OUR MISSION
We create great American theater by developing and producing new works and world masterpieces that most richly direct our gaze to the life of the human spirit. We cultivate an audience that cherishes the intimate joy of theater, enriched when shared by a community of others.
VISION
TO BE A THEATER WHOSE WORK CONTRIBUTES TO THE CANON OF WORLD THEATER AND IS A VITAL CULTURAL RESOURCE FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
Land Acknowledgement
THE LAND UPON WHICH WE GATHER IS PART OF THE TRADITIONAL TERRITORY OF THE LENNI-LENAPE, CALLED “LENAPEHOKING.”
Two River Theater wishes to acknowledge the LenniLenape as the original people of this unceded land where we proudly present our work and strive to be a vital cultural resource for our community.
CORE VALUES
Artistic Excellence
We nurture and challenge the visions of adventurous theater artists. Our commitment to the artistic process is sustained over time through an investment in people, their creative process and our dedication to the highest artistic standards.
Education and Community Engagement
We make our theater a welcoming resource for all. We create engagement programs and partnerships that encourage all voices to come together in conversation around the stories we tell. We invest in the next generation of artists and audiences by introducing students and lifelong learners to the possibility and adventure that theater brings to our lives.
Operational Excellence
We dedicate ourselves to the highest standards in our governance, management, operational and financial practices. We are committed to developing and retaining an experienced and accomplished staff, an engaged and informed Board of Trustees and a working environment that attracts staff, volunteers and artists of the highest caliber.
COMMITMENT TO INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND ACCESS (IDEA)
We believe the essence of theater is democratic: it invites us to encounter, consider and perhaps adopt other points of view, if only for a brief time in a darkened theater.
We aspire to build an environment in which artists, audiences, employees and Board members from different backgrounds and experiences together form an institution that is equitable, diverse and inclusive.

June 2024
It is our distinct pleasure to report to you on Two River Theater’s 2022/23 season – a year of reemergence, institutional change and new adventures in theatrical wonderment.
We welcomed you back to the theater in October 2022 with Alice Childress’ Wine in the Wilderness featuring Crystal A. Dickinson and directed by Brandon J. Dirden, a fitting homecoming for everyone to Two River. This was the final season programmed by John Dias, Two River’s Artistic Director for eleven years, alongside former Managing Director, Michael Hurst. We thank them both for their decade-plus of service to this wonderful institution.
Sharing live theater continued throughout the season with Crossing Borders, performances of Living & Breathing, Romeo and Juliet and Two Sisters and a Piano, alongside the return of our education and community programming. We invite you to read on and learn more about what we accomplished together throughout our joyous return to Two River following the COVID-19 pandemic.
We joined the Two River community during the 2022/23 season and you all warmly welcomed us in our new roles. We were honored to continue the artistic legacy and values that makes Two River Theater an indispensable community resource. As we close out our 2023/24 30th Anniversary Season, optimism is high, the future is bright and we cannot wait to continue sharing the thrill of live theater with you for years to come.
With gratitude,
Justin Waldman

FINANCIAL RESULTS
FISCAL YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2023
As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, Two River Theater is dedicated to creating great American theater. This fiscal year marked the conclusion of our pandemic government relief fund support, resulting in a decrease in earned income compared to the previous year. The year also presented a transformed operational landscape for theater in the post-pandemic era. Despite these challenges, our commitment to excellence in theater was bolstered by the generous support of individual donors, businesses and foundations, resulting in a 10% increase in contributed income over the last year. Looking ahead, we are steadfast in our dedication to maximizing every contribution while upholding fiscal responsibility. This approach will enable us to drive positive change, uphold our mission and ensure that Two River Theater remains a vital cultural institution.
ARTISTIC ACHIEVEMENTS
August 2022: The 11th Annual Crossing Borders (Cruzando Fronteras) Festival returned in-person after two years, with José Zayas curating for the third time. The festival featured plays by Bernardo Cubría, Rosa Fernandez, Marisela Treviño Orta and Two River Theater commissioned playwright, Matt Barbot. The festival kicked off with a community event at Red Bank’s Johnny Jazz Park, and featured local musician Gil Cruz and informational tables staffed by a dozen community partners, including Lunch Break, Parker Family Health and JBJ Soul Kitchen. One of the highlights of the festival was an outdoor concert on our pergola stage by Alea. This year marked the beginning of the festival’s collaboration with community partners, Project Write Now and coLab Arts. All events at the festival were completely free to the public. Over 1,000 people attended.
November 2022: Justin Waldman began his tenure as the new Artistic Director. Throughout his 20+ year career as a producer and director, Justin has brought over 250 productions to life. The third, and final, of these plays, Nilo Cruz’ Kisses Through the Glass, premiered in December of 2022 in both English and Spanish
February 2023: Nora DeVeau-Rosen began her tenure as the new Managing Director of Two River Theater. A theatrical administrator and producer (theater and digital), DeVeau-Rosen brings with her over a decade of leadership experience in development, fundraising and general management, along with a deep passion for supporting new voices and new stories.

Two River engaged former UFC #1 ranked fighter, Sijara “SarJ” Eubanks to share her expertise on the unique culture of mixed martial arts.
April 2023: In association with Lively McCabe Entertainment, Two River produced a workshop of a new musical comedy, Always Something There with a book by Sandy Rustin (Clue, Mystic Pizza). ARTS EDUCATION, PRACTICE AND EXPOSURE
The Two River Theater Education programs strive to create new access points and foster long-term connection to the arts through a number of community partnerships and opportunities. Through student matinees and programs like The ART of Social Justice (a partnership between Project Write Now, the T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, and Two River), our Education initiatives served more than 3,000 patrons in the New Jersey area
A LITTLE SHAKESPEARE: ROMEO AND JULIET
Adapted and Directed by Diana M. Fathi
Our 2022/23 season included A Little Shakespeare with A Little Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet. Over the course of the program, 16 high school students collaborated with a team of theater professionals to create this fully-fledged production of one of Shakespeare’s greatest works. In addition to our live performances of A Little Shakespeare, our 2020/21 virtual production of Tiny Shakes: Romeo and Juliet remained available online to more than 125 students and teachers at no cost.
TWO RIVER THEATER SUMMER INTENSIVES
This invigorating summer program, geared towards students in grades 7 to 12, offered opportunities for exploration of the arts both onstage and off. Though the program is tuition based, Two River offers numerous scholarships to partially or fully cover the cost. This year’s camps featured a partnership with Inspire Life Camp in Asbury Park, NJ, which focuses on youth
empowerment, education, and character building through art and science for the Central Jersey area. As a result of this collaboration, five students were able to attend Summer Intensives on scholarships, expanding our total number of Intensive students to 35.
HOWARD ARONSON METRO SCHOLARS
STUDENT MATINEES
Education programming also includes matinee performances that are closed to the public and instead specifically programmed to accommodate school schedules. The student matinee experience includes curriculum guides, pre-show workshops and postshow discussions with the cast Our Have a SEAT (Student/ Engagement/Access/Theater) program accounted for 40% of our Student Matinee attendance, amounting to the inclusion of 838 students across 12 local underserved schools.
A year-long program, the Howard Aronson Metro Scholars program allows high school juniors from across the state of New Jersey a unique opportunity to explore the operations of professional theater through specialized workshops and classes. This year’s cohort consisted of nine students from six different high schools Participation in the program is completely free to students. Since 2005, the Howard Aronson Metro Scholars program has served 210 students, immersing them in the artistic and administrative processes at Two River.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
We strive for community connections and partnerships to make sure our work goes far beyond the stage. In the 2022/23 season, Two River Theater continued its commitment to expansive community engagement through a variety of free, new and returning programs such as In the Know, Pride on the Plaza and the continuation of the Inside Two River events series. Partnerships with local businesses included the Wine in the Wilderness Paint and Sip with Above Arts Studio, a Cuban Dance Night with Fred Astaire Dance Studios and our Holiday Community Celebration
Through partnerships with the Red Bank Public Library and T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center, Two River has developed numerous programs to help inspire discussion on complex issues throughout each season. Our Teacher’s Development Program, ART of Social Justice series, and Multicultural Book Club (in partnership with Red Bank Public Library) help make the work of BIPOC artists a vital classroom and community tool. These partners also help our visiting artists by acting as cultural epicenters during their stay.
IN THE KNOW
The world premiere of Mando Alvarado’s Living & Breathing was accompanied by the launch of the In the Know conversation series with Artistic Director Justin Waldman. This free, intimate dialogue interviewed playwrights and directors across the remainder of the 2022/23 season. With returning favorites Rebecca Martinez and Nilo Cruz, as well as
new Two River collaborators Dustin Wills and Hansol Jung, the interviews offered the public an inside look at the creative process through a conversational lens
ELEVATING
LGBTQIA+ VOICES
The 2022/23 season continued Two River’s commitment to elevating and celebrating LGBTQIA+ voices through panels and performances like the East Meets Fierce drag show and Pride on the Plaza celebration. To celebrate the Transgender Day of Visibility, the theater held a networking brunch and panel featuring the perspectives of trans theater artists from across the industry from performance to production: Donnie Cianciotto, ien DeNio, Em Hausmann, JJ Maley, Samekh Resh and Sawaan Tiwari.
Our Pride on the Plaza drag show returned, featuring the talents of Lady Celestina, Octavia Anyae and Roxie Chanel.
