About Us The Leadership Institute of Texas State University Texas State University is deeply committed to providing the best education, development and training for its students. The Leadership Institute provides students an opportunity to develop leadership qualities they can apply throughout their lives. Our central focus is to establish a diverse organizational structure where students participate in numerous community and extracurricular activities while building relationships and developing leadership skills through a variety of interactive, energizing and unique experiences. The core values of the Institute are Ethics/Integrity, Excellence, Social Responsibility, Inclusivity, Civic Engagement and Empowerment. Some of the goals include: • Serving as a clearinghouse of information regarding leadership opportunities at Texas State.

• Providing a variety of leadership development opportunities within a tiered structure for incoming students, established sophomore/junior leaders and a capstone program for highly experienced junior/senior leaders.

• Collaborating with departments within and outside the Division of Student Affairs to deliver experiential learning opportunities.

Dean of Students Office The Dean of Students Office strives to set standards of excellence in the delivery of student services and to foster a welcoming environment that is inclusive, safe and conducive to learning. The core function of the Dean of Students Office is assisting and developing students through services that include emergency services, leadership development opportunities, legal advice, notary services, ombuds services, and resolutions to student misconduct allegations.

Dear Students, On behalf of The Leadership Institute of Texas State University and the Conference Planning Committee, we would like to welcome you to the 2014 Leadership Institute Annual Conference. This year’s conference will involve more than 300 students from diverse backgrounds and majors at Texas State and other central Texas colleges and universities. We hope that it will serve as a keystone of your leadership experience and training.

The primary purpose of the Leadership Institute Annual Conference is to bring students together from various backgrounds to learn leadership skills, engage students in values-based activities that foster personal leadership development, build a unified community, cultivate social responsibility and inspire students to adopt a new way of life while expanding their leadership abilities.

We worked hard to integrate the Leadership Institute’s core values of Excellence, Ethics & Integrity, Empowerment, Inclusivity, Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility into this year’s conference theme, “Leadership and Learning: Celebrating the Journey.” As conference participants, we hope that you will discover your leadership potential, connect with other leaders, faculty and alumni to learn valuable skills that will impact not just your own lives, but the communities in which you live. Speakers Julian Castro Mayor, City of San Antonio, Texas FRIDAY, 6:15-7:00PM, LBJ STUDENT CENTER BALLROOM, 3-16.1 A 39-year-old San Antonio native, Mayor Julián Castro is the youngest mayor of a Top 50 American city. First elected on May 9, 2009, Mayor Castro was handily re-elected to a third term in 2013.

Throughout his tenure, Mayor Castro has focused on attracting well-paying jobs in 21st century industries, positioning San Antonio to be a leader in the New Energy Economy and raising educational attainment across the spectrum.

Mayor Castro created SA2020, a community-wide visioning effort turned nonprofit that has galvanized thousands of San Antonians around a simple, but powerful vision for San Antonio - to create a brainpower community that is the liveliest city in the nation.

Under his leadership, the city established Café College, a one-stop center offering high-quality guidance on college admissions, financial aid and standardized test preparation to any student in the San Antonio area. Since opening in 2010, Café College has served more than 25,000 area students.

During his tenure, San Antonio ranked No. 1 on the Milken Institute’s Best-Performing Cities list, graded A+ for doing business by Forbes and ranked as the nation’s No. 3 new tech hotspot by Forbes.

In November 2012, Mayor Castro led a voter-approved public referendum that will expand high-quality Pre-K services to more than 22,000 San Antonio four-year-olds over the next eight years.

Mayor Castro also has brought a sense of urgency to revitalizing the city’s urban core, including the underserved East Side of San Antonio, by initiating the “Decade of Downtown” and approving a series of incentives to encourage inner city investment. These efforts have spurred plans for the construction of more than 2,400 housing units in the center city by 2014.

In March 2010, Mayor Castro joined executives from Google and Twitter in being named to the World Economic Forum’s list of Young Global Leaders. Later that year, Time magazine placed him on its “40 under 40” list of rising stars in American politics. Mayor Castro also is a member of the Inter-American Dialogue, an Aspen InstituteRodel Fellow and serves on the board of the LBJ Foundation.

Mayor Castro earned his undergraduate degree from Stanford University with honors and distinction in 1996 and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School in 2000. In 2001, at the age of 26, Castro became the youngest elected city councilman at that time in San Antonio history.

He is married to Erica Lira Castro, an elementary school teacher, and they are the proud parents of Carina, born in 2009.

Donald G. McPherson Activist, Educator, Feminist, Entrepreneur College Football Hall of Famer SATURDAY, 9:15-10:15AM, LBJ STUDENT CENTER BALLROOM, 3-16.1 For more than 27 years, Don McPherson has used the power and appeal of sport to address complex social justice issues. He has created innovative programs, supported community service providers and has provided educational seminars and lectures throughout North America.

As an athlete, McPherson was a unanimous All-America quarterback at Syracuse University and is a veteran of the NFL and Canadian Football League. As captain of the undefeated 1987 Syracuse football team, McPherson set 22 school records, led the nation in passing and won more than 18 national “player of the year” awards, including the Maxwell Award as the nation’s best player, the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the inaugural Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award. He was second in the Heisman Trophy voting. In 2008 McPherson was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2013 Syracuse University retired his #9 jersey. Only the fourth number (and one of five) to be retired in the history of the University’s storied football program.

Since 1986 McPherson has delivered school and community based programs addressing issues such as drunk driving, alcohol and substance abuse, bullying, youth leadership and mentoring. Upon retiring from pro football in 1994, he joined Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society as national director of Athletes in Service to America. In 2002 he founded the Sports Leadership Institute at Adelphi University, for which he served as executive director until 2007.

In 1995 McPherson turned his focus to the issue of “men’s violence against women,” as director of Sport in Society’s Mentors in Violence Prevention Program, taking over for the program’s founder, Jackson Katz. McPherson emerged as a national leader and advocate for the prevention of sexual and domestic violence. He has conducted workshops and lectures for more than 250 college campuses, community organizations and national sports and violence prevention organizations. His programs and lectures have reached more than 1 million people.

Don has twice testified before the United States Congress and has worked closely with the U.S. Departments of Education and Defense on issues of sexual violence in education and the military, respectively. He has provided commentary on numerous national news programs and was featured in O Magazine and appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Don also created and hosted “Training for Life” on MSG Varsity, a life skills TV show that examined a myriad of social issues and sports. In 2012, Training for Life’s episode on “Sports Parenting” was nominated for an Emmy Award.

Don McPherson has served as a board member, consultant and advisor for several national organizations including the Ms Foundation for Women and the National Football Foundation and the US National Committee for UN Women. He currently serves on the board of the Arc of Onondaga Foundation. McPherson recently joined the Advisory Board of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities, at Stony Brook University.

She’s authored two books, “I Heart Recruitment: The Eight Steps to Limitless Possibility for Sororities” and “Social Excellence: We Dare You”. Jessica has an Art degree from Eastern Illinois University and a Masters in Higher Education from Indiana University-Bloomington. Jessica is a proud sorority woman, volunteers her time with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and loves to run, drink lots of coffee, and cuddle with her dogs - Maximus and Brutus.

Using various activities, we can look at how we come to certain ideas about the world around us and talk about ways we can consider things we haven’t before. There are infinite approaches to addressing this topic and this presentation utilizes a few of those approaches.
