Eddie wins blue ribbon One of Two Wells’ own is making a name for himself interstate. He’s tall, he’s cute and he’s of the four-legged and soft fleece variety. Eddie the alpaca, or more formerly Pacapark Edward James, recently starred at the Alpacafest Show held in Hamilton, Victoria where he won a blue ribbon for his fleece. For hobby alpaca breeders Bev and John Smith-Trim, Eddie’s success is exciting news. Eddie won the section for Junior Males aged 6 - 12 months in the colours of grey or roan. In the alpaca world colour is important. So too is fleece quality. Most alpacas generally have one or the other but Eddie has been blessed with both, making him a prize for the new breeding program he has recently joined in Geelong.

Bec O’Brien reports: “Eddie was actually bought just for his colouring,” Bev explained. “The new owner, when he saw him, said he thought his fleece was just lovely and a high quality, and then he won a blue ribbon at the show so that just topped it off. “I thought he was cute when he was first born and this is just very exciting for us.” Following his success at the Alpacafest, Eddie also won a blue ribbon at the Ballarat Show on July 26. Bev says her small herd of alpacas could produce up to eight babies next March or April, many of which she is confident will be snapped up by eager buyers looking for that wonderful combination of colour and quality.

Motorists will have to wait a little longer before they can use the new Baker Road Ford bridge as works are still being carried out. District Council of Mallala had hoped to open the popular thoroughfare by the end of last month but engineering issues encountered during construction have put back the project’s completion date to late September. DCM depot operations coordinator, Keith Earl, who is managing the upgrade, says the new 2.6-metre high bridge will likely see the ford only closed once every one to two years when completed. “In the past it has sometimes been closed for up to four months,” Mr Earl explained. “This upgrade will mean that the crossing is safer, you can see cars on approach and departure, and it will also include a footpath for pedestrians and cyclists.” The project is being funded by the State Government Black Spot program (around $280,000), DCM ($132,000) and City of Playford ($69,500).

In other council news, the Lewiston playground project is almost complete. A new shade sail has been installed over the play equipment, which council hopes will encourage the community to utilise the facility all year round. The next stage of the project is to plant the area around the playground and bbq station with vegetation and to construct a weaving rubble bike and walking trail on the northern end of the playground. It is hoped this new path will link into the paved areas already established and promote a user-friendly and active play space for all to enjoy.

Battery drive jump-starts club Bec O’Brien reports: Still in its infancy, the Two Wells Lions Club is not letting that hold it back and is keen to dig in and raise funds for the community. This month the group will be staging a battery drive, with funds raised going toward an as yet-to-benamed project. Club president, Rodney Mildred, said anyone who wished to donate an old battery could drop it off at Lange’s Auto in Two Wells from August 9 until the end of the month. Alternatively, Lions Club members will pick up any unwanted batteries, just give Rodney a call on 0418 856 883. The group has already received one sizeable donation – a one-tonne battery kindly offered by local business Days Eggs. n RIGHT: Two Wells Lions Club president, Rodney Mildred.

Schools helping to make Australia greener

Virginia Primary School took part in schools tree day as part of National Tree Day activities last month. Pictured are Year 2 students Angus and Imogen, who loved digging in and getting their hands dirty to help plant some trees at the preschool.

WHEREVER YOU ARE, WE’LL KEEP YOU IN TOUCH

National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree planting and nature care event, with over hundreds of thousands of people taking part at more than 2500 sites across the country last month. Joining them were thousands of students and teachers nationwide, who escaped the classroom for Schools Tree Day on Friday July 24, got their hands dirty and helped to celebrate 20 years of planting trees for the much-loved event. Each year, approximately 280,000 students take part in Schools Tree Day, when students learn how to plant and care for the seedlings they grow. According to National Tree Day manager Debbie Agnew, Schools Tree Day often marks the beginning of a long-term environmental program, engaging students in a fun, hands-on activity that can reinforce their environmental, maths, science and creative arts learning or simply contribute to creating beautiful school grounds and learning areas. “This year we are celebrating 20 years of greening the places where Aussie kids grow with students and teachers across the country,” Ms Agnew said. “Schools Tree Day is an important tradition to celebrate as it has for so long focused on the health and wellbeing of

kids as well as the environment.” This year the National Tree Day theme of “You Can Grow So Much”, focused on the wealth of opportunities engaging with nature brings to individuals, communities and the environment, and schools didn’t necessarily have to plant trees to take part in the event, Students and teachers were also encouraged to grow a vegetable garden, weed a previously planted area, add shrubs to the building surrounds or venture out to the local bush to lend community groups a helping hand. Since Planet Ark launched National Tree Day in 1996, more than 3.5 million participants have planted over 21 million native trees, shrubs and grasses. “The fact that we’re able to continue growing our community and increase participation every year is testament to those who get involved,” Ms Agnew said. “It means more and more people are understanding just how valuable preserving our natural environment is.” At Virginia Primary School students were involved in planting trees in the preschool yard and adding new seedlings to their ever-growing kitchen garden area.

Tips galore as crowd gets dirty with Milton “Gardening is easy!” “There’s just little things you need to know”, stated Milton Vadoulis of Vadoulis Garden Centre. A strong crowd of approximately 90 avid gardeners attended the Two Wells Community Bowling Club last Tuesday to hear Milton share some garden industry secrets. This latest author event held by the Two Wells Library, was a very busy turnout, with guests enjoying Milton’s energetic and enthusiastic approach to getting people to garden well. Milton has a regular television show on Channel 44, ‘Get Dirty with Milton’, and also appears on community radio, answering gardening questions from the local community. He said the number one question he gets asked on

Natalie Centenera Reports: radio “week after week after week”, is how to properly grow a lemon tree. Lemon trees, like all citrus trees, are sub-tropical in origin and should be planted out in Spring, “September to October is the premium planting time for citrus”, he said. They also, “hate the wind”, he continued, and should not be mulched. They are “gross feeding plants, they like lots of food.” “But not a lot of food at once.” Milton also gave advice on watering and feeding plants. General rules for watering pot plants are based on the temperature. If the weather is in its teens,

water the plant once a week; in the 20’s, twice a week; in the 30’s, three times a week, and if the temperature is above 34 degrees, water the plant every day. He also referred to leaves on trees and hedges as “solar panels”, and explained that if the solar panels do not get enough sunlight, the plant will die, which is why hedges should be pruned like a pyramid, wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. Handy advice was also imparted on “how to grow the best tomatoes……in a pot!”. Ooohs and aahs escaped from the audience as Milton explained one of his “secrets.” When you buy a plant, about 6 inches high, “plant the tomato plant at the bottom of the pot; when it grows, cover

it a little bit.” Keep doing this, completely covering the stem. “It forces the roots out.” DCM mayor, Duncan Kennington, thanked Milton and confessed “I’m just trying to think what I do right in the garden”. Lucky door prizes were drawn, and great excitement was shown by the winners. Afternoon tea was enjoyed and locals chatted with Milton afterwards and questioned him about their own gardening issues. The event was a thorough success. Audience member Margaret Marshman commented afterwards “gardening is a hobby for most people, this was very good.” Two Wells Echo, August, 2015

Book fair comes to Angle Vale Primary Angle Vale Primary School students have been busily sorting through their favourite authors and titles at the book fair that has been temporarily set up in the school library. “This is a great opportunity for students to purchase their chosen books and further develop their reading,” said teacher/librarian, Alex Stokoe. “Buying these books helps to support the library to buy new resources.” Teachers and library staff are already planning for Book Week which takes place in week seven of this term. This year ’s theme is ‘Books light up our World’, and staff are excited to transform the library space into something spe-

The school is also preparing for a ‘Celebration of Learning’, Literacy and Numeracy Open Day, which is being held on Friday August 14, 9am to 12 noon. This will be a ‘No Pens Day’, where students put down their pens and pick up their language! Visitors are invited to have a walk around all of the school’s spaces and any of the classrooms, and see a lesson in action. The Angle Vale Playgroup which is run by, and held at the school, has also been very busy. It has become so popular that a second session has been introduced. Mondays at 9am, and 11am for babies. n 6% rate rise n Strategic reviews, and at District Council of Mallala it’s…

Full steam ahead

District Council of Mallala endorsed its 2015/16 budget and business plan at its July 20 meeting, with rates rising by six percent and $250,000 set aside to move council’s administration to Two Wells this financial year. DCM chief executive officer, Katrina Marton, said council could now get on with the business of actioning its plans, move forward and look to the future. “We’ve got our budget done and now we’ve really got to show some action and for me that’s the really exciting time,” Ms Marton said. “It’s moving toward the future. “Now we can start the cycle of the new strategic plan. “We can get on with business now and that’s what we want to do.” Ms Marton said the projected move of council’s administration from Mallala to Two Wells would be done in a staged approach and importantly presented an opportunity for residents to have a say in what happened to council’s buildings in Mallala.

“At the end of the day the largest part of the organisation is still there (in Mallala),” she said, referring to council’s depot, which only recently underwent a million dollar renovation, and the staff who work there. “Now the community has to decide what to do with our buildings in Mallala. “For me this could be a really important and fruitful engagement with the community about what it wants to do with community buildings in Mallala. “I see that as a good thing for the community to be engaged with. “We’ve got some useful buildings in the centre of town, let’s figure out something useful and fantastic to do with them. “This could be a really engaging piece of public consultation.” The endorsement of council’s 2015/16 budget and annual business plan also saw council keep its Fixed Charge at $100 and the Waste Service Charge at $180 for each property within the designated three-bin service area.

Bec O’Brien reports:

Other major budget items for this financial year include: $500,000 contribution for the Old Port Wakefield Road Roundabout $100,000 for a review of plans for a permanent Civic Centre in Two Wells $75,000 for a review of Strategic and Corporate Plans and Structures $24,000 Water Projects Consultancy $15,000 Strategic IT review $15,000 Wasleys Bridge Engineering Report/Recommendation $20,000 for a Two Wells Stormwater Management Plan Rates are set to increase by 4.7 percent plus 1.3 percent for growth, providing a total increase in rates of six percent overall. The $250,000 set aside to fund the temporary relocation of council’s administration to Two Wells comes under its plant and machinery budget. It’s a move DCM mayor, Duncan

Kennington, says was inevitable and one that will foster faith from residents in council’s commitment to the development of the Two Wells township. “Such a move has many logistical considerations, but most importantly the plans will be the subject of thorough community consultation,” Mayor Kennington said. Mayor Kennington said council had considered a number of plans over the years to relocate to Two Wells, but nothing had progressed and the costs had been considered too prohibitive. “By moving into temporary, but fit for purpose, accommodation, which will be installed behind council’s existing offices in Two Wells, we can afford the initial move, and once on site, we will review all previous plans and designs for civic accommodation,” he explained. “The temporary offices will be re-saleable or re-deployable assets for council. “The move is important because conditions in the Mallala offices are

unsatisfactory for staff and the CEO is physically separated from the staff. “Further, both operationally and symbolically council needs to progress its inevitable move to Two Wells, and this will be an important indicator to the community of council’s belief in its future and the Two Wells township development.” Mayor Kennington added this year’s budget was consistent with the long-term financial plan of council and as such “keeps DCM on track financially”. This year will also see council review its Long Term Financial Plan and develop a new Strategic Plan for 2016-2020, which will inform the next four years’ annual business plans and budgets. It is a process Ms Marton is keen to engage with residents about. “We will have some important engagement with the community this year and we really want the community to be involved,” she said. “So watch this space, we will be putting information out there and we want to hear from the public.”

So much more than just books at your library Two Wells Public Library librarian, Amanda Kirvan, has been busy reading the short list of the children’s book awards that are released each April. Amanda tries to read “a few at least” she said, to be able to offer feedback to young readers who come into the library to borrow. But the local library isn’t just about books! From August 1, Zinio Digital Magazines, will be introduced. Zinio Digital Magazines are full cover-to-cover enhanced digital editions of over 200 popular magazines,

Natalie Centenera reports: such as; Australian Good Taste, Australian Women’s Weekly, Inside Sport, Rolling Stone and Vogue. This service allows the magazine of your choice to be available to download straight onto desktop computers, laptops, iPads, iPhones, and android powered devices. E-books are also available to download from the on-line service of the library, straight to an ipad, Kibo or e-reader. If you would like to access these

services, drop into the library and speak to one of the staff members. The library staff also recently ran a successful school holiday program. An informative and enjoyable program is organised for children each school holidays, where they are able to engage with subjects and activities that they may not usually have access to. Workshops being held in the October school holidays have already been organised and include a weird science and musical workshop. Author and guest speaker events are often held at the Two Wells

Bowling Club too. This month local garden guru and TV personality Milton Vadoulis was able to entertain and impart some great gardening advice to those lucky enough to gain a ticket. Although the events are a free service, they are extremely popular and bookings are essential. Excitingly for the library patrons, TWPL customer and library services coordinator, Anne Sawtell, has organised an ‘Antiques Roadshow’ type of afternoon, which will also be held at the bowling club on September 29.

Antique expert, Paul Bartlett, will attend and advise residents on whether or not their treasured heirlooms are the real deal. “We are always looking for new ideas to build our service in the community,” Amanda said, adding the library staff is looking at the possibility of introducing a home service to those who are unable to make it into the library, whether it be the elderly, sick or injured. For more information on any of the events or services offered by the library, simply drop in or call 8520 2100.

Dame Roma led the way Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that has been read by the group the previous month. The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library. ‘Roma the First: A biography of Dame Roma Mitchell’, by Susan Magarey and Kerry Round. The life story of Dame Roma Flinders Mitchell is an amazing account of a woman who broke through entrenched gender barriers to achieve extraordinary positions of repute within a conservative, male dominated society. Roma Mitchell was the first Australian woman to be a judge, a Queen’s Counsel, a chancellor of an Australian university and the governor of an Australian state. Authors Susan Magarey and Kerrie Round say, “the central and most important dimension of her life was the way in which she enacted a new mode of living for women, a new, modern form of womanhood, and the ways in which she sought to expand the horizons of possibility for other women”. Although she was not a publicly

outspoken crusader of feminism, having been referred to as a ‘conservative feminist’, her tireless work to achieve equality for women commanded a great deal of respect and paved the way for those that followed in her footsteps. Born in 1913 and passing in 2000, her long and accomplished life spanned the majority of the 20th century, and local and international issues and events are weaved throughout the biography as they impacted on her own experiences. The book was very interesting, however, all book club members found it a tedious read, as there was so much information, facts, figures and dates, that it read like a university text book. The chronological approach would make it an excellent resource for many uses, such as a history of Adelaide society, and law in South Australia, during the last century. All agreed that the life of Dame Roma Mitchell was quite remarkable and each member was glad to become more acquainted with her personal as well as professional achievements, although a more readable account would have been more enjoyable.

“You never work a puppet, you ‘play’ a puppet” Sue Harris of Sue Harris Puppets told the children at the Two Wells Library school holiday event, “just like a musician plays an instrument”. Twenty children of all ages enjoyed the puppet making workshop by Sue on Tuesday July 14. Sue has been a puppeteer for many years, and kept the children mesmerised with her short play and hands on activities.

“Anything can be a puppet”, she said as she animated a pair of old shoes that she slipped on her hands. The workshop for the day focussed on China, with Sue performing a Chinese story puppet play in her portable puppet theatre. Colourful hand puppets recreated an old Chinese fisherman tale, with simple actions, music and no dialogue at all. Children were then able to step

into a lion dance costume that Sue had brought along and stamp around, just as they do at Chinese New Year celebrations. Crane and Turtle shadow puppets were hand crafted by the children as Sue demonstrated how to play the puppets behind a screen to produce a story. Creativity and imagination came to life as parents, grandparents and children all enjoyed the fun and informative afternoon.

Ageing Expo comes to town “You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred,” Woody Allen once said. Why do retirees smile all the time? Because they can’t hear a word you’re saying! Of course I am joking! Just because you’re getting older, doesn’t mean you have to be old!

However if you don’t want to grow old disgracefully (as is the motto of the Ulysses motorcycle group,) the Two Wells “Ageing in Style” expo is more for you. The free event will be held on Thursday, August 13 from 10am to 1pm in the Community Centre. There will be stalls, information and demonstrations, along with a free Devonshire tea. Yum!

And just like in the Wizard of Oz, there is a yellow brick road to follow which could lead you to the Fountain of Youth! Well, maybe not, but you might win a prize! Anyway, if you need further information, or would like to go but require transport, please phone Lynette Seccafien on 8527 0200. Two Wells Echo, August, 2015

Take the flu seriously Special Report: Natalie Centenera This year’s winter had been predicted to be drier and milder than usual as the effects of El Nino began to settle. This welcome news did little to soften the bite of the recent cold snaps that have swept through south eastern Australia, Adelaide experiencing its coldest start to winter since 1986. And it is seemingly staying cold, with all of us breathing out ‘dragon’s smoke’ on bitter wintry mornings as we set off to start the day. With cold winters, come illnesses and time off school and work, the man-flu knocking usually robust men off their feet, and children boasting extended absences from class. Dr Herath from Two Wells Medical centre reminds us that it’s not just this particular winter that is cold, “we tend to forget”, that each winter is cold and brings along certain viruses. Dr Herath has been at the centre for three years now and admits during winter there are many viruses that circulate ranging from moderate to severe, some leading to bronchitis and pneumonia. Registered nurse, Sandra Salagarus, from the Two Wells Medical Clinic commented some people don’t take the flu seriously enough. “Some patients have been in intensive care with severe pneumonia this year, more so than other years,” Sandra said. Public health information indicates the flu-virus circulated earlier this year is predominantly Influenza Type B. “This usually happens when we have wet winters”, Sandra explained. “The season broke early, and there are so many more viruses that are ‘shared’ as there is so much overseas and interstate travel.”

Greg Syzmaniak, with his daughter Kasia, who has returned to school after suffering a nasty virus that saw her hospitalised. Eight-year-old Lewiston resident, Kasia Szymaniak, was very unwell for two weeks resulting in that time away from school and hospitalisation. Mum, Samara, said Kasia’s initial acute symptoms were fever with rigors, some hallucinations and disorientation. “The emergency department doctors at Lyell McEwin believe it was a febrile convulsion, lethargy, poor appetite and abdominal pain,” Samara said. “The acute symptoms resolved after about seven days but she had ongoing fatigue for about two weeks.

“Her sickness was labelled as ‘viral of unknown cause’ as she experienced ongoing fever with no identifiable causes such as gastro, flu, cough or cold.” Kasia is back at school after her ordeal and is enjoying her classes and basketball again, but her experience does make us aware that we need to take this winter, and what it is unravelling, very seriously. To properly protect ourselves, especially young children and the elderly, Sandra reminds us vaccines are still available and are free to pregnant women and those with a medical condition.

“The flu season peaks around October, not just winter”, she explained. “ Yo u n g c h i l d r e n are more susceptible to croup, so keep them out of the cold weather and see your doctor for management if needed.” Common sense to treat the common cold with measures such as rest, fluids and paracetamol are the first steps to take when you feel under the weather. Dr Herath stressed the fact with most patients antibiotics don’t work. “See the doctor if there is no improvement after three days, this is particularly important for children,” he advised. “And do not go to the doctor with the pre-conceived idea that antibiotics should be prescribed, let the doctor decide.” “If you are returning from overseas, watch for high fever”, he added, explaining that at this time of year many people holiday in warmer climates, and there is Dengue Fever in Bali, which people must be alert to, but not alarmed by, with most people suffering from stomach bugs after an overseas sojourn.

Tips to remember in the flu season Wash, Wipe, Cover! Don’t infect another. Wash hands, wipe down surfaces and cover your coughs and sneezes. Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your arm, not your hands! See your doctor about immunisation. Stay at home if you are sick and keep your distance from others. When feeling sick- rest, eat what you can and drink plenty of fluids. Paracetamol and aspirin can be taken to relieve headache, muscle pain and reduce fever. See your doctor if: You have a poor intake of fluids, are vomiting, have an intense headache, have difficulty breathing, a high fever that does not improve with paracetamol or there is no improvement in 48 hours, and if you have an underlying medical condition.

Enrol your youngsters for fun now n By Michelle Dimasi The children at Two Wells Community Children’s Centre have been very excited taking various walks to the adjacent school and utilising the playground and oval there. On Wednesday July 29 they walked to the Two Wells Public Library where Di Henwood read them stories. The kids loved the story and were really engaged by the experience. The centre is holding a Book Fair from Monday August 10 until Friday August 16, and we will be sending out Fathers Day Raffle tickets soon. There are some great prizes to be won including a two-night cabin stay at Strathalbyn Caravan Park, a 1-hour flight over the Barossa, and much more! Also, it’s time to start thinking about Kindy enrolments for 2016. If your child’s birthdate is from 1st May 2011 until 30th April 2012 they are entitled to attend our DECD kindy in Term 1 2016. Be sure to contact the centre on 8520 2358 about enrolling or pop in when you get a chance.

This is why the Australian Government should be developing a strategy to combat the growing workforce crisis in aged care. The Abbott Government has announced they will develop a ‘coherent strategy’, unfortunately this announcement was made over a year ago and still there is no sign of it. What the Abbott Government has given to the aged care sector is a $40 million cut to the Aged Care Workforce Development Fund. The Government has a responsibility to produce a plan to deal with the critical shortages of workers in an industry that needs to see a major workforce increase. The needs of our ageing population must be taken seriously and its time leadership is shown from the Abbott Government.

If you have a query in relation to Federal Government matters contact me on 8284 2422 or on www.nickchampion.com.au

echo 10 MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor Duncan Kennington

Students get growing with joint venture On Thursday July 2 DCM CEO Katrina Marton and I met with the principal of Mallala Primary School to discuss a joint venture in helping to green the area. The students will acquire skills in growing trees from collecting the seeds through to planting the subsequent seedlings. The community will gain hundreds of trees per year. Similar discussions have been had with the Two Wells Primary School. On Wednesday July 8, I attended a conference organised by PIRSA to explore issues relating to the peri-urban councils ( Mallala, Light, Gawler, & Barossa). A common theme across the board was the interest in water supply. We have a particular interest for the potential expansion of horticulture across the district. Consequently a meeting just focusing on water will occur shortly. Last year I attended the Two Wells Ageing in Style Expo. It was a great success and this years’ is coming up on Thursday August 13 from 10am - 1pm. It will occur at the Two Wells Community Centre in Two Wells and will feature demonstrations, a Yellow Brick Road-type activity and of course a free Devonshire tea. By the time of printing I’ll have attended the Bird Sanctuary collective launch at the Adelaide Zoo. We are fortunate to be a part of the International Bird Sanctuary, which will not only put us on the international map for bird and environment protection and enhancement; but also put us on the international tourism map. Last month I attended the youth bus in Dublin. It’s a great chance for youths to meet and have confidential discussions with the regional youth bus coordinator, if required. I have been surprised at how comfortable and spacious the inside of the bus is. Also the painting of the bus has made it look new and contemporary, disguising the true vintage. The upcoming dates for the bus are: 5th August 2pm-6pm @ Two Wells Main Street 6th August 2pm-6pm @ Mallala oval 7th August 2pm-6pm @ Dublin oval On Wednesday June 17 a community consultation on the Two Wells DPA was held. Two sessions were held: one geared towards business owners and the other geared towards current and potential residents. The sessions were well attended and constructive conversations were held.

Holiday fun with a message Career advice, support programs, local community groups and holiday fun were all on offer at the Youth Open Day held in Two Wells last month. Set up in the Two Wells Uniting Church parking lot on Wednesday July 8 the event showcased a variety of service providers for young people and featured stalls from NACYS

(Northern Area Community and Youth Services), Anglicare, Two Wells Public Library, Two Wells Blue Light group as well as Centrelink and was supported by the District Council of Mallala and the Two Wells Uniting Church. The popular Regional Youth Bus was also in attendance, keeping the kids entertained,

as did Anglicare’s PHAMS (personal helpers and mentors) program care support worker and aerosol artist, Robyn Hall. Robyn showcased her skills in aerosol painting and also runs a variety of workshops for young people, targeting youths 16 years and up, in Gawler. Some of the issues covered include bullying and friend-

ships, with counseling and journal workshops also on offer. Contact 8522 8105 if you would like more information about the PHAMS program and the workshops on offer. This program will now also be running from the Two Wells Old Council chambers starting on August 4 from 12 noon until 4pm on a fortnightly basis.

By Carly Heaslip Playgroup Coordinator Two Wells Playgroup has received a grant from the District Council of Mallala Community Partnership Funding to assist with the relocation of Two Wells Playgroup to the Two Wells Primary School Hall. We have purchased two Cozy Coupe cars, two couches, art smocks and we have a change table on its way. Our new couches provide a place for mums to feed babies, a great place to sit and read with children, or to sit and have a cuppa with other mums, dads and carers. The children have been enjoying the Cozy Coupe cars and are loving the pretend play experiences they create. We do lots of messy play such as painting and gluing activities so our new art smocks will be very handy! Playgroup is a group of mums, dads and carers who meet together with their children aged 0-5 for interaction, fun and opportunities to learn through play. Playgroup provides a range of toys and activities often not available at home. Playgroup also creates friendships and support networks for families/carers. Two Wells Playgroup meet each Tuesday of the school term at the Two Wells Primary School hall at 9.30am. For more information please see our Facebook page TwoWellsPlaygroup\ facebook.com or contact Carly on 0418 803 761.

All proceeds go towards World Vision, the Adelaide Zoo and the schools’ Zimbabwean sponsor child through World Vision, Trymore Gomo. The night was a great success with over 100 people attended the evening, and through several games, ticket sales, raffles and a silent auction, several thousand dollars was raised. The support from the community was outstanding, including the enormous level of generosity displayed by local flower grower, Jim Varvaricos from Jetts Flowers.

Food celebrated at Virginia Primary

Two Wells, Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group With Mark Webb At the recent Environmental Management Advisory Committee (EMAC) meeting it was suggested we investigate the opportunity to place interpretive signage around some of our reserves to inform the wider community of the types of animals and plants that can be seen within these areas. I have seen a couple of flocks of Zebra finches; Wood ducks etc just to name a few. These birds are just one example of the species of native birds that live within some of our reserves. There are some native birds that have limited nesting opportunities due to extensive clearing of our old native trees; these old trees have hollows that our local parrots would have used. My friend built me a nest box as a Christmas present and I have placed it in one of my largest eucalyptus (gum) trees. Over the last couple of weeks I have seen a pair of Rosellas checking out the nest box. You may have noticed that many bird species are collecting material to build their nests and if you have the right resources food, shelter and water you may be lucky enough to have some birds build a nest near you. I believe if we recognize and know about what animals/plants are within our regions reserves then I hope people will value our wildlife. I have seen many native animals dead on the side of our roads, as I’m sure you have too, especially around areas where old native trees still remain. These trees offer hollows for possums and Goanna’s to live. As a consequence of the high fatality rate of animals around these areas it has been suggested that animal signs be erected to raise awareness that certain animals may be on the road and caution should be taken to avoid hitting these animals with motor vehicles. I have noticed many of these types of signs in other council areas. One that comes to mind is near the elderly centre in Gawler as you cross over the Gawler River there signage indicates that ducks may be crossing the road. I believe that these signs symbolize these communities value their wildlife. Also at (EMAC) meeting we discussed the Significant Roadside Vegetation Marker System Project. The aim of this project is to promote and protect indigenous (original) native vegetation along our roadsides. Council is responsible for the care and control of roadsides, including vegetation, under the Local Government Act 1999 and Indigenous roadside vegetation is protected under the Native Vegetation Act 1991. One way of protecting these areas is to locate and mark these areas so council can ensure that they are protected into the future. You can help support these efforts by letting council know if you are aware of any locations of indigenous native vegetation that exists along our roadsides. Mallala has only three percent of the original vegetation remaining, with half of this found on the roadside. We live in a pretty unique environment so let’s protect what we have left, because when our fauna and flora are gone it is gone forever and how can we tell our children that these animals and plants once lived in our region but we didn’t value them?

Year 7 student Dante and Year 6 student Betty tuck into a Greek lamb yiros as part of National Canteen Week celebrations last week.

Delighted to be a part of the show was young Samuel Scott.

It was multiculturalism in a lunch box at Virginia Primary School last month as the school celebrated National Canteen Week. The week has been organised by the Australian School Canteen Association (ASCA) to recognise and thank the staff and volunteers who make school canteens across the country run smoothly and efficiently. Some schools have run competitions, had themed days and trialled new menu ideas. At Virginia Primary School students were treated to a different food from a different nationality for each day of the week. School canteen manager Karen McKeon said on offer was an Australian sausage sizzle, curry and bread from Khmer, Greek lamb yiros, Vietnamese fried won tons and Italian penne pasta bake. These cultures represented the five main cultures of students at the school, Karen said, with staff and some students getting into the spirit of the week by dressing up in national costumes. The special menu items sure went down well with the kids too, Karen added.

It’s magic! How did he..? Where did it…? Hang on a minute. That’s not possible. More than one person was left scratching their head following an interactive and magical performance in Two Wells during the school holidays. Magician George Stas of Adelaide Magic had the 20 or so school children, and their carers, captivated on Tuesday July 7 as he made things

appear and disappear, shrink and grow bigger, even move places. At one stage he cleverly pulled a burger and chips from out of a 2D menu! Organised by the Two Wells Public Library, the show is part of a broader objective to provide light entertainment and handson learning opportunities for school aged children in the district. George kept the kids, and adults alike, guessing throughout his hour-long show and asked for volunteers often to help him with his act. Next school holidays the library has organised a “create your own musical instrument” session for September 29 and a hands on fun science show for October 7. So kids, mark these dates in your diary and stay posted for more information soon.

Two Wells Primary School wrapped up Term 2 with its popular Grandparents Day celebration on Friday July 3. Family members, relatives, friends and of course many grandparents converged on the school to participate in the day, which involved concert items from students, visits to classrooms by guests and a delicious morning tea and sausage sizzle. LEFT: Enjoying Grandparents Day at TWPS last month were Chloe Slatter and Riley Holloway and their greataunt Carolyn Graham of Paralowie.

ARE YOU In the food business?

Lower Light Lower Light’s iconic scrap metal sculpture, the Tin Man, is in the process of being rebuilt after blowing down earlier in the year but he needs your help. Despite the project being funded by wellknown “Cossie” of South Aussie with Cossie fame, local resident and Dublin ward councillor, Terry Keen, says only recycled materials can be used and the small group of skilled locals are having a bit of trouble sourcing some items, in particular clean

10x20 litre steel drums. If you have some you can donate or can help out in any way give Terry a call on 0407 971 022. Dublin Ian Telfer of the History Group needs your help! He is looking for any photos or memorabilia of the two old wells in the town. Drovers moving stock used to stop at the “wells” many years ago, and apparently the Light Horse brigade used to camp there when they were training.

Most people love a good sausage roll, and Two Wells local Rae Wilson has a ripper of a recipe. Filled with some hidden veggies these yummy savoury treats are a popular choice for Rae’s husband Malcolm to take to work, are easy to pack and take on a picnic and are a hit with the grandchildren. Flaky pastry on the outside, delicious flavours on the inside, what more could you want? Rae suggests making the mixture the day before you need these sausage rolls as it allows the flavours to filter right through the mixture. Enjoy them while they are hot or serve them cold, either way they are too tasty to stay around for long. Why not give them a try for your next family gathering, birthday party or as a quick Friday night tea? Ingredients 500g beef sausage meat 1 cup soft breadcrumbs 2 eggs (one for brushing the pastry before cooking) 1 medium brown onion chopped finely

many years ago. Folklore says there was a storm going through the town, and even though the chapel was partly demolished back then, the girl sheltered in it. To this day, her ghost is reported to revisit the children’s room at night of the house that is now erected on the chapel’s former site. Scary! Anyway, if you, or anyone you know, have any old photos, documents or stories of either of these chapels, please contact Pat on 8529 2028.

1 small zucchini or 1 cup grated pumpkin 1 large carrot grated 3 sheets puff pastry method Mix all ingredients together (except for 1 egg and pastry sheets). Shape mixture into lines along the length of the pastry sheets and cut down the middle. Brush sides of pastry with lightly beaten egg and roll over mixture. Cut into desired lengths, prick pastry with a fork and brush tops with more egg. Bake in oven for about 15 minutes at 200 degrees (fan forced), then reduce heat to 150 degrees and bake for another 30 minutes.

Fundraising BBQs

If you’re a local community group and you are looking to raise some funds Two Wells Prime Meats is keen to help you out. The main street business is offering to supply free sausages to local sporting and community groups who are willing to run a BBQ out the front of the shop on a Saturday morning. Contact Shana at the shop on 8520 2211 for more information or to book a place.

Marg Slater reports:

Another successful winter bowls tournament was played out under quite chilly conditions last month on the Mallala Bowling Club’s greens. Helen and Peter March hosted the event, which was co-ordinated by Lionel Miller, with 18 teams entering the competition. Winners for the day were the Two Wells team comprising of skipper, Murray Launer, third, Daryl Hall, second, Ian Brown and lead, Colin Hall. Following the games, afternoon tea was presented by the Mallala Bowling Club catering committee, which was enjoyed by those attending. The third round of the Saturday tournaments will again take place on August 15 – all interested teams should advise Lionel Miller on 8529 2423, or fill out the form available during the Wednesday winter bowls session. Wednesday triples games begin at 11.30am for a 12noon start, and for $5 players can play two games of 10 ends. A call for skippers, seconds and leads is then followed by players choosing colourcoded bats to make up the teams. Warm clothing and flat-soled shoes are essential. If you do not have any bowls, the club will provide them for the day.

Report: Adam Bail TWGC secretary Late July saw the biggest day on the club’s calendar, the Men’s Open Day take place with multiple Open Day Champion Chris ‘Doc’ Girling taking home the major prize. The day was a terrific day for the club with 33 players from our club and other clubs around the mid north and surrounding areas participating in a fabulous day’s golf and competing for some great prizes. It was great to see that Two Wells players took home all of the major prizes including the A, B and C Grade Championships. Thank you to our Open Day sponsors without which it wouldn’t be possible to provide such fabulous prizes. Additionally, a big thank you has to go out to all of the committee and members for their efforts in preparing and hosting such a wonderful day. Your efforts are truly appreciated. This month also culminated in the conclusion of the Club Championships. This year saw Stuart Grigg show his superiority over the rest of the field winning by a comprehensive 16 strokes with four rounds in the seventies. The B Grade Championship saw a close battle being fought out between Ian Clark and the fast finishing James Weir. Ian held on for a very popular victory.

Winners of Two Wells Golf Club’s Men’s Open Day were Steven Kelly (C Grade Open Day Champion), Chris Girling (A Grade Open Day Champion), and Russell Grigg (B Grade Open Day Champion). Congratulations to both champions and all of the players who took part over the four rounds. The Ladies on Tuesdays have continued to have a fun time and some solid golf with a number of ladies having great wins over the month. Also, a big golf clap to Debra Lamont who has put in some fabulous scores of net 66 and 68 and a rather large dent in her handicap over the past weeks. The Stroke portion of Ladies Club Championships has also been decided with the top four progressing to the Matchplay semi-finals. Julie Holland will face off against Elaine Grigg and Kathy Stubing against Debra Lamont in the coming weeks. Good luck girls. If you would like to join us and try and tame our challenging little course and have a great day visit

stars of Fresh 92.7FM’s brekky show “Liam and Ben” dropped into the Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club last month. Ben Harvey, who plays reserves for the club, scored the announcing gig earlier this year and along with Liam Stapleton makes up the fun-loving and cheeky duo. Word has it Liam has an urge to play footy as Ben gets to play, but Liam thinks he should get a run in the A grade as a ruckman. That might be okay, if he wasn’t a little short and his last go at footy was at Auskick more than 10 years ago! As well as running amok on the field dressed in the Rooster mascot outfit (check out the hilarious footage on Facebook!), the pair interviewed A grade coach, Neville “Cheeky” Seccafien about his playing options and coaching strategies.

POKER FACE!

Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club held a poker night on Friday July 3. Around 30 people took part in what was a good fundraiser, with Rodney Mildred taking honours and winning a holiday to Bali in the process. Michael Abdilla, Michael Dimasi and Tonny Schuitt were close behind and won either a poker table, a tablet or gold class movie tickets. The club’s next social event will be a Toga (Greek) night on Saturday August 8.

Cody Murch and Caleb Hagenbucher will represent the state in the Under 12 team in the National Rugby League Championships.

Career kick-start Bec O’Brien reports: Rodney Mildred, James Dimasi and Joe Toth try to keep a straight face. Nathan Rose, Ben Spiteri and Michael Abdilla. Social committee members Rachel Lange, Kate Lange, Sammy Stevenson and Maddy Seccafien.

Two young local lads are about to kick-start their rugby careers, having been selected in the South Australian Under 12 team heading to Darwin this month – and both have never competitively played the game before. Twelve-year-old Cody Murch and 11-year-old Caleb Hagenbucher, students at Two Wells Primary School, have been chosen as part of a 17-member squad heading to the Northern Territory city to take part in the National Rugby League Championships from August 9-15. Both were selected following stellar performances in the school-based Leagues of Legend rugby competition held earlier in the year, and neither have played competitively before. “This is my first big sporting

achievement,” says Caleb, who is excited to be heading interstate and competing against teams from around the country. For Caleb’s mum, Kylie, she couldn’t be more proud, and believes the trip will be a wonderful opportunity. “I think this a great experience for them to have,” she said. “Especially at such a young age.” While Cody is keen to take up rugby more permanently – he hopes to join the Central Districts Roosters club – Caleb is content to enjoy the experience and focus more on another sport he is good at – footy. The pair are currently attending state team training a couple of times a week at Woodville and Brighton and fundraising for the trip. Best of luck boys.

From back page He continued being an important contributor in the League side, culminating in a premiership in 2011, before returning back to play for Two Wells in 2012. The Roosters took out the A grade flag that year, Allmond named best on ground. “I nearly did the full SANFL preseason for 2012 but my dad got crook and couldn’t work, so I came home to play for Two Wells and anything I got paid from the club went towards his medical bills,” Allmond explained. “I got to play with my brother (Lee), who’s 30 or so, so who knows how long he’s got left. “But to win a flag with him and all my mates who I grew up playing footy with was a pretty special thing. “I did find it hard coming back to Two Wells and picking up the different speed of the game, I think it took until half way through the season before I got a best on ground.” He returned to WWT the following season and worked his way back into the senior ranks. “I am proud of it, to make that decision to come back an achieve the 100-game goal,” Allmond said.

“With all the support I’ve had from family and friends, it would seem like a waste of time if I didn’t go back.” His season to date has been stellar, the running leftfooter racking up touches while being used in a range of roles, including across half forward, half back and on the wing. Allmond credits his solid season to a good preseason, where he did some extra running work and dropped eight kilograms through basic changes to his diet. He also follows correct recovery procedures after matches and training. “The body is feeling good, probably the best I’ve felt in four years,” Allmond said. “I see the physio regularly, I have extra ice baths, it all adds up. “I saw the club’s fitness coach about doing up an eating program too, I used to eat a lot of ****.” With 100 games under the belt, Allmond has set his sights on continuing his good form in a strong club. “The reserves are top, the under 18s are going well it’s been good to see blokes like Sam Rowland get a game too, so I’m really enjoying my footy at the moment,” he said.

Former Rooster reaches milestone TWO Wells product, Jarred Allmond, marked a significant milestone on July 18, notching up his 100th League match for Woodville-West Torrens Eagles. It was a great achievement for the 25-yearold, who found his way to the club after coming through the ranks of his local side, the Roosters, starting his footy as a seven-year-old. Allmond was raised in a huge family, one of 12 children, with seven brothers and four sisters. He received an invitation from the Eagles to train with the club’s under 17 squad following a brilliant performance for the Adelaide Plains Football League under 17 team. Allmond made his League debut in 2009, going on to take out the SANFL Rising Star award in his first year, as well as runner up best and fairest to Eagles captain, Mark McKenzie. n Continued page 19

TWO Wells A grade footballer, Lee Allmond, recently played his 200th game.

Allmond, Lange notch up 200 Congratulations to Two Wells Football Club players Lee Allmond and Stephen “Fuzzy” Lange who both played their 200th game for the club on Saturday July 25, Allmond in the A grade and Lange in the Reserves. Allmond started his football days as a junior at the club and has won five A grade Best and Fairest trophies. He has featured in the top three of the association equivalent at least three times and despite offers to go to other clubs, has remained loyal to Two Wells. Allmond played one year for SANFL Woodville-West Torrens’ when he was 17 and was a member of the club’s 2012 A grade premiership side. Lange came to the club as a senior player, having moved to the district from the Yorke Peninsula when he started an apprenticeship. He also played in the club’s 2012 A grade grand final and has won two B grade premierships to boot. Current A grade coach Neville “Cheeky” Seccafien says the lads should be congratulated on their loyalty, longevity and commitment to the club and are an inspiration to those coming through the ranks. STEPHEN Lange notched up 200 games for Two Wells recently.
