Designing by Theme Part IX By Arthur Navarrette

elcome to our March edition. Last month we examined the design challenges of this property, particularly a narrow yard and a high roof line which, together, made the yard seem out of balance. The design solution was to employ “trompe l’oeil,” which is essentially the art of visual deception. As an art, trompe l’oeil should be thought of as a tool in the designer’s toolbox, rather than a design style or design element. This is important because the same tool can be used to visually correct any number of extremes in spatial proportions. The implementation of visual deception would vary based on what you want to make the eye think it sees. Here, our goal was to create the fiction of a wider yard and a more pleasingly proportionate house. We achieved this by raising a 6 www.House2HomeShowcase.com – Sacramento
number of planter beds, including the one used for lawn. Before we begin to discuss the specific design elements of this project, I want to quickly review the importance of a landscape theme. Theme is both the unifying concept and the end goal of a landscape design. From Tropical, to Mediterranean, from Asian to Tuscan, themes are based on geographical regions. When expressed in design, the theme creates the look and/or feel of that region through the choices of hard and softscape, as well as features such as fountains. Because theme is foundational to design, it is one of the things that I discuss with clients during our first appointment. So if you are considering a landscape project, I encourage you to visit our website where you can see examples of a variety of themes. The project we are focused on here has a NorCal theme with Asian accents. The three pictures I have chosen for this month are close ups showing how we “tricked” the eye into thinking there was
greater depth and proportionate height. These help you see the benefit of raising the lawn, especially considering the height of the roof line. If we had kept the lawn at the existing level, it would “disappear” in relation to the house. Both the height and the weight of the blocks give the lawn area a larger presence. Think of it as high heels for the garden. The birch planter was built for similar effect. By raising it and creating a boulder planter, we elevate the tree and draw the eye. Birch trees are grown two ways, single trunk and multi trunked. We purposefully selected a multitrunked tree in order to create a larger presence. As an interesting side note, the birch is typically valued for its white bark and yellow fall foliage. However I selected it for its habit of growth. It is very vertical, much more vertical in height than in width, making it a great candidate for this location. As the birch matures it will help visually reduce the roof line. The last plant is a Weeping Atlas Cedar, as it is commonly known. It has grown well and represents one of the Asian accents of the yard. One of the reasons for its placement was to stop the eye from looking back into the alcove of the home, and it does that job quite well. Please keep in mind that these and the other plants are going into their third year of growth. If you scanned our QR code last month, then much of what I have already shared has been a review. And for those of you that have not taken advantage of scanning the QR code or going to the YouTube address, let me encourage you to do so because, without the limits of word count, I am able to cover projects in greater detail. Before I close, I do want to speak to those of you who are vegetable gardeners. March is still a little early to plant tomatoes, unless you are able to protect them from the cold nights that this month is prone to have. It is, however, a great time to plant other vegies that enjoy cooler temperatures—especially carrots, spinach, broccoli, sweet chard, and lettuce varieties. These can be started now and harvested prior to summer heat. Before planting, check the soil about a shovel’s depth for the European Grub. If you have had them before, you will know what I mean. The European Grub is clear white and feeds on the roots of the developing vegetables. These need to removed by hand to avoid using chemicals. Until next month, Good Gardening.
Let’s Talk PLANTS™
In the same way that web videos allow me to discuss projects in greater detail, it also allows me to provide more information about unusual plants like Cedrus Atlantica Glauca Serpentine. Commonly called Weeping Atlas Cedar, this dynamic tree makes a strong statement in a landscape. To learn about its growing habits and the landscape themes it best compliments, scan the QR code below or use the web link address.
