Cracking down on off-roaders Drivers be warned. If you are contemplating taking your new motorbike or off road vehicle out for a spin and have yet to obtain the correct license and insurance, you risk a hefty fine. Recently, Two Wells Police issued three separate fines to at least three individuals, at a costly $1654 per person, for driving an unregistered and uninsured motorbike without the ap-

propriate license at Middle Beach. That’s well over $4000 in fines - a lot for anyone to pay for just a “bit of fun”. Two Wells Police say Middle Beach is a hotspot for off road vehicles and advise all road users to ensure they have the correct license and insurance for the vehicle they are driving, and to stick to designated roads at all times.

Rebuild, rebrand

District Council of Mallala endorsed its 2016/17 budget and Annual Business Plan (ABP) at its July 18 meeting, with the financial year ahead set to be one of consolidation, rebuilding and rebranding, where residents will receive an average 3.2 per cent rate increase. DCM chief executive officer, James Miller, says the ABP and budget deliberations commenced in March this year, with three separate workshops held with elected members between March and May.

Mallala budget carries modest rate rise

Council released its ABP and budget following a special meeting on May 30 and received two formal submissions at the conclusion of the public consultation period. “Council has elected to adopt a conservative draft ABP and budget for 2016/17,” Mr Miller said. “I see the forthcoming year as one of consolidation for our council. “We need to focus on rebuilding

Bec O’Brien reports: our management structure, delivering on our new Strategic Plan for the next four years, and continuing to be efficient in the manner in which we deliver services to our community.” An average 3.2% rate increase for residents is lower than in previ-

ous years but is one Mr Miller says will ensure council delivers on its program. “In the context of ever increasing costs of living, (it) represents a sound and measured rate increase for our community,” he said. The budget includes significant renewal projects across arterial road sealing rehabilitation networks as well as unsealed road re-sheet net-

works amounting to $1.7m. In addition, upgrade projects such as a $200,000 Dublin Road drainage correction and sealing program is also forecast. Mr Miller said council was pleased with the positive feedback on the draft ABP and budget from the community and its focus into the new year will be on reviewing its long term financial plan and strategic direction whilst maintaining discipline over spending throughout the organisation.

Lorraine and Ray Prior of Virginia Meat Store officially retired on July 2, ending a 40-year business association with the town.

Doors close for Priors as Virginia meat suppliers Another Virginia icon shut its doors last month, with long-time local butcher Ray Prior and wife, Lorraine, retiring after 50 years in the business. The couple’s Virginia Meat Store was a family tradition for many locals over the past few decades and will no doubt be sorely missed. A Two Wellian, Ray started his apprenticeship as a 15-yearold lad with Goss and Lamont butchers before moving with this business to Virginia a few years later. In 1974 as a young 23-yearold, Ray went into partnership with the business that helped teach him his trade, and provided good quality meats to hundreds of people each week

Bec O’Brien reports: from the shop near the Commonwealth Bank (which is now the current Bendigo Bank site) Both Ray and Lorraine were, and still are, community-minded people, regularly supporting the local school and offering sponsorship to sporting groups within the district. They immersed themselves in sports too, with Ray playing football and cricket for Virginia for many years, as well as trying his hand at coaching. Lorraine too was a dab hand at sports, playing tennis and netball for the town year after year. In 1995 the couple opened the Virginia Meat Store, down

Old Port Wakefield Road a little way, at the SDA shopping centre, and continued to give back to the community. At the Two Wells Golf Club the weekly Virginia Meat Store meat tray was highly sought after and became much prized; you went home a winner if you managed to score it. They’ve seen much change in the township and in the industry too but are ready to step back. “I’m going to miss all the regular customers we’ve had over the years,” Ray said of his retirement. “But it’s a different clientele these days, different cultural patterns. Beef and lamb prices are record high, it’s very hard

to make any margin. “People are going to have to buy a lot more of the cheaper cuts.” “To survive we’ve stayed ‘old’,” Lorraine added. “We’ve had fresh meat, good meat and it’s been reasonably priced. “I’ll definitely miss the interaction with so many different people.” Married in 1972 Ray and Lorraine have two children, Michelle and Leah, and five grandchildren. They are looking forward to spending more quality time with their family and taking the odd short trip here and there. Happy retirement Ray and Lorraine.

n From the Mayor, Tony Flaherty A few months in with a new CEO, mayor and deputy mayor and the District Council of Mallala is in the mood for change. The elected members are all working well together and our staff are as good as I’ve seen since the 90s. We are blessed with James Miller as CEO. What he has done so far and what he is about to do with the planned staff restructure, the Two Wells township and general development in the area, will really help the community and council work together. Our monthly council meetings are becoming informative and inclusive, and

before the end of the year we will have a new councillor. Hopefully this person will be a younger person with key ingredients inclusive of business skills, family, and a history of community involvement. I hope many will apply. A new council name may be in the wind and again the community will decide this. Our ratepayers association needs to grow so that it is truly representative of our whole community. We have all had growing pains but that’s what makes us strong and it’s important to remember that forgiveness is a key ingredient to everyone’s success.

Growers address issues at Ausveg forum South Australian vegetable industry association AUSVEG SA recently convened its first meeting of the Northern Adelaide Plains “Innovation Support Forum”. The forum is a new initiative to help the region’s leading vegetable growers discuss key political and industry issues that are impacting on their growing operations. The first forum was held on the northern Adelaide Plains on Tuesday July 19 and focused on a number of issues relevant to growers, including a lack of business support for grow-

Bec O’Brien reports: ers, a need for water infrastructure in the region and the importance of continued investment in industry research and development to benefit growers. AUSVEG SA state manager Jordan Brooke-Barnett said the objective of the group was to learn more about the pressing political and production issues facing growers in the state and aid AUSVEG SA to better advocate on their behalf. “These forums are particularly

pertinent to the region’s growers as the forums have a regional development agenda with an aim of improving growing, business and political conditions for growers in that area of the state, which is vital to the South Australian economy,” Mr Brooke-Barnett said.” “AUSVEG SA has a strong track record of delivering much-needed services for the region’s growers, including involvement in Reverse Trade Missions and an Integrated Pest Management reseller program, and will take the findings from these

forums and act on them to ensure that growers’ concerns are being adequately addressed.” According to Mr Brooke-Barnett, AUSVEG SA is the leading body representing the interests of vegetable producers in the state and provides growers with a united voice and strong representation with all levels of government. “We will be taking the ideas generated in this forum with a view to turning them into on-the-ground programs for growers’ benefits, with support of industry partners such as

Horticulture Innovation Australia and the South Australian government,” he said. “In addition, issues that are raised will provide valuable grower input to help guide the AUSVEG SA and AUSVEG national body in ongoing campaigns through the media and with political figures. In coming months further Innovation Support Forums are planned for other prominent vegetable growing areas such as the Adelaide Hills. Visit the AUSVEG SA website for more information.

TWRAT member and Two Wells local, Malcolm Frost, hopes a proposed floating pontoon and gangway at the Port Gawler wharf site will soon become a reality. Port Gawler is either a popular fishing spot or an out of the way dumping ground for burnt out cars – depending on who you talk to. But the Two Wells Regional Action Team hopes a proposed floating pontoon will breathe new life into the area and attract visitors by providing better access and safer fishing in the channel. TWRAT member, Malcolm Frost, is driving the project, and says while the proposed $45,000 was not replaced. n From Page 1 Mallala Foreshore Committee chairperson, Barb Reid, says this is an issue that has been around for years but seems to have spiked in recent months. “Over the years there has been a problem, mainly with unlicensed and uninsured motorbikes,” Bard said. “But there seems to be another wave of them coming. “If they stay on private land it’s not so bad but when they come onto public roads they put the public at risk.” And the problem is not just limited to Middle Beach, with Barb saying all of the coastal communities in the District Council of Mallala, including Pt Parham, Webb Beach, Thompson Beach and Port Gawler, are affected at one time or another. “We can’t stop them,” she said. “The police do a very good job but we don’t have enough police to stop it (and) it’s very hard to try and track someone down if they are not local.” Police urge all local residents to be vigilant in their area and to contact Police on 131 444 if they have anything to report, or Two Wells Police Station direct on 8520 2309.

DCM’s culture change drives new direction Bec O’Brien reports: Mallala farmer, John Lush, has been re-elected as president of the District Council of Mallala Ratepayers and Residents Association, following its annual general meeting on Monday July 25. Held at the Two Wells Community Centre, DCM chief executive officer, James Miller, was the keynote speaker, with three prospective nominees for DCM’s supplementary election in the Lewiston ward, also introducing themselves, and speaking to over 40 people in attendance. Mr Lush opened the meeting with his president’s report, stating the past 12 months had not only seen a period of growth and adjustment from all sides of council, but an actual culture change within the organisation. “There were dark clouds hanging over the council,” he said. “We despaired about what future relationship we’d have. “But those days are gone, so much has changed. “A year ago we didn’t dare to dream that we could be in the situation we are now. “There has been a definite culture change, which I didn’t think would happen.” Mr Lush highlighted the council’s recent July meeting as a point in case, saying the common direction of elected members, staff and the broader public was palpable. “The optimism about our future was contagious,” he said. “There’s a new degree of cooperation and consideration. “There are still some challenges ahead but we have more chance of success with the collaborative approach we have today.” Mr Lush touched on the need for council to carefully consider its financial position, plan strategically for re-zoning of land for industrial use and hoped prospective initiatives in the district, such as the International Bird Sanctuary, would be an opportunity for council to seize.

Thank you for your vote of confidence at the recent election. I appreciate your ongoing support for my fight for our community.

Mr Miller repeatedly referred to council’s new direction of working together with the ratepayer association and the community, as well as strengthening internal relationships, to create an environment of transparency and unity.

“We are here to make a change,” he said. “At the end of the day it’s all about relationship building. “It’s not rocket science.” Following the keynote address three prospective candidates for the position of councillor for the vacant Lewiston ward were given an opportunity to introduce themselves, with business graduate Margherita Panella, former councillor Michael Picard and local flower businessman Frank Meola all putting their hand up and saying a few words.

Summerton’s parting barb for DCM District Council of Mallala councillor Tom Summerton has resigned due to ill health, but has left his position feeling disillusioned. Diagnosed with Myeloma, a blood cancer, last October, Mr Summerton carried on with his councillor duties despite undergoing weeks of chemotherapy. Recently, however, this struggle became too much, and he resigned at the end of June. An election for the ward of Lewiston will be held in coming weeks, with nominations opening on August 25 and closing early September. Mr Summerton was first appointed to DCM in 2000, after a “terrible” road in his district, ignored for years, inspired him to put his hand up and try to get something done about it. He has served two 3-year terms and two 4-year terms, plus two years of this current term – 16 years in total - and says while it was his health that made the decision to leave easier it was by no means the only reason. Mr Summerton says in recent years the council chamber has become a bit of a farce, where many decisions are made then rescinded

Bec O’Brien reports: shortly after, where councillors attend unprepared and where common sense seems to be lacking. “They make decisions and then they change their minds,” he said. “The levy at Parham was all going ahead, had approval, we’d even got a grant, then council decided not to do it. “There was 18 months of gathering information down the drain. “I thought that was damned disgusting, and they do this all the time.” Mr Summerton didn’t want to name names but believed some councillors had worked purposefully to dislodge particular council employees, including former CEO Katrina Marton, out of their positions. “Over a period of time, we’ve lost some very good people, in my opinion, because of the councillors,” he said. “When you look back, they got rid of our last CEO and they didn’t give her ago. “They didn’t really give her a go, and it cost council over $200,000.

“Enough’s enough, it’s most annoying, and once I got this (cancer) I thought, do I really need this?” Mr Summerton has spent countless hours working for his community and cites helping secure and establish the playground in Lewiston, despite the controversy it caused, as one of the many highlights. He said he was disappointed councillors voted not to move the main council office to Two Wells, but believes this is an issue that will arise again in the future. “This is where all the people are and it gives people more of a chance to be involved,” he said. “But there’s lots of challenges for council. “Probably to survive financially, that’s their biggest problem, also a name change would be good. “I’d like to see that happen, as long as it takes in everyone not just Mallala.” While Mr Summerton’s resignation has opened up a spot on council it has also brought a sense of optimism from other councillors, including mayor, Tony Flaherty. Mr Flaherty said Mr Summerton made a significant contribution to the district of Mallala in his time on

outgoing Lewiston Ward councillor, Tom Summerton, left council disillusioned. council and wished him well in the future, adding it was now a chance for someone new to come on board with new ideas. This is a thought echoed by both deputy mayor Marcus Strudwicke, and Lewiston ward councillor, Karen McColl. “There’ll be an election coming up and it is an opportunity for a new face on council,” Mr Strudwicke said. “I would hope that we get a lot of nominations and quite a bit of enthusiasm for council.

“Tom has done a good job over many years (and) new blood means new ideas.” Councillor McColl said it was sad someone had to resign due to ill health. “I certainly wish Tom all the best, but I just hope that people in the community take it as an opportunity,” she said. “It’s creating an opportunity for someone to stand up and have a say, as often the community is quite critical. “This is their chance not to sit back and be apathetic, to embrace the opportunity. “Hopefully we’ll get a good number of nominations.” For those considering nominating for the ward of Lewiston, Mr Summerton has some final parting words of advice, “don’t forget the ward you live in”. “If people want to put their hand up to be councillor, the main thing I’d say is, don’t forget the ward you live in,” he said. “They’re the people that put you there and they’re the people you represent. “You’ve got to try to do the best you can for them.”

n Community outpouring all in the aim of …

Saving Jaiden Natalie Centenera reports:

Picturesque Virgara Wineries at Angle Vale was the location for a special event on Saturday July 9. A ‘ute muster’ was held on the lawns of the winery at Heaslip Road for twoyear-old Jaiden Poole, in a bid to raise much needed funds for him to travel to Brisbane with his family for a stem cell transplant. Grandfather, Mark Carter, describes his grandson as a “true fighter,” after only being given a 20 percent chance to live after his last bout of cancer, “but he is still with us,” he said. “At seven weeks old, Jaiden was diagnosed with a rare lung condition, congenital lobar emphysema (CLE) in both lungs. “At nine weeks old he had part of his left lung removed. “At 13 months old, he got leukaemia, but after extensive chemotherapy, by last Christmas he was in remission and the doctors were very happy with his progress. “Late April this year, the cancer came back, this time in his spinal fluid.” Jaiden is now undergoing more chemotherapy to rid his body of the cancer cells and if successful, will then receive a stem cell (bone marrow) transplant, which will take at least six months to do. His mother, Kristy, started up a ‘Go Fund Me’ page, under Team Jaiden, and his grandfather Mark, and aunty, Tash, helped organise the Ute Muster to help raise extra funds. Utes came from all over the local area, and one from interstate, and took part in various show and shine events. Along with a barbecue, jumping castle and face-painting for the kids, in excess of one thousand dollars was raised on the day. The Go Fund Me page has now raised over $10,000, just shy of the $12,000 target.

More questions than answers NOW OPEN Each month the Two Wells Book Club will bring you a review of the book that had been read by the group the previous month. The Book Club meets once a month at the Two Wells Library. We hope to provide you with an opportunity to engage with some books that you might never have thought to pick up and read. This month’s book is ‘Questions of Travel’ by Michelle De Kretser.

Winner of the 2013 Miles Franklin Literary award, Questions of Travel came highly recommended and with high expectations. A lengthy novel, which follows the lives of two main characters leading two very dissimilar lives. Laura, who grew up in Sydney, relocates to the United Kingdom, embarking on a series of working holidays throughout Europe, experi-

Two Wells Echo, August, 2016

ences a completely different existence to Ravi, who endures from Sri-Lanka, and whose story is told at the same time, however, they do not intertwine until the latter part of the novel. One book club member suggested that the novel could have simply been two very different books, and all members were left feeling unfulfilled after spending a significant amount of time labouring through the, often confusing, prose. As the title of the book suggests, travelling is central to the theme. The reasons for travelling in the modern world, and what an individual gains from global exploration, immigra-

tion or simply ‘touring’ is pondered. Many members did find some beautiful prose among the pages - that cannot be denied. The author’s ability to capture the essence of a moment, thought or emotion, and describe it using carefully chosen words made the read somewhat worthwhile. However, the two main characters were found to be unremarkable and the subject matter was varied and scattered. Few made it to the final pages and those that did were left wondering what the novel was really about. Next month’s book is ‘The Secret Supper’ by Javier Sierra.

The State Government has announced that it will invest $10 million to upgrade and build female change rooms. The grant program is open to all clubs and recreation groups across the state. It will be fully funded by the State Government— with no contribution required from clubs or councils. There are approximately 150,000 girls and women registered with SA sporting clubs. Concerns have been raised about a lack of

appropriate change facilities with many women’s sports teams currently forced to use male change rooms, car parks, offices or other areas at sports grounds. We want to encourage people of all ages to be fit and healthy, and that means investing in our clubs so that girls and women have access to exactly the same level of facilities as boys and men.

NDIS to create 600 new jobs in disability sector UP to 800 new jobs are anticipated to be created in the disability sector in the Mid North and Yorke Peninsula once the National Disability Insurance Scheme is fully rolled out across South Australia. The NDIS is expected to create about 6000 new jobs in South Australia by the time the full scheme in is rolled out in July 2018, many of which will be in regional areas. Recent modelling by the National Disability Insurance Agency shows up to 800 jobs will be created locally, up from about 200 existing jobs.

Disability Minister, Leesa Vlahos, urged people seeking work, or those looking for a new career direction, to consider a position in the disability sector. It is estimated that the South Australian disability workforce will increase from about 6000 full- time equivalent workers to more than 12,000 under the NDIS. These new jobs will include roles such as personal and organisational support workers, allied health professionals, mental health nurses, service coordinators and case managers.

“It will provide great opportunities for people to enter the disability workforce, either as employees of a new or existing service provider, or as self-employed contractors,” Ms Vlahos said. “As the NDIS starts to rollout across South Australia over the next two years, more jobs will become available, along with specific projects for job seekers. Anyone interested in moving to a career in the disability sector should start seeking the skills and training needed to successfully enter the disability workforce.”

Disability Minister, Leesa Vlahos.

Fourth term Champion counts his blessings Les Pearson reports: A FOURTH term, chaos amongst the Coalition and his first child on the way in a few weeks - life is pretty good for reelected Member for Wakefield, Nick Champion. He has now re-established a massive 20 per cent buffer in two-party preferred stakes after the Nick Xenophon Team (NXT) candidates plundered Liberal votes statewide. Where Liberal’s Kathleen Bourne lost about 10 per cent of Coalition votes to NXT, Mr Champion barely lost one per cent. After surviving the nationwide knockout of his Labor comrades in 2013, and a massive swing against him in his own electorate, Mr Champion takes little for granted, thanking his team and the voting public. “I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude,” he beamed on recently. “We’ve had our ups and downs but people have stuck with me and I’m really thankful for it. “Life is as challenging as it’s ever been, so you count your blessings, but I have been blessed.” Blessed is the word, as factors such as a lengthy election

Nick Champion casts his vote with wife, Fiona. campaign, called at the chilliest time of year, severely backfired against Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull. Labor was laughing as the tally room totals came in. “It was a stupid thing to do, have an eight-week election campaign in the middle of winter and the people within his party are very angry with him,” Mr Champion said. “I was around when Malcolm Turnbull was Opposition Leader and it was one stupid call after another.”

Liberal candidate, Kathleen Bourne, thanked her support team and revealed she was keen to stand again should the opportunity arise. “It was an honour and a pleasure to stand in the seat of Wakefield for the Coalition,” Ms Bourne said. “I thank those who voted for me for their support and those who didn’t for at least hearing me out. “The eight-week campaign was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done but its reward

was being able to meet so many good South Australians. “I congratulate my opponent on his success but he needs to know that next time we’ll be back and we’ll be stronger than ever.” NXT candidate, Richard Inwood, was also keen for round two. Inwood attracted about 20 per cent of the primary vote on the back of an extremely limited campaign with his ongoing work commitments. He felt the strong showing indicated the possibility of further support on the back of a stronger campaign. “If we had a bit of latitude to go at it flat out we could have had a closer result but we’ll never know,” he said. “I loved it though, it was a privilege to have the opportunity to stand and represent 110,000 people. “I truly believe any time you have that chance, you’ve got a gift. “The message is people have every right to expect Mr Champion to perform.” Marilyn Phillips (Family First) and Craig Vanstone (Greens) results were steady with 2013, losing minor ground, while newcomers, Ralph Anderson (Christian Democrats) and John Bolton (Independent) received modest support.

The State Government has also announced a $10 million investment through the Football Federation of SA to build 8 artificial pitches and upgrade facilities at football (soccer) clubs across Adelaide. The artificial pitches can be played on continuously and will encourage more young players to enjoy the fitness and social benefits associated with playing sport.

Skate park concept keeps rolling A rather depleted Two Wells Regional Action Team met for the July meeting – illness is hitting many people this winter. However, the meeting was very constructive – more support has been received for the proposal to construct a Skate Park in Two Wells. This is a very important future project and we will be calling for assistance as time goes on.

By Bev Smith-Trim, TWRAT president There is to be a supplementary election in the Lewiston Ward of the District Council of Mallala. We acknowledge the many years of service by retiring councillor Tom Summerton and thank him for his efforts on behalf of the community for so long.

There are several candidates for the position so if you reside in Lewiston Ward please take the time to vote when you receive the documents in the mail. Sadly there has not been any progress on the Craft Shop. Left vulnerable in the recent wet weather we are hoping there is no permanent damage done to the building while we await word from council for the work to proceed.

New faces are always welcome by the Team. Please consider coming along to join us – we have achieved much in the community over the years and look forward to achieving much more. Come along to our meeting on the third Wednesday evening of the month at 7.30 pm at Two Wells Catholic Church hall, Old Port Wakefield Road. Two Wells Echo, August, 2016

Kids enjoy boat building What do you get when you cross hammers, nails, sandpaper, crayons, plastic lids, straws, rubber bands, a range of materials and all sorts of bits and bobs with a group of school holiday kids looking for something to do and a large tank of water? Why the Two Wells Public Library’s first ever boat building workshop of course! Around 30 children participated in the workshop, which was held at the Two Wells Uniting Church on Tuesday July 12. Led by Robert Ayliffe and wife Ali of Straydog Boatworks – who have been running similar sessions at the Royal Adelaide Show for the past five years – the eager group of kids were soon busily designing, hammering, decorating, drilling, cutting, and threading, with each

Bec O’Brien reports:

plain piece of boat-shaped pine looking like sailing ships from yester-year and speedboats of today in no time at all. Each child was given an “organic battery kit” (which was really two small pieces of wood joined to make a cross and tightened with two rubber bands), which powered the boat. Once all the designing, making and decorating had been completed a sailing regatta was held outside in the rainwater tank, which the local CFS had kindly filled. While most of the kids relished seeing their boating creations floating merrily down the tank, many were just as pleased to see how long they would stay upside down

underwater. Suffice to say, everyone had an enjoyable and fun afternoon. Thanks to Pat Thompson and the Dublin Institute for the use of the trestle tables and Two Wells CFS for filling the water tank.

Help look after our precious eco systems I write these articles because I am passionate about our environments and I know many other people feel the same. I believe our region has some good natural landscapes including Gawler and Light rivers, reserves and our coastlines just to name a few. All of these landscapes support a rich diversity of wildlife that depend on the vegetation of our region; the greater the diversity the healthier the eco system is. A healthy eco system provides us all with many eco services including clean water, clean air, and healthy soils, just to name a few, all of which provide us with healthy foods free of pests and diseases. So it is in everyone’s interest to protect our natural resources. I am currently working with the Conservation Volunteers delivering the Green Army program. The Green Army is an Australian Government initiative, which

Two Wells, Lewiston & Districts Landcare Group With Mark Webb provides opportunities for our young people to be engaged in conservation, and restoration projects and gain accredited training in conservation land management while gaining life and job ready skills across a broad area. We are currently working across a number of sites within our region including our coastal areas. Some projects we are involved in include tree planting, erecting and repairing fences, pest animal and pest plant surveys and collecting seed so community groups can propagate plants for next year. We have just recently finished working at one of our coastal

townships removing debris, which has been dumped by what I believe to be people who have no respect for our environment and of its community. The rubbish we collected included toilet cisterns, sinks, carpets, clothing, in fact you name it we found it. We also found asbestos, which we logged on to a GPS (Global Positioning System) so people with the adequate training can retrieve at a later date. These types of waste materials have a devastating impact on the wildlife that live within our coastal ecosystems.

Green Army participants Andre Ortiz, Christopher Landherr, Tim Manfield Farrow, Kurt Wakley, Dylan Woods and Jacob Vontoff with bags of rubbish and 62 tyres which was collected over a 3-day period at one of the district’s coastal regions. One participant found a beer bottle with six dead mud crabs in it. Now you could say it was only six, but that was only one bottle and we picked up 50-60 of them. Many local birds and migra-

tory birds have been found dead with their stomachs filled with plastics, which leaves no room for food so these birds starve to death. A friend of mine recently lost

a calf because it ate a plastic bag. How can we inspire our young people to value our way of life if we don’t value it ourselves? We can make a difference, take your rubbish to a waste depot. Our councils spend tens of thousands of dollars each year clearing up the rubbish dumped in our regions, and we all pay for this. I believe if you buy a new product to replace an old one add in the cost of disposing of that item or donate it. We saw many items that could have been recycled. This is an issue that affects us all; let’s solve it today so our children won’t have to deal with it tomorrow. If you see people dumping rubbish please do not approach them, just take note of their number plates and report them to police. If we all work together we can reduce this sort of behaviour happening in our region.

Colour best medicine for winter blues

ABOVE: NarcissusErlicheer (double daffodil). LEFT: Acacia Pycnantha (golden wattle).

August Ramblings from the Amateur Gardener Some gardens are beautiful in winter, and with careful planning, all gardens can be bright and cheery in August. The flowers of the Almond variety, CPS, which is the main variety grown on the Northern Adelaide Plains, are usually at their peak in the second week of August, heralding the imminent arrival of Spring. Look out for these pretty flowering trees if you travel along the Northern Expressway, now aptly named, The AMATEUR Fatchen Expressway. GARDENER Under deciduous trees is a good place to start planning for a flower show. The Hellebore, which is more commonly called the Christmas Rose or Lenten Rose, indicating it comes from the northern hemisphere, needs to be planted in such a position as they need the shade in summer but the sun in winter and flowers in AMATEUR shades of white, green, red, GARDENER pink and purple. Some prolific flowering bulbs also for under planting are the Narcissus Erlicheer, which as its names suggests, is an early flowering fragrant daffodil which can bear six to eight clusters of soft cream to ivory flowers on the one stem. The snowflake, or Leucojum Vernum, has small, white bell-shaped, nodding flowers

G

which are tipped with small green dots. T The Ipheon Uniflorum, or the blue spring star flower, which, as the name suggests, flowers with small star shaped flowers is also lovely. The Ipheon will flower until the warm weather comes and the green strappy foliage lasts much longer. These three bulbs are extremely easy to grow but if you need to contain them it may be best to plantEthem in pots. Remember to fertilise with a water soluble fertiliser when the first of the leaves appear and to allow the leaves to naturally die down. Look out for these bulbs next year in autumn ready to plant for a winter display. The beautiful hardy Japonica, Flowering Quince, or Chaenomeles Japonica, is a welcome sight in August.

The flowers appear on the older bare stems in shades from white, pale pink to red, however in summer it is a nondescript plant with small green leaves. Clipping the new summer growth to make a more formal shrub will enable the flowers to be easily seen on the bare winter stems. However, the showiest and most beautiful of the suggestions for G August flowering goes to our very own National Floral Emblem, The Golden Wattle- Acacia Pycnantha. This tree comes in our national colours of green and gold with the symbolic meanings of remembrance, reflection and unity. How appropriate for this month of August with the Olympic Games being held and for our very own region, which pulled together so strongly after the terrible bush fires. Golden wattles may grow to eight metres, or 26 feet, but are usually smaller with the only draw-back being that the life span may be as short as 15 years. The long brown seed pods appear in late spring to early summer, with the blooms being a haven for some native birds such as the Honeyeaters. Enjoy the delights of August that our humble gardens can give to us.

STEVEN GRIFFITHS MP Member for Goyder

It can be difficult to remain positive amid daily media headlines of tragedy and unrest. But in such times I find it more important than ever to stay connected with your community, and get out and about and share and listen to concerns and ideas. I was particularly pleased to attend the Two Wells Lions Club Charter Dinner on 2 July, a celebration of the power of positive thinking community members gathering together to make a difference to their home district. This new Lions club is an asset to the community and I look forward to hearing about future projects. With the recent wild winter weather, I also acknowledge the efforts of our emergency services personnel, including SES, CFS, SA Ambulance and Police, as well as SA Power Networks staff. The Goyder Electorate office continues to be kept busy with people seeking assistance with a wide range of concerns, including health services and public housing, police numbers, communication, scams, road signage, lack of road maintenance, and the unacceptable above-CPI rises in the Emergency Services levy, the Natural Resources Management Levy and, most recently, the Solid Waste levy. At a recent meeting with the President and the CEO of the Local Government Association, the solid waste levy figured prominently. It’s near doubling came as a shock and a big disappointment, as again the Labor Government is demonstrating that they will take money from whatever source they can. I accept the levy when the money from it is used to fund waste disposal programs and initiatives, but I object strenuously when much of the levy just goes straight to the Government Treasury. Of real concern, too, is the rising cost of electricity and I’m sorry to say there is no easy answer or quick fix. Disconnections are occurring in the thousands as low income families struggle to afford one of society’s basic needs. The State Liberals are drafting a Bill to ensure broader implications to the electricity market are considered for all future wind farm approvals but that is just one answer and it can’t undo the damage already being felt by poor Labor policy on this issue over the last decade. Whilst the 2016/17 State Budget is yet to be reviewed in Parliament at the time of writing this article, my initial thoughts are I am pleased about the investment in science and technology in some schools (including Two Wells Primary) but I am concerned by the forecast job growth of only 0.75% compared with 1.8% nationally. For assistance with any State matter, don’t hesitate to contact me and my staff at the Goyder electorate office at Maitland; the office is open 9 am – 5 pm, Monday to Friday.

Netball program net, set, done Thunderbirds player and NetSetGo ambassador, Sam Poolman, helped wrap up another successful NetSetGo program at Two Wells last month. Sam led the girls through some fun games on Thursday July 7 and was happy to pose for photos after the session, with each participant given a NetSetGo bouncy ball to take home. Sam then stayed on and led around 20 junior netballers through a variety of running, ball, and defending drills, with senior players also tapping into her extensive experience at the end of the session. This year 23 young girls took part in the club’s annual NetSetGo program, which focuses on introducing basic netball skills through a range of fun, engaging and hands on games and activities. The 10-week program, led by Bec O’Brien and Michelle Dimasi, and with

Bec O’Brien reports:

the support of junior players Stephanie Seres, Hayley Duthie, Kaitlyn O’Brien and Zoe Williams, started on May 5. While the program wrapped up on with Sam’s visit, the young netballersto-be were also treated to a sausage sizzle, thanks to the generosity of Ken McAuley, who kindly donated the sausages and drinks for all the kids (and manned the BBQ too!). Thanks Ken. The club was also very supportive of the program and once again staged a wonderful presentation tea at the club on June 30. For the first time this was a shared event with the Auskick participants and was a lovely way to celebrate the success of both programs and also promote positive friendships within the club.

Ladies day out at the footy

It was Ladies Day at Two Wells Football and Netball Sporting Club on Saturday July 23. Mirroring the popular ladies day at the races idea, the club put up shade tents, marked off an area and it was entry only to those with the hot ticket. Ladies dressed up and enjoyed drinks, nibbles and fun games throughout the afternoon. Coming up on the club’s social calendar is the last home game celebration with a theme of 1st Letter Dress Up on August 6, which should be a cracker. Then, the club will hold its major fundraiser, the “200 Club” on Saturday August 13. This exclusive event will see tickets capped and every ticket has the chance to win thousands in cash prizes. Tickets are $100, including a cocktail dinner and live music but there are only 200 available so get in quick and don’t miss out. Contact Kate Lange

Mel Bowman, Sharon, Melanie Ladhams, Lauren Henderson & Alana Deleso. on 0400 991 719 or Francis Pellizzari on 0417 816 644 for more information. Finally the club will celebrate the end of another season with its annual presentations. For senior members this will be the popular Redlow Event, set for Friday September 16 and for junior members, their presentation is on Sunday September 18. Visit the club’s Facebook page for more details, all the goss around the club and lots of action photos from throughout the season.

Triple M hosted their Thursday Rush Hour, with Andrew Jarman and Dale Lewis, from the club’s oval, and Channel Seven broadcast their sport’s segment from the venue. Local Adelaide radio personality and former football celebrity, Mark Soderstrom, was also keen to lend a hand to the Angle Vale Owls, and took to the field with the A grade side on Saturday, hop-

This week has been a great opportunity to promote the club, and encourage more people to come out and play for Angle Vale.” – Angle Vale president, Trevor Spong to put a decent score on the board, let alone muster a win. Club President, Trevor Spong, attributes this to the age of the club, “we’re a young club; we’ve only been around since 1998” he quips. “This week has been a great opportunity to promote the club, and encourage more people to come out and play for Angle Vale.”

Unfortunately, the Owls still exist nocturnally within their new association suffering a 336-point loss, however with strong junior sides within the club, it is only time before a competitive and experienced senior team soar into the ranks of the APFL and ruffle the feathers of the already established clubs.

The 2016 footy season has turned out to be a challenging one for the TWFC. Injuries have decimated the senior teams with season ending injuries to A graders Braidon Osborne, Nathan Rose and vice captain Sam O’Brien. Compounding this has been extended long term lay-offs to Anthony Pontt, Andrew Hardiman, Lee Henderson, Josh Pellizzari, Tallan Leighton, Peter Seccafien and Harry Gameau, which has seen 31 different players being used through the A grade games. As a result, the A grade finds

itself sitting in 4th position (as of July 29) with 7 wins and 6 losses, and the B grade in 6th position on the ladder with a 5:8 win/loss ratio. The B grade consistently finds itself having to play up to four Under 17’s each week to get a side on the park. The injuries have given rise to the likes of Noah Barnett, Jamie Humprys and Tyler Morrison, all of whom have graduated from last years Under 17’s side. With two games remaining and many of the injured players returning we look to consolidate our position in the top four. Hopefully we’ll find some good form in the semi-finals and push on to the Preliminary final, which this year is to be played at Two Wells Oval.

Triple-M rocks Owls

But Channel 7 and Triple M put on a show at Angle Vale LEFT: Channel 7 personality, Mark ‘Soda’ Soderstrom, (third from left) pulled on the Angle Vale guernsey in the A grade clash against Mallala on Saturday. Unfortunately, Soderstrom only lasted a half and largely looked uncomfortable, having retired from footy some 15 years ago. Fellow Triple M and Channel 7 star, Dale Lewis, also a former footballer, took the smarter approach and was assistant coach to Angle Vale’s Bill Fuller. Mallala won the match more than comfortably but the media personalities drew a crowd to the game and there were plenty of festivities for families to enjoy. PHOTO: NATALIE CENTENERA

SPECIAL REPORT: P18

Two Wells golf open day The weather forecast of strong winds, hail, and heavy rain sadly was correct, proving again to test the resolve of the 31 golfers who arrived at Two Wells for the 2016 Open Day on Sunday July 24. Two squalls hitting the course during the Open proved it extremely tough but all battled on to the finish. The bursts of no rain and warm sunshine certainly a highlight and offered some respite for all out on the course. The Captain welcomed all and thanked them for supporting the event again. The Sponsors were also acknowledged for their generous contributions again and the prizes reflected their com-

Sponsors for this day included Noahs Veterinary Clinic, Coopers Brewery, Bendigo Bank, Paul and Debby Shields, Russell Grigg, Drummonds Golf, Two Wells Tavern, and Lower Light Hotel. Dr Chris Girling held on despite a good fight from John Nairn to win the Open A Grade Championship with 77 off the stick with John finishing one shot behind with 78. Captain Paul Shield thanked the local members for their combined assistance on and off the course in preparation for the Open, which also contributed to a great day with all enjoying the meal and soup after the round. Well done to the ladies who assisted in the kitchen and made us all smile. Despite the loss of up to a dozen trees last Tuesday and the breakdown of the slasher, the members were able to clear away falling trees, limbs and clean up the course. Well done team. n Photos & report page 19
