FRIDAY 18 / 6PM THE LEGEND OF bARNEY THOMSON 2015 / 15 / 96 mins

based on the literary classic by Thomas Hardy, Far From The Madding Crowd is the story of independent, beautiful and headstrong bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), who attracts three very different suitors: Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a sheep farmer, captivated by her fetching wilfulness; Frank Troy (Tom Sturridge), a handsome and reckless Sergeant; and William boldwood (Michael Sheen), a prosperous and mature bachelor. This timeless story of bathsheba’s choices and passions explores the nature of relationships and love. “It’s solid stuff; well played, affectionately told, and still stirring in its role reversals, both personal and political. Carey Mulligan captures the effervescent determination of Thomas Hardy’s literary heroine”.

A Taiwanese film staring Sihung Lung as Senior  Master Chef Chu who lives in a large house in Taipei with his three unmarried daughters, Jia-Jen, a  chemistry teacher converted to Christianity, Jia-Chien, an airline executive, and Jia-Ning, a student who also works in a fast food restaurant; each of whom  challenges any narrow definition of traditional  Chinese culture. Life in the house revolves around the ritual of an elaborate dinner each Sunday, and the love lives of all the family members; they negotiate the transition from traditional “father knows best” style to a new tradition which encompasses old values in new forms. Nominated for an Oscar, Golden Globe and bafta for best Foreign Language Film in 1995.

This comedy tells the tale of barney (Robert Carlyle), a hapless barber, mocked for being devoid of charm and ‘patter’; his mediocre, mundane life of plotting for a way up is about to be transformed, following  a typically incompetent fit of pique, when he  inadvertently stumbles into serial murder, and with  it headlong into the trail of a grotesque series of killings gripping Glasgow. He finds himself on the run from the bearish Detective Inspector Holdall  (Ray Winstone). With his sanity threatening to  unravel, barney fatefully turns to his domineering, emasculating mother, the formidable Glaswegian ‘good-time girl’, Cemolina (Emma Thompson).

A semi-fictional account of the life and journey of Nobel-Prize-winning Russian poet Josif brodsky,  written and directed by Andrey Khrzhanovsky.  brodsky, a Nobel laureate who was born in 1940, fled the Soviet Union in 1972. He once told a reporter that if he were to return , he’d do so without identifying himself. Khrzhanovsky imagines what the voyage would be like. Touring his old neighbourhood, the older brodsky recalls his youth in Leningrad following World War II. As brodsky becomes a young man and goes off to college, he learns about art and language; however, he also becomes aware of the oppressive nature of the Soviet regime, and he begins speaking out in favour of greater freedoms. “A Room And A Half is a cinematic masterpiece that brings fresh ideas from a wise old head to the big screen.”

Programmer Caleb wins an internal competition at the company where he works and is invited to spend a week at the mountain estate of the company’s owner, Nathan. On arrival, Caleb finds that the place is a state-of-the-art facility. Nathan gives him a  non-disclosure contract to sign. Then he explains that he is assigned to evaluate the reactions and emotions of artificial intelligence in a female body called Ava. Caleb interviews Ava, and she uses a power outage  to tell him that he should not trust Nathan. Along the way, Caleb is involved by Ava and plots a scheme to let her flee from the facility. Meanwhile Nathan tells him that he has been manipulated by Ava. Who is telling the truth?”Stylish, elegant, tense, cerebral, satirical and creepy. Garland’s directorial debut is his best work yet, while vikander’s bold performance  will short your circuits”

Nominated for five Oscars, four Golden Globes and eight baftas, this is a romantic comedy set in 1959, where a mysterious woman (Juliette binoche) moves with her young daughter into a small French village, where much of the community’s activities are  dominated by the local Catholic church. She sets up  a confectionery shop across the street from the house of worship -- shortly after the beginning of Lent. While the townspeople are supposed to be abstaining from worldly pleasures, vianne tempts them with  unusual and delicious chocolate creations. With the help of another new arrival in town, a handsome Irish Gypsy named Roux (Johnny Depp), she plans a “Grand Festival of Chocolate,” to be held on Easter Sunday.

Miss Julie depicts a fierce battle between a man and a woman, a struggle for power and dominance  enacted through a cruel and compulsive game of  seduction and repulsion. Set in a country estate in Ireland in 1880s.  Miss Julie (Jessica Chastian) and her father’s valet John (Colin Farell), dance and drink, charm and manipulate each other. She, all hauteur longing for abasement; he, polished but coarse - both united in mutual loathing and  attraction. by turns seductive and bullying, savage and tender, their intimacy leads to desperate plans and vision of a life together... Unsure if the morning brings hope or hopelessness, they find their escape  in a final act as sublime and horrific as anything in Greek tragedy. “Utterly mesmerising, emotionally brutal theatre…masterful performances…stunning and powerful” Huffington Post

When legendary Russian auteur Aleksei German died in 2013, he left behind this extraordinary final film, a phantasmagoric adaptation of the revered sci-fi novel by the Strugatsky brothers (authors of the source novel for Tarkovsky’s Stalker). Taking place  on the planet Arkanar, which is in the midst of its own Middle Ages, the film focuses on Don Rumata, one of a group of earth scientists who have been  sent with the proviso that they must not interfere  in the planet’s political or historical development. Treated by the planet’s natives as a kind of divinity, Don Rumata is both godlike and impotent in the  face of its chaos and brutality. “A monumental work from a monumental talent. Unmissable.”

‘71 takes place over a single night in the life of a young british soldier (Jack O’Connell) accidentally abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of belfast in 1971. Unable to tell friend from foe, and increasingly wary of his own comrades, he must  survive the night alone and find his way to safety through a disorientating, alien and deadly landscape. “A tense, gripping thriller that combines real-world relevance with high-concept entertainment. In a superb ensemble, O’Connell is outstanding”

The misadventures begin when Miles (Paul Giamatti), an un-recovered divorcé and would-be novelist with  a wine fixation, decides to gift old college buddy and washed-up actor Jack (Thomas Haden Church) with  a celebratory trip to the vineyards of the Santa Ynez valley the week before Jack’s wedding. The two couldn’t be an odder couple. Jack is an over-sexed charmer; Miles is a sad-sack worrier. Jack is looking for his “last taste of freedom”. And yet, as they make their way up the coast, Miles and Jack soon find themselves drowning in wine and women. both men career dangerously and comically toward mid-life crises. “This wonderfully satisfying study in human nature is funny and sad and profoundly entertaining from start to finish.”

Sixteen year old billie’s reluctant path to  independence is accelerated when her mother reveals plans for gender transition and their time together becomes limited to Tuesday afternoons. Filmed over the course of a year, once a week, every week (only on Tuesdays) these unique filmmaking rules bring  a rare authenticity to this emotionally charged story of desire, responsibility and transformation. Directed by Sophie Hyde, the Australian filmmaker who  won the World Cinema Dramatic award at last year’s  Sundance Film Festival. “One of the more  remarkable depictions to date of a transgender  person’s journey. Sensitively written and  naturalistically performed.”“A remarkably assured and striking debut” Screen International
