When you start out playing golf there are lots of terms and rules that you will need to learn. Scoring and keeping a score card is an integral part of the game and if done incorrectly could mean that you are disqualified from the competition. So what do 'Out and 'In' mean when they appear on the scorecard? Each golf club will have its own scorecard which usually also has a map of the course you are playing. When you look inside you will find the card divided into two one for 'Out' and one for 'In' This means you are keeping score for the front nine holes (out) and then the back nine holes (in). So where do we get these terms from? History shows us that they date back to the beginning of golf. The first courses in Scotland were built in fairly rugged conditions with lots of inclement weather and mist! The courses were built as they were found Golfers would almost create there own courses by starting their games along the links and alongside the Scottish coast. Well trod paths were formed and patterns of play emerged so eventually and well used golf course would be formed. These early courses all took the same form. The starting point was always the same and would eventually be where the clubhouse would be placed. The Golfers would start there game which would continue hole from to hole in a straight line once they had reached halfway point they turned around and would play another nine holes heading back towards the clubhouse or starting point. So through time the outward nine holes and the inward nine holes have been the pattern for of our golf courses with 18 holes being the standard now set by traditional courses yet you still have the division between the first half and second half of the course. Design of golf courses is now much different and planned strategically to give a challenging and enjoyable game but the tradition of 'in' and 'out' still remains for the first 9 and second nine holes.
