Artists draw the line BY JULIE-ANN ELLIS he Lines in the Sand Arts Festival was a free, four-day celebration of art and nature, featuring children’s workshops, ephemeral art displays, talks and musical performances involving 15 artists. The family-friendly event, held in the winter school holidays, was attended by Island and visiting artists, the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community, residents and visitors. In the Waste Not Want Not three-day workshop, led by Anaheke Metua, participants collected natural and manmade materials from the local environment before being taught to weave them into elaborate and beautiful pieces. with the help of local Cyril Campbelle, led children in the creation of art on the beach, using sand, sticks and rakes. Sharon Jewell’s workshop, Little Boat, taught children (and some parents and grandparents) how to build little boats using natural materials and fibres. Straddie became the canvas for artists Jill Chism, from North Queensland, and Sharon Jewell, from Russell Island, Caitlin Halsall, from the Redlands and Michael Bulloch, from Point Lookout, who created ephemeral installations at Frenchman’s Reserve, Camel Head, and on the Gorge Walk. Dunwich artist Craig Tapp created larger than life artworks on South Gorge Beach and Cylinder Beach,
using natural ochres collected from Minjerribah’s inner heart. T’was a Sea Starry Night brought a new dimension to the old slideshow, with underwater images projected onto the South Gorge wall. Musical duo Colin Offord and Yeh Yelan performed Transience, a 45minute, light and sound installation featuring a seashell trumpet and a feather flute. Lines in the Sand festival organisers were supported by many individuals, Island businesses and organisations, and received major sponsorship from Sea Stradbroke and the Port of Brisbane, the Redland City Council, which provided a Community Grants Program, and the Regional Arts Development Fund.
