Public support swings vote for tank history of a leopard

AN historic Leopard tank will be rolling into Two Wells after District Council of Mallala councillors last month approved of its placement at Two Wells war memorial. The massive nine-metre tank was supported by 120 people out of 142 in a survey conducted by District Council of Mallala (DCM). Councillors voted eight to three in favour of a motion to confirm placement of the tank, conditional to the RSL or Department of Defence covering all costs associated with the placement, including the concrete plinth. Most councillors chose to support the motion due to the overwhelming support from the community through consultation. However, Lewiston councillors Duncan Kennington, Karen McColl and Tom Summerton concluded they would not support the tank’s placement for various reasons. “I think it’s an eyesore,” said Cr Kennington. “I think it’s a huge, ugly symbol of violence and I don’t think that’s exactly what Two Wells needs.”

Cr McColl said her concerns were about recent servicemen who, she believed, “don’t want constant reminders of war.” Other councillors spoke negatively about the tank, but voted differently. “To put it there is going to detract from the war memorial,” Lewiston Cr Anne Picard said. “The war memorial currently really looks nice and is a credit to the people who have done it and who look after it... and they are going to put a heap of scrap metal next to it,” Cr Picard said. “I think this thing is an absolute abomination.” “It should be somewhere else.” However, Cr Picard then voted in favour of the motion. Cr Wasley said he was not personally in favour of the tank, but was representing the majority of the public. “It leaves me no choice other than to listen to what the people want,” said Cr Wasley. Two Wells RSL members said the tank hopefully would arrive by the middle of the year.

n Leopard tanks first arrived in Australia from Germany in 1976, ending a selection and trial process (against the US M60[4] series) which started in 1971 when the army decided it needed a replacement for its British Centurions, which had served since 1952. Ninety were delivered – but they never fired a shot in anger for Australia, being used only in exercises. In March 2004, it was decided by the government to replace the Leopard with reconditioned US M1A1 Abrams. The Leopard 1 was operated by the 1st Armoured Regiment and was officially withdrawn from service in July, 2007. It was designed and produced in Germany, first entering world service in 1965. Just under 6,500 were built. It served in wars in Bosnia and Afghanistan but since 1990 was relegated to secondary roles in most armies. Weighing 42 tonnes and 9.5 metres long, 3.37 metres wide and 2.62 metres high, the Leopard carried a crew of four (commander, gunner, driver, radio operator/ loader). Its primary armament was a 105mm rifled gun, with 17 rounds in the turret and 42 in the hull. Machine guns and smoke dischargers were also used. Power came via a 10 cylinder, 37.4 litre Daimler Benz diesel engine, developing 610kW, driving through an automatic gearbox with four forward and two reverse gears. Carrying 950 litres of fuel, its range was 600km on road (450km cross country). Maximum speed was 65 km/h. – Source: Wikipedia.

Do councillors have ‘conflict of interest’? READING the “letters to the editor” in the January Echo (referring to council voting on the proposed Two Wells town development) leads to the following questions. Is it not a conflict of interest

we have two councillors who own rental properties/businesses in Two Wells? And will they lose rent if the new development goes ahead? I too have been to council meetings and am shocked at

how our “elected” members carry on. I have walked out in disgust. They are only worried about themselves and hide behind the “I’m doing what’s best for the community” chant.

I’d like some development to go ahead in Two Wells as we do need extra work places to employ the growing numbers of youth in our community. Michael Catanzarit, Two Wells

Once again, residents of the District Council of Mallala (DCM) are being compromised by six councillors who successfully outmanoeuvred the remainder of the councillors at the council meeting on December 20, by putting a stop to future road reconstruction and road building by DCM. Evidently these six councillors have a vastly superior knowledge and expertise on all aspects of road building and repair and do not agree with

the Australian road construction guidelines and the expert knowledge of council staff who have dealt for many years with roads within the floodplain, which of course covers a vast amount of the Mallala council area. In this latest act of deliberate delaying tactics they have managed to delay and possibly lose the grant funding available for road construction projects. This funding amounted to $270,000. Without this money, our council staff would be un-

able to continue with any more road building projects. It is due to these six councillors, work on the Gawler River road has been delayed and possibly stopped. These are the same councillors who went to the public meeting in Two Wells for the new development, saw how much support it had – and then voted against it when the motion came up in a general council meeting. How many Mallala council

residents are in the same position as I was until recently; completely unaware the majority of major decisions affecting council area are, in fact, the result of motions put forward at meetings and voted on by the 11 councillors? Hence, a lot of complaints and comments directed at council employees are very unfair and should be directed at certain councillors who must take responsibility for their decisions. wo Wells RSL members and locals attended a luncheon on Australia Day to honour secretary, John Allen, who was presented with a Certificate of Achievement and Australia Day medal from the National Australia Day council. RSL State representative, Graham Nybo, presented the award to John, who had no knowledge of the presentation until it took place. He was was overwhelmed by the honour. John has been one of the backbones of the club since its inception some four years ago, putting in many hours separate from actual office hours and putting a great deal of effort into its success. One of John’s initiatives was the work put into gaining a Leopard tank for Two Wells war memorial park, which is expected within the next six months. He began this quest about four years ago and was extremely pleased when the last obstacle of community acceptance via council was overcome. He has been part of the RSL for many years, beginning at Salisbury where he was history officer, then on to the committee from where he was elected first as acting secretary and then secretary. When Tony Flaherty formed the idea of starting a club in Two Wells, he was first to join and since has held the role of secretary. John said the reason he stayed was the mateship, camaraderie and fun – and the job itself which gives him a buzz. “Just to feel you’re contributing and making something work is a great feeling,” he said. President Tony Flaherty said John was very deserving of the award. “John is a good secretary, worker and friend to the whole RSL. The honour is well deserved as he is everybody’s friend, does such a great job by welcoming all who enter and we are extremely proud to have him.” “As far as our RSL is concerned, as secretary his job is to make the RSL work.” “From the members’ point of view, he is likeable, dependable, our historian ... everything an RSL club would want in a secretary.” After the presentation John’s wife Linda said: “He puts his heart and soul into the club.”

DENIS AND MARIA PELLIZZARI

here is no doubt Denis and Maria Pellizzari have spent much of their life in Two Wells, helping other people and numerous community organisations. From humble beginnings, Denis and Maria both migrated to Australia from Italy when they were children. Denis, aged 7, began his Australian life in Karoonda in August of 1949, where he said he was warmly welcomed by all the locals. “We couldn’t speak any English when we arrived,” he said. “But because of the warm welcome the Mallee people gave us, we were able to speak English by Christmas.” The family lived for five years in tin sheds with no electricity, giving Denis a sense of appreciation for his life in Two Wells. Maria, who arrived in Australia as a baby, has enjoyed the Two Wells lifestyle with her parents, who have been involved with market gardening and glasshouses in the area for many years. In 1966 the pair married at St Michael College, the school Denis had attended. A retired banker, Denis now hones his finance skills on helping a very large part of the community. “I’m a voluntary auditor for more than 30 organisations,” he said. And a very sought-after auditor, at that. “When people call, I tell them Denis has retired,” Maria explains. “But they keep ringing until Denis answers the phone, and he always tells them he will do it,” she said. Denis also has served Two Well Football Club for 30 years as treasurer and been on the steering committee for the building of the Two Wells community centre and Catholic Church, as well as Xavier and Thomas Moore colleges. While three children and now six grandchildren have kept the couple busy over the years, both are nonetheless dedicated to volunteering. Maria also spent

more than 20 years committing her time to Mallala ambulance, which she said was rewarding and sometimes challenging. But it was the special needs of the couple’s eldest child, Bernie, 43, which inspired them to facilitate a kindergarten in the town many years ago. Along with Franci Brechin and other dedicated locals, Maria and Denis opened Two Wells Kindergarten in about 1971. After the community renovated the old building (now the Mallala council office in Two Wells), Maria and Denis operated it for about five years before the Kindergarten Union took over. “We saw a need for it, and of course Bernie needed help,” Maria said.“It was one of those things where the community really came together to help out.” In 2010, Denis was the longest participating member of Two Wells Melodrama group, having had roles in the past 28 performances. But he said his time had come to retire. Maria has donated her cooking skills to the melodrama group, with audience members spoiled every year by her ability in the kitchen. She’s also an associate member of Two Wells Red Cross

and cooks Italian meals for Fred’s Van every month, which distributes meals to needy people. And locals will be happy to hear Maria is organising a pasta night at Two Wells football clubrooms with Red Cross to raise funds for the Queensland floods. Denis received an award for 25 years of service as a Justice of the Peace, as well as a Federation Award for services to the community. But his biggest disappointment has been the lack of development in Two Wells. “I’ve been going to meetings for the past 30 years regarding a shopping centre, and I can’t believe still nothing has been done.” “Other than what the community has built in Two Wells, there has been no new buildings in the town since I arrived,” he said. “We don’t seem to be able to get anything through council that will be an asset to the town.” He said this was very frustrating, but also drew attention to the fact infrastructure builds a town while people build a community. “We enjoy Two Wells. We have a lot of friends here and that’s the essence of it.”

After months of deliberation, District Council of Mallala (DCM) finally approved a playground in Lewiston at 210 Hayman road. DCM councillors carried five recommendations regarding the Lewiston playground at its meeting on Monday, January 24. The recommendations included: • Noting the fact consultation should have included a letter drop; Council to work with local residents to resolve concerns; Council to review its consultation policy, and Council to amend the standard layout to include reference to community consultation. The final recommendation for council to confirm its decision to construct a playground at 210 Hayman road was carried nine votes to two. Council received $58,000 funding through the Federal government’s Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, which had to be extended due to residents’ objections. Residents of Lewiston objected to the siting due to the poor consultation and lack of knowledge about the placement of a playground near several residential properties. However, other locations in Lewiston were found inappropriate for various reasons, including possible sites being reserved for other purposes or dedicated to flora and fauna and containing endangered species. Council CEO, Charles Mansueto, said council was ready to move forward. Construction should be completed by the end of March.

It’s farewell as ‘Lady Di’ delivers her last load bronte hewett reports: ‘Lady Di’ has decided to hang up the truck keys for the last time. Known in the male-dominated trucking industry as ‘Lady Di’, Diane Meaney has spent the past 30 years as a rose amongst the thorns. “Quite a few of them refer to me as Lady Di down at the Port Adelaide silos,” she said. But last season was the final time Di would cart for the annual grain harvest. “I feel like I could keep going, but you’ve got to stop at some point,” the sprightly grandmother from Two Wells said. Truck driving has been a part of Di’s life since her late husband, Malcolm, introduced her to the industry. Her personal trucking quest began after Malcolm poked his eye out in an accident about 30 years ago, and Di had to help drive on the fuel run to Moomba. It has been a juggling act over the years for Di, who has raised two daughters, Marie and Chelsea, and a son, Daniel, throughout the couple’s trucking business venture. “I had to be a mum as well as a truck driver,” she said.

“The kids loved it. They used to come on big trips all across Australia when they were little,” Di explains. Other than harvest, Di has also done a lot of driving to Moomba, the Northern Territory and other corners of Australia. Malcolm sadly passed away about four years ago, and Di has kept up the trucking legacy with help from her son Daniel. Di said there were a few things she wouldn’t miss. “I won’t miss sitting in queues at the silos,” she said. “Or having a blowout in the middle of nowhere. Or being in the middle of a paddock on a stinking hot day with northerly winds.” “Oh and 2am finishes with a 5am start the next morning.” However, the memories are mostly fond. “The highlight would be all the wondering people I’ve met,” she said. “Not only all the farmers, but also the harvest workers and other truck drivers from far and wide.” “I’ll also miss the marketing side of it,” she said. Di said she would miss all of her cus-

tomers and also the unpredictable nights. “I’ve had some interesting experiences,” she said. When her youngest daughter, Chelsea, graduated from high school, Di was in the middle of harvest. In a quick dash from Port Adelaide silos to the Adelaide Convention Centre, Di exchanged her boots for high heels and a nice frock for a couple of hours, only to return to her trucking attire later in the night. A few hours later she was bogged in the middle of a paddock in Avon. “The farmer had to use a tractor to pull the truck out of the sand. We didn’t finish until 4am!” And the most memorable day was when Di first used a roll top tarp. “When I first got a trailer with a roll top tarp, it was absolutely wonderful,” she said. “Before that we had to climb on the truck and manually roll the tarp.” Filling in time won’t be a problem either, with Di ready to tackle a list of things-to-do. And collating a book of trucking memoirs is still on that list. “I’m still working on it,” Di said.

What does a sustainable ecosystem look like and where would we find one? Well you don’t have to look far. The planting of native indigenous plants throughout the district is one first steps to a sustainable ecosystem. As land owners we have the capacity to develop and carry on with the improvements from the previous custodians of our district. Planting native plants has an impact on so many of the attributes that we take for granted. A friend of mine who purchased his property in the mid 80s denuded (bare) of trees and shrubs, has created his own forest and believes it’s like a giant aviary. By creating your own piece of paradise you will attract an unlimited number of bird species to your garden, and if birds and insects are using our gardens, what species are they and what is the relationship between them and the local biota. It is possible to view your parcel of land as an ecosystem. We don’t see much of what really happens in an ecosystem, either because we don’t know what we are looking at or it’s happening at a micro scale. Monitoring of bird fauna and recording other data will provide you with a starting point of what ecological value your property represents within the Mallala district. A few tips on how to identify birds: Size: try to relate the size of the bird to a bird you know, for example a sparrow or magpie. Stand out features: does it have a long curved bill, crest on its head, long tail, long or short legs? Colour: note colour of bird’s bill, feathers, eyes and legs. Behaviour: what is it doing; flying, perching, running or feeding? Is it alone or in a flock? Is it slow or quick? Location: where is it? Is it in your garden or in the bush, or along a road side? Marks: are there any striking marks on the bird? Are there marks around eyes, mask, wing or tail spots or noticeable stripping? Group: can you recognize it to a general group of birds, for example, Wader, Honey eater, Parrot, Bird of prey? Sounds: alarm calls, songs, in flight. Crested pigeon and Magpies have a distinctive noise when they fly. This is caused by the air as it travels over their wings. There are great range of bird books around, but remember if you want to identify birds within your area select books that recognize birds within your district. I believe it would be great if we, as a community, could monitor the types of bird species that visit our region. Adam a worthy winner Given the busy year for Two Wells Country Fire Service (CFS), Adam Harris’s ongoing commitment and dedication to serving the community gave plenty of grounds for selection as District Council of Mallala’s 2010 citizen of the year. Despite attending a majority of the district’s 180 emergency call outs in 2010, the modest Two Wells captain said there were probably more deserving recipients out there. “I was very surprised and shocked when I was told,” he said. “I thought there must be other people who deserve it more.”

But other brigade members saw a deserving recipient in him and put the successful nomination forward, to be presented to Mr Harris on Australia Day. “I didn’t expect to be nominated to start with, so it’s a real honour and surprise to win,” Mr Harris said. A local since aged four, Mr Harris said a very supportive wife and family helped make his sometimes difficult role of brigade captain achievable. He said his roles in the Two Wells community required a bit of juggling . “It’s all a bit of a juggling act. I’ve got to be able to manage a

range of different personalities and how they handle different emergencies,” he said. “But all in all, I enjoy the responsibilities and challenges it gives.” Mr Harris said the most challenging aspect of his role included the emotional effects when attending car accidents or where children were involved. “I also went to the Victorian bush fires and it was intense to see the scale of devastation and loss of life,” he said. After joining the Two Wells CFS aged 14, Mr Harris has not looked back. Now at just 30, Mr Harris

holds the position of captain with a great deal of pride, stability and consistency. However, he said if there was ever a moment he felt down, the brigade would always bring him back up. “The brigade keeps me going,” he said. And he said the best reward was when all the training paid off. “The most rewarding thing is when we all get it right at the right time,” he said. “When we do a good job – that’s the best reward.” “And of course helping the community and public in their time of need.”

Residents are reminded that the council meetings occur each third Monday of the month at 7pm in the Council Chambers at Mallala. After the initial formalities of the meeting have been dealt with then Open Forum commences. All residents are welcome to speak for up to five minutes on any issue of relevance. On most occasions some residents make use of this opportunity which is helpful to Councillors who have to make decisions on your behalf. Residents may then wish to remain to observe the meeting and the decisions being made. It’s your council and all decisions made affect you to some degree. There was a good turn out at the Council’s Australia Day function on January 26. Doubtless more detail and pictures will appear in this issue. Two ladies were naturalised at the event thus becoming fair dinkum Aussies. A public meeting has been held to gauge residents’ opinions regarding the Parham camping ground. The meeting was well attended with more than 60 people present. The overwhelming feeling of the meeting was that the camping ground should remain where it is. The last meeting of council confirmed the commitment to build a children’s playground in Lewiston at 210 Hayman Road. This project has been funded mainly by the federal government and at last the hundreds of children of Lewiston will have a playground within easy reach. We again urge residents to contact councillors concerning issues of relevance. We are here to represent you and together we can make the district an even better place for us and for future generations. Child care first for Virginia Renovations are nearing completion for the opening of Virginia’s first childcare centre. Families in the Virginia district will benefit from the new child care service in the town. Experienced childcare centre director, Tammy Hall, who owns another centre in Paralowie, has ventured into the Virginia area after noticing a void in the community. “We noticed there was no childcare service in the town, so thought we might be able to service the community,” she said. Virginia Grove Child Care and Early Learning Centre will build their services around customer demands, including before and after school care,

the community to use,” she said. Although the Christmas season seems a long time ago, the Uniting Church community couldn’t let an opportunity pass without saying a big thank you to the Two Wells community for their generosity and support of the church’s Christmas activities, both financially and for great attendance at the Fun 4 Kidz 2 event. Rae Wilson said members had been kept very busy during all the various events. But she said fundraising efforts had already been put towards good use. From the sale of pancakes and hamburgers, the church was able to raise and distribute $585 to the wider community. The ladies and gentlemen of the Adult Fellowship were also pleased with their total of about $450, some of which went

SEVERAL meetings are being held this month to discuss how local marine parks could best be zoned for conservation and community use. The local group for Upper Gulf St Vincent will meet on Thursday, February 17 from 3pm–7pm in Port Wakefield. Chairperson of Mallala Foreshore Advisory Committee, Barb Reid, said she would be attending and urged recreational fisherman to take the opportunity to submit comments or concerns to the local Marine Park Local Advisory Group (MPLAG). “This is the last opportunity for recreational fishers to make comments if they want their wishes addressed,” she said. “Everybody has been given this opportunity, so if they don’t use it to suggest changes, they can’t really grizzle if the changes aren’t addressed,” she said. Upper Gulf St Vincent MGLAG will meet in a workshop format, so members can consider community feedback received since their last meeting in November. Members will gather at Eagles Sports and Community Centre for the meeting, and community members are welcome to observe but are urged to share any key information before the meeting. Maps showing preliminary sanctuary zones have been issued to stimulate local discussion and gain feedback from the community. The community-based process seeks to ensure people most affected by marine parks can have their say in draft management plans. Plans will be issued for public consultation late in 2011. Animal management still an issue

The long process of forming the Animal Management Plan Advisory Committee (AMPAC) is closer to fruition. District Council of Mallala (DCM) is seeking expressions of interest from community members who would like to become a member. The process has stalled on several occasions due to council’s caretaker

period last year. There are six vacancies to fill, including a veterinarian within council area, a greyhound breeder/trainer that is professionally recognised, a professional dog breeder, two independent owners of other animals and one farming property owner who deals with the farming of animals such as sheep, cows or pigs.

Members will be required to attend regular bi-monthly meetings and special meetings as required. The committee is run on a voluntary basis with meetings varying from one to two hours. Interested people need to provide the category of membership, details of any interests, experience and or qualifications relevant to the role

and proof of any requirements. A copy of the Terms of Reference for the committee can be downloaded from council’s website at www. mallala.sa.gov.au. Expressions of interest and accompanying information will be presented to a council meeting in March 2011 and may form part of an agenda available to the public.

‘Silence’ is golden at Two Wells craft shop The crafty volunteers at the Two Wells Craft Shop will be holding “silent auctions” to encourage sales with a difference. From Tuesday, February 1, one or more items have been on display in the foyer of the Craft Shop. Locals and visitors are invited to go in and view as many items as they are interested in. Carft shop volunteer Judi Frost said the process was relatively simple. “If you are interested in the item, you are invited to bid for it on the form provided,” she said. “Your bid can be an amount of your choice, bearing in mind another bidder may improve on your bid should they also desire the item.” The highest bidder will be able to purchase the item for their stated price. It presents a great opportunity to pick up crafty merchandise for bargain prices. But from time to time some items may start with a reserve amount. The duration time of the silent auction will be shown on the bidding sheet provided and will normally be about two weeks. The items will be different and will range in prices and style to suit the community’s desires. “We hope to provide a wide variety of goods,” Judi said.

WE experienced first hand what real crime scene investigation is all about – not just what we see on TV – when Senior Constable Andrew Murphy, of Elizabeth LSA Crime Scene Investigations, attended for Neighbourhood Watch’s first meeting for 2011 on Tuesday, February 8. New Meals on Wheels committee After a ‘wheelie’ busy year, Two Wells Meals on Wheels branch held a combined AGM and Christmas morning tea on Tuesday, December 21 at the home of Malcolm and Judi Frost. Pamela Duncan was re-elected as

president/secretary and Judi Frost as treasurer. Lorraine Goss was elected as welfare officer. This position was previously held by Audrey Hart. Pamela thanked all committee members for their support during 2010

Model flyers look for air field

Concord Model Flying Club is looking for a new space to spread their wings. Their current site, near the corner of Gawler River and Heaslip roads, has become too restricted. Club member, Colin Parsons, said the club needed to find a more suitable field. “Ideally we would like a site within 15km of our existing field,” he said. The field would need about 150 x 150 metres plus an overfly area of 200 metres to the east, south and west and road access from the northern boundary. “Access to power and water would be

nice, but not essential. For safety, there should be a 500/750 metre buffer to houses and buildings,” Mr Parsons said. He said the club was very responsible and had been in existence for more than 20 years. “We have leased and maintained our current site for more than 15 years and look forward to obtaining a new long term site for our club,” he said. The club is not unfamiliar with relocation, having outgrown their premises on several occasions. Members are keen to continue their

hobby for the wide range of benefits it brings. “The skills gained from radio controlled model flying come not only by flying the models, but building, maintaining and repairing them as well,” Mr Parsons said. “Flying the aeroplanes and helicopters gets our members outdoors in the fresh air, develops complex eye to hand motor skills, as well as the potential for local, national and international competition,” he said. Mallala ambulance needs volunteers Mallala’s ambulance service is appealing to the local community for support to continue operating the valuable service. This mean anyone from the district, including Two Wells, Lewiston and other nearby areas. Ambulance SA Public Relations Officer, Lisa Morrison, said there were plenty of good reasons to join Mallala ambulance.

“The skills you’ll learn can literally save lives and make your own life much more fulfilling,” “This is something totally different from everyday life and the skills you develop could be needed at home, while playing sport or on holiday,” Ms Morrison said. The importance of local people servicing

Soaking up the sunshine... and meandering in the mangroves Two children discovered the mystery of the mangrove tree at Middle Beach on Friday, January 21. Northern and Yorke Natural Resource Management (NRM) regions were able to participate in a number of activities across the district in January. A ‘mangrove meander’ occurred at Middle Beach as part of a ‘Fun in the Sun’ council summer program. John and Kimberly Abdilla discovered the mysterious mangrove tree with Aleisa Lamanna, who is the Coast, Estuary and Marine Officer for Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges NRM Board. The tour included information about who lives in the mangroves and how the mangroves help save our shores from erosion. The children also learned why the trees

are so important to many marine animals as well as humans. ‘Fun in the Sun’ coastal council summer holiday program has been funded by the Australian Government and supported by District Council of Mallala and Wakefield Regional Council, as well District Councils of Barunga West, Copper Coast, Yorke Peninsula and Mount Remarkable. Other activities in the sun were held across the district, including a fishing program at Port Wakefield. ‘Fishing for the future’ aimed to teach people about the rules and regulations of fisheries while they participated in a virtual fishing game. There was an opportunity for participants to talk to South Australia fishcare volunteers or a fisheries officer.

Australia Day fun at the beach LOCALS celebrated Australia Day at Middle Beach throughout the afternoon, with events, barbecues and fun filling the beach. Egg and spoon races, beach fun run and tug-o-war were among the activities enjoyed by children and adults. The annual event again attracted a large crowd with a fun, family-friendly atmosphere.

Celebrating a centenary

Two Wells Football and Netball Club will celebrate 100 years in 2011, with plans already underway for celebrations on July 16. John Dawkins and Yolanda Cannizzaro are leading the organising committee for these celebrations, and any relevant information about the club’s history should be forwarded to them as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the club recently missed out on funding to upgrade the clubrooms, but committee members will continue to strive for this improvement in the future. A TWFNC social day was held at the home of Eddie and Kathy Stubing on Sunday, February 6.

Good year on and off the arena Last year was a very successful year for the Two Wells Equestrian and Pony Club, which continues to grow. The club had many new riders join up throughout the year and also held many successful shows and clinics, which helped raise money to keep the club going. These range from the show jumping day back in February, to the Christmas Hack Show last December. But according to TWEPC rider representative, Alyssa Betts, the club has been successful

elsewhere as well. “Our club has also had many riders do really well in other competitions, usually getting placed in the top 10, in ODEs or Dressage days,” she said. She said it was always easy to pick out the Two Wells members in their bright uniforms. “It’s always good to see the club represented well, in our bright red jumpers and saddle blankets.” It’s not just the riders who make the club what it is today, of course. It’s also the parents, and other non-riding

committee members who make all this success possible. Without them, it wouldn’t be possible to set up for competitions, or have someone instructing. Preseason football training got underway on January 12 with good numbers in attendance. Mark ‘Bugs’Thomson (pictured) was appointed the new A-grade coach at the end of last year with Neville ‘Cheeky’ Seccafien assisting.

He replaced Stephen Fitzgerald while Peter McMillan will coach B-grade for the second year. Any interested players are encouraged to go out for training on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6pm. At the club’s AGM, Jeff Moon was reelected president, Tanya Kent again filled the roles of treasurer and vice-president and Alison Goss remained secretary. Some new faces have joined the committee including James Williams, Jacob Hart, Andrea Humphrys, Neralie Wearn, Bronte Hewett and Di Hondow. Also on the committee for another year are Francis Pellizzari, Joe Cannizzaro, Lynette Seccafien, Tony Lange, Ben Harris, Eddie Stubing, Stacey Gameau and Tiffany Gameau. Two Wells netball club’s first training and sign up night was held on Wednesday, February 2. Any interested players should contact the club as soon as possible to ensure a place, as teams have filled quickly in recent years. Senior netball manager, Stacey Gameau said the club was looking forward to another good year. “We have exciting news that we have appointed a new A1 coach, Barry Seaman, who has a wealth of netball knowledge and experience,” Mrs

Gameau said. Barry has successful State League netball experience and successful Hills league and country experience. “We look forward to what he can bring to our club.” “We also have a few new committee members which will help us to be more organised and bring in some fresh ideas,” she said.

Netball pre-season

The first training was at 7pm on Wednesday, February 2. It was a sign up night and also an opportunity for players to meet Barry, with a strong turn out of new and returning players. The second training will be Wednesday, February 9, while the third and fourth trainings before the trials are Wednesday, February 16 and Monday, February 21. First grading trial: Wednesday, February 23. Second and final grading trial: Wednesday, March 2. Training will be Thursday or Tuesday during the season. Financial help available for sports people

Applications are now open for financial scholarships for sports coaches, officials or volunteers across the district. The scholarships, by the Office of Recreation and Sport, aim to support coaches and officials to attend courses and become better qualified and skilled. “Coaching can be a genuine career option, and it is important to support those who have aspirations to reach higher levels,” said Paul Anderson, executive director of

Office for Sport and Recreation. In 2010, two locals striving to coach at an elite level were awarded scholarships for their commitment to their chosen sports. Le-Anne Cummins, a netball coach from Kapunda and squash coach Lisa Thompson of Clare both received the Wendy Ey scholarship for women. Medley Day a big success By Gerry Goulter

Two Wells Bowling Club started the second half of the season by staging a Medley Tournament Day on Sunday, January 9. The club had the most entries from clubs for many years, with a total of 28 teams of four players, equalling 112 bowlers. As it was a Medley, teams had to play two games of fours and two games of pairs. Local clubs were well represented plus various clubs from around Adelaide and from the country area’s such as McLaren Vale, Murray Bridge and Freeling. The day was a big success and sponsored by Electrolux. The ladies of the club had a very busy time feeding 112 bowlers with lunch and afternoon tea and the bar personal were also kept very busy all day. For the tournament to be enjoyed, the grounds staff had to be congratulated for the standard of the playing surface which was fast and true. The team from the Tranmere Bowling Club were the overall winners on the day. The second half of the Pennant Season, which started on January 15, has

not been very successful after a very good first half. The ladies on a Thursday have had their matches cancelled because of high temperatures. The main problem for the poor start to the second half has been illness, holidays, work and two members leaving the club. The club, after a gradual build up, have gained entry to the premier divisions and also established positions in the metro divisions. The ladies are also struggling to field a couple of teams in their association. The club may need to reduce the number of teams fielded each week unless more support is gained from the area. The board management of the club is trying to get government sponsorship to convert the present bowling greens to a carpet surface. The enthusiasm of the club to change the surface is very strong as a groundsman with the special qualifications is not required to maintain the grounds which reduces costs. The message to the young and elderly of both genders is to get in touch with the club and discuss becoming a member.

Animal Management Plan Advisory Committee – Expressions of Interest The District Council of Mallala is seeking expressions of interest from persons who would like to become a member of its Animal Management Plan Advisory Committee to fill the following vacancies: • One (1) veterinarian who operates within the council area • One (1) Greyhound breeder/trainer that is professionally recognised (ie SA Greyhound Association Membership). • One (1) dog breeder who is professionally recognised (ie SACA Membership). • Two (2) independent owners of other animals e.g. cats, dogs, horses, goats etc • One (1) farming property owner who deals with the farming of animals e.g. sheep, cows, pigs etc.” The Committee holds regular bi-monthly meetings and special meetings from time to time as and when required. Meetings may vary from 1-2 hours and Committee Members will be expected to read all relevant background material and reports prior to the meetings. Participation on the Committee will be on a voluntary basis. Interested persons should provide the following information with their expression of interest: • The category of membership they are seeking; • Details of any interests, experience and or qualifications relevant to the role; • Proof demonstrating that they meet the requirements of the role (e.g. copy of SACA membership etc.) A copy of the Terms of Reference for the Committee can be downloaded from Council’s website at www.mallala.sa.gov.au or can be posted to you on request. The Committee has been established under Section 41 of the Local Government Act 1999 and acts as a reference group in the review of Council’s animal management plan required under the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995. The Plan will deal primarily with dogs, although other animals will also be considered. Expressions of interest and accompanying information will be presented to a Council meeting in March 2011 and may form part of an agenda available to the public. The tennis club of Two Wells has been busy over summer fundraising to get the club back on track. ‘Running with the Balls’ has been gaining momentum, and the big tennis ball roll will occur on Saturday, March 5 during the junior presentation. Christine Musolino said the club was hoping for some support in this fun initiative. “This is a unique tennis orientated fundraiser which is hoped to help with the club’s financial concerns,” she said.
