. n The engine is serviced every 50 hours and the aircraft itself is inspected thoroughly by a qualified aircraft mechanic every 100 hours or yearly, whichever comes first. a great addition to our family and has brought a lot of joy to a lot of other people also,” he commented. “I would thoroughly recommend a recreational aircraft to anyone that would like to fulfil their flying dreams but thought it would be too expensive. “The minimum health requirement to fly a recreational aircraft is the same as for driving a car. “To obtain your licence will set you back about $5,000 but I can assure you its well worth it. “It has certainly been an absolute highlight in my life and I love nothing more than taking people up for a fly and to enjoy the world from a totally different and spectacular view.” Well-said Stuart. Thanks again for taking my children and I for a totally unique and special afternoon. It is one we will always remember fondly. Two Wells Echo, July, 2015

n By Bec O’Brien Finding a cure for cancer was on everyone’s minds as they helped raise more than $1000 at the annual Two Wells Uniting Church Biggest Morning Tea event on Friday June 12. Cakes, coffee, sausages, pancakes, scones and of course, tea, were available outside the Post Office, with the popular trading table also offering a range of home-baked goodies, knitted items and preserves. Thanks to everyone who volunteered on the day or dropped by to grab a bite to eat or purchased something from the trading table; every little bit helps. Cancer Council mugs are still available for purchase if anyone is interested. Contact Pam Duncan on 0409 00 2201.

Attention green thumbs: Vadoulis guest garden speaker
By Lisa Allen
Joint meeting
Our last meeting was a joint meeting with Mallala and Thompson Beach. The Lions Club received a grant to purchase a natural disasters trailer, which will supply logistics to emergency services during unforeseen natural disasters in the future. Thank you for the demonstration of your new trailer, it is a great idea and the dinner provided was fantastic. Thank you to our guest speaker Nicole Dempster from SA Police who gave us all a very informative presentation on domestic violence in South Australia. We have a White Ribbon ambassador from Thompson Beach Neighbourhood Watch, Des Quinn. White ribbon ambassadors are men who recognise the importance of men taking responsibility and play a leadership role in preventing violence against women. Our next Neighbourhood Watch meeting will be held on Tuesday July 14 at 7.30pm. Two Wells RSL, Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells. We welcome new volunteers to attend our meetings and look forward to seeing you there.
Blue Light
We had a great turn out to our last Blue Light Disco, A fun night was had by all. Thanks to all the kids who come along, and to all volunteers, for making each disco a success. We were able to make a donation to Mallala Council towards outdoor cinema events; this is a great community event. Our next Blue Light Disco will be held on Friday August 28 from 7pm - 9.30pm in the Two Wells Community Centre. We look forward to seeing you all there for another great disco. Book club book review This historical novel set in the mid 17th Century is based loosely on the small amount of history available on Caleb Cheeshahteaumuck, the first Native American from Martha’s Vineyard to graduate from Harvard College in 1665. Brooks explores a myriad of themes in the book, particularly the strong religious attitudes and beliefs that permeated every aspect of people’s lives. It is a book which brings to light many social issues from the time and country that it is based in, and which still resonates in today’s society. The main character, Bethia, is born into a strict Puritan society and her own personal struggles begin with the fact that she is female, as there are immediate social obstacles put in place. Her father is quite ‘liberal’ in his views towards the American Indians, he doesn’t believe in stealing from or harming the local Indians. Caleb and Bethia develop an innocent friendship, but they must be sensitive due to the constraints

‘Caleb’s Crossing’ by Geraldine Brooks - Reviewed by the Two Wells Book Club Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that has been read by the group the previous month. The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library. We hope you enjoy the new segment and are provided with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read. of the day and the different cultures. The clash of the two cultures is portrayed with Bethia questioning her own religion, and she is increasingly frustrated in her yearning for knowledge, which is frowned upon for women. The book was immensely enjoyed by most of the members, some having read it previously and appreciated it more so the second time round. The language was hard to read at times, as Brooks used the old English vocabulary that was spoken in the day, although this helped to
drag the reader into the time the story was set. Some of the members found the characters difficult to relate to, however, all held the same attitude to towards the character of ‘Makepeace’, Bethia’s brother, a very unlikeable person. The author, Geraldine Brooks, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 2006 for another novel, ‘March’, and ‘Caleb’s Crossing’ was on the New York Time’s best seller list when it was released in 2011. Many of her other novels are international best sellers.

Are you a bit of green thumb? Want to know why your citrus tree is going yellow? Can’t seem to stop your lawn from dying? Then head along to the Two We l l s Bowling Club on Tu e s d a y July 28 at 1pm and pick the brains of gardening expert and television presenter Milton Vadoulis (pictured). Milton, from the award winning Vadoulis Garden Centre, in Gawler, will be guest speaker at the event, which is hosted by the Two Wells Public Library, and has a wealth of gardening knowledge, hints and tips to get your garden looking its best. In addition to running his popular garden centre, which has been located at its present site since 1969, Milton also has his own regular television program, “Get Dirty with Milton”, which is shown on Channel 44. His extensive gardening knowledge will be sure to prove to be a valuable learning experience for all the audience, and he is more than happy to answer specific gardening queries. Seats are limited so get in quick and book your free tickets, which include a complimentary afternoon tea, by contacting the Two Wells Public Library during opening hours on 8520 2100 or emailing library@mallala.sa.gov.au.

I have lived in Lewiston for 30 plus years and have seen many changes in our region. Being involved in a Landcare group has enabled me and other likeminded people (young and old) to work together in the revegetation and protection of some of our region’s great environmental assets such as the Lewiston wetlands, Camel track, and our Samphire coasts, which are world renowned as a migratory pathway for over 25,000 birds. Take some time and get to know these areas, they belong to all of us. Having worked with community groups, I know what can be achieved when we work together. I was reminded of this recently when over 2000 plants were planted by about 40 volunteers, over four separate planting days at Light Beach, Thompson Beach, Parham and Middle Beach. Unfortunately within all these sites there was evidence of illegal dumping of rubbish. All the volunteers wanted to do was plant trees/shrubs but in some places there was so much
Two Wells, Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group With Mark Webb
rubbish it was dangerous. Why are people still dumping rubbish? Do they not realise that we all have to pay to clean it up? If you see someone dump rubbish where it shouldn’t be, take their rego no and contact council. Illegal dumpers put us all at risk by attracting vermin and aid in spreading diseases to humans and animals. I believe communities can influence change and to do that we need to work together. That said I am now a committee member on the Mallala Environ-
mental Management Advisory Committee. You could say it is just another committee, and that is true, but if we (community) want to support and protect the biodiversity of our region this committee is a good place to start. I encourage all of you to visit the Mallala council’s website and find out what this committee is doing to promote and protect our regions environmental assets for future generations. The only way we can protect and value our environment is to get to know more about them. This website enables the community to see what is happening in our region. Furthermore on this website I found a great link on birds. Click on community, then environment, scroll down to shorebirds 2020 program, select or write down the bird you are interested in and an abundance of information relating to that bird is revealed. Wouldn’t it be great to know all about the birds that visit your property? Two Wells Echo, July, 2015

DCM horse facilities study workshop The District Council of Mallala has initiated a study to investigate the establishment of an equestrian and horse-keeping precinct in the area. This precinct could see horse agistment and equestrian facilities come together in a multiuse arrangement. Independent consultants URPS are leading the study, which will also outline whether certain parcels of land are suitable for such purposes specifically. Residents and interested groups
Bec O’Brien reports: were invited to attend a workshop on Monday June 22 in Two Wells to discuss the proposal. A key aspect of the study is to determine the current nature of supply and demand of land available to support equestrian activities and horse keeping in the district, and to identify how to facilitate land use in the future. The first stage of the project has
recently been completed and has determined further investigation be undertaken to identify and assess suitable locations within the council area for future horse keeping and equestrian activities, including the possibility of establishing an equestrian type precinct where agistment and facility provision may come together. DCM infrastructure and planning services general manager, Gary Mavrinac, said the study would be conducted in a staged approach, with
stage 1A recently completed and a report drawn up. This report focused on investigating the provision of and demand for horse keeping and/or equestrian precinct(s) within the district. “While the investigations has highlighted that very little data exists about rates of horse ownership and rates of participation in horse riding activities nationally, as well as specifically in South Australia, the report indicated that there is a demand for horse riding facilities,
evidenced by horse riding clubs in the district being at capacity, and members of the clubs travelling outside of the council area to access facilities,” Mr Mavrinac said. Stage 1B, which is currently in progress, involves more detailed engagement with stakeholders to identify criteria for suitable sites and assessment of potential sites. Mr Mavrinac said no site for a possible horse precinct has been determined at this stage of the project.

Junior winter tennis challenge n By Marie Tapscott

The Friday Night Junior Tennis competition started on May 22 and is using the new FAST4 format introduced by Tennis Australia to give people a quicker and more exciting way to play tennis. Lets are played, there are no advantage scores when deuce is reached, and if the set reaches three games all, a tiebreaker game is played then the first player to five points wins.
This year, five Two Wells junior players have joined in the competition and are having a ball! Chelsea Foubister, Caitlin Stewart, Jack Tapscott, Jake Foubister and Airlie Tapscott have found it to be a great way to get warm on a chilly night and are enjoying new friendships with other juniors, lots of laughs and some great tennis in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. The juniors have been randomly grouped into teams of two across two
divisions and each team is named after a prominent tennis player. Each week teams play one match of doubles and then each player plays a singles match. The competition is centred on fun and enjoyment of tennis and includes a pizza night, a sausage sizzle and a Wimbledon themed night to coincide with the start of Wimbledon. For this the junior players will dress in their best outfits to represent Wimbledon.

will run for about 13 rounds until August 28, breaking for the school holidays. There will be awards for winners in each division as well as leadership and development awards to focus on long term enjoyment of tennis.

After a great shoot off, AA Grade was won by Dino Oliviero with 70/70, with Rito Borzillo coming second on 78/79. Winner of A Grade was Nev Wehrmann with a perfect score of 50/50

Pistol Dakota takes shot at the title Adelaide Club Report • From page 1. The two-day competition will see the top 10 riders compete for the title, with the event being run in conjunction with the annual Emerald rodeo. Dakota, 17, is a Year 12 student at Xavier College, and has been riding since almost before she could walk. She competed in her first rodeo at the tender age of five and hasn’t looked back since. Horses are her family, her relaxation, her sport and to some extent her income. She gives riding lessons in her free time and helps out her parents, Kym and Candy, with their horse training enterprise, to help pay for entry fees, equipment and everything else horse related. This is Dakota’s last year as a junior, she turns 18 in October, so she’s keen to leave her mark before rising to the ranks of competing amongst the open women barrel racers. Together with her seven-year-old horse, Foxy Red Ruffles – Foxy to those that know her – Dakota has taken part in more than 20 rodeos and associated events to make it to the championships. “I love barrel racing,” she commented. “I love that it’s fair, because it’s based only on your time. “It’s me and my horse.” Unfortunately Dakota won’t be taking Foxy to Queensland with her but will instead ride a friend’s horse, Stretch, which she hopes will bring great success. Best of luck Dakota, let the dirt fly.
n By Jim Innes, APSC president Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club (AP&SC) is looking forward to holding its 76th Annual General Meeting, July 11, at the clubrooms at Korunye, as many members will be rewarded for their contribution to the club over the years. We expect our Patron Gold Medal winning Paralympian athlete, Libby Kosmala, to be present. The club will have the pleasure of awarding life membership to one of its hardest workers and favourite sons, Peter Hayward, who is still rated in the top 10 in certain shooting disciplines in the state. Peter is well known throughout the Lower North and has also been chairman of the AP&SC as well as previously serving as secretary. Peter has volunteered hundreds of hours of his own time, making infrastructure for the ranges whilst also having been president of the South Australian Revolver and Pistol Association, the state’s major affiliate body for competition shooting. The club is lucky to boast an Olympian as one of its 13 life members in Mike Papps, from the famous Papps family. Leo Papps was one of the clubs’ early chairmen, and the Papps name has been synonymous with the Target Pistol Shooting sport in Australia. Recognition of individuals who have been members of the club for 40 and 50 years is also on the agenda. Two major events are up-coming in the next few months, the Action Pistol National Championships for SARPA (South Australian Pistol and Revolver Association) in October, as well as the Action pistol National Championships for Sporting Shooters Association Australia. Both of these events will attract interstate competitors to the club and the region, with local tours of the area planned after the events. The club also enjoyed an intra club social event last Saturday, starting with a social shooting competition in several disciplines, followed by a barbeque and campfire. For further information on the club, its membership and upcoming events check out our website-www.apsc.org.au or email the club’s secretary on secretary@apsc.org.au.

In which town did Ned Kelly have his last stand? What continent can the world’s largest desert be found on? If you know the answers to these questions, you would have fared well at the quiz night held by The Two Wells Football & Netball Sporting Club on Saturday June 13. One hundred and twenty people were in attendance, and teams of six collectively answered various rounds of questions, all vying for top spot on the leader board that was continuously updated throughout the evening. The social committee ran a successful night that was enjoyed by all, and was appreciated for the professional way in which the quiz was run. Age was no discrimination on the night with teams of young and old going head to head. Robert and Jayne Polito, from the Willaston Football Club, volunteered their time and expertise to run the competition, from devising the questions, marking the answers, and tallying the results, delivering all this with a dose of good humour. Laughter, conversation, and failed attempts at cheating wound up with a final round of identifying song lyrics, and saw the Abdilla team “Love Struck” take out first place.
