Welcome to Texas Performing Arts!

Thank you for joining us! We’re thrilled you’re here to experience our 24/25 Texas Performing Arts Season. We hope that the artists inspire you through their work.

We are proud to showcase live performances from both iconic artists and emerging talents. This season we’ve put together for you a globehopping lineup of 14 events that push the boundaries of traditional performing arts, offering innovative experiences from creators who are boldly redefining their fields.

We’re also excited to bring you performances in collaboration with other great Austin arts organizations, including Conspirare, Fusebox, ATX Chamber Music & Jazz, and more. As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering new works, we’re proud to introduce our next artist-in-residence project, Postcards from the Border, by Austin songwriter Carrie Rodriguez, novelist Oscar Cásares, and photographer Joel Salcido. Discover the full season lineup and see all that we have to offer at texasperformingarts.org.

The 24/25 TPA season complements the always-popular Broadway in Austin series—this year is our biggest yet with ten shows direct from Broadway—and our Texas Welcomes series of concerts, comedy, and family entertainment. We hope you can join us often to share in the magic of great performances.

Let’s start the show!

Beyond the Performance

At Texas Performing Arts, we believe in the unique power of live performance to uplift, connect, and create community and we ensure that our engagement with the arts reaches far beyond the stage. Annually, thousands of students and Central Texas residents participate in TPA’s educational and outreach programs, including pre- and post-show discussions, workshops, masterclasses, and youth performances. By offering an array of transformative experiences, we aim to inspire people of all ages and enhance the role of the performing arts in Austin.

Jazz students from Huston-Tillotson University were invited to participate in the soundcheck with Grammyaward winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy before her Bass Concert Hall debut.

More than 1,600 area students visited Bass Concert Hall for a special school day performance with the celebrated company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Community members gathered together to learn movements from Alvin Ailey’s iconic and timeless dance work Revelations, led by former Ailey company member Nasha Thomas.

Students from Elgin High School enjoyed a special performance of the smash hit Wicked as part of TPA’s Broadway Experience for Youth program.

TPA’s new 24/25 season is in full swing featuring pioneering performances across multiple genres and a number of ways to interact with and learn from our visiting artists. Here are just a few highlights of our education and engagement activities from this past season. 1 2 3 4 5

TPA Expands School Day Performances to Include First-ever Broadway Show

At TPA, support from donors like you is instrumental in providing programs that expand access to the performing arts for students of all ages. Your support covers bus transportation and free tickets to educational performances with renowned artists. These daytime performances have ignited inspiration and imagination in hundreds of thousands of students across Central Texas.

TPA transforms lives through the power of creativity, education, and the performing arts. We are committed to ensuring that every student has the opportunity to experience world-class live performances. But we can’t do it without donors like you!

This season, TPA is expanding to reach more than 12,000 K–12 students. For the first time, 3,000

local students will be able to attend a free, daytime performance of the acclaimed Broadway musical Peter Pan. In addition, every 5th grader in Austin Independent School District will attend a special daytime performance of El Otro Oz, a bilingual, Mexican folkinfused musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz. Along with these two presentations, TPA will offer school day performances with Kid Koala, Sweet Honey In The Rock, and Versa-Style Street Dance Company for a total of five this year.

Programs like these can’t exist without the generous support of our members and donors like you. Want to learn more about how you can expand live arts access for students in Central Texas? Contact support@texasperformingarts.org or call 512.471.1195.

BAND LEADER OSCAR HERNÁNDEZ

Oscar Hernández has long been considered one of the most prominent pianists and arrangers in the Salsa and Latin Jazz scene. He is all about tradition. Born into a large Puerto Rican family living in the Bronx, it was the nearby Spanish Harlem neighborhood that shaped his cultural musical sensibilities. The soundtrack to this bustling enclave in the 1960s, emanating from any given window on any given day, was a mix of Latin Jazz and American pop radio.

Hernandez started playing the trumpet at age twelve; he switched to piano shortly thereafter. By the time he finished his teen years, he was making a living as a professional musician and gigging with some of the most talented Latin Jazz artists of the ‘70s. He spent much of the ‘80s producing, arranging and playing piano for Panamanian vocalist Rubén Blades while simultaneously leading his own band, Seis del Solar. In the 90’s Hernandez produced a recording titled Dance City which received a rave review in the New York Times and led Paul Simon to call him as arranger/producer and musical director for

his Broadway show The Capeman. Oscar also received acclaim as music arranger on Gloria Estefan’s hit 2015 Broadway musical On Your Feet.

ABOUT SPANISH HARLEM ORCHESTRA

Spanish Harlem Orchestra, the three-time Grammy®winning Salsa and Latin Jazz band, sets the gold standard for excellence in authentic, New York style, hard core salsa.

Whether in a concert hall or at an outdoor jazz festival, there is no easing you in, they come at you full force, from start to finish. Their energy on stage and their rich sound and musical precision leave audiences mesmerized until the last note is played. With an unwavering respect for the music’s storied history, the ensemble’s thirteen worldclass musicians and vocalists come together to create an unparalleled musical experience.

Now celebrating 25 years of excellence, SHO, as they are known to fans, is dedicated to the sounds of the barrio (Spanish Harlem, New York City). Their music is characterized by the raw, organic and vintage sound

defined by the genre. They are on a mission to keep the musical legacy of salsa dura (hard salsa) alive and expand its audience to those who love great music, not just Latin music. Grounded in the past, while focused on the future, they strive to keep the music relevant, creating a unique and fresh approach.

With nine CD’s and six Grammy nominations, this powerhouse orchestra is aware that it is crucial to continually push themselves and raise the bar. Their new 2024 release, Swing Forever, solidifies Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s wellearned reputation as the true sound of the barrio, and “the leading light of the salsa reconstruction movement” (Newsday). Featuring six-time Grammy®-winner Puerto Rican sonero, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Swing Forever continues to write Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s legacy in the annals of the music’s history.

The band has performed on prestigious stages around the world, including the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, and the Newport Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, and the renowned Monterey Jazz Festival. Their 2018 release Anniversary won the 2019 Grammy® Award

for Best Tropical Album. As recently as 2022, the band was once again nominated for the 65th Annual Grammy Awards for their seminal release, Imágenes Latinas.

Helping Texans is at the heart of H-E-B.

Over 115 years ago, we opened our doors to help make the lives of hard-working Texans better. We were a family business back then. We remain a family business today with a passion for - and a helping hand in - every community we serve. From fighting hunger and providing disaster relief to honoring Texas educators and our Nation’s military, we’re firm believers in Texans helping Texans. We do this for one simple reason. We are from here, so we are helping here.
