GREENWHEAT Freekeh at Dublin on the Adelaide Plains is set to secure South Australia’s position as the leading global supplier of ‘superfood’ freekeh, through a $4.4 million project that will expand its production plant and create 18 new jobs. A $900,000 State Government Regional Development Fund grant is supporting the expansion of the company’s production plant, providing a new viable, sustainable and economic option for grain growers by harvesting and processing green grain into a high value premium product. Greenwheat Freekeh managing director,
Tony Lutfi, said market demand for freekeh currently outweighed supply with the product now recognised as a global leader in the category of superfoods. “Freekeh growth in Australia alone has exceeded 220 per cent a year in the last three years,” Mr Lufti said. “As the only commercial producer of clean freekeh in Australia, this expansion will enable us to increase our production capacity from 450 tonnes per year in 2014/15 to nearly 2000 tonnes in the first year of operation and 3600 tonnes per year by 2018/19. n Continues page 5.

DPTI representative Cristina Canatselis, Leesa Vlahos representative Hannah Russel, Councillor Joe Danielle, Councillor Tom Sommerton, Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty, DCM Mayor Duncan Kennington at the official bridge opening recently.
‘Sigh of relief’ as Baker Road ford again open to motorists After months of closure for a much needed upgrade, the Baker Road Ford was finally re-opened to the public on Thursday, September 24. After the appropriate funding was sourced from the State Government through the Black Spot program and contributions from both DCM and Playford Councils, the road has been raised with a new span-deck bridge installed. Mayor Duncan Kennington breathed a sigh of relief at the official opening of the Baker Road Ford, which was held at the Two Wells library Friday October 2. “It’s been a long time in the pipeline,” Mr Kennington said. “We finally got significant backing from the State Government, as well as Playford Council. “It is significantly safer now
Natalie Centenera reports: because the road has been lifted up and will flood less often. “In addition to the safety, it’s a major convenience to residents on the Mallala and Playford sides.” The end result of the new ford was a “good example of neighbouring councils working collaboratively for the better outcome for all,” he said. “It’s fantastic to see the opening of Baker Road Ford this week,” said Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty. “It’s been an on again, off again project, and it’s good to see the State Government finally come to the party and contribute funding through the Black Spot program, along with the contributions of Mallala and Playford Councils.”
The process of submitting applications, obtaining grant funding, assessing the appropriate design options and the actual construction, has taken close to three years. Member for Taylor, Leesa Vlahos, who was absent from the official opening due to a prior engagement, was pleased with the final completion of the Baker Road Ford. “I know that the community has been heavily anticipating the reopening of the upgraded crossing, it is something we have been fighting for a couple of years,” Mrs Vlahos said. “We all hope that these upgrades will reduce flooding and improve road safety for the Virginia and Lewiston area. “This is good news for local residents and businesses, as the crossing is a vital part of local infrastructure that reduces travel
times for the community.” Although the project did go over budget by approximately $200,000 from the original estimated cost, DCM councillor Joe Danielle pointed out it was an “asset for the community.” Being a main thoroughfare for residents, farmers and local businesses, Mr Danielle said, “I hope people appreciate that.” The frequent closures due to water over the ford will now be reduced to once every one to two years. A footpath for cyclists and pedestrians is now in place, and vehicles can be seen on approach and departure. In a breakdown of funding the State Government Black Spot program contributed $280,000, City of Playford $69,500 and DCM $132,00, initially with incidental costs due to engineering issues.

Phoebe’s moo-ving show success Bec O’Brien reports: At just 16 years of age, Korunye resident, Phoebe Eckermann, has established her own Limousin cattle stud. This year her heifer Warrawindi Kraving It took out the Junior Champion Limousin Heifer or Cow at the Royal Adelaide Show and so begins what will hopefully be a long and successful cattle breeding career. As a child Phoebe attended the state’s premier show with her family, mum Angie, dad, Peter and brothers Jacob, Calum and Isaac. “I’d always loved the cows when we went to the show,” Phoebe said. “I’d secretly want to go back and spend more time with them.” In Year 7 Phoebe was keen to get involved in the competition side of the events and attended the South Australian Junior Heifer Expo initially as an observer. She took the educational experience in full stride, loving every minute and leaving with an eagerness to learn more and one day show her own cattle . Fast forward three years and this year the young entrepreneur won Junior Champion Limousin Heifer or Cow at the Royal Adelaide Show. It is the first year Phoebe has shown her own cattle and follows success at the 2015 Mt. Pleasant, Mt. Barker, Gawler and Strathalbyn shows. Phoebe’s cattle handling story goes back to her father and papa’s days of showing Berkshire pigs. Dad, Peter, says “showing animals is a family tradition” and despite living in Mawson Lakes at the time, wanted to get Phoebe involved in the animal industry somehow. Following this dream, the family moved to Korunye about six months ago and is looking forward to building up their Limousin cattle numbers on the 55-acre property. Phoebe’s stud name “Aruma” is an Aboriginal word for happy or cheerful and she currently has three cows, three calves and a heifer as stock. A member of the Australian Limousin Breed Society, Phoebe says this particular breed of cattle is nice to handle and can be quite affectionate, each with their own personality. When handling them she says “if you stay calm the animal will stay calm”. Undoubtedly good advice in most situations involving animals. Working in her spare time with the calves at Wilson’s Dairy “Bevan Park”, which is just up the road, is all practise handling cattle for Phoebe.
Phoebe Eckermann being presented with her ribbon for Junior Champion Limousin Heifer or Cow by show steward Barry Vote. Phoebe says cattle handling and breeding is a terrific venture for anyone interested in cattle, with children as young as eight able to enter led cattle classes at shows around the state. “There were just as many girls, if not more, handling cattle at the show this year,” she said. “The people are really nice and I’ve made lots of new friends just from doing this. “I’ve also learnt a lot of new things about myself. “It’s a lot of fun.” Phoebe is currently in Year 10 at Xavier College in Gawler and hopes to study Animal Science at the nearby Roseworthy Agricultural College when she leaves school. This quietly spoken girl definitely has big things ahead. Best of luck Phoebe.

Megan hits the big league Former local girl, Megan Laughton, will line up for the Adelaide Phoenix in the Ladies Gridiron League’s 2015/16 season. Now living close to the city, Megan, 27, who grew up in Two Wells, will run onto the field for the Phoenix on Saturday October 31 as they take on the Brisbane Blaze in the opening game of the season. After following the National Football League (NFL) for about five years, where she supports the New England Patriots, Megan “fell into” gridiron. “I always imagined myself playing American Football too, but there was no opportunity as a woman here in Adelaide to do that,” she said. “One afternoon I was throwing a gridiron football in the local park with my sister, and I was approached by a woman who said she was involved with Adelaide Phoenix. “She asked if I would be going to try out for the team.” The tryouts, which were held in February this year on one of the hottest days imaginable, involved testing speed, strength and agility. Two weeks later she was named a part of a 30-member squad. Megan currently trains twice a week in Woodville, with speed, agility and strength drills, as well as catching, running specific routes, and scrimmage practise all part of the fun. Strength and conditioning training as well as additional training in their own time are also part of the mix. As one of the ‘running backs’ on the team, Megan has four important jobs: receiving a ‘hand off’ from the quarterback and running the ball up the field towards the ‘end zone’; acting as a receiver and catching the ball; pretending to have the ball in special plays to confuse the defence; and finally ‘pass protection’, which means protecting the quarterback from any approaching defensive players. “I enjoy playing running back because it allows me to do what I love; run,” Megan said. “I am one of the smallest women on the team, but my speed, agility and determination allow me to evade defenders and help protect my offensive teammates from being hit. “I have been nicknamed ‘Mighty Mouse’ by some of my team mates because I always bounce back up after a hard hit.” Growing up Megan played netball at school, did Little Athletics in Gawler, and practised Zen Do Kai karate in Two Wells; activities she says helped her develop a competitive drive. Megan is keen to see women’s sport

Bec O’Brien reports: take a higher profile in the wider public, believing it is undervalued and often disadvantaged by people who say it is ‘boring’ or ‘not as entertaining as men’s sport’. She says the Ladies Gridiron League is helping to tackle this issue by establishing a fun and competitive environment that supports the development of females in sport and raises awareness of gridiron in Australia. “What I love about playing for Adelaide Phoenix is the high standard of practise we receive from the coaching staff and the League,” she explained. “We are respected as athletes, we are insured, and we are paid. “Every time I step onto the training field I feel empowered, as if there is nothing I can’t do. “I hope that by representing the state in women’s gridiron I might empower other women to get involved in gridiron, and in sport in general. “The women on this team come in all shapes and sizes, and there is no desired ‘cookie-cutter’ look. “Like all professional sports, the determination to learn and improve is as important as athletic ability.” The Ladies Gridiron League (LGL) is an Australian run and owned league, with teams competing including Adelaide Phoenix, Brisbane Blaze, Canberra Mustangs, Sydney Sirens, Melbourne Maidens, and the West Coast Angels. “It is a fast paced and powerful sport, with plenty of hard hits and tackles,” Megan said. “The best part about this league is it not only promotes professionalism and athleticism, but also teamwork and having fun. “I have made so many friends on this team, and I know that they will be there for me on and off the field. “We treat this sport as if we are going into battle, and because of this close relationship we have with each other I can honestly say these women are my family.” Outside of gridiron, Megan is a fulltime mum to Kate, 3, and lives with her partner, Troy Handley, also a former local. The Ladies Gridiron League’s games will be aired on Foxtel, on the Aurora Channel 183, to a national audience. The season opening game is on Saturday October 31 at 8pm at City Mazda Stadium (57 Milner Road, Richmond SA 5033). Tickets can be bought at www. ticketbo.com, starting at $20.

R/12 enrolments flow in Interest in the proposed school earmarked for Two Wells’ new residential development north of the town has been strong according to the Lutheran Schools Association. LSA deputy director Dr Loyd Fyffe said registrations for the birth to Year 12 school were coming in and the association was excited about the project. The school is expected to be a focal part of the Hickinbotham Group’s Liberty development, which along with the Eden de-
Bec O’Brien reports: velopment, will see more than 2500 homes built to the north and the town’s population more than tripled once completed. “It is an exciting time for the township expansion with the approval of the first stages of the Eden and Liberty developments,” Dr Fyffe said. “The association and the Hickinbotham Group continue to work closely so the school is delivered in a timely way to
meet the needs of the growing community and district. “We understand that site works are expected to start later this year for the development and the association should, in the first half of 2016, be in a position to announce the school’s expected opening date. Dr Fyffe said many local people had provided the association with positive feedback about the proposed school and registrations of interest were strong. He encouraged people to
continue to register their interest. “This information is so helpful to inform and prepare us for future classes and the demand for primary, middle and senior (classes),” he said. “We very much look forward to being part of the Two Wells community and establishing the school, which will be a focal point of Liberty.” People can register their interest for the school at either edentwowells.com.au or libertytwowells.com.au.

Gov funds help fund processing plant expansion
Remembrance Day is fast approaching on
n From page 1. The project would significantly improve the company’s current production of green grain freekeh – a dried cereal-based food originating from Northern Africa, Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East – reinforcing its position as the only company in the world to produce freekeh using specially designed technology. Regional Development Minister, Geoff Brock, said the company’s processing plant – which uses a specially developed process for freekeh production – is currently at full capacity, so the State Government funding will help build a new plant and subsequently create new jobs to process, store, clean, crack, mill and pack freekeh on site. “The project supports the State Government’s economic priorities of ‘Premium food and wine produced in our clean environment and exported to the world’, ‘Growth through innovation’, and ‘South Australia’s small businesses have access to capital and global markets’,” Mr Brock said.

Owls change president as APFL bid draws near
ANGLE Vale Football Club has elected a new president, Trevor Spong who is now at the helm of the Owls following a vote at the club’s AGM in early October. Mr Spong, who was vice president this year, replaced Paul Healey. All senior positions on the club’s committee are declared vacant annually and open for nomination and voting at the AGM. Mr Spong said Mr Healey left the position on amicable terms. “Paul said he was happy to step down and hand the position over to me after I was nominated for the position,” Mr Spong said. “I asked to put it to a vote, so the decision would be a committee decision and not just me taking his job.” While the results of the vote are not public, committee members and those in attendance at the meeting voted Mr Spong into the role. He said the vice presidency was hopefully a “large enough apprenticeship” in taking the senior role of a club with some 400 players across three football departments. Mr Spong had worked with Mr Healey on the
club’s pending affiliation with the Adelaide Plains Football League and declared the change in leadership would not affect that direction for the 2016 season. “As far as we’re concerned, nothing changes, we still intend on pushing forward with the affiliation application. “2016 will be the biggest, busiest year at the club yet.” Mr Spong revealed Angle Vale would be adding an under 15 women’s team to its ranks for the coming season, on top of its under 18 and senior sides. Mr Healey said he was disappointed to not be continuing as president. “There was a lack of commitment there from the committee to help the seniors get things right, so I hope Trevor has the respect and support from the committee to turn that around,” he said. “I wish them all the best to get to where they need to be.” At a meeting late last month, the APFL board voted in favour of accepting the club’s application, contingent on it accepting a list of conditions. Those conditions are yet to be confirmed.

STEVEN GRIFFITHS MP Member for Goyder
Jury out on traffic detour experiment The long weekend trial traffic detour around Port Wakefield has been deemed a success by the Department of Planning, Transport & Infrastructure, with estimates that around 500 vehicles used the alternate route through Lochiel, Balaklava, Mallala and Two Wells on the holiday Monday, October 5. This left relatively smooth travelling through Port Wakefield, which was welcome news, as were media reports of increased trade for businesses along the alternative route. With other factors such as the end of the long weekend coinciding with the middle of school holidays, the jury now awaits the January/March long weekends to pass further judgement. In any case, I will be continuing to push for money to be spent on long term permanent solutions to improve peak holiday travel through Port Wakefield, and the important freight traffic route to Balaklava and Bowmans. Other recent welcome news is Greenwheat Freekeh at Dublin securing a $900,000 grant to expand its production plant, with an estimated 18 new jobs for the Adelaide Plains to be created as a result. I was also pleased Goyder road improvement projects had been funded a collective $2,353,000 from an available $8.8 million in the 2015/16 Rural Road Safety Programs; a great outcome indeed. Less welcome news is it is now a year since the introduction of the new Marine Park Sanctuary Zones and with the anniversary came the release of a much anticipated Regional Impact Assessment Statement. Alas, the data upon which the report is based covers only a fourmonth period; a too narrow timeframe to paint an accurate picture. Last week I reintroduced to Parliament the Marine Parks Amendment Bill to (again) attempt to have 12 of the 83 sanctuary zones converted to habitat protection zones to soften the severe impact being experienced, particularly in small communities such as Port Wakefield. Debate will continue but disappointingly the Minister for Regional Development Geoff Brock has publicly stated he will not support it. Debate has also commenced on the Government’s proposed Planning reforms, introduced in September. This Bill is 207 pages long and warrants much more time for review than Minister Rau is seemingly prepared to give. As the Opposition spokesperson for the Bill I will be debating the proposed legislation at length, and have spent a lot of time with concerned individuals and representatives from community groups, local government and the development industry. Concern has also not abated over the proposed closure of the Repatriation Hospital at Daw Park, and two local icons which adorned Port Wakefield Road for some 18 years – the Tin Man and Ned Kelly -- are back on the job, sporting a fresh coat of paint. New signage reads, “Snelling Have a Heart” and “Repat 4 Sale – Highway Robbery”. With work on the Two Wells township expansion set to commence, I am pleased to be attending the Hickinbotham Group’s launch of “Eden Estate” on 12 November. This is a significant development for the region, with its 236 Rural Living allotments and linear parks and walking paths. In Grants news, there are still some programs open, as we near the end of the year. These include Saluting Their Service, Sport and Recreation Development and Inclusion Program, Rural Research and Development, and Positive Ageing Grants. Argus steals the show
N Our meeting on Tuesday October 13 was a joint meeting with Mallala, Thompsons Beach and Two Wells. We had a great turn out from the community and discussed with the local Police officers issues occurring in the areas. These issues consist of stolen vehicles constantly being driven into the area and either being abandoned or set fire too. Also break-ins and thefts in the area are still occurring so please remain vigilant around the community and report any suspicious behaviour to 131 444 or 000 in emergencies. N We had Senior Constable First Class Nigel Hearnden from Star Dogs in SA Police and his Police dog Argus as guest speaker this month. This presentation was very informative about what police dogs do and how they are trained.
By Lisa Allen
SC1C Hearnden was also a great help for many dog owners, explaining how police dogs are cared for to remain healthy, active and alert, with some of the information people would be able to adopt with their own dogs. N Our next Neighbourhood Watch meeting is Tuesday November 10 at 7.30pm in the Two Wells RSL, Old Port Wakefield Road, Two Wells. We would love to see so many faces again to help keep our community safe and vigilant.

Enjoyable memoir from a familiar face of the 70s
The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library. We hope to provide you with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read. White Cargo: A Memoir by Felicity Kendal Felicity Kendal is the familiar face that appeared in the 1970’s British sitcom, ‘The Good Life’. Her childhood, which was spent in India with her family- a group of travelling thespians, is brought to life in her memoir, ‘White Cargo’. She describes her alternative upbringing in the exotic sub-continent, and how this affected the rest of her life, living and acting in the United Kingdom, after leaving the safe hold of her family at the age of 17. Her family did not want her to leave, her father called her a ‘stupid little buggar’ warning her against an acting career in the UK, ‘they won’t appreciate you in England. You’ll end up marrying the first clot you meet, who will want you to settle down with a bunch of screaming kids. You’ll end up in hell with mortgages and misery! And the climate’s bloody awful.’
She began to put pen to paper whilst sitting by her father’s bedside in Chelsea after he suffered a stroke, and her successful career in the industry, as well as her unconventional upbringing, makes for an interesting read. Most book club members found it to be an enjoyable story, which weaved the past and the present together well. Her father was seen as a ‘ratbag’ and her childhood greatly influenced by his nature. She seems to be a good person and speaks of past relationships and fellow actors with kindness. Although most members would not usually read this type of book, they did find it worthwhile. Next month’s book is ‘The Women in Black’ by Madeleine St John. Two Wells Echo, November, 2015

Star local sewer a global sensation Natalie Centenera reports: “I find it amazing that I sit in my shed in Two Wells and someone is making a doll in Germany from my pattern,” says Suzette Glastonbury Rugolo. Suzette, who had always enjoyed doing lots of craft, picked up a pattern in a magazine to make a doll 17 years ago. One year after her first foray into doll making, she had her own idea, and has been designing her own dolls ever since. “I’ve improved since my first doll,” she giggles, and has since started selling her patterns both within Australia and internationally. She sells well in the United States, being first published in the magazine ‘Soft Dolls and Animals’, doll making being a huge craft in America, and is known as Suzette Glastonbury Von Rugolo in the German magazine ‘Bonami’. “The beauty of doll making is that so many crafts you have learned in your lifetime, like embroidery, knitting and crocheting, can be brought into the dolls,” she remarked. “You can knit a jacket, crochet a pair of trousers or hat, even use scrapbooking stuff.” Doll making is a craft that not many people know about and Suzette has been well sought after to teach her craft all over Australia and New Zealand. With four daughters, six grandchildren, and being a carer to her parents who are now both in their nineties, Suzette has slowed down the amount of dolls she produces for sale, but is still very creative when she does make a doll. “I really don’t like making the same one again”, she says, “I like to get onto the next one, the next design.” Ten years ago Suzette began to hold workshops on doll making. “A lot of people end up with U.F.O.s……unfinished objects”, she says “but after two days in my workshop, they go home with a finished object.” “In my workshops I’m actually a real slave driver,” she laughs. “Everything is already there in the kit, the fabric is cut out, as soon as 9am hits, they sit and sew their little hearts out.” Suzette ran a two day cloth doll workshop in her shed at Two Wells on September 26 and 27 and October 31 and November 1. At the end of the two days you will have a standing white rabbit. All the fabrics are included in the price of $135, and are cut and ready for you to come in and just sit down and sew. If you would like further information, please call Suzette on 0419 005 384 or email her on suzetterugolo@yahoo. com.au. You may also have had a chance to see her work in the Two Wells Public Library, when some of her dolls where on display for the SALA festival.

Busy hands help out those in need
Parishioners from St Paul’s Anglican Church (Two Wells) and St Peter’s Anglican Church (Mallala) as well as members of local craft groups are lending their talents to help those in need. Members of the church, as well as those from Round Table Quilters, The Crafty So and Sews, and also many individuals are contributing to The Quickest Warmth Project. According to priest Prue O’Donovan, quilters, crocheters, knitters, embroiderers and stitchers team up to provide for children who have met with adversity. Prue says The Quickest Warmth Project began when a request was sent to about 40 community service groups in the Gawler area to provide homemade quilts and blankets for those in the community who

Tessa Richmond and Dorothy Edwards working hard on some of the items for The Quickest Warmth Project. had a need for them. After an initial meeting with Families SA, with a few quilts in hand, the project was up and running, and since May this year, more than 100 people around South Australia have become part of the project and contributed in a variety of ways. “There are people of all ages, some are in aged care facilities and retirement villages, church
groups, quilting and craft groups and some who just want to gather from time to time to support others,” Prue explained. “We receive beautiful handmade quilts or knitted or crocheted blankets, handmade children’s clothing, toys, carry bags, bedding, carry bags and books. “Recently there were two large crates of delightful hand-
made items left on the doorstep of St Paul’s Anglican Church Two Wells by an anonymous donor. Thank you.” “As the community seems to increasingly struggle with unemployment, poverty, social, mental and physical issues, this project is a testimony to the generosity and concern of so many people in the community who want to alleviate the suffering of others,” she said. “We have indeed heard a few stories, whereby the gift of a handmade item has made an enormous difference to someone and has improved family relationships in general.” If you would like to know more about The Quickest Warmth Project, donate or become part of the project please contact Prue O’Donovan at prudy@internode. on.net or mobile 0412 387 641. • Advertising Feature

Holiday science class a blast Bec O’Brien reports: Solid. Liquid. Gas. This was the theme of another successful school holiday workshop organised by the Two Wells Public Library in October. Led by Jake Hazel from SciWorld the program on Wednesday October 7 was sciencebased, fun, interactive, educational and hands on. The kids, and parents/carers alike, were enthralled from the start, as Jake introduced the 20 or so young minds to basic chemistry using aspirin, water and a container with a lid. The resulting “pop” of the lid and fizzy mixture was a surprise and a delight and had the crowd laughing. Everybody was soon trying their hand at their own experiment; keen to see what happens when you have vinegar, oil and food colouring in a cup and add bi-carb soda to the mix. Throughout the hour-long session there was much opportunity to learn more about science, with Jake also demonstrating the power of gas and introducing kids to the topic of surface tension with a fun and colourful activity. Each participant also was lucky enough to make some interesting “gloop” which they took home with them. How do you make a musical instrument? Quite easily actually! All you need are recyclable items and some imagination and you can start putting your own band together. Tony from Cool 4 Kids Entertainment and More, visited the Two Wells Library on Tuesday September 29 as part of the Library’s school holiday program. About 20 school aged children attended the musical workshop and were instructed on how to design, build/construct, and then decorate an instrument. A demonstration was given on how to make certain musical sounds using ordinary household items. To Make a Guitar: Take one tissue box or egg carton to use as the body, use rubber bands or fishing wire as the strings, use a cylinder like a toilet roll for the guitar neck, and then strum your way to rock history!
Natalie Centenera reports:
To Make a Shaking Instrument: Tape two paper plates together, or fold one in half, fill it with rice and you have a maraca! Or simply put some rice in a plastic cup. To Make Drums: Some simple boxes are all that’s needed, plastic lids for symbols, and put some rice in a box to mimic the sound of a snare drum! Decorating an instrument is also fun. There was plenty of sticking, stamping, cutting and pasting of coloured paper and feathers happening around the room, even the parents were enjoying the creative atmosphere. A group sing-along was held at the end of the workshop, so all children could use their newly engineered instrument to make some tunes.

‘White fella bushman’ paintings are all heart and soul
Two Wells Artist Owen Jones in his studio.
Picture Perfect “I love to paint. It’s just something for me, and if someone likes it, it’s a bonus.” Award winning artist Owen Jones, who has seen much of country Australia during his time as a stockman, now calls Two Wells home. “It’s a great place” he says, “this is the last stop.” Jones immigrated to Australia from Stockport, England with his family when he was just eight years old. “Came straight off the ship and went to the middle of nowhere on my grandmother’s wheat farm.” It was here, near Loxton on the Murray River, that he fell in love with the Australian landscape and has been able to recreate those beautiful scenic images that have been embedded in his memory ever since. When he paints, he says, “I sort of hear the sounds, everything you see.” His studio is home to a lot of ‘Murray’ paintings. “It’s from the soul, from the heart,” he adds. Although he discovered his artistic ability at a young age, he hasn’t always put paintbrush to canvas. He went working out bush from the age of 14, on cattle and sheep stations, until 20 years ago, and only started painting again when he returned to life in the city. ‘From bushman to brushman’, is cleverly cited on his facebook page. Health issues saw Jones retire early, surviving a heart attack 10 years ago at age 50. “I died on the table” he states matter of factly. And after having four stents put in his heart- “I volunteered to be an experiment”, he says, laughing off the gravity of the situation, he is now enjoying time with family, being creative. He paints full time in a little studio at the back of his home, and has sold his critically acclaimed artwork internationally. Arthur Streeton and Arthur Boyd are Australian landscape artists with whom he finds inspiration, however, he has been told by critics that he has a “completely different style to everyone else,” which is perhaps why he has clientele from all over the world. Two Wells Echo, November, 2015
Natalie Centenera Reports: The internet has been a major asset in selling his work overseas, and after one of his pieces was sent to Europe, he “was shocked”. “I’ve won competitions,” he tells, the most satisfying of these are the people’s choice awards, “that means a lot to me.” “Americans like my work. Especially the landscapes.” However, it’s not only his landscape pieces that are fetching praise, Jones experiments with different techniques and styles and is producing sought after abstract paintings. Having often been compared to the American abstract expressionist artist, Jackson Pollock and his ‘drip paintings’, Jones has now moved away from that style and is exploring others. When asked about his process and approach to his work, Jones explains that it’s not the actual process of painting that takes up his time “it’s the coming up with ideas.” “I have a lot of trouble sleeping at night, I lie awake thinking about it,” he states. “My wife is very supportive,” he chuckles. “She lets me know when to stand back from a piece,” he says referring to his abstract pieces, “There comes a point when you have to know when to stop.” Often working on numerous pieces at the one time, Jones enjoys experimenting, and paints with both acrylics and oils, where he believes he has found his niche.
“I like to work with oils,” he said. “Oils blend in very nice”. His passion and experimentation now see him vary successfully between a myriad of different styles; from landscapes to still life, impressionism to abstract. Exhibiting his work at the Glenelg Art Gallery, Jones recounts the time he was called “white fella bushman” by an indigenous fellow-showing artist who could not remember his name, so instead referred to his artwork, an inadvertent nod to his ability to capture the essence of the land. A solo exhibition in Port Adelaide saw all 25 pieces on show sold. “People often ask me ‘can you part with your paintings?’ and I tell them, yes, I can.” “They are still out there, being enjoyed.” He has more recently exhibited locally at the Gawler Community Gallery, however, much of his work is now sold via his facebook page, Owen Jones art, which has the ability to reach anywhere in the world. He has been commissioned privately to produce individual pieces, clients often sending pictures for him to recreate on the canvas. He is hoping to install better lighting in his small studio so he can work effectively at night, whilst playing soft music, being quiet and alone. Jones has a relaxed and casual manner about him and is open about his healthy relationship with God. “I pray every day.” “I’d hate to live in this world without God.” Perhaps it is this spiritual bond that facilitates his ability to translate his emotions to the canvas in front of him. When asked what has been a career high, he ponders his answer. “It does feel good winning, but sometimes you might make a brush stroke, and something pops out…an accident that works. “Sometimes I forget to eat. I just love painting.” Owen Jones Art Studio is open by appointment at 1 Old Mallala road, Two Wells. Contact 0410 217 656 for an appointment.

40th party for Andrea Pictures: Bec Obrien The men wore dapper suits with braces and hats, the ladies were dressed in shimmer and shine and there were feather boas all round. What cause I hear you ask? Why local Lewiston resident Andrea Humphrys’ 40th birthday bash of course. Andrea celebrated on Saturday August 29 with about 60 family and friends at her home in Lewiston. Many had travelled from across the state, as well as interstate, to attend and everyone got into the spirit of the night by dressing up in 1920 inspired costumes.
Mark & Kay milestones Well-known local couple Mark and Kay Boon also had a few candles to blow out this year. While Mark’s 80th birthday was actually earlier in the year and Kay’s 60th was in September, the pair held a joint low-key celebration at home with friends and family on Sunday September 20. Happy birthday everyone!

The proof was in the pudding…or maybe it was the lack of pudding due to the bowls being licked clean! Two Wells Red Cross held a successful Chef’s Toolbox cooking party on Tuesday October 7, with attendees treated to a yummy chicken and chorizo risotto followed by sticky date pudding with caramel sauce, all cooked with a smile by consultant Maxine Symes of Mallala. The group achieved sales of just over $2000 and received a small frypan and Brazier pot, together worth over $300, which they plan to raffle off at the street parade in December. Keep an eye out for the Two Wells Red Cross ladies, who will be serving free coffee, tea and scones at the town’s street parade on Friday December 11.

FIRE DANGER SEASON
SPECIAL FEATURE
ACT NOW
or risk a fire at your doorstep The countryside is looking lovely and everything is growing well. However, the strong growth of weeds and other vegetation will result in increased fire fuel loads, unless steps are taken now to control that growth. Land owners and occupiers are reminded that now is a good time to begin preparing for the Fire Danger Season by taking some of the following steps: Removing all dead vegetation from around houses and out buildings; Pruning lower limbs of trees and shrubs within 20 metres of the house; Mowing or slashing grasses particularly around the property boundaries; Disposing of all garden waste through mulching, shredding, com-
posting or dumping at Council’s waste transfer stations; Poisoning weeds; Establishing fire resistant plants in the house garden; And checking roof areas for loose tiles or sheeting, gaps in eaves, litter in gutters etc. and arrange repairs as needed. The 2015/16 Fire Danger Season will begin on the earlier date of Sunday November 1, 2015. Council staff will be conducting regular inspections of the area to make sure that properties are in a fire-safe condition prior to that date. Further information is available from Council Staff on 8862 0800 during business hours, or at www.cfs.sa.gov.au.

During that time no fires may be lit in the open unless a permit for that purpose has been obtained from Council. Permits will not be issued prior to March 1, 2016. Contact Council for details of the rules relating to fires in the open for cooking and comfort purposes.

PUBLIC NOTICE
TO ALL LANDOWNERS AND OCCUPIERS IN THE FOLLOWING COUNCIL AREAS Pursuant to the Fire & Emergency Services Act 2005, the owner of private land in the country must take reasonable steps to protect property on the land from fire and to prevent or inhibit the outbreak of fire on the land, or the spread of fire through the land and minimise the threat to human life from a fire on the land. Maximum Penalty $5000.
Dry spring heralds an early fire danger season DATES for the 2015/16 Fire Danger Season have been announced with nine regions, including the Mid North, being brought forward to start earlier than normal. Persistent warmer-than-average conditions throughout spring have meant fuel loads across the state are dryer and there is a greater risk of bushfire. Acting CFS director Preparedness Operations Phil McDonough says the start dates for the Fire Danger Seasons are made in consultation with Bushfire Management Committees and land management agencies across the state. “We consider factors such as soil dryness index, fuel curing, and climate outlook to determine when the season will start in each district,” he said. “During the Fire Danger Season restrictions will be in place on the use of fire, land holders are advised to check with their Local Council and the CFS website before lighting a fire.” Two Wells Echo, November, 2015
Mr McDonough says the community plays a significant role in being bushfire ready. “Bushfires can happen at any time of the year so it’s important as we head into the Fire Danger Season everyone is contributing to reducing the impact of bushfires,” he said. “It’s a joint responsibility and those in or adjacent to bushfire prone areas need to ensure their home is bushfire ready by clearing away excess fuels and ensuring they have a bushfire action plan in place.” Mr McDonough says CFS volunteers are well trained professionals ready to respond if needed. “Without doubt the greatest asset of the CFS is the 14,000 plus volunteers who respond to incidents across South Australia every day,” he said. For more information on restrictions during the Fire Danger Season and how to develop a Bushfire Survival Plan, visit the CFS website at www.cfs.sa.gov.au
Council officers will be inspecting properties from early October onwards, to assess compliance with CFS requirements. Property owners issued with a Bushfire Hazard Reduction Compliance Notice are required to comply with the requirements of that notice within the required time indicated or Council may organise a contractor to perform the work required, at the owners expense and may take further legal action against them. PLEASE NOTE, Council is able to issue an Expiation Notice for the offence of not complying with the requirements of Bushfire Hazard Reduction Compliance Notice. Fee for non compliance $315.
CFS Requirements: • Vacant town blocks are required to have all dry flammable material reduced to a maximum height of 10 cm by means of slashing or mowing or removing, and to be maintained throughout the Fire Danger Season. • House blocks are required to have all dry flammable grass material reduced to a maximum height of 10 cm by means of slashing or mowing or removing, and to be maintained throughout the Fire Danger Season. • Larger blocks (more than 1 hectare) will require having a firebreak, slashed or mowed to maximum height of 10cm to a minimum width of 5 metres around property boundary, and with a minimum width of 20 metres around any building or asset on the property. This must also be maintained throughout the Fire Danger Season. • All flammable material must be stored in a safe manner. Please have an ongoing maintenance program to keep your property fire safe. Council thanks property owners and occupiers for the attention they put towards fire safety. Who knows, it may be your own home you save.

The course is an extensive parkland setting, carefully looked after by a great group of volunteers. Overlooking the grandeur from the decking, it is difficult not to relax and breathe in the serenity. A pleasant walk or ride in a cart awaits you. Currently a fee of $145 will get you summer golf from October 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016. Juniors (under 18) pay just $32-50! What a bargain! With these prices, it makes sense to join! “Not only does the club hope the people of Balaklava can see the value and attraction of this great deal, but we also extend a hearty invitation to golfers of the surrounding regions who wish to play some summer golf while their home club goes into recess over summer,” BGC secretary, Scott Michael, said. “Golf is often stereotyped as an old man’s game, but Jason Day doesn’t seem to agree with that! The club encourages young men and women to use the facility, so just go out and have a look at what’s there.” For those who only wish to visit BGC on the odd occasion, a daily flat green fee of $20 per player applies. You can play from dawn ‘til dusk if you wish!
Enjoying the benefits, new Balaklava Golf Club Members from left, Helen Wilson, Gary Wehr and Ingrid Brice. The layout is challenging, yet generous, with ample space for the odd wayward shot. Experienced golfers will instantly appreciate the quality of the course, and beginners can bask in the surroundings. Practise nets are available near the carpark, so you don’t have to chase balls! Competition days are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays all year, while ladies play on Thursdays in the winter season. Saturday
competitions are scheduled to tee off from 12 noon. During summer, a heat policy applies, so contact club captain, Wayne Nagle on 0419 801 679 to clarify start times. Ladies play on Thursday mornings from April to September, and then move their competition to Wednesdays in the summer season, coinciding with the regular men’s competition on that day. This makes for a sociable day for all players. A nine hole competition proved to be very
popular in winter this year, with those ladies meeting up with the 18 holers in the clubhouse after play. Ladies captain this year is Jill Taylor, and vice captain is Louise Michael, and any ladies who are interested in playing either nine or 18 holes, or just want to have a try, can ring Jill on 0417 889 196 or Louise on 0438 286 275. Twilight golf is about to start on October 22 with tee off between 5.30 – 6pm on Thursday evenings.
Greg Sonntag joined the hole-inone club last year. “This year, vice-captain Peter Thompson, will be running a skins two-person ambrose competition with prize money, on specific nights throughout the twilight season, in conjunction with the normal stableford nine-hole competition,” Scott said. “Twilight is always enjoyed by those who participate - it’s a very casual evening, finishing with a barbecue tea and cool air blowing past the deck! And you don’t need to be a member or have a handicap to play twilight golf, so it’s great for beginners.” Nominate your team of two to Peter asap on 0418 896 808 so he can work out a draw. Often referred to as “Australia’s best kept secret,” Balaklava Golf Club hopes the secret gets out! Come and see for yourself! Remembrance Day ceremony Two Wells RSL November 11 is Remembrance Day and once again the Two Wells RSL will hold a short service to commemorate the occasion. The service will be held on Wednesday November 11 at the Two Wells War Memorial at 11am. This year’s service will be conducted by TWRSL vice president John Atherton as president Tony Flaherty is attending another service being held at BAE Systems. Everyone is invited back to the RSL hall after the service for light refreshments. History Book Launch Local history enthusiast, long-time Lewiston resident and neighbourhood watch member, Anne Porter, has written a book detailing the history of Lewiston. Anne has had support from the District Council of Mallala to get the book printed, with the official launch taking place at the Two Wells Public Library on Monday November 16. Congratulations Anne. If you’re in the neighbourhood why not drop in and show your support for Anne? A “Super Stinker” of an Air Show The McColl family of Lewiston are pretty keen air enthusiasts. They even have
their own small plane, which they tow around on a trailer all over the state and then fly from one place to the next. Earlier this month the family attended the Nhill Airshow, where young Brodie fell in love with Aerobatic pilot and 13-time Australian Aerobatic Champion, Chris Sperou and his plane Super Stinker so much that he asked the face painter there to paint Super Stinker on his face, which, according to mum Karen, was the most challenging face painting request she encountered all day. Afterwards Brodie sought out Chris to show him his “facework”, and Chris was thrilled, with the moment caught on camera. A few weeks later the McColls flew to Jamestown to attend the Airshow there and caught up with Chris again, where they presented him with a framed copy of the photos. Nice one guys. Brodie and his brother, Bayleigh also got to sit in the Royal Flying Doctor simulator aircraft at the airshow. Looks like a lot of fun all round.

Tamara’s Finger Fruit Cake This original and clever creation came to ‘fruition’ after Two Wells local, Tamara Mason, was in charge of celebrating a colleague’s birthday at a kindergarten that has a healthy eating policy- meaning, no cakes allowed. After much consideration, she was able to still create a cake to celebrate the birthday and abide by the school’s policy, as well as coinciding with the term’s theme of “eat a rainbow”. The finger fruit cake is a spectacular idea to get kids eating different fruits and requires no cutting as all the pieces are held together with a tooth pick that is easily pulled out and nibbled on. NON-EDIBLE SUPPLIES Toothpicks Two blocks of floral foam which can be purchased at a florist, Spotlight and Cheap as Chips Cake board Glue alfoil INGREDIENTS Selection of fruits that are available at the time in season. Tamara used the following: strawberries tangelos mandarins rockmelon bananas watermelon yoghurt covered cranberries (or something similar like a marshmallow) METHOD Cut out round shape from floral foam- or square if that’s what you prefer. Use glue to stick pieces of foam together and then cover with alfoil. Chop up fruit, can also use a melon baller Put pieces of fruit on end of toothpick and place neatly into the covered foam. Use cranberries to fill in the places where there may be a gap. Two Wells Echo, November, 2015

echo 22 MESSAGE TO RESIDENTS: From DCM Mayor Duncan Kennington N Congratulations to Tash and the team for running another successful Pony Rescue fundraiser in September and raising $928 in the process. Numerous stallholders contributed to the result including: Gizelle Hamilton from Sacred Horse Equine Myofunctional Therapy; Nichole Conlin from Nicholes Cakery; Team Turner from Secondhand Saddlery; Ashley Kearvell from Glow Natural Salt Lamps; Rachelle Luscott from Sound Steeds Equissage Therapy; Kristie Black from Mary Kay Skin Care; and Narrie Macartney from Apollo’s Saddlery. Anyone who needs help to re-home a horse or pony they can no longer care for can ring Tania on 0428 148 802 for help. Also anyone wanting to enquire about becoming a horse foster carer should ring Tania. N On Wednesday September 30 I had the pleasure of cutting the ribbon for the opening of Stage 4 of the D’Vine Ripe tomato complex. It’s notable that the largest indoor horticultural facility of its type in the Southern Hemisphere is in our district. With employment set to increase to about 650 with the expansion this provides the potential for numerous jobs for locals. N The Baker Road Ford upgrade was officially opened recently. It has been a long time coming but with the cooperation of the state government and the City of Playford has come to fruition. The road is now safer, smoother and should only flood as a rarity. I gave it a test run the same day and awarded it the thumbs up.
Importance of native plants taught I recently read in Mallala council’s communicator that council is working in collaboration with Mallala and Two Wells primary school to build nurseries so students can get hands on experience in propagating plants for their school sites. This is a great initiative that should be supported by everyone within our community. I was lucky enough to work at Two Wells primary school, together with a dedicated group of students, staff and parents, we were able to establish a re-vegetation habitat corridor, linking the Two Wells preschool with the Primary school. The aim of this project was to increase students/community awareness of the importance of local native plants and the role these plants play in increasing biodiversity to our region. A grant from the Natural Resource Management Board (NRM) provided funds along with support from local businesses to
Two Wells, Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group With Mark Webb
source plants and materials together with numerous working bees to establish this area. Students will now have an opportunity to harvest seeds from these plants and now due to council’s involvement will have a nursery to propagate plants on school site and help our community revegetate our region. N As summer approaches please be mindful of snakes and lizards within your property, according to statistics 97 per cent of human snake bite cases are due to people trying to interfere with the snake. So, if you happen to see one don’t try to catch it, because you may end up being one of those
97 per cent. Do your family a favour and get a professional. Think of it this way: if you are successful in catching a snake the people around you especially children will believe, they can catch a snake just like you, but they may not be so lucky. Our young people learn from the adults around them, don’t teach them to catch snakes. Snakes play a vital link within the natural ecology of our region, which means they are here for a reason, that said there are a number reasons why a snake will be on your property, the main reasons being food or shelter. Limit these resources and the chances of a snake being on your property is greatly reduced. Areas of shelter that come to mind are piles of materials such as old tyres, building materials, wood piles etc, these areas attract a number of animal species that make up the snakes diet including mice and rats both of which can spread diseases.

Pictured (back row) is, Jan Claire-Wisdom, DCM mayor Duncan Kennington, chairman James Bruce AM, Geoff Strempel, Vini Ciccarello, (front row) Scott Hicks, Andrew Luckhurst-Smith, Helen Nichols, SLSA Director Alan Smith, and Lyn Spurling.
On Wednesday, October 22, the Library Board of South Australia visited the Two Wells library as part of its two-day tour of libraries in the region. Each year the board completes a tour of different libraries in the state to familiarise themselves with the facilities and engage with staff to gain an understanding of what is happening at each location. This is an important occasion as it is these board members that create the strategic directions of the state libraries, make recommendations to the minister and control funding. The board arrived in the morning and were welcomed by the library staff and DCM mayor Duncan Kennington with a morning tea and beautiful weather.
Council’s debt explained The October meeting of the Two Wells Regional Action Team was extremely well attended including two visitors. We were especially pleased to welcome the CEO of the District Council of Mallala Ms Katrina Marton, who had graciously given her time to meet with our team. People attending introduced themselves and spoke of their involvement in the area so that Ms Marton had some knowledge of the make-up of the team. She was especially impressed that we have two quite young members on the team. Ms Marton addressed the meeting and spoke of her hopes for the whole of the council area and the problems associated with caring for such a vast area with limited resources. She addressed the current council debt situation and explained how most councils need to carry a debt as they prepare and provide for the future. As the growing population base increases the council’s income, this debt will be negated. Then council will again look to the future needs of the area and plan and invest accordingly, so may well be need to be in debt again. Ms Marton is working to make sure

Two Wells and Districts Tennis Club held a couple of tennis fun days during the school holidays with 50 children taking part over the two days. The first fun day was on Thursday October 1 from 2-4pm and attracted 27 kids, nine of which were first time players. The program was run by Haydn and Rebecca Leo who kept the two hours packed with activities. Haydn is a SA Foundation Cup coach and Rebecca is a qualified personal trainer who specialises in human movement.
The second tennis fun day was Wednesday October 7 and attracted 23 kids, some who repeated from the first week, but three that were new to tennis. John Hosking, who has a Level 1 Tennis Australia Junior Development qualification, and is also our new club coach, provided the non-stop entertainment and was very well liked by the kids for his energy and fun approach to tennis. Older kids participated in the fastest serve and hit the target competition, which was a lot of fun. Overall these two days were our most successful tennis pre-season events.
Musical horses and ponies at TWE&PC Dressage Day
ABOVE: Enjoying the day on their greys in fancy dress and riding to an ABBA Remix was Charlotte Rawle and Shelley Henderson.
Report: Bec O’Brien Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club held a successful, fun and fascinating musical dressage and team ride day on Sunday October 18. Dressage tests were conducted individually, in pairs or in threes while tunes floated over the airwaves, and the club’s senior and sub-junior drill teams also performed routines to music. TWE&PC member and rider, Kristy Pearn, helped organise the day, saying feedback from the event had been really positive. “This is the second year we have run this day,” Kristy said, “It allows riders to achieve their Musical Ride and Team Ride pony club patches, but mostly we do it because it is great fun!” Riders could either complete a set dressage test or one of their own creation and chose suitable accompanying music. Fancy Dress was optional. The club’s next rally is its Closed One Day Event on Sunday November 1. November 15 is the club’s Patch Day, where riders can work toward attaining their pony club achievement patches, and on December 6 is the popular Hack Show. Summer sports revving up again
BELOW: Action from the 2015 Action Pistol National Championship at Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club at Korunye.
Report: Adam Bail TWGC secretary October has brought to a close a wonderful golfing season at Two Wells for 2015. This month a number of different players hit the top of the leaderboard with some superb results in both the individual and team events. This was evident all season with a wide array of players picking up prizes in the season competitions taking home a nice bounty of prizes at our presentation day on September 26. Another huge applause on the day went out to our Club Champions Stuart Grigg (A Grade) and Ian Clark (B Grade) for hitting their straps at just the right time earlier in the year. Congratulations to all of the season trophy winners it was a terrific day to finish off the season. A big thank you must also go out to our hard working committee who have all put in a huge effort to continue the club’s success this season. They have been superbly supported by the club’s very generous members and sponsors without whom the club’s competitions and course would not be the successes they are. Our golfing season has now come to an end, however for all those interested in giving golf a crack at Two Wells we will be back on board firing on all cylinders next March. So put it in your 2016 calendar, get in a little bit of practise over the summer and we would love to see you out there. Two Wells Golf Club also has a website, www. twowellsgolfclub.com.au with a wealth of information about the course, competitions, membership information and everything else you need to know. Come out and play!
Korunye hosts best shooters Once again Korunye became a “home away from home” for the best pistol shooters in Australia. The 2015 Action Pistol National Championship was hosted by Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club recently, in one of the best sport shooting facilities in the state. The first leg of this competition, Sport Shooters’ Association of Australia Championship, finished Monday October 19. The second leg, Pistol Australia Championship, finished last Saturday.
Report: Rafal Lukasiewicz APSC secretary Over 60 athletes enjoyed Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club’s hospitality and competed in three categories of guns: production, metallic and open. The recently upgraded ranges, with only a couple of days to spare before the competition started, were built by a group of enthusiasts led by Leon O. and Trevor W., pouring thousands of volunteer
labour hours into this project. Shooting sports is gaining momentum in recent years and the number of shooting club members is growing Australia-wide. Premier facilities, like the one at Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club, will attract more national and international events and will help promote our region. More information about Adelaide Pistol and Shooting Club or sport shooting in general can be found on the club’s website: www.apsc. org.au.
n From back page Hot Shots coaching will again be available this season for beginners and more experienced players with the club’s new coach John Hosking. The junior primary students participated in a range of tabloid games including the egg and spoon race, skittles, sack race, and sprints, as well as modified long jump and hurdles. Primary students competed in high jump, long jump, hurdles, and running events, before taking

T-Birds softball Masters!
The winning Gawler Masters 35+, C grade, div 3 team at the recent Masters Games in Adelaide.
By T-Birds member Sally Green Two Wells’ softball team, the T-Birds, has had a great start to the season with both divisions winning their first games. Division 1 defeated Bluejays White 17-2, with great batting by Amanda Kennison, Sally Green and Steph Agnello. A great pitching/catching combination played by Sally and Steph was terrific to watch. The Division 2 team defeated the new Munno Para team 23-2, with great batting by Patti Green and Linda Rushton. New comer Amelia Benn pitched well for her first game with Two Wells in this match. The club also had six representatives from Two Wells play in the Australian Masters Games softball competition recently, winning Gold for their efforts. Playing in Adelaide, the team consisted of players over 35 and over 45 (the oldest member being 61 years of age!). Congratulations to Two wells players, Patti Green, Linda Rushton, Karin Farrugia, Heather Baldock, Ange Mann and Sarah McMillan.
Fish out your bats, bowls, racquets and balls…
